So the Hannibrainworms have led me down the rabbithole of reading about the origin of the concept of “psychic driving”, and jesus h. christ on a triscuit… comparing Frederick Chiton to the person who developed the methods Chilton practices (Donald Ewen Cameron) is like comparing Succession’s real-eldest-boy vanity presidential candidate Connor Roy to habitual wildlife corpse-disrespecter RFK Jr.
Like. You watch the show, and you think:
“Wow, this feels slightly overdone; no one is this obviously slimy and unethical [Chilton] / naïvely entitled and obviously unqualified [Connor Roy].”
…and then the somehow-even-more-intense reality hits you like a whale carcass sliding off the roof of a speeding minivan.
Like. Look at this shit:
(…or maybe don’t - cw for fascism and severe ableism)
Cameron started to distinguish populations between "the weak" and "the strong". Those with anxieties or insecurities and who had trouble with the state of the world were labelled as "the weak"; in Cameron's analysis, they could not cope with life and had to be isolated from society by "the strong". The mentally ill were thus labelled as not only sick, but also weak. Cameron further argued that "the weak" must not influence children. He promoted a philosophy where chaos could be prevented by removing the weak from society.

I thought the most sinister thing about Montreal was the omnipresent sketchy-ass concrete infrastructure, or the mafia, or the bikers, or maybe that guy who forever attached an unwelcome asterisk to the New Order song “True Faith”.
But no. It’s this fucking guy. Donald Ewen Cameron.
…who, btw, was invited to work at McGill by Dr. Burnt Toast himself, Walter Wilder Penfield.

In January 2015, the Vancouver Art Gallery received a donation of ten oil sketches claimed to be long-lost works by the Canadian cultural icon J.E.H. MacDonald. Perhaps lacking due diligence, the gallery's curator determined the sketches were genuine, and announced plans for an exhibit to showcase them. Almost immediately, skepticism arose over their authenticity.
The family that donated the sketches claimed they were bought from MacDonald's son in 1974 for CAD 35 each, after they'd been buried for thirty years. They were then stored in a basement for another forty. That such sketches were kept in unideal environments for over seventy years and yet remained in pristine condition was a dubious idea, along with that price tag of CAD 35 in 1974 – when artists such as MacDonald were already revered subjects of museums such as the McMichael Canadian Art Collection (opened in 1966). Other obvious red flags were misspelled signatures on the back of some of the sketches, and the indisputable resemblance of an item claimed to have been MacDonald's sketch for Batchewana Rapids, Algoma to Tom Thompson's The Rapids:
More granular discrepancies were uncovered in investigations by former National Gallery curator Charles Hill, and the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI). Journalist Marsha Lederman outlines what those investigations found in an episode of The Decibel that I'd recommend listening to. Among other things, Hill's investigation noted a number of artistic and historical inconsistencies – the most notable being how much the claimed sketch of The Elements resembles the final painting, despite it being well-known that MacDonald produced The Elements by referencing two incomplete paintings of his. The CCI investigation found the material and techniques used in the sketches, such as underdrawing, were atypical of MacDonald's known art process, and that the very pigments used on the claimed sketch of The Tangled Garden were not available during MacDonald's lifetime.
The Vancouver Art Gallery eventually admitted their embarrassing mistake nine years after this saga began. To save face, they repurposed their planned exhibit of the sketches as J.E.H. MacDonald? A Tangled Garden, using the sketches to tell the story of how the authenticity of the paintings was unravelled. The exhibit will run until 12 May.

Random note on how bad Canada's racism is: but there's these cool short mini documentaries called "Canadian Heritage Minute" that first came in the form of commercials to talk about prominent figures and moments of Canadian history (check em out on youtube, they're really cool) but now there's also tiktoks of them run by the historicaCanada tiktok.
But the thing about them regarding racism is that Canadian racism is so bad that all the comments are turned off of Canadian heritage minute vids that feature nonwhite people (First Nations, Black Canadians, Asian Canadians, etc) and a few featuring White women, but all the ones featuring White men are turned on.

Introduction is long and whole mansion is based on one from Tonb Raider series (Legend/Underworld). English isn't my first language so sorry for all mistakes.
Dedication for the @aris-ink meance (angel) which supporter me all the way along and mostly I'm posting because she gave me a wings 💖
MINORS DNI
In modern office was sitting very old and elegant lady. She had old-fashioned dress and her white hair were in tight bun. Fine jewllery was on her neck, same was for wrist and ears. The stones were shinging in light of the lamp. She sat opposite young notary, which was writing somethine with pen on his documents. Dame was visibly getting impatient, her assistant was making meaningful glances at worker, but he didn't even noticed. After few minutes she sighed and tapped her emaciated on light brown desk.
"I am sorry ma'am, it has to be perfect."
She rolled her eyes and looked around. Office was big and bright, outside was raining heavy, wall of water and sometimes the sky was pierced by thunder. There was computer on the other side of the desk and big bookshelf filled by documents and books about the law. On the wall was hanging put some awards and certificates which notary finished successfuly.
"My boy, I am sorry to interrupting you, but in fact I don't have much time. I am going to die very soon and I need to do a lot." Old lady said bitterly.
"I am sorry ma'am." He gave her sympathetic smile and put down pen. "I have ended your last will as you wished."
Notary handed her document. She read it with little frown. It was strange for her, but the time has come and she had to take care of last things in this world.
"I have concated the curator of museum you have mentioned. He is thrilled by your proposition and agreed to all your terms."
"I am glad then. I hope this will do good for next generations." Old lady smiled warmly.
"But there is one problem. Being specific about the mansion in Grand Hillsam." Man said looking at the name of the town.
Immediately old lady's glance became cold and suspicious. "What about it?"
"I have found that in fact it's part of Canadian heritage and it was just under your custody ma'am. It can't be given to any museum or anyone unless the government agree or the owner can't take care of it. I have tried to contact the office in Grand Hillsam and they have sent me to someone higher."
Old lady scoffed and waved her head with annoying expression. She tapped desk again, looked like wanting to light a cigarette.
"But they have stated that, after your death it will become clear what will happen to the mansion. It can't be made into museum if it's not proven that mansion would be left all alone."
"But I wanted to avoid passing it to anyone. That's why I wanted to make museum there and give all historical stuff away as gifts."
"They are very thankful, but your family last will is above that. You were not living there in fact, only someone who lives there can decide about mansion." Young man sighed taking out some documents. "I have searched it very carefuly, but can't do anything about that."
"That's bullshit." She cursed not like a lady. "I have paying all the bills and sending money to take some care of this mansion. I just didn't want to live there." She frowned.
"And as your family stated, only person who lives there can decided to such things as selling or giving up the mansion. After your death your family and far family will be informed about it. If they won't be able to take care of it, it will be made into museum." Notary said shrugging with helplessness.
"But I have no family. That's why I am giving away the money and things."
"Well... that's not true ma'am... the office searched through documents as did I. You have a very distant family, here in Europe."
"But they have been thrown out of my lineage almost three hundred years ago. The testement didn't include them in any case."
"Well... the office in Canada have stated that unless your famil won't care about mansion or simply can't because of money, then yes it will be made into museum."
Old lady sighed slowly, but then nodded. "If it's all, please let me sign it and let's end this farse."
Soon notary handed her all necessary documents. She signed them with diligence. They have left office and her assistant helped her by softly holding arm. He was middle age man, who served her long time. When they were in the car, driver almost immediately pulled into driveway.
"Damnit, it was so close to get rid of this stupid mansion and it's secrets. I am sure they have had their word in this." She said staring at the window and terrible weather.
"So what now? Your distant family will be called to Grand Hillsam that's for sure." Assistant said with worrying tone.
"I will make sure, that they won't want to stay there and will be protected. I need to be at home as fast as possible."
}*{
It was dark outside and was raining almost all time. Week has passed since old lady was in the office. Now she was lying at bed, weak and in fact annoyed. She lighted a cigarette and took a deep breath. Her assistant just left bedroom. It was quite big one, with canopy bed, balcony, big wardrobe and high bookshelf.
"You shouldn't be smoking." Happy voice said with concern.
"I am dying, I can do whatever I want." Old lady's words were horase. "I don't care how I am going to die, I am going to enjoy life till my last breath."
"You are still the same." Green eyes flashed in dim room, just on the bookshelf.
Small, dark as night cat hopped on the floor and made it's way to the bed.
"Thank's God, I was thinking that Harry was making you suspicious." Old lady said bitterly.
"It was hard to make my way here and this form." Cat said and stopped near the bed, that lady could see him.
"I need your owner'a help." She confessed.
"We know. That is why I am here, but don't know the details."
"I wanted to give up the mansion. To get rid of it, make family free. But of course they have stepped in." Old lady frowned with disgust.
"Well it was sure, that it won't be so easy."
"Officials said that until my last family won't be proven that don't want to take care of the mansion or simply can't take care, because of money, there is no way of making of it museum."
"So they even messed with office." Cat said perking it's ears.
"Yes. There is a threat, that all will start again. I have no time to meet my distant family and tell them about our messed up past. Pretty sure that they won't believe me anyway. So you will have to take care of that. They can't stay there and they have to give up this stupid building."
"Well it's not like when the building is gone, all the problems will disappear. The bond will be still there."
"Yes, but the ritual place will be no more, all the knowledge and items will be gone. Some spells will break. Even town might get free from dark influence. It will be hard for them go rebuild that somewhere else.
"I will go and tell my owner about everything." Cat promised and licked it paw. "But now let me keep your company."
Animal jumped on the bed and sit on old lady's lap demanding headpats. She gladly provided them till her hand stopped and last breath left her mouth. Cat purred softly making sure that her soul is safe.
}*{
Namjoon stepped out of the car and looked at building in front of him. He put his hands in the pockets. The gate was closed and strong walls were protecting land inside. It looked old and untreated. Through a gate you could see entrance to the garden and main entrance to the big manor. It was already late, moon poking from behind a clouds made a little light. He walked to the gate and put a hand in shadow place then
walk
through
the
darkness till he reached other side. He did the same with big doors and found himself inside. There was dust, unplesant smell and silence, but he remembered those halls too good. There was big, main space and staircase which were splitting up, leading up and to the left and right where were rooms. Entrance to the basement was also through this room, same as kitchen and second part of the manor. He wasn't alone.
Shadows shifted slighty and into his view came six characters. Wide smile appeard on his handsome face.
"Is thar true hyung? That's why we all are here?"Jimin asked coming closer.
"Better be that or I will throw hands." said Yoongi and leaned on pillar in opposite.
"Our man has confirmed that there is another descendant. They have rejected idea of the museum for now and have stated that it must to be prooven that descendant can't take care of mansion to make it museum." Namjoon has spoken quietly.
"So we have chance to take it all back?" Jungkook's wide and bunny smile appeard.
"Maybe, now they have to brought here this person."
"All right let's go back to the work guys." Jin stated and they all have disappeard in the blink of the eye.

Jimmy Carter turned 100 yesterday. He is proof that decency and goodness can exist in public service.
Did you know that young Jimmy Carter heroically saved Canada from a nuclear meltdown when he was a naval officer?
It's true!
The world’s first nuclear reactor meltdown occurred in the Ottawa Valley — and a young U.S. naval officer (future U.S. president Jimmy Carter) was brought in and put in charge of the team containing the disaster — over 70 years ago.
Leading a team of two dozen men, 28-year old Lieutenant Carter had himself lowered into the damaged reactor. That week, Carter and his team courageously exposed themselves to a thousand times the level of radiation considered safe by today’s standards.
When the Canadian government turned to U.S. nuclear experts for help, Lieutenant Carter was put in charge of the urgent operation. Carter was one of the few in the world at that time with any expertise in this new technology.
First, the reactor had to be shut down, and then disassembled and replaced.
An exact replica of the reactor was built on a nearby tennis court where Carter and his men practiced each move and tracked their work as they progressed. Every pipe, bolt and nut was rebuilt exactly to replicate the damaged reactor.
Carter divided himself and his men into teams of three. Each team worked 90-second shifts, rushing in and cleaning and repairing the reactor, precisely as they had practiced on the tennis court.
A minute and a half was deemed the longest the human body could handle the amount of radiation that remained in the area — even with protective gear.
It was still way too much radiation. Carter and his men absorbed a year’s worth of radiation in each of those 90-second shifts. Carter’s urine was still testing as radioactive six months later and the future president’s health was affected for the rest of his life.

felt a bit bad that i couldn't finish the alice munro anthology that i started because of how often i found myself thinking "canadian pastiche is so deeply boring". the nostalgia-soaked ennui of mid 20th century rural canadian society doesn't like, carry the same sense of weight or intrigue as americana. characters will reference time periods, historical events and other minutia, landmarks, era-typical social codes and work lifestyles, heritage/immigration experience all in an attempt to evoke a sense of cultivated cultural identity, but its just not interesting (which is a shame because i think her characters on their own are interesting). when a character rattles off a bunch of landmarks it feels like that one scene in twin peaks s3 where michael cera rambles for like 4 minutes but played straight. IDK maybe I'll try reading lives of girls and women and come away feeling differently.

Happy 28th birthday to this iconic moment in Canadian history!!
On February 15th, 1996, former Canadian prime minister, Jean Chrétien created this could-be meme format by putting a protester in a chokehold. The photo of the event became known by many Canadians as the Shawinigan Handshake; a joke about the prime minister’s home town.
Now, this dude bred controversy man. Like any politician, you go to the controversy page of his Wikipedia page and all of them have full articles associated with them. This controversy, while having its own Wikipedia page, is barely even a controversy compared to everything else. In fact, the now 90-year-old man allegedly will still take photos reenacting the event. Notable examples being comedian Rick Mercer and current prime minister Justin Trudeau. There’s a Shawinigan microbrewery that has a beer depicting the event on the label. The label uses the likenesses of Chrétien and hockey commentator and fellow controversy-machine: Don Cherry.
So where did this come from? Why did the prime minister of Canada have this protester in a chokehold? Well, this may come as a shock, but Canada has only ever had two political assassinations: D’rcy McGee, 1868 and Pierre LaPorte, 1970. However that has not stopped people from trying.
Three months before the infamous Shawinigan Handshake photo was taken on Flag Day, Jean Chrétien survived an assassination attempt. Much like the president of the US, the PM resides in a publicly known address: 24 Sussex Street in Ottawa. A separatist snuck into the house in the early morning with a knife with the intention to slit Chrétien’s throat. The attack was narrowly missed due to (allegedly) the random chance of Chrétien’s wife Aline being up and spotting him.
So my man is tormented by the traumatic experience of almost getting killed in his sleep both by his own brain and the opposition. Needless to say, he’s a little on edge as he’s at this Flag Day ceremony, even more so when his security detail seemingly breaks up. Then, BAM! A protester is in his face. Having grown up a bit of a scrapper and having assassination on his mind, the PM (around 60 at the time) takes the guy in a chokehold, and the rest is history.
On a quick aside, four years later, Chrétien was pie’d by a protester and, this part seems relatively unclear, but it seems he had a trauma response to it. For whatever reason, the opposition decided this was fair game to bring up in the House of Commons. and one Tory MP was quoted as saying “next time it may not be a pie” which was interesting phrasing. However, this wasn’t new as they felt it was appropriate to make an ableist attack ad in 1993. The ad was regarding the appearance of his mouth, a result of a condition called Bell’s Palsy but that’s another story.
Anyway, thanks for tuning into Heritage Minutes with Goon! A show all about the funny and fact of modern Canadian politics and culture. Tune in next time to learn about the beginnings of Definitely Not The Opera: a tale of a nation hating opera so much that they fucking killed it.
PS Tumblr sucks and isn’t letting me add links so I’ll RB with sources in just a second. Hilariously I’m not embellishing this much at all.

hiiii <3 happy new years!! hope you're doing well and enjoying the holiday season :)
if you're still accepting asks for this prompt, how about 🖊 for nikolai?
Hey @holocene-sims ! Sorry this took so long. I haven't really been on here much since the holidays, but I thought I should probably at least finish some asks while I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing next.
----------
Nikolai Pavlenko
Nikolai is a first-generation Canadian. His parents and grandfather immigrated to Canada a short time before he and his twin sister Natalya (a.k.a. Natascha) were born. Although he's aware of his heritage and culture, he thinks of himself as a Canadian first and has never had much desire to go to his parents' country of origin. The first time he ever travelled to Russia was when he was 13 years old, and it was for an international figure skating competition. All of his subsequent visits there have been connected to skating competitions as well.
Nikolai's family speaks Russian at home, and both he and Natascha are fluent in it along with English and French. Nikolai is quick with languages, and in addition to the three he's fluent in, he's also learned enough Japanese for a basic conversation, and he's picked up a surprising amount of Korean from his student Eden's family as well. (Eden and his siblings are also first-generation Canadians, and they speak Korean with their parents).
If Nikolai were to describe himself in one word, it'd be "unremarkable". That's not to say he's never accomplished anything, but he's always been the sort of person other people easily overlook or forget. Of course, the people closest to him would never see him that way. His family and friends would all describe him as gentle, giving, open-minded and compassionate. They'd also describe him as fun-loving or a troublemaker, depending on who you ask. He's one of those rare people who genuinely wants to love and be loved by everyone and who wants everyone to be happy.
Acquaintances and strangers, on the other hand, are a different story. The thing with Nikolai is that no matter what he does, he never seems to stand out. People tend not to notice him for his looks or talents, nor for what he says or does in general. Currently, he's a figure skating coach, but back when he was a competitor, he won World Championship medals in five consecutive seasons (three silver, two gold), and yet there are people in the figure skating sphere who have to pause a minute to recognize him or associate his name with his accomplishments. He has no idea why this is, and sometimes it bothers him, but at this point he's mostly learned to accept it.
Nikolai feels like he's learned to accept a lot of things he doesn't necessarily like or agree with, simply because he often puts the well-being of others ahead of his own. He often feels hurt or disappointed by his interactions with other people, but he usually tries to let it go, telling himself that he's making someone else's day, and that's what really matters. He doesn't know if he believes this all the time, but it's how he's learned to cope.
It's sometimes difficult for him to admit, but he's happiest in relationships where someone else can take on the role of caretaker for him sometimes instead of constantly relying on him to be the strong one. He has this sort of relationship with his mentor and former coach, Beth-Anne. He also has it with his best friend Ginger and with his partner Mishka, although viewed from the outside it might seem that Nikolai is Mishka's caretaker and protector most of the time.
More than anyone, Mishka is aware of Nikolai's tendency to sacrifice his own happiness and comfort for the happiness and comfort of others. He's exceptionally good at reminding Nikolai to take care of himself without making him feel guilty or weak. For all his own weaknesses, Mishka has strength in all the areas Nikolai needs it. He's learned the importance of having boundaries and the skill of tactfully saying no, and he understands that self-care and self-love aren't selfish. He also knows that worrying doesn't change anything and that it's okay to let go. These are all things he's trying to teach Nikolai, who is slowly but surely learning them too.
Nikolai is convinced Mishka is the only person he's ever been truly in love with. There was obviously a point at which he thought he was in love with his ex-wife Anya, but now that they're divorced and some time has passed and he's gotten perspective, he realizes it was more like he was in love with the idea of being in love with her. He knows he loves Ginger, but after trying a dating relationship for a short time, they both reached the conclusion that they may love each other deeply but they're not in love with one another. Nikolai is grateful they figured it out before it ruined their friendship, and he's extremely grateful that Mishka recognizes their love for what it is and isn't the least bit worried or jealous about it.
----------
Random things about Nikolai:
his birthday is 18 December
he started skating at age four
his favourite colour is green
he suffers from motion sickness and dislikes travelling
he doesn't like doctors and hospitals
he likes to cook
he's a cat person
his favourite seasons are autumn and winter
his hobbies include woodworking and drawing
his comfort food is peanut butter toast

Oh my god thinking about the Canadian Heritage Minutes just unlocked so many core memories. Like it was kind of wild you’re just eight years old or whatever and you’re watching YTV on a Friday night and they’re showing you cute lil videos about basketball or making maple syrup or Winnie the Pooh then maybe you get the one about the Underground Railroad or D Day or discovering insulin or the one where they show a whole ass brain surgery like I had some fucking questions
