Making art out of these lyrics has been kickin around my brain for years now.

An accumulation of my feelings about the devaluation of fiber arts, dayjob things, and AI stealing artists labour and then taking their jobs, claiming to love the outputs of artists but denying the work and livlihood of the people who make it.

Valentina Kuryliw’s latest book on human rights and the Holodomor titled "The Historian’s Craft Lesson on Human Rights and the Holodomor" will be available for free until the end of November on the Ukrainian World Congress' website. The PDF is available in both English and Ukrainian as well as an English powerpoint.

The book offers innovative methods for teaching high school students about the Holodomor and human rights, using a variety of historical sources and interactive tasks.  In the book, students take on the role of “young detectives,” investigating, analyzing, and synthesizing the information provided during the lesson. This approach promotes student engagement in the learning process, develops critical and historical thinking skills, helps express thoughts and ideas clearly, and encourages further exploration of the topic. In this lesson plan, teachers become facilitators in dialogue with students to help them arrive at their own conclusions, according to Kuryliw’s description.

This was a commissioned scarf I made for a friend of mine. This is chunky yarn in a basic assomption pattern commonly found in Métis sashes.

Fun fact: when I first learned this pattern, it was just called "double lightning." I didn't find out the history behind the pattern until I acquired my second book and did more research.

(I made this whole mask from scratch with cardboard. It's my first attempt to do anything like that, and I guess you could call it my 4th therian mask, and 5th mask in general if you count the kigu)

Top one is based on the Lost Villages Historical Society logo, bottom is based on a photograph by George Hickey taken in Aultsville, Ontario just before the flooding of the Seaway.

That anon is a glory hunter, and this anon was probably apart of the people that were praising him for wining in Monaco and now hating on him for an engine problem that wasn’t even his fault. It’s sad to see how some people claim to be Charles fans but shit on him at the first opportunity

I'm not sure whether they are a Charles fan or not, but either way, it's important to look at the whole picture of what is happening during a race. Sure, I jump to conclusions myself from time to time. But when you hear the explanations from Charles and Fred, you see some of the onboards and listen to the team radio, it is very clear that the team was trying to solve the issues that were obviously completely out of Charles's control.

In fact, I am in awe of how he managed to keep that car in one piece while driving on Hards in the pouring rain on a track they already didn't have grip on with the Inters! In a race where cars were skating around like Bambi on ice left and right, and 4 other cars DNF-ed because they hit walls/other cars.

This painting lived in my journal for far too long, tucked away among pages of scribbles and grocery lists, payday debt paydowns, and day-to-day doodles. Every time I flipped through the journal and saw it I wished that it had come out of me on canvas instead, so I could see it far more frequrently.

Honestly, it was a reminder that I could do things that I like to look at – a painting that a young version of myself would absolutely adore which is always the goal.

I failed art in highschool; it delayed my graduation.

You read that correctly. It shocked everyone, except myself and the teacher, obviously.

I attended every class, and worked my butt off, but I was a rebel Dottie, a loner, and instead of working on the projects as directed by the teacher and curriculum, I would take my own creative approach. I did not slack off, I just didn’t listen.

Turns out I have AuDHD and a pinch of the ODD, shocking absolutely no one, not even myself.

I was not the only fantastic artist in my highschool to meet the same fate. Go figure, artists and strict rules around art, do not go hand in hand. I did feel alone during this time though, I didn’t KNOW these other students met the same fate until years later when I was finally getting back into attempting art again. I posted on my socials around this time, noting the harm that can be done to a creative spirit in these types of settings – multiple others commented they went through the same thing. These are artists I was absolutely enamored with, who took years to decades off art because of a high school art curriculum. Thankfully, we’ve all started again and found at least part of our creative sparks again.

Pick up the paintbrush. Pick up the paint pen. Colour in a colouring book. Make something hideous. Be free, you owe no one beautiful art. Express yourself, and create.

Remember, practice makes better. There is no perfection.
