President Donald Trump on Monday agreed to a 30-day pause on his tariff threats against Mexico and Canada as America’s two largest trading partners took steps to appease his concerns about border security and drug trafficking. The pauses provide a cool-down period after a tumultuous few days that put North America on the cusp of a trade war that risked crushing economic growth, causing prices to soar and ending two of the United States’ most critical partnerships.

U.S. President Donald Trump dropped his plan to levy tariffs on Canada for at least 30 days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a series of commitments on Monday to improve border security. That means there's a ceasefire in a trade war that had the potential to inflict major economic pain on workers and businesses on both sides of the border. The country can let out a collective sigh of relief — at least for now. Trump signalled he's not yet done with Canada, saying today he's still looking for some sort of "final economic deal" with the country down the line.

I love how all Canada and Mexico had to do to pause these idiotic trade war tariffs was to take border programs that'd already started during Biden's term and make Trump think they were his idea.
He and his followers think they strong-armed us.
We just made a fool of them on the world stage.

Madeline Halpert and Jessica Murphy at BBC News:
President Donald Trump has agreed to hold off imposing 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days, pulling the North American neighbours back from the brink of a potentially damaging trade war. After last-minute calls with Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to reinforce his country's border with the US to clamp down on migration and the flow of the deadly drug fentanyl. Earlier, Trump made a deal with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. She agreed to reinforce the northern border with troops. In return the US would limit the flow of guns into Mexico. But a US tariff of 10% on Chinese imports has come into effect, after a deadline of 00:01 EST (05:00 GMT) on Tuesday passed. Shortly after, Beijing announced it was imposing retaliatory tariffs on a raft of American products, including 15% on coal and liquefied natural gas and 10% on crude oil and agricultural machinery.
Trump earlier said he planned to speak on the phone to his Chinese counterpart soon. He described the 10% import taxes as the "opening salvo" and said they could become "very, very substantial" if no agreement is made. Monday's breakthrough with Canada and Mexico came as they prepared retaliatory tariffs on American goods. After two phone calls on Monday, Trump and Trudeau posted on social media that they had reached a temporary agreement on securing the border that would avoid tariffs for at least 30 days. Both leaders portrayed the plan as a win. "As president, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome," Trump wrote on his social media site Truth Social.
Donald Trump temporarily pauses tariffs on its neighbours Mexico and Canada for one month, but not for geopolitical foe China. Mexico and Canada called Trump’s bluff.

Trump to pause tariffs for '30 days' after speaking with Trudeau.
Canadians aren't stupid. This is not about migrants (<1% in 2024) or fentanyl (also <1% in 2024) crossing the Canadian border into the USA. Goods/people that cross this border into the USA is controlled by US Border Services. The Canada Border Services Agency controls what comes into Canada.
Trump also threatened Canada's sovereignty again. It will be a cold day in hell before Canada becomes the 51st state.
Trump wants Canada's resources - water, energy, minerals, etc. without trade negotiations and contractual obligations with a foreign country and the tax revenue and control it would bring.
Trump wants access to our banking system - stronger and more highly regulated than the USA system. Note Canada's banks did not fall in 2008 when the USA system nearly collapsed the world economy.
Trump wants to control Canada's Arctic Passage. As climate change melts northern ice, this area becomes a new and shorter, more economical trade route.
This is about money and power for Trump - not the American people.
To learn more about the country of Canada 🇨🇦
#Canada#I'd rather eat Kraft Dinner everyday for the rest of my life than be the 51st state#Note - the Canadian Kraft Dinner because it has real cheese not some weird chemical 'cheese flavour'#Canada didn't vote for this#but we will deal with it in our own way#TeamCanada🇨🇦
