UPDATE: The actual fic is called- All That We Can Give on Ao3 by SunflowerAndStrawberrySpice332

So this idea came to me when I was thinking about Garmadon’s whole technically being a Lord thing, so long awaited Royalty/generally old fashioned AU idea and how each character plays into it! (Also for the sake of clarity I will be using Garmadon as the surname since Wu and Garmadon’s names are kinda confusing seeing that Wu is also technically a surname, so they will be Wu Garmadon and Haitao Garmadon)

Lloyd: Is the son of Lord and Lady Garmadon, he is most likely to be the successor to his uncles throne due to the fact he has no children of his own and would be training to become a ruler instead of a ninja (in this AU Wu would have to be the older brother but we’re already changing a bunch of stuff so oh well) and along the way he makes friends with other nobility/castle goers.

Lord (or Prince depending on circumstances)Haitao Garmadon: The mysterious cursed brother of the king, he is disliked due to the fact most blame his brothers failed assignation attempt on him, with most making assumptions due to his cursed appearance. He tends to stay out of public eye which only adds to the eerie mystique around his already confusing public image.

Wu Garmadon: The kindly old king of the Western Kingdom who has a lot of regrets, one of which being not admitting his feelings for Misako (Stole that right from the show), though he does not drag his nephew down into those personal matters.

Lady Misako Garmadon: The mother of Lloyd and the wife of Lord Garmadon, she is said to be far more outspoken than her husband with her own fair share of controversy due to disappearing from public eye for multiple years after her son was born before returning over ten years later. What she was doing is still unknown to the public.

Now onto the other ninja! (I am changing last names and stuff, be warned)

Prince Kai Shiroma: The fiery prince of the Eastern Kingdom, twin brother of crowned princess Nya he is head of the kingdoms military and quite proud of it, he has close ties to the southern kingdom and hopes to make connections with the Western kingdom through the possible up and coming ruler.

Crowned Princess Nya Shiroma: She is the head strong soon to be Empress of the Eastern kingdom, after her fathers disappearance she has been preparing to take his throne with her royal advisors taking care of things until she comes of age. She is sweet and quick witted with plenty of secrets she’d rather keep under wraps from the public who is already hesitant of her rule.

Zane Julien: The adoptive son of a world famous traveling doctor Zane is a walking miracle having been brought back practically from the brink of death by the kindly doctor who proceed to raise him as his own and train him in the ways of medicine, philosophy and what ever else sparked his fancy. Him and his father are often at important political gala’s due to his ability to smell poisons, quickly becoming close with some of the royals.

Lady Pixel Borg: Brilliant daughter of acclaimed inventor Barron Cyrus Borg, she is an inventor in her own right and often travels alongside Zane and Dr. Julien when the location piques her interest. She’s extremely intelligent and her and Zane are often seen as a rather terrifying duo when seen whispering at gala’s and other events. 

Duke Jay Walker: A very distant cousin of Lloyd but with his parents still tied to the royal family of the Southern kingdom, his parents are most known for their funding of wild architectural projects, large donations and tendency to disappear for months only to reemerge with some new creation or idea. He is attempting to court Princess Nya though no one can tell his true intentions with this.

Crowned Prince Cole Zielle: He is level headed prince of the Southern Kingdom, he is popular among the public due to his flashy talents and tendency for extravagance. His mother died when he was young leaving him with only his father whom is an adored figure due to his donations towards the arts and music. It’s said though that the prince disappears for days on end every once in a while for reason unknown to most, because everyone has secrets.

That’s all that I have for now, but I have started writing some semblance of scenes for the actual fic which I promise you will get! Idk if I changed to much but at the same time this is an AU and I can do what I want, for what is the point of art if we can mold it in way we best see it! Let me know if Y'all have any suggestions or ideas cause I'd love to hear it. Anyway now that I've info dumped I think I’m gonna go eat a muffin and then pass out!

i am going to be so meticulous in my sideblogs. just so you all know. and my guide for flfverse when i get that off the ground (it’s in the works! yay!). why?

let’s talk about fandom history and archives and the internet and art, friends

when i was first getting into the baby beginnings of writing free falling/flfverse, which is my first attempt at a bdsm au, i was already familiar with the trope from honestly too many years of fanfic given my age. but i went to the fanlore page and….it barely resembled the trope i’d been reading, and hadn’t seen major updates since it was created in 2011.

at first, i thought some of the info was just straight-up wrong, so naturally i went on a deep dive to figure it all out. i’m still picking at threads on that, the hyperfixation ran out so it’s slower going now, but the fanlore page has been updated with some more of the info i found since i started the project, if you’re curious.

but it is/was an absolute goddamn nightmare to look through. the trope is generally agreed to have begun in 2006, when one fic (Stargate Atlantis fic, General and Doctor Sheppard by Xanthe) created it and then people started copying that fic etc etc. but ofc this was still in a time of purges on ffn and livejournal, ao3 was in the works but wouldn’t be online for real for a couple more years, and fandom was also spread across other individual websites run by creators. which makes it really hard to track things.

i’m currently working on closing the gap between the early 2010s (when the trope started appearing on ao3) and 2006-7 (when it was initially gaining popularity) and let me tell you, very few people bother to note where they got ideas from, or if they made things up themselves. i can see the shapes of certain trends but can’t pin them down yet. it’s fascinating and frustrating because i don’t know, ever, if i’m just not looking in the right place or if some info is just lost forever to purges and the like.

but it’s not like it matters, right? i mean, who actually cares about mapping the origins and spread of a kinky fanfic trope. no great loss of culture if it all vanished tomorrow, right. it’s not like, in the grand scheme of things, my projects mean a lot to the world.

maybe, hear me out, all art is important and valuable. maybe i find this interesting and that’s enough reason to look into it. maybe the trope is just an excuse to write a lot of smut; maybe, sometimes, it’s something else. i could go on about that angle but i won’t, not in this post. i’m not an 18+ blog. but sometimes, yall, the sex is a metaphor. or something.

i work on fanlore in my spare time for a reason. i’m looking to volunteer at ao3 as soon as i can for a reason. fandom history is really more fucking important to me than it has any right to be and i wish i could articulate why but i can’t do any better than this:

if i don’t care, who will?

a big chunk of the world already dismisses fandom, or at least fan labor, as fast as it can. i’ve dedicated countless hours of my life to this and i would drop my life plans in a heartbeat and dedicate everything to it if i could make a living but it’s fan stuff so i can’t.

what i can do is make my little guides and my blogs and keep separate archives for myself and document everything as meticulously as possible so 17 years from now when some small internet sleuth comes looking for answers to a question no one else thought to ask yet they will at least have that much.

maybe that’s dramatic. i don’t know. i tend that way. i don’t mind much.

(side note: talking about my little quest for knowledge isn’t really me asking for help with it. for one, i’m very protective of it; it’s my job to do, i got here first. for two, no offense, hypothetical internet person, but i can almost guarantee i know more than you. every time i’ve cast a line out so far on the off chance i get useful info i only get things i already know or things that are straight-up wrong. if you want to try to contribute anyway, knock yourself out.)

I'm diagnosed with ADHD, Dyscalculia, Autism, General Anxiety, Major Depression, OCD, and.......some schizo type disorder otherwise specified? Idk I forget -

As for chronic illnesses -

Was born with a heart disease - that's called having Congenital Heart Disease. Don't have a full on diagnosis yet, but am quite certain I have prosopagnosia (face blindness). And there's def something up with my reproductive system. Endo maybe?? I still need to see a gynecologist. And apparently I TECHNICALLY have POTS, but I don't have tachycardia cause I had a procedure to stop the palpitations. So I'm diagnosed with Orthostatic Hypotension. Other than that, I have GERD and IBS/possibly IBD. Due to medical mishaps I didn't get a colonoscopy when I was supposed to, but was told that I probably have IBD. So yeah. Fun...

Also wouldn't be surprised if I had Sjogren's. Had blood work to see, but never had other tests to confirm. So who knows, man.

Also at this point I think I could have a connective tissue disorder??? My body's fucked, that's for sure!

hi wow if youre doing matchups with the redacted boys that sounds super fun so im gonna throw myself here since i recently joined the fandom

im an infp, a hufflepuff, a taurus, and i have adhd.

Im not super talkative at first but once you get to know me i am the most annoying bitch who will never, ever shut up. Im extremely emotional but also bottle up my negative feelings which means breakdowns are frequent. I’m clumsy and run into things a lot even with my glasses on, and i love superheroes. Despite being super super introverted, im pretty confrontational and don’t hesitate to stand up for what i believe in. I try to look on the bright side of things, but am,, not super great at it. Im protective of people i care about and get attached pretty easily, and am the type who can carry on a conversation like normal even if we havent talked in months. also i use nicknames like “babe” and shit platonically lol. my temperament is Melancholic.

My hobbies include writing (I tend to dump all the info about my characters onto anyone who’ll listen), focusing on whatever my hyperfixation currently is to the point where i forget to eat, and consuming terrible romance media (im currently rewatching all the twilight movies <3)

Question for the q&a: Do you have any authors that have influenced your writing?

oh god DEFINITELY. there's some specific ones out there where i've looked at their writing and went "wow, i'm taking your writing style" but it's mostly published book authors? there are obvi some fma fic authors that've inspired me tho! putting this under a read more for yalls sanity

1. definitely stephen king! i mentioned it in the notes for chapter 14 of hölle but around that time i read the shining and i was in LOVE. there were specific things you could probably nitpick and go "wow that seems kind of new" at in that chapter and that would be because i pretty much.. looked at the writing in there and got Super Inspired.

when i was writing hölle it was my first Big Fic (patent pending) and i did NOT have a consistent writing style. like. at all. 90% of it was me improving my writing skills as i went and actually getting used to writing fics??? hence a lot of.. hiatus time and...... not very good scheduling or drafting.......... ...

so when i read the shining i went (!!!) BECAUSE I WAS FIXATING ON IT SUPER HARD like. watching the obscure MINI-SERIES hard. i still kind of am but i specifically noticed the way king seemed to exaggerate thoughts in a very specific way

and i RAN with that. this specifically shows in holes and i thought it worked pretty well for the genre

at the time??? also especially apt because i like. literally just reread the shining. like i finished the day i wrote holes chapter 3 and that's why it was more heavy theme-wise i think???? BUT EITHER WAY stephen king's writing (particularly in the shining) inspired me a hell of a lot!

2. john boyne! i reread the boy in the striped pajamas recently and. BOY i am so sad still. definitely wasn't as influential writing-wise but theres small influences here and there? specifically in the way i structure sentences i think & GOD how i love the ending of that book. like. it drives me to tears every time

whenever i reread the ending of the book i think of how STRONGLY it was written? like. the words were really impressing and strong and i kind of wanted to mimic that in my writing whenever the mood fit and i can really only think of the time being where i utilized that being the ending of holes? i don't really like the ending sentences of the fic itself but i remember thinking about skimming over the epilogue again when it came to writing the last bit

3. william shakespeare is super fucking funny to put on here but like. i'm currently taking pre-college classes and we reread romeo and juliet and some other sonnets that he wrote and ive like. never recovered since lmao

i can't state THAT much that i drew from him because i have brainfog from the entire past year but i remember the class heavily focused on refreshing us on poetry? like. we went over the old freshman year poets (edgar allen poe was also pretty "!!! urge to write !!! but wow hes kinda fucked up!!!!!!!!" tho specifically /w the raven and annabel lee when it came to me writing) and despite how incoherent that sentence sounds idk there was just SOMETHING abt that entire course that made me want to start writing a lot the professor was just super good i loved her come home 💔

4. OKAY SO FOR FMA FIC AUTHORS. i've read a LOT of fics (like ive been through the entire parental roy and edling tags consecutively) so it's.. very hard to keep track... ... there're a few that definitely stand out tho!

* alightintheshadows i remember specifically being like. one of the first fma fic authors i read from and their stuff is GREAT. someone please tell me if they have a tumblr because i want to gush about their content so bad it's so good but like. i think they're what got me INTO writing fma fics in the first place? especially horror/plot-heavy stuff like that? i first read the cult on ff.net and i would NOT shut up about it for like. a week. i got super excited when their fics came over to ao3 and im pretty sure you can still see them quite a bit in my rec bookmarks

* DEFINITELY @liathgray i love cece so much they're so nice and i'm glad i've gotten to talk to them it's unreal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think they're one of the authors who actually made me actually go "oh. wow the fandom is still alive!!!" when i was going thru ao3 after i watched both fmas last summer because i'm.. pretty sure giants in the forest was still going on iirc? that fic's definitely what dragged me into the hyperfixation and interacting /w the fandom super hard lol

also i just REALLY like blackwell springs????? can we talk about blackwell springs because blackwell springs is my SHIT.

like i get that these r all probably common picks for author inspos but i remember also being around for it when it first came out -> the end and i loved it sm and i got so excited EVERY time it updated. like i would liveblog it to my boyfriend or read it really fast half-asleep before driving to class and i'd shove it into his FACE. 90% sure that fic's what either struck me to write hölle or keep writing it (i can't remember when it originally came out???) but i really need to get on reading whatever series capra's part of even tho i don't particularly like crossover stuff bc i see it Everywhere and it looks so good

when would the zodiac signs' seasons take place in the thedosian calendar?

so bc the zodiac signs are based on constellations and all the lore etc that accompanies them i'm not even gonna touch that (YET.....yet...) but since spring, summer, autumn, and winter start on the first days of guardian, bloomingtide, august, and firstfall, respectively, so would those particular seasons of the zodiac

thedas-equivalent-of-aries season would just be 1-30 guardian, bc irl the beginning of aries season coincides with the beginning of spring and continues until the sun moves into taurus; all the cardinal signs (aries, cancer, libra, capricorn) begin on the first of the season like that, so we can assume that – IF there are 12 zodiac signs in thedas – the sun is in each sign for approximately a month. so that in 3 months the next cardinal sign can coincide w the beginning of that season

imo it makes sense that (if we're assuming thedas also has 12 signs and that their sun spends roughly equal time in all of them) four of them would coincide w the beginning of the seasons. so like yeah thedas is fake and for all we know they have 10 zodiac signs and they all start on wildly different days, but then everything is just shooting in the dark and where's the fun in that. obviously the changing of the seasons is important to them bc their holidays center around them, therefore i don't think it's wildly out of the blue to think that whatever star sign system they have going on would similarly coincide w the changing seasons

again i'm not currently bothering with picking constellations/symbols/stories/traits/etc for each sign so i'll just say first, second, third etc. point being the seasons of the zodiac would actually be like they are below, rather than how they are irl (aka the 20th-ish of each month to the 20th-ish of the next; it's like that irl bc our calendar is stupid and the beginning of the seasons randomly happens 2/3 of the way thru the month):

first sign = begins spring, 1-30 guardian

second sign ≈ 1-30 drakonis

third sign ≈ 1-30 cloudreach

okay so we have cardinal signs, what about fixed and mutable signs?

the cardinal signs are CALLED the cardinal signs bc they begin the seasons; they're the ~get up and goers~ of the zodiac, motivated, leaders, trail blazers, energetic, etc. they litchrally bring in the changes of the season so that makes sense right

so IF we are to continue w that logic — and here's where i'm getting (even more) conjecture-y, but i feel p confident that since 4 of the 5 major holidays in thedas are based on the changing seasons aka thats important — then the traits of the thedas-equivalent of those signs would also have similarities to the irl cardinal signs (namely the traits listed above)

but there are also FIXED signs and MUTABLE signs: so called bc fixed signs are firmly planted in the middle of each season (taurus in spring, leo in summer, scorpio in autumn, aquarius in winter) and bc mutable signs precede the major change from one season to the next (gemini from spring to summer, virgo from summer to autumn, sagittarius from autumn to winter, pisces from winter-to-spring)

and again bc these are based on the seasons, it also makes sense to me that, generally speaking, the signs in the middle and at the end of the seasons would also be distinct in some way. and probably have similarities to irl fixed and mutable signs, tho i'm not as obstinate about that as i am abt the cardinal signs. but anyway MOVING ON

also since we only have so many constellations we see in-game, and since they each come with a codex giving us at least a little background info (aka CRUMBS), any suggestions of which constellations are part of the zodiac are based on those specifically. obviously in real life theres a bazillion constellations that aren’t part of the zodiac, but we do not have the luxury of knowing every constellation in thedas so i am going with what we got

the thedosian constellation map (the canon one) is different than the fan-made sky map, but because i highly doubt anyone at bioware could’ve predicted someone would be As Insane As I Am Being Right Now about it, i don’t think they probably put a lot of thought into making it lmao. the fan made sky map DID have thought put into it tho, and it actually features the constellations we see in-game, so i’m going w that one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

AND. i’m gonna look at the names of the months (both the fancy ancient tevinter names and the ~low/common~ names) in comparison w the constellations we have at our disposal bc why the fuck wouldn’t they be related in some way. this has no basis in any deeper logic than “maybe the fact that the ‘common’ name for this month is drakonis has somethinng to do with the constellation draconis idfk” but like. it’s literally the same name but with one letter (that makes the same sound) changed. i don’t think i’m asking too much here lmao

signs that start the seasons

wintersend is canonically associated with the old god urthemiel; the codex entry for the constellation bellitanus states it (is believed that it) was originally associated with urthemiel. using the same reasoning as with satinalis/satinalia, i’m gonna assume that bellitanus-as-a-zodiac-season would start with wintersend and last through the whole of guardian

summerday was once called andoralis, dedicated to the old god andoral; the codex entry for the constellation servani states it is thought to be representative of andoral, but where the wiki says andoral is the god of unity, the codex says andoral was the god of slaves. (doesn’t clarify if andoral is like, a figure to which the enslaved would turn to in their plight, as like a savior? or whether andoral is...just associated with slaves in some way.) i have no idea what the fuck to do w that except assume bioware is back on their bullshit! i’m gonna come back to this later

all soul’s day was once funalis, dedicated to dumat, old god of silence; the codex entry for the constellation silentir (which literally means ‘silence’ lmao) is usually said to represent dumat. so by this logic we might say the zodiac season for silentir begins with all soul’s day and ends with the last day of august

the constellation satinalis is canonically associated with satinalia, so it makes sense to me that if satinalis is part of the zodiac, its season would start with satinalia / last through the month in which the holiday takes place. aka firstfall

with these in mind, we have (tentatively) 3 of our 4 cardinal signs aka the signs that begin the seasons: bellitanus for spring, silentir for autumn, and satinalis for winter

looking at the fan-made sky map, these aren’t super evenly spaced apart (but then again neither are irl constellations perfectly proportioned so whatever!) HOWEVER. they do still, at least vaguely 😭, follow a clockwise pattern in the correct order of guardian/spring → summerday/bloomingtide → all soul’s day/august → satinalia/firstfall. it’s about the small victories ok *inquisitor ameridan voice* take moments of happiness where you find them or whatever

ELUVIA: commonly called “sacrifice,” it’s (apparently) based on an orlesian tale in which a woman is saved from a “””lustful mage””” (i love bioware i love this frachise) by being placed in the sky and becoming a constellation. before this inspiring tale that is definitely not anti mage propaganda, eluvia may have represented razikale, tevinter old god of mystery. the imagery of this constellation is a seated woman with a cloud right above her - literally like her head is in the clouds (also bc it sounds like ‘eluvian’ i’m like 👀)

i’m inclined to pair this one up with cloudreach both bc the ancient tevinter name is “eluviesta” and bc the woman in the story is literally. in the clouds. simple enough

PERAQUIALUS: it’s a boat! but apparently a “primitive vessel” sailed by ancient peoples like the neromenians. according to the codex the translation is usually ‘across the sea’ rather than ‘boat’ but that doesnt rly help me lol

Zombie symbolism in media? Body snatchers? That sounds extremely interesting 👀👀👀

OOOOOOOOOOH ARE YOU READY FOR ME TO RANT? CUZ I’M GONNA RANT BABY. YALL WANNA SEE HOW HARD I CAN HYPERFIXATE???

I’ll leave my ramblings under the cut.

The Bodysnatchers thing is a bit quicker to explain so I’ll start with that. Basically, Invasion of the Body Snatchers was released in 1956, about a small town where the people are slowly but surely replaced and replicated by emotionless hivemind pod aliens. It was a pretty obvious metaphor for the red scare and America’s fear of the ‘growing threat of communism’ invading their society. A communist could look like anyone and be anyone, after all.

Naturally, the bodysnatcher concept got rebooted a few times - Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1978), Body Snatchers (1993), and The Invasion (2007), just off the top of my head. You’re all probably very familiar with the core concept: people are slowly being replaced by foreign duplicates. 

But while the monster has remained roughly the same, the theme has not. In earlier renditions, Bodysnatchers symbolized communism. But in later renditions, the narratives shifted to symbolize freedom of expression and individualism - that is, people’s ability to express and think for themselves being taken away. That’s because freedom of thought/individuality is a much more pressing threat on our minds in the current climate. Most people aren’t scared of communists anymore, but we are scared of having our free will taken away from us. 

The best indicator of the era in which a story is created is its villain. Stories written circa 9/11 have villains that are foreign, because foreign terrorism was a big fear in the early 2000s. In the past, villains were black people, because white people were racist (and still are, but more blatantly so in the past). 

Alright, now for the fun part.

ZOMBIES

Although the concept has existed in Haitian voodooism for ages, the first instance of zombies in western fiction was a book called The Magic Island written by William Seabrook in 1929. Basically ol Seabrook took a trip to Haiti and saw all the slaves acting tired and ‘brutish’ and, having learned about the voodoo ‘zombi’, believed the slaves were zombies, and thus put them in his book.

The first zombie story in film was actually an adaptation of Seabrook’s accounts, called White Zombie (1932). It was about a couple who takes a trip to Haiti, only for the woman to be turned into a zombie and enchanted into being a Haitian’s romantic slave. SUPER racist, if you couldn’t tell, but not only does it reflect the state of entertainment of the era - Dracula and Frankenstein had both been released around the same time - but it also reflects American cultural fears. That is, the fear of white people losing their authoritative control over the world. White fright.

Naturally, the box office success of White Zombie inspired a whole bunch of other remakes and spinoffs in the newly minted zombie genre, most of them taking a similar Haitian voodoo approach. Within a decade, zombies had grown from an obscure bit of Haitian lore to a fully integrated part of American pop culture. Movies, songs, books, cocktails, etc. 

But this was also a time for WWII to roll around and, much like the Bodysnatchers, zombie symbolism evolved to fit the times. Now zombies experienced a shift from white fright and ethnic spirituality to something a bit more secular. Now they were a product of foreign science created to perpetuate warmongering schemes. In King of Zombies (1941), a spy uses zombies to try and force a US Admiral to share his secrets. And Steve Sekely’s Revenge of the Zombies (1943) became the first instance of Nazi zombies. 

Then came the atom bomb, and once more zombie symbolism shifted to fears of radiation and communism. The most on-the-nose example of this is Creature With the Atom Brain (1955).

Then came the Vietnam War, and people started fearing an uncontrollable, unconscionable military. In Night of the Living Dead (1968), zombies were caused by radiation from a space probe, combining both nuclear and space-race motifs, as well as a harsh government that would cause you just as much problems as the zombies. One could argue that the zombies in the Living Dead series represent military soldiers, or more likely the military-industrial complex as a whole, which is presented as mindless in its pursuit of violence.

The Living Dead series also introduced a new mainstay to the genre: guns. Military stuff. Fighting. Battle. And that became a major milestone in the evolution of zombie representation in media. This was only exacerbated by the political climate of the time. In the latter half of the 20th century, there were a lot of wars. Vietnam, Korea, Arab Spring, Bay of Pigs, America’s various invasions and attacks on Middle Eastern nations, etc. Naturally the public were concerned by all this fighting, and the nature of zombie fiction very much evolved to match this.

But the late 1900s weren’t just a place of war. They were also a place of increasing economic disparity and inequal wealth distribution. In the 70s and 80s, the wage gap widened astronomically, while consumerism remained steadily on the rise. And so, zombies symbolized something else: late-stage capitalism. Specifically, capitalist consumption - mindless consumption. For example, in Dawn of the Dead (1978), zombies attack a mall, and with it the hedonistic lifestyles of the people taking refuge there. This iteration props up zombies as the consumers, and it is their mindless consumption that causes the fall of the very system they were overindulging in.

Then there was the AIDS scare, and the zombie threat evolved to match something that we can all vibe with here in the time of COVID: contagion. Now the zombie condition was something you could get infected with and turn into. In a video game called Resident Evil (1996), the main antagonist was a pharmaceutical company called the Umbrella Corporation that’s been experimenting with viruses and bio-warfare. In 28 Days Later (2002), viral apes escape a research lab and infect an unsuspecting public.

Nowadays, zombies are a means of expressing our contemporary fears of apocalypse. It’s no secret that the world has been on the brink for a while now, and everyone is waiting with bated breath for the other shoe to drop. Post-apocalypse zombie movies act as simultaneous male power fantasy, expression of contemporary cynicism, an expression of war sentiments, and a product of the zombie’s storied symbolic history. People are no longer able to trust the government, and in many ways people have a hard time trusting each other, and this manifests as an every-man-for-himself survivalist narrative. 

So why have zombies endured for so long, despite changing so much? Why are we so fascinated by them? Well, many say that it’s because zombies are a way for us to express our fears of apocalypse. Communism, radiation, contagion - these are all threats to the country’s wellbeing. Some might even say that zombies represent a threat to conversative America/white nationalism, what with the inclusion of voodooism, foreign entities, and late-stage capitalism being viewed as enemies.

Personally, I might partly agree with the conservative America thing, but I don’t think zombies exist to project our fears onto. That’s just how villains and monsters work in general. In fiction, the conflict’s stakes don’t hit home unless the villain is intimidating. The hero has to fight something scary for us to be invested in their struggles. But the definition of what makes something scary is different for every different generation and social group. Maybe that scary thing is foreign invaders, or illness, or losing a loved one, or a government takeover. As such, the stories of that era mold to fit the fears of that era. It’s why we see so many government conspiracy thrillers right now; it’s because we’re all afraid of the government and what it can do to us.

So if projecting societal fears onto the story’s villain is a commonplace practice, then what makes zombies so special? Why have they lasted so long and so prevalently? I would argue it’s because the concept of a zombie, at its core, plays at a long-standing American ideal: freedom.

Why did people migrate to the New World? Religious freedom. Why did we start the Revolutionary War and become our own country? Freedom from England’s authority. Why was the Civil War a thing? The south wanted freedom from the north - and in a remarkable display of irony, they wanted to use that freedom to oppress black people. Why are we so obsessed with capitalism? Economic freedom.

Look back at each symbolic iteration of the zombie. What’s the common thread? In the 20s/30s, it was about white fright. The fear that black people could rise up against them and take away their perceived ‘freedom’ (which was really just tyrannical authority, but whatever). During WWII, it was about foreign threats coming in and taking over our country. During Vietnam, it became about our military spinning out of control and hecking things up for the rest of us. In the 80s/90s, it was about capitalism turning us into mindless consumers. Then it was about plagues and hiveminds and the collapse of society as a whole, destroying everything we thought we knew and throwing our whole lives into disarray. In just about every symbolic iteration, freedom and power have been major elements under threat.

And even deeper than that, what is a zombie? It’s someone who, for whatever reason, is a mindlessly violent creature that cannot think beyond base animal impulses and a desire to consume flesh. You can no longer think for yourself. Everything that made you who you are is gone.

Becoming a zombie is the ultimate violation of someone’s personal freedom. And that terrifies Americans.

Although an interesting - and concerning - phenomenon is this new wave of wish fulfillment zombie-ism. You know, the gun-toting action movie hero who has the personality of soggy toast and a jaw so chiseled it could decapitate the undead. That violent survivalist notion of living off the grid and being a total badass all the while. It speaks to men who, for whatever reason, feel their masculinity and dominance is under threat. So they project their desires to compensate for their lack of masculine control onto zombie fiction, granting them personal freedom from obligations and expectations (and feminism) to live out their solo macho fantasies by engaging in low- to no-consequence combat. And in doing so, completely disregarding the fact that those same zombies were once people who cruelly had their freedom of self ripped away from them. Gaining their own freedom through the persecution of others (zombies). And if that doesn’t sum up the white conservative experience, I don’t know what does.

So yeah. That’s zombies, y’all.

hell yeah!! i had a phase for it way before (though i rarely played) and now salmonidparty reawakened it by picking up Webber again. plus now that ive met some friends through a D/ST streamer on T/witch i play a lot more than i used to. for scale, i’ve watched almost all of the animated videos and i’ve read a lot of the survivors’ wikipedia pages XD

Do I like the fandom itself?

i haven’t looked into the fandom a lot either now or before, but the people ive seen in the D/ST rpc are p cool! it’s one of the few groups where i’d love to follow all of yall just to watch from a distance. i don’t know how i’d slot in outside of what i’ve plotted out with my Hornet and @salmonidparty‘s (very good) W/ebber, especially when i currently don’t write much, so i shall just Stare

Who’s my favorite character?

from the VERY beginning, W/endy! i like the supernatural aspect of her, her bond with A/bigail, and the fact that she always has a companion. i don’t like being alone and its nice that A/bigail can help in fights (which i have an excuse to avoid participating in in general because W/endy specifically does less damage). also i suck at keeping my sanity up and die to Crawling Horrors the most so her losing less from darkness is helpful as hell XD

If I had to choose, who would I roleplay?

god- if i could make the hyperfixation long term i’d love to do W/endy in my Dealmaker AU. i know it’s literally just W/endy spliced with W/ortox’s powers and an unoriginal outfit design but i love it too much. or maybe i’d just try W/endy normally and have that as a verse? either way i need to draw her more

also Triumphant alt W/ilson but i think that’s more of me liking the aesthetic (and corruption theme) than in terms of actual writing lmao

Candid with MADD

As someone who's had this for as long as I can remember, I can say the root of my MADD is my anxiety. I never dealt with change well so when I entered uni my grades suffered because I would hyperfixate on daydreams. I had several traumatic thing happen to me my freshman year and it just made it worse. I had a stalker. I fell in love for the first time with a close friend who basically played with my feelings while wooing another girl. My mom was physically and verbally abusing me because her boyfriend "favored" me. (Yes, all in a year, talk about whiplash). It left me in a crippled mental state where my only safe zone was my imagination. Then it became a full on coping mechanism.

After working as a nurse in panini and seeing so much death, I got a therapist. Luckly this go round my MADD didn't act up as bad.

Before, I would miss class because I started prioritizing my coping mechanism over reality.

So when I got a therapist, I was literally at a stand still on whether to discuss it or not. I have heard people on this site get put on antipsychotics and being diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. Which is wild to me, I know what I imagine isn't real. Its not delusions. And yeah my priorities were messed up but like I knew it was wrong, like an alcoholic knows they shouldn't be near alcohol; I shouldn't be daydreaming when I got shit to do hahaha.

So my conundrum was, should I tell her? I decided against it the minute she told me to quit my job, which was my first session💀💀 She seems like a cool person but I don't trust her to that extent. Hell, I literally just told my best friend since kindergarten about it 3 years ago.

Can I have a job? Yes. Did I graduate college? Barely. But it took me YEARS to realize my MADD was a symptom of my own anxiety. And the only thing stopping me from getting medications was that I know that I might not ever get to immerse myself into a world I have built since I was 12. Every little detail I have made might just become a distant memory and that scares me because that world has kept me sane and safe. Reality looks so scary in comparison. MADD gave me a sense of normalcy during the worst parts of my career. It made me feel whole even when i would hang out with friends and feel in adequate when I compared myself to them. Even when my mom and I were not really speaking to each other I never felt alone. My MADD never let me feel alone. So it's wild to throw years of work away but at one point you've got to.

I decided that if my MADD ever gets in the way of my daily life I'll do it. So far my work schedule allows me to daydream and get it out my system. I still have an active social life, meet new people, and have a fulfilling career (things I couldn't do in my early 20s). It's not overwhelming like it used to be and I have a better control than when I was younger. I decided to be the main character of my life. Starting therapy for my anxiety helped out a lot. Talking to someone about my traumas helped. I have been healing slowly with some good old CBT and better coping mechanism.

I know eventually I'll need to get medicated for my anxiety. It comes and goes in waves, but currently I got a good handle on it. I owe that to my support group. I spoke to my hospital psychiatrist about being hesitant on meds because it really wasn't effecting my daily life. I could still complete tasks, work my hours and literally had designated times to feel any compartmentalized emotion I tucked away weekly (fucked up I know, but you can't cry during a code yall). He laughed and insisted I try some CBT and get some sun. Obviously he didn't know anything else but I can breathe easier and my MADD hasn't been as bad. Which is amazing! I still feel a bit nuts sometimes when I catch myself. Which happens more often now. Ya know, when you become self aware of the pacing and muttering. I just stop what I'm doing and go do something else. I take it as a sign that I should stop.

I'm hoping with some more time I can stop all together without going through withdrawals. Slowly and with a lot of patience with myself. Maybe one day I'll write a whole fiction novel on my favorite characters. Maybe they'll each get their own story told. All I know is I would like to stop someday and be normal. I just want the world I made buried with some dignity.

I got a toxic relationship with my imagination. But I'm learning to keep it under control and to not let it stop me from living life. I'm pushing thirty. I can't live life hidden away in my safe space. I am grateful to have this weird ass coping mechanism but I need to get rid of it and not be afraid to live.

Hey. I'm just writing to say thanks for posting about the things you like. I watched hometown cha cha cha because it's been on your page lately and looked fun and happy. Its the first k-drama I've watched. I binged it in a day (instead of what I was supposed to do with my day off) and its delightful! I'll probably watch hosptial playlist next.

OH MY GOD I JUST SAW THIS!! First of all I'm flattered, I didn't think anyone actually sees my posts. Home town cha cha cha is incredible from the acting to the cinematography. I swooned and I cried lol. It's a beautiful show. I totally reccomend Hospital Playlist. Heart warming, realistic in the sense that medicine doesn't always have a happy ending but something will always happen that reignited your passion for it. As a nurse, I fuckin loved it. And as die hard romantic I fuckin loved it. Let me know what you think! My tumblr tends to be just a dump on all the things I love and I'm happy I could introduce someone to something new💖
