Whew, wow, I was going to dismiss this movie away... until the last few minutes changed my mind. A great example of how an ending makes or breaks a story. Not a Must Watch. But still a watch for the curious.
Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 Japanese epic kaiju film directed, written, and with visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. Produced by Toho Studios and Robot Communications and distributed by Toho, starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki.

🎃 ROTTMNT Halloween Headcanons 🎃
Horror Movies
Summary: The Hamato siblings & horror movies
Headcanons for: Raph, Donnie, Leo, Mikey, & April
Halloween Headcanons - Haunted House Edition
Halloween Headcanons - Haunted House (x Reader ver.)
i added a few horror movie references here and there (betcha can't name 'em all!)
Raph:
Favorite genre: Zombie horror
Least favorite genre: Gore/Torture
isn't too fond of horror movies; would rather watch action movies
he's convinced that 'based on a true story' movies are 100% real
easily jumpscared but tries to laugh it off every time
leo will tease him about his fear stink tho
believes twilight technically counts as horror
"it's a movie about vampires and high school! how'zat not scary?"
might watch horror movies alone if he's surrounded by plushies and his blanket
won't sleep all night tho
leaves the light on after a horror marathon "just in case"
Donnie:
Favorite genre: Psychological when done right; Time-loop horror
Least favorite genre: Found footage
isn't too bothered by horror movies
but plot holes will frustrate him to no end
and he WILL make his brothers listen to him rant about it afterwards
"SCOFF! he was OBVIOUSLY a ghost, literally no one else noticed him or talked to him!"
prefers j-horror (subbed even tho he understands japanese)
he doesn't have a favorite movie but he does like the japanese film 'horrors of malformed men' (江戸川乱歩全集恐怖奇形人間)
considers found footage horror movies inferior and 'lazy'
spends most of the movie criticizing the characters and making fun of the villain
was terrified of pennywise as a kid (dvd rental mix-up that went unnoticed by papa splinter)
for the longest time, he thought pennywise lived in their sewers
Leo:
Favorite genre: Slasher movies; Parody horror
Least favorite genre: Classic
he loves horror movies and binges them for halloween
joins in on donnie's commentary, which mildly annoys mikey and raph
most of leo's commentary is just making fun of his brothers
"oh hey, don bon! i had no idea you were on tv... congrats on the blob monster role~!"
finds silent horror movies to be incredibly booooring
enjoys campy 80s horror (evil dead 2, gremlins, creepshow, ect)
unironically considers killer klowns from outer space a masterpiece
is banned from picking movies bc of this
might get spooked from time to time
not that he'll admit it
nothing can shake this ninja warrior, nuh uh no way
Mikey:
Favorite genre: Paranormal/Ghost movies
Least favorite genre: Psychological
considers himself a "horror expert" and owns all the classics
likes to play "who would survive this plot" with his brothers during the movie
according to him, leo's usually the most likely to die first
has a plan for every possible zombie apocalypse scenario (that he totally didn't get from a bunch of zombie movies)
"i'm not saying that he *should*, but donnie could totally build a giant prison maze for ghosts. it'll be just like the movie!"
will occasionally watch scary movies alone in the dark
overestimates his fearlessness every time-
loves a good ghost movie but he's a bit of a scaredy cat
might need a few cutesy romance movies afterwards to feel better
April:
Favorite genre: Found footage
Least favorite genre: Slasher/Killer horror
loves a good horror movie binge and will jump on any chance to watch them with her brothers
always ready with halloween themed snacks and candies
is also a self-proclaimed "horror expert"
she knows a lot more than mikey tho
can tell you about the directors, the history of horror movies, and the stories the movies are based on with complete detail
"movie night at my place? i've got just the thing to scare y'all out of your shells~"
rec is probably one of her top 5 favorite movies
likes the idea of creating her own found footage horror movie
mikey, leo, and splinter are all on board to be in her movie
donnie and raph? not so much

Random Godzilla thoughts:
I've been on a Godzilla binge recently, having watched Monarch Legacy, Godzilla X Kong, Minus One, and Chibi Godzilla just this year and I've had some interesting thoughts on all of them that I hope Godzilla fans can answer!
It's funny how in the American movies, Minus One, and some of the classic movies too, Godzilla still has the origin of being a unique standalone prehistoric monster in the modern day that just gets bigger and irradiated from the atomic testing, as opposed to being an ordinary animal that gets mutated into a kaiju (Which was a misconception I had as a little kid). It's interesting how that specific choice adds an extra layer of needing to suspend disbelief- not necessarily in a bad way though!
Also it's interesting how Godzilla gets his name in-universe between versions, seeing as the real origin for it is so lighthearted and campy, being "Gorilla" + "Kujira" (Japanese for whale) because he was meant to be SO much more of a giant monster than that darned American King Kong, haha. In Minus One it's just what the locals of the Pacific island called it, but in the Monsterverse we still don't actually know where the name comes from. In the Monarch Legacy flashbacks it's just referred to as "the creature" or something, and then in a more recent 1950s flashback, Dr Keiko is already calling it Gojira with no explanation on where the name came from. So as the Monsterverse shows and movies continue, I'll be interested to see if they ever want to explain where the name comes from! In GxK, Skar King and Shimo are named in ancient translated Iwi records (Isn't it WILD that the Iwi named Shimo after the Japanese word for frost?) so maybe Godzilla's name exists in some old carving too, elsewhere in the Monsterverse.
My whole life I've thought the beam of energy Godzilla fires from his mouth was officially called the Atomic Breath. But in Godzilla X Kong, Minus One, AND Chibi Godzilla, it's officially called a Heat Ray. So is "Atomic Breath" just a fanon thing? Because actually it would make a lot of sense- in the back of my mind I always wondered how Godzilla movies rarely talked much about how the mere presence of something as radioactive as Godzilla should make even the un-destroyed parts of cities uninhabitable after an attack (The Monsterverse films get away with it by claiming that many Titans eat "bad" radiation and convert it into "good" radiation). But if the beam is just mostly heat energy with very little radiation, that makes more sense. And even moreso for the versions of Godzilla who actively eat radiation to live, because otherwise why would they just spit it back out all over again?
If I got something wrong here, hardcore Godzilla fans are more than welcome to clown me, but I'd love to hear more discussion on small little details like these that are surprisingly consistent across very different Godzilla projects!

Books that I’ve read recently and would recommend. 🖤 Part 2
A Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson. A reimagining of Dracula’s brides, written in letters to Dracula from his first wife, Constanta. I love anything vampire-related and can’t even describe how much I loved this book.
A God in the Shed by J. -F. Dubeau. A fantastic horror novel set in a messed up little town. A murder investigation, a serial killer, a god trapped in a shed (literally), the occult, ancient evils, blood and gore, and lots of twists and turns.
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. A historical/grimdark fantasy novel heavily inspired by the Second Sino-Japanese war. Very violent and graphic, but an amazing read.
My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. A fun 80s demon possession story set during the satanic panic. A teen girl drops acid, gets lost in the woods, and accidentally gets possessed by a demon — and it’s up to her friend to save her. Gorey and campy.
Maggie’s Grave by David Sodergren. A pregnant woman, falsely accused of being a witch and brutally murdered, takes revenge on a Scottish town centuries later. Fun, fast-paced folk horror meets splatterpunk with an endless amount of gore.
The Island by Adrian McKinty. A tense, fast-paced thriller set in in an island off of the coast of Australia. This book genuinely stressed me out and made me want to bite my nails, but I couldn’t put it down. A bit of Wolf Creek vibes.
Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury. A ghost story and psychological horror with dual timelines. Family drama, a haunted house, toxic parents, etc.
Never Lie by Freida McFadden. A psychological thriller with a great twist. When their realtor doesn’t show up, newlyweds take shelter from a blizzard in a manor that belongs to a missing psychiatrist.
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim. This book and the world within it makes my heart flutter. A dreamy, whimsical fairy tale blended with East Asian folklore.
The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf. An atmospheric mystery/thriller. A writer travels to an isolated farmhouse where two unsolved murders and the disappearance of a girl took place decades earlier, and plans to finish her book while snowed in. Things go down hill after she finds a young child outside and decides to bring him in from the cold.
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati. A retelling of Greek mythology, and such a beautiful and heartbreaking book.
A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon. A a high fantasy novel and standalone prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree. Amazing world building, amazing writing, amazing characters, and dragons.
Ring by Koji Suzuki. I’ve always loved the films, both Ringu and The Ring, but I’ve never read the book until now and I highly recommend it if you haven’t either.

Simple enough question ahoy;
What are each of the Batfam’s favorite Godzilla movies, both Toho and Monsterverse?
Oooh, thank for the excellent ask! I will take any chance I can get to use my abundant, yet useless, knowledge of Godzilla. My apologies upfront. I can a little... pedantic about these things.
Bruce - He loves the Millennium era movies, particularly Godzilla vs Mech-Godzilla (1999).
There’s one specific line you can only get in the dubbed version, “Too many meetings can change a man’s destiny”. It’s a motto inscribed in Bruce’s heart. He loves to mumble it to Alfred as he heads out the Wayne Enterprises for a Board Meeting.
Dick & Tim - These two are on the same page and adore the campiness, bad dubbing and dreadful special effects of the Showa Era. 1969′s All Monsters Attack is their favorite for sheer over-the-top lunacy.
There’s Daddy Godzilla, kid Minizilla, some strange Japanese child in shorts with an overactive imagination and (wait for it) bank robbers. Tim has been known to get laughing so hard he snorts Zesti through his nose when Dick starts inserting his own dialogue or singing love songs to various Kaiju.
Jason - He will always default to 1998′s Godzilla done by Roland Emmerich.
It’s partly because he knows everyone else hates the movie. Jason gets a big kick out seeing New York City thoroughly trashed - especially Madison Square Garden. Seeing the home of the hated Knicks go up in flames never fails to make him smile.
Cassandra - At first she was confused about cheering for a large bizarre lizard who caused more property damage than Bane on a bender but eventually warmed up to the big green guy. She is currently enamored of the Reiwa era film, Shin Godzilla (2106).
She likes the fourth evolution where he can shoot lasers from his mouth, spines and tail all at once. It’s very efficient. And pretty.
Damian - Dami considered himself a Godzilla purist, so nothing but the original Godzilla (1954) will do for him.
He appreciates the subtle cinematography and the idea of Godzilla representing the atomic bomb. Although he’d never admit it, Damian does get a kick out of seeing Godzilla rise from Tokyo Bay to level the city.
Stephanie hates everything about the movies. Tim once dragged her to a retro film festive that showed all the Toho movies. In order. For two full days. Just the sound of Godzilla’s roar is enough to make her run for hills.
Barbara likes the modern Legendary movies best, particularly Godzilla King of The Monsters (2019).
Why? Because as a college student she spent one miserable summer in Boston going to seminar at Boston University. She lived in a cramped, un-airconditioned dorm room that smelled like feet. Watching Godzilla, King Ghidora, Mothra and Rodan level a good swath of the city feel a little bit like karma for her. She’s been known to cackle in an unhinged manner when Fenway Park gets stomped. Dick finds it vaguely unsettling.
Duke - He’s not really up to date on all of the various versions of Gojira, but he’s let himself be talked into going to the midnight premiere of Godzilla Minus One when it comes out in December.
Dick and Tim are planning to do cosplay, so Duke isn’t quite sure what he’s gotten himself into.

My favorite "bad" horror movies
I am putting "bad" in quotation marks because good and bad cinema is in the eye of the beholder. In this case I'm using limited budget, film obscurity, or critical response to define "badness." Because they have become so mainstream (cult classics) I will not put Hocus Pocus or Hocus Pocus 2 on this list though I love them. I also won't have the TV mini-series Over the Garden Wall on the list because even though it has fallen into some obscurity, it does have a fair sized cult following. I actually considered putting Frank Langella's Dracula from 1979 on this list just because the original color-restored version is so hard to find and on most "Who is your favorite Dracula?" memes accidentally leave him off. But it was popular once, was a Broadway play, and was made by Universal studios. So it's probably not obscure enough for this list. And though it had a very limited theatrical release that was kind of suppressed I won't be putting Fright Night: Part 2 from 1989 on this list, despite my love for it. It was popular enough to spawn a comic book spin-off. Anyway, these are my favorite "bad" (I don't think of them as bad) movies. Be warned, I like a LOT of movies that many might consider bad so if you're surprised one isn't on this list it could be that I was oblivious to the fact that someone might consider that particular one bad.
13. Plan 9 from outer Space. I feel I probably shouldn't put this on the list since it's become so mainstream but this is probably the most well-known bad movie, from director Ed Wood. Aliens attempt to use controlled zombies to invade the world. An alternate choice for the 13 spot is Warm Bodies. I have a soft spot for this one. Many hated it out-of-hand as the zombie version of Twilight but actually R (the protagonist) is much smarter than Edward Cullen. Also it's one of the only Zombie Apocalypse movies I've ever seen with a happy ending.
12. Dracula: Sovereign of the damned. A badly dubbed Japanese anime based on Marvel's Tomb of Dracula comics but working around the fact that they didn't bother securing the rights to use the character Blade, The vampire Hunter. So imagine trying to compress the entirety of Tomb of Dracula into an hour and a half animated movie, and leaving out one of the main characters from those comics. It would be like if they adapted all of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman into a single badly-dubbed animated movie, and left Death of The Endless out. This one is a bit obscure but you can find it to watch on Youtube
11. The Halloween Tree. It's hard to call this a "bad" movie but it has, unfortunately become obscure. It actually won an Emmy. It's a made for TV animated movie. It has a gorgeous score and it's beautifully animated. It's narrated by the great Ray Bradbury and based on his novel, which was inspired by his disappointment in the "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown." The plot is a group of trick or treaters go on a surreal adventure through time, learning the history of Halloween with their guide, Moundshroud (Death) and save the life of their dying friend, Joe Pipkin. 10. I, Frankenstein. Originally this was supposed to be set in the same continuity as Underworld but with a much lower budget and a much less sexy protagonist it didn't grab attention. Essentially it's The Frankenstein Monster and an army of righteous gargoyles vs. Demons. It's campy but I like campy. It gets points for using the novel as the backstory and then doing their own thing. Also Bill Nighy is a great villain. 9. Dario Argento's Dracula (Also briefly released as Dracula 3D). I lovingly nicknamed this one Mantis Drac because there's a scene where Dracula trans forms into a (bad CG) seven foot tall female praying mantis. He also (in a better effect) takes owl and wolf form. It's similar to the typical Hammer Dracula movie. It feels much older than it actually is. It has Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing and some of his behavior comes off as a bit random. 8. Demon Under Glass. This is a very low budget but well-written story of what happens when a vampire is held in captivity and studied. The writer of the film, Deborah Warner AKA D. L. Warner also wrote a novel with twice the plot length (the movie only tells half of the story). I liked this one so much that I and the writer became friends. I used to write for D. L. Warner. She helped me get published a few times, including a chapter in a text book on the Brontë Sisters. I did a chapter on how they influenced storylines in the 60s Gothic soap Dark Shadows. Sadly Deborah passed away a few years ago. I miss her.
7. The Bride. Released in 1985 this featured Clancy Brown as The Frankenstein monster and Sting as Baron Frankenstein. It was a loose, unofficial, sequel to Universal's Bride of Frankenstein (the actual sequel was Son of Frankenstein, followed by Ghost of Frankenstein, etc...) It feels a lot like a Hammer horror film and this was the first Frankenstein movie I had ever seen with a happy ending for The Creature. It was sweet. 6. Legend of Hell House (1973). Based on the novel Hell House by Richard Matheson, Legend of Hell House tells the story of paranormal investigators in a particularly evil house and theorizing about what is causing the haunting and why. Roddy McDowall plays someone who has previously survived the house. When I first watched this with my friend, Lorie, we both expected Roddy's character to die. I was so sure he'd die that I hoped his death wouldn't be too terrible. Imagine my surprise when his nerdish, passive, sweet character, became the hero of the story. It broke the story trope I was expecting and I was delighted by the positive subversion of my expectations. 5. The Shape of Water. Despite winning four of the biggest Oscar categories, there was a lot of whining afterward of "The movie nobody's even heard of won." And those who only had a vague idea of the plot called it the "Fish f--king movie." Essentially it's The Creature from the Black Lagoon with a mute woman lead character, and a happy ending for The Creature (who is revealed to be an Amazonian River God).
4. Frankenstein (2004 Hallmark TV mini-series). This one is NOT bad at all. it starred Luke Goss as The Creature, Alec Newman as Victor Frankenstein) and has the late Donald Sutherland and Captain Robert Walton. There was a different Frankenstein made in 2004 very loosely based on the Dean Koontz book series but that one was not enjoyable to me. This TV mini-series (which is sometimes sold on DVD as a movie) is the most faithful adaptation of the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley I have ever come across. It would be number 1 of this was my list of favorite Frankenstein movies. 3. Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula. I don't consider this to be a bad movie at all but it's a lesser known movie and it was made for TV and kind of low budget. It is a very respectful retelling of the life story of the historic Prince Vlad III of Wallachia AKA Dracula. But it also implies he becomes the famous vampire after his death. It's good as a historic doc-drama and prequel to the classic horror story. 2. The invitation. (2022) I do NOT consider this a bad movie at all. In fact if I was doing a list of movies involving Dracula that aren't adaptations of the Bram Stoker Story (even loosely) I would probably put this at number one. I love The invitation. A young artist named Evie takes a DNA test and discovers she has family in England. I turns out, however that this family are minion of Count Dracula (going by the name Walter DeVill) and he's looking to replace a bride who killed herself. Try to find the unrated version. The PG-13 cut doesn't make clear that the bride who killed herself decapitated herself. In fact it's easy to mistakenly think she hung herself. 1. Monster Mash. The new asylum Mockbuster for Abigail deserves to be a cult classic. It has the feel of a Universal monster movie and yet it was only made a few months ago. I love this thing. Dracula's daughter is kidnapped by Frankenstein's Monster in an effort to lure Dracula into a trap. It turns out Dr. Frankenstein is dying and wants bits and pieces from all the classic monsters to make him a new, ultra-immortal body. The classic monsters must unite to stop Dr. Frankenstein from becoming a monster far worse than any of them. It's corny and predictable but delightfully fun.

Scooby Doo Episode Idea
The Gang heads to convention celebrating every version of him. Fred liking the stories where Blue Falcon is a man with a brain and few Rubberbands to get the upper hand on his foes, Macgyver style,
Velma liking some of the more Science Technobabble comics because while they may be utter nonsense, they were some of the first comics to really at least make the attempt to explain something with facts and logic and the Blue Falcon in turn being a more logical superhero/ detective.
Of course Shaggy and Scooby are all in, watching all the series from the early wonky 40′s comics, to the Radio Shows, and He-Man esque toy commercials, to the mid 2000s xtreme versions. Every incarnation, you name it, they’ve watched it.
Daphne on the other hand doesn’t really have that same spark when it comes to the franchise. Sure she thinks Dyno Mutt is nice and she can get the appeal of the hero but to her, its a 7/10 franchise that she likes cause her friends like it.
Flash Forward
So the convention hall is haunted by phantom of the opera type guy, Red Cassowary, some deep cut character from one of the lesser known spinoffs when the parent company was hurting for cash so they just leased out Blue Falcon to random movies and projects like how Marvel sold their characters movie rights. Chase ensues, Shaggy and Scooby dress as other lesser known d tier characters of the Blue Falcon canon and Fred gets the idea of a trap via tar and defeathering. As said chase and idea happens however, Daphane stumbles upon ...
it.
The Blue Falcon version that truly resonates with her soul.
Blue Falcon and Dyno-mutt: Soaring Hearts.
Some Foreign Hail Mary like Japanese Live Action Spider-Man. The Acting is Sentai Campy and the plot is less than complex but goddamn it what brings her to love are the faults but also the heart. The costume designers and make up team doing their best with a shoestring budget, monster costumes and sets creatively reused to keep the audience intrigued while not stretching their already thin dollar too far. A flawed Diamond in the Falcon Engraved Rough. The others of course find this odd (Scooby and Shaggy mostly writing off as like a amateurs cake “Earnest but Half-Baked” but the Gang truly appreciate that Daphne found her nerdly niche.
The Villan of the Week turns out to be a Costume Designer that was mad about Work Rates in the Sweatshops of VFX factories and how the good old days of costume design and physical spectacle had been tossed aside for a green screen and acting to the air.
Scooby Dooby Doo.

Everybody knows the iconic Godzilla. But, let’s explore the other campy Japanese Kaiju (Japanese genre of films and TV featuring giant monsters, or Kaiju can also refer to the monsters, themselves.)
We all enjoy a nice B movie monster in the world of tokusatsu, or “special effect filming” in Japanese. The term is short for a genre of live action films bursting with heavy handed special effects, and a slew of freaky, giant creatures.
Godzilla crossed over into the mainstream media and pop-culture of the Western world, but we missed out on the ones that didn’t. That’s Eiji Tsuburaya, a pioneer of special effects, and a master at making kaiju monsters.
Like Dada, a humanoid alien inspired by the post-WWI European art movement, Dada, that also spread to Japan by the 1920s.
Dada made appearances in the 1960s-70s TV show, Ultraman, with a thirst for world domination and a suit evocative of the art movement’s inspiration from African tribal art. He’s gone thru many face changes over the years.
At one time, Tsuburaya was making a new monster a week. Let’s look at some of them. Several are really goofy, like Garamon, here, from the series “Ultra Q.” He emerged from a meteorite and emitted a strange clanking noise when he walked.
Next, is Balloonga, also from “Ultra Q,” that adhered to a rocket on its return from Saturn. It absorbed the rocket's energy, causing it to crash into the sea, then it absorbed Tokyo’s energy leaving in constant darkness.
Alien Varduck from “Return of Ultraman.” That’s “ice breath” shooting out, b/c he’s also know as “Snow Boy.”
Henpai Sentai, the Molester of the Sea.
I feel so stupid, I never knew that Mothra was Godzilla’s wife. This is getting weird, now.
The Shobijin, two tiny priestesses or fairy twins, that speak for Mothra always fascinated me. Talk about weird.
Would you believe that the flower blossom monster from the 1970s-80s Japanese TV show “Gosei Sentai Dairanger,” was the basis for the American Power Rangers? It fired a round of petals when attacked.
Check out this actor in half a Godzilla costume. It was so heavy, it could only be worn for a few minutes at a time.
They even have an action figure.
Behind the scenes shots of tokusatsu monster movies show the delightfully miniature sets such suited monsters trampled.

Movie Night at Avengers Campus (LokixReader)
Summary: A continuation of the series where I write my take on my favorite fanfic clichés.
It's movie night at Avengers campus, and Natasha has picked out a scary movie for you to watch. Horror movies aren't your thing - not when there are real monsters in the world - but being an Avenger means projecting bravery, even during movie night, so you stick around. Luckily, when things get to be too much for you, Loki is there reminding you that not all monsters are worth hiding from, in fact some might be worth venturing into the dark for...
Author's notes: These one-shots are meant to celebrate frequently used story tropes. The intent is to add new stories bi-weekly unless life gets in the way. Please feel free to comment with your favorite fanfic clichés, and I'll add them to the list!
Pairing: Loki (Marvel) x Female Reader
Content Warning: 18+ smut ahead (Reader is of age)
---------------------------------------
"What if this was the thing that lurked in the shadows? Would you still be afraid then?"
Tony Stark had made sure that there were several screening rooms at the Avengers compound. There was the one that was part of the big conference room - it was usually used to show the Avengers footage of how badly you’d messed up, and how the UN was “very, very disappointed in you (but not really, because what could they really do about it)”. Then there was one that was a part of a small conference room, which was usually used by Scott or by Sam trying to show off clips of new tricks to whoever would wander by. And there was the large theater, where Tony imagined the campus would one day hold movie premiers - but was generally used only for press conferences.
Lastly, of course, there was the small theater, where you found yourself that evening. It was where the Avengers would host their own intimate movie nights - a way to wind down and blow off steam between missions or after a hard day of training.
You loved movie nights - it was one of your favorite parts of your new life as an Avenger. Every day you were learning enough novel things to make your head spin and you welcomed every break from the intense work. You thought you’d be used to the onslaught after being there for nearly six months, but being a hero was so much more complicated than you could have imagined. At least movie night made you think of simpler times. It reminded you of sitting on your lumpy sofa back home with family and friends snuggled under blankets. It made you think of sleepover birthdays and midnight movies and awkward first dates. It made you think of normal things.
But there was nothing awkward or lumpy or normal about the little theater. It had three rows of comfortable reclining seats - three deep and in pairs. It could fit eighteen, but there were rarely ever more than six of you. The sizable screen lowered from the ceiling simply by asking, and the projector’s library had access to every movie ever made - all you had to do was tell FRIDAY its name.
Natasha had picked the night's movie you were told, and you were glad. The others had groaned when she’d picked Moonraker, but it was one of the first ways you’d bonded with her - literally Bond-ed - over campy cinema and spy thrillers. However, when you entered the room and saw the movie’s title card already displayed on the screen your stomach sank. It was a horror movie, and not the subtle kind that you could handle. It was an American remake of a Japanese classic. You’d avoided it at all costs when it came out, for fear that it would give you night terrors - waking dreams that would make you lose control of the powers that you didn’t then yet understand.
But you did understand your powers now, at least a little, and as everyone was settling into their seats, your brain failed to come up with a good excuse to leave. It only reminded you that this was an opportunity for growth, and for fostering camaraderie with your new teammates. You hated when your brain did that. You hated when you talked yourself out of being a coward. It was that voice that made you a perfect hero, but damnit, you did not want to be brave in that moment.
“C’mon New Girl, we’re dimming the lights. It’s spooky season, let’s go!” It was impossible to be a coward in front of Natasha. She had an uncanny ability to inspire. So you looked for a seat.
There were several empty seats, and generally, attendees of Movie Night were happy enough to occupy plenty of space by themselves, but you didn’t feel up to it as the images you remembered from the film’s trailer played hauntingly in your mind.
Loki was seated by himself in the back row. You’d built a friendly rapport with him over the months. You were pretty sure he liked that you hadn’t been there to see his mess in the Battle of New York, and you liked liked his dry, witty quips.
“Do you mind?” You asked, pointing at the empty seat beside him, “I’m not great with scary movies.”
“If you don’t like monsters, then you may want to find another seat,” he shot a signature smarmy grin, the kind you’d gotten used to seeing when you bantered with him in the field, but he gestured to the seat beside him all the same, “I do have a request though, he whispered in a low voice now that the music from the film had started to play, “Do you mind sharing that blanket? I forgot my own.”
You had brought a big fluffy throw from your room. The compound was stylish, but not always full of creature comforts, and the cozy softness of your own items made you think of home. It was wild that, after everything extraordinary you’d experienced since becoming an Avenger, you still got homesick now and then, and It was always the little things that ate at you, like blankets on sofas or the familiar smell of coffee in the morning.
You sat down and threw half of the blanket over him, making sure to keep your arms tucked in, not taking up too much room or trespassing on Loki’s personal space when everyone else was so spread out.
The movie progressed, beginning with a creepy, atmospheric prologue, nothing too terrifying, then moved to the optimistic young protagonists without a care in the world. Curse? What curse? They couldn’t be bothered by any old folktale. But of course, alas, they should have heeded all of the warnings, and as the music intensified you could feel the first big scare of the film creeping up on you like a spider on your spine. You dropped your head and brought your blanket up your face to hide there. If you just shut your eyes maybe the horror on the screen wouldn’t plague you later. You tried to disappear into your own understanding of the events transpiring on screen, forcing your imagination to be flooded with the images of harmless behavior set to the eerie, screeching soundtrack.
Suddenly there was a presence at your leg - a touch that made you jump before realizing that it was soft and gentle, warm and reassuring.
Loki gave your knee a little squeeze as the music settled, “it’s over,” he whispered, just barely a breath, and moved from your knee to reach for your hand, still clinging tightly to your covers.
He was intent on watching you, not the movie as you relinquished half of your grip to be held by him. It was a new sort of intimacy for you with a teammate. You’d barely ever hugged a fellow Avenger - your only real physical contact with them was trading blows in the training gym. You hadn’t realized you missed touch so much until now. Another small thing to make you homesick.
Loki was the type of man who took up space. Wherever he stood, wherever he sat, he seemed so spread out, so voluminous, in attitude and in actual stature. But he was tucked completely now under that blanket with you, holding your hand, letting you cling to him, and pulling you in close.
The cadence of the movie settled into its horrific rhythm. A few minutes of plot that you could stand to watch, following the mystery and intrigue unfold, and then a few minutes of horror that you had to hide from. The cycle went on like that, an endless loop, and you inched closer and closer to Loki’s comforting touch. Eventually your face was just as buried in his shoulder as it was buried in your blanket. A little more than halfway through the movie, he had switched the hand that was holding yours, and wrapped you in his free arm entirely.
An Avenger, you knew, should be embarrassed to be curled up like a child because of some silly fiction. Embarrassed because there were real terrors in the world that would make the scariest of movie monsters blanche upon sight. But you couldn’t be bothered to be embarrassed or even move. You felt too safe, too comfortable tucked in Loki’s arm, safe under the eaves of those broad shoulders. If you were homesick before, this felt like home now, and you were happy to be small once again, hidden under a blanket on movie night.
The film was almost over now, and the suspense building up to the big horrific, climactic scene had you burying your face fully into Loki’s chest and his plush black sweater, that smelled clean and of his musk at the same time. He squeezed you tighter, closer with his arm and you let yourself plant there and worm your way into him as you tried to escape from the projected scenes.
Just as the music was about to break, Loki let go of your hand and for an instant you were left feeling clammy and betrayed, until his hand gently connected with your jaw, and he pulled you towards him for a kiss.
His kiss was ginger, delicate and warm. The tension you’d been holding in your neck and shoulders and stomach eased, if only slightly, and for the first time all evening you found yourself genuinely distracted from the images on the screen.
It wasn’t until Steve yelped in fear that you remembered yourself and pulled away. You giggled at the Star Spangled Man’s reaction to the movie along with the rest of the cohort, but you and Loki shared a different kind of smile as he squeezed you once again.
When the movie ended and the lights came back on, Loki released your grip, not moving, but allowing you move away should you choose, and to your almost immediate regret you did, pulling up and out of his embrace to regain some amount of professional distance. You could pretend that you hadn’t just been fully tucked away in Loki’s arms and in his kiss, but a threshold had still been crossed, and you knew you’d have to address it sooner or later. With yourself, at least, if not everyone else.
When you got back to your room you dressed for bed, assuming that you’d done enough to avoid any real lingering images of ghosts and monsters, but when the lights were out, you found it was a different story. The haunting suspenseful music still rang clear in your mind and re-conjured what few scenes you’d absorbed, more horrific now, twisted by your active imagination. Creatures crept in the corners of your bedroom and lurked behind every cabinet or closet door. You pulled your comforter cover up tight, but still felt that the fabric was a measly layer between yourself and what creeping, long fingered creature that your brain invented to lay in wait for you.
But when you tried to banish those images from your brain, all you were left with was the other curious thing that happened that evening. The sensation of Loki’s lips against yours lingered, as did the feel of his warmth and the fresh smell of his sweater. It haunted you as much as the movie did, lingering there in the corners of your mind every time you tried to close your eyes.
The truth was that you weren’t sure what the kiss meant. You had read once that the racing heart and sweaty palms when experiencing terror could be mistaken by your body for feelings of romance. It was why they released almost as many horrors on Valentines Day as they did on Halloween. You also conceived that perhaps it was just a natural progression of your friendship - casual kisses were common around the world, and frankly you had no idea about Asgard.
But then there was the possibility that it was more than friendship - a true gesture of romance, and that’s what scared you the most.
There was so much you’d learned and gotten used to. You felt like you were already a different person entirely from when you’d arrived. You weren’t sure you were ready for any complications that could come from adding intimacy to your life. Much less with a literal god. Much less with a literal god who once tried to conquer the planet. Much less with a literal god who was also a co-worker.
You knew you should banish all thoughts of him until morning, until you had a clearer head, until you could think about the situation more rationally, but when you pushed away your thoughts of Loki, the horrors crept back in. And so, you entered a vicious cycle that barred you from sleep.
There was only one thing to do about it. One person to go to.
Half delirious from exhaustion you got out of bed and found yourself headed for Loki’s room, not even sure that he’d still be up, but you needed company, and comfort, and ideally, a little clarity. You pressed a few light taps on his door with your knuckle, and it only took a moment for you to get your response.
Loki opened his door, shirtless, dressed only in relaxed pajama pants, and hair dripping wet, towel still in hand.
“I wondered if I’d not enjoyed your company for the last time tonight,” he was all cheek and cool calm, and it was a refreshing contrast to your hot, anxious insides.
“I, uhhh… I…,” Now that you were here you had no idea what to do or say
“It’s alright,” he said, reaching out a hand, “I get nightmares too.”
You were pulled into his room, more sparse than you’d have imagined, but littered with books and candlesticks burned to nubs. You sat together at the edge of his bed, unsure of what to say, but glad for the company, glad for the closeness as he began to wordlessly rub your back, slowly, up and down your spine.
“Why… why did you kiss me?” Maybe it was the calm that was beginning to find you now that you had company, or maybe it was the hand on your back that gave you the trust, but the question just came out, forward as could be.
“I wanted you to have something to think about. Something to distract you from the horror on screen. Did it work?”
“Yes…,” Your face burned at the memory, “I’m… sorry I pulled away. I don’t want you to think I’m only interested in you in the dark,” you weren’t sure why, but it felt important that he understand.
“I know,” he said, “It’s a strange thing being here. You have immense power, but also endless scrutiny.”
“Not unlike royalty in that way though, I suppose?”
“No,” he smiled in a sad sort of way, “No, I suppose not.”
It was your turn to kiss his feelings away. You reached out, cupping his cheeks in your palms and returned his soft, comforting kiss. He leaned in and pulled you close and once again your head was clear - free from worry or doubt or questioning.
Loki slipped his fingers just under the hem of your night shirt so that they could rub at the bare skin at the small of your back. It sent another tingle up your spine, a warm one this time, and you leaned in harder, kissing him again with more urgency, chasing the thrill and not running from it. He pulled gently at your leg, left bare by the length of your pajama shorts, and urged you up and over him.
You sat straddled in his lap, hands still at his jaw, too apprehensive, still, of fully touching his bare shoulders and chest. But as your mouths continued to connect and explore, his hands found new terrain under your shirt, reaching higher and higher, lifting the garment up dangerously high, and dangerously close to exposing your own chest. He pressed you closer to him, forcing the bare skin of your bellies to touch and sending goosebumps down your arm.
His kissing slowed, just a little, before he pulled away, slightly, to look you in the eyes.
“I know what you said, about not only being interested in the dark, but the dark keeps things hidden, away from prying eyes. You’re afraid of the that monsters lurk there, but what if it was something beautiful hidden away? Something too nervous to be perceived by others just yet? What if this was the thing that lurked in the shadows? Would you still be afraid then?”
You looked at him, perhaps really seeing him for the first time since arriving. Solid and strong, but also vulnerable and kind. A man full of complexities and anxieties all his own.
“If… If it was just us hiding there. If it was just like this. Then… Then I think I could be very happy living in the dark with you.”
With that Loki was lifting your shirt up and over your shoulders and discarding it to the side. His soft and sweet kisses passionate and deep. He pulled you close, pressing your now bare chest against his. You wrapped your arms around him completely and whimpered as you relinquished all apprehension and melted into his body.
Soon Loki’s fingers were toying with the waistband of your pajama shorts, and then his hands were slipping entirely under the soft fabric and palming the cheeks of your rear. You could feel his arousal growing to its full stature between the fabric left between you. When you couldn’t stand to wait anymore, you gently pried yourself from his lap and stood to take off your shorts. You bent low to draw them to your ankles and discarded them with a little kick before trying to return to your efforts.
Loki stopped you, however, with his hands on your hips, and after taking a moment to drink in the sight of you, he stood as well. He let you watch him remove his own pants, leaving nothing between your flesh besides the temperature-controlled air. He winked at you and you took the full sight of him in for the first time. You’d seen what his body could do before - you’d seen his strength on missions and in training, but seeing the form of it, lean muscles held taught along his elongated torso and legs - it almost took your breath away. With all the grace of a panther he plodded to the controls for the lamps in the room and switched them off leaving you with only the subtle glow of minor appliances and moonlight spilling through the window.
“Now,” he said in an almost purr, making his way back to you and the bed, pulling back its covers, “Let’s make the darkness our domain.”
You slid in between his sheets and he followed, pressing himself close to you once more. You felt as if you never wanted to let go ever again. Your hands explored the muscles that rippled along his back, and his tongue discovered the sensitive skin on your neck and chest.
There was a time in your life when you’d insisted on languorously slow foreplay, when you’d required complete control in the bedroom in order to keep your powers at bay. But you let Loki’s touch wash over you like the darkness, and when he was lifting your leg up over his so that he could push himself deep into your body, it felt natural to accept him and let yourself sink into his sheets.
He held your hand out and pressed into the mattress beside you, like your junction was a waltz, half wrapped around each other and movements combined. Every thrust of his hips was one more edict to banish your fears. Every hot breath against your skin was a salve to soothe away your worry. Every kiss was a life saving breath to bring you into this new world with him.
Loki pushed your legs higher, opening your body up to him completely. He caught your gaze and held it, continuing to thrust, connecting with you through your eyes and through your hips. The sensation built closer and closer to its apex with you staring into one another. It was only when the wave of pleasure crested, like a spray of ecstasy washing through you, that you closed your eyes to brace against euphoria. Loki soon followed, feeling your rapture beneath him. He pressed in even closer, slowing but not stopping until your bodies had softened and he had spent his all.
Loki pulled the covers up and over your heads, shielding you from even the moonbeams, and you lay there for a long while, entwined in the warmth of each other, catching your breaths.
When the rhythm of your inhales and exhales began to slow into slumber you heard Loki whisper, “And you can sleep now? With a monster in your bed?”
“Loki, if you’re a monster, then I’m a monster too, and I know I can learn to love the dark,” and you meant it too, with all of your bravery returning there in the pitch black, “It’s a wonder I was ever afraid of it in the first place.”
He kissed your forehead then, and rubbed your back, and tucked in there, between Loki’s strong arms, in the inky dark of his covers, you felt secure, you felt protected, and so you settled into your most restful night of sleep.

TMNT Genderbend Names
I need help again but it’s actually, like... important??? For fic, anyway.
So I’m tagging my tmnt pals. @crow-dog-blogs @leonsi @this-world-of-beautiful-monsters @brightlotusmoon @neromia
This’ll be... not long-long but lots of lines so I’ll put under a cut. I need help with names. Please. O~O
So I’m doing a genderbend oneshot, but I wanna use the same names for the characters throughout my genderbend stuff--which will include my Comparisons AU whenever I get around to revamping that thing. I have some ideas, but I want second opinions, especially ‘cause like, half of you guys read my stuff now and... I just would really like your input, please.
So, I’ll start with the main cast in this post, or at least the ones I’m worried about Right Now, and then tomorrow I’ll reblog with minor characters/villains that won’t be of much importance (at least for a while). I’ll color-coding and role-related nicknames, or actually titles for canon characters.
So for our Fearless Blue One, I think I’ll definitely hope on the Lavinia bandwagon. I mean, the woman was a fucking overachiever in the best way--she was the first female artist to rely solely on her commission money and she was known throughout western Europe, not just in Italy. Also, she was the first woman artist to paint/draw female nudes??? And she had a househusband with children? Renaissance Icon much? Plus, there’s the added benefit of Simple Nicknames and keeping the initials; Fearless Leader Lavinia, Nia, Vin, Vinny--lots of choices!
Next the Feisty Ball of Flames, our darling Red Turtle. I was thinking Sofonisba, who is also an icon and not-coincidentally my favorite artist of all time. She was taught by Bernardino Campi, which was kind of a big deal at the time, and was internationally recognized as a fucking fantastic artist. She worked in the Spanish Royal Court--she was an Italian woman and worked for the Spanish royals. Her paintings are stunning and remarkably realistic for the time period--she was so good that Michelangelo gave her props. That kind of badassery is befitting our sewer-dwelling brawler. However, nicknames were a bit tricky for me. I decided that Sof (pronounced like the beginning of Sophie) would probably be her regular nickname and Sofie would be her Special Cute Nickname.
For the turtley genius, I’m thinking Giovanna. Giovanna Garzoni was a still-life painter and portraitist. Her work is very good and her paintings are remarkably realistic. She was considered so good at what she did, that she could, reportedly, ask any price for her paintings. For some time, her primary clients were the Medici Family. She also attended the Accademia di San Luca, where she followed events and discussion aimed at educating, socializing, and professionalizing painters, architects and sculptors of Rome. Nicknames are pretty easy, too: Vanna, Van, Gio (pronounced Vawn-ah, Vawn, and Jo(e), respectively). Vanna and Van sound a bit like Donnie and Don, too, so that’s cute.
Last turtle-sib: Artemisia. Artemisia Lomi, or Artemisia Gentileschi, among the most accomplished seventeenth-century artists, initially working in the style of Caravaggio. She was producing professional work by the age of fifteen, and was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. She had an international clientele. She did a lot of darker works with bright lighting and vivid colors, which reminds a lot of the Prankster--bright and cheery at first glance but a little darker in reality. Also, the nicknames Art and Arty follow a similar vein of Mike and Mikey.
For Splinter’s eldest child, I was thinking Mitsuaki, which is a Japanese name meaning “light, luminence.” It keeps the M initial of Miwa and keeps the fluffy meaning (Miwa means something like “beautiful” or “peaceful”--it might’ve been “beautiful peace,” I don’t remember off the top of my head). Of course, the Shredder will rename this child, which I don’t think Shred-head is very good at naming babies (he named Karai “spicy,” after all), so I think he’d probably go with something like Kohaku, which translates roughly to “amber”--the color of the kid’s eyes. Pretty obvious, but I thought it would be funny, and I like shitting on Shredder. Have a little gag about Shredder being so uncreative that they would immediately name their only kid after their eye color...
Speaking of, I’m keeping the name Saki, since it’s unisex; so is Yoshi, so I’m keeping that, too. Titles are still Shredder and Splinter.
August is the redhead, of course, and Casey is unisex so it stays.
I’m not worried about anybody else’s names right now, since they’re not relevent to what I’m working on. But, yeah, please give me the feedback. I’m having a bit of a dilemma and I usually spend, like, weeks on names, so...

ooooo uh top 5 video games
OOOH MY GODDD
5. tie between inscryption (<- your fault) and undertale/deltarune. i just love metafiction so so much. metafiction is an instant nerdsnipe
4. breath of the wild, which walked so that genshin impact could run and also steal peoples wallets as it sprints past. botw is beautiful and also was the first open worldish game that i could make progress in without getting bored immediately. i love to just open the game and wander around and experience the world.
3. ghost trick. an utterly charming game about the ghost of a man trying to solve his own murder while uncovering a huge plot and saving and befriending strangers along the way. it was written by ace attorneys shu takumi and you can really tell because it has the same bonkers level of complexity and hard earned heart warming moments. i replay this one whenever i need a little more faith in humanity and also want to see a funny guy unmurder people. marn you should absolutely play this one it has hitmen AND time loops AND ghosts.
2. WITCHS HEART MY BELOVED. god where do i even start with this one. its a japanese rpgmaker horror game. its a reverse harem shoujo anime. its a psychologcal thriller. its got the prettiest colors ive ever seen. its an examination of the different ways trauma can affect people and of what happens when you trap those people in a house with demons for five days (the demons are also traumatized). the demons mostly look like monsters except for the most powerful ones filled with the most hatred for humanity, those ones look like girls wearing lolita fashion. the protagonist is a girl with a heart of gold, a head of empty, and legs of steel. shes so dumb but she never skips leg day the other characters need weapons to fight monsters she just kicks them. it also has time loops as well as my favorite poor little meow meow of all time. its going to have four endings but only one of them has been released so far but its so satisfying so i know at least one of the others is going to hurt me. its over 19 hours long according to how long to beat but that hasnt stopped me form playing through it two and a half times. its got so many unintended glitches. its about what people are willing to do in order to grant their deepest wish and how granting that wish doesnt necessarily heal the damage thats been done. there is a cooking minigame. the guy who owns the house makes you do chores. there is gratuitous violence. there is a fishing minigame.
1. borderlands 2 i will never be over borderlands 2. borderlands is what happens happens when the AAA game studio doesnt realize that they hired queer dudes as the head writers on the first two titles in their big fps shoot em up game series. its so bright and colorful and silly and campy in the face of so many of the grizzled marine fps games of the era and i felt at home immediately, its where i learned to play fps games because it was the first fps i felt truly excited to play. every queer kid has one or two pieces of media that kept them company when they needed it and helped them figure things out, and this was one of mine. perhaps i am being a tad sappy but bl2 made such a difference in my life im not even joking. that being said, theres also a mission where you hunt down four rat guys in a sewer who are very blatantly the teenage mutant ninja turtles but as rats and theres another where you meet a guy named “Shooty McFace” and you have to shoot him in the face. it also briefly renames one of the common enemy types “Bonerfarts.” theres a shotgun that shoots swords that explode into smaller swords. so like. grain of salt and all that.
#SunnySpeaks#charaznablescanontoyota#okay im actually going to continue to be sappy about it in the tags#maya the siren is the only aro and/or ace playable character in a AAA video game ive ever heard of#and like it was 2012 so they couldnt give us much about it#BUT ALSO IT WAS 2012 AND SHE STILL EXISTED#genuinely dont think i would have figured out i was ace as quickly as i did without her because i didnt know it existed before i played it#also they made their one (1) grizzled space marine bi on accident#because he has a line to fail at flirting w maya when he revives her in co-op#but they forgot to code it to tell the difference between characters#and when people pointed it out instead of fixing it they were like welp guess hes bi now#and then doubled down on it in the dlc which is SO funny#i love borderlands love that big colorful nightmare hell planet

Godzilla (1954)
I grew up on Godzilla, so I was excited to watch it again for this class but with more attention to the details rather than just vibing to a crazy monster.
Atomic Bomb Commentary
The movie coming out in 1954 and being about an irradiated monster makes the political commentary on nuclear testing and warfare a bit obvious. Despite it being a bit in your face, the way in which this film attacked the issue head on, having Godzilla become the embodiment and physical representation of the destruction of the atomic bomb and its subsequent radiation was beautifully handled. The film starts with Godzilla attacking a fisherman boat, which is reminiscent of the illnesses imposed upon some Japanese fishermen who worked near the Bikini Atoll (where the Americans tested atomic bombs). So even from the very beginning Honda paid attention to small details to showcase the ways in which Godzilla reflected the pain and destruction of the Atomic Bomb itself.
Godzilla himself was a dinosaur who survived from the Jurassic period, managing to live through the asteroid (essentially a large bomb). In a way Godzilla was an innocent victim that was later exposed to radiation and experiments at the hands of humans. It may be a reach but that seems to somewhat echo the innocent people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the survivors who were subjected to the horror of the radiation and were subject to study of its effects.
The Use of Sound and Music in the Film
The score did a really good job at setting the tone for me. Specifically, after Godzilla’s first attack there is a haunting scene where children are singing inside of a temple and the camera then shifts to show the ruins left in the monster’s wake. The scene is played very slowly and allows for the mourning and grief to really be felt. The eerie music choice in combination with the slow pan really lets the emotion sink in for me.
Additionally, the footsteps that Godzilla makes sound like bombs dropping. Which works well as personifying the atomic bomb within the character of Godzilla itself.
Overall:
I think this film was important to the Japanese people at the time of its release when the pain and effects of the bombings were still fresh. It was honestly refreshing to see a movie that in a way held the US accountable for its actions. I do have some issues with the plot being a bit…campy. But I think that comes with the time and graphics available. The film addressed a controversial and sensitive topic in a meaningful way that allowed the audience to confront aspects of their trauma safely which I really find touching. I remember reading an article in another class about the characteristics of monsters and that one of them is the universality of them. Godzilla was a monster to personify a tragic event, but the beauty in him is that he can be reused and recycled in the forms of other monsters to fit with the tragedies of new generations. In a way, I think monsters can be comforting.
