Note
I'm from the USA and am trying to take hope and inspiration from our queer predecessors who faced dark times in the past. How did they keep going even when it felt like the world was ending?Do you have any recommendations for queer historical essays, poems, books, anything to find comfort and hope for these dark times?
Yes, I have a couple of stories for this.
Claude Cahun
A queer surrealist photographer from 1920's paris, Claude was Jewish and recognized the rise of antisemitism in their home country and watched it become fascism. Here is a quote from their article:
"In 1937 Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore cut off many connections because of the war and ran to Jersey to avoid anti-Semitic violence. Upon arrival, they went back to using their birth names and laid low until the Germans took Jersey. Moore and Cahun set to work. They used their experience with art and disguising their genders to create works that spread misinformation, seeds of rebellion and implied that there was a large-scale resistance happening when in reality, it was just the two of them. Though some of their work was based on confusing the soldiers, they also translated and transcribed BBC transmissions into German, detailing the war crimes that were being committed. They would have these translations on pieces of paper that they would slip into soldier's pockets, matchboxes, and anywhere a soldier may stumble across it and possibly read it. An investigation was started, and Nazi authorities believed there to be a group of people doing this. When the two were discovered to be behind the actions, Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore were sentenced to death. Fortunately, the sentence was never carried out because the island of Jersey was liberated from German rule only a year later. Claude took a picture upon their release in front of the camps with a Nazi eagle pin between their teeth."
And Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz
who wrote:
"Poetry readings and concert attendance—and often a chat over vodka—were not only forms
of escapism, but also a search for better, more substantive aspects of human beings, a search
which would end, more often than not, in complete disillusionment. If it could be possible, to
discern, in these notes even if only for a moment a measure of humanity in that time of
inhumanity, the goal of this publication would be fulfilled.”
I think his whole article is worth reading.
Also here are some books to read:
Your Art Will Save Your Life
Beth Pickens
Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies
Ben MacIntyre
Nepantla: An Anthology Dedicated to Queer Poets of Color

Where will Brandon Aiyuk end up?
Over the course of the past few days it sure seemed like the 49ers were going to send Brandon Aiyuk to greener pastures as there are tough decisions ahead for the team. It got as far as learning that the Patriots and Browns had frameworks for trades in place for the star wide receiver. The added element to this whole story is that the team trading for Aiyuk needs to give him a new contract, one worthy of top tier talent at the position. His contract and love for a certain head coach is where this story has gotten very interesting...
Here's where the involved teams seem to stand at this point in their pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk:
Pittsburgh Steelers - The latest team to join the fray have something going for them, Aiyuk wants to play there. Aiyuk respects Mike Tomlin, wants to play for him and as some have pointed out looks a little like coach Tomlin. The problem is, the Steelers don't necessarily have a trade package that the 49ers want. The Steelers will have to blow the 49ers away with picks as they only have Pickens to offer and never would.
Cleveland Browns - The Browns had a trade in place with the 49ers as reported just a couple of days ago. They have a wide receiver that seemingly the 49ers would want in Amari Cooper who is a very talented player, expendable with the addition of Jerry Jeudy in Cleveland. The problem is, they can't work out a deal with Aiyuk because he reportedly doesn't want to play there.
New England Patriots - The Patriots like the Browns had a trade in place with the 49ers, they have pursued Aiyuk before as well. The Patriots were willing to send Kendrick Bourne back in a trade package, Bourne would have returned to the team that drafted him. The problem is, Brandon Aiyuk doesn't want to play there despite the Patriots willing to pay him as a top 5 receiver in the game. The Patriots have reportedly moved on from Aiyuk.
The Conclusion, it sure seems like Brandon Aiyuk has pinned the 49ers into a corner where they have to make an interesting decision. They could take a potentially lesser deal from the Steelers just to get the distraction of the Aiyuk contract situation out of their building or find a way to get more out of the Steelers and make everyone happy...maybe. My conspiracy thought is that this whole thing was nothing but the Aiyuk camp trying to drive up the cost from the 49ers and he ends up with a new deal to stay with the 49ers, just saying.

A Golden Boy…a TRUE American Hero.
Adam McKay’s DEATH ON THE LOT podcast, episode 3 features John Garfield unjust framing by HUAC.
The guests on the podcast are ALL the people I would have selected to interview: daughter, actor and artist, Julie Garfield; authors, Robert Nott and Isaac Butler, and also a surprise—actor, Lee Grant one of the few remaining to be blacklisted in Hollywood in the 50’s. Excellent commentary by all. Good on you, Adam McKay and team!
The Red-Baiting of a Golden Boy | Episode 3 | A new generation of actors questioned the status quo; a rattled establishment fought back; dire consequences ensued. We’re talking John Garfield, Hollywood’s first method actor. LISTEN
"When I was originally requested to appear before the committee, I said that I would answer all questions, fully and without any reservations, and that is what I have done. I have nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to hide. My life is an open book. I was glad to appear before you and talk with you. I am no Red. I am no pink. I am no fellow traveler. I am a Democrat by politics, a liberal by inclination, and a loyal citizen of this country by every act of my life.”
—John Garfield’s statement before House Un-American Activites Committee (HUAC) on April 23, 1951.
All Julie wanted to do was what he did best: ACT. They took everything away from him. Despite that, he held his street cred. He gave away not a single name during his testimony. No ratting on friends and associates from Julie. Badass.
The others involved: Shameful. Shocking that Julie’s life and livelihood could be toyed with so heartlessly and carelessly. This was a man who did so much for his country. How could the ruthless, power hungry politicians ignore these examples of John Garfield’s patriotism?
During WWII, he cofounded—after bringing the suggestion to Bette Davis—the Hollywood Canteen. The Canteen operated from October 3, 1942 through November 22, 1945 (Thanksgiving Day), as a club offering free of charge: food, dancing and entertainment for service personnel usually on their way overseas. Nearly four million people were served as they were serving us!
The Hollywood Victory Caravan included Eddie Dowling, President of Camp Shows, Ray Bolger, Mitzi Mayfair, Louis Polanski, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Jane Pickens, Benay Venuta, and John Garfield serving as master of ceremonies. One of the first USO tours, Flying Showboat revue toured U.S. military bases in the Caribbean. These celebrities performed under some extremely trying conditions, as the weather was brutally hot and many of the camps were not equipped to host theatrical performances. The show must go on (!) and it did.
Julie running an event at the Canteen.
Julie entertains the troops! Audience members at the Canteen filled the hall.
Here he is selling War Bonds to support WWII efforts with Humphrey Bogart in 1943. Not sure who is pictured with them.
Julie championed the story of real life marine hero, Al Schmid bringing it to the screen in PRIDE OF THE MARINES. He read about the hero in LIFE magazine and brought the idea for a film to the studio. He stayed with Sargent Schmid and his wife for a couple weeks to portray the man respectfully and honesty.

Some big Sabrina horror news today, starting off with Madam Satan featuring in "The Cursed Library: Alpha" miniseries releasing between August to October! (Images and details from ArchieComics.com) Sabrina and Salem feature in sone of the covers!
Dark worlds converge in August when Archie Comics opens the doors to THE CURSED LIBRARY, an all-new premium-printed limited series that unites Archie’s three main horror heroines — and its various one-shot comics — in one explosive storyline by writers Magdalene Visaggio (ETERNITY GIRL) and Eliot Rahal (BLEED THEM DRY) with art by Craig Cermak (RED TEAM).
“The CURSED LIBRARY event that Mags and I have been asked to helm is unlike any other moment in Archie Comics history,” Rahal said. “It’s both a throughline and nexus point that weaves together everything in the Archie Horror universe that’s happened so far. Its goal is to provide shape to the world that has been created. THE CURSED LIBRARY is essentially saying: ‘All of this matters. There is a fabric.’”
Archie Horror readers have been treated to a series of standalone one-shot comics in recent years that can be enjoyed as chilling ghost stories and campfire tales, but eagle-eyed fans will have noticed hints of connection, which came to a head in last fall’s MADAM SATAN: HELL ON EARTH. That story ended with Madam Satan, the escaped Queen of Hell, captured by Jinx Holliday, a teenager interested in magic and rock ‘n’ roll who is rumored to be Satan’s daughter. Jinx is often aided by her loyal best friend Danni, who made global headlines last summer when she was revealed to be Archie’s first transgender character. While all three protagonists have charted their own course thus far, their worlds collide in THE CURSED LIBRARY when each will be tested as Danni descends into the depths of Hell to save her friend’s soul — and the world.
“This is an ambitious project led by two of the best writers we’ve had the pleasure of working with on our horror titles, and, honestly, two of the best writers in comics, period,” said Archie Comics Senior Director of Editorial Jamie L. Rotante. “I have the ultimate trust in them to craft a story that is layered, poignant, and still metal AF. This feels like the culmination of almost everything I’ve personally worked on as an editor, and I’m thrilled that I get to watch Eliot and Mags create a world (or rather, convergence of worlds) that I’m, frankly, in awe of. This is not just a love letter to our fans, but to the art of storytelling as a whole, complemented by the stunning artwork of Craig Cermak.”
Cermak has made a big impact on the Archie Horror line, having illustrated Jinx’s horror adventures and the initial appearances of The Cursed Library itself, a mysterious collection of books that seem to chronicle the events depicted in recent one-shot comics like CAMP PICKENS and BETTY: THE FINAL GIRL. “It’s been exciting to go on this journey with Jinx and see it develop into something much grander,” Cermak said. “Building on top of all the various horror tales featuring so many great Archie characters is providing such a gratifying opportunity as an artist, with so much great material from which to pull.”
Reiko Murakami
Rahal has written all of Madam Satan’s modern adventures, relating the anti-hero’s struggle against Satan and her efforts to chart her own destiny. Madam Satan is one of Archie Comics’ oldest characters, debuting in PEP COMICS #16 in 1941. She was reintroduced as Sabrina’s antagonist in the horror series CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA, which was adapted as a Netflix streaming series in 2018. Visaggio is the architect of Jinx’s modern resurgence, where she is an older and more macabre version of the classic Archie humor character known as Li’l Jinx, who first appeared in PEP COMICS #62 in 1947. Visaggio scripted Danni’s return alongside Jinx and her solo star turn in last year’s STRANGE SCIENCE one-shot. Danni first appeared in DILTON’S STRANGE SCIENCE in 1989 as an equally brilliant friend and foil to Dilton, Riverdale’s resident genius. The talents of, and more importantly, the bonds between all three women will be the focus of THE CURSED LIBRARY.
“I think what I love and am most proud of is that this connectivity is secondary to the story,” Rahal added. “THE CURSED LIBRARY can stand alone because, at its heart, this is the culmination of two stories: Madam Satan’s and Jinx’s. These two characters have had painful journeys of self-discovery and are finally meeting their climax –– but it’s all wrapped up in the Apocalypse. It’s both the end and a new beginning. And by the time we’ve closed the chapter on the Cursed Library, the Archie Horror line will be diving into a very new and exciting future.”
THE CURSED LIBRARY: ALPHA releases August 21 in comic shops nationwide, with colors by Matt Herms, lettering by Jack Morelli, and open-to-order variant covers by Robert Hack, Soo Lee, and Reiko Murakami. It will be available for pre-order on May 24. The first issue will be followed by OMEGA in September and the final chapter, UNBOUND, in October.
The Cursed Library: Alpha
This is it… this is the moment our horror one-shots have led to… THE CURSED LIBRARY! When we last left off in MADAM SATAN: HELL ON EARTH, Jinx has the former Queen of the Underworld trapped in the mysterious library, as her father-bestowed demon powers have intensified. To stop Jinx from becoming like her father, her best friend Danni Malloy must rescue and convince Madam Satan to guide her through Hell itself to find the one thing that can possibly save her friend’s soul––Jinx’s mom. Along the way, they’ll also discover a number of faces they’ve seen before, though only in the pages of the terrifying tomes within the cursed library. This three-issue limited series horror event tells a story about the bonds that tie us together and how the only thing that can save the world from evil is radical love. It’s Riverdale’s Return of the Jedi meets Dante’s Inferno. A three-part event that will close the door on the Cursed Library and usher in a whole new chapter of horror stories.

Theory time! Bc I'm sleep-deprived and slightly tipsy (Also shout-out to my roommate who has heard most of these as rants via DM)
(For future reference, this was written after S7e11)
Spoilers Abound, most of these are barely believable, but like Riverdale, just enjoy the camp/ the potential.
The Rocky Horror song is foreshadowing that the memories are coming back – it's the first time they've really actively (as far as I remember) broken the 50s illusion, Veronica is absolutely the type to have watched RHPS, and if not her, defo Kevin.
The Milkman is Lou Cipher/the devil (Why? Idk, you tell me)
The Tabitha that came back in episode 9 is present-day Tabitha, and 50s Tabitha is still on tour with her parents. I don't really have any evidence for this other then it's pretty far into the season for none of that plotline to have appeared and I think it would be a fun plot twist
The reason Jughead kept his memories initially (speaking of, I have a whole rant about why erasing his memories episode 1 was an awful decision on the writer's part, I may post that at some point, lmk.) was because Tabitha subconsciously wanted him to remember her.
They're actually all dead in S7, and the 50s illusion is just purgatory. Tabitha is working behind the scenes to try and bring them back to life– if you 'die' in purgatory you can't be brought back, hence the milkman storyline I guess? Possibly an agent of Pickens. Tabitha erased Jughead's memories so people wouldn't panic and thus increase the likelihood of someone getting hurt. Hence why Julian Blossom is alive. My only evidence for this tbh is that when all the 'first-borns' and Jughead dies the afterlife thingy was also 50s themed. (Update: checked the scene in e1, Jughead even questions if this is the afterlife, and Tabitha denies it, saying that she had a plan-B, which was this. So she could either be lying, or as it is purgatory, telling the truth, as this is not 'The sweet hereafter')
