SGA/SG1 fic: Three Days in the Valley (Cam/Vala/John, T-rated, 4800 words)

Summary: Cam never thought he'd be here, out on the sand and scrub. His family had wanted a farm, to grow fields of dark green and golden yellow, the soft brush of leaves audible in the early morning, underneath the drone of insects. They'd tried for it, they really had, but here he is, on horseback, no fields in sight. (AKA Vala and Cam herd cattle, western AU)

Set somewhere in a Stargate Atlantis Season 4 alternate universe, Daniel ends up on Atlantis under Sam's leadership. We get some pretty typical Daniel stuff, but there are also some surprises. We get to see a depth of Sam's character not previously seen. Jack's influence on them both becomes more and more obvious as time goes on. With the help of Pegasus flora and, maybe even a nudge from Atlantis herself, Sam and Daniel find that maybe being more than friends isn't a terrible thing at all.

  Note: There is absolutely no non-con/dub-con in this piece. That's the sex pollen twist.

There's a very fun longfic on AO3 that does both of these, having Aeryn and Vala swap places (and John and Cam, in a setting that goes with the Cam/Vala ship). I'm one of those folks that really does prefer Daniel/Vala, but it's a fun read, and I'll go ahead and drop a link.

It's unfinished but there's lots of combinations of all four characters ending up in one or the other universe being explored over almost 150k words. @shiggityontherocks is the amazing author of a lot of other fics too, especially if you're partial to Cam/Vala.

The poll does make me ponder things though. I think the results are right, Aeryn would make an amazing SG-1 soldier even if she doesn't have the curiosity or wonder to appreciate all the worlds and cultures. Vala would just be another troublemaker on Moya and they really don't need another person constantly getting them screwed.

But my shipping soul is more interested in whether Aeryn/Cam and John/Vala might work even better than the originals. Probably not.

I think John would get tired of being the more stable straight man of the relationship, and impatient with Vala's obvious need for therapy and constant lies. But it is kinda like crossing Aeryn with Chiana without any of the "looks too alien" and "probably too young for me" barriers. If it was before they'd declared their love or in a setting where he and Aeryn never even got close, John would probably be unable to resist Vala in lingerie in his bed telling him a good story about why they should frell. Then he'd fall for her because that man is made for commitment and she'd panic worse than Aeryn and frell Crais or something. It would be drama all the way.

And Cam might find Aeryn hot AF, but not have the necessary softness and vulnerability to get Aeryn to open up. She might think he's comfortingly familiar, and not be able to resist some recreation in a fit of loneliness, but unless the swap happens before Season 3, she might be too hung up on John to accept a solemn, older, less emotionally open substitute. Cam would definitely want to resist temptation because she's on his team and that's fraternizing even if it's not technically true. But one bad mission where everyone needs some comfort and they're going to be making out in an elevator on the way to hell with the rest of their good intentions. And then once they sleep together, Cam is going to be beating himself up about it, and Aeryn's going to quietly freak out, and then mistake his reticence for actual proper Peacekeeper non-attachment and they're going to have infrequent but explosive sex until Cam breaks down and tries to talk about his feelings and it all blows up. Imagine the module make out scene but with a much older John and a much colder Aeryn. Could get violent, definitely going to get shouty, and again, drama all the way.

Okay, wait, I think I've convinced myself this would be fun. Either combo, it does intrigue me. I'm just not sure I'm the person to explore it. If anyone is ever looking for AU/crossover ideas to write about, I would LOVE to read something believable that remixed either of the couples.

I’ve recently developed an interest in making K-pop style top loaders. Don’t ask why, it’s not important. The important thing is I have every intention of making top loaders for Stargate characters. If you don’t know what they are here is a reference for what I’m talking about

Anyway here’s what I’m think for when I get my photo cards printed. This is basically for my reference but whatever I’ll hit post who even cares anymore.

Jack: green themed, lots of space stickers. I think I have a telescope sticker that I can put in the corner.

Sam: HEAVY SPACE IMAGERY!!!! Constellation washi tape as a boarder, blue theming. Maybe some computer stuff too?? Idk I have so many visions for Sam that I may have to make a few

Daniel: gold and blue theming, lots of hearts. I don’t think I will be able to find any ancient Egypt stickers but I will put my ass into finding them if they exist. I had a set as a kid idk where they went tho.

Teal’c: gold and silver theming, may even do his forehead symbol with some glue and glitter?? Lots and lots of hearts.

General Hammond: baby blue and dark blue theming, gold stars along the border. Idk I don’t have a super strong vision for his yet but I will know when I go to make it. Top loaders are made with the heart more than the brain.

Jonas: SO MANY CUTE LITTLW ANIMALS ALL AROUND HIM AND HEARTS!!!!!! His will be maximalist and inspired by childlike joy and wonder. No colour palette yet all I have are vibes and excitement. Oh yes and dinosaur imagery for sure. I may have to make a few for him because I love him too much to only make one.

Vala: Black and pink, chain imagery and lots of Sanrio stickers. I also like the idea of incorporating a mcbling style with some chunky rhinestones

Cam: no solid ideas yet please let me know.

John: pink and orange theming and I will not be taking ANY criticism on this decision. I’m thinking making a heart shape, half orange, half pink as a frame and then using minimal stickers but they will be football themed.

Rodney: CANADA MENTION AHHHHHH anyway yeah I’m gonna make it Canada themed because I think he would hate it. Strong beaver and maple syrup imagery. I will be using a picture of him looking exasperated with his arms crossed.

Ford: HEARTS AND HEARTS AND HEARTS!!!!! I love him so much and his top loader WILL be showing that. I wanna make it mint and lavender with a bunch of hearts and flowers because I love him and I would die for him.

How I feel about this character

I love his messy hair, his messy emotions he doesn't want to talk about, his messy relationships, his complicated relationship to his job and the military as a whole, and how much he loves his team. He has so many issues, and I want to explore them all.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

So many. I want him with everyone. My SGA shipping journey started with John/Elizabeth/Rodney, then I fell down the McShep rabbit hole (I love it here), but I'm also very down for John/Rodney/Teyla/Ronon and John/Rodney/Jennifer. I absolutely adore John/Parrish because of a fantastic conversation with Anagrrl that resulted in this amazing fic. I'm also down for John/Cam, John/Evan, John/Evan/Cam, John/Ronon, and more. I'm not sure there's a romantic ship out there with him that I wouldn't at least consider.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

John/Vala. I love them as friends. They barely interact in the show, but John and Vala would get along like a house on fire. And I love them having casual sex and being friends but not being romantically interested in each other.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I don't think I have any truly unpopular opinions about John. I'm pretty flexible about him because I think he can fit a truly astonishing number of headcanons.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Honestly, I'm kind of okay with canon because it gave us room to mess around. Part of me wishes John had come out as some kind of queer, but that wasn't going to happen for so many reasons, and I'm actually very okay with it not happening because it leaves us with enough wiggle room to make him whatever we want. I guess I wish we'd gotten more AU versions of him. We had a lot in the Daedalus Variations, but they were all military, and it would've been fun to see some non-military or non-Stargate versions of him.

I don't like season 9 of sg1 and I feel like the ori aren't plot necessary

I understand why o'neill disappeared to DC, rda quit to be a dad and I absolutely respect that and love that for him. cam Mitchell is a little obnoxious, but I can live with him and he has a complex backstory. and Sam x jack is VERY heavily implied and I love that for them.

I just really don't like the Ori. it doesn't feel like the natural progression of the series, and it seems like they just wanted to replace the goa'uld instead of exploring how the galaxy is dealing with their [goa'uld] defeat. all-powerful, worship-fuelled zealot Ancients? ehhhh not feeling it. I'm still watching the last two seasons, but between this and the oddly excessive amounts of recap episodes I'm standing firm with my "atlantis is my favourite" stance.

I almost wish I could un-watch the handful of season 9 episodes, and you can tell that they wanted to and really should've ended at s7 or 8 (I do like the defeat of anubis, and the character development of the sg1 team in s8, so we could keep that one). the one thing I did like was the Vala arc, she was ✨️fun✨️ and her interactions with Daniel were hilarious. she couldn't be trusted to tell you earth only has one moon, but she was fun about it. but the addition of the ori and this new name for the Ancients/Lanteans/"Altreans", it's just confusing.

if anyone disagrees, please reblog/reply I'd gladly hear your take on this. my mum, who I watch stargate with, think that it's the "natural opposite to the Ancients", that theyre "too perfect and science-driven", and there had to be this religious side to them because that's how it is for humans. I disagree. I think that the Ancients are far from perfect, that half of the stuff that sgc crews go through are because of the Ancients' mess-ups, and Oma and that one lady in atlantis that john was with who think that they should be allowed to help humans are enough opposition.

Stargate Spy AU

The SGC (Stargate Galaxy Command) was formed in 1945 upon the successful return of Ernest Littlefield from P3X-972 in 1945. Their mission was to gather intelligence from the galaxy, as well as any help they could get with technology. They succeeded and by 1970, Earth was at the same technology level as it is today in 2023. By 2023 it is advanced beyond that, but most of the world still doesn't know aliens exist, even though a fair number of human-aliens live among them happily. (Teal'c is making a killing as a audiobook reader)

The current head of the SGC is Dr. Samantha Carter who has a dual PhD in Astrophysics and engineering. Her second in command is Dr. Rodney McKay who has the same degrees. They met in college and sparks flew. Of all sorts as they decided to build a plane for fun one day and made friends with the local machinist. (there was one night okay? they don't like to talk about it). Daniel Jackson, Littlefield and Catherine's protege) would be in command but they keep losing him to different planets for a few months so it never worked out. (Cam and Vala make sure he's safe.)

They have a close working partnership with many different nations at this point and so have international staffing. Ostensibly this is known as Cross Border Training or CBT and has ended up helping with the lessening of tensions around the world. (the politicians took credit but everyone knows the marriage of Evan Lorne to Radek Zelenka started this road).

The current President for the US, Jack O'Neill, along with his running mate Elizabeth Weir, are both big fans of the SGC, as well as the CBT and so they're working on drawing up plans to try and make sure there is no funding issues going forward. Declaration of Independence for the Command Kids as Jack calls it. Or DICK. (Yes, Elizabeth is aware of this, but the name will change like most of their other names have. The worlds a better place but she can get a lot more done behind the scenes and Jack has no issue being a figure head. He knows he's pretty. And it means he can flirt with Dr. Carter a lot more.)

John fell into it by accident. Literally. There had been an issue with the air vents and so someone (not naming names but it rhymes with Davanaugh) decided to open one of the emergency exits which opens onto a running trail and he fell into the hole because it wasn't there. He somehow wasn't injured, but unfortunately, this isn't the movies and unlike Men In Black they don't have the neuralyzer and so there's no way to erase John's memory of seeing a six foot scaled man with a pair of wings and a third eye. It's just easier to pull him into it. (rodney's working on the neuralyzer, but he's glad John didn't get memory wiped because he's got a good brain...and a good lot of things)

Other thoughts: Vala and Sam are my fave parts of the latter two seasons.

Teal’c is written so… talkie and OOC from the previous 8 seasons. Although his attendance of the Vagina Monologues is legendary.

I like that Daniel has someone to annoy him, and sort of bring his “my wife is a Goa’uld” arc to a conclusion even if by proxy.

Cam while enjoyable is… let’s be honest, pretty forgettable. Though as John Crichton he’s adorable and I love him.

Oh, and Landry just… annoys me. 🤷🏼‍♀️ They tried to do way too much backstory with him and his daughter and make the base commander more of a central character like they did with O’Neill. With a team of 5 there just wasn’t room. It was hurriedly brought to a conclusion and it felt like it too.

I finished stargate sg-1 a bit ago but instead of a full series review for now I'll be sharing my thoughts on seasons 9 and 10, Ark of Truth, and Continuum! These are just my opinions and I am more than happy to hear anyone else's thoughts and discuss. Everything is below the cut : )

I can understand why the plot and cast change would put a lot of people off the last two seasons, and it's possible that had I watched the show as it aired, my opinion would be different. But having known those things were going to happen I went in with an open mind. I ended up really enjoying season 9. Maybe it was the novelty, but I was mostly down with the Ori plotline starting out. It seemed like the writers had crafted a strong villain with a compelling storyline. Surprisingly I liked Vala and her dynamic with Daniel (considering I didn't like prometheus unbound) and while it took me a bit, I grew to love Cam. All around season 9 was a solid season with an interesting new villain and new characters.

Season 10 I enjoyed less.

It wasn't necessarily bad. There were a good bit of high points (the first 3 episodes, most of 200, the quest, the shroud, and bad guys to name a few) but ultimately I felt it wasn't as strong of a final season as it should've been. The Ori plot had so much potential but the ending was lacking. I also felt Unending wasn't a strong conclusion to the series. I would honestly prefer not to think about it. Enter Ark of Truth, a movie I found all over the place and disappointing. But at least they tried to wrap up the Ori stuff, I guess?

Fortunately, the writers did redeem themselves with Continuum! I found it very entertaining and fun. Definitely miles above Unending or Ark of Truth.

The general fandom consensus seems to be that the season 8 finale was a better ending to the show, which I agree with. I totally get stopping after season 8 if you want a nice, satisfying conclusion. However, I don't think everything after that should be completely written off. I genuinely think season 9 was good. If season 9 has one fan that is me. If season 9 has no fans then I am dead.

I'd at least recommend watching through season 9 and Continuum. Sure, you won't get an ending to the Ori story but you don't really get that if you watch all of it either :)

I didn’t wanna get invested but now I can’t stop thinking about how Cam x Vala is like the inverse John x Aeryn:

Aeryn Sun and Cam Mitchell: Career soldiers who live to be pilots and go on missions. Service, advancement, being part of a team, seeing the universe. This is what matters to them. Cam is less serious than Aeryn but he’s wound pretty tight, i.e. that episode where everyone is supposed to go to the cabin for a weekend but only Landry and Mitchell make it and Mitchell is lowkey writhing the whole time because he’s stuck at a cabin while they’re getting updates about the mission that’s holding up the rest of the team. When the murder bears show up he’s literally relieved because playing chess and drinking beer with Landry was absolute torture and he wants to have a problem to solve with his team. This is a total Aeryn Sun thing. They would get along.

John Crichton and Vala Mal Doran: Goofballs. Silly but clever, good at coming up with Plans(tm) that everyone else roundly mocks, even though they are actually pretty good at what they do. The outsiders on the team, the “aliens” who don’t always understand the weird culture they find themselves a part of. They both routinely uses humor as a coping mechanism. Just want to be loved. They have a lot of energy and optimism. Each, in different ways, are like the cute golden retriever puppies that others scoff at but you’d have to be heartless not to grow fond of them eventually. They watch a lot of TV and make a lot of references, though for Vala it’s her way of learning Earth culture and John grew up with it.

Cue Cam and Aeryn falling in love with Vala and John over the course of respective adventures even though at first all they do is stare at them in disbelief and bemused wonder.

I am now convinced that Cam can’t act on it in SG-1 canon only because he sees that Vala is misguidedly obsessed with Daniel and he has no intention of getting in the middle of that, plus he’s been given command of SG-1 so having a relationship with a team member would go against protocol and he’s nothing if not a good officer. It has nothing to do with the Stargate writers and their Daniel x Vala agenda, oh no....
