How to determine the necessary deficit to hit a goal weight by a goal timeline.
This is how I decide how much I to eat to lose what I want by when I want.
But first! Some definitions.
Deficit: The amount of negative cals you need. It's what you eat minus what you burn.
BMR: Basal metabolic rate. This is what you would burn in a coma.
TDEE: Total daily energy expenditure. This is what you actually burn in a day by moving, exercising, etc.
There are 3500 calories in a pound of fat.
Okay. Boring stuff covered. Here's how you math this shit.
1. Use an online calculator to find your TDEE.
2. Select the date you wanna lose by and calculate the number of days until that date. We'll call this number d.
3. Plug your current weight, goal weight, and days into this expression
[(CW-GW)×3500]×d
Example:
[(134-120)×3500]×47
In this example to lose 14 lbs in 47 days, as in this example, I need a 1042.5 calorie deficit per day.
4. The result is the average deficit you need per day. Now we calculate how to achieve that deficit.
5. Next formula is easier.
TDEE-deficit=cals you can eat per day.
Example: 1500-1043=457
457 is the number of calories per day I must average to hit my goal on time.
