Guest Viewings in Yosemite National Park
flickr
Guest Viewings in Yosemite National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking up and to the southwest while taking in views of nearby Incense Cedar or Calocedrus trees (as identified by PictureThis app). What I wanted to do in capturing this image was the look up with the nearby bark and focus on that. Closing down on the aperture allowed me to have more of the image in focus from near to far. While the main focus of the image was the nearby bark in the cedar tree, I also felt it important to complement that with the tree crown and skies above.

Plant of the Day
Sunday 31 December 2017
An evergreen conifer native to western North America, Calocedrus decurrens (incense cedar, white cedar) attracted attention due to the glossy green, flattened sprays of scale like leaves tipped with pollen cones. The tree has a narrow columnar habit, with beautiful orange and grey flaking bark. The foliage smells amazing when crushed, sometimes described as similar to shoe polish! Jill Raggett

What I'm Watching With My Camera Lens (Yosemite National Park)
flickr
What I'm Watching With My Camera Lens (Yosemite National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: In the Swinging Bridge Picnic area of Yosemite Valley and the national park with a view looking up and to the southwest to two nearby Incense Cedar trees. This grouping had a symmetry to it that I used in composing the image. The rest was a matter of metering the image to not blow any highlights with the bright skies above while still being able to pull the more shadowed areas of the underside of the tree crown and trunk leading up to that.

The Cedars of Pencils
The Cedars of Pencils
Tumblr media
People interested in pencils have been particularly excited lately about a pencil being made by Musgrave, a 100+ year old pencil company based in Shelbyville, Tennessee (a.k.a. Pencil City). This pencil is especially unique because it is made from the wood of Juniperus virginiana, known commonly as Tennessee red cedar, eastern red cedar, aromatic cedar, and (yes, even) pencil cedar. For anyone…

Calocedrus decurrens, Cupressaceae
Remember the post I wrote right after coming back from Italy last month, and the photos of that beautiful and ancient manor house I added? Right at the entrance of that beautiful place is where I found this interesting conifer, and after reading about it, it makes sense I hadn’t recognised it as something familiar. The incense cedar is a large tree native to western North America and is generally found in Europe mostly as a free-standing specimen in association with old, stately private homes and urban landscaping, so you don’t generally come across it in the wilderness.
Its common name refers to the aromatic scent emitted by the evergreen scale-like foliage when crushed -not a huge surprise, many conifers are interestingly scented- and its fissured, peeling bark is an added attractive. The female cones were probably what caught my attention right away: their shape is quite particular and looking at photos of how they split open when mature and dry I realised I had definitely seen them before somewhere, they’re unique and hard to forget. I really need to write more about conifers, they are definitely something I’ve overlooked in the past but the more I learn about them, the more I fall in love!
