like it's insane (affectionate) to me that Rayla starts in her tirade against dark magic because of good reasons that he should care about like 1) it's dangerous, 2) it hurts him, 3) it puts his life in terrible danger, and 4) makes him vulnerable to the thing she thinks he's most afraid of. And she can't conceptualize what would be worth risking all of that until he says "I did it for you," and well. That she can understand. Callum has risked his life for her over and over, and she him, and she knows he's not going to budge on that; that's part of why she's come back and stayed after coming back as their lives have gotten increasingly dangerous again.

So Rayla switches gears, because she kinda knows that asking Callum to not sacrifice himself for her is almost a moot point, of course it's worth it to him on that level, she'd do the same for him (and has in a heartbeat, that's why she left) and yeah she'll still probably be hypocritical about it going into S7, but of course he's going to want and try to protect her, that's what they do. So Rayla goes to the next area of concern and the one she's less easily able to justify or be okay about. After all, it's one thing to risk "his own stupid human life" (2x04) and another if she can't protect him ("I couldn't bear to put him in danger" / "Yes. I promise"), but it's another to risk the world ("but I am not going to let you risk the future king of the dragons" / "But right now, the world needs me" / "The world is in danger, and you can trust me to stay focused"). The greater good

And that's exactly why he will tbh

Thoughts on Callum?

Still moving the plot forward pretty reliably in s4 and s5.

Also even though he's faster at drawing runes after two years of practice (as in it's noticeably harder to get screenshots of them in s4/s5 than s1-s3), he still can't out-draw Finnegrin with fulminis which I think is a pretty significant flaw for a "hit someone with lighting" spell. But that's really a thought about fulminis.

That post haunts me bc i had the hound himself correct me in a very crucial detail i somehow forgot (big shame for the cites source material like academic books guy i am) but now that im coming back to it i do wonder how much different Henry and Callum respectively would be if one DIDNT go to war and the other Did. After all war was pretty much the turning point for Henry but what would have he done if he didnt do That? And what about Callum, could war change HIM so drastically for the worse?

i'm gonna be fr, red one was pretty fun lol. there's a lot to say about it but i'll just put my additional thoughts in the tags. look it wasn't bad but not great either. a lot of the scenes felt dry and the jokes didn't land well, but i liked it, especially with the aesthetics.

altho thanks to gryla i now have "IS IT A CHARCOAL GRYLA OR A PROPANE GRYLA" in my head lmao. (yes and also i think there's gonna be a gorilla)

There are not enough stars for how amazing this novella is!

“The Exception to the Rule” follows T and C, two strangers who, after an accidental email, make it a friendly annual tradition to wish each other a happy Valentine’s Day—with rules: no pics, no real names, nothing too personal. As the years pass, it becomes harder and harder to abide by the rules for their email “dates” and they begin to question what would happen if they actually met.

This story gave me all the warm, fuzzy feelings! The first half or so consists of email exchanges between T and C and the fun formatting only heightened my excitement as I watched their relationship develop. Though years pass before they decide to act on their feelings for each other, the passage of time felt so natural and the pacing was deliciously slow. With each chapter, T and C share more and more about each other and because it is dual pov, the reader gets to see how their feelings for each other grow from both of their perspectives. This is one of those novellas that I wish was a full-length novel because of how much I adored T and C’s chemistry, but all in all, the epilogue left me feeling satisfied!

Idea I really want to draw eventually but for now will just describe:

Older maggie, lets say older teens anywhere between 15-17, somehow ends up digging up Ace Anarchy's grave and finds his helmet. Whether she was alone in doing this or was with other people, doesn't matter tooo much but regardless. She gets to the helmet

And leading up to this moment her head has just been FILLED with fantasy's about it's power, being able to just taste this helmet that is so unique so special. She's been so eager to get to this moment where she could hold it and truly examine it like she never had the moment to before

She climbs into the grave, too tunnel visioned to notice the clack of Ace Anarchy's bones as she steps on them to reach the helmet.

She leans down, and finally Finally grabs the helmet, lifting it away from the corpse

But she doesn't even get a second to stare at it before she's thrown into a violent flashback. From the last time she had this helmet in her possession. Back to when she was eleven years old. On the battlefield. Callum.

She drops it in a hurry and would be completely disoriented. Her vision darts to the bones in the casket she stands on. Bones bones Corpse dead- Dead Callum dead on the ground the- the bloody stands she could Feel the blood on her hands from touching the seat next to her. She rubs it away this isn't real this isn't real

If Maggie had any suspicions on her relation to Ace Anarchy at this point, it'd make things much much worse and she'd be even quicker to get the hell out of the grave

If anyone else was with her they'd notice something was up but she'd ignore them. Her only objective would be to run and hide. Where? She wouldn't know.

But where ever she'd go, Max eventually would find her at the ends of her attack and help her through the rest of it. Maggie afterwards is exhausted and Max, unsure whether to push to find out what on earth Happened, at least brings her to his room where she can rest a bit longer

What would happen to the helmet in this scenario isn't something I've worked out BUT I would be incredibly interested if Maggie had some sort of reaction to the helmet In Canon.

Given it wouldn't be the first time she's held it AND that day wasn't particularly.... NOT-traumatic.. to say the least.

yeah, i mean early callum/rayla/ezran were fine. early on in like season 1, there’s a huge question mark of potential above their heads. you’re still kind of sketching the type of person they maybe are. why is callum so calm in the face of danger, thinking about cycles of violence even when an elf assassin has a knife to his neck? who is rayla, really? how has being raised an assassin affected her? and ezran is a cute kid, what challenges will he face as king?

anyways as the story went on the answers were “lmao.” they stayed in that potential stage and kind of got worse. meanwhile soren and claudia were faced with pretty serious dilemmas and really tangibly changed throughout the series in a way none of the main 3 have. when the side characters are faced with the big questions and the main characters aren’t allowed to have any feelings, you sort of end up with that.

but like. the baby’s-first-romance is a symptom that they don’t actually know what to do with the 3 mains. it was completely unplanned, and it really kind of shows. even though callum and rayla just.... didn’t really have that level of emotional connection, they sort of wrote it in because, uh, i guess girls and boys can’t be friends. and it wasn’t a small write-in, either. so much time is spent on this romance.
