What is Future Text?

Future Text is an academic research platform focused on text-based communication across cultural, international and interdisciplinary fields. It aims to convey individual research within a broader, international context; The project is taking place from December 2018 to October 2020. It includes the organisation of international conferences and seminars and the development of modern didactic materials that will be used in the participating institutions.

Greek Ligatures Revisited: Byzantine Calligraphy workshop

As the current technology allows the co-existence of formality and self-expression, long forgotten practices of written communication may resurface through the resurrection of calligraphic practices. The workshop focused on introducing to the participants the skills and modern tools to produce a simplified majuscule Byzantine alphabet. Each student has experimented in forming different compositions including ligatures and thus producing a legible to all, yet unique & contemporary depiction of a word or phrase of their choice.

After completing the beginner calligraphy course online, I know what you will be thinking. Now that I have built the foundation with the beginner calligraphy course, what’s next? What’s next is the reason that everyone is attracted to Spencerian penmanship and takes calligraphy courses all over the world without being truly satiated. It’s the ornate, fancy capital letters that exude romance. These are the letters that leap off of the page and dare you to ignore them.

These beautiful aspects of penmanship were immortalized by calligraphers & penmen such as Louis Madarasz, Francis B. Courtney, of course Platt Rogers Spencer and, more recently, Michael Sull.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to provide a view into these beautiful letters and walk you through not only each letter but ornate variations of many of them. Of course, some of them are favorites and many of them you have seen me use time and again. This calligraphy course will be different from the beginners’ course in that we will freeze the video frame and walk through the thought process that is taking place with each pivotal calligraphy stroke. That is one aspect that i believe is most important in learning these letters that I have yet to see another calligraphy course provide, especially an online calligraphy course for beginners. With that said, I look forward to slinging ink with you and introducing these gorgeous letters soon. Cheers!
