Dense observation of the landscape, climate, culture, and existing uses and patterns of the site were worked out in conversation with the client’s mission to mitigate environmental challenges; Faulkner Archi-tects brings together site and home both phenomenologically in the design and technologically through sustainable features and practices.

Technically a remodel, the house utilized the footprint of the existing house as a basis for a new floor plan. An existing fireplace was wrapped in concrete to serve as a major structural element anchor-ing the new architecture. This avoided additional grading and left the hillside open and natural. It also placed the new home directly under the shade of the old oaks, in intimate relationship with the trees surrounding it.

This award-winning home is located on an eight acre, ex-urban property at the base of the Oakland Hills near San Francisco Bay. Formed of concrete and wrapped with Corten steel panels, the net zero energy res-idence is an elegant, low maintenance re-sponse to its context which is draped in rich green foliage and majestic native oak trees.

According to Histortian David S. Gebhard The Sea Ranch came to be “the California architectural monument of the 1960s.”  Since its inspection, Sea Ranch is noted for its distinctive architecture, which consists of simple timber-frame structures clad in wooden siding or shingles. (Ketcham, D. 6/11/2019. “Sea Ranch, California’s Modernist Utopia, Gets an Update” New York Times) Fast forward to today after multiple disastrous fires in the Northern California. Owners and architects like Mary Griffin observe, “Sea Ranch is changing, like our society. We simply can’t build the way we did even 20 years ago.” Lisa Dundee, architect and longtime director of the Sea Ranch Association’s Department of Design, Compliance and Environmental Management, notes, “With Northern California — well, actually all of California — burning up, we’ve really had to challenge ourselves to find alternatives to our traditions.” This building currently under construction is down the road from Sea Ranch Abalone Bay. It joins two other homes recently built using concrete in place of timber. These homes with their sustainable building practices now challenge the idealistic practices now more than a half century old. Or do they? Are these new homes a means of assuring Sea Ranch continues to live lightly on the land given climate change, sea levels rising, and other environmental emergencies that we must face today?
