Just started watching ep. 118 (yes I know I'm behind, I've been busy playing Prey and writing essays on Octavia Butler with life) and in listening to Ludinus' monologue I had a thought about a specific disconnect that cause many, in universe as well of out of it, to view the gods as tyrants. Imogen points it out when Ludinus laments about his family being collateral damage in the battle between the Lawbearer and the Crawling King: would he rather the Crawling King have been unleashed on the world to wreak havoc uncontested? (to which his response was a long silence and glaring at her)

It’s an inability to understand and accept the true scale and nuance the gods operate on, and in doing so choosing to place individual suffering and slights over ultimate consequences that may, and often do, affect the entire world. Yes it’s horrible that the gods struck down Aeor - but they were defending themselves against a weapon of mass destruction, and any other action would have been akin to lining themselves up to be shot. Yes it sucks that the Titans, who were there first, were killed - but they were trying to exterminate all mortals. Yes the deaths during the Calamity were unforgivable - but the alternative would've been to let the Betrayers kill everyone. Yes it’s horrible that the primes wouldn’t let their champions oppose Lolth in taking Opal - but they are in the middle of a battle for the world in which all hands are needed, and losing champions to a minor skirmish when they want the same thing would be pointless. Yes it’s unfair that the gods won’t personally step in and help every little person suffering, such as Ashton and Laudna - but they're literally gods responsible for the lives and afterlives of millions, and also separated by the Divine Gate, which was literally erected to protect mortals from the fallout of too much divine meddling.

When pressed, Ludinus switches to saying that it isn't the collateral itself that is the problem, but that the gods won’t personally remember and beg forgiveness for every single life lost. In saying this, he also claims that he is different - but is he? Does he honor the lives of Orym's family? The children tortured under Trent and other suffering caused by the Cerberus Assembly? The thousands lost in the war between the Empire and the Dynasty because he wanted his own beacon? The entire city of Molaesmyr? Does he even remember the many individuals indoctrinated into his cult and lost in the ensuing battle?

In the end, it isn't about collateral, or honoring those sacrificed. It's that he finds his suffering uniquely bad, and his goals uniquely warranted. Only HE (and people who want the same exact thing as him) has the right to make desicions that affect all of Exandria.

Saw a post recently somewhere about Creating a Champion's comments on Calamity Ganon and it reminded me of how irked I am that TOTK retcons made the previous game's villain so much less interesting.

The idea of OOT Ganondorf degrading over so many resurrections that he's just become this ball of hatred that is a force more than a person was really cool (and sad honestly) and fit very nicely into downfall timeline themes (which is where I personally think those games are). But now it was just a side effect of some completely different guy being trapped under the castle? And he doesn't even seem to be aware of it? Boring.

Listen, I know Jun Wu has done horrible, unforgivable things as a result of his bitterness and his anger and his grief and his resentment, and nothing can make up for the suffering and the anguish that he caused so many people, especially our sweet Xie Lian. I know that.

But... I still can't help but wish that someone, anyone, just one single person, had listened to his story and told him,

Hey. I'm really sorry that happened to you. That was a horrible thing to have to go through; no one could have deserved that. You tried your very hardest. You tried everything that you could think of to do. I'm sorry that not a single person appreciated your efforts. I'm sorry that they only used you. I'm sorry that they scorned and ridiculed and renounced you. I'm sorry that everyone left you all alone in the end. The fact that you tried should have counted for something. The fact that you even thought to try should have meant something.

I just think, maybe if someone had told him those words at any point in time, then things might have been different. Maybe he could have changed. Maybe his heart wouldn't have frozen over. Maybe he could have turned himself around.

For as much as he wanted to corrupt Xie Lian and make him his 'successor', I think maybe deep down, a part of him actually just wanted to be vindicated. To have his suffering be understood. And while Xie Lian did not owe him a single ounce of sympathy, if he had shown him even a little bit and said the above, I'm willing to bet the great White Clothed Calamity would have broken down crying.

Xie Lian himself was saved by a single act of compassion, after all.

There's just not enough empathy in stories.

Heeeeeeey, Master Revali. I think I'm a bit temporarily confused.

If my understanding is correct, then ~105 years ago you died to Calamity, then some time ago you got better (cool, love that for you). But what's the order, were you still dead or already alive for the Upheaval? Is me mentioning the Upheaval spoilers? Other Champions have received asks about sages and Tulin in the right age so I qssume it has already passed.

Is Vah Medoh around? Was there any time travel chicanery in your memory of the Calamity 100+ years ago? Sorry, events-omniscience isn't good with paradoxes.

I'll be entirely honest with you, I have absolutely no idea.

I have memories of dying to Windblight and the Calamity destroying Hyrule. I also have memories of a tiny Guardian opening rifts and Teba turning up to aid me in defeating Windblight, and of us defeting Ganon. I also have memories of being a spirit. In truth, I've no longer got a clue which memories are the real ones, and whenever I ask people what history entails, I get mixed answers from everybody I speak to. It's almost as if several timelines became tangled and nobody seems to know what really happened anymore.

All I know is that some day recently, I suddenly woke up alive and well aboard Vah Medoh, was discovered by Teba, and have been living in the present ever since.

The Upheaval was about halfway through when I woke, and I didn't have much of an opportunity to assist while I was recovering from quire severe injuries. However it was entertaining enough to observe from afar just how swiftly it was delt with this time around.

The Divine Beasts are currently in storage beneath the Castle; however I visit Vah Medoh often. She can no longer function as a weapon as her energy core has been used up and must recharge for a few decades at least.

The most frustrating part about it all is that before my death, I was a few years older than that brat of a knight, and now somehow upon awakening I'm a few years younger than him. As if the runt needed anything more to lord over me. I supose he must have been alive and aging for a period before I was revived. Still, it's a surreal situation to be in.

I try not to think about it all too much else it gives me a terrible headache and an existential crisis.
