Elze’ith couldn’t remember the last time he brushed someone else’s hair like this.

Well— no. Perhaps he could. He just didn’t want to look at the memories. Didn’t want to face the fact that he and Altair were so far apart, that he might never see his partner again.

But it was easy to keep those thoughts bottled away right now. There was a new face, a new voice, a new kindness. Calamine was soft-spoken, and curious, and young and old all at once. And he was a vampire, and that made Elze’ith uneasy, even as he felt bad for the response. But above all, Calamine showed Elze’ith kindness. Elze’ith would have wanted to do the same regardless, but there was new meaning to it now, a desire to strengthen that connection, a desire to repay what had been offered.

He was as gentle as he could be as he ran the brush through Calamine’s hair, and he didn’t think about anyone else he had done this for. When all of the tangles were gone, he set the brush aside, and began to braid a small section on the side. It wasn’t much; Calamine’s hair was too short to do anything elaborate. But it was a token of appreciation, a signal that Calamine was cared for in the same way he had cared for Elze’ith.

When he was done, Calamine smiled at him. Elze’ith smiled back, knowing he would do a lot more to see that simple joy again.

Encore une fois cette année, je vous partage ma sélection des meilleurs albums de 2024 en les jugeant comme il se doit, non pas par leur musique, mais selon leur cover. Y'en a des beaux, y'en a des laids, mais c'est toute de la musique excellente, je vous le jure!

Aussi, parce qu'il m'est absolument impossible d'être concis, je voulais rapidement mentionner 3 albums super chouettes que j'ai découvert en 2024 mais qui ne sont pas sortis en 2024!

La soundtrack parfaite pour un film coming of age qui se passe dans une petite ville en automne.

Girlfriends - Girlfriends (2009)

(math rock, emo, loop)

Y'a rien qui sonne comme ça! Je vous laisse une petite capsule temporelle du band qui joue dans un bar, en 2009, pour vous donner une idée. Le groupe a malheureusement jamais sorti d'autre album.

2hollis - The Jarl (2021)

(rap médiéval)

Ce projet a été retiré des services de streaming mais, malgré tout, ça vaut vraiment le détour d'aller écouter ça sur youtube! Du moins, si l'idée d'un album rap/hyperpop qui roleplay à fond un univers médiévale vous intéresse! ⚔️

Bon, assez de niaisage! Commençons ce classement 2024.

30. 070 Shake - Petrichor

(psychedelic pop, hip-hop, r&b)

Si triste... Alors qu'il y a à peine 4 ans, 070 Shake nous avait offert le cover magnifique de Modus Vivendi, elle continue maintenant sa descente aux enfers avec ce cover répugnant. 😔 Sa musique est toutefois toujours aussi transcendante et je la recommande vivement. 🙂

29. QUEEF JERKY - absolute madness

(hip-hop, comédie, noise pop)

Hum désolé Queef Jerky mais vos lunettes de cyclope bidons c'est complètement dépassé! 🤨

28. Sipper - 666 Song - EP

(house, indie)

3 excellents singles réunis de façon baclé dans un EP avec une pochette encore plus baclée. Mais bon, on s'en câlisse.

27. widowdusk - Self-Titled

(screamo, midwest emo)

La classique photo dans un skatepark, y'a rien de mieux comme cover! Sauf 26 autres entrées sur ma liste.

26. Calamine - D​É​CROISSANCE PERSONNELLE

(rap queer, anti-capitaliste, queb)

Calamine, l'icône, la légende. L'album est sick mais le cover a l'air malade.

25. Jamie XX - In Waves

Ah Jamie XX... Y'aime tu assez ça, les petits rectangles blancs! 😊 En passant cet album là est encore meilleur quand on est gelé.e, ça l'air.

Cute! On dirait moi quand je vois l'état du monde sur mon cell et que je considère me défenestrer. 😅🤭

23. Alexis GL - Heure bleue

(dnb, electronic, new age)

C'est un premier EP intime, contemplatif et joueur que nous offre celui qu'on connaissait autrefois sous le pseudonyme de Quiche!

22. Melt-Banana - 3+5

(noise rock, experimental, hardcore punk)

J'ai le plaisir de voir le duo japonais en spectacle à Montréal en 2024, et c'était siiick! Ils faisaient même leur show avec un masque. 😷🙏

21. Guhn Twei - Capitale De l'arsenic

(hardcore punk, death metal, anti-capitaliste, queb)

L'an passé, malgré que j'avais adoré leur album, j'avais été obligé de placer Guhn Twei en dernière position, car ils avaient utilisé comme cover une horrible image faite par intelligence artificielle. 😪Heureusement, cette-fois-ci, leur cover peint à la main reflète nettement plus leurs valeurs anti-capitalistes et environnementales! Les images polluantes faites par AI ne servent que le capitalisme et la classe oppressante, fuck l'AI. En 2025, faites comme Guhn Twei: faites de l'art ou engagez des artistes!

20. SeinsSucrer - Gros Sucre

(rap queb)

Le rappeur SeinsSucrer a sorti au moins 12 albums en 2024. 🤯 Sans joke, j'aurais pu faire un classement 2024 juste de SeinsSucrer si j'avais voulu... En bref, mes trois highlights parmis ses projets: Gros Sucre, Poutine Suprême et Bruit Blanc.

19. Crachat - Fille Poupée

(punk, riot grrrl, queb)

Un criss de bon album qui pète des gueules. Je recommande à n'importe qui qui est tanné.e de voir des tabarnak de discours masculinistes empester la pensée populaire des hommes cis. En attendant de fesser du monde dans face, écoutez Crachat, ça défoule!

18. Curta'n Wall - Yr Gwyddbwll

(folk médiéval, black metal, dungeon synth)

Bon, là on est dans le bout du classement où je sacre, parce qu'osti de tabarnak que c'est bon Curta'n Wall. Même si vous trippez pas métal, laissez vous charmer par ce cover goofy pis imaginez-vous en armure sur un champs de bataille PENDANT 5 MINUTES. 😤🛡️

17. - Population II, Mulch - Mulchulation II

(noise punk, psychedelic rock, queb)

Mulch et Population II, deux bons bands punks québécois, se réunissent pour nous proposer un split intense bien suintant.

16. - Monsieur Spirale & les anges - EPun

(garage, noise rock, queb)

Utiliser des images ultra quétaines ironiquement, c'est peut-être pas l'affaire la plus originale, mais dans le cas de Monsieur Spirale & les anges, ça sert parfaitement son gros cynisme distortionné. ''Faites (le) vivre de la musique mes câlisses''

Altair and Elze’ith had talked, before, about what they thought dying might be like. Fond grief in his eyes, Elze’ith would wistfully trace constellations and speak of souls rejoining the tapestries woven by the gods and last breaths becoming the first breath of a new life. There was some solace in that, even if it didn’t sound real. A promise of peace, of something better.

There was no peace in this death. There was just the cold, and the fear, and the betrayal. There was just Cal’s eyes, looking at him with a thousand emotions but no mercy. There was just the water filling his lungs, no matter how hard he tried to hold his breath, an inescapable fate.

His heartrate soared, and then it slowed. Somewhere in the back of his mind, Elze’ith screamed. And then, there was nothing.

Nothing but the fear and the dark and the soul-deep knowledge that he had failed.

A rush of magic that he shouldn’t have been able to feel wrapped around him so tenderly and pulled him back into an explosion of light and sound and sensation. His instinctual cry of alarm was instantly cut off as Altair choked on the water that hadn’t left him; eyes wide and unseeing, he spasmed and flailed until cold hands helped him onto his side so he could cough it all up. The touch made him terrified and grateful all at once.

Air had never tasted so sweet. Each breath was a miracle, a monumental effort that took all of his attention. He needed to keep breathing. The thought of anything else, of going back into the water, was fire and ice and lightning in his veins, overriding all else.

He had died. Wings bound and magic sealed, he had died. Killed with freedom just beyond his grasp. Killed without even knowing if Elze’ith was safe.

For the first time in weeks, he was alone in his head, and that made him want to cough up his own heart alongside the water that he spilled from his lungs.

Trembling and weak, he forced himself to look up at Cal. The man he thought might be able to help them. The man who had led Altair into the water to die. The man who had proved Altair’s every worst thought and fear about vampires correct.

Cal didn’t say anything. Altair didn’t either. There was nothing left to say.

Apparently all the neighbors are talking about how I was social yesterday and hung out with them and like... Yes it's nice seeing people sometimes, and I like the people who were hanging on the front porch while the power was out. But like... The power was out. I couldn't breathe inside, so ofc I was hanging out. No, I don't want to be outside today, because the power is back and I can breathe inside. But yes it was nice seeing everyone and bonding in our shared misery post-hurricane.
