Nothing gets you into back into writing and creating quite like watching a good show. The first batch of episodes for season 2 came out today (November 9th, 2024) and I've binged it all without breaks, and here is all the thoughts I have 5 minutes after finishing.
They did not make Vi a cop. Read: she never accepts the lie of peace through violent 'peacemaking'. Her character was set up in such a way that she can't, and they stay loyal to that. Vi refuses the enforcers, refuses invasion, refuses shelter in Caitlyn's house to defy her, refuses the badge that would grant her everything she wants, refuses Caitlyn herself, refuses to take the easy 'violent' way out. Her cop art is two episodes long, and it involves her joining a small task force that does what would be considered minimal damage. All in line with both hers and the show's morals.
They made Caitlyn a cop. Read: in the push and pull of power, she chooses power. During the scene where Vi is talking to the 'good' cops the cute girl with the bright eyes mentions that Caitlyn bailed her by threating to withhold her families funding--she bribed them. It's funny. Vi acts as her control. She outright refuses and walks away from Caitlyn when she offers for her to join the forces. She talks her down from a full on enforcer attack to a small strike force comprising of herself, Caitlyn, the 'good' cops, and a poor alcoholic man off the street. When Caitlyn starts abusing her authority again when arresting some poor man left for dead in a vent, Vi cools her down again, deescalating the whole action further by telling her to call the rest of the strike force off now that they served their use. Caitlyn backs down again. Finally, when she gets so close to her goal of killing Jinx, and a final obstacle appears in front of her, seeing that the gun in her hand gives her the power to clear it, she decides to take the shot. This is Caitlyn's true turning point. When she shoots Vi, and then when she tries too shoot the at the kid and Jinx. The scene where they kiss is fits into this theme too: Vi begs her not to change, and Caitlyn tells her she wont. And she doesn't.
There is a difference between what a story portrays and what it says about what its portraying. All this to say this is politically, socially, philosophically conscious writing. For example, the beginning of episode two is a 'cool' montage of the strike force committing violence on the undercity. But it begins with the Kiramman ancestor's saying "the people of the undercity deserve to breath," and then cuts to Caitlyn using the vents to choke them. No matter how styling the montage is, the irony of the juxtaposition hits deep. At the end of episode two, Jinx mocks Vi for this specific fact, "you're poisoning us too now?" The
And therein lies their tension: Vi is never seduced by power or lofty visions. Caitlyn is, both to cope with her personal tragedy, and because it comes easy to her. It is all tied together by the motif of the vents and the smog. Finally, despite the depth of their interpersonal conflicts, and their personal psychologies and aspirations--there are the people of Zaun, and the poison they ingest. 'Janna's' wind blows away Caitlyn (and Vi) and all the smog, and redirects it towards the surface. And it is the perfect tie: scoping out from interpersonal drama to games of power.
Everybody is sort of pushed around in the aforementioned games of power. Caitlyn by the specter of her mother and her legacy (and love); Vi by her 'guilt by taint' connection to Jinx and love for Caitlyn, Jinx by her filial love for Silco, Jayce by his public expectations. Whatever their crimes and mistakes we can at least sympathize with their reluctance at their inclusion in the game. The active player in the first season was Mel--here, its Ambessa. And unlike Mel, her sights are on war and power at all costs. She moves all the pawn pieces: orchestrates the attack on the memorial, manipulates the sole remaining council member, and finally recruits Caitlyn as her mask, as a symbol to hide behind and maneuver with even more freedom. The scene where Ambessa calls out for war and invites Caitlyn, intercut with all the moves she made to get everyone here, is one the my favorite scenes ever. Ambessa you're so sexy pls become more evil.
The fundamental lesson: Summed up for me in the title of S1E3: 'The Base Violence Necessary for Change'.
The connective thread is betrayal of love for something greater. Ambessa abandons Mel in her pursuit of power (despite her claims to the contrary). Caitlyn abandons Vi in her pursuit of power. Victor abandons Jayce to ????. And, the central conflict of the show, Vi abandons Jinx in her adherence to her morals and self-ascribed protector role. Unlike any of them though,--unlike Cait who butts Vi in her old wound, or Vi does not manage to actually punch Jinx when she gets the chance. Maybe the greater good should include the things we love? Is it worth anything if it doesn't?
Arcane has an amazing team of artists and writers behind it. Whatever fumbles it has are directorial. Victor's arc continues to be this. I wanted machine herald, not arcane jesus. I can appreciate the 'close call with the void brought me enlightenment concerning the weakness of the human conditions', but that isn't how they've gone about it so far so. I don't think we're getting machine herald from this, and I hope I'm wrong.
Closing remarks:
It continues to amaze me that I got exactly the show I wanted, with exactly the characters I wanted, with exactly the region I wanted explored, with exactly the themes and politics I wanted explored. THEY MADE A SHOW ABOUT MY FAVORITE CHARACTER, MY FAVORITE LESBIANS IN LEAGUE, and my favorite geopolitical conflict in league. I tear up a little when I think about it. This show feels like it was made specifically for me.
The budged thrown towards this thing shows like in no other production.
The character designs are AMAZINGGGGGG. The chem barons are my favorite.
Them including Janna's story, especially with such an important thematic role, is very meaningful to me.

Having Vi develop overt feelings for Caitlyn in the context of hunting her sister down is like... SO STRANGE! how does she move past that?
When you phrase it like THAT, yeah it is strange lmao
Here's my little brain-rotted idea as to how their relationship will develop from the finale.
Initial shock of what happened. Mixed emotions. Anger from Caitlyn, maybe. Confused sadness for Vi. Vi will want to support Caitlyn because she almost lost her and realizes she cares a lot. Also Caitlyn's hurt, her mom's probably 💀 and Jinx fucked off after dropping a literal bomb. Vi has nowhere to go at this point. She'll follow Caitlyn.
Journey to Piltover as Caitlyn recovers and processes what happened. More anger from Caitlyn, maybe, but it'll start to morph into sadness. More confused sadness for Vi. Time will pass. Time skip? I dunno.
I suspect drama between Jayce, Caitlyn and Vi, if he survives (which he almost has to, come on). This will demonstrate how protective Caitlyn is of Vi still, and how she doesn't want anything to happen to Jinx. Vi will love that. Caitlyn advocating for her is necessary.
They figure out Jinx is in danger. Vi doesn't want her sister to be thrown in Stillwater to rot or be killed. Caitlyn doesn't want Jinx to die either. Caitlyn is a peacemaker in this, so I believe she will advocate for Jinx as well. Might take a bit of time or loaded conversations, but she will get there.
Both of them will hate Silco and blame him a lot and maybe that will be what they'll have to come to terms with together. He's not the only reason Jinx is the way she is or Zaun became what it is. The Council had responsibility and they failed to protect their citizens. Or something in that regard.
In their quest to find Jinx and the events that will follow, Caitlyn and Vi will be a team. They will have known everything about one another and will know how much they care about the same things. One another, and the greater good. All that.
Even if it doesn't happen exactly like this (it won't), I'm sure their relationship will be central to the plot of season two (I think Christian Linke even said so). It's how we will be rooting for Jinx's redemption along with them. Caitlyn will ultimately show mercy for Jinx after everything and it will be major for Vi. They will both be going through a lot and it will make them stronger.
All that being said, I don't expect their relationship to be overly sweet or romanticized in the context of what happened, especially at first. I may be expecting more emotional realism than what will be delivered, but I trust the final product. I know it'll feel realistic no matter what.

It has been a very long day. Viktor thinks back to the procession, to crossing the border, to seeing Blitzcrank once more, and to... before. To the aurora above Piltover.
The city’s star-rods burn blue against the sunset. He forces himself to look away from it all. To look back to Baker’s Hill, back to the bench, back to Caitlyn. He’s why she is here. He’s why she has to stand watch outside the city, instead of...
“I-” he begins, and thinks better of it. He sits down beside her, resting his staff against the bench’s wrought-iron arm.
There’s nothing to say in these times. He knows that well.

Arcane but the opening is a parody of Peacemaker’s opening with Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, Silco, Vander, Mel, Ambessa, Viktor, Ekko, Jayce and Heimerdinger. Also Jinx is John Cena.

You'll be the maker of the peace (I'll be the peacemaker)
by CashewNut_Cam
About two years had passed since Vi and Caitlyn had first met at Stillwater. Although the hardships they'd endured together since then had certainly changed and strengthened their relationship - it sure didn't make it any less confusing. As Sheriff and Deputy, the two had almost entirely eraditcated any and all evidence of crime. As difficult as it may be to distinguish between the two; whenever evil rises, good will always step up to the plate. The same, however, can be said in reverse; except, not always in the ways we anticipate.
In other words; Vi has been hopelessly pining after Caitlyn for years. Instead of acting on it, however, she finds herself running in the opposite direction. There's only so far you can hope to run before your legs give out and you come apart at the seams.

Her leg is bothering her again today. It had been a damp spring day, and now with the evening there is mist over the moors and marshes. She leans heavily on her cane as she makes her way off the path. The lantern does not provide much light, only enough to make the shadows of the trees loom and stretch like reaching hands, and enough to provide constant distracting reflections on the ripples on the mud and water. It is quiet, though, leaving Caitlyn with only the sound of her breath, the creak of the lantern and her increasingly-laboured steps through sucking mud to keep her company.
The swamps of Piltover are quite unforgiving. Even to locals.
She pauses for a moment, ankle-deep in the mire, catching her breath. She shuts her eyes and tries to clear her thoughts, focusing over the sound of distant crickets and frogs and other swamp wildlife (distant, yes, there is a limit to nature in certain untrod paths, they don’t want to get too close to certain parts) to try to reorient herself. There’s a leyline under all this mud and water, and it tugs at her consciousness.
And then something else does, above her.
Caitlyn looks up, and sees through a gap in the trees the night sky. There is a falling star, bright and gold against the dark and almost-starless expanse of Piltover’s evening. She covers the lantern for a moment, plunging herself into darkness, but now she can see it more clearly, can watch its swift arcing passage until the tree canopy hides sight of it. And yet, when she looks forwards through the trees, there is now a light ahead of her. Hazy, but warm, like a campfire, when before the lantern in the sheriff’s hand had been the only light for miles.
“Hm.”
Caitlyn leaves the lantern shuttered, and struggles her way forward in the dark. She knows the stories, well enough, of the wisps and spirits who make their home in these wild places. She knows the history of Piltover, the one older than hextech, the one older than the City of Progress and the stones it is built on. She knows she can die out here, if she is not careful. Or if she is disrespectful.
But the light is on the leyline. She was going that way anyway.
Step by step, knee twinging as she braces herself with her cane, the lantern a heavy dark counterweight in her other hand, she moves further in. She is fortunate that the mud never gets higher than her knees (though gods know she knows how to find the safest route through the marshes by now, while others might sink in over their heads).
But finally, she steps up onto old stones, and drier land, and shakes off what she can of the clinging mud. Out the corner of her eye, she watches the light. It is approaching, and with every step closer to Caitlyn, the light dims.
And ‘step’ is the right word, for under the warm golden glow is a shape. A strange one, but a familiar one. Patterns etched into skin. A long face and neck. Long white hair bound neatly, both from her head and from her tail. A tapered horn and long tapered ears. Hooved feet press onto the surface of the water, onto it, without breaking it - and leaving nothing but ripples behind - as they cross to join Caitlyn on the broad stone.
“Amser hir dim gweld, Soraka.”
The Starchild smiles, and gives a small graceful bow. “Gobeithio eich bod yn iach.”
“Hah.” Caitlyn leans on her cane. “I’m well enough.”
Soraka studies Caitlyn thoughtfully. Her eyes are gleaming orbs of gold, bisected by broad horizontal pupils. Through the darkness and the gold both were flickers of constellations and space-dust, the hint of the cosmos beyond Runeterra, the glimpse of divine given flesh.
“You are getting older,” the starchild notes, tilting her head slightly, and smiling. Her pupils stay horizontal, despite the tilt of her head.
“That I am.” The sheriff sets the lantern down, unshuttering it so that there is some light, now that Soraka’s sidereal gleam was fading. “Such is the way of all mortals.”
“Not all of them.”
Caitlyn’s lips twist, and she shakes her head. “Thank you, but my answer is still the same.”
“How wonderful.” The starchild gives a wider smile, baring teeth that were just a little too broad, a little too sharp. But then she straightens up and looks around. “But what brings you here? This is far away from so much of Piltover, Sheriff.”
“It is still Piltover, and I have my duties.” She frowns slightly. “But what of you? Not that you are unwelcome here, but Piltover has few stars. What brings you here?”
The starchild inclines her head in acknowledgement, her smile fading. “I come on a mission of great import, for the sake of a good friend and for the lives of all those she defends.” She reaches into one of the pouches at her belt, and brings out a small rectangle. A card, emblazoned with a C.
“Good gods dead and buried.” Caitlyn exhales, feeling cold. “He did it. He actually did it.”
“The absolute mad lad.”
Both women turn as they are joined by a third party. Outside the circle of the light, the shadow was small, child-sized, but the person who crosses the threshold into the stone circle is a good deal taller, and accompanied by the smell of ozone and overripe strawberries.
“Who would have thought the last nail in your coffin would be driving you to such an early grave?”
“It is not you I worry about, sheriff,” Soraka canted her head - again, the pupils of her eyes remained horizontal - as she looked back to Caitlyn, paying no heed to the newcomer. “But your people.” She waits for Caitlyn to take the card, and ignores the insulted huffing from the third figure.
Caitlyn takes the card, grim faced and silent. She imagines warriors in bronze, fueled by religious fervor and bloodlust. After a moment, she looks up at Soraka. “How do the Solari know Piltover is to blame?”
“Your rivalry with ‘C’ is well-known, even told around campfires on Targon’s slopes. Thus, in the eyes of the Solari, you are responsible for this theft.”
“Hm.” Caitlyn looks back at the card, her frown deepening. “And they let you come to warn me?”
“Blessed are the peacemakers,” the starchild says, unsmiling. “It will take them some time to march to Piltover. I volunteered as a messenger, ostensibly to arrange for the immediate return of the stolen tome.”
“Submission to a foreign power,” the newcomer scoffs, arms folding. “That’s not how we do things.”
Before Caitlyn can find the right words, the starchild turns to face the newcomer, eyebrow arched disdainfully. “There are so few who worship you these days, child. If the Rakkori cross the border, they will see to it that there will be no-one left who even knows your name. A circumstance which is entirely undesirable, I imagine, for someone like you.”
The newcomer gapes, then looks to Caitlyn for support. Caitlyn diplomatically keeps her eyes on the card and her thoughts on the insufficient walls around Piltover City, leaving the newcomer to huff and grumble on their own.
“I do not have the tome,” Caitlyn says, quietly.
Soraka looks thoughtful. “Do you know where it is?”
“Not precisely. But it will be in Piltover, somewhere.” She exhales through her nose. “I will speak to the people tomorrow. Can you delay the army?”
“No.” She shakes her head, gaze fixed on Caitlyn’s head. “It is book or blood. They will accept nothing else.”
“Gods damn.” The sheriff exhales, then puts the card into her jacket pocket and leans heavily on her cane. She stands a moment in silence, then turns her attention to the newcomer. “Your majesty, I beg your leave to perform the rites another day. I am called once more to bar my nation’s gates.”
The newcomer’s lips pinch for a moment, and they give the starchild a sour look, before inclining their head graciously in the sheriff’s direction.
“Thank you.” Caitlyn exhales through her nose, then picks up the lantern and braces herself on her cane. It is going to be a long walk back through the swamp.
Soraka links their arms. “Let me walk with you,” she says, her horn gleaming slightly. “Your burdens are heavy enough this night, my friend. I will not have you slogging through the mud if there is anything I can do about it.”
There is another insulted huff behind them. Caitlyn barely notices, given how novel it is to walk on water, and how in her mind’s eye she sees an angry army making their way from mountain to marshland.

Caitlyn - Champion
Tumblr media
Caitlyn was always a dogged and thorough investigator, a quality that helped propel her fast through the ranks of Piltover enforcement. But when a case concerning a certain 'C' came along, one that countless other enforcers had abandoned, it seemed almost as though Caitlyn had finally met her match. Almost.
Tumblr media
She burst in, leveled her rifle at the culprit, and looked down the scope. There, smiling through the looking glass, was a familiar face.

im pretty sure riot requires casters to memorize ability names or something. i can’t repeat 90% of ability names even on ADCs i have played 50+ games on. i can’t name the abilities of most dota heroes and ive played like 10+ games on every one and i have 4000 hours in the game. how the fuck do the league casters literally know like every ability name lmao.
off the top of my head, tristanas e is explosive charge. uhhh. lucian’s q is piercing light. caitlyn’s q is called piltover peacemaker. jhins w is called curtain call. ezreals q is mystic shot. i don’t think i could name even one of jinx/xayah/all the other adc’s ability names lol. in dota i know offhand a lot of the ability names but also its a lot easier to learn then in dota since you can look at the enemy’s skills.

What weapons/technology does her police force and Caitlyn herself use?
I’ve been meaning to write about the capabilities of her hextech rifle, since her color story has implied it can do a few nifty things. Here’s some of its qualities:
A long range musket ball that shatters into a cone on impact. This is modeled on her Q (Piltover Peacemaker) in game, where it breaks off into a small of circle of aoe after it hits something. It takes a while to fire, and is usually used as an opening shot to disrupt a target or their environment.
A net wound with an electric current. Somehow, Caitlyn’s stored a lot of thin rope in the barrel of the rifle, and when it is shot through the air it expands and ensnares people it touches. Nonlethal jolts are applied to the subject’s body, rendering them unable to move for a short period of time. This is how she incapacitated Devaki.
A homing shot that tracks a target’s blood signature. The wardens have access to most of the medical files in the city, and so once the system has identified the person, the lock-on figure kicks into gear. The bullet will hone in towards the target no matter where they run, but because it is based on blood, another human body in the path of the shot can intercept it. This shot is not designed to be lethal, because of the user error that can occur.
Because this requires the database for it to function, Caitlyn cannot use the homing shot on people it doesn’t recognize (like Jinx).
Other wardens have similar rifles, although they customize theirs according to their own preferences (some have hookshots on their weapons like Camille, others fire shards of ice, gaseous substances, etc). The police force in general just use standard fare pistols and rifles, although because of the recent wave of crime and the tension between Houses growing, they’re working with hextech laboratories for weapons with improved aiming mechanisms and other means of incapacitation.
