Breakfast @ Cafe Bao
Having visited and enjoyed Cafe Bao a while ago (read about that trip here), we couldn’t resist going back to try their breakfast offering. We didn’t want to trek all the way to Kings Cross to find it full so we made a booking for a Saturday morning, woke up nice and early and headed on down.
We started with a couple of drinks; a peanut milk and a Cafe Purin. Peanut milk is one of my favourite drinks to have with breakfast in Taiwan. While this didn’t quite live up to that standard, it was pretty good. It was a little runnier than I’d like and the flavour wasn’t quite as peanutty as I’m used to but it wasn’t bad, definitely the best I’ve had in London. The Cafe Purin is essentially espresso with a custard foam topping. This was really sweet, especially at the beginning when you are essentially just eating custard foam but once you got down to the coffee, it’s a like a very rich sweet latte.
If you’re at a Bao, it’s never a bad idea to order a bao and for breakfast, there was only one on the menu; a sausage and hash brown breakfast bao. I love a good breakfast sandwich (which I consider this to be) and this was a good one. If I had to be nitpicky, the hashbrown could’ve been crunchier and the whole thing was a little undersized but otherwise, an interesting take on a breakfast bao.
Onto the savoury soy milk with fried dough sticks. I can tell you the presentation of this was definitely fancier than any version I’m used to. The soy milk had a lovely savouriness to it and just a tiny kick from the chilli oil The fried dough sticks added some much needed crunch. If you chuck a few in and let it soak for a little bit, you get the amazing milk soaked exterior with a crunchy centre.
This was a set egg custard with a fruit salad. This was essentially a creme caramel but with a very light caramel and fruit on top. I guess as with the whole meal, not exactly authentic but compared to everything else we were having, this was really light and refreshing.
What was less light and refreshing (but in a good way) was this rarebit on bao toast and a egg yolk on top. The toast was the mantou dough that’s super fluffy and when toasted up gives you a nice crisp on the outside. Bursting the yolk meant that it slowly seeped into the bread and formed a eggy, cheesy fluffy mess that had crispy edges. Really good!
Now this was something I was really excited about as Dan Bing are pretty much my go to breakfast item in Taiwan. I could happily have them pretty much every day and have never seen anywhere in London serve them before. As happy as I am that there is now somewhere I can get one, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. Now, it might’ve been to do with my own expectations which possibly could never have been met but I felt that the pancaked itself was just a bit too thick and I think the texture was a little too soft. Despite what is likely to be my own biases, it was actually still pretty tasty.
Every time I go to a Bao restaurant, I always have to remind myself that while it is technically a Taiwanese restaurant, I should not compare the food to what I am used in Taiwan because as long as I don’t do that, I really enjoy the food. I’d more than happily go back for breakfast again.

Cafe Bao
Any time that there is a new restaurant in London that claims to be Taiwanese, we will always want to give it a go. Over the pandemic, the Bao chain of restaurants opened a new restaurant that was meant to be their version of a Taiwanese western style restaurant near Kings Cross; Cafe Bao. It sounded like a really interesting mix of Taiwanese and western food so we headed down and gave it a go.
Our first dish was a prawn and trout roe toast. As you can see from the photo, this was pretty generous with both the prawn and the trout roe. I am a big fan of pretty much any type of roe so this dish was right up my street. A great start to the meal.
These were Taiwanese chicken kievs. Far from traditional but well fried and filled with garlicky goodness.
This was a bacon and egg black garlic glazed spring onion pancake. Now I do love a good spring onion pancake in Taiwan and quite honestly, this tasted nothing like that but was still really tasty. Once I got over the fact that this was not like any spring onion pancake I’d had before, I really enjoyed this.
Now this was on the menu as a bao but it was basically a savoury doughnut. It was a seafood roll with lobster and crayfish in a mayo sauce topped with chives. I’ve never been particularly impressed by the actual baos that you can get at Bao so I think I actually preferred this.
This was one of their more signature dishes and was a ham hock congee pie. The pastry top was superb and while I didn’t think pastry would go well with congee, I was wrong. I’d definitely order this again.
The Bao caesar salad. It came with chicken and salted egg in a spicy caesar dressing. The dressing actually had a pretty hefty kick to it but the salad was great. The lettuce was nice and refreshing and the bacon and chicken came together really well. I think this may have been one of my favourite dishes of the meal.
This is the salted egg sad bao. The sad face, which wasn’t actually that sad, is a cute touch but I have to admit, I’ve had better salted egg buns, most notable at Din Tai Fung and at Bun House but this wasn’t bad. The custard wasn’t particularly salted eggy but the dough wasn’t bad at all.
The Lonely Pudding was basically a creme caramel with a bunch of whipped cream on top. That being said, that sounded pretty good to me and tasted pretty good too. It was a very well made creme caramel, although I personally thought the whipped cream was a bit much.
Overall, I have a similar view of Cafe Bao as I have of the other Bao restaurants in that I like them but don’t love them. I can’t think of them as Taiwanese restaurants as the food is far from authentic but it is tasty and works well as a fairly cheap and cheerful option if you are looking for small bites.
Cafe Bao have started a breakfast menu in the last few months so the aim is to get down and give that a go. Keep your eyes peeled for our thoughts on that!
