I'm going to Amsterdam for my birthday soon! Is there anywhere you reccomend going or general advice? I'm really looking forward to it :)
walk around the city center and look at the architecture, buy some food and drinks and have an improvised picknick by one of the canals (go and sit in one of the green spaces beside the streets/"in" the canals that they created recently), visit the secondhand book market at oudemanhuispoort, if you want to visit the anne frank house/the van gogh museum/the rijksmuseum: buy your tickets online in advance, browse secondhand english books at "the book exchange", visit begijnhof, the vondelpark is crowded and overrated in my opinion but the streets around it are beautiful, have a look around in the red light district if you must but it's not worth it spending a lot of time there (loads of drunken male tourists and the worst tourist trap shops and cafes you have ever seen), take any ferry to amsterdam noord and back again to see the water and feel the wind in your hair (it's free), and my best kept secret tip: for a walk in a more "authentic"/less touristic/still very picturesque environment: take the metro to noorderpark (only about 2 minutes from central station), then take a walk through the street nieuwendammerdijk and explore its side streets, and stop halfway for a cup of tea/coffee/a drink at café ‘t sluisje :)

hi! I'm going to start uni in Amsterdam this September and I wanted to ask if you have any recs of places I should visit? it can be anything (cafes, stores, parks, museums,...) I hope you'll have a lovely day ✨
Hiii! How cool that you're coming to Amsterdam! Things are obviously a bit different now than usual, and I'm not sure if everything on the list below is still open, but there's still plenty of things to enjoy in Amsterdam. Here are my personal recommendations:
Museums:
Rijksmuseum: huge art collection, you can spend hours and hours there. They also have a library where you can study, apparently.
Museum van Loon: old canal house built in the 1600s that belonged to a wealthy family. So beautiful inside and there's a garden where you can sit and enjoy the green and quiet in the middle of the city.
Stedelijk museum: museum of modern art, really cool in my opinion.
Van Gogh museum: Make sure to buy a ticket in advance, because they're sold out days or even weeks in advance!
Anne Frank house: house where the Jewish girl Anne Frank was in hiding during the second world war. So impressive. Same here as Van Gogh museum, buy your ticket in advance.
Allard Pierson Museum: Roman and Ancient Greek art. The entry is free for UvA students.
Shops:
The Book Exchange (Kloveniersburgwal 58): my favourite second hand book shop.
Other book stores: Waterstones (Kalverstraat 152), the American Book Center (Spui 12).
The cutest plant shop (from these posts): Warmoesstraat 83A
Dille & Kamille (Nieuwendijk 16-18): an oasis filled with pots, plants, cooking utensils, baskets, candles etc. Like a friend once said: "When I die and go to heaven, I'm sure I'll end up at Dille & Kamille." (This is not sponsored lol, I'm just a fan)
Cinemas:
The eye film museum: beautiful view of the water, exhibitions, cafe
De uitkijk: really tiny and old and so charming.
The movies: super charming atmosphere as well.
LAB 111: big selection of older classic films.
Other special places & tips:
Hortus botanicus: the botanical garden.
Begijnhof: courtyard belonging to an old nunnery right next to Spui. Very quiet and pretty. Not many people know about this place, strange as it is, so it feels like some sort of secret garden :o)
Parks: the Vondelpark is overrated!! It's very crowded. My favourite parks are the Oosterpark, Park Frankendael and the garden allotments at the Westerpark (closed in winter).
Artis: the city zoo. Students get a discount, I think.
Take a trip to Amsterdam noord with the ferry! It's free and just the trip itself on the water is lovely.
I listed some of my favourite cafés and restaurants in an earlier ask.
I hope this is helpful & I wish you all the best of luck and fun in Amsterdam! Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know :)

Cafe Keppler, Amsterdam
Located in Amsterdam North, at the boarder of a red brick houses quarter, this Cafe is a little causy jewel. The atmosphere is very warm with a combination of wood tables and a mix of old '50's style chairs. Coffee is served with different brewing possibilities including Hario V60 and Chemex.
A selection of basic, but well done, sandwiches and a few more elaborated dishes is available for breakfast and lunch.
Service is very friendly. The possibility to sit outside in the large square in front is also very nice.
A warm place where you can feel well relaxed.

ooooo what were your favourite places you visited or things you did in amsterdam ... ?!
a few ppl asked me this so here’s a list of some places + tips ! keep in mind i just visited once, i’m not an expert. research the places you want to visit (i did this + watched some Youtube vlogs lol)
Van Gogh museum - i loved seeing his works in person! i did not realize how much texture some of his paintings have. like for example the famous sunflowers, i’ve always just seen prints of it and ofc those are going to look really flat. (save yourself from standing in a long line for tickets and buy one online + reserve the time you plan on getting there. preferrably in the morning and on a weekday bc there will be less ppl)Stedelijk museum - i have to admit i enjoyed this one a little more because of the diversity and variety of works, and there weren’t a lot of ppl there. (i also bought the ticket for this one online but i don’t think you have to, it’s not as popular/busy as the Van Gogh)for both museums you can get an audio guide. the one at the Van Gogh is 5eur, and at the Stedelijk it’s free. how i got there by public transport was with trams 2 or 5, stop Van Baerlestraat. the museums are right next to each other.Horticus Botanicus, the botanical garden - cute place, also cute gift shop! i loved just sitting on a bench, drawing, surrounded by plants. there’s also a smaller greenhouse with butterflies. i didn’t visit their cafe but i heard it’s good. ofc the outside gardens are not in bloom at this time of year so if you’re visiting later during spring or summer they probably look amazing.you can get there by trams 9 or 14, stop Mr. Visserplein.Openbare Bibliotheek - public library! it’s free. i went there when i was super tired from walking around and spent 3 hours on the 6th floor relaxing and drawing. it’s pretty peaceful, you will be mostly surrounded by students studying. there’s a nice view of the city from one side of the room that’s just windows, if you want to take a pic too :)it’s close to the Centraal station so you can just walk there if you’re in that area.Athenaum boekhandel - i didn’t look at their books, but the magazines !!! the beautiful ~indie mags~ that i can’t find in Belgrade. I bought 032c, Flow and Printed Pages. i didn’t know if anyone would be interested in this place but i’m including it. a lot of transportation gets you to the one located at Spui square, but i used trams 2 and 5.Vegan junk food bar - i’m not vegan but this had good reviews and yeah, it’s so gooood. you can only pay with a credit card though! i didn’t know this, only had cash with me but the server still arranged for me to be able to pay. kind ppl.i walked there from the Van Gogh museum bc it's not far.Umaimon - Japanese food. i had one of their ramen bowls.Kantjil & De Tijger - i grew up with Indonesian food so i have high standards for Indonesian restaurants, but the dish i had was good! The portion was just a little too small for me (but then again i was really hungry after walking around).Van der Linde - art supplies store! I like that you can browse by yourself and the staff doesn’t bother you lol.Vondelpark - near the museums!Keizergracht, Prinsengracht, Herengracht - strolling around these canals was lovelyanother thing i loved was just….being in public transport! this will not be anything special for most ppl, but i loved listening to 5 different languages during one tram ride haha. i don’t live in a very diverse place, nor a place with such efficient public transportation.
I visited some more places but these stood out to me! And ofc there were spots I visited and didn’t stick around long like the Dam square because it was just too crowded/touristy for me.
Places i didn’t visit but want to in the future:Amsterdam NoordAnne Frank houseVita’s FriesMassimo GelatoSarphatiparkVenkelRijksmuseumStrawberry AmsterdamHummus bistro d&aMeatless District
tips:-save all the places you want to visit on the Google Maps on your phone/tablet and then download the offline map of Amsterdam in the app. this was how i navigated the city. it shows you where you are if your location is on. it’s amazing.-pay attention to where you’re walking/standing!!! don’t block the path for ppl on bicycles.-when using the tram, enter either on the first door or the last double doors. i learned this the hard way lmao. also always check in and out with your transport card.-if you’re shopping in a supermarket they don’t have bags to give when you’re paying for stuff (well, at least the ones i’ve been to didn’t. Amsterdam is really good about plastic bags, i don’t think i’ve used any while there!) or you have to pay for a plastic bag. so just in case you can bring a tote bag for groceries, that's easy to carry in a backpack or a bag.

All About the Different Locations for Rent out Apartment in Amsterdam
Tumblr media
Rent out apartment in Amsterdam is often not just based on features such as a balcony, bath, or beautiful kitchen. The location is one of the first choices you have to make. Would you rather live in the center of the bustling capital or would you rather find some peace outside the ring road of Amsterdam? In this blog series, we explain everything about rent, rental, property management, and corporate housing. Not only do we cover factual information about our services and contracts, but we also advise on what to take into account before making a decision. This blog informs you all about the ‘highlights’ and pros and cons of different places in Amsterdam.
Center of Amsterdam
When you think of Amsterdam, you’re probably thinking of a vibrant, touristic city with bars, restaurants, shops, and pubs on every street. We don’t deny that the center of Amsterdam does indeed look like this. Yet Amsterdam is much more than that. As soon as you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of central Amsterdam, you can take the free ferry to Amsterdam Noord.
Amsterdam North
Although Noord used to be an up-and-coming neighborhood, it’s now a bustling neighborhood full of culture and activities. Noord is not only green and family-friendly but there is always something to do. It couldn’t be easier; take the free ferry from Noord to the city center and in no time you’ll be right in the middle of it. No matter how nice the busy city is, sometimes you just want to get away from it all. Along the IJ you can cycle into the nature of Durgerdam. This cycle route from the Nieuwdammerdijk offers plenty of opportunities to take a break and enjoy the surroundings. Durgerdam itself is reminiscent of the Netherlands in bygone days. To be able to enjoy the IJ even more and the view that goes with it, you should try one of the terraces on the north bank overlooking the water.
Amsterdam East
East is known for its wide streets with 19th-century buildings. The highlights of East are without a doubt the Oosterpark and the Tropenmuseum. The large selection of greenery in the East is no superfluous luxury in our capital. This way you can relax after a busy day at work. The Oosterpark has vast fields and lots of water. It is therefore not surprising that this park has been the place for residents and tourists to take a relaxing walk, play sports, picnic, or meet each other for over a hundred years. In recent years the Javastraat – with all its clubs, cafes, culinary wine bars, and traditional bakeries – has become the beating heart of Amsterdam East. This district has a rich multicultural core which creates a unique and dynamic atmosphere. Did you know that the Dappermarkt in Amsterdam Oost was put in the top ten best shopping streets in the world by the National Geographic Traveler? This market – and the entire Dapperbuurt area – are well worth visiting and researching.
Southeast
Clockwise we travel further to Amsterdam Zuidoost. Artists have recently been used to transform staircases, viaducts, parking garages, underpasses, and sidewalls of high-rise flats into monumental works of art. The start of this art route through the H-neighbourhood lies at subway station Bullewijk. In addition to art, you will also find a large green shed surrounded by nature where you can enjoy a delicious convent beer. The beer from this brewery is the only real beer of the Bijlmer. For an afternoon of enjoyment among the animals, the Bijlmerweide petting zoo is the place to be. In addition to goats, calves, and rabbits, you’ll also find a playground and a canteen for thirst-quenchers and snacks. Events for the little ones are also regularly organized here. The food court World of Food is an indispensable part of your tour of South-Eastern Europe. Here you will find over 25 eateries with the best street food from Arabic, Creole, Indonesian, Surinamese, Hindustani and Thai cuisine.
Amsterdam South
Do you want to spend a day sniffing out culture? Then you’ll end up in Amsterdam Zuid. Oud-Zuid is full of museums such as the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Moco Museum, Stedelijk Museum, and the Diamond Museum. After a day of culture sniffing, it’s best to unwind in one of the beautiful parks that Amsterdam South has to offer, of which the Vondelpark is the best known. To get a closer look at local life, dive into the Albert Cuyp market. Little more than a few hours of wandering around one of the most Amsterdam markets there is. Too hot or too crowded for a museum, park, or market? You’ll find a dose of peace and coolness in the Beatrixpark or Amsterdamse Bos. In the middle of the latter lies the Grote Vijver, which is considered by many Amsterdammers as the ultimate swimming pond.
Amsterdam West
Parallel to the Vondelpark runs a lively Amsterdam shopping street in West: the Overtoom. This shopping street is full of nice boutiques, shops, and concept stores. Old West has grown into a Walhalla for vegetarians and vegans. Anyone who thinks that you can’t get your cultural traits into the West is wrong. De Hallen is a cultural center full of shops, a cinema, a hotel, and a food market. Craftsmen are invited here every month to sell unique, homemade items. Here you’ll find not only clothing and jewelry, but also bicycles, furniture, books, and other trinkets. Fancy a nice walk through one of Amsterdam West’s most cultural neighborhoods? The Helmersbuurt is a unique neighborhood with tall trees and several cultural hotspots. Once upon a time, countless artists and writers lived here. Sniff out the creativity they left here.
I want more!
Do you want to know more about Amsterdam, the different hotspots, and what you can do here? Or do you have nice additions, tips, or advice? Please let us know by sending an email to [email protected] and who knows, we might be able to show your highlights next time.

Tips on where to eat and drink in Amsterdam
Tumblr media
A cloudy and rainy day is the perfect occasion for spending some time on my Tumblr and uploading something that has been in the back of my mind for too long. After 5 months of my relocation in Amsterdam and almost 2 years after I made this city my new home, it’s arrived the time to wrap up some of my best recommendations on where to eat, drink, where to have a coffee, or have typical Dutch sweets!
If you have received this link from me, you are most likely traveling soon in Amsterdam, so I’m very happy to share with you my recommendations and maybe we can do something on this list, or explore something new together 🙂
Disclaimer: in this list are missing all the most touristy stuff to do. For those, you can easily google “What to do in Amsterdam”, what I’m trying to do here is giving some insider tips.
Enjoy!
Where to eat: 🧀
Worst Wijncafè - delicious place based on sausages cooked in a very particular way.

This Sunday: Some old stale piece of baguette mad it into the mixture for french toast which I had in my fridge. I added some extra milk and loads of cinnamon and baked it, on the top a dollop of sour cream I had left over from yesterday’s Mexican diner and a good spoonful of homemade raspberry coulis. Oh yeah also had a a little piece of bam mama on my fridge so baked it alongside. Sunday diner with a cafe latte. Enjoy you Sunday and Bon appetite. De 10 Foto's Met Een Lang Verhaal Staan in een blog, op Tumblr. 88
