Steve feels like an asshole.

He really didn't mean to do this. What was the point really? To be popular? How stupid is he. He ruined his only chance at real friends. And for what? To mess with Carol? Yeah sure she's a bitch but why does that matter? And Tommy? Yeah he doesn't even really want him. Steve just wanted to get back at Carol.

God he's pathetic.

And Eddie. Jesus fucking christ. Eddie. He's been so nice and sweet to Steve and he just basically threw it all away. He took a bit fat dump on their friendship and a chance at something more for nothing. And Robin, she was so kind to him too. He shakes his head. He needs to fix this now.

Steve gets up, wipes his face and takes the canvas with him. He doesn't even glance at the painting knowing if he did he would stare at it for hours. As soon as Steve is 10 feet from his house he can feel the music pumping through his feet. Shit. The party, he thinks. He sighs as he walks closer to the door.

When he walks in the music screams in his ears. God I'm going to get a massive headache after this. One of the basketball players comes up to him, Steve thinks his name is Jake? Jason?, something with a J.

"Hey Steve. Had a good time with Hagan, huh." He said sluggishly.

"Umm, yeah I guess." Steve replied wanting to get away from him.

"You guess? Tommy told me you loved it."Jason? said.

"Loved what?" He was so confused they only ever kisse-.

Oh. My. God. Did Tommy tell people they fucked?

"Ummm, you guys did fuck. Right?" The guy - Jake? No Jason definitely Jason - said.

"No?! What are you talking about? We barley even made out!" Steve replied slightly frantic and a little angry at Tommy for lying.

"OK, jeez. Just asking! That's just what I heard. Don't shoot the messenger and all that shit." Jason mumbled as he began to walk away.

Steve stood there in shock and anger. He couldn't believe this. He needs to think but he can't because of this stupid fucking party. That's it he can't take it anymore. Steve power walks to where he knows the radio is and full on unplugs it. He gets on top of his fireplace and screams at the, now confused, party-goers.

"That's it! Party's over, guys! Go home!" He yells over all the protests. He sees Tommy and his friends stare at him with annoyed looks. Steve watches as Tommy tells his friends something and goes to walk towards where Steve is. "Dude, what the fuck?!" He says.

"What?" Steve replies slightly confused but with left-over irritation spilling from his voice. "What do you mean, what? You stopped the music and told everyone to go home!" Tommy argued but Steve thought it was pointless because he was, So. Fucking. Done. "And?! It's my house and my party. I can do what I want." Steve huffed, "Now, get the fuck out of my house, Tommy!" He practically yells at him.

Tommy just stands there in shock not knowing what to do. "Well?! What are you waiting for? Leave!" Steve yells this time. Not just at Tommy, but instead at everyone who stayed standing there like complete idiots. They all scramble to get their stuff and rush out the door. Tommy shakes his head and starts to walk away. Before he leaves he tells Steve, "You are not as cool as I thought you were." Then he walks away with all his friends. They keep looking back at him and giving him looks.

Steve feels like a total fool. Who was he to think that Tommy was an actual good person? God he's a complete buffoon. As time went on and the last people trickled out he began to clean. After around 5 minutes later he felt a tap on his shoulder. He quickly turned around.

The face he saw was definitely not one he'd thought it would be.

Took me ages to get around to this because I've been flirting with danger aka writing for fic exchanges again but the thing I love more than writing is talking about shit I've already written, so. I love writing for kink memes so much, you guys. This is a piece of Stranger Things smut where Steve is the unwilling voyeur to Eddie Munson getting spitroasted by bad men in positions of authority, one of whom is dad bod Chief Hopper, and Steve is super horny and super emotionally confused about it, and Eddie is super emotionally confused and semi horny about it, and then they go watch Highlander in the theater together. I believe in porn conceits played for drama and I also believe in inventing a bad man to DP the other side of your blorbo. 

abracadabra, here's the keys to the kingdom - The Stand, Randall Flagg/Larry Underwood

Writing Randall Flagg doing very bad things to people is my life's joy, and I had a lot of fun writing him doing very bad things to Larry Underwood during the course of that hopped-up coke-crazed house party that leaves him so catastrophically in debt to other bad men. It's really fun to play in Stephen King's sandbox, always, and to unravel some of this novel's threads, but I keep writing Randall Flagg using magic to fuck with people. If I'm being really declarative and bold, I'd say I put all the gross sex stuff in here to remix and re-examine the highly gendered sexual horror around Flagg's cold cold snaky dick, but I also was just not really there for the cold dick at the time. Maybe I will be in the future.

Fletcher/Neiman Gone Girl AU, my beloved. Is this my "best-written" fic? Probably not. Is it the fic that has given me so fucking much joy? Sure is! 

To The Skies Only - Ravenous (1999), Boyd/Ives

Cold-weather cannibal domesticity with a really narsty bit of flesh-consumption and playing with the canonical healing factor that comes with the film's depiction of cannibalism as almost a form of vampirism. 

oh but jesus was a crossmaker - Cape Fear (1991), Max Cady/Danielle Bowden

This film is exactly the kind of profoundly flawed specimen that gets my brain's wheels turning, and I had a wonderful time writing for it and exploring one of the elements that's the most odd and engaging, namely the deeply fucked villain/heroine dynamic between the wildly sleazy, undeniably dangerous antagonist (by far the most memorable aspect of the film) and the troubled teenage daughter of the nominal MC who hankers to act out but gets way more than she bargained for. I love love love a disgusting crime road trip and I had a lot of fun writing this one.

Musical Review: Mean Girls (2017)

“Mean Girls”–the new musical by Tina Fey, based off the 2004 film (also penned by Fey)– had its very first preview tonight in Washington, DC. I’ve been looking forward to this for months as a huge fan of the movie, but I recognize that this show is effectively a ROUGH DRAFT and DOES NOT represent what the final Broadway production could look like in any way. As such, my review could differ from others as time goes on and things I write about now may very well not exist/get drastically changed by next week’s shows. Here we go:

For starters, it wasn’t bad. The songs were generic at times, but when they weren’t, they really shined—my favorite was a number called “Revenge Party” toward the end of act one (I assume that’s the name, since the Playbills did not have a song list). The choreography was also really fun to watch and the set was very dynamic, with a combo of DEH-like movable screens and traditional moving set-pieces. Of course, they crammed (almost) every memorable line of the movie in there, albeit sometimes a little forcefully–one I noticed specifically was “She doesn’t even go here!”, though that could just have been the actor’s delivery. I thought Taylor Louderman, Regina George’s actress, tried too hard with her role at first, such as by forcing a very “valley girl” accent, but had eased into it by the end of act 1. Barrett Wilbert Weed killed it as Janis. Damien (Grey Henson) was also fantastic, and I wouldn’t be surprised if either were nominated for supporting actor/actress, and I was glad to finally see the former live after being a Heathers fan for so long. Erika Henningsen was a very good choice for Cady, though I wish she had more information about her transition into a plastic, from her own conscience. It falls a little flat there, but in exchange it humanizes Gretchen and Karen, the other plastics, in a way that I found to be an excellent touch, dealing with mental illness and self-esteem issues, which, I didn’t quite expect.

My biggest issues were story and pacing. The first act lasted two songs too long. Revenge Party, where they start to plot RG’s downfall is where I thought Act 1 should have ended. Story-wise, I can see how it wouldn’t serve as an act-closer, but it’s so big and loud that it might as well be.

Story: an abridged version of the movie, done pretty dang well. Best musical/book worthy? Nah. Not in this state. If you hadn’t seen the movie, or were at least familiar with it, you’d be totally lost. It’s a mess for new viewers, and that’s gonna be what kills it on Broadway. It’ll only last as long as people who grew up with it will see it, which is only gonna be like a year or so. It doesn’t have the instant appeal of Heathers or Legally Blonde that will keep people beyond its generation interested. If it jumped to Broadway as-is, I’d give it a year; however, this is the type of show that would make a KILLING on tour, and that’s exactly what I think they’re going for. They’re gonna put it up in NYC, have it get a few tony noms and general buzz, and then when it closes they’ll use the headlines to advertise it across the country.

My final two complaints are of the book. The content has been heavily modernized to include social media. Thus, given it was written by someone who is almost 50 years-old, there are many scenes that awkwardly pander to millennials/young people like “how do you do, fellow kids?”. That, and Tina Fey really could have come up with new lines instead of rehashing them ALL from the movie. Not to say their inclusion was bad, (except from what I mentioned above), but this was a prime opportunity to write some new, relevant material. The only new zinger that stuck with me was RG mentioning that the president blocked her on twitter.

All-in-all, it’s a decent rough draft. It isn’t immediately memorable besides a few songs, but I totally expect them to have a much more polished show by the time they reach Broadway, as long as they keep the cast. It’s a great, albeit condensed, version a classic, but could have longevity issues if the pacing and awkward modernization isn’t remedied. Rating wise, I would give it a C+ | 3.5 Stars | 6.7/10.

If you can, do see it while it’s in DC! It’s very fun and I plan on seeing it once it hits NYC as well.

for someone who was once considered a prodigy, cady had a knack for being dumb. none of her papers were kept in folders or any other bindings. there was only the rare paperclip from time to time. she also had a tendency to just carry a pile in her hand, since her back never seemed to fit it all ( her bigger bag didn’t go with her boots today ) . thus, to no one’s surprise, when a mild breeze picked up, her assignments started to fly away.

“ah, fuck,” she began to chase some of the papers, dodging anyone who was in her way. she managed to catch most of them when she almost collided with a stranger. whatever was in her hands was sloppily held close to her chest. she looked down, noticing one of the last papers under his foot. “uh, sorry, but... can i get that paper from under your foot? kinda really need it.”

You stood, almost uncertainly, at the foot of your bed with one hand resting lightly atop the table. Hesitantly, you turned around to look at the mirror one last time before seeing your brother's unamused look.

"You can go already, Y/N, Steve couldn't care less if you were wearing a trash bag. He practically foamed at the mouth after seeing you in that ratty sweatshirt, it doesn't make a difference," Dustin deadpanned.

Gesturing helplessly, you craned your head towards the mirror to look at the back of the dress. Did it show too much of your bare back? Would Steve even mind? In turn, that lead to: did you care too much about what your literal ex thought?

"I don't care about what Steve thinks," you managed rather unconvincingly, "we broke up months ago. It doesn't matter."

One thing about having Dustin for a brother meant that just about nothing escaped him, "Doesn't matter my ass, you spent a week picking a dress for a party that he was just going to be at. Not even one he was hosting: who are you kidding here, Y/N?"

You grimaced, "Is this too much?"

Dustin assumed an excellent poker face, "You're wearing makeup, which you renounced ages ago because it was destroying the environment, you're going to a party, which you hate because alcohol makes you want to puke, and you're wearing a dress."

"A dress?" You repeated, not quite sure where his point was going. You wore them, didn't you?

"Not dress, like- proper dresses," Dustin gestured frantically, "Long, party dresses. Not skirts, learn the difference."

You ran a hand along the hemline of your outfit, "It's not too long, is it?"

"No, no, that's the thing. It's just as short as what that girl Steve used to hang out with wore," Dustin tried to come up with her name, "Cammy, Cady? Maybe it was Christina. Something like that."

"So, not natural?" You pressed, subconsciously dabbing at your eyeshadow to lessen the look you'd spent no less than an hour on. Your hair was finally something short of a bird's nest, a feat that had taken far more energy than you'd like to admit.

Dustin crossed his arms as he looked at you scrutinizingly.

"It's just too natural. Y/N, you look just like her - her type. Not type, you know what I mean."

Billy was uncomfortably close to you as he downed his umpteenth drink for the night, his hand resting on your waist while he occasionally glanced at you with that almost predatory look in his eye.

The amount of sweaty, closely packed bodies around you had made it horribly difficult to navigate around the place, but the moment he'd seen you, he'd seemed to make it his mission to keep you by his side for the rest of the night.

Or even longer.

Sure, you'd acted as if the alcohol wasn't much, but after choking down a few mouthfuls you'd given up on drinking for the rest of the night. Clear heads, clear conscience, or something of that sort. You weren't going to knock yourself unconscious within 100 meters of Billy Hargrove: dumb party and infallible ego or not, you weren't that stupid.

Despite your attempts to remain sober and looking decent, the edges of your hair were soaked and sweat glistened on the curve of your neck, causing your dress to stick at you.

But despite all that, you forced a smile, sensing the whispers that had only begun when Billy had taken your hand.

"Oh, with him? Wasn't Harrington enough?"

That was one of the better voices that kept nagging at you, that only amplified when Billy's hand somehow made its way onto your thigh, moving closer and closer.

It made your heart race, but not the way poets go about it.

Still, you smiled. And you said nothing. You let the rumors flicker, let them turn into some sort of a wildfire as you directed your attention towards other things.

God, you were stupid.

You let Billy Hargrove's stupid hands wander and it was only when he leant forwards to place a kiss on your cheek that you excused yourself.

Stupid, stupid Y/N with her inability to say no.

You had tiptoed your way into the hall, slipped out the front door, and leant against the outer walls of the house in desperate need of some fresh air.

You didn't expect anyone else to be there, but the annoyingly warm but unwelcome smile that could only belong to Steve Harrington seemed to haunt you wherever you went. Hair unkempt, he had taken a similar position to that you wanted to.

Surprised by your appearance, he muttered, "Rough night?"

"You'd think," was all you managed before you turned away from him, ready to find somewhere else to sulk in peace, somewhere else where you could be by yourself.

As you shifted in the other direction, you felt a light grasp on your arm.

It wasn't heavy, it wasn't the sort of revoltingly controlling grip that Billy had forced onto you. It was light and the kind that tried to appear careless, but had unspoken weight behind it.

"Hey," Steve tried as casually as he could, "you can stay. I won't talk, or whatever."

You were anything but casual. His hand on your upper arm, warming your body in the freezing weather, and that god-awful smile that was just the right mix of charming and awkward.

The kind you'd missed waking up to.

So you stayed, and you let Steve drape his jacket over your arms before you - under the influence of the alcohol, you later defended) - tilted your head upwards and inhaled the familiar scent that was Steve Harrington.

And it was nothing short of intoxicating.

You placed what you hoped was a reassuring hand on his shoulders, but Steve didn't reply.

Your hand fell, and you turned your back on him, trying to take even breaths as your shoulders began to shake. It all came crashing down on you, in that moment.

Eddie was dead.

Max had died.

And Steve, you didn't know what to call it.

Something had changed, in the wake of Eddie's passing, an unfamiliar coldness that had settled between you two. It was just so fucking hard to get Steve to smile the way he used to. That smile that used to send a rush through your body, used to make you feel even more alive when he placed a light kiss on your cheek.

It was empty eyes and empty smiles: you hated it. You wanted Steve back.

But it was a dangerous game that you were playing. You didn't know it yet, but something inside of you had shifted as well. Bordering on madness, some wd call it. Others were less kindly about your condition.

Could you break it to Steve?

In his state, you'd decided not to. Dustin had threatened to do so, but you'd pleaded with him not to. Eddie had taken your secret, at least partially, to the grave. Max, you didn't know. You couldn't put something like that on his shoulders, another weight to burden.

So you slept on the couch and let the nightmares make their way to your head, let them take over your mind and let yourself scream soundlessly as you clutched at the blankets, eyes rolling up in their sockets.

It wasn't that bad, you argued.

It couldn't be that bad.

Because I'm a mirrorball And I'll show you every version of yourself tonight

It was now you that was too far away for Steve to reach. He'd turn around and you wouldn't be there. If you were, the same hollow smiles that you'd cried yourself to sleep with greeted him.

Was this what he deserved?

Because both of you had broken: just in different ways. You had shattered, he had caved in. Your pain turned into nothing, another meaningless plea. His pain still ate away at him, but it was nothing compared to the blankness that was you.

It took a long time for the darkness to leave.

You were with him when it happened. It was to be another mindless dance, almost robotic movements under those dazzling lights. But this time, instead of the cold, unfeeling lips that met his, Steve felt warmth.

He spun you around, not seeing your face yet. Hand in hand, he could feel the familiar flush that always rose when you made contact with him returning.

And when you smiled, it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

The reason was simple: you were a mirrorball.

It was only when Steve was at peace with himself that you could go back to who you once were.
