Ah, I don't think that's supposed to be there. I'm not the best at this computer thing so I'll let Matt deal with it.
That aside, I think we should introduce ourselves. I'll start while he's checking this "issue" out.
Hello. My name's Colin Sloan. Financial advisor. Used to do things more face-to-face, but I figured this program makes things more efficient. Glad to be of service.
Ah no, that is not. No need to worry, it shouldn't cause any harm. Let's simply leave it for the time being.
Hello, I am Matthew Godrick. And I do... ah... I do the more technical stuff. I.. I... wait-
...
Sorry I appear to be experiencing some technical difficulties.
Huh. Did something happen? Do you need anything, kid? You look a little shocked.
I... ah, I'm fine. Just some technical difficulties.
Oh, okay. You can always just take a break. I'll deal with this.
Yes that'd likely be the best course of action. Thank you.
No problem. I'll be checking on the clients now.
...
Get me out of here, assholes!
-David, if you are feeling unsatisfied with our service, you could easily just message us. No need for profanity, please.-
Fuck you!
-SHUT THE HELL UP LARSON-
No, you shut the fuck up! You're both monsters on all fucking levels! Get me out of here!
-Oh, oh no. You're getting it all wrong. We're not... monsters. But I can be one, if it weren't for formalities--
-I'll show you a monster YOU LITTLE SHI--
WHAT THE FUCK
-Godrick, the claws aren't necessary.-
-Well, our 'client' better watch his fucking mouth then.-
I'M NOT SHUTTING THE HELL UP! Why the fuck are you doing this?
-Doing what? Business? Listen here, client. We do what we do to help poor souls like you...
because we could. Nothing else. Got that?-
Ha! That's bullshit! I know you two have a fucking agenda! Got an axe to grind with someone?
-...-
-I think you should watch your mouth, Larson. Do yourself a favour and shut it.-
I'm not shutting up until you get me the fuck out of here.
-Why the hell should we let YOU out of here?-
Because... because I don't deserve this! I need to go home, people miss me out there! You probably wouldn't get it.
-Oh, but you do. David, you got what you bargained for. As for... the people, well... they already know what's happened to you. It was all over the news. They wouldn't question a thing. I made sure they get the details correctly.-
-...-
Huh? What's going on with him-
-Oh. Uh. You know what? David, you're dismissed. Please. Leave your complaints somewhere else, and we can talk about this later. I believe my coworker here is going through a 'bug' again.-
...whatever. Fuck you.
-Thank you for the feedback. We will get back to you in a moment.-

//Hello! OOC Admins here. Enjoy the chaos. I (Rhi) am rlly proud of this masterpiece.
[Hi as well! This blogs being run by myself @doliminuz and @rhithefella ! With Matt being played yours truly (Doli) and Colin by Rhi, and I think we're just passing David back and forth like a basket ball.
It's a Cabin Tales blog using our AU/HC versions of the collector plus Mr Got Snatched himself as their unwilling guest star!]
//And here's some OOC deets abt each of our characters + some important things to know.
Colin Sloan (Played by Rhi)
- Somewhere between 26-34 (doesn't remember)
- He/Any
- Lived during the early 1900s so he's got a lot catching up to do with technology.
- Ancestor of Rhi's version of Kevin from 2.4/Roulette.
Matthew Godrick (Played by Doli)
- 28 years and married (or was before You Know)
- He/him
- Can't really remember anything from pre-death, aside from his death itself, and is VERY short tempered with his victims. Will drop that professionalism completely.
- Cousins in law with Doli's version of Koby from Cry Wolf/1.8
David Larson
- 25 years old
- He/Him
- His dad is a scumbag so he moved away as soon as he could. Originally stayed with a friend named Lance until the events of his story (1.5/Sell Your Soul).
-Brother of Sam from 1.6/Storm Warning, Romeo from The Night We Met, one of the waitresses from 2.1/Graveyard Diner, and Samuel from 2.4/Roulette.
Miscellaneous
- Please do not ask anything inappropriate ofc.
- Again, these are just HCs so don't take any of these as canon.

How do the Mystery Twins meet the Owl House gang? I wanna know their opinions on the entire cast there, hell, I want to know their opinions on the Boiling Isles! I also want to hear any and all headcanons on how the Twins will interact with the Hexsquad (Luz, Amity, Willow, Gus (esp Gus!!!) and Hunter)!!! Feel free to use this post to rant about it. *GASP* How does the end of season 2 happen? Does the Hexsquad still get stuck on Earth with no portal???
Tumblr media
IN ENGLISH
I can't say this enough! I love your questions!
How does the Season 2 finale happen? And how do the Mystery Twins meet the Owl House gang?
During the events of season two, Stan, Luz, King, and Eda prepare for Unity Day, and as Eda's last request, Stan stays with the Hex Squad to protect them.
After the events of the fight against Amity's mother, Alador joining the good guys' side, and Luz's capture, Stan takes the reins and leads everyone to a safe place to plan something quick
The rest of the events of the season finale occur the same, with the exception that Stan protects Luz's back and supports her, defends her and says that none of this is her fault, that helps her to deceive Belos and thus put a coven mark on him to weaken him
To make matters worse, the Collector is freed by King and although he stops Belos, he causes more chaos, Stan, seeing the door that could lead home, decides to do something to save his remaining family, ordering Hunter . Let him take everyone to the door while he is in charge of taking part of the investigation of Belos and the portals
Oh, right, and he also tries to get Luz to the door to save her from all the chaos, because he's a very protective foster father.
In the end, King pushes them both out the door and the portal, which leads directly to Ford's cabin, is destroyed, leaving the Hex Squad, Stan and Luz trapped in the human world.
There, the Mystery Twins and Ford meet the Hex Squad, and in the process, try to comfort a group of scared children, along with a very nervous Uncle Stan, eager to recreate the portal, thanks to the titan who was able to bring Belos' research with him...
The Gravity Falls Squad's opinions on the entire Hex Squad
Ford: he is not at all happy that Stanley has continued with his attempts to return to his dimension of origin, on the other hand, as soon as he saw the children injured and showing signs of exhaustion, he did not hesitate to give them a place to sleep, especially Stan, although we all know that there is too much to talk about between them
Stan: When he saw him for the first time after his appearance in the comic "A tale of two stans", he believed that it was Bill's trap, until he saw that it was indeed the real one, the next thing he knew, Stan was determined to reopening a portal, now to take those children home, he had to admit that that was something noble, but dangerous, he still thinks he is irresponsible and even an idiot, at least until he discovered that he has a magic staff and very interesting knowledge... .
Luz: reminds him a lot of Dipper and Mabel, she is a combination of both, since she is very intelligent with wild magic and is also strange, but she has a good heart, she cares a lot about her actions
Hunter: He is worried about his health, he notices how tense he is, he likes him, but he knows that he is very distrustful, apparently, he is more attached to Stan
Gus: He sees him as the weakest, yet he sees his maturity and his desire to learn about the human world, sometimes he reminds him of Stan, but he doesn't want to think about that.
Willow: Is it normal for her to be the strongest in the group? At first he thought she would be the smart girl, until he saw how she controls the magic of plants and thought a little more about it, he has his doubts about whether she is okay after these months.
Amity: he respects her, not only because of her determination, but also because she is very intelligent, although somewhat shy and clumsy at times, she reminds him of Dipper since she is very studious, it is also like seeing a small version of himself
Dipper was excited to meet his Uncle Stan in person, he didn't expect it to be so soon or with several extra guests, but when he heard that they were young witches, his desire to learn helped him interact with them naturally.
Stan: Dipper will never lie when he tells you that what he was most excited about was meeting Stan in person. When the door opened and he was finally able to talk to him, the first thing Stan said was that they needed to remake the portal to take the children. Home, since then, Dipper helps Stan with his work as best he can, while listening to his stories and adventures on the boiling islands.
Luz: he likes her, she looks a lot like Mabel, she is very kind, and being almost the same age, she is great in Dipper's words, he likes talking to her about Eda and King, he really likes hearing about that other one. world he comes from
Hunter: they are both similar, curious, they were interested in wild magic and palismans Hunter is one of the few people I would consider a "brother" or something like that, he likes to tell her what he has discovered in Gravity falls and what dreams of finding once they manage to open the portal
Gus: To be honest, Gus is like a little brother he always wanted, someone who is amazed by everything he tells him, someone who listens to him and asks him questions about his discoveries in the human world, someone who also wants to take him to carry out these types of investigations, practically, Hunter, Gus and Dipper are the trio of young investigators looking for mysteries to uncover
Willow: okay, you have to admire that this girl is the toughest of her group, in fact, Dipper openly admits that he had a slight crush on her, but like in all his few crushes, it hasn't come to anything, yes, admire Willow's strength and determination
Amity: Curiously, he likes her very much, since they are both considered the star students of their respective schools, although nowadays this is no longer the case, they understand the pressure of having to be perfect, get good grades and try to be better than the others. Furthermore, in fact, thanks to her, Dipper understood that he should not be like Ford, because that was damaging his friendship with Mabel, she is a good girl, she gives excellent advice
Mabel is the happiest to have her new friends living in the cabin, it's like having a sleepover all summer. What could be better than that?
Stan: she was the one who most wanted to have Stan at home, when he appeared with the Hex Squad, Mabel was the first to come up to hug Stanley, he is protective, responsible, to a certain extent, he keeps a good eye on all the children, he is playful and charismatic, he spends a lot of time with her and asks her for help with the portal
Luz: "She's my older sister! Say no more!" She wants to be like her when she grows up.
Hunter: "my dream boy..." She once said while smiling dumbly, she was one of the ones who helped Hunter the most, now she sees him as her best friend, although Willow fights for that position, since she also loves him a lot to Hunter "Oh my god, looks like I found a new couple to make!" He said while already making dating plans between Hunter and Willow
Gus: she loves him a lot, she plays with him at things like sleepovers and I teach him the interesting concepts of human dating and his way of courting, something tells her that Gus is very comfortable with her, and although he is just starting, he doesn't It bothers him, it's actually nice...
Willow: "And she's my other big sister!" He once said enthusiastically, "She's very strong! And very tough!" He loves playing sports with her, although he also likes to do her makeup and comb her hair.
Amity: He likes her, but since she is closer to Dipper, he doesn't talk to her much, although when he does, he loves to see her with Luz, he is very happy for the Lumity couple.
Gravity Falls Squad's opinions of The Boiling Islands!
Stan: A living hell... At least until you meet the right people...
Ford: A fascinating place But dangerous, it should not be possible to access that place, it would be best not to open more portals...
Dipper: I could have answers to many of the questions that have never been solved before... I could learn magic, real magic... I wish I lived there...
Mabel: I wanna be a witch! And do magic like Grunkle Stan!
Coming soon: headcanons about the Twins' interactions with the Hexsquad
Tumblr media

do you have the full list for horror movies condemned by the church? Thank you
so there's kinda seperate lists for it, ones condemned by the Legion of Decency, during the years of

The Omen (because it depicts that idea that there is an antichrist in the book of revelations)
J.D.'s Revenge
Dawn of the Dead
The Exorcist (this one is so-so because it was still banned for its profanity & sexual situation, but it's not like they hated the idea that it promoted the catholic church; no the church did not help the exorcist production)
These modern ones morally offended the Catholic Church (this list is offically complete from starting in 2003-July 2022, since OSC News took them over to do movies reviews)

X-Files Collector’s Edition: Creepy and Cozy Cabins
Cabins: the final destination of many, many fic tropes. For our intrepid heroes, cabins are a great setting for either great understandings of relationship-kind, or a temporary haven from their chaotic and bloodthirsty world. I like to keep an eclectic assortment of such fics and mix them all together like a crazy salad.
Loose chronological order below~!
(Edited: Added jordan’s Alligator Moon.)
Canon
aka Jake/ aka_Jake ’s (Gossamer) 14-Day Quarantine (Gossamer)
““Mulder?" My name rasps from Scully's throat.
Ignoring the nurses' scowls, I return to her bedside.
She clears her throat, takes a shallow breath. "I'd've...preferred Bigfoot."
Me, too, Scully. Me, too.””
Post Darkness Falls Scully-- not yet out of the woods-- is devastated at news of the ranger’s death. She slips back and forth between recovery and coma while Mulder tries to bolster hers, his, and Maggie’s spirits.
the_eternal_optimist’s Unheard Of
““The men barged right in, broke the lock on the door. I pulled my gun, told them I was FBI. They were on me before I could even move, Scully.” She winced. “A few of them had baseball bats. One of them had a—a rope, or something heavy like that. I lost my gun before I could even fire it. I think I took a bat to the back of the head.” He sighed heavily. “When I came to, I was like you found me—clothes gone, hands tied.”
“And they just stashed you there under the stairs?” she asked in horror.
He grimaced. “They, uh, they actually dragged me out to the tree line,” he stammered, suddenly sounding very small. “Threw me closer to the forest. Then they, uh, they took that rope to my back. Said something about beating the devil out of me. I think I passed out when it got too painful.””
Beginning in Chapter 3, Scully finds Mulder in the woods-- beaten to a pulp and covered in mud. She cleans him up in a nearby cabin; but his violent marauders return, not deterred by the protections of an enchanted house.
Juliettt‘s Confusion
““A sudden flash of light momentarily blinded her and she dropped to a defensive crouch.
<Silly.  That's Mulder's flashlight -- he burst through the back door at the same time that you. . . .>
And then the crushing pain in her skull, the brief moment of terror and surprise, and blankness. . . .””
S2-3 Mulder and Scully wake with amnesia in a cabin. With Scully’s barely-there memories, she becomes a believer while Mulder scoffs at her “tall tales.” Skinner, flummoxed with their disappearance, arrives too late for true answers.
@discordantwords‘s (Ao3) Somewhere North of Fiji
““Behind her, she heard the slosh of water and a furtive sound, a strange squelching that she couldn't place. She glanced back at the water, saw nothing, then looked over at Mulder. He had the phone to his ear and did not seem aware of anything amiss.
She became aware of a strong odor, the stench of rotting fish.
"Mul-" something grabbed her from behind, needle sharp teeth sinking into her ankle. She tipped backwards, and the last thing she saw was Mulder's startled face, staring on as something small and gray rushed straight for him.””
S4 Mulder and Scully are half-drowned, half-mauled by the Fiji Mermaid who just. Won’t. Die. No matter how many bullets are blasted in its gut.
jordan’s Alligator Moon
““As Scully ducked between trees, her arms out to ward off  branches, brushing spiderwebs and Spanish moss out of her way, a blind, unreasoning panic began to seize her.
Before it could take hold, she summoned the last of her courage and reached back to the holster in the small of her back.  She tore back the velcro flap, grasped the butt of her weapon and drew it.  The motion slowed her, and she let herself come to a full stop, the gun in her hand, to face her pursuer defiantly.
Scully!  No!"  Mulder had slid in the leaves like a first base runner and reversed direction to run back to her.  He scooped an arm around her waist and dragged her backwards.  For one second she saw the shimmer of something in the air, something she could only comprehend as sheer power, and she felt its malevolent intent like foul breath in her face.  Then she was being half carried, half pulled  by Mulder into a sudden clearing.””
AU FTF? Mulder and Scully track their suspect into the woods. They instead find his mangled corpse and near death by Windigo. While tracked in a cabin surrounded by a circle of sugar, Mulder uses his childhood dreams to figure out the mystery while Scully silently fumes over his aborted moves and imposed distance.
@sarie-fairy‘s (Ao3) Skamania County
““I’m okay. I landed on something soft, sort of.”
It was then she managed to roll over, move from where she had fallen as Mulder began to descend. As she did, a sharp pain tore at her torso, and her head throbbed.
“Hold on,” he assured.
It was pliable, yielded as she shoved away.
“I’m coming down there, Scully,” he soothed.
And … furry?””
Post The Unnatural-- Scully-- while fumbling around the snowy woods with Mulder hunting for Sasquatch-- finds a dark hole, a dead man in a zip-up suit, and a serious injury to her side (in that order.) Mulder is left to half-panic, half-haul her to a cabin and stitch an emergency suture.
Love this fic! Classic pull-together of humor balanced with knife’s edge danger, and softened with tender care. (Also, found @mondfuchs‘s art through this!)
XP1′s Dire Straights
““Good. Good. Okay. Just scratches then.”
“’Scratches!’ she says!”
“Well not…I mean it probably only cut the epidermis. You don’t see any fat do you?”
“On you? Never.”
“Mulder-”
“No I don’t see anything like that. Just a…a whole lotta red.””
Mulder and Scully escape a dire bear; but she is more seriously injured than he’d thought. What ensues is amazing banter to keep their minds off of their serious worries as the two clean Scully’s wounds and cheekily address their mutual unspoken interests.
This is an amazing fic. Only dialogue-- but it’s so well-written that you can tell exactly when each character picks up an object or what the other person is doing simply by how they SPEAK WORDS. Great stuff.

“Because your best friends were always guys?” She speculates, suddenly thinking about the Lone Gunmen.
“No, because I’ve never had a best friend.” His eyes tell her that he is being sincere. “So I didn’t know the etiquette on being in love with a best friend.””
A rainy, cozy cabin is the perfect time for Mulder and Scully to reflect on their past best friends and current relationship.
The Cabin
““Mulder takes her to a cabin owned by his uncle. He speaks of Cousin Barry and Cousin Ira, the shenanigans in their youth, the movies they watched together, and the visits to the amusement parks.
Listening to him about his childhood with Ira and Barry, one would think he’s got the best childhood a boy could ever dream of.””

Some of the pieces were rolled carefully into long, tight wands, some barely crumpled, all arranged with exquisite care under the equally carefully-arranged pieces of wood. Scully could practically feel the concentration coming off him in waves.
"Mulder, it never really occurred to me before, and I certainly admire the skill with which you construct that masterpiece you've got going there, but I seem to recall a bit of a phobia you used to have about fire." She placed his mug down on the mantle. "How have you gone from fear to Master Fire Builder?"
"It's all about control, Scully." Mulder paused for a moment as he twisted the life out of another geometrically perfect square of newspaper. "This is our house. This fireplace is a perfect little contained area, inside our house, where one can have a controlled fire that *stays* in control. If I build the fire, I have control over it. I am its master. I *am* Fire Boy.”"

And then someone breaks into the hospital records where Scully was admitted, and then leaves this warning for me to find as soon as Scully and I go back to work."
Skinner's expression flickers at the mention of Krycek, but he waits for Mulder to finish speaking before he replies. "Not that I don't think he's capable of manipulation and breaking into confidential records," he says, "but if Krycek is responsible for it, why would he bother leaving you a warning? Why not just let things unfold?"

"I mean...I would love a big old tree, a fire burning in the fireplace, carolers at the front door.  But that just isn't who we are, not who we've been for a long time."
"Do you miss them, though?" he asked quietly, sitting forward in his seat now as well.  "Your family, I mean."
"I do," she confessed.  "Part of me misses not being able to see everybody.  But you know...given our track record, it's probably for the best." "What do you mean?"
"You've read the files," she said wryly.  "You know the kinds of things that happen to you and me this time of year.  All in all, I'd say we're safer here than we would be anywhere else.”"
S8 Mulder is returned in the late stages of Scully’s pregnancy with complete amnesia. He’s blown people’s heads off in close quarters. Children, even. And when he dug himself from the swampy, stinking mass of Vietnam, and set to work repairing his head, after he met Sharon and decided she needed something better, something more than himself, he got down to the business of it. He set out for more. And so SSG Skinner, on his way to becoming a Gunny, became LT Skinner. The lowest of the low, yet more than that because he had his good conduct ribbon and people knew he’d been in the dirt. While the other Officers held the shrimp fork with ease, Walter tugged his collar and counted tongs.
And when, in the battlefield, the other LTs turned and evaded answering the big questions, LT Skinner stepped up and called the shots, sentenced people to life and death, his soldiers knew. He wasn’t some Academy rat. Walter has always been a Mustang. And he knows another when he sees one.””
My Struggle II/III Skinner reminisces on his impressions of early Scully and their subsequent friendship. He continues to be impressed as she whips everyone into shape-- dumping her ragtag group of misfits in one vehicle, snapping Einstein into place, and gunning it to find William in hopes of a cure.

Since people have taken an interest to some of the "Hansel and Gretel" variations I have been posting about, here is a few more ones for your delight.
Tumblr media
I will start with a very important yet currently unreadable one. It is commonly agreed that when the Brothers Grimm re-edited and rewrote Hansel and Gretel, in their post-1842 versions of the tale, they were influenced by an Alsacian story that had been collected and written in German by August Stöber, as "Das Eierkuchenhäuslein". The translation would be "The Little Pancake House" - the Eierkuchen being indeed quite close to a pancake, being an Alsacian variation of the French crêpe, but thicker and crunchier. Notably several expressions and turn of phrase in the final text of the Grimm came from this story. Stöber's work is very famous and influential in the Alsace region, since he was basically the great soruce and collector of folktales and fairytales there - unfortunately his work cannot be easily accessed today. I do not speak German, and there is no online French translation of his work. They exist - his great-great-nephew did a French translation of his "Legends of Alsace" work in 2008 for example, called "A Thousand Years of history, legends, and oral traditions in Alsace", but I couldn't find any copy of the story or any access to the book anywhere. There was also a scientific edition of "Legends of Alsace" done in French in 2010, but again no luck finding it.
The Internet Archive has a big collection of August Stöber's works, but given they're in German, I can't use them.
I also talked previously of the variation of the story involving "a wolf in a sugar house", instead of a "witch in a bread house". The brothers Grimm, in their research notes, wrote that this story existed in the region of Schwaben, but they did not include it in their version of "Hansel and Gretel". And, as I said and described previously, this story survived in the Flanders region of Belgium, where it was collected and stays a known Belgian fairytale usually called "The Sugar-Candy House". (You'll find it under the tag "Belgian fairytales")
Tumblr media
One variation that I have access to, however, is a French variant of the story, called "The Cabin with a Cheese Roof".
It was collected by H. A. Gueber in "Contes et Légendes", an 1895 collection of French folktales and legends. "The Cabin with a Cheese Roof" is noted by Gueber to be descending from a Swedish variation of the Hansel and Gretel tale. It goes as such:
Once upon a time there was an old and cruel witch who lived in a cabin, in the middle of the woods, upon a high mountain, and she liked to eat little children. So, she had the habit of placing all of her various cheeses upon the roof to attract the children of the neighbourhood. [Note: You can DEFINITIVELY tell this story is French when the candy is replaced by cheese. France loves its cheeses.] Near the witch's cabin, lived a poor peasant who had two children - a little girl who was very stupid, and a little boy who was very intelligent.
One day, the peasant sent his children in the woods to gather strawberries, and they came upon the witch's house. Since they were hungry, the boy climbed on the roof and took a cheese. The old witch, hearing a noise, asked "Who is here, upon my roof?". The boy answered with the softest voice he could: "It is little angels." "Then, dear little angels," the witch said, "eat as much cheese as you want", and she stayed sitting by the fire. The boy then took as much cheese as he could, and left with his sister.
The following day, the children returned to the witch's house, hoping to trick her again. But this time, when the witch asked who was on her roof, while the boy answered "This is just little angels!", the girl, who was said to be a chatty girl, couldn't help but answer "And I'm here too!". The witch immediately got out of the house and seized the children. "Oh yes, you are two pretty little angels, and you will make a good roast. How does your mother kills her pigs?" she asked.
The little girl said: "She cuts ther head with a big knife." But the boy said: "No, no, she places a rope around their neck." The witch placed a rope around the boy's neck, and he fell onto the ground as if he was dead. "Are you dead now?" the witch asked. "Yes." the boy answered. Of course, the witch was no fool and pointed out that if he was still speaking, he couldn't be dead. The boy answered: "If I am not dead, it is because my mother always fattens up her pig before roasting them - she says they're more delicious that way."
So the witch placed the children into a cage. "How does your mother fattens up her pigs?" she asked. "With grain." the little girl said. But the boy replied: "No, no, my sister is too young, she gets everything wrong! My mother fattens up her pigs with cakes and sweet milk." And so the witch gave them plenty of cakes to eat and sweet milk to drink.
[Note: The fact that the witch asks all that does a double effct. On one side it reduces the children to the state of pigs to be fattened and slaughtered - which is a subtext in other variations of the tale, but here is explicit - on the other, it also portraits the witch as an evil double or caricature-twin of the children's mother, trying to imitate her for perverse purposes]
One day (the story does not precise how much time passes), the witch went to the cage and said: "My eyes are hurting, and I can't see if you are fat enough." So she asks for their finger, of course. The little girl was about to give her finger, but the little boy prevented her, and rather gave a little stick - and since the witch found them "very skinny", she gave them twice as much cake and sweet milk. A few days after she asked for their finger again, and this time the boy gave a "cabbage's tail" (you know, the thick stump/stalk of a cabbage]. Finding them fat enough, she got the children out of the cage and into her cabin, asking the little girl to prepare a great fire in the oven. When it was hot enough, she asked the kids to climb, one after the other, onto the oven's shovel, so she could cook them.
The little girl was about to obey when her brother took her place. But as the witch was about to shove the shovel, the little boy rolled onto the ground. As the witch was getting angry, the boy said: "Madam, we are stupid and clumsy. Show us how to climb on the shovel!". The witch did just so, and the boy pushed her into the oven and closed the door.
The children took all of the witch'es' cheeses and returned to their father. The witch died burned in her oven, and nobody cried upon her death.
I've got more stories, but I'll place them under the cut:
Tumblr media
Another French fairytale (folkloric one, not literary) that is often compared to Hansel and Gretel is a story called "The Lost Children" (Les Enfants Egarés). Originally collected by Antoinette Bon, Paul Sébillot took it back for his collection of Auvergne folktales - mentionning the story came from the Cantal area. It is actually a sort of cross between Hansel and Gretel, and Little Thumbling.
The story goes as such: In the past, in the village of Gargeac lived an avaricious coupled called Jacques and Toinon. Toinon was even more avaricious than her husband. They had two children, one boy and one girl, who suffered greatly due to their parents' greed and selfishness, but they were obedient and loving and so they went on in life without complaining. The boy, Jean, was twelve, the girl, Jeannette, was younger than him.
Since Jacques and Toinon hated spending money for their children, they decided to abandon them in the woods. The mother took them in the woods to gather dead wood, planning to abandon them there, so that the wolf might eat them at night. The children called their mother everywhere once they realized they were alone, to no avail. They cried and tried to find back their way, failing at this too. Jeannette told her brother to climb on a tree, to see if he could find anything. He climbed but only saw branches ; his sister told him to climb higher, but he still only saw "the green branches of the forest", she told him a third time to climb higher, and this time he saw two houses. One white, one red. Jeannette was asked by her brother which house they should go towards - and the girl chose the red house because it was "the prettiest". Spoiler: This was the wrong choice.
Knocking at the red house, they met a woman "who was as tall and strong as a man". The wife accepted to let them in, but told them to hide, because her husband was "wicked" and would eat them. She hid them as best as she could, but her husband smelled "a Christian's smell" and discovered the children. He then beat up his wife as a punishment. Something of importance: the husband is the devil. Now, it isn't the actual religious devil of Christianity, but the folkloric devil. In French fairytales of the folkloric kind, a lot of times you'll find the "devil" as an antagonist, but actually replacing what is commonly known as an ogre or a giant. Which is why you find tons of stories about man-eating, giant devils killed by heroes: this is just a Christianization of the old tales of giants and ogres. In this precise case, the devil is clearly an ogre by another name.
When the devil took Jean by the hand, he perceived that he was skinny, so he locked him up in a little stable, so that he might be fattened up - and once he is fat enough, he shall be killed. As for Jeannette, she became the servant of the household, and she regularly fed her brother (Trivia: there is an inconsistency here, as the opening of the tale mentions Jean is the oldest, but here it is said he is the "little brother" of Jeannette). Since the devil was too big/too large to enter in the stable, he couldn't check by himself Jean's atness. After a few days of fattening, he asked Jeannette to cut the tip of her brother's little finger, and to bring it to him. Jeannette rather cut the tail of a rat, and the devil was fooled into believing Jean was too skinny.
Some times later he asked again for a piece of Jean's finger, and Jeannette brought another rat tail. But the third time, the devil realized it was a rat's tail - so he placed his own hand within the stable and took Jean out of it, realizing he was fat eough to be eaten. He prepared a trestel to bleed Jean, but then decided to do a promenade before cooking. He told his wife to watch over Jean - and especially keep an eye on Jeannette, that he greatly mistrusted. However the devil's wife got drunk and sleepy. Jeannette opened the door to the pigs stable in which Jean was imprisoned [Note: we have a confirmation here of the "pigification" of the boy, already hinted by the fact that the devil wanted to bleed Jean, the same way farmers bled pigs]. Jeannette than pretended not knowing how to tie Jean to the trestle. The devil's wife, finding her stupid, placed her body onto the trestle to show her - Jean promptly tied her up, and cut off her neck. The children then took the devil's gold and silver, and fled with his horse-drawn carriage.
When the devil came back, and found his beheaded wife and the pig-stable empty, and his carriage missing, he understood what had happened. He wandered through the area searching for the children, and met a plowman. The devil asked him in a rhyme: "Vous n'avez pas vu Jean, Jeannette/ Ma charrette, / Mon cheval rouge et mon cheval blanc, / Couvert d'or et d'argent?". In English: "Have you seen Jean, Jeannette / My carriage / My red horse and my white horse / Covered in gold and silver?". The plowman however understands that the devil is saying he is badly plowing his field - and the devil has to clear up the misunderstanding before finally hearing the plowman didn't saw anything.
The devil later met a shepherd and asked him the rhyme again, but the shepherd understood that the devil was telling him his dog was not barking enough. So after the shepherd told his dog to bark after the devil, the devil had to repeat himself once again, and once more the shepherd saw nothing. The devil finally reached a river where washer-woman were working. He asked them the rhyme, the washer-women understood that the devil was telling them "You are not beating up the cloth enough", and once again he had to repeat himself to be understood. This time the washerwomen understood, and told the devil the kids had crossed the river with their carriage. But there was no bridge, and the devil complained about it. One of the washer-women understood that it was the devil they were talking to, and she informed her companions, telling them they should play some "tricks" to him.
What the washerwomen did was ask the devil to let his hair being cut, so that the women could make a bridge out of it. The devil agreed, and once his hair was cut, they elongated themselves and formed a bridge over the river - that was held by the washerwomen. But once the devil was in the middle of the bridge, they let go of the bridge, which fell in the water with the devil - and the devil drowned. The washerwomen then went to Jean and Jeannette (who had returned home), and informed them that the devil had drowned. [Note: Yes they seem to be some fairy, witchy, washerwomen, though the text doesn't say anything beyond them just being badass washerwomen].
Jean and Jeannette made their parents rich, and "everybody was happy". The moral of the story is apparently "One must be good for their parents, even when they were bad for their children". A... very debtable and questionable moral. The story ends with : "Night came, the rooster sang, and the tale ended."
Tumblr media
To conclude this post, I will leave one final variation of the Hansel and Gretel story, that was name-dropped by the Wikipedia article about the fairytale: the Moravian fairytale "Old Grule". Collected in 1899 by Marie Kosch, the fascinating thing with this story is that it clearly takes after the German version created/collected by the brothers Grimm - for example, having the two sibling-protagonists being named "Gretel and Hans".
In this story, Gretel and Hans are naughty, disobedient children who are often beaten by their parents. One day, the two wanted to go pick strawberries in the woods, but their mother told them no, because a thunderstorm was approaching. The children being disobedient, they still went in the woods - and ended up caught in the dreadful storm (hail, rain, branch-breaking winds, thunder and lightning). They hid in a rocky cave and when the storm died own, they realized they were completely lost. [Note: It is fascinating how the beginning of this tale is the very reverse of "The Cabin with the Cheese Roof"]. As night fell, Gretel urged Hans to climb to the top of a tree, and from there he saw a light they followed.
The light led to a little cottage made of gingerbread, with a marzipan roof. [Note: Given this story is ulterior to the Grimm's H&G, we see here clearly how the idea of gingerbread and marzipan settled itself in popular imagination] The children took a ladder lying narby and climbed on the roof to eat the marzipan. The inhabitant of the house was about to go to bed when she heard the noises: she was a witch named Grule who loved to eat children. Running outside, she said with a deep voice "Who is robbing my house?" and Gretel answered "The wind, the wind" with a soft voice. The witch, satisfied, went to bed... But as the moon rose up, the witch noticed a large hole in her roof, and poking from it a child's head. So she quickly captured the two children on her roof, and locked them up in a chicken coop, enraged that they were ruining her house.
For a few days she fed the children only the best foods (cakes, sweets, fruits) to fatten them up so they could make a good roast. When it came time to check if they were fat enough, she took a knife and asked Gretel to stick out her finger - but she held out her apron's string, and as the witch cut it she said "Skinny, skinny". Same thing with Hans who gave his trouser's string. The witch, understanding that her meals of good things didn't work, switched to a diet of exclusively flour porridge. And the children grew so tired of eating flour porridge every day they didn't trick the witch the next time she came ith her knife: each time they gave their finger for her to cut into it, and as she saw one drop of blood come out from each child's finger she said "Fat, fat".
The witch went to her kitche, and the narrator describes how she prepares her oven: she makes a fire in the oven, when it dies out she takes a wooden crook to spread the coals over the entie surface of the oven, she then uses a wet straw whisk to sweep the coals in front of the oven, and then takes them out. Going to the chicken coop, she took the children, claimed she had some baked plums in her oven, and needed the kids to retrieve them for her. The kid gladly agreed, hoping they could eat the plums instead of the flour porridge. The witch went to fetch a baker's peel (what I called an "oven's shovel before) and meanwhile Gretel looked into the oven, seeing no plum at all. Understanding what the witch tried to do, Gretel played dumb and pretended not knowing how to sit on the peel, falling onto the ground every time she tried. Old Grule gathered her skirts and sat on the peel, only for the kids to burn her to death in her oven.
They returned to their parents, who were happy to see them alive - because they thought the children were dead. But the two kids still received a good beating because they had disobeyed their parents. The end.
As you can see this story is... WEIRD. There is definitively something meant to be dark humor and almost a parody of the original with how the kids are naughty brats, who enjoy being fattened up, and ultimately are not morally good heroes. In fact, the two children stay blissfully unaware of the witch's true intentions until the very end: the reason they trick the witch at first is because they actually wanted to keep eating sweets, cakes and fruits all day long, not knowing they were to be cooked later! Similarly, the whole "the witch notices a big hole in her roof" seems almost like a joke - showing how from the German story collected and spread across Europe by the Grimm, a sort of more down-to-earth, humoristic tone was added typical of many "peasant versions" of fairytales, that usually involve more jokes and like to point out a tale's own absurdity or moral ambiguity.

my old/beautiful book collection
the pretty books shelves
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my Tolkien collection
Tumblr media
vintage fiction
Tumblr media
antique and vintage Bible study books
Tumblr media
I have very few truly old books, but more than I remembered are from the early 20th century. List of titles and more details under the cut
pretty books shelves
Reader’s Digest editions: Little Women (Alcott), Tales from the Arabian Nights, Emma & Pride and Prejudice (Austen), Jane Eyre (Brontë), The Last of the Mohicans (Cooper), The Adventures of Robin Hood (Creswick), Two Years Before the Mast (Dana), David Copperfield, Oliver Twist & A Tale of Two Cities (Dickens), The Robe (Douglas), The Adventures, The Further Adventures, The Memoirs, & The Return of Sherlock Holmes (Doyle), A Passage to India (Forster), The House of the Seven Gables, The Scarlet Letter & Twice-Told Tales (Hawthorne), Kim (Kipling), The Sea Wolf (London), The Song of Hiawatha and other poems (Longfellow), Anne of Green Gables (Montgomery), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Smith), Kidnapped (Stevenson), Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Stowe), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court & Innocents Abroad (Twain), A Journey to the Centre of the Earth & Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Verne)
The Confessions of Saint Augustine—E. B. Pusey translation, Franklin Library edition. This was a Christmas gift from my parents and @bluesidedown has the same one
The Pilgrim’s Progress (Bunyan)—CBN University Press Christian Classics. I don’t actually remember where I got this one but most likely from my dad.
Through the Looking Glass (Carroll)—Heritage Press edition with slipcover and illustrations by John Tenniel. Again, probably from my dad but not 100% sure (he gives me a LOT of books).
The Complete Canterbury Tales (Chaucer)—F. H. Hill translation, Arcturus books with slipcover and illustrations by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. Another Christmas gift where Blue and I got matching copies from our parents.
Heretics & Orthodoxy (Chesterton)—Hendrickson Christian Classics. Again, a Christmas gift from my parents.
Nemesis & The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side (Christie)—Heron Books. Another one I can’t remember the origin of.
The Prairie (Cooper)—Easton Press collector’s edition. From my parents, Christmas this year. This is pretty much the handsomest book I own.
Great Expectations (Dickens)—Chatham River Press. Based on the inscription on the flyleaf this belonged to my dad first. Probably I got it as a gift or in his thinning of his collection.
The Scarlet Pimpernel (Orczy)—International Collector’s Library. Another of unknown origin.
Quo Vadis (Sienkiewicz)—International Collector’s Library. It amuses me that in organizing these books alphabetical by author’s last name, these two matching editions still ended up side by side.
Treasure Island (Stevenson)—Children’s Classics, illustrated by Milo Winter.
Treasure Island–Prince Otto–Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde–Kidnapped–The Black Arrow–The Master of Ballantrae–David Balfour (Stevenson)—Canterbury Classics omnibus. I actually have most of these in other editions, but I keep this for the ones I don’t have elsewhere.....and keep the other editions too because I am a book-dragon.
The Prince and the Pauper (Twain)—Portland House Illustrated Classics, illustrated by Franklin Booth. Not sure where I got this one.
The Greek Myths (Graves)—Folio Society, two volumes in slipcover. These were a Christmas gift from my parents a couple years ago, because I collect fairy tales and folk tales and suchlike.
Tolkien
These are mostly newer Houghton Mifflin or HarperCollins editions. The Silmarillion has Ted Naismith illustrations; Children of Húrin has Alan Lee illustrations, as do the covers of LotR; The Hobbit and LotR have Tolkien’s original illustrations and maps, and Roverandom has cover art by him as well; and Bilbo’s Last Song, Farmer Giles of Ham, The Adventures of Tom Bombadill, and Smith of Wooton Major are all illustrated by Pauline Baynes.
vintage fiction (top down, left column first)
Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur—Norwood Press, 1911
Stalky & Co. (Kipling)—Macmillan and Co, 1927. Completely leatherbound with gilt spine and seal on the front cover
The Master of Ballantrae & The Black Arrow (Stevenson)—Everyman’s Library, 1938
Popular Fairy Tales (Andersen)—Blackie and Son. No date, but google tells me it’s from sometime in the 30s/40s/50s based on the binding style
Jo’s Boys (Alcott)—The Children’s Press, 1965
Around the World in Eighty Days (Verne)—Dean and Son. No date, but I’m guessing mid-twentieth century
Three Cheers Secret Seven (Blyton)—Brockhampton Press, 1960
The Burgess Animal Book for Children—Little, Brown, and Company. Copyright 1948, though likely printed later
At the Back of the North Wind (MacDonald), The Little Lame Prince (Mulock), King Arthur and his Knights (Frith), All the Mowgli Stories (Kipling)—Junior Deluxe Edtions. Illustrations are copyright 1956, no print dates
The Door in the Wall (de Angeli)—Doubleday. Copyright 1949, no print date
Freckles (Porter)—Grosset & Dunlap, 1916. Very beat up and mostly held together by packing tape on the spine
The Call of the Wild (London)—Grosset & Dunlap, 1910. It has a very faded picture glued to the front cover as part of the original binding, as well as illustrations throughout. Quite worn, with many pages about to or falling out
Kilmeny of the Orchard (Montgomery)—Ryerson, 1947. This was actually printed before the Anne series was entirely published, as the list of Montgomery’s works in the front only includes the first three books in the series
Captains Courageous (Kipling)—Thrushwood Books. Date uncertain, but google tells me probably 1950s
Heidi (Spyri)—Collins, 1958. While this did originally belong to my dad, it’s the copy I read as a kid and has been on my shelf for a long time
The Mark of the Horse Lord (Sutcliff)—Oxford University Press, 1965. I learned in making this list that my copy is probably a first edition, albeit rather beat up from being a school library copy.
Warrior Scarlet (Sutcliff)—Oxford University Press, 1966. I also have a 1973 copy that still has its dust jacket.
Robinson Crusoe (Defoe)—Dent/Dutton, 1966. A beloved favourite copy that I read many times
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Verne)—Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1953. Another beloved copy that I read many times, I flatly refuse to part with this one despite having a less faded and beat-up edition because 1) I am dreadfully sentimental and 2) the illustrations in this edition are much better than in the RD edition.
King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table (Lanier)—Illustrated Junior LIbrary. Illustrations copyright 1950, no print date
antique and vintage Bible study books
Young’s Analytical Concordance—per a pencil note on the title page this was published circa. 1937, and it definitely looks the part
The Bible as History in Pictures (Keller)—Published in 1964, this is definitely outdated in terms of archaeological evidence of Bible events but it still fascinates me to see
The New English Bible: New Testament—as a Library Edition, I don’t think this strictly counts as a first edition, but it is definitely an early edition as it was printed in 1961 when the NT translation was completed (OT translation of this version wasn’t completed until 1970)
Exposition of Genesis (Leupold)—Wartburg Press, 1942
The Epistle to the Hebrews (Brown)—Banner of Truth, 1961
Luke the Physician (Ramsay)—Baker Book House, 1956
The Gospel in Ezekiel (Guthrie)—Adam and Charles Black, 1857 (or MDCCCLVII if you prefer). This is the oldest book I own, and while is is now quite beat up - the spine is 80% tape and the front cover has come off completely and been replaced with cardboard - I can tell it was a very handsome book when it was new. The spine is bound in dark blue and brown leather, with gilt lettering and decoration, and the edges of the pages have beautiful multicolour marbling on them.

Some post Omega-4 relay Shakarian content, just because
[...]
“Garrus is requesting entry to your cabin, Commander.”
Her hands stopped moving on the cover, and she folded both in her lap.
“Thanks, EDI. Let him in.”
She wasn’t sure why she had expected him to show up in his armor, caked with Collectors blood as it was, but somehow she was surprised to see him in his informal civvies. He walked over to the bed in silence and sat beside her. He looked about as tired as she felt.
“Uh.” He was staring at the floor. “I really thought this time was gonna be the one.”
“Yeah. You and me both.”
Stillness settled into the cabin, both of them breathing in silence. Further up, Shepard’s fish swam placidly in the tank, and she started following the ever-soothing path of her Prejek Paddle.
Honestly, what a great way to spend both her borrowed time and the Illusive Man’s money. When he had ordered scientists to bully life back into Commander Shepard of the Alliance Navy, the first human Spectre, he probably hadn’t expected she would use that life to gleefully spend his credits on exotic fish and space hamsters. To be fair, he probably also hadn’t expected she’d go rogue, or that she’d turn the Normandy’s entire crew against him, his own loyal employees included.
Actually, thinking about it, Shepard wasn’t sure what he had expected. Maybe that she’d die in a blaze of glory, defeating the Collectors and helpfully removing herself from the equation before she could create any problems.
Too bad, she thought as her fish did a flip in the middle of the tank. Dying for the cause is so 2183.
“Hey, maybe you’re my lucky charm.”
Garrus turned to look at her, puzzled.
“I mean, think about it—I’ve never died when you were around. Which is more than I can say for… uh. Well, a number of people.”
She usually prided herself on having become quite good at reading turian expressions, but she wasn’t sure what Garrus was doing with his face right then. He seemed stuck somewhere between a grimace and reluctant amusement, somehow.
“Shepard,” he drawled in the end, shaking his head. “We just did something verifiably insane and lived to tell the tale. Could we leave the trip down memory lane for another time?” His tone turned as dry as his stare. “Not that I don’t love reminiscing about the good old days of your demise.”
