which i'm all for that, honestly, but also — i know how some can be with spoilers as well. it's a surprise how i wasn't spoiled just finishing ❛ outer banks ❜ maybe a month after the newest season came out as i had a moment. oh — love a good theory about what's to happen next in a show, shows the investment. you're not wrong — my husband once read a fanfic about our movie together and just raved to me about how well written it was as i mildly judged him for reading fanficiton. i am as well and i highly recommend ❛ heartstopper ❜ — such a good show.

take your time, if anything it'll leave you with more episode to burn through once you do, which is always nice. it definitely is, especially all the theories about what's gonna happen next-- i swear, some of them could be writers themselves. i'm waiting on the last season for outer banks, but i have not seen heartstopper yet and i deeply regret that. all my friends talk about it so much, i gotta put that on my watchlist.

COMPANION (2025)

A very and clean movie (other than the blood). We love Sophie Thatcher from Yellowjackets and Jack Quaid from The Boys and they both are phenomenal in this. Harvey Guillén is also a fan favorite from What We Do In The Shadows and I adore him in this as well. Clever and fun.

Trigger Warning Suicide

Iris tells us that her very best days were the day she met Josh and then the day she killed him and then we are thrown into the story. We meet Iris, she is beautiful, she meets Josh, he is charming, and wham, love at first sight. Flash forward to the two of them going on a trip together to meet Josh’s friends. They all meet in a very posh lake house and Iris is rather nervous to make a good impression so Josh reminds her to Smile. They all share a glorious dinner together and revel in each other's company. Iris has trouble getting Josh’s friend Kat to like her though and she isn’t sure why, Kat’s boyfriend Sergey is creepy in his own rights too so things are complicated. Iris tries to ignore her suspicions and they all drink and dance the night away.

The next morning Josh is too hungover to go hang out by the lake like he said he wanted to do and basically commands Iris to go enjoy her time here (The Rental, anyone?). When Iris arrives at the lake, who joins her but Sergey and he makes her very uncomfortable right away so she tries to leave but he pressures her to stay. In just a few moments we cut to Iris covered in blood with a knife telling the rest of the gang that she had to do it because Sergey was forcing himself on her and then when she refused he tried to strangle her. We know this is the truth because we see the flashback but also we learn seconds later that Iris cannot lie because she is a ROBOT. Josh puts her to sleep and they tie her up so she can’t “hurt anyone else” and when Josh wakes her up she is so confused. Josh admits she is a Companion robot and that she isn’t a real human being.

Obviously shocked, Iris at first denies being a robot but Josh provides solid evidence that she is one. Accepting it, Iris asks if she can still stay with Josh because she loves him but he knows that isn’t going to happen, the police are going to come take this “dangerous bot” away. Iris escapes and runs into the woods and then Josh and Kat come clean to the other friend, Eli, about what is happening. They purposely messed with Iris’ coding to make her be able to kill and sent Sergey out there because they knew he would do something fucked up and she would feel the need to defend herself if given a knife. Eli is furious but then he finds out about the money involved and demands it be split four (4) ways, between Josh, Kat, Eli, and his boyfriend Patrick but, newsflash, Patrick is also a bot! Eli doesn’t want Patrick to know that though. Either way they need to go find Iris who is now in the woods with Josh’s cellphone which also controls her and now Iris can disable voice controls and boost her intelligence. 

With her intelligence at 100%, Iris realizes she needs to make it back to the house and get a car to take her home but on the way back she runs into Eli and Patrick. She overhears a beautiful conversation they have in which Patrick admits he knows that he is a robot but doesn’t care as long as Eli is with him and Eli admits that he loves Patrick! It is a beautiful day for love! Right? Wrong! Because then Eli tussles with Iris and the gun goes off and Eli dies. Fucking sad. I loved Eli, he's Guillermo from What We Do In The Shadows and I love him here, so there. But now everyone is really on the “kill Iris” train and she barely makes it to the car. She makes it maybe a block before Josh reports his car stolen and it is automatically shut down (damn future cars) and Iris is LOCKED INSIDE (terrifying). She breaks out with her bare feet (thank goodness Josh already started breaking the window) but there is a cop who is there and questioning her. She switches to German (since she cannot lie, so she tells him the truth, just Auf Deutsch) but it doesn’t matter because Josh has made Patrick imprint on him and edited his coding so Patrick can now kill. Patrick swoops in and disposes of the police officer then shuts Iris down and brings her back to his new love, Josh. 

Kat is done with the whole thing and doesn’t think about how leaving might be the last thing she ever tries to do with Patrick's aggression turned up to 100 so she tries to leave and instead gets killed. Whomp whomp. Josh has a very special and angry dinner with Iris, he turns her intelligence down to 0 because she says something mean and clever (what a baby) then he makes her burn her own hand even though she says she feels the pain. This is the same guy who said he would be a better boyfriend about an hour ago. What a schmuck. For his grand finale he makes Iris put a bullet through her head. Neat trick but is that where her brain is? Nope! The tech guys arrive to claim her and confirm that her components are all intact and they will be able to see the VIDEO footage from her no problem. Except, big problem for Josh who lied about every little thing that happened. SO, Patrick gets sent out to kill the tech boys but he only gets to one (1) of them before Iris reboots and saves the second tech nerd from Patrick, who, upon learning his true love was killed and the memories of Eli were stolen from him, kills himself.

Finally the showdown between Iris and Josh. Reminder, Iris is a robot, but she isn’t particularly stronger or faster, in fact she is petite and Josh is tall and strong. She is getting her ass kicked and it almost looks like she is going to die. But at the very last second she sends the very fancy corkscrew through his temple. It is gnarly to tell the truth but I’d rather it be him than her. Oh, and also the tech nerd made her a completely free robot so she has power over all her abilities and stuff like throwing her voice and languages which is nice I guess. In the shower she removes her charred skin and lets her robot hand show. During the credits she passes what obviously is a bot in a car with a man who is talking her ear off, Iris waves with her robo-arm , causing a bit of commotion in the other car. A happy ending.

Omg I've been wanting to ask you if you've seen Heretic! I became obsessed as soon as I saw it, recommending it to all my friends like a missionary 😅 I've seen it twice and it gives you so much to think about; the three main performances are brilliant, the story is unpredictable and the psychological horror is so well done! Sister Paxton is also one of my new favourite characters from anything; I just think she's wonderful. I have so many thoughts I should probably make my own post b/c I could go on and on 😅

On a more superficial note, I must ask... Do you have a crush on Mr Reed? (Should I be embarrassed to admit that it's the first time I've ever found Hugh Grant hot, after a lifetime of having no opinion on him and barely registering his presence in films? I feel like I've finally awoken)

hell YEAHHHH all the love for Heretic, i was completely blown away!!!! what a masterpiece of a movie, holy shit - i couldn't agree with you more. Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher AND Chloe East all gave such tremendous performances - those first thirty minutes were some of the most tense and uncomfortable exchanges i've ever seen!!! so tightly written and had as many twists and turns as Mr Reed's fortress-like home...you keep on recommending this movie to everyone, i certainly will be too 🙈💖 BEFORE I GO INTO SPOILERS AND HEAVY RELIGIOUS/ATHEISTIC/PERSONAL DISCUSSION UNDER THE CUT: although i am not presently blorboing Mr Reed, my partner is down so astronomically bad i thought they were going to explode in the theatre 😂💖 i totally understand where y'all are coming from, and if spreading the 'gorgeous old man Hugh Grant appeals to your religious trauma and daddy kinks at the same time' propaganda, then so be it!!! here, hot grandpa be upon ye!! (come back to me in 3-5 business days, maybe my opinion will have evolved 😉)

so for context: when i was a child, like. ages 7-14, i was a militant atheist. i was raised in a very lax Christian household, but i fell down the rabbit hole of Richard Dawkins-esque 'reasonable' takes on religion via books and online circles that i equated with being intellectually superior. in retrospect i'm horrified by what a nasty, ignorant person it made me, and am very lucky to have had good religious figures in my life to gently ease me out of that (ironically) cult-like mentality. i'd argue that atheism, theism, theological debates and scientific ideas about the nature of reality constituted a special interest for me for a good chunk of my life...so this movie really scratched a long-forgotten itch 🙈🙈🙈 the thing about Heretic was how equal its messaging was. going in, you'd assume Mr Reed could've been some spurned apostate punishing missionaries for daring to have unshaken, unproven faith. but instead, we see something else: Mr Reed, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton battling and even collaborating in trying to discover the truth of their respective (including lack of) faiths. that final scene with Sister Paxton hallucinating the butterfly rammed it home: does it really matter whether religion is correct or not? isn't it enough that faith provides comfort and meaning, even if we're wrong when we leave this mortal coil? i think as an ex-militant atheist i find Mr Reed horribly relatable. the way he made himself into this self-styled god by deeming 'control' to be the structure of all religion and using it to act on his own selfish desires reminds me so much of the figureheads of the atheism movement...i know that Heretic was in part inspired by Contact (1997), based on the book by Carl Sagan, which explores the implications for humanity if we made contact with extraterrestial life. the scientific language which people in the atheism community used to dress up intolerance and personal biases is just as flawed as the religion they were criticising. Mr Reed dazzles as an "intellectual", but he's no more informed than either of the Sisters. the way this movie skilfully portrays all parties as reasonable, informed, relatable people all trying to seek meaning is magnificent. it would have been so easy to make either side into a scapegoat: to make an anti-religious movie, or an anti-atheism movie, or even to turn around and call us all idiots for thinking about religion, but it doesn't. it leaves us with this off-kilter but honest message: we don't know, and that's okay, as long as it matters to you. that's why i agree with you on Sister Paxton being such an amazing character: regardless of Mr Reed's theories (or hypotheses 😉) he was unable to subjugate her. what a fucking champ

thank you ! it can be, yes and i enjoyed my lowkey celebration for it. it was, i had the best time with just everyone i love and appreciate. i think it's definitely the best way as i get the party bug out with hollywood after parties, really — or thanks to friends and what they do for their birthdays or just invite me out to. live shows are nice when you get the chance to see them, i can agree with that for sure.

first off, happy birthday! the big 2-1 is a big deal, i'm glad you were able to spend it around your loved ones. i bet that celebration was amazing. personally, that's how i like to have my own, nothing like being surrounded with ones you love the most. besides that, i do enjoy enjoy live shows, even though i can't enjoy as much in completely ambiguity but it's not so bad.

This is a more general observation and not dub-specific, but I love how the pool scene is obviously full of sexual innuendo but in a completely insane Laura Lee context where her takeaway from the hot guy saving her is "become more religious". Obviously Laura Lee comes across as a lesbian, but unlike with Some characters that genuinely wasn't intentional on anyone's part except possibly Courtney Eaton's, so the intent there is just...Laura Lee's reaction to attraction to someone is "make it about Jesus". Hilarious stuff.

a) gwyneth veio ao mundo um mês e meio antes do previsto, anos depois de sage, sua irmã mais velha. a caçula dos lewis cresceu rodeada de gente grande — de tios que beliscavam as suas bochechas e primos que roubavam seus doces e a excluíam das brincadeiras nos almoços de domingo; gwen cresceu brincando sozinha, dublando diálogos entre bichos de pelúcia herdados e com o nariz enfiado nos livros da sessão proibida da biblioteca de seus pais. os momentos mais alegres de seus dias se davam às vezes na sala de música, às vezes nos treinos de esgrima, mas contavam sempre com a presença da sua irmã. sage era a sua pessoa favorita: sua protetora, sua heroína. era a quem gwen recorria quando tiravam sarro das suas roupas surradas, dos seus cabelos desgrenhados, ou quando a colocavam apelidos maldosos. 

b) perdê-la para exspiravit foi horrível, e não somente porque a perseguição a ela e ao resto de sua família se intensificou. a saída da sua irmã de casa também coincidiu com o despertar tardio da audição apurada para fantasmas da caçula, que não tinha ninguém com quem compartilhar as dúvidas e as novas descobertas. manteve o seu dom em segredo da família e principalmente do mundo fora das paredes do casarão vitoriano dos lewis, na esperança de viver uma vida normal. já bastava ser um deles, dos esquisitões da tranquil vale; ouvir fantasmas era a última coisa que ela queria. gwyneth passou a adolescência tentando ao máximo se desvincular da imagem da sua família: enterrou no fundo de um baú sua coleção de insetos mortos, os livros sobre astrologia e as espadas; passou a andar com o pessoal errado e, de repente, o fato de gwen ser uma lewis passou a ser a coisa menos interessante sobre ela. só se falava dos seus desenhos chulos estampados nos muros bairro afora, da sua banda, e das loucuras que tinha feito na última festa. ela estava a salvo.

c) a sua matrícula em exspiravit foi a última tentativa de elsie e edgar de tentar ajudar a colocar a vida de gwen nos eixos: talvez estando perto da irmã mais velha ela resolveria largar o estilo de vida nada saudável que adquirira nos últimos anos da adolescência para se tornar mais como ela, a primogênita, a filha perfeita… a irmã que a abandonara. a sua matrícula em exspiravit iria, sobretudo, ajudá-la a lidar com o dom que havia nela se manifestado, descoberto recente e acidentalmente pelos seus pais para o seu doce infortúnio. foi somente depois de muita insistência e uma quase prisão que ela aceitou o seu destino, mas demorará para ela perceber que ela está exatamente onde deveria.  

PERSONALIDADE

gwen é a definição ambulante de "rebelde sem causa" — poderia muito bem ter saído de qualquer filme adolescente dos anos noventa ou de uma edição de metal hurlant. os clichês não param por aí: ela é guitarrista de uma banda de punk rock feminina chamada "boo you, wh*re!", o que explica (mas não justifica) a sua personalidade um tanto quanto... intensa. desconfiada feito um cão de guarda, ela tem dificuldade em confiar nas pessoas e, portanto, de fazer amizades; as poucas que ela têm, porém, ela guarda bem próximas ao coração. apesar da casca grossa, ela é a primeira pessoa a colocar a mão no fogo pelas coisas em que ela acredita, bem como pelas pessoas que ela ama, os fracos e os oprimidos.
