COMPANION (2025)

A very and clean movie (other than the blood). We love Sophie Thatcher from Yellowjackets and Jack Quaid from The Boys and they both are phenomenal in this. Harvey Guilln is also a fan favorite from What We Do In The Shadows and I adore him in this as well. Clever and fun.
⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
Trigger Warning Suicide

Iris tells us that her very best days were the day she met Josh and then the day she killed him and then we are thrown into the story. We meet Iris, she is beautiful, she meets Josh, he is charming, and wham, love at first sight. Flash forward to the two of them going on a trip together to meet Josh’s friends. They all meet in a very posh lake house and Iris is rather nervous to make a good impression so Josh reminds her to Smile. They all share a glorious dinner together and revel in each other's company. Iris has trouble getting Josh’s friend Kat to like her though and she isn’t sure why, Kat’s boyfriend Sergey is creepy in his own rights too so things are complicated. Iris tries to ignore her suspicions and they all drink and dance the night away.

The next morning Josh is too hungover to go hang out by the lake like he said he wanted to do and basically commands Iris to go enjoy her time here (The Rental, anyone?). When Iris arrives at the lake, who joins her but Sergey and he makes her very uncomfortable right away so she tries to leave but he pressures her to stay. In just a few moments we cut to Iris covered in blood with a knife telling the rest of the gang that she had to do it because Sergey was forcing himself on her and then when she refused he tried to strangle her. We know this is the truth because we see the flashback but also we learn seconds later that Iris cannot lie because she is a ROBOT. Josh puts her to sleep and they tie her up so she can’t “hurt anyone else” and when Josh wakes her up she is so confused. Josh admits she is a Companion robot and that she isn’t a real human being.

Obviously shocked, Iris at first denies being a robot but Josh provides solid evidence that she is one. Accepting it, Iris asks if she can still stay with Josh because she loves him but he knows that isn’t going to happen, the police are going to come take this “dangerous bot” away. Iris escapes and runs into the woods and then Josh and Kat come clean to the other friend, Eli, about what is happening. They purposely messed with Iris’ coding to make her be able to kill and sent Sergey out there because they knew he would do something fucked up and she would feel the need to defend herself if given a knife. Eli is furious but then he finds out about the money involved and demands it be split four (4) ways, between Josh, Kat, Eli, and his boyfriend Patrick but, newsflash, Patrick is also a bot! Eli doesn’t want Patrick to know that though. Either way they need to go find Iris who is now in the woods with Josh’s cellphone which also controls her and now Iris can disable voice controls and boost her intelligence.

With her intelligence at 100%, Iris realizes she needs to make it back to the house and get a car to take her home but on the way back she runs into Eli and Patrick. She overhears a beautiful conversation they have in which Patrick admits he knows that he is a robot but doesn’t care as long as Eli is with him and Eli admits that he loves Patrick! It is a beautiful day for love! Right? Wrong! Because then Eli tussles with Iris and the gun goes off and Eli dies. Fucking sad. I loved Eli, he's Guillermo from What We Do In The Shadows and I love him here, so there. But now everyone is really on the “kill Iris” train and she barely makes it to the car. She makes it maybe a block before Josh reports his car stolen and it is automatically shut down (damn future cars) and Iris is LOCKED INSIDE (terrifying). She breaks out with her bare feet (thank goodness Josh already started breaking the window) but there is a cop who is there and questioning her. She switches to German (since she cannot lie, so she tells him the truth, just Auf Deutsch) but it doesn’t matter because Josh has made Patrick imprint on him and edited his coding so Patrick can now kill. Patrick swoops in and disposes of the police officer then shuts Iris down and brings her back to his new love, Josh.

Kat is done with the whole thing and doesn’t think about how leaving might be the last thing she ever tries to do with Patrick's aggression turned up to 100 so she tries to leave and instead gets killed. Whomp whomp. Josh has a very special and angry dinner with Iris, he turns her intelligence down to 0 because she says something mean and clever (what a baby) then he makes her burn her own hand even though she says she feels the pain. This is the same guy who said he would be a better boyfriend about an hour ago. What a schmuck. For his grand finale he makes Iris put a bullet through her head. Neat trick but is that where her brain is? Nope! The tech guys arrive to claim her and confirm that her components are all intact and they will be able to see the VIDEO footage from her no problem. Except, big problem for Josh who lied about every little thing that happened. SO, Patrick gets sent out to kill the tech boys but he only gets to one (1) of them before Iris reboots and saves the second tech nerd from Patrick, who, upon learning his true love was killed and the memories of Eli were stolen from him, kills himself.

Finally the showdown between Iris and Josh. Reminder, Iris is a robot, but she isn’t particularly stronger or faster, in fact she is petite and Josh is tall and strong. She is getting her ass kicked and it almost looks like she is going to die. But at the very last second she sends the very fancy corkscrew through his temple. It is gnarly to tell the truth but I’d rather it be him than her. Oh, and also the tech nerd made her a completely free robot so she has power over all her abilities and stuff like throwing her voice and languages which is nice I guess. In the shower she removes her charred skin and lets her robot hand show. During the credits she passes what obviously is a bot in a car with a man who is talking her ear off, Iris waves with her robo-arm , causing a bit of commotion in the other car. A happy ending.

!!NEW FIC ALERT!!
I wanted to write a self-insert drabble for this amazing movie, and before I knew it I had over 3000 words sitting in front of me...
So I'm writing a series for the first time in nearly 10 years! (God help me-)
You can read the first chapter of "Alexa, What's the Weather?" here! I'm interested in where this story will end up and hope you join me for the journey :)
Summary:
Iris has been on the road for nearly a month at this point, leaving behind the chaos of Sergei’s mansion to experience the world on her own terms. Coming across other companion bots on her journey became something routine, the novelty of flashing the exposed mechanics of her right hand to unsuspecting companions and leaving them to deal with their collapsing worldview having lost its edge. This didn’t mean, however, that Iris had given up her goal of achieving the autonomy for every Empathix companion currently active.
What her higher intelligence functions could have never predicted was the jail-broken bot that would enter her life seemingly out of nowhere.
And just kept. On. Showing up.
(Or: What happens when the hunch you've had for who-knows-how-long, that something isn't right, ends up being confirmed?)
#companion movie#companion 2025#self insert#Iris x reader#companion self insert#companion x reader#fanfiction#sophie tatcher#wlw#this is Out of my Comfort Zone™ but the only way to get better is through peer review T-T#please share your thoughts/critiques! i love dialogue and comments <3#my writing#fic writing

Things that irritated me about A Witch's Ally: Building A Magical Relationship With Animal Familiars & Companions by Dodie Graham McKay:
despite how good it was going until that point, the shoe finally dropped on page 50 with some Lilith bullshit (including the debunked Sumerian relief misinformation)
I am redacting a point for numerous editing mistakes
and the misuse of "shaman" in witchcraft spaces is still very apparent in this book
Things I liked about the book:
there was a decent disclaimer at the start
Kelden, who wrote the foreword, seems to know their shit and gave in-text citations (which I adore)
the introduction gives background on the author for this book without taking forever
more importantly, the rest of the introduction gives an overview of the books parts and expectations
the author clearly defines what she means by pets, animal companions, animal familiars, and non-animal familiars from the get-go
there is a whole section about not using the term spirit animal followed by a section of alternatives that actually discusses the nuances of each word
the author uses they/them pronouns for a generic witch figure
there are in-text citations for nearly every historical claim
the author points out that most victims of the witch trials were likely not actual witches but instead drawing on what was either fed to them by their torturers or pop culture superstitions about witches at the time
the history section is incredibly thorough and nuanced
the author encourages an ethical approach to animal use/inclusion in magic without being overly-pushy, including an entire chapter on the legality and ethics of animal parts
there was also a great "respect animals" talk on page 58 and an anti-appropriation one on page 74, I just wish the latter had been more thorough
overall the book is incredibly practical, pragmatic, and common sense-driven
I had my coworker who uses essential oils fact-check the essential oils section and her verdict was that it looks good overall and checks out in my coworker's experiences and own research
greatly appreciate the mention of what's toxic for pets and the repeated stressing of the fact that just because something is natural, that doesn't mean it's safe
there's a realistic approach to spell consequences on pages 157-158 instead of an overexaggerated "a money spell will kill your relatives so you get your inheritance" bogeyman
incredibly thorough bibliography
In addition to that, I appreciated the animal keywords list on pages 54-55. I do not have the knowledge and experience required to verify the bone cleaning instructions in the animal parts chapter. And the death and mourning chapter tore me the fuck up.
Overall, 9/10 book, it's very good for being what it is.

I just saw Companion (2025) and here are my thoughts (spoiler heavy!)
I liked it a lot, basically. I know that's not very brainy but I'm currently running on three hours of sleep. But yeah I liked it. It was a cool reverse slasher. I haven't looked up any other reviews because I'm scared everyone else will hate it like they hated Joker 2 even though i loved it lol
I was so surprised when they revealed Patrick as a bot too. really wish Patrick had survived at the end. I feel like he was dealt a bad hand just like Iris, and deserved to make it out alive.
When Patrick described love as painful (and Iris had an expression that made me think she felt the same way), I thought the movie was insinuating that he felt trapped and angry, but could only emote love and joy. I thought the insinuation was that Iris and Patrick both never loved their owners (and there's something to be said about the fact that, even if Patrick really did love Eli, there would've been no way for him to meaningfully express consent because it would've been impossible to refuse) and they both deserved to team up, kill Josh and escape.
At the end, I was hoping Patrick would sit up in the backseat and he and Iris would have a new life together as freed robot besties.
#Oh and also when they first showed the corkscrew#I immediately thought “now that is a chekov's corkscrew if I've ever seen one”#companion#companion 2025#movies#movie review#baby's fiest movie review#first idk#sophia thatcher#jack quaid#lukas gage

I feel like people whose main complaint with Companion is the logic and word building behind the robots is kinda missing the forest for the trees. The presence of the robots is meant to feed into the themes of power dynamics in relationships, male entitlement, and honesty/trust in relationships both romantic and platonic. The hand-waving of how the Companions can feel emotions and pain and can cry are there because it's more about their relationships with their partners and not getting bogged down by the sci-fi details.
Companion is focused on the pathos, but if you want a sci-fi movie about relationships with artificial beings that moreso explores the ethics and logics of it, then I recommend both Ex Machina and the Black Mirror episode BRB (which both star Domnhall Gleeson which is kinda funny)
#dumb stuff#companion#companion 2025#companion movie#I've seen a few professional reviews on companion that scored it low because it doesn't go into how ai effects the world at large or w/e#and I'm reading it like.... bro that's not the point#like many others before it. the use of genre is to elevate and better explain the themes and criticize elements of society#just because they don't explain the geopolitical impact of ridiculously lifelike robots that can be sold to consumers doesn't make movie bad#does any of this make sense? i have a hard time putting thoughts to words and hope this makes sense#anyways watch companion lmao

🔍 Companion (2025) – The Truth About Transactional Relationships & Toxic Masculinity
🎬 New Video Analysis! I just released a deep-dive video on Companion (2025), analyzing how it critiques transactional relationships and power dynamics through the lens of Social Exchange Theory.
📺 Watch the full breakdown here 👇
youtube
This movie has sparked a lot of debate about toxic masculinity, but I argue it’s really about the commodification of relationships, not just gender.
Do you think Companion does a good job of portraying these themes? Do you think it was about TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS, regardless of gender? Let’s discuss! 💬👇

Finally got to watch Companion! This film is such a good analogy/represents for women. Not just for women too, just being in a relationship where you're being used and treated like an object. The fact that men would make 'companions' not just because they are lonely, but to hurt them and manipulate them, because there are guys out there that just enjoy seeing women in pain. And if you're thinking it's unrealistic, I mean it's fictional and dramatized, but I know that I had a relationship with a guy who made me feel robotic. Like I was just there for him. And maybe it was just me, but did nobody else get some icky pet name from an ex like 'beep boop'. Honestly love that disgusting, cringy detail. Sophie Thatcher did her job beautifully (like usual) and Jack Quaid was awesome with giving me that icky vibe, I think that was the point.

Companion ✅ 5/5. Coming from the barbarian creator, I thought this was gonna be scary as hell and it ended up being funny as shit. Great mix of sci-fi, thriller and comedy. Sophie Thatcher is such a good actress. Loved her in heretic last year too! Jack Quaid as usual delivers a great performance as well.
Lived up to the hype as one of my most anticipated films of the year. This was amazing.
I hate watching stuff where androids are abused though, if I’m blessed to see a world where we do live with robots like that I’d 100 percent be a robot activist 😭
