WHERE: eddison recreational park, early morning WHO: @valleyxrose & murph
Fig took off after the ball, running to nearly the very end of her incredibly long lead. Murph watched with a fond smile as she tackled her prey, her back end ungraciously toppling over her front at her abrupt stop. When she popped up again, half her face was brown with dirt, sticky from the morning dew.
Her tongue flopped out the side of her mouth as she ran back towards him, head held high and proud as she brought the tennis ball back to be thrown again.
They'd been at this for a half hour, the chill of the early morning wrapping itself around Murph and waking up his senses. He had to admit Blue Harbor was beautiful— quiet and expansive where San Francisco had been loud and cramped. He could love it here, he thought. Love, or something close enough to it.
Fig nudged him with her nose and he looked down, tearing his gaze away from the deep reds and golds of the leaves to reach for the ball in her mouth. She dodged him, her tail wagging fiercely, and Murph laughed, faking her out with a lunge only to snatch the ball when she wasn't expecting it. He held up the ball, grinning with his victory as her tail wagged in earnest.
When he threw the ball this time, however, she only watched it sail away, sitting back on her haunches and turning big, sad puppy eyes back toward him. He looked at her, mouth open incredulously as he looked from where the ball had fallen and back to his dog who'd switched up tactics entirely, making him look like he'd just taken her toy away from her and thrown it across the park. "Well, now I just look like an asshole," he told the terrier, who only blinked at him, ass still firmly planted on the ground. "You're really not going to go get it?" He waited a moment, like she might respond, and then sighed, hands on his hips. "Fine," he grumbled like he'd been put out and went to retrieve the ball in a half-jog.
On his return trip, he made eye contact with Fig who was still sitting exactly where he'd left her. Could dogs look smug? Because he was pretty sure she looked smug. He nearly opened his mouth to accuse her of as much when her ears perked, head swinging to the opposite direction. Oh, no. He knew that look. It usually meant she'd spotted a squirrel or a cat or some other small, too fast thing she'd be happy to chase. "Fig!" he called in warning. "Stay!"
But she was suddenly off, running in the opposite direction, her long lead trailing behind her. And it was then that he realized he wasn't holding the other end. "Fig, come!" he called again, but apparently she'd just undone years of training in pursuit of whatever tiny beast had caught her attention. He was running now, trying to grab the end of the lead before she could get too far, but Fig was faster.
He kept his attention focused on the leash so he didn't see exactly when she'd found what she was looking for, only knew she had when the leash slowed and he managed to dip down and snatch it up, wrapping it around his wrist for good measure.
And then he looked up.
Fig's tail was wagging so fast it was little more than a white blur, and she was making these tiny whining sounds he'd never heard her make before as she desperately jumped up onto someone.
Horrified at her bad manners, he opened his mouth to apologize, but it took several moments for the situation to sink in because he'd seen Valley's face in strangers for months. He'd see her on the couch beside him out of the corner of his eye, he'd hear the sound of her footsteps through the house they'd once shared, her ghost still lived in all of the habits that time had carved into his soul.
And every time, it was never her.
So seeing her now, even after he blinked once— twice— was like diving into icy water. The air left his lungs, a sharp intake of breath getting caught within the hollowness of his chest. He was frozen to the spot.
And somehow, the first thing he thought was that it was early for her. She loved to sleep in, loved a lazy morning in oversized comfy clothes, a warm cup of coffee in her hands. And it was such intimate knowledge for someone that had turned out to be a perfect stranger that Murph had to take a step back. He thought his legs might give out altogether because what was she doing here?
Had he finally lost his mind? He'd gone fully numb, every thought he'd ever had in his life coalescing like smoke, roaring between his ears until the only thing that was left was—
"Valley?"
#i told you this was a murph and fig novel for no reason#c: valley#also this gif is a tad too dramatic but SLIM PICKINS!!!#love this 613 page novel having a single word of dialogue lmfao

So the Dteam road trip + patches fic that's been in the works (in the WIPs folder whoops) for like, two years now, has started to grow on me again. And it's great, like honestly it's one of my favorite things I've ever written, but I don't know what the vibe is anymore?? And I'm so conflicted - do I just rewrite everything and start from scratch so the vibes match, or do I soldier on and rematch the vibes like some kind of intricate puzzle working???
(also I might post a little snippet of the first chapter because I see a lot of people posting their stuff and it's giving me the happy wiggles to be in an involved and excited community again :D)
#murph talks#i really love it i just forgot how m u c h i love it#but also idk my writing was so much different and idk what to do???#and then there's the fear that i might never finish it. so. guh what do i doooo :(#but i love this little community and wanna give it my best <3

Once again CRYING over NADDPOD.
God fucking damn! First off fuck pestilence for going after Balnor when he was down. I get it. It’s totally ~in character~ or whtvr but how DARE you hit dad while he’s down!!!
Secondly, it’s so wild to me how much Balnor means to us all when he essentially started as a bit? Kind of? Ugh
Thirdly, doing the death saves while everyone is trying to bring him back. And having them be 2 fails, 2 successes. And that fucking (lucky) 13 bringing him back I swear to GOD. I had to cover my mouth when I squealed or I probably would’ve woken my neighbors

Im rewatching Starstuck Odyssey now and 1) it's still so hilarious to me that this was my introduction to Murph as a player, and 2) its EXTRA hilarious now that I know how Murph rolls that Lou insists Barry make the check to gamble all of their money at the casino
#siobhan is even like 'we're letting MURPH roll??' lmaoooo#the fact that he a) fails the roll b) WOULD have succeeded if he'd chosen to roll twice with the lower DC#and c) rolls JUST low enough on that one roll that Lou's help can't do anything??

Chicken
John Egan X Farmer! Reader
Summary: When Meatball kills the farmer's chicken. Bucky flies to the rescue.
Warning: Animal death/ swearing/ mention of boobs/ use of Y/n/ mention of blood.
Word count: 1.2k
A/n: I'm alive y'all! And my brain functioned again!
When John Egan came to Thorpe Abbotts, he was aware of the people that already lived there. He knew they were here, but he didn’t know them personally. When he saw her riding her horse, he knew he had to introduce himself. But he didn’t have the courage to go talk to her, she looked so intimidating, riding her horse and handling the goats.
Y/n lived on her family’s farm, but her family was away, they were in Austria, the farm was their summer house, but they wanted Y/n to keep it clean and work there. Usually, she would’ve been back in Austria, but with the war, it wasn’t safe to travel. Her chores were simple, making sure the goats didn’t run away, getting the eggs from the chicken coop and keeping the stables clean. It was easy, especially since she got her horse, Fred. He was a mustang, a beast that she had trouble training, but she kept persevering and was able to ride him. She was riding Fred everywhere; she loved her horse.
‘’Cleven! Good morning’’ she greeted the blonde. They quickly became friends when he came on the base, he went to introduce himself to the people living on the base, already saying he was sorry for the future disturbance that the soldiers were going to cause. When Gale saw Y/n, he thought she was amazing and they talked for hours, quickly becoming friends. They would trade stuff together, for example, if Y/n wanted a bottle of whiskey, she would give Gale a dozen eggs. ‘’Morning Y/n! How are you?’’ he asked. ‘’Good, just counting the chickens’’ she stopped when she heard a dog barking. ‘’Why do you have a dog here?’’ she asked, stepping in front of the chickens. ‘’Brady got him, I’ll make sure he doesn’t come near the coop’’ he reassured her. ‘’He better, because if he eats any of my chickens…’’ she threatened. Meatball came running towards Buck. ‘’He’s cute, but I meant what I said’’ she looked at the dog, smiling. ‘’I’ll make sure of it’’ he smiled.
John Egan heard a horse neigh; he knew that Y/n was close. And he was right, her (Y/h/c) hair were flying in the wind, she had a cowboy hat on her head. A white tank top that made her boobs look 5 times bigger and jeans that made her legs look amazing. She was beautiful. ‘’Y/n, what’s wrong?’’ Gale asked. She got down her horse, patting him before looking at the boys. ‘’I can’t come here and say hello?’’ she smiled as she looked at Bucky. ‘’Technically, you’re on a private property’’ Murph said. She scoffed. ‘’Technically, you guys invaded our property’’ she replied. ‘’Touché’’ Murph laughed. ‘’Nice ride’’ John Egan said, looking at the horse. ‘’Thanks, that’s Fred.’’ She replied. ‘’Um, do you guys have a minute to spare? We need help moving the hay’’ she asked. ‘’Sure, we can help’’ Bucky quickly replied.
‘’Be careful with that Jeep, don’t run over my animals’’ she smiled at Bucky, before she climbed up her horse. ‘’Wanna race?’’ Bucky proposed. She gave him a challenging smile, Fred was a fast horse, he was originally supposed to be a racehorse, but Y/n bought him at the town auction. ‘’Sure, but don’t cry if you lose’’ she smiled. When Fred started to run, Bucky knew he’d already lost, he didn’t want to go too fast, in case of a loose animal. She looked like a goddess, riding that horse. He thought about her riding him for a second, but his thoughts quickly faded when he heard Meatball bark, his mouth was all bloody and he had feathers on him.
‘’Calm down! It’s only 3 chickens!’’ Gale Cleven tried to calm her down, but she was ready to skin the dog alive, Bucky was holding her so she wouldn’t kill the dog. ‘’IT’S LESS EGGS! LET ME GO! I’m going to kill that dog’’ she tried to get away, but Bucky’s grip was too hard on her waist. Meatball didn’t have any regret; he was looking around like his life wasn’t on the line. John Brady, the owner, arrived at the scene in a Jeep, with Harry Crosby and Rosie Rosenthal. The 3 bodies were lying on the ground, headless. Y/n took deep breaths and calmed down a little. ‘’What’s going on?’’ Brady asked. ‘’You’re the owner?’’ she asked, angrily. Brady nodded. ‘’Your stupid dog ate 3 of my chickens!’’ she spat, showing the corpse with her hand. Brady swallowed a nervous laugh. ‘’I told you to watch him and I’m leaving the farm for an hour, I come back, and Dave, Danny and Darrel are dead!’’ she said, looking at her chickens. Bucky had to refrain a laugh at the names of the deceased animals. ‘’I’m sorry miss, I don’t know what else to say’’ Brady explained, scratching the back of his head. She took a deep breath, realizing how crazy she looked. She touched Bucky’s hand, to show him that he could let go. She replaced her hair as she sighed. ‘’I’m sorry, I kinda overreacted. You guys can go, I’ll, uh, clean up. Sorry for the disturbance.’’ She said, with an embarrassed tone.
He felt bad for her, sure it was only 3 chickens, but still. So, that night, he decided to find the courage and go talk to her for more than four words. He rode his Jeep to her house; he nervously taped the wheel with his thumb as he shut the engine down. Seeing lights outside, Y/n got out of the house, standing on her porch, seeing it was a soldier, she wiped her hands on her pants before going down the short stairs. ‘’Major Egan, to what do I owe this visit?’’ she asked, trying to hide her joy. She found him attractive, he was a gentleman during the day and a manwhore during the night, or at least that was his reputation. ‘’Hello, please call me Bucky, and I’m here to pay you back’’ he smiled. She tilted her head. ‘’Pay me back? You owe me money?’’ she questioned. He shook his head, chuckling. ‘’No, it’s for the deceased chickens’’ he explained.
Y/n fought the urge to smirk. ‘’You want to pay me for the chickens I lost?’’ she asked. ‘’Yeah, I mean you said it yourself, it’s less eggs’’ he blurted out. Now she couldn’t fight it anymore, a smile creeped on her face as she looked at the flustered Bucky. ‘’Come inside’’ she invited. He nodded as they waled inside the small home. The smell of burnt candle filling his nose as he looked around the kitchen. ‘’Does Brady know you’re doing this?’’ she asked as they sat in the kitchen. ‘’No, it’s my idea’’ he looked on the ground, not daring to look at her in the eyes. ‘’That’s very sweet, Bucky, but I can’t accept this, you must have family that this money belongs too, what about Mrs. Egan. It’s very thoughtful but keep it’’ she politely said. He started to laugh at the mention of a Mrs. Egan. ‘’There’s no Mrs. Egan, never set that part right, and my family doesn’t need the money. Please, Y/n, take it’’ this time, their eyes were locked into each other.
‘’You know, I didn’t think you would be the one offering me money. I thought Cleven would do it’’ she said, taking a sip of her homemade alcohol. It’s been an hour since Bucky came into her home they’ve been talking ever since. ‘’He felt bad, but he has to keep it for the phones, his girlfriend wants to hear from him twice a week’’ he chucked. She smiled as she looked at him. ‘’It’s getting late, I should get back to the base’’ he said as he looked at his watch. She got an idea. ‘’Are you free for dinner tomorrow?’’ she blurted out. He looked at her, smiling. ‘’Uh, yes, why?’’ he asked. ‘’Because I enjoy your company. And I have some extra money to buy good meat.’’ She smiled. ‘’Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow, then.’’ He leaned to kiss the top of her hand. ‘’Good night, Y/n’’ he said. ‘’Good night, Bucky, see you tomorrow’’

there was a great post on here about how Murph uses metal dice, and that the other players use resin dice, which are much more likely to have imperfections that bias their rolls, and over time they throw away their "cursed dice" that roll poorly and stick with their "lucky dice" that roll well, so on average the other players probably DO roll better than Brian "i have just a good a chance at rolling well as any of you" Murphy.
does anyone else remember this post? can you link it please? i can't find it :c

my ideal bit-based d20 season would be as follows
the dm: brennan lee mulligan (this is crucial due to the required party to real life table dynamic)
the pcs:
emily axford: elf sorcerer
lou wilson: tiefling warlock
brian murphy: some fucked up little druid guy
siobhan thompson: fae wizard
aabria iyengar: human wizard
zac oyama: human fighter
trust me on this
the setting is modern fantasy where all the pcs work for the same magic company but they start to notice that things are a little bit
funky
so they all band together to investigate. siobhan & lou have the most power in the company of the party, but it's importsnt to note that siobhan is slightly less competent that aabria.
this drives aabria bananas ofc, so we get silly moments very akin to "anyone can cast fireball," she's always complaining to whoever will listen so it's silly fun time
murph & emily are both interns, emily was given the position via nepotism so she feels perfectly comfortable doing shenanigans to get to the bottom of this. murph did not get here via nepotism so he's sweating the whole time about how emily will 100% get them fired
lou is having the time of his life he's working with a bunch of goofy guys and he gets to finally climb the corporate ladder like he deserves to after all these years, he's there to stir the pot a little while everyone else is going buck wild
you might be wondering why is zac oyama a human fighter? this is because a) he's the underpaid and exasperated head of security. the mages are so convinced that nothing but magic can stop them, but he knows better. b) so aabria can look at him like he's a camera from the office and be like look at all these non-human freaks. and c) to bring a little bit of colin provolone's just a guy energy to the table
the party at some point experiences goofy infighting so it becomes a silly argument where the sides are aabria & emily and siobhan & murph over the morality and effectiveness of magic use and they spend a good 10-15 minutes trying to get lou and zac to pick a side. they do not.
most of the campaign is just silly bickering
the bbeg is of course, capitalism

Semi-inspired by your NADDpod posts, was woondering if you have thoughts on the following:
A someone who enjoys the longform aspect of CR campaigns & has been a fan since C1 days, but who has bounced off of TAZ in the past & won't do D20 b/c I'm one of the few people on Tumblr who is not a fan of Brennan, would you recommend NADDpod as a "C3 is ending soon, what do I fill the gap with until the next CR campaign" show?
FWIW: I do enjoy the acting aspects of CR, but that's more from the player characters, so a writer-centric DM is appealing in many ways. (I love Matt as a DM, but his NPCs are a bonus not the draw for me.) On the flip side, I do sometimes struggle with audio-only (part of why TAZ didn't work), because of audio processing issues, especially differentiating between voices without visual cues.
Also: I generally am interested in AP games that balance gameplay with narrative rather than leaning heavily on narrative & treating the game as ancillary. & I'm looking for something that is not a straight up comedy, but has a mix of both dramatic & funny elements.
Before your NADDpod posts, I was considering finally trying Candela Obscura, which I gave a pass before because of Brennan (I was going to do a bit of research first to see if I could skip the ones he was involved in tbh), or one of the CR podcasts. But as much as I like CR, I also wouldn't mind a break from them / having another option for my actual play listening/viewing pleasure.
hmmm, so this is tricky and depends a lot on the nuances here, so let me talk through it.
I think firstly, I would need to know exactly what you don't vibe with re: Brennan, because he is also a guest in the first NADDPod campaign (not for a long period of time, but it's one of the strongest arcs and I wouldn't recommend skipping it). I also think that The Circle of Needle and Thread, the Candela series he is in (and each is standalone) is easily the best Candela series. If your issues are largely related to him as a GM rather than a player, he is a player in both of these, but also tbh I must admit that in the scope of actual play, there's really no player I would actively refuse to watch an episode over (well, I mean, there's people who if invited back NOW would give me pause given it would indicate horrible judgement of character, but I don't see the point in avoiding them in previous works), though there are GMs I'm not really into.
Anyway with that huge caveat/unanswered question: I would recommend you check out The Circle of The Crimson Mirror, which is imo the second-strongest Candela circle, and while some reference others in passing (this one included) they are all standalone. I think Candela definitely is a gameplay system that centers narrative, if that makes sense, but it is very much a balance, ie, it's not pure RP and while I think it's obvious WBN would not be a good fit for you for many other reasons, that is a case of narrative overruling TTRPG gameplay and Candela is not that.
Re Naddpod, some thoughts.
I personally think the first campaign is in some ways the strongest, and in some ways not (really, the main reason is that the cast is learning D&D early on and it takes until episode 13 or so to really gel), but also this is colored by the fact that I do think for me, podcast actual play unfortunately works best as a binge since I don't retain it as well as I do something with a visual element. I binged NADDPod campaign 1 and listened to the other two week to week, so I have a much stronger sense of the first campaign. I think the best way to describe NADDPod tonally is that it is both very silly and comedic at times, but the narrative is deeply sincere and touching. And I do think Murph is one of the strongest encounter designers out there; he is an avid gamer and while I am just entering the realm of video games because I got annoyed with not being able to experience an entire medium, among other things, I think this has really helped him integrate combat into story. He also has a great sense of fantasy narrative; I know he's a fan of The Wheel of Time.
In general, I really like Murph and think he's underrated because, and this is a personal feeling and I still very much like love Matt and Brennan as DMs, both of them are firstly, very experienced DMs who have been doing this for over 25 years apiece whereas Murph learned to play D&D in like, 2016. The second is that Matt and Brennan are at times too nice for their own good, in my opinion, and Murph will just be like "No???" I am also salty and curmudgeonly and I think it ultimately makes you a better storyteller and DM to be a kind person but not necessarily a nice one, and a lot of critiques I've had about CR campaign 3 or D20 campaigns Brennan ran would have been addressed by the GM being just a little more willing to say "no" to their players.
If you really cannot stand Brennan at all under any circumstances, you could skip to NADDPod's second campaign, Eldermourne, which is in a separate world entirely. I think the first campaign is a little stronger, but the second is still quite good. I also think that auditory processing is its own challenge but the players not being all men from the same family does make it way easier to differentiate voices; obviously you can always tell Emily, but Caldwell, Jake, and Murph don't really sound much like each other. Campaign 3 of NADDPod does call back heavily to its first campaign (in a way I think is honestly way better done than Campaign 3 of CR) so I would not skip to that without a Bahumia campaign 1 listen (which again does have a 5 episode arc with Brennan which is imo a highlight of the campaign, and not specifically because he is there either as it focuses heavily on Jake's characters.)
As for CR podcasts I am super behind on The Re-Slayer's Take (I really am behind on all podcasts; I found that because video games take so much time I need my drive time to like, not focus on any fictional narrative) and the style takes a bit to adjust to if you're used to most actual play, but it is worth checking out. However, they cut out a lot of gameplay elements as part of the editing choices to trim it down and make it accessible, so if you like that aspect you might be disappointed. I say either listen to a few NADDPod episodes of either the first or second campaign (with the knowledge that for the first, it gets less goofy over time) or watch Circle of the Crimson Mirror and take it from there.

🚨SPOILERS FOR FANTASY HIGH JUNIOR YEAR EPISODE 8🚨
Dimension20 "Fantasy High Junior Year"
Episode 8 "Fracas at the Frostyfaire Folk Festival"
Timestamp: 00:00:48
Video Length: 4min. & 58sec.
The intro for episode 8 😂 (Ally and Zac lip-syncing!)
Brennan with Ally copying and Zac lip-syncing: "Hello, one and all! Welcome back to another thrilling episode of Dimension 20: Fantasy High Junior Year. I'm your humble dungeon master, Ally Beardsley."
Ally: *yells and points at Brennan*
Brennan: *laugh*
Siobhan: "He freaking got you, dude."
Brennan: "Freaking got you, dude."
Ally: "****, I got freaking got."
Emily: "I was so enraptured here that I didn't even catch you catching them." *points at Brennan and Ally*
Ally: "I was so enraptured here."
Brennan: "I see it all, okay? I never miss a bit, famously. Never absorbed in what's going on here. Folks, I'm your humble...(babbling intro rapidly) Our Intrepid Heroes! Say hi, Intrepid Heroes!"
Everyone: "Hi, Intrepid Heroes!"
Adaine: "See you at Basrar's!"
Brennan: "See you at Basrar's. Short episode."
Emily: "Wow, okay."
Brennan: "Okay, moving along."
Murph: "Short 'Adventuring Party.'"
Brennan: "Short 'Adventuring Party.' Last we left off, our Intrepid Heroes were grinding through the fall semester at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy. We had some high highs, some low lows. We discovered some interesting information, with Lydia Barkrock returning with data about Bakur the demon and a sort of ritual that had occurred tagged onto the end of a mystery that Riz had noted and that had been followed up on by Kristen around the disappearance of Lucy Frostblade, who seemed to have submitted paperwork to change her deity at the end of the last school year and then suddenly withdrew it. Riz also found the last place that she was observed before she went missing, although she has been confirmed by magic to be dead. We also discovered that Kipperlilly Copperkettle was getting food trucks with some little subliminal ads in the wax paper. There was a sort of fraught confrontation between Kristen and the other presidential candidate."
Emily: "Was it a confrontation? It was more of a conversation."
Ally: "Yeah, Yeah. I really came out on top, I think."
Brennan: "Yes, absolutely. We had some incredibly high academic achievements. Actually, A+'s across the board, save for our party cleric."
Ally: "I'll take it!"
Siobhan: "Hey, if you're failing, a C is an A+."
Ally: "A C is really good for Kristen."
Brennan: "Also a C in barbarian."
Zac: "A bit of a C."
Brennan: *laughs* "A bit of a C. But huge achievements in your artificer classes, and we also had huge achievements in warlock classes as Fig actually went on a quick impromptu field trip to Hell with her warlock class."
Emily: "They're building a recording studio."
Ally: "That sounded so sick, honestly."
Brennan: "Honestly, so sick."
Siobhan: "So sick."
Lou: "And licking Baby?"
Brennan: "Licking Baby."
Siobhan: "Fabian played the bass."
Emily: "I don't know how much to put my foot down about that."
Ally: "I think that needs to be the only merch that comes out of this season."
Siobhan: "Everybody lick Baby."
Ally: "Just a shirt that says, 'Lick Me,' and in the back, 'Everybody lick Baby.'"
Siobhan: "No context. No picture of Baby."
Brennan: "Everybody lick Baby. We also saw a new sort of, like, the coolest kid on campus, Fabian Seacaster, double A+'s, captain of the Owlbears, running study hall at Seacaster Manor. Never mind the rapidly piling boxes of takeout stinking it up in the kitchen."
Lou: "Hey, you know, we clean those out right before everyone comes over. I have to spend the day with them."
Brennan: *laughs* "As well as our Elven Oracle having to fend off ancient high elves in search of arcane wisdom at her job at Basrar's, working as a waitress, helping to serve that ice cream."
Siobhan pretending to serve ice cream and Zac pretending to eat it! 😂🤣
Brennan: "What incredible... It's finally time for Basrar to hire help, given that he has literally no overhead. He generates the ice cream from another dimension."
Emily: "Oh."
Brennan: "That's been all profit, except for what he pays on the mortgage for the shop itself. Incredible."
Zac: "His books are good.
Brennan: "His books are good. He's doing well."
Lou: "My man's in the black."
Brennan: "In the black, okay? We return back to Mordred Manor. And actually, I want to confirm with all of you as we come back here and find you, on the day of the Frostyfaire Folk Festival, a little sort of loose thread of a connection between something that is occurring at Gorgug's house, occurring at the Thistlespring Tree, that you had seen some information that your mom was working on connected to, but got away from you. Junior Year, pretty ****ing busy, gang. And speaking of how busy it is, we also introduced last episode our system for academic stress here in junior year."
Everyone: *holding up stress tokens*
Brennan: "Some of our students barely scathed by the monster that is cortisol as Fig began some paladin classes, both with the paladin teacher Halo St. Croix, and also some tutoring with Porter Cliffbreaker who, due to your incredible attunement with the principles of barbarianism if not any of the actual class features-"
Ally: "That's true, actually."
Brennan: "Porter signed your MCAT when your actual Bard teacher flew into the sky, weeping."
Emily: "I call him Sir."
Ally: "Yeah, finally you give him a shred of respect."
Brennan: "A shred of respect as he's like,"
Porter: "I have no idea why. What have I ever done?"

Murph was aware that she was speaking, and some part of his mind was processing those words, but he was buffering. He hadn't expected his past to follow him here, and now it seemed as thought every facet of it lingered just around the corner like ghosts, ready to jump out at him the very moment he thought he had finally hit his rock bottom. He thought he had done a pretty good job at compartmentalizing, but when those compartments kept getting ripped open by hands that were not his own, he realized just how staggeringly not okay with everything he truly was.
And that was a horrifying realization to have in front of a perfect stranger. Never mind one that actually knew who he was. Knew what had been stolen from him.
And, for some reason, the only thing that came out of his mouth was, "was that a pun? Right before you've gone into bloom. That's a good one." He laughed, the absence of amusement from the sound settling in the pit of his stomach. He felt uncomfortable, he realized. So he tackled the thing he could manage first. "Uh, well. I live here, so. That's probably why you're seeing me here. Um." He chuckled nervously. "You, uh. You know my app?"
Vanya blinks. Of all the gin joints, of all redbrick buildings, of all the Bumfuck, Nowhere Midwestern towns of the Continental United States… Murph Bloom is here, exhaling smoke right into her face.
“You. Yeah. You.” Vanya points an index finger, not at all helpfully, and almost pokes him in the chest. It’s a split second before she realizes that must constitute a social gaffe, only a sliver away from actually making contact, and she backtracks. Retreats for a step. Two steps. Her hand instead hovers uncertainly in the space between them, index finger still jutting out like that same cancer stick he’d wielded just seconds past. “Flower plucked right just before you’ve gone into bloom. Dream child vultured from you. I mean—” Flowers and blooms and vultures. Mixing up metaphors now. “—your app. Fuck, man. Why is Murph Bloom here? In Blue Harbor?” Maybe she should have poked him, then, if only to challenge—no, to confirm—his corporeality.
#this was so DRY i'm sorry#murph just got hit with a lot of feelings at once that he wasn't expecting and shut down#allow him to be unplugged and plugged back in and he'll be better i promise#c: vanya

Son of a bitch, I now have a crush on Cillian Murphy.
On one hand, you’re kinda late to the party I’ve always thought he was kinda cute but also this is the second person in a short period of time talking about C Murph what happened
