It’s okay to not be okay
Did you know emergency service workers are 3 times more likely to suffer from major depression and PTSD than the general public.
The ambulance service has a high risk of development of PTSD than the other emergency services and military. A prevalence rate of 14.6% in the ambulance service compared to the general population of 3.7(males)- 5.1%(females) military in combat roles 4.7%, Police 3.9% and Fire 7.3%.
John Langtry, Marcin Owczarek, [...], and Mark Shevlin,. (2021) Predictors of PTSD and CPTSD in UK firefighters. Eur J Psychotraumatol. 2021; 12(1): 1849524. doi: 10.1080/20008198.2020.1849524
My time on the road as a student and a paramedic I have been exposed to numerous incidents that had the potential to negatively affect my mental well-being. Some of which did impact it and to this day still etched into the forefront of my memories. So what do we do. Lock it up and move on.
Mental Health Stigmatisation within the emergency services is very much present, although there are some positive advancements in mental well-being within the services, some better than others. I can only talk about my experiences within the ambulance trusts I have worked in and one is a lot better than the other. Night and day differences unfortunately. My time in the ambulance service I have played a large role in staff well-being. The new service I joined I am attempting to develop their staff well-being network a monumental task.
Surprisingly the BBC show Casualty (season 33) done a fantastic job highlighting the problems with PTSD in the ambulance service through their character Ian, a paramedic that ends up fighting against himself and his mental health.
In 2020 Mars et al., released a study looking into suicides within the ambulance service. Their research found 15 members of the ambulance service had committed suicide in 2019. This research was conducted prior to the covid 19 pandemic, thus unfortunately would likely be higher as a result of the difficulties we faced during.
Mars, B., Hird, K., Bell, F., James, C. and Gunnell, D., 2020. Suicide among ambulance service staff: a review of coroner and employment records. British paramedic journal, 4(4), pp. 10-15. 10.29045/14784726.2020.12.4.4.10
There are a number of charities and helplines set up to assist emergency services. Some I have had personal experience** with and couldn’t recommend them highly enough. Below I have added details of mental health services. If you are struggling. Speak up.
End The Stigmatisation of Mental Health.

Heavens, you made my whole week with that Tree Man ficlet! It was p-e-r-f-e-c-t. I’ve actually started thinking that maybe he is not that bad. The way you portrayed him is amazing.! It’s Tree Man I was hoping to see! I loved the way he flirts and provokes,it was SO HOT, but I also loved his soft side at the end of the ficlet. He behaved like a gentleman, like Eskel we know! Good job Kacey! I am looking forward to seeing what you plan for his character development!
Also, coming back to my question about music inspiration and the fact you stuck to The Witcher soundtrack - do you have your favorite song?
🌻
I’m so glad you liked it🥰 I can’t wait to write more for him! And even more so now that a lot of people seem to like the way I’ve written him!
My favorite song on the Wild Hunt soundtrack has got to be The Trail by Marcin Przybyłowicz. It’s like the theme song for the game! I love it so much.
My favorite song from s1 is Her Sweet Kiss. It’s so underrated! Joey Batey is so freaking talented. I could listen to his voice all day long.
My favorite song from s2 is hands down Burn Butcher Burn. I think that song is my favorite throughout the entire series to date. It’s just so good and it has so much emotion in it that Jaskier never speaks

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐STAGE 71: Games Of 2020⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Last year may not have gone down as one of the best years we had, if anything, comparing it to a dumpster fire wouldn’t be too far off .
In a year where so many things went wrong, video games were pretty much one of the very few Highlights that stood out in 2020.
The ability to spend hours disappearing into a beautiful world like those in the far away islands of Animal Crossing, the competitive but fun gameshow aesthetic of Fall Guys or revisiting old friends in the land of Midgar was a much welcomed breather that we all needed.
These video games provided the much needed distractions from everything else happening in the world, by enabling us to visit far away places filled with hours upon hours of entertainment, colorful, unique and intriguing characters …and most of all amazing music.
SO This is why THIS stage of the Retro VGM Revival Hour has chosen the 3 most amazing tracks from the various games released in 2020 to get you excited for what’s to come in 2021.

Our Lady of Montalto: Shrine of Our Lady of Montalto in Messina, Italy In 1282, the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to a friar named Nicholas.   During the apparition she promised to send a white dove to the Caperrina hill where she wanted a church built in her name.   The cornerstone for the Shrine of Our Lady of Montalto was laid in 1295 by Queen Constance of Sicily.   It was a monastery for Cistercian nuns from 1389 until 1866.   The Santuario della Madonna di Montalto was severely damaged during the 1908 earthquake and rebuilt in 1930.  This view of the bell tower gives you a hint at the beauty of this Gothic and Romanesque structure.

@gooberinomcgee skomentował(a) Twój post: Remember kids you can't get coronavirus in...
What godforsaken idiocy has humankind commited this time?
(I’m replying like that bc, oh boy, it’s a long fucking story)
TLDR: Polish influencers are so stupid it brought back to life the most influential “””commentary””””(he doesn’t want to be called that) youtuber and to do that something really cancerous have to happen.
First the most infamous influencer Marcin Pierdolony Dubiel (he’s such a trainwreck I would need other post to explain that but he’s known from “run naked in shopping center challenge”) was talking how much he don’t give a fuck the virus so he went to Italy 2 days before first confirmed case here, gave a lecture how little people died of it and how they all are 50+(I don’t follow news rn but if I remember correctly a lot of first deaths were people in 30s) .Now he’s posting how much he miss going out with hashtag stay home because it’s trending.
Next are 4 girls that pretty much just after the government introduces new restrictions went to Starbucks and Mcdonalds to do stream. When called out one of them said famous quote “there’s no way to get coronavirus in Starbucks *eyeroll**”.
Other girl made food supplies of 6 packs of chips and shortly after was vlogging going to shop when her mother, that she is living with, could contact the virus. While preaching not going out and complainging that othrt people are going out.
Other was bitching about getting hate comments after she went to Dubai when the shit started in Italy and Poland but she booked tickets when it was already ongoing in Asia..She was running around with her mouth open in there. She was also preaching hygiene and not panicking while filming tiktoks where her friend was throwing cookies into her mouth.. Also she was posting shit with #stayathome while being on other continent.
The fitness couple posted tips what to do so the virus won’t catch your ass and it was: eat fruit and vegetables, drink water; all while having stock of toilet paper on the backseat of his car. And the best tip: Drink boiled water because virus dies in 27 deg C. During The YT Apology they posted list of fake news about the virus but still preaching tips that were on the same fucking list (If you drink water then it flushes the virus to stomach where it is digested). All while crying about getting hate comments and that we all should unite now.
And last TV actress that promoted energy healing scam from other TV personality during fucking global pandemic.

THE FIRST EDITION OF PAPERLUST PHOTOBOOKS FEST IS OVER!
IT COULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT OUR PARTNERS, GUESTS, ARTISTS, VOLUNTEERS AND GUESTS. THANK YOU ALL!
by Fresh From Poland & Paper Beats Rock, funded by International Visegrad Fund
24.05 – 14.06.2019, Kraków
Paperlust Photobook Fest is a new biennial on the map of photographic events in Europe, stemmed from love to paper. Fest focuses on regional collaboration and aims to present the local self-publishing scene to the wider audience. The motivation behind the festival is to allow discovery while encouraging artistic exchange and explore the power of self-publishing as an offline medium, co-existing in the era of the Internet. PAPERLUST programme is formed of exhibitions, talks, book signings, panel discussion, workshop, photobook fair, reading room (chill zone and library) and dummy review. We invite small publishers, makers and established artists to present their practices, ranging from self-made publications and zines to book objects, albums, and photobooks published by the established institutions. As a reoccurring event, the festival aspires to become a photobook hub in  Central and East Europe.
First edition – PAPERLUST Photobook Fest 2019. Art and self-publishing as a tool for social change is focused on the Visegrad region and has been created in close collaboration with the festival’s partners from Slovakia, Czech, and Hungary. It intends to gather local institutions, publishers, non-profit organizations and makers together to increase the visibility and exposure of the artists using photobooks to tell their stories, as well as strengthen, connect and empower the local art scene.

PHOTOBOOK. ASSET  EXHIBTION GALERIA I!, KRAKÓW, 24.05.2019
Exhibition Asset focuses on the economic and prestige aspects of art publications. An artistic book has become a tool for the emancipation of artist-maker. Having printed publication allows in an almost automatic way to get into the field of the world of art, or rather the history of art. It is often made with the purpose of creating a unique object, that might become a cultural asset.
Except for the context criterion, we do not have any other criteria for evaluation, what is a work of art and what is not. In any case, however, we need legitimacy – perhaps as time passes, distribution of power and who has the legitimacy to evaluate and give the status to a work of art will change. However, traditional, institutional bodies are still holding a strong position. Even though artists, as well as publishers,  say that books are overproduced, that there is no environment, not enough audiences or market, publishing an art book still seems to be amongst the best ways to build up one’s position in the art world.
The exhibition presents the selection of books made with a purpose to become an asset, a self-standing piece of art, to bring an income or to became a valuable, collectable object.
Artists: Petr Fabo, Ivars Gravlejs, Agata Grzybowska, Blanka Győri and Máté Labu, Hubert Humka, Dominika Jackuliakova, Libuse Jarcovjakova, Martin Kochan, Wawrzek Kolbusz, Peter Kollanyi, Martin Kollar, Wojtek Mazan, Peter Puklus, Łukasz Rusznica, Michał Siarek, Jakub Stanek, Krystyna Jędrzejewska-Szmek & Łukasz Gniadek, Beatrix Szörényi, Milan Tittel, Tereza Zelenkova

ZNACZY SIĘ, KRAKÓW, 24.05 – 14.06.19
The show is a part of the series that focuses on various aspects of the photobook. A carefully designed exhibition presents the most interesting samples of the photobooks from the Visegrad region, that have been made out of the need to convey, usually a personal, story. Most of the presented works are either self-published or published in small editions, including hand-made or low-cost printed zine publications.
A book, as depicted in the show, becomes the means for communicating one’s personal experience, a cultural experience and the same time becomes an instrument protecting such experience from oblivion. The leitmotiv of a narration underlines the role of the recipient as an active participant/interpreter of the work of art.
Low-cost self-publishing is here a starting point for a polemic about the nature of the medium. The dissemination using the most economic and least demanding means gives it the power of an independent statement. The questions asked by the authors are an attempt to reflect on the phenomena of this type of publications on the Central European market, their role, ways of production and presentation, as well as expectations of the recipient.
Artists: Tabori Andras, Ewa Behrens, Eva Benkova, Stanislav Briza, Radek Brousil, Jan Brykczynski, Magda Buczek, Kateřina Držková, Peter Fabo, Viola Fátyol, Lucia Gamanová, Aurélia Garová, Agnieszka Gotowała, Anna Hornik , Tomoya Imamura, Zuzana Ivašková, Tereza Kabůrková, Ines Karčáková, Joanna Margarethe Kischka, Deana Kolencikova, Jan Kolský, Viktor Kopasz, Paulina Korobkiewicz, Andrea Kurjakova, Katarzyna Ewa Legendź, Tomasz Liboska, Michał Loba, Alicja Łabądź, Maciej Moskwa, Boris Németh, Anna Orłowska, Krzysiek Orłowski, Ivana Paleckova, Igor Pisuk, Marcin Płonka, Piotr Pytel, Krzysztof Racoń, Kaja Rejczel Rata, Anka Sielska, Jakub Stanek, Juraj Starovecký, Dorota Stolarska, Eva Szombat, Budha Tamás, Jiri Thyn, Balázs Varju Tóth, Ondrej Urban, Imrich Veber, Dorotteya Veykony, Ján Viazanička, Lukasz Wierzbowski, Karolina Wojtas, Adrian Wykrota, Ficsór Zsolt, Kasia Zolich, KWAS (Karolina Wojtas, Agnieszka Sejud)

PHOTOBOOK. PROCESS EXHIBTION
NOŚNA GALLERY, KRAKÓW, 24.05 – 14.06.19
In this exhibition, we treat objects of art as a consequence and as an event. We explore the medium of a book as a work in progress submerged in group work, culture, and its own particularities. The exhibition investigates photobooks as a constantly evolving medium in relation to its potentiality. It includes drafts, dummies, sketches, and excerpts from different stages of the work that cannot be completed.
Referring directly to the activities related to the book in a political context, here also the core idea is an artistic prosumer activity, or more precisely its aspect pertaining to work with an art object, that is done by a particular group/ collective. The work created in this way is a result of the vision and ideas of all those involved in the creation process. We want to open a dialogue on the role of a photo editor in photographic publications. We want to define the route which the author- photo editor relation is going through and tension it generates through the choice of photographs, arrangement, strategy – a cycle of events related to the photographic book.
Process exhibition emphasizes a special presence and interactive lecture by Viktor Kopasz and his lifelong process of creating Diaries.
Kopasz’s works become a starting point to think about a book in terms of a multidimensional process. The process can be considered from the perspective of an artist, as a work that can be presented synchronously – from idea to implementation – or asynchronously, as a kind of spiral, which concentrically returns to the centre, and can be looked at from different positions. By disrupting the order of the beginning and the end, the book appears as a final product of the process, enters into a new cycle – that varies depending on the adapted presentation and distribution strategy.
It is a more specific kind of self-publishing, in the context of the previous examples, as it functions as a work of art on the border of the avant-garde, ready-made and niche, crafted publications. Kopasz consciously plays with the medium, its content, and formal potential.

VIKTOR KOPASZ. PROCESS. PROLONGED IDENTITY. OPEN STUDIO
APTEKA GALLERY, KRAKÓW, 25.05 – 27.05.19
Our ambition is to involve the artist in the process of creating. Therefore, for a limited time, we want to change the gallery’s window into an artist’s studio. Artist, being present, will allow the viewers to look at a photographic book as part of a broader phenomenon. The artist is working for 3 days in the window of the gallery. The temporary display changes every day. It might be a radical move or a subtle shift of meaning that we can follow alongside the process.
The presentation of the works and performative character of the exhibition by Viktor Kopasz allows placing the contemporary phenomenon of the book boom in a historical context while creating an experience of the process itself in real time.

Self-publishing practices in Hungary in the post-digital era/ Beata Istvánkó
The notion of artists’ publishing activities has changed over the past decades, in particular with
the expansion of the art market and the globalization of artistic practices, combined with the advent of the digital era and the introduction of new modes of production and circulation. Print and digital projects employ experimental formats and blur distinctions between art press, curatorial
experiments, and other publishing enterprises. The aim of the presentation is to summarize the history of independent art publishing in Hungary after 2000 through the activity of the Budapest based ISBN books+gallery.
The ISBN is a contemporary art bookstore and a gallery space established in 2017. The name of the gallery was obtained from the 13-digit identification number for publication, the ISBN-number (International Standard Book Number). The most important mission of the ISBN books+gallery is to map, collect, exhibit and distribute the domestic and regional, Hungarian and foreign language, new and second-hand contemporary art publications, exhibition catalogues, zines, art books, photobooks and theoretical publications.
Young scene of photobook makers in Slovakia/ Olja Triaška Stefanović
Five years ago students from the Department of Photography and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava, Slovakia showed great interest in making photobooks within their visual researches. Olja Triaška Stefanović, together with her colleague Juraj Blaško from Visual Communication department, realized that it is necessary to open new and interdisciplinary course, that will link two departments and prepare students to make more professional photobooks. They created and started together to teach, PHO BO – Creation of Photobook where the main part of the course is focused on teaching a wide range of technological processes together with visual dramaturgy and storytelling. The author will be focused on the presentation of youngest generations of authors from Slovakia, their production of photobook and how they can improve the self-publishing market in Slovakia. Triaška Stefanović will present their books, zines and introduce to the audience how they work within the PHO BO, what is the course methodology and how they prepare students for professional work after graduation.
I shout „That’s Me!” Stories of Czech fanzines from the ’80s till now // Miloš Hroch & Pavel Turek // presentation of the book
The book ‘I shout “That‘s me!” Stories of Czech fanzines from the 80s till now’, published by PageFive, for the first time takes its readers through uncharted waters of the Czech fanzine scene, that is of unofficial amateur magazines. It brings to light stories of those who fell for computer games or wrote sci-fi stories, who obsessively compiled their own metal music charts, who were driven to street demonstrations by hardcore punk music or who wanted to change the standing of women in society. And about those who then wrote about it freely in their magazines. „This type of publication has the advantage that you can wave it around and shout ‚That’s me!’” – a photographer, a protagonist of the youngest fanzine trend of photozines, explains the essence of fanzines in one of the chapters of the book. And while there is the talk of the decline of printed media, the microcosm of independent printing is constantly expanding.

KNOW YOUR CONTRACEPTIVE ISSUE ONE: CONDOMS
Article by Camille Salipsip
The different types of contraceptives that exist in our world today show how much society has evolved with access to technology and scientific knowledge. Some of these contraceptives, however, aren’t as accessible or as reliable as one of the most common and so far the safest contraceptive; Condoms.
What is it and how does it work?
Condoms are a type of contraceptive either worn over the penis (if it is a regular condom) or placed inside the vagina (if it is an internal condom) during sexual intercourse to act as a barrier from the semen entering the vagina. This type of contraceptive also prevents the chances of obtaining sexually transmitted diseases (also known as STDs) and unplanned pregnancies.
Where can I get them?
You can get them from different convenience stores such as Watsons, Mini Stop, 7/11, and many more. You may also find them at your local health center or women’s health clinics such as Likhaan. You could even get some for free! A lot of convenience stores, if not all, have them! Some keep them hidden, so don’t be shy to ask for some!
How expensive are they?
The prices can range from 25 pesos for a pack of 3 pieces up to 360 pesos for a pack of 12 pieces, depending on the brand. Some common brands here in the Philippines are Durex and Trust.
Are there any side effects?
Most individuals have not experienced any type of side effect from using condoms. Only those allergic or sensitive to latex may receive irritation from latex condoms. You can use polyurethane, nitrile, or polyisoprene as alternatives to latex condoms. Certain individuals, however, may be irritated from the lube present in certain types of condoms. In this case, it is advised to switch to a different brand or kind of condom. If experiencing any type of irritation/side effect or if symptoms are persisting, do consult a doctor.
How effective are they?
For the prevention of unplanned pregnancies, condoms can range from 82% up to 98% of effectiveness. For the prevention of STDs, it depends on the type of condom, type of STD, and if the condom was kept and utilized properly. Latex and Polyurethane condoms can only protect you from most STDs such as but not limited to HIV, hepatitis, etc. Lambskin condoms, however, do prevent unplanned pregnancies but are not proven to be effective when it comes to the prevention of STDs
Do they protect against STDs?
Yes, they do! Most types of condoms are actually known to be the only proven contraceptive that protects you from STDs as of 2017.
With the information obtained, Amarela PH hopes that you’ve earned a deeper understanding of the topic at hand and wishes that you will use your intellect to promote safe sex! Not everyone is knowledgeable about contraceptives and sex in general so, with your help, we believe we can achieve a better tomorrow with our knowledge about this topic, which is viewed taboo in our country.

Get to know the writer tag
I’ve been tagged by @luckycatsidereus!
1. If you could spend the day with one of your OC’s who would it be and why?
Oh man, it depends on what sort of activity we’d be doing!
If we were just hanging out over a coffee, I’d want to meet my man Resdin, because he is the funniest character of mine that I know. (evidence)
If we were meeting at an art gallery or concert, or just doing something craftsy, I’d go with Anoosha, because she is super creative. (Another character of mine, a makeup artist named Liana, is also quite creative, however she’s very shy and I wouldn’t be able to get past her shell in a day!)
If somebody was teaching me how to survive on a battlefield, or use a sword, I would go with my protagonist Ahrin because she’s quite a patient and understanding teacher... and I love her so much x3
2. Which of your own worlds would you most/least like to live in?
Most: Um, all I’ve written so far are terribly dangerous dystopias and fantasy worlds so none??
Least: All of them; I literally wouldn’t survive *nervous laughing*
3. What is your favourite trope to write?
The chosen one c;
I just love the idea of someone being destined to do something because it raises so many questions: Do they actually have any control over their lives? Would they complete their destiny, even if they actively tried to avoid it? Do all of us have destinies, and therefore no control over our lives?
I also tend to write stories that either require protagonists that have immense political power (so kings, lords, politicians) so that they can literally change the world or that involve powers (usually inherited) that would destroy the world if they were spread amongst the general population, so I’m automatically forced to use the “chosen one” trope. I mean, really though, who can get enough of the last of a line of kings possessing immense power that gained them the throne in the first place and that could spell its end???
4. Do you have a favourite writing snack?
Anything that is salty + crunchy, combined with tea (even though the caffeine makes me go hyper/shaky xD)
5. Which of your OC’s is most like you?
While a lot of my OCs possess certain characteristics like mine, none of them are close to me in personality. For example, while Anoosha is quite creative and enjoys experimenting with visual art, music, and writing (as well as having an interest in hair, makeup, and clothes) like me, she is rebellious and a bit feisty where I am not (and actually bothers to learn about how to do hair, makeup, and dress well lmao).
They’re all people very separate from me; I frequently wonder where they come from and whether I would get along with them at all xD
6. Follow up from 5: Does this make them easier or harder to write for you?
My characters show up when they want to and give me only just enough information about themselves for me to write them. In that way, I find it quite easy to connect with and write them because it feels like they act independently to whatever is going on in my head.
7. Describe yourself using only vine references
I don’t know my vines, sorry :’D
8. Which authors/artists/musicians/creators have inspired you?
Some favourite authors: Laura Gallego Garcia, Patrick Ness, Laini Taylor, Suzanne Collins, Madeline Miller, Garth Nix
Some favourite musicians: Steve Jablonsky, Michael Giacchino, John Powell, John Williams, Lorne Balfe, Marcin Przybylowicz, 2Cellos, The Piano Guys, Lindsey Stirling, Ruelle (*coughs* movie soundtracks)
It’s funny though, because most of my ideas come from the most random places and the inspiration from my favourites mostly has to do with world-building vibes!
9. Favourite song/album?
Blasphemy to make me choose!!!
I go through song/album obsessions every few weeks. Yes, there are some songs that have endured (Rey’s Theme from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Elementalist Lux login screen music by League of Legends, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt soundtrack) but for now my current favourite song is “Journey” from the Destiny 2 soundtrack.
Yeah, my family hates it when I get to put on a song in the car xD
10. What kind of pet do you most want?
Almost three years ago, I was able to get my two babies (cats), Jimi and Hermione. I couldn’t ask for anything more!
11. (Bonus Thing!) What is your favourite line from your current wip?
I don’t have a favourite line, but I love it when I can pack symbolism into a line. For example:
“For now, she would fall asleep in this pool of red. Maybe when she woke up, all the blood she had left would be blue.“
I won’t elaborate on what the symbolism is because of spoilers, but it is based on symbolism used in normal speech, so you could figure it out if you wanted to lmao
These are actually such great questions to get to know people, @luckycatsidereus is it okay if I just ask some other people to answer them instead of coming up with my own (boring) questions??
I don’t know many people so I’m going to tag some people from my dash and hope that’s okay (feel free to not participate in the tag!) @cjjameswriting @supersaiyansadie @scripturient-manipulator @nicholewrites ?? @sweetcatminteareblog I would always tag you but please don’t feel pressure to keep responding LMAO

Sous-estimer l'ordre à vos risques et périls, Kevy insouciant avertit MSI Rivals G2 Esports, génies maléfiques
"Ce qui doit arriver arrivera."
Star ORDER jungler ~~Spike Spiegel~~ Shane “Kevy” Allen has just lost a League of Legends solo queue game when he joins our Discord call. He quickly laughs the loss off—“You know, what can you do?”—and immediately starts talking MSI hopes.
Now, League pros have lost more ranked games than most players have queued up to play, so it’s no surprise, but that’s Kevy to a note. Like anime’s enigmatic Space Cowboy Spike Spiegel, the Aussie star is happy to roll with the punches. He tells me, again: “I just think, whatever happens, happens.”
This time, he’s talking about the Mid-Season Invitational.
Next week, starting 8pm Tuesday, May 10 (AEST, this is), Kevy and ORDER begin their international campaign. It’s a tricky challenge first up. G2 Esports, reigning European champs and 2019 MSI victors, await in game 1. The LEC heavyweights are dripping with League royalty, including Rasmus “Caps” Winther and Kevy’s personal pick of the litter, Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski, among others.
The going doesn’t get any easier for ORDER on their Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday play-days either. In fact, Riot short-changed Group C due to an odd number of League representatives traveling to Busan, Korea. That leaves the aforementioned G2 powerhouse, ORDER, and first-time LCS champions Evil Geniuses to duke it out across a four-time round robin. Plenty of chances for spankings, say the pundits. “Plenty of time for upsets,” says Kevy.
Underestimate ORDER at your peril, the LCO jungler warns.
“Our whole run [this split], even back in Oceania, everyone keeps thinking we can’t or won’t win,” Kevy tells Dot Esports. “And look, we came out and ended up winning. It takes the pressure off us, being expected to lose.”
Kevy has enjoyed a certain underdog status with ORDER throughout his fledgling League career thus far. He burst onto the Oceanic scene in 2021 as the Melbourne org’s replacement jungler after short-gasp stints with Dire Wolves and Peace to start the year. By the end of Split Two, the 21-year-old had been crowned Rookie of the Year, First All-Pro Jungler, and the region’s Most Valuable Player.
And now, he’s got another chance to push the League envelope all over again. Riot Games, via the MSI 2022 draw, have handed him G2 and EG on a silver platter.
“I couldn’t have dreamed a better draw,” he admits.
“Like, obviously we could have gotten easier teams to play against, an easier group, but really I’m happy with this. I’ve been wanting to come to international events for so long, now that we’re here I want to show what I can do. Even just in terms of entertainment value, the chance to dish out some salt too.”
The pressure, Kevy adds, is entirely on G2 Esports and Evil Geniuses.
“Honestly, if either of the two even drop a game to us… damn, they’re going to get roasted. It’s really nice to be in this position. We’ve not played a game yet and everyone is writing us off. No one expects anything from us.
“Forget the standings—I just see EG and G2. If we win, that would be absolutely crazy, so there’s that. And then if we lose, then we know that we tried our best.”
youtube
Kevy’s ever-cool mentality certainly worked in LCO 2022 Split One. Eventual champs ORDER lifted from a staggered 11–10 record to sweep Dire Wolves, Peace, Pentanet, and Chiefs—four of Oceania’s six historic representatives. Even on the eve of the grand finals, fans, players, and pundits were tipping against ORDER.

University entrepreneurship — without the university
Eric Tarczynski Contributor
Eric Tarczynski is the Managing Partner at Contrary, a network-driven venture firm backed by founders from Facebook, Tesla, and many others.
Across the country, university campuses are in limbo.
The California State University system has committed to online classes in Fall 2020. Northeastern University is reopening as normal. UT Austin is taking a hybrid approach: in-person classes until Thanksgiving break, then online classes during flu season.
This presents a special set of circumstances for university entrepreneurs. The traditional resources and networks are nonoperational. But time and focus, historically the most scarce resources for ambitious students, is now at an all-time high.
It’s often noted that both Facebook and Microsoft were started during Harvard’s Reading Period, a week where classes are cancelled to let students study. This spring has been like one long Reading Period, sometimes with even less responsibility.
Deprioritizing classes
Stanford undergraduate Markie Wagner is taking advantage of the mandatory Pass/Fail policy that the school adopted. Since grades are no longer a consideration, Markie and her friends have free rein to put classes on the back burner to focus on talking to entrepreneurs and experimenting with business ideas.
She told us, “I’m going full hackathon mode this quarter. I’ve been reaching out to lots of founders and VCs to learn from them.” Planning on spending her upcoming senior year building a company, she’s getting a head start on exploration and network building.
If the pandemic forces school closings for the long-run, however, students will have to deal with more than a semester with an easier course load.
There’s near-universal resentment toward the idea of paying full tuition for online classes. Many of the students in Contrary’s network are planning gap years. Or, like Austin Moninger, even skipping senior year altogether. A senior at Rice studying computer science, he originally intended to graduate in spring of 2021. But given the virtual nature moving forward, he decided to accelerate graduation and is currently pursuing full-time software engineering roles. He notes, “We’ve all learned that we’re really paying for the experience and the network at the end of the day, so without it, I might as well take my time and money elsewhere.”
This puts universities in a precarious position: They must choose between letting students take breaks and defer admissions, which risks class size or financial issues (as an example, Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business decided against this, refusing to allow students to defer), or pushing forward at full price and risking brand damage.
That said, some students are affected by shutdowns or online classes more than the schools themselves are. Research-focused entrepreneurs working in biotech, hardware or other sectors typically require expensive lab equipment to make progress. Pure software plays like Facebook and Snap usually come to mind first when talking about university entrepreneurship, but such lean operations are certainly not the only ones being built.
It’s also unclear how prolonged closures or online classes will impact education itself and how that will impact founders in the long run. Most founders have completed the majority of their degrees by the time they commit to their companies and attempt to raise money. We have not seen any meaningful skill gap in 2020, nor do we expect to throughout the rest of the year.
Unless building a deep-tech startup, company-building can continue as long as an entrepreneur has enough of a technical or financial foundation to self-educate and learn by doing. Malwarebytes CEO Marcin Kleczynski is an excellent example of this — he famously started his cybersecurity company as a freshman at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and did the bare minimum required to get C grades in school.
Virtualizing campus
Although seed funding for university entrepreneurs has not slowed down since school closings, company-building has certainly not gotten any easier.
The main challenge for 22-year-old talent is not having energy or being scrappy — it’s usually growing the network needed to recruit the right co-founder and hire an early team. In an on-campus environment, there’s enough serendipity to make this natural. But if school closings persist and virtual offerings don’t fill the vacuum, we’ll likely see a lag in new company formation.
It’s rare that founders embark on the startup journey without having known each other for at least a year. Right now, not enough time has passed to make this a problem. But at campuses where students can’t get to know peers at a deep level, it’s impossible to build bonds over a long time period.
To combat this, at Contrary, for example, we hosted a virtual community of founders this past spring with a simple premise: Put 100 people in a room (or Slack channel, more literally), make sure they spend time together and give them the tools to build.
Over the course of six weeks, 150+ collaborations occurred as people experimented on different ideas and projects. Seventy-five percent of the founders said they’d been more productive since the remote transition occurred, and at the end of the program, nearly 70% of the group planned to continue working on their companies or begin a fresh project.
Perhaps most notable is the diversity of connections made — most interactions between participants were between students enrolled in different schools. Since even the best institutions in the world each matriculate only a single digit percentage of talent nationwide, virtualizing the program made the talent pool far larger.
Successful entrepreneurs like Steve Huffman from Reddit and Paul English from Kayak (and now Lola) gave off-the-record talks, but it turned out that most of the value came from access to a highly curated group of peers that each member wouldn’t otherwise meet. The program forced the serendipity that school closures lost, then combined that with the other necessary ingredient: Tangible opportunities to build rather than talk.
You can treat a university like a bundle of tools: The education, network, credential and social learnings all compose into one holistic experience.
Over the past decade, much of that value-stack has been eaten by other organizations.
To prove that you’re a talented individual, you can try applying for the Thiel Fellowship, or lean on name-brand past internships. Or to learn about venture, you can read Scott Kupor’s book or Paul Graham’s blog.
Until very recently, the university’s main “network effect” was the fact that you had to be there to meet other great individuals. Since COVID-19 has shifted most interactions to the cloud, however, that’s no longer the default path.
Looking forward
Hopefully flattening the curve will soon become extinguishing the curve. But until then, university-based founders will have to focus on the alternative infrastructure that powers funding, networking, credentialing and learning.
Had Contrary, Slack, Y Combinator or free AWS credits not existed prior, the closure of schools may have dealt a death knell to founders. But given the abundance of options now available to plug into the Valley and build, surprisingly little has changed.

“What Else Do You Plan On Doing At Noon?” A UFC Fight Pass Extravaganza Extraordinaire From Poland
Joey
October 18th
The UFC returns to Fight Pass with a very Fight Pass-y card with a very non Fight Pass-y main event. The card itself from Poland is.....a thing. It is for sure an MMA card with fights on it featuring fighters who plan on fighting. It's not very good and is buoyed by the allure of seeing European fighters on home soil (so to speak) with the hopes of maybe catching a glimpse of a new European prospect worth following. With Marc Diakiese and Tom Duqeuesnoy both slipping on banana peels, Europe could use something of note to get giddy over in the UFC. If you cut this card off from fights 12 to 2 then your interests would be limited to seeing a lot of newbie European prospects, some proven established guys trying to get their careers right like Marcin Held, Andre Fili, Artem Lobov, Jan Blacowicz or you're just a really big fan of Karolina Kowalkiewicz. When you look at that main event? Well things get a hell of a lot more interesting. Donald Cerrone vs Darren Till is a really great fight, pitting a proven top 5-10 welterweight against one of the more intriguing prospects in the world. It's what's sort of symptomatic of a UFC card these days; what happens below the main event is nice and all but if you deliver on the main event then more often than not people will care. This main event is great and so this Polish card, filled with so much fluff, has a place in our MMA calendar.
Fights: 12
Debuts: 7  (Aspen Ladd, Salim Touahri, Ramazan Emeev,  Jodie Esquibel, Oskar Piechota, Adam Wieczorek and Nasrat Haqparast)
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 6 (Dmitrii Smolyakov OUT, Anthony Hamilton IN vs Adam Wieczorek/Przemysław Mysiala vs Jimi Manuwa cancelled/Michal Materla vs Thiago Santos cancelled/Teemu Packalen OUT, Nasrat Haqparast IN vs Marcin Held/Trevor Smith OUT, Sam Alvey IN vs Ramazan Emeev, Jim Wallhead OUT, Sali Touahri IN vs Warlley Alves)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 7 (Donald Cerrone, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Jan Blachowicz, Marcin Held, Anthony Hamilton, Artem Lobov, Lina Lansberg)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC:  7 (Donald Cerrone, Marcin Held, Jan Blachowicz, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Anthony Hamilton, Warlley Alves, Jonathan Wilson)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC:  2 (Darren Till, Devin Clark)
Stat Monitor for 2017:
Debuting Fighters (Current number: 29-26)- Aspen Ladd, Salim Touahri, Ramazan Emeev,  Jodie Esquibel, Oskar Piechota, Adam Wieczorek and Nasrat Haqparast
Short Notice Fighters (Current number: 17-28-1)- Anthony Hamilton, Salim Touahri, Sam Alvey, Nasrat Haqparast
Second Fight (Current number: 23-33)-  0
Cage Corrosion (16-8-1)- Jonathan Wilson
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1- I wonder if people realize that Donald Cerrone vs Darren Till is a very intriguing fight on paper with the potential to see a new welterweight star emerge win or lose. Darren Till has been hidden on Fight Pass cards but if you look at him as a fighter, there's a lot to be excited about. He's a big tall striker who uses his length well, carries power in just about anything he throws, seems to be capable of winning wherever the fight takes place and most of all, he's got this tremendous confidence about him at such a young age and such a young part of his MMA development.  He has flaws (his kicks are definitely sub-par, his offense comes and goes and his reliance at times on chin and guts are worrisome) but his strengths match up very well against Cerrone's weaknesses. By now we all know what Donald Cerrone is. At this stage in his career, he's just a really good fighter across two weight classes who may never challenge for a title but will always be in the proverbial mix. Cerrone's love of action fights and his penchant disregard for his own health is what has made him a star but at this point, we may be approaching the "it's a hindrance" danger zone----guys like Matt Brown, Jorge Masvidal and Rafael Dos Anjos have all put him in bad spots while Cerrone has run through the likes of Rick Story, Patrick Cote and eventually finishing Brown. I don't think he's cooked but shopworn may be fair enough. It's a very young raw fighter versus a proven veteran perhaps on the decline.
2- Sometime this week I plan on giving Darren Till's UFC fights a second look but one thing I know is he has a very powerful sharp jab. That has not been a punch that Cerrone has seen well in his fights. The question is whether Till has it in him to commit to the body where Cerrone has had some problems in the past.
3- Cerrone has said he's already penciled in for UFC 219 so who makes sense? That's late December in Vegas and most of the big names are tied up in the division. It can't be RDA (we've seen that failure twice), can't be Lawler (just did it and booked), guys like Masvidal, Perry, Thompson are all tied up next year. You've got Carlos Condit tied up with Neil Magny which is a fine little fight. Colby Covington and Maia are tied up as well. I don't know if they're ready for Usman to face Cerrone but that'd be a great fight for Kamaru Usman and a good way to maybe make a star. Is it Thiago Alves?
4- Artem Lobov vs Andre Fili is one of those fights where on paper skill to skill you figure Lobov has no shot but he somehow makes it competitive. Fili's a very weird fighter, sort of a bust as it pertains to TAM prospect status. Sometimes he looks very good on the feet and other times he's getting boxed up by Calvin Kattar. Sometimes he looks great on the ground and then Godofredo Pepey is submitting him. He's dominating Hacran Dias and then he's getting smelted by a short notice dude. On the other hand Artem Lobov is consistent; a C- athlete with an A+ camp, cardio and gameplan. He's the Prospect Killer----but is Fili even a prospect these days?
5- I wonder if Michal Materla and company looked at how Jan Blachowicz has done in the UFC and that led to the decision for those guys to just stick around in KSW. Blachowicz entered the UFC with a bang by KOing Ilir Latifi but since then he's looking at a 1-4 record in the org. Now to his credit, I bet that if you took most guys and put them up against Jimi Manuwa, Corey Anderson, Igor Pokrajac, Alexander Gustafsson and Pat Cummins in a row their record wouldn't be that much better than 1-4. Blachowicz has been in just about every fight they've put him in but athletically and cardio wise, he just lacks the key elements needed to beat those kind of fighters with regularity. He draws Devin Clark who has been hidden on Fight Pass a la Till but like Darren Till, he's showcased some intriguing skills. Devin Clark is the sort of fighter who Clark's lone loss is a really rough one to Alex Nicholson (the typical "I was winning before I lost" type deal) and since then he's been more cautious in his fights vs relatively poor competition. Blachowicz can't lose this one at home or risk winding up back in Poland for good----which might not be too bad for him actually.
6- The women's bantamweight division has been a bit of a dead zone recently with no real names popping up worthy of fighting for the title (seriously who would fight Nunes if the UFC had to give her a fight right now?) so Aspen Ladd figures to be a welcome sight for sore eyes. I don't know if she's got a high upside but gimme all the new 135ers  you can find.
7- Marcin Held is 0-3 in the UFC and the last fight had to be the most crushing of his defeats. He was well on his way to a decision win before  Damir Hadzovic wrecked his night with a knee on a desperate shot attempt. Held is getting a short notice opponent but a guy that European MMA fans seem to have high hopes for Nasrat Haqparast. He's 22 years old fighting out of Germany and training out of Kings MMA, one of the best gyms in all the land.
8- Is Damian Stasiak the best male Polish fighter in the UFC?
9- Oskar Piechota is on the main card for a reason and perhaps, dare I say, it has something to do with him being a 20-something year old local guy with a really sparkling record. He draws Johnathan Wilson, an intriguing raw 205er who is moving down to 185 lbs.
10- Sam Alvey is going to have 30 UFC fights before 2019 starts. He faces Ramazan Emeev who I know a little about mainly due to his M1 ties. Emeev is just one of those guys who has that typical Russian record where he's beaten some guys you know and lost to some guys you know.
11- Warrley Alves looked to be on the verge of becoming the next big thing in Brazil but alas and alack. He comes into this fight on a two fight losing streak where both fights revealed some very, very concerning issues regarding his upside. His cardio seems to falter in tougher fights and he is the eternal front runner; a guy who starts hot and wilts at the first sign of pressure. It happened vs Alan Jouban, Bryan Barberena and while Kamaru Usman just sort of took him out of the game from the jump, Alves didn't do much after the fact to halt that slide. Alves draws another short notice opponent in Salim Touahri.
12- The UFC deserves credit for putting Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a position to succeed in her backyard. That's not something they do often but it's absolutely perfect business.
Must Win
1- Donald Cerrone
I suppose we can begin with Cerrone who after two straight losses is looking to find a place in the UFC's crowded 170 lb division. Cerrone is the sort of fighter capable of getting hot in a hurry, pulling off some massive winning streak and flirting with a title shot situation. Darren Till presents a collection of stylistic challenges for Cerrone which will test just how much he's got left in the tank going forward.
2- Karolina Kowalkiewicz
Karolina Kowalkiewicz seems stuck on the lower half of the top 5 in this 115 lb clusterfuck (Joanna then Andrade then Gadelha then Karolina then Rose/Waterson/Calvillo) but it's worth remembering she decisioned the current #1 contender and had Joanna Champion all kinds of hurting. She's been a fine fighter but these past two fights she's looked like a fighter woefully out of place against the elites outside of one round vs Joanna. Now having said that, I'm curious to see if a serious step down in competition plus fighting at home can spur her back into the winner's circle.
3- Marcin Held
It's obvious or dare I say readily apparent that the UFC sees something in Held worth trying to figure it out. He's 0-3 coming off a highlight reel finish loss but he's back in Poland for one more crack. There's no fourth chance for Held and he's getting a short notice opponent AT home so this is a can't lose type scenario.
Five Can’t Miss Fights
1- Donald Cerrone vs Darren Till
The main event is by far and away the best fight of the night and may be the best fight until TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt in a few weeks.
2- Oskar Piechota vs Johnathan Wilson
I haven't given up yet on Johnny Bravo and Piechota has some real high upside.
3- Artem Lobov vs Andre Fili
Lobov is all excitement and Fili fights with a very Dr Jeckyl/Mr Hyde style of performance so you need to at least see it. Lobov is going to make Fili fight so if you want a wacky races type brawl, this is one of the candidates.
4-  The first round of Sam Alvey vs Ramazan Emeev
Sam Alvey fights outside of the first round tend to be dull and fruitless endeavors so you've got one round for magic.
5- Lina Länsberg vs. Aspen Ladd
Lansberg has exciting violent fights and Ladd may be the next top prospect at 135 lbs so there's really no reason to not check this one out.

The first image that comes to mind when I think of Cary Grant is the classy gentleman that ultimately became his signature style. Most brilliant of all in Grant’s impressive repertoire perhaps was his ability to add the bumbling to the suave sophisticate. That’s the man I adore, but that man didn’t come about easily. It was hard work and perseverance that led to the archetype that’s still recognized as the domain of just one man. One.
Cary Grant was born Archibald Leach in Bristol, England on January 18, 1904. From 1932 to 1966 he appeared in over 70 motion pictures becoming one of the greatest movie stars in the world. Ever. And that’s not an exaggeration as you well know. Beloved and admired by the masses and his peers Grant mastered various film genres turning in memorable performances in broad comedies, murder mysteries, adventure stories and romances.
On that road to becoming Cary Grant the image, Cary Grant the actor played men with numerous careers and from different walks of life. It’s quite the impressive resume, one that goes well beyond a gorgeous exterior. Why don’t I show you?

“The greatest leading man to ever appear on the silver screen.” – Aurora
“You see, he didn’t depend on his looks. He wasn’t a narcissist, he acted as though he were just an ordinary young man. And that made it all the more appealing, that a handsome young man was funny; that was especially unexpected and good because we think, ‘Well, if he’s a Beau Brummel, he can’t be either funny or intelligent’, but he proved otherwise” – George Cukor
He received a special Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1970. The inscription on his statuette read “To Cary Grant, for his unique mastery of the art of screen acting with respect and affection of his colleagues”. On being presented with the award, his friend Frank Sinatra announced: “It was made for the sheer brilliance of acting … No one has brought more pleasure to more people for so many years than Cary has, and nobody has done so many things so well”.

As I perused Cary Grant’s filmography for this post I noticed a few things I’d never realized. The first is that there are far too many Cary Grant movies I’ve yet to see. Then I noticed that Cary Grant never made a science fiction movie, which is interesting. In addition, Mr. Grant never made a Western. Huh. It seems he did forge a few Western connections, however. For instance, Grant appeared as himself in a cameo in Mervyn LeRoy’s Without Reservation (1943) starring Claudette Colbert and Westerns legend, John Wayne and he turned the Northwest upside down in Hitchcock’s 1959 masterpiece.
Anyway, no one can dispute Mr. Grant’s versatility as his resume illustrates. When one thinks of a “Jack of all trades” it’s usually followed by “master of none,” a person who can do passable work at various tasks, but does not necessarily excel at any of them. That is not Cary Grant. Cary Grant excelled at everything he attempted in the movies, which is why the mark he made is still felt. As film critic and historian David Thomson states in The New Biographical Dictionary of Film – Cary Grant “was the best and most important actor in the history of the cinema.” I’ll add that it was due to his versatility and the persona that is forever defined by only him that his importance as an actor and film icon never diminishes. There is only one man who has a resume like Cary Grant. When asked, “who is today’s Cary Grant?” filmmaker, Robert Trachtenberg who made Cary Grant: A Class Apart replied, “No one.”
NO ONE.
Happy birthday wherever you are.
*Notes: Mr. Grant’s film roles are separated by categories of my choosing in the resume. Keep in mind that there are quite a few instances where roles (categories) overlap. As such any number of roles can be noted under a few categories, but I chose not to repeat movies.
