When I started looking for a new job, I saw an opening and decided to apply,” said Balijepalle, a senior database administrator working at the Airspace Operations Laboratory (AOL) at NASA Ames.   Eight and a half years later, she supports the researchers and developers who research next-generation solutions to advance aircraft technology and air traffic management.  A journey into the unknown  Balijepalle’s journey to NASA started thousands of miles away. She grew up in a small town in southern India, studying electrical engineering in college and establishing a career in information technology, working in C++ and Python.  When her husband found a job opportunity in the United States, Balijepalle’s life took an unexpected turn.  “I never planned to move to America,” said Balijepalle. “It was not easy to come here, even though my husband had a job. I stayed in India for almost nine months, before he found a different job that would help us with my visa and documentation.”  After settling into her new country, growing her family, and developing in her new career, Balijepalle began to ponder her dream job at NASA. She and her younger daughter, a fellow space fan, enjoyed talking about the agency’s work in space, and when a Linux administrator position opened up, she jumped at the chance.  A dream job becomes reality  At the lab, Balijepalle was initially responsible for managing the lab’s Linux servers and applications. Today, she also supports researchers and developers with development, automation, and deployment of their work.  “Latha is the lifeblood of the lab,” said Jeff Homola, co-leader of the Airborne Operations Laboratory at NASA Ames. “Without her unwavering dedication to making sure our systems are safe, secure, up to date, and running smoothly, we would not be able to do what we do in the lab.”  One of Balijepalle’s proudest achievements during her NASA career is her language skills. Growing up, she spoke Telugu and Hindi, and learned English, but communication was still a challenge when she arrived at NASA.  “I spoke English when I came to America, but not as well, and not using the technical language we use at NASA,” said Balijepalle. “I’m proud that I’ve improved my communications skills.”  “Step outside your comfort zone”  Looking back on the commute that changed her life, Balijepalle says she owes it all to being up to the challenge.  “I wasn’t a risk taker, I didn’t think about stepping outside my comfort zone, but as I drove by NASA Ames each day, I started to think about astronauts. They step outside their comfort zone and leave the planet, so maybe I could take a risk, too.”  For those who also dream of working at NASA one day, Balijepalle has some advice: try doing it her way.  “Start thinking about it and manifesting your dream. Maybe it will come true, and maybe it won’t, but you might as well try.”  Share Details Last Updated Dec 23, 2024 Related TermsAmes Research CenterGeneral Explore More 16 min read NASA Ames Astrogram – December 2024 Article 3 days ago 5 min read NASA’s Ames Research Center Celebrates 85 Years of Innovation Article 3 days ago 3 min read NASA’s Webb Reveals Smallest Asteroids Yet Found in Main Asteroid Belt Article 3 days ago Keep Exploring Discover More Topics From NASA Missions Humans in Space Climate Change Solar System

Green Synthesis of Fe3O4 Nanoparticles from Alternanthera Philoxeroides
Tumblr media
Abstract
Iron oxide nanoparticles, notably magnetite (Fe3O4), have become widely used and a key topic of research due to their superparamagnetism and distinctive features. As a result, scientists are diligently looking into new uses for these nanoparticles. The choice and use of synthesis techniques are important variables that might affect the size and characteristics of the nanoparticles (NPs). The use of harmful compounds that are absorbed on the surface of the nanoparticles has been linked to a number of negative impacts of chemical production processes. The Green synthesis of nanoparticles has evolved as an eco-friendly method in response to environmental concerns, giving researchers the chance to internationally investigate the potential of various herbs for nanoparticle synthesis. The aqueous extract of Alternanthera Philoxeroides leaves and the precursors ferric chloride anhydrous (FeCl3 anhydrous) and ferrous chloride tetrahydrate (FeCl2.4H2O) are used in this study to demonstrate a green synthesis approach for manufacturing magnetite nanoparticles. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and UV-visible spectroscopy were used to evaluate the produced FeNPs. The presence of functional groups including (-OH), (C-H), and (-NH) was detected in the FTIR findings, showing that organic compounds had been coated on the FeNPs. A maximum absorption peak was detected in the ultraviolet-visible spectra of the aqueous media containing iron nanoparticles at about 330 nm. The magnetic characteristics of the produced FeNPs were verified by VSM testing. Numerous uses for these nanoparticles exist, such as waste water treatment, energy production, and others.

Introduction
Nanoparticles have seen an increase in demand in recent years, due to their use in various fields, including health, catalysis, energy, and drug delivery systems (Nam et al., 2009; Li et al., 2011). The physical, chemical, optical, and electrical properties of these nanomaterials are significantly influenced by the size, shape, and surface morphology of the nanoparticles. Various techniques, including physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, the solgel method, co-precipitation method, ultrasonic method, electrochemical synthesis, and chemical reduction of metallic ions, are used to create metallic nanoparticles (Horwat et al., 2011; Sobhani et al., 2011; Starowicz et al., 2006). These Syntheses frequently involve toxic, expensive, and unsustainable substances. Due to the simplicity of synthesis, environmental friendliness, and increased stability of nanoparticles, green synthesis approaches based on fungus, microbes, plant and peel extracts are currently being investigated (Balaji et al., 2009; Kumar et al., 2011; Sukirtha et al., 2012).
Tumblr media
Because of their high saturation magnetization, Fe3O4 MNPs are simple to magnetically separate in an external magnetic field (Mohamed et al., 2017). Several studies have been done on the synthesis of MNPs using a variety of reducing agents, including hydrazine (Hou et al., 2005). Dimethyl formamide (Jian et al., 2006). Sodium borohydride (Cain et al., 1996). Carbon monoxide (Mondal et al., 2004) and others. The biocompatibility of MNPs is hampered by these highly reactive reducing agents, which also have negative environmental impacts. As a result, there are only a few bio-medical uses for chemically reduced MNPs. MNPs must be strictly biocompatible in order to be used in biomedical applications. Several research using plant extracts to synthesize Fe3O4-NPs have been successful. For instance, Artemisia annua fruit extract (Basavegowda et al., 2014). Perilla frutescens leaf extract (Basavegowda et al., 2014). Tridax procumbens (Senthil et al., 2012). Caricaya papaya extract (Latha et al., 2014). Plantain peel extract (Venkateswarlu et al., 2013). Grape proanthocyanidin seed extract (Narayanan et al., 2012). In the leaf extract, there are a number of polyphenols and acidic compounds available. These Polyphenols from the extract form complexes with metal ions and show both reducing and capping behavior for NPs Senthil et al., 2012. Also, these polyphenolic compounds are biodegradable, nontoxic, and water-soluble at room temperature, which proves that green leaf extract as an effective reducing agent compared to others (Latha et al., 2014). According to the literature analysis, no specific studies have been conducted on the synthesis of Fe3O4-NPs using the alligator weed Alternanthera Philoxeroides, which encourages and pushes us to work on this. We have developed a modified green synthesis method to prepare Fe3O4-NPs using green Alternanthera Philoxeroides extract as a reducing agent, a novel environmentally friendly technique for producing Fe3O4-NPs is suggested in this study.

Miznhad, Co. Cork.

(Mythological commntary undr th radmor)
I was abl to tak ths picturs and train as a Clticist bcaus of th passion and ddication of my mntors and collagus in my MA dpartmnt. If you njoy ths photos, plas considr signing this ptition to sav th Bachlor Cltic at Utrcht, which is still taking signaturs.
This was...probably a mor difficult ntry to mak than I thought it would b. I know popl probably votd for it on th ida of 'R lovs Brs and R lovs Balor, so this should b an asy post for thm to mak!' But it's...almost spcifically BCAUS I'm so motionally invstd that I struggl to mak it. Ar popl looking for an acadmic, objctiv account for this? Ar thy looking for prtty photos? Both? Ys? No?
But...wll. You all votd for this in a poll postd by m, knowing my intrsts, so you knw this wasn't going to b 100% objctiv, ithr. So...lt's gt into it.
Whn I visitd Miznhad, it was th culmination of ovr a dcad of draming of gtting to s it in prson.
Many Amricans, whn thy go to Irland, hav a crtain ida of what thy want to s, what thy want to do. This can rang from th Book of Klls to Irish run brwris to th Blarny Ston to th Cliffs of Mohr to half-forgottn familial holdings to Cong, whr Th Quit Man (starring John Wayn and Maurn O'Hara) was shot (sidnot: that villag is also clos to whr th First Battl of Magh Tuiradh, i Cath Muigh Tuiradh Cunga, took plac.) For m, whn I first got off th plan to Irland, I knw that this was a sit that I dspratly *ndd* to s (bsids, of cours, my uni), and that was Miznhad. In th old days, of cours, it wasn't calld Miznhad, it was calld Carn uí Nit, or "Th Gravsit of th Grandson/Dscndant of Nt" (th 't' was softnd to a 'd' as tim wnt on, lading to its modrn form of Carn uí Nid.) Somtims, I still forgt to call it by its mor wll known anglicizd nam, maning that I'm constantly having to clarify, bcaus that's th nam I hard first, and it's th nam that rings trust to m.
According to th Dindshnchas of Cairn uí Nit, writtn th bttr part of a millnnium ago c, this was th spot whr Brs Mac latha did at th hands of his rival, Lugh, bing trickd undr gas to swallow ovr 300 vats of bog watr, in th guis of milk.
A dindshnchas pom dtails th most wll-known story associatd with th sit, as it was known in th Middl Ags (translatd, in a styl a littl too flowry for my tast, by dward Gwynn, but, if I want to b honst, it has takn m too long to gt this out as it is and I know that if I translat th ntir thing, it will NVR gt don) :
[...]
6. Brss, a kindly frind was h, (h was a good frind) nobl h was and fortunat, ornamnt of th host, with visag nvr woful, of th Tuath D h was th flowr. (Not: th BST, what wr you DOING Gwynn, lay off th mdival chivalry)
7. Th drink of a hundrd for ach roof-tr was brought to th chiftain without fail, of th milk of dun-hud kin: h suffrd from that far.
8. In th rign of Nchtan bass-chain, of dar fam, of nduring purpos, at th cost of th King of th two Munstrs, occurrd th caus of th nduring nam.
10. Th kin of vry townland in Munstr — lasting harm! — by Nchtan's ordrs wr singd, ovr frns, till thy wr black of hu.
11. A mss of ashs was smard by th notd mn of cunning on th kin famd for fatnss [...]
12. Thy fashiond stout kin of wood — that whol host nobl and slndr: Lug, who was dutiful on all occasions, chos thm and brought thm togthr.
13. Pails in thir forks wr st with chrful nimblnss; rd stuff, with no bright shining fatnss, that is th milk that filld thm.
14. Thr hundrd, that was thir numbr on th road to that gathring: at this contst, through his chating illusion, thr was not a cow of ths kin aliv.
15. Brss, hot of valour, cam to th middl of th fild to judg thm: thrby, without prosprous issu, h prishd and did.
16. From th drov wr masurd thr hundrd masurs, bittr-harsh, for th spar-attndd king to drink: it was a prparation of ill-prsag.
17. Brss had a vow not to rfus any fat that was offrd him: h drank it off without flinching: I know not what it brings.
18. At th Carn of radiant Ua Nit it killd th strn scion, whn h had drunk without drad a draught of th dark ruddy liquor
19. By rason of this unfair dmand, without du obsrvanc sinc th failur of his vow, without rightful and smly honour th grav of Brss covrs him.
Stoks providd an dition and translation of th pros vrsion from th Rnns Dindshnchas:
Thn Brs cam to inspct th mannr of ths cattl and so that thy might b milkd in his prsnc, and Cian (Lugh's fathr) was also among thm. Ail th bogstuff thy had was squzd out as if it was milk of which thy wr milkd. Th Irish wr undr a tabu to corn thithr at th sam tim, and Brs was undr a tabu to drink what should b- milkd thr.
So thr hundrd bucktfuls of rd bogstuff ar milkd for him, and h drinks it. Som say that h was svn days and svn mouths and svn yars wasting away bcaus of it, and h travrsd rin sking a cur till h rachd th sam cairn, and thr h did. Whnc Carn uí Nit is namd.
In othr txts, th ownr of th grav is changd: In th arly Modrn rcnsion of CMT, Cath Muigh Turiadh, it is actually Balor's dath sit, not Brs', Lug hunting his grandfathr across Irland until thy hav thir fatal showdown thr. John Cary, in "Myth and Mythography in Cath Maig Tuird", has argud that th attribution of this sit to Brs was actually aftr th fact, with th attribution to Balor bing th arlir of th two. On th rcord, I agr, on th basis that (1) Brs' usual haunt is Maginnis, in what is now Lcal, Co. Down and (2) Balor is consistntly rfrrd to as "Uí"/"Ua Nit", unlik Brs who, outsid of this pom, is gnrally rfrrd to purly as "Mac lathan."
Gnrally spaking, Brs is not th figur from Cath Maig Tuird that most acadmics will say that thy lik, whn thy'll admit that thy *can* lik any of th charactrs, byond a dtachd sns of gnral intrst. Th boistrous Dagda, th hauntd and mbattld Nuada, th xmplary Lug all gathr far mor positiv ractions. On an ancdotal not, though, I'v had a numbr of ovrwhlmingly qur popl, usually in thir lat tns or twntis, approach m ovr my tim doing this, and tll m how important Brs was to thm, how intrsting. Brs taps into somthing that, prhaps, many oldr acadmics, who ar usd to th rigid structurs of acadmia, do not want to acknowldg: a willingnss to dfy socity, to rbl, to qustion. Th fling of bing torn apart by compting forcs, of bing conflictd, of bing frightnd and lonly. Th fling of bing watchd, of bing judgd, of bing a playr in a gam by much oldr, much mor xprincd popl, but still trying to play it anyway, vn if h floundrs in his xcution. Bcaus th truth is that Lug is asy to lik, particularly in Cath Maig Tuird whr h's at his last manipulativ. H can do vrything! H unifis popl! H's charismatic! H's dutiful! H dos vrything xactly as h's supposd to and, as a rsult, has all th motional dpth of a thimbl. (I lik him bst whn h's taking bloody rvng, whn th mask of th idal hro coms off and h's allowd to b a littl bit mssy.) With Brs, thr is no illusion that h's prfct, that h's flawlss. No on finishs rading CMT and thinks that, rally, it would hav bn bttr off for vryon if Brs had won. Not many of us can b Lug, but all of us hav bn Brs at on point or anothr, th qustion is simply whthr w want to admit to it. All of us hav falln short, at som point or anothr, all of us hav disappointd somon, including, at tims, ourslvs. All of us hav watchd as somon cam onboard -- mayb thy wr youngr, bttr with popl, mor comptnt, naturally talntd, and lft us in th dust. It's why popl com away from Amadus sympathizing with Saliri, bcaus, at som point in our livs, w all vnrat th Patron Saint of Mdiocrity.
In an acadmic nvironmnt, I'm oftn askd why I'm so drawn to Brs. Th truth is that thr ar vry fw acadmic xplanations that can fully xplain it. Th answrs that I giv -- th complxity of his charactr, th insight h can giv as an antisocial charactr, th parallls h has to Lug and to th broadr world of th Tuatha D -- ar not lis, but thy can't fully captur th rality, ithr. In truth, th rlationship I hav with Brs isn't dvotion, not in a rligious sns, at  last, but it is th sort of pur bond you can only form with somthing whn you'r a tnagr, grasping for a pic of driftwood to cling onto through th wavs of adolscnc. H's bn with m vry singl stp of th way, in all his flaws and all his thoughtlssnss, his mlodrama, his rashnss. H tlls m that somtims, I don't nd to b prfct, I just nd to surviv. What it mans to mbrac liminality, vn whn socity dmands that w b boxd into nat littl catgoris. H savd my lif. In many ways, h gav m a lif worth living. And, in turn, I crossd an ocan for him. I facd down a pandmic for him. I facd down hll for him. All to stand at his gravsit. I don't know if my pagan frinds ar right and that th Tuatha D's prsncs still lingr in Irland; I'v nvr sn any caus to bliv it, but, frankly, I'v studid thm long nough to know not to tmpt fat on that scor. I don't know if thr vr is or was any trac of th man who I'v spnt so long studying that still lingrs. I don't vn know if anyon ls vr stood by that cliff, looking down in th cobalt blu watrs, th whit tippd wavs crashing against th rocks that jut out from Manannan's kingdom, and took a momnt to think of him. Or what thoughts migrants might hav thought as thy lft in ships and, all too oftn, nvr saw thir hom country again, th grasping rock thir last sight of thir country. But I do know that on on autumn day, an Amrican intrnational studnt stood thr and finally, finally took th chanc to thank him for vrything h'd don and to tll him that it was nough.

Mizenhead, Co. Cork.
Photos mine
(Mythological commentary under the readmore)
I was able to take these pictures and train as a Celticist because of the passion and dedication of my mentors and colleagues in my MA department. If you enjoy these photos, please consider signing this petition to save the Bachelor Celtic at Utrecht, which is still taking signatures.
This was...probably a more difficult entry to make than I thought it would be. I know people probably voted for it on the idea of 'R loves Bres and R loves Balor, so this should be an easy post for them to make!' But it's...almost specifically BECAUSE I'm so emotionally invested that I struggle to make it. Are people looking for an academic, objective account for this? Are they looking for pretty photos? Both? Yes? No?
But...well. You all voted for this in a poll posted by me, knowing my interests, so you knew this wasn't going to be 100% objective, either. So...let's get into it.
When I visited Mizenhead, it was the culmination of over a decade of dreaming of getting to see it in person.
Many Americans, when they go to Ireland, have a certain idea of what they want to see, what they want to do. This can range from the Book of Kells to Irish run breweries to the Blarney Stone to the Cliffs of Moher to half-forgotten familial holdings to Cong, where The Quiet Man (starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara) was shot (sidenote: that village is also close to where the First Battle of Magh Tuireadh, ie Cath Muighe Tuireadh Cunga, took place.) For me, when I first got off the plane to Ireland, I knew that this was a site that I desperately *needed* to see (besides, of course, my uni), and that was Mizenhead. In the old days, of course, it wasn't called Mizenhead, it was called Carn uí Néit, or "The Gravesite of the Grandson/Descendant of Nét" (the 't' was softened to a 'd' as time went on, leading to its modern form of Carn uí Néid.) Sometimes, I still forget to call it by its more well known anglicized name, meaning that I'm constantly having to clarify, because that's the name I heard first, and it's the name that rings truest to me.
According to the Dindshenchas of Cairn uí Néit, written the better part of a millennium ago c, this was the spot where Bres Mac Elatha died at the hands of his rival, Lugh, being tricked under geas to swallow over 300 vats of bog water, in the guise of milk.
A dindshenchas poem details the most well-known story associated with the site, as it was known in the Middle Ages (translated, in a style a little too flowery for my taste, by Edward Gwynn, but, if I want to be honest, it has taken me too long to get this out as it is and I know that if I translate the entire thing, it will NEVER get done) :
[...]
6. Bress, a kindly friend was he, (he was a good friend) noble he was and fortunate, ornament of the host, with visage never woeful, of the Tuath De he was the flower. (Note: the BEST, what were you DOING Gwynn, lay off the medieval chivalry)
7. The drink of a hundred for each roof-tree was brought to the chieftain without fail, of the milk of dun-hued kine: he suffered from that fare.
8. In the reign of Nechtan bass-chain, of dear fame, of enduring purpose, at the cost of the King of the two Munsters, occurred the cause of the enduring name.
10. The kine of every townland in Munster — lasting harm! — by Nechtan's orders were singed, over ferns, till they were black of hue.
11. A mess of ashes was smeared by the noted men of cunning on the kine famed for fatness [...]
12. They fashioned stout kine of wood — that whole host noble and slender: Lug, who was dutiful on all occasions, chose them and brought them together.
13. Pails in their forks were set with cheerful nimbleness; red stuff, with no bright shining fatness, that is the milk that filled them.
14. Three hundred, that was their number on the road to that gathering: at this contest, through his cheating illusion, there was not a cow of these kine alive.
15. Bress, hot of valour, came to the middle of the field to judge them: thereby, without prosperous issue, he perished and died.
16. From the drove were measured three hundred measures, bitter-harsh, for the spear-attended king to drink: it was a preparation of ill-presage.
17. Bress had a vow not to refuse any feat that was offered him: he drank it off without flinching: I know not what it brings.
18. At the Carn of radiant Ua Neit it killed the stern scion, when he had drunk without dread a draught of the dark ruddy liquor
19. By reason of this unfair demand, without due observance since the failure of his vow, without rightful and seemly honour the grave of Bress covers him.
Stokes provided an edition and translation of the prose version from the Rennes Dindshenchas:
Then Bres came to inspect the manner of these cattle and so that they might be milked in his présence, and Cian (Lugh's father) was also among them. Ail the bogstuff they had was squeezed out as if it was milk of which they were milked. The Irish were under a tabu to corne thither at the same time, and Bres was under a tabu to drink what should be- milked there.
So three hundred bucketfuls of red bogstuff are milked for him, and he drinks it. Some say that he was seven days and seven mouths and seven years wasting away because of it, and he traversed Erin seeking a cure till he reached the same cairn, and there he died. Whence Carn uí Néit is named.
In other texts, the owner of the grave is changed: In the Early Modern recension of CMT, Cath Muighe Turieadh, it is actually Balor's death site, not Bres', Lug hunting his grandfather across Ireland until they have their fatal showdown there. John Carey, in "Myth and Mythography in Cath Maige Tuired", has argued that the attribution of this site to Bres was actually after the fact, with the attribution to Balor being the earlier of the two. On the record, I agree, on the basis that (1) Bres' usual haunt is Maginnis, in what is now Lecale, Co. Down and (2) Balor is consistently referred to as "Uí"/"Ua Néit", unlike Bres who, outside of this poem, is generally referred to purely as "Mac Elathan."
Generally speaking, Bres is not the figure from Cath Maige Tuired that most academics will say that they like, when they'll admit that they *can* like any of the characters, beyond a detached sense of general interest. The boisterous Dagda, the haunted and embattled Nuada, the exemplary Lug all gather far more positive reactions. On an anecdotal note, though, I've had a number of overwhelmingly queer people, usually in their late teens or twenties, approach me over my time doing this, and tell me how important Bres was to them, how interesting. Bres taps into something that, perhaps, many older academics, who are used to the rigid structures of academia, do not want to acknowledge: a willingness to defy society, to rebel, to question. The feeling of being torn apart by competing forces, of being conflicted, of being frightened and lonely. The feeling of being watched, of being judged, of being a player in a game by much older, much more experienced people, but still trying to play it anyway, even if he flounders in his execution. Because the truth is that Lug is easy to like, particularly in Cath Maige Tuired where he's at his least manipulative. He can do everything! He unifies people! He's charismatic! He's dutiful! He does everything exactly as he's supposed to and, as a result, has all the emotional depth of a thimble. (I like him best when he's taking bloody revenge, when the mask of the ideal hero comes off and he's allowed to be a little bit messy.) With Bres, there is no illusion that he's perfect, that he's flawless. No one finishes reading CMT and thinks that, really, it would have been better off for everyone if Bres had won. Not many of us can be Lug, but all of us have been Bres at one point or another, the question is simply whether we want to admit to it. All of us have fallen short, at some point or another, all of us have disappointed someone, including, at times, ourselves. All of us have watched as someone came onboard -- maybe they were younger, better with people, more competent, naturally talented, and left us in the dust. It's why people come away from Amadeus sympathizing with Salieri, because, at some point in our lives, we all venerate the Patron Saint of Mediocrity.
In an academic environment, I'm often asked why I'm so drawn to Bres. The truth is that there are very few academic explanations that can fully explain it. The answers that I give -- the complexity of his character, the insight he can give as an antisocial character, the parallels he has to Lug and to the broader world of the Tuatha Dé -- are not lies, but they can't fully capture the reality, either. In truth, the relationship I have with Bres isn't devotion, not in a religious sense, at  least, but it is the sort of pure bond you can only form with something when you're a teenager, grasping for a piece of driftwood to cling onto through the waves of adolescence. He's been with me every single step of the way, in all his flaws and all his thoughtlessness, his melodrama, his rashness. He tells me that sometimes, I don't need to be perfect, I just need to survive. What it means to embrace liminality, even when society demands that we be boxed into neat little categories. He saved my life. In many ways, he gave me a life worth living. And, in turn, I crossed an ocean for him. I faced down a pandemic for him. I faced down hell for him. All to stand at his gravesite. I don't know if my pagan friends are right and that the Tuatha Dé's presences still linger in Ireland; I've never seen any cause to believe it, but, frankly, I've studied them long enough to know not to tempt fate on that score. I don't know if there ever is or was any trace of the man who I've spent so long studying that still lingers. I don't even know if anyone else ever stood by that cliff, looking down in the cobalt blue waters, the white tipped waves crashing against the rocks that jut out from Manannan's kingdom, and took a moment to think of him. Or what thoughts emigrants might have thought as they left in ships and, all too often, never saw their home country again, the grasping rock their last sight of their country. But I do know that on one autumn day, an American international student stood there and finally, finally took the chance to thank him for everything he'd done and to tell him that it was enough.

Nethra moved in on Vel from across the room, his arms folded across his chest. He wore a subtle smile as he spoke. “I heard you were looking for me.”

‘👄 + character name’ and my muse will say if they find them attractive. ─ @nehalam
“Is it really so surprising I would think so?” Solas shrugged as if the confession meant very little to him. It was just an aesthetic observation, not unlike a remark on one of his murals. “You come from an attractive lineage. Anyone with eyes could see your strong features.”

@lathsuledin | lathas lavellan | the exact opposite of a simple starter
This was his OWN FAULT, really--- Anders flying FAR TOO CLOSE to the sun by allowing his curiosity to draw him here in the first place. He had successfully blended in, so it had seemed; the blond just another mage among the hundreds that were displaced by the war. Another one of many who had made the pilgrimage to Skyhold after word of the Inquisition’s alliance with the mages and the following destruction of Haven spread through the remaining camps that dotted the wilderness, only THIS one not entirely afraid to lend a healing hand when no one else seemed to offer their assistance once inside the fortress's walls. This innate connection to the Fade was his only positive talent in the end, his proficiency as a Spirit Healer the only abilities that he possessed that still stood far above everything else he had done with his gift. The only good he, for a very long time, thought himself capable of. And how AT HOME he felt--- only when surrounded by cots full of the wounded. And no one questioned it, from the non-mage herbalists to the crude surgeon, desperate and over crowded with patients as they were, when the only quiet explanation he offered was that he himself was a healer before the war.
It was like this he had stayed for nearly two weeks--- the mage selectively mute in a sense, mustering conversation only when absolutely required, and, above all else, distancing himself from those who would otherwise recognize him if by not sight, then voice alone. He was oh so careful, doing his best not be seen in the courtyard by those who likely knew him without the hood and cloak that covered half his face and figure--- the minute terror gripping his heart when he had spied an all too familiar dwarf just days prior. And it had WORKED, by some slim chance. No one paid him any mind, beyond those he helped, and he was left mostly to his own devices. Just another mage among the compound. Undiscriminated against, treated as an equal by mages and non-mages alike. The experience helped to solidify the growing seed of HOPE in the blond, one that had sprouted forth with news of the Inquisition finally picking the only side in the war that ever really mattered. Anders was content enough with it as a start, the twisted spirit that dwelt deep within his core seemingly sated as well for the time being. He could have easily left at any point after this, after all he doubted the existence of a single person who would stop him yet... Instead he sought to linger, finding relief in the the buzz of his surroundings after spending so much time alone with nothing but his own thoughts. And... after all, there was still justice to be had and he was extremely aware of it-- the concept nagging at the back of his mind. Almost inviting it, even, in staying here this long. A GRAVE MISTAKE perhaps, or even a GRANTED WISH, given the figure that had just settled into a seat beside him.
The tavern should have been safe, Anders foolishly taking a seat right at the bar despite his tendency to nurse a single drink for hours while caught up in his head. He had made a scant amount of acquaintances, other mages okay with his silence if it meant that they could go on for hours with someone to actually listen to their woes, and he had gotten into the habit of expecting them. Instead... he got THIS. A delicate elf to the blind, UNEDUCATED eye: pale skin, hair as white as sun bleached bone, slender figure... And mage to boot, but no mere former circle apprentice--- Dalish, he believed. The person who ultimately had drawn everyone here. The Herald. The Inquisitor. He could hardly help himself, casting a NERVOUS GLANCE at the younger male's profile from under a mess of long, strawberry blond locks as his shoulders reflexively stiffened. Fingers stained green from elfroot gripped tighter around the tankard before him, the mage’s lips setting into a hard line. The SPARK of his anxiety causing the spirit within him to rouse, Vengeance's frantic whispers permeating his thoughts with words he did best to ignore. But there was nothing stopping him, was there? From standing up and moving elsewhere? Only how suspicious, most people surely had NO PROBLEM welcoming the Herald from what he had seen from prior distance...

A Prince and His Swan Prologue
Tumblr media
Words: 1.5k
Warnings: Minor Mention of injury and death
Off we go! Thanks again to @flamencodiva for being Beta and @beskaradberoya for her dividers!!
Tumblr media
Sam Winchester and Odette Y/L/N had been friends since they were children. Odette was the only daughter of a widowed king, and Sam was the youngest of King John and Queen Mary of the neighboring kingdom across the oceans. King John and Odette’s father had constant talks of joining their kingdoms during their children’s infancy. It was decided that every summer, Dean, Sam, and Odette would spend the summers together in the hope that Odette would fall in love with one of his sons.
Each summer passed with its own challenges. Odette was polite with the palace staff, while Dean and Sam caused havoc around the palace. John sighed one afternoon as he and the other adults sat around the table playing cards. “Well, at least the children seem to be getting along.”
“Don’t worry, John, this arrangement will click with one of them, I promise.” “It’s a perfect match” Odette’s Father smiled over at the other monarchs,
“Sam, she’s making me play dress up,” Dean groans as Sam shakes his head. “At least she’s not beating you at cards. This is the fifth hand she’s beaten me at.” Odette giggled as she lay out her winning hand.
The summers passed, and before long, all three children were grown. Dean had already had his 18th birthday celebration, and now it was Sam’s turn.
“Father, please, put me down! This is just another ball that I’d rather not be a part of!” Odette argued as she watched all the eligible women and princesses in the kingdom approached the steps of Winchester Castle.
“Odette, my darling child, this match between you and Sam is perfect. You two got along so well all these past summers. Surely you must care for him.” Odette’s father says gently. The father and daughter had a close relationship ever since Odette’s mother had passed at the time of her birth. Sure Odette had her tutors growing up, but she and her father were incredibly close. The elder monarch pulled out a black velvet box and revealed a gold chain, and at the end of the beautiful chain, hung the image of a swan carved into the gold locket.
“Papa, it’s beautiful…” Odette gasped as her father reached around to clasp the golden chain around her neck. The gold accessory shimmered in the light of the hallway, but the symbol of a swan reminded her of her mother as it was her favorite animal.
Tumblr media
Down the hall, Sam sighed as he straightened his dress clothes. Clearly, this was a ball set to become an engagement party as his mother had insisted on him wearing the nicest outfit he had. Dean, who was adamant of making sure his little brother wasn’t late, walked over to help him. “Seems like mom invited half the kingdom and all the most abundant amount of single princesses in this kingdom and the next one over,” Dean says chuckling, This made Sam roll his eyes at the elder sibling.
“Maybe I don’t want to settle down yet, Dean. There’s so much of the enchanted forest I haven’t gotten to explore yet. I’ve wanted to visit Snow and Charming, but I haven’t had the time since Mom is so insistent that I get married. She didn’t force you to get married,” he added as an afterthought. Dean scoffed and shook his head. This was true, he wasn’t being forced into a marriage, and he’d thought he would be, given the fact he was the oldest of the Winchester princes.
“You’ll have time for that and so much more, Sam, I promise. Have I ever steered you wrong before?”
Sam let out a sigh, Dean was right there. In being the eldest, he always gave the best advice. Sam gave his brother a friendly smile and nodded. Dean pulled Sam in for a hug and patted him on the back. “Come on, there’s a ball, with food, drink, and women” Dean smirked, saying each word slowly and his grin grew with each word before he was out the door.
Meanwhile, Queen Regina Mills was working on a curse of her own across the enchanted forest, but she was also in contact with the witch that presided over the Winchester Kingdom. Rowena Macleod. Before Sam and Dean were born, Rowena had a decent relationship with King John and Queen Mary, but she was banished immediately when the boys were about a year old when she was discovered working with dark magic. Rowena and Regina had been friends when they were younger.
Rowena snuck inside the palace walls, her dark emerald cloak kept her hidden in the shadows, smirking as she spotted the royal family as well as Princess Odette. Rowena had spies hidden within the palace who would provide her with intel regarding the goings-on at the palace. t wasn’t that hard to figure out the fact that Prince Samuel had a soft spot for Princess Odette Y/L/N.
Tumblr media
The growing crowd made it easier to allow Rowena to lurk throughout the party with ease, the entire ballroom filled with gasps and murmurs as Odette made her way into the room. Rowena cleared her throat as she tried to gather Sam’s attention, bowing into a low curtsy, she smiled and stood looking at him, rumor around the palace is that you and Princess Odette are to be engaged, what with you being childhood friends and all,”
Sam nodded hearing Rowena, but he wasn’t truly listening to her. Catching Y/C/H out of the corner of his eye, the prince turned to see her come down the stairs and just looked in awe. How did the annoying child he and Dean had grown up with become someone so beautiful…Sam moved to push past Rowena, moving to stand in front of Odette, smiling as they were standing in the middle of the room, giving her a low bow. In-kind, Odette curtsy’s back.
Without a second thought, Sam was inching towards her and his hand rested on the back of her neck before pressing his lips to hers gently, which to the parents of the pair, made them elated, a loud cry filled the room from King John.
“Arrange the marriage between Prince Samuel and Princess Odette.”
As the words echoed in her ear, Odette pulled back and looked in shock. “What? I-I don’t understand…”
Sam pulled Odette over to a corner so they were alone somewhat. “I don’t understand what the problem is.” “Why do you want to marry me? Because we’re told do, or are you willing to marry me of your own choice.” “Well, you are really beautiful…” Sam says trailing a bit. “What else?”
This made Sam blink a bit. After a moment of hesitation, Odette scoffed and gently pushed past him to leave. “Papa, I’d like to go home.”
Rowena stepped out into the crowd and her red hair was vibrant against the castle light. Her voice was low and she was laughing while the words left her mouth. Eyes gazed upon Odette and her elder father.
“adhair, uisge, teine, talamh gabh an nighean seo agus thoir dhomh mo mhallachd. Air an latha eala air an oidhche na bana-phrionnsa, cha bhi i gu bràth leis an fheadhainn air a bheil gaol aice, gus an tèid fìor ghaol aideachadh aideachadh le fuil.”
Which translated to; ‘air, water, fire, earth take this girl and give her my curse. By  day a swan  by night a princess, never shall she be with the ones she loves, until true loves confession be spoken with blood.’
Tumblr media
Odette’s father moved to pull his daughter behind him after the curse was spoken. John was shouting for his guard to seize Rowena and make sure she was exiled like she should have been. The entire ballroom left the palace in a rush, Odette and her father being pushed along in the crowd. Climbing into their carriage, they rushed towards their kingdom and, hopefully, safety.
The following morning, Sam and Dean were in the library, trying to remember the words to Rowena’s spell the evening before. Rowena being the cunning witch she was, was able to escape and cause an ambush on Odette and her father’s carriage, taking Odette with her where Sam would not be able to find her, leaving the golden necklace in the road. “Sam, you, for the record, are an idiot,” Dean says to his younger brother, who simply glared at him. “‘ Is beauty all that matters,” he says trying to mimic Odette’s tone and rolled his eyes, “and you simply respond with, “What else is there?!’”
“Thank you, Dean, for reminding me for the second time this morning and last night,” Sam snapped, looking up as the head of the guard burst through the library wounded just as Sam was on the page where the spell would be translated. “Hey, Hey, you're alright? What happened?”
“Princess Odette’s carriage was attacked on the road, her father is dead…”
“What?!” Dean gasped. In the guard's hand was Odette’s necklace. Both brothers looked up as a storm was seeming to come in out of nowhere. “What the hell is that?” Sam says. “A wall of purple smoke?”
“That would be Queen Regina’s doing,” Rowena smirked as she stood in the library. See you boys soon, though, you probably won’t remember me anyway.” She chuckled as the smoke enveloped the palace.

Reading List 2020
Tumblr media
One of my resolutions for 2020 was to read a book per month to incentivize myself to actually finish books. I’m geeked I succeeded and ended up reading 14 books plus+++. Sometimes you just start to feel genuinely fucking dumb; then you know it’s time to create new habits and engage in new hobbies : )
I was able to find a lot of books for free--I’ve included links below.
January --
“The Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents” by Lindsay C. Gibson PhD truly fucked me up. Lots of highlighted passages. Being almost a year removed from the revelations that this book helped me have around my own family dynamic, I’m really thankful with the amount of actual peace and contentment I am able to feel now.
February --
“Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English” by Bhante Henepola Gunaratana is the follow-up to “Mindfulness in Plain English”. Very helpful for more advanced meditative techniques, particularly around the Jhannas. Also highlighted the fuck out of this book. Not much to say about the book itself, it is more about the advances in meditative technique that can be gained from using the advice in this book....uh is there a difference idk 8 ) let us chat abt it
March --
“Fever Dream”/”Rescue Distance” by Samanta Schweblin. It was aight! Read it in one sitting one night under the impression it was a genuinely scary horror short novel, but wasn’t really impressed as a horror nerd, though I do appreciate Schweblin’s stylistic choices.
April --
“Perfume” by Patrick Suskind is a banger and I look forward to the end of quarantine when we will all engage in an end-of-Perfume-level orgy together : )
May --
Tumblr media
“Chi no Wadachi” by Oshimi Shuuzou is genuinely the best manga I’ve read in a long time. It is an exceptionally well-executed psychological horror manga about an abusive mother and her son written by the same guy who made “Aku no Hana” (which I also read in May lol).
“Black Hole” by Charles Burns was both good and irritating! Really enjoy his artistic style. Could do without a huge percentage of his dialogue tho eheh.
June --
“How Nonviolence Protects the State” by Peter Gelderloss created a lot of space in my brain, which I think is the most valuable thing a book can give you--space from prior immediate cognitions. I started reading it because we live a few blocks away from where George Floyd was murdered; the way in which American (white) liberals choose to intellectualize violence and decide what an “appropriate” response is, when a vast majority of them never experience violence directly, esp at the hands of the state, is really telling of our collective psychological development as a country. ie our collective American ideology is always in support of the state. Let’s conceive of violence differently.
July --
“Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl” by Andrea Lawlor was rad. Just read it.
August --
“Audition” by Ryu Murakami -- this was a long time coming, I guess. I watched Audition when I was maybe 13 or 14? It is a genuinely good Japanese horror film and so I bought a copy before I lived in Japan hoping to read it there (uh i didn’t lel). It was a very fast read; the pacing was odd, and there was a lot of weird theorizing about trauma, and also lots of misogyny (I mean you’d think so). I honestly didn’t feel much once the book was over. The movie reigns supreme here.
“Capitalist Realism” by Mark Fisher was also a long time coming, glad I finally read it. rip Mark ;-; you would hate this timeline.
and 2 shorts, “Lone Shadow” by Mia Nie and “Lady of the Shard” by GiGi D.G. BOTh really gOOOD!!!1
Tumblr media
September --
“Kindred” by Octavia Butler was a ride.
“Chainsaw Man“ by Tatsuki Fujimoto (up to September) is just fucking so good, get Viz it’s only 2 or 3 bucks a month.
Tumblr media
October --
“The End of Policing” by Alex Vitale is essential reading.
November --
“From Here to Eternity” by Caitlin Doughty was an overall poppy (to be expected) but very interesting exploration of different cultures’ relationships to death. It is hard to imagine growing up in Indonesia, participating in Torajan mummification practices, keeping your deceased loved one dressed and housed indefinitely after death. This book made me want to read more anthropological and religious stuff again.
December --
“Consciousness: A Very Short Introduction” by Susan Blackmore is what it is! At times her writing style is overly wishy-washy and concluding segments often feel abrupt and not succinctly explained but it was short and an adequate primer.
Books I Read A Lorge % Of:
“On Violence” by Hannah Arendt
“What Terrorists Want” by Louise Richardson
“The Origins of Political Order” by Francis Fukuyama
“Imperialism: Past and Present” by Emanuele Saccarelli and Latha Varadarajan”
“Neuromancer” by William Gibson
*Hoping to finish all of these in 2021.

As 2019 ends, reptile-rich Sri Lanka delivers three more new gecko species
The first gecko, Cnemaspis kotagamai, or Kotagama’s day gecko, sports five distinct and irregular brown blotches on its back. The researchers consider it rather a rare species. In the isolated forested hill known as Bambaragala in the species-rich Ratnapura district, Sabaragamuwa province, where it was discovered, the team was able to record only five geckos.
C.kotagamai was named in recognition of the contributions to science made by conservationist and ornithologist Sarath Wimalabandara Kotagama, an emeritus professor at the University of Colombo and technical adviser to Sri Lanka’s Department of Wildlife Conservation....
For Karunarathna, who counts nearly two decades as a researcher, the new discoveries afforded a unique opportunity: to honor his parents for their support and encouragement throughout his career. Hence C. dissanayakai, or Dissanayaka’s day gecko, is named after his father, Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Karunarathna.
“My father was one huge source of inspiration. He did everything possible to ensure that I achieved my dreams. I would not have been able to pursue my interest in wildlife research and conservation without him,” Karunarathna said.
This diminutive gecko is dull brown in color, and resembles the known species C. kumarasinghei and C. latha. Also range-restricted and considered critically endangered, it was discovered in an isolated hill forest in Dimbulagala in Polonnaruwa district, North Central province, where tropical dry-mixed evergreen forests abound.
The third new species, C. kawminiae, or Kawmini’s day gecko, is named after Handunnetti Kawmini Mendis — “the person who gave me my life: my mother,” Karunarathna said. C.kawminiae was discovered on a moss-covered granite wall in Mandaramnuwara, bordering the Piduruthalagala Mountain Range, home to the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, nestled in the cool and hilly Nuwara Eliya district in Central province.

Annamayya telugu movie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He would personally feed them and would take care of their welfare. He took up a three-story bungalow in Calcutta and housed the children there during the shooting. Pullayya was not just the director but became the de facto father of the children, whom he and his wife Rangamma looked after like their own during the shoot of Anusuya. Pullayya who hailed from Kakinada has the credit of being the first director to make a film with children which was considered a revolution in those days. Even here the lead actors were children, with the other roles essayed by adults, but the seeds of a full-blown children’s film were laid with ‘Sati Anusuya’ĭirected by C Pullayya again, he was considered a genius with his experience in the fields of film presentation, production, and directing since the silent era. The lead child artists (Master Bhimarao, Master Malleshwara Rao) who acted as Lava and Kusa - both became stars overnight thus paving way for the children’s film in India. Ramayana-based story 'Lava-Kusha' is the first box office hit in Telugu. The Calcutta-based East India Film Company had already made two Telugu talkies, 'Sati Savitri' (February 5, 1933) and 'Lava Kusha' (December 22, 1934), where both were directed by Chittajallu Pullayya (Pullaih were super hits and made huge profits. Producers in Bombay and Calcutta studios were mostly making films in Telugu. It completed 50 days in 92 centres and 100 days in 60 centres.Children’s Day 2021 Special: The first Children’s film in India was made in the year 1936 and the notable fact was that it was two Telugu films titled 'Sati Anusuya' and 'Dhruva Vijayam' which heralded the era of Children's films in the country.ĭuring the initial days after the silent era of movies ended in our country and the talkies had hit the silver screen, the first full Telugu talkie 'Bhakta Prahlada' (Februand where the lead was a child) was released. The film had collected a distributors' share of Rs.16 crore in the initial two weeks after its release. The track "Hima Seemallo", sung by Hariharan and Harini won the Nandi Award for Best Playback Singer, Male for Hariharan. Mani Sharma composed the songs, while Veturi, Bhuvanachandra, Jonnavittula and Vennelakanti penned the lyrics.
Mamilla Shailaja Priya as Priya, Soundarya's friend.
Soundarya as Gajjala Kanaka Maha Lakshmi Devi.
Chiranjeevi as Rajaram (Aathmaram in hallucination).
The film ends with all the three brothers getting married Rajaram with Devi, Ravi with Latha, and Gopi with Geetha. In the ensuing melee, Rangarao is killed. Rangarao is the brother of Chinna Rao, a criminal who was caught in the police dragnet with Rajaram's help and later died. A furious Rajaram goes to Rangarao, who reveals his real identity.
Tumblr media
The brothers escape death and land in a hospital with injuries. Rangarao has other plans and tries to have them killed with gundas. This brings about a total change in them and the repentant duo go to Rangarao to restore the property to their brother. She, being in the know, slaps them and opens their eyes by informing them of his sacrifice. Piqued at being kicked out of home, his brothers, unaware of his hand in securing the partnership for them, nurse a grudge against their brother and insult Rajaram in Devi's presence. Rajaram, who is genuinely fond of his brothers, sells away his property and gives money secretly to Rangarao, paving the way for a partnership deal between Rangarao and his brothers. The two brothers being state rank holders in engineering find favor with a businessman, Rangarao, who employs them. An outraged Rajaram kicks his brothers out of home. She insults him and leaves with her sisters. But the incorrigible brothers come in an inebriated condition for their engagement and Rajaram faces the brunt of Devi's ire. Since then on he is more exacting with his brothers and brings about a transformation in them. Rajaram reacts sharply to it and vows to get his brothers married to her sisters. But she curtly refuses her consent on grounds that the two are wayward drunkards. On his brothers' request, Rajaram approaches Devi for her sisters' hands in marriage to his brothers. With more such incidents, the two fall in love, with the brothers and sisters not far behind. Rajaram takes the incident lightly as the pranks of youngsters and is very lenient with them. After that acquaintance, she once seeks his help in dealing with two street ruffians, who were teasing her sisters, Lata and Geetha, and is shocked when the culprits turn out to be his brothers, Ravi and Gopi. Rajaram, owner of a fleet of lorrie, meets Devi, a garment factory owner.

"A staff? Is this what they were after?"
“Most likely,” Ny’Ari kneeled next to the corpse. Two painted fingers pulled it’s eyelids down -- a silent prayer to whatever being watched this world to let them make it safely beyond the fade. Promptly, she began going through the fallen mages pockets in search of an answer.
“The fact that people kill each other for trinkets will never cease to amaze me,” She continued, pulling out coin and potions and placing it to the side for Lathas to do what he would with it.
“Why do they not ask nicely first? ‘Hey, can I have this staff?’ before attacking. Not blades drawn and rushing forward. They could have said Yes...”
