â Spotted on the Upper East SideâŠ
Name: Crystal Abrams Pronouns: Up To Player Age: 22 years old Hometown: Brooklyn, NY Occupation: UTP Social Status: Outsider Faceclaim suggestion: Kiersey Clemons
Who Is Crystal?
âBe soft. Do not let the world make you hard.â
Crystal Abrams... I admit, youâve managed to stay successfully off my radar. What have you been doing all this time? Watering your plants? Fighting injustice? You are good at just, well, getting on with it. You do have a soft spot for strays though, that much is obvious - people and puppies. Youâre too kind for your own good but then again, mommy and daddy did teach you to put others before yourself. When youâre not giving away your last dollar to someone less fortunate, treating yourself to another totally necessary pair of overalls, youâre trying to find yourself. The world is a big place and thereâs a thousand things you could do. A little overwhelming, no? Iâm sure youâll see the bright, hopeful side of it. So, whatâs pulled you into my eye line? Vanessa, of course. Youâre a pacifist until it comes to voicing your opinion on younger siblingâs, ah, new found friend group. Iâm sure this year is going to be fun for us. Speak soon. XOXO ---Gossip Girl
A Little Extra
UTP (two paragraphs of biography; helpful key points listed below - message if youâd like to make any changes or not in the app if you would rather the bio written up for you!)
Crystal is very much influenced by their parents, Gabriela and Arlo, who are a pair of humanitarians. Vanessa often argues they care more about other people (strangers) than their own children but Crystal gets it. Big picture, right? The âgreater goodâ. Crystal volunteers whenever possible and shares their parents beliefs on a lot of topics including not believing in private schools (hello, education should not be for sale).
Needless to say, Crystal is definitely not one to support the âscandalous eliteâ. In fact, if it werenât for Vanessa becoming overnight besties with Serena van der Woodsen, they wouldnât have given the Upper Class another thought. Crystal isnât sure they like who Vanessa is becoming, or might become, if they keep hanging out with the likes of Serena and Co.
Is currently trying to keep the stray cats and dogs they keep taking in a secret from the Landlord. And the minor (major) DIY changes Crystalâs made to the apartment. Oh, and this one hole in the bathroom wall that ended up there after a party... Oops.
Has always been a very chill, very aloof, older sibling to Vanessa and is grateful theyâve always been good at taking care of themselves. Was happy to let V move in when they wanted to come back to Brooklyn. Crystal does miss the days of it just being them, eating bad takeout and badmouthing Danâs private school.
Is the worldâs best bargain hunter and owns way too much denim. Can sew (mostly little flower designs), paint, dominates at DIY and will defend this one greasy diner around the street from their apartment to the death.
What Does Gossip Girl Have On Them?
UTP (if applicable; alternatively you can note their thoughts on Gossip Girlâs return!)
Connections
Vanessa Abrams - the younger sibling. Theyâre close- used to be much closer, actually. Theyâre also roommates. With Vâs new UES friends seeming to be not a phase, things have started to get a bit tense between the two. Crystal is worried about them.
Michelle King - bestie! These two have been BFF since they were in high school, Freshmen year. Crystal loves Michelle so much, sheâs the funnest person that theyâve ever met.
Rylea Palmer - Crystal took Rylea in when she first came to the city at 17 after having been kicked out by her family. Theyâve been friends and roomies ever since.
Faith Mendez - theyâve been on a couple of dates but Faithâs a tough one to read, you know? Super pretty and interesting though. A future doctor too.
Dan Humphrey - Vanessaâs BFF/obvious major crush since forever. Crystal feels like theyâre watching a soap opera with them, waiting to see if V will ever spill their feelings.

SWÂ The Rise of Skywalker: my review (spoiler warning if you keep reading).
I want to start by saying that i enjoyed the movie more than i expected. Considering that i am neither a 100 years old hardcore fan nor totally new to the franchise, i can see the balance in the disney-abrams forces to make everybody happy. itâs the 2nd best movie in the sequel trilogy after TFA and handles most old characters in a way that is highly acceptable. with the new characters, thatâs a different thing. Rey is so much in the center (while also running in circles bc we are tricked to fear that she might become super dark) that Finn and Poe almost disappear in the very calculated action sequences as their only place in this. hinting at Poe being a smuggler in the past is no real character development in his present life. Finn could have been the core of a thrilling psychological plot and with Jannah in this film a reason to care about nameless troopers. maybe adding random encounters between the 2 and troopers who then start to break through the doctrines or programed thoughts of the first order. but the endless killing of nameless troopers continues like in every sw movie. what a wasted chance to go into areas of psychological thrillers. i wonât even mention the wasted chance and chemistry of FinnPoe...! but there is still light, c-3po is a real gem in this and while bb-8 gets much less screentime i also enjoyed his new buddy-droid. Leia... difficult to decide if the material filmed with Carrie was enough to give her a really memorable finale. partly yes, partly no. the best of all character arcs though is that of Kylo Ren. liked everything about it, but i think that some details that i read in online bts articles should have been put into the script. so we had good, few very good characters points, but what was the worst?! i think that nobody needed even more new characters (they donât talk much anyway) and it made no sense to bring back Darth Sidious or whats his name this late in the trilogy. he should have returned earlier, to aid the first order when it was beaten at that ice planet death star shit. here we have to believe that it took exactly that amount of time to have exactly that many destroyer ships (as if 20 ships less produced would be of no help for the dark factions) and that he waited exactly that long to talk to Kylo and make that offer of galactic dominance. wtf.
the visual style was often fine, but i love exotic scenery and this movie was the opposite for planet-travel. too much colourless or too dark and pseudo-spooky shit. even the old movies looked more alive than this one. the action was ok too, but felt very calculated from the start. the rey-kylo dueling, we have seen that already or a bit more thrilling. the tech blahblah that made hardcore fans furious... i donât care much about that aspect (or about the amount of laser jedi crystal shit to build the ship cannons!). so ships can do stuff that no ship has done before. like or dislike it, i care about the characters and drama that drive a plot forward/backwards. i was very touched by the final moments, giving Rey something to do/say that made her appear as her own person, not just a female version of a Luke character and her journey was concluded when she stepped away from any genetical and biological restraint or forced connection that plagued the entire saga. people were rarely somebody or a person based on their own choices, enough of that.
rating: surprisingly watchable (IF i avoid any fan debates), 3,8 of 5 stars.

Avoiding Conflict
"Abram said to Lot, 'Let's not allow this conflict to come between us or our herdsmen. After all, we are close relatives! The whole countryside is open to you. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want the land to the left, then I'll take the land on the right. If you prefer the land on the right, then I'll go to the left.'"1
Abraham (Abram) and Lot had been living together for some time; however, their possessions had exceeded the space available. This caused some quarreling between their herdsmen, and Abraham realized that the only way to avoid further conflict was to go separate ways. Abraham loved Lot and gave him the opportunity to choose his land first. Abraham was not concerned, but trusted that God was his provider, and he humbly accepted the land that was left. However, Lot made his decision based on what he saw⊠the grass may have looked greener near Sodom, but Lot was wrong. Unfortunately, this decision ended up causing Lot much grief, including being taken captive when Sodom was attacked. Even then, Abraham went with his men to rescue his nephew Lot. The sacrifices that Abraham made for Lot's wellbeing were a true example of humility, love, and teaches us how relationships are more important than arguing over material possessions or desires.
Imagine if Abraham would have joined in the conflict with his herdsmen against Lot. Things could have escalated and totally ruined the relationship between these two men. However, Abraham trusted God in all things and sought to have peace in the middle of a tense situation.
How do we handle conflict in our relationships? Are we quick to engage in arguments or do we seek to pacify the tension? Whether it be with family or friends, do we seek our own wellbeing above all else? Romans 12:18 reminds us to "Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone." How we respond in difficult situations can be one of the greatest testimonies of faith to those around us. Let us do all that is in our hands to honor God in all circumstances and trust that he will handle the rest.
Suggested prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I have put things or desires above the people in my life. Give me wisdom to avoid unnecessary conflicts and do all that I can to live peacefully with others and show them your love. In Jesus' name, amen.
Genesis 13:8-9.

17 Reasons Why You Should Ignore floor concrete finish
An additional key reward is that pervious concrete may be used, which removes the need to spot storm drains near the highway, and lowering the necessity for slightly sloped roadway to assist rainwater to run off. No more requiring discarding rainwater via usage of drains also indicates that less electrical power is needed (far more pumping is if not desired during the h2o-distribution process), and no rainwater will get polluted as it now not mixes with polluted h2o. Somewhat, it is immediately absorbed by the bottom. Energy efficiency[edit]

Analyzing the sort of stain  should help do away with it in a very faster fashion. Deciding the kind of concrete that should be cleaned will likely enable make the perform a good deal less difficult Because the appropriate sort of cleaning remedies can be utilized. This will likely avert harming the framework and might help eliminate the stain conveniently.

Swimming pool installation is meticulously planned by concrete authorities. The appropriate sort ought to be utilized to ensure that the pool is not going to leak. Good application should also be considered to be certain that the pool are going to be built employing minimum effort and hard work, costs and workforce. Shotcrete is frequently Employed in swimming pools since this type is usually applied employing tension.
An unwanted gradation can imply employing a massive combination that is too massive for the dimensions in the formwork, or that has too couple of smaller sized aggregate grades to provide to fill the gaps in between the larger grades, or using way too small or excessive sand for the same cause, or working with as well tiny drinking water, or excessive cement, as well as working with jagged crushed stone in lieu of smoother round aggregate including pebbles. Any combination of these things and Other individuals may perhaps result in a mixture that is much too harsh, i.e., which would not move or unfold out easily, is challenging to get into the formwork, and that's tricky to floor finish.[sixty three]
As soon as the concrete floors are already cleaned and stuck, it really is time to get started on the polishing method. This move will entail the usage of each a concrete grinder and various sorts of diamond abrasive discs. All expected devices can be employed from the machinery rental company.
Workability might be measured by the concrete slump examination, a simple evaluate of your plasticity of the clean batch of concrete pursuing the ASTM C 143 or EN 12350-two examination standards. Slump is normally measured by filling an "Abrams cone" that has a sample from a fresh batch of concrete. The cone is positioned Together with the extensive end down onto a level, non-absorptive surface area. It's then filled in three levels of equivalent quantity, with Each and every layer currently being tamped that has a metal rod to consolidate the layer.
Softer types will probably be much easier to drill given that they wonât just snap or crack. Far more solid ones will both be too tough to drill or will have the possibility to crack because it are unable to bend. Considering the categories that were Employed in creating the structures that must be drilled is one of the factors that professional concrete drillers are excellent at. This causes it to be superior to hire the pros in place of residence owners striving to perform the activity by do-it-oneself.
Hydration involves a number of reactions, normally occurring simultaneously. Given that the reactions carry on, the merchandise from the cement hydration procedure little by little bond together the person sand and gravel particles along with other factors from the concrete to form a strong mass.[40]
Therefore, it really is crucial that you seal a concrete floor just about every one to 2 years to shield it from stains. This is certainly the keyâand sometimes the only realâservicing prerequisite for concrete floors.
When mixture is combined with dry Portland cement and h2o, the combination sorts a fluid slurry that is well poured and molded into shape. The cement reacts With all the drinking water and other components to kind a hard matrix that binds the elements alongside one another into a durable stone-like substance that has several uses.
Structures utilizing Portland cement concrete generally include things like metal reinforcement for the reason that such a concrete could be formulated with substantial compressive toughness, but usually has decrease tensile strength.
The extensive-term toughness of Roman concrete buildings has actually been observed to become because of its usage of pyroclastic (volcanic) rock and ash, whereby crystallization of strĂ€tlingite (a specific and sophisticated calcium aluminosilicate hydrate)[22] along with the coalescence of this and similar calciumâaluminum-silicateâhydrate cementing binders served give the concrete a higher diploma of fracture resistance even in seismically Energetic environments.
Concrete is strong in compression, because the aggregate effectively carries the compression load. Nonetheless, it's weak in stress because the cement holding the aggregate in place can crack, enabling the framework to fall short.

The furnishings, paint and flooring Participate in an important role on your childâs safety. Itâs vital that the flooring doesnât comprise any destructive chemicals and may be straightforward to scrub way too. Luxurious vinyl flooring is a fantastic option to retain VOCs to an absolute minimum.

Concrete structures tend to be more immune to hearth than People constructed utilizing metal frames, given that concrete has reduce warmth conductivity than metal and might thus past lengthier under the identical fire problems.
Plasticizers may be used to reduce the water written content of the concrete while maintaining workability and are occasionally referred to as drinking water-reducers on account of this use. These treatment method increases its energy and longevity properties.

It has only been broadly utilised since the 1800s, even though. But nonetheless, no one can argue towards how long it has been in use. Itâs even now broadly made use of, meaning that it must be a fantastic materials. This is why itâs a well-liked possibility.
Slabs that are Utilized in commercial establishments and infrastructures need to be thicker. Slabs on residential houses is often thinner but the objective of the slab will even now figure out how slender the slab is usually. When the slab will likely be subjected to work with and abuse often or if it is going to have lots of bodyweight, It'll be produced thicker via the Skilled installers. Better good quality cement may additionally be employed to make sure that the slab won't are unsuccessful.
Workability may be measured from the concrete slump check, an easy measure on the plasticity of the contemporary batch of concrete subsequent the ASTM C 143 or EN 12350-two examination criteria. Slump is normally measured by filling an "Abrams cone" by using a sample from the fresh new batch of concrete. The cone is positioned With all the extensive finish down on to a amount, non-absorptive floor. It is actually then loaded in a few layers of equal volume, with Each individual layer currently being tamped that has a metal rod to consolidate the layer.
Nanoconcrete (also spelled "nano concrete"' or "nano-concrete") is a category of products that contains Portland cement particles that aren't any bigger than 100 ÎŒm[seventy six] and particles of silica no greater than 500 ÎŒm, which fill voids that would or else manifest in typical concrete, thereby considerably raising the fabric's strength.
Concrete with crystalline admixture can be expecting to self-seal as constant publicity to drinking water will repeatedly initiate crystallization to guarantee long-lasting water-proof security.
This a an incredibly labor intense position. I've stripped lots of floors in my twenty five years from the trades and this is no career for the 1st timer. In case you have a time-frame you are attempting to fulfill and you want a good complete then I'd employ the service of this a single out.
Sealing:Â The Achilles' Heel of concrete floors, particularly in the kitchen, is its porous floor, which is extremely prone to stains if it isn't sealed thoroughly.
Preventing freezing is An important precaution, as development of ice crystals can result in harm to the crystalline construction in the hydrated cement paste. In case the surface from the concrete pour is insulated from the outside temperatures, the heat of hydration will prevent freezing.
Concrete road paving can be achieved using various sorts of moaterials and thru numerous means. The most popular sorts of material used in street paving is asphalt. Bitumen replaces regular cement, creating the installation less costly and a lot easier.Fast-strength concrete is usually Utilized in highway paving as this sort can be utilized within just just a brief length of time.
Good elimination of concrete blocks must also be prioritized to be certain that the broken blocks are unable to hurt nearby establishments. This may also reduce accidents that can arise if the blocks drop on to the people focusing on the positioning.

â Spotted on the Upper East SideâŠ
Name: Vanessa Abrams Pronouns: She/Her Age: 19 years old Hometown: Brooklyn, NY Occupation: Amateur Filmmaker and Photographer, Waitress Social Status: Outsider (almost Insider) Faceclaim: Yasmin Finney
Who Is Vanessa?
âI may have created a medical grant for teens with genital herpies⊠in his name.â
You know there was a time when I didnât even know who the hell you were, Vanessa Abrams. I bet youâd like to go back to those days, wouldnât you? Oh well. Youâve always been opinionated, laid back and deeply empathetic. You really would solve all the worldâs problems if you could and you cannot stand injustice. You want to make a difference, make a stand, leave your mark in as many ways as you can. Itâs no surprise you didnât care much for the indulgent, lavish and catty lives of our Upper East Siders. You might truly be the polar opposite of everything they are. You might be quick to throw around harsh truths, lose your tact in the heat of the moment but Iâll admit... Youâre a good person. A little judgemental? Sure but you donât let it cloud your decisions. Some might think the UES would have chewed you up by now but no, youâve held your ground. I canât wait to catch up with you, V.
A Little Extra
Vanessa is, at her core, a creative soul. She longs to see every corner of beauty in the world, capture it on screen or film and share it with the world. She wants to see art that sets her heart and mind aflame, wants to be so inspired that she starts seeing the world through new eyes. Vanessa knows that the world is so much bigger than the little corner sheâs carved out for herself and she wants to see it. Touch it, breathe it in and everything in between. Of course, dreamer or not, she knows all about reality. Vanessa has her head on straight, knows you have to make a plan and save your dollars. That you have to work hard to earn things because no one is going to hand them to you, not without strings attached anyway. Vanessa has strong beliefs and is stubborn as hell but sheâs also fiercely loyal and very kind. Vanessa would give her last dollar to someone in need. With a soft heart and a sharp mind, she navigated the Upper East Side just fine. To be fair, Vanessa was quite content staying tucked away in Brooklyn, hanging out with her BFF Dan. Theyâd drink black coffee and judge the ridiculous kids at his fancy school together and thatâd be enough. Then somehow Dan managed to pull her into the world of snobbery and penthouse parties which is how she met the infamous Serena van der Woodsen. Vanessa wanted to be jealous, she really did. After all, no one could compete for Danâs heart like Serena but then Vanessa talked to her. Heard her. Found her charming and lovable and just a little bit of a mess and damn it all, she understood where Dan was coming from. From there V tried her best not to get involved with the drama, with Gossip Girl but she wasnât always successful. Still, she made it out fairly unscathed, backpacked around Europe and saved up for her BA in film (are still saving up). Being in Serenaâs world had its perks, naturally. Vanessaâs photography skills were noticed, cards were handed out. She just needs to keep reminding herself not to get sucked in, to do things her way before things end up a little bit of a mess, you know?
What Does Gossip Girl Have On Them?
Vanessa was in full support of the Gossip Girl takedown. Before she met some of the less despicable (oh, sorry, was that too harsh?) Upper East Siders, she would have called it ârich kid problemsâ. But V was a sucker for the cause. Her feelings for Dan were threatened to be posted about by GG but werenât. Thankfully Gossip Girl had ghosted by the time Vanessa hate hooked up with Chuck Bass because that is a secret sheâd like to take to the grave, thanks.
Connections
Crystal Abrams - her older sibling!
Dan Humphrey - Vanessaâs best friend and longest, most pineful crush but letâs not get into it.
Jenny Humphrey - Danâs little sister who she adores. Vanessa tends to be extra protective when it comes to Jenny even if they also want to be the âcool mentorâ type too.
Serena van der Woodsen - alright, sheâll admit it. Who isnât a little bit in love with Serena van der Woodsen? She swapped shoes at a party Vanessa shouldnât have even been at once and the rest is history. Unlikely pals if ever there were two.
Alex Vandervort - V and Alex became fast friends. From Alexâs attitude to her style, Vanessa liked everything about her from the start. Very supportive of the upcoming Baby Vandervort.

Star Wars 9 Trailer Breakdown: 8 Story Reveals About Rise Of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's new trailer reveals a lot of surprising details about the plot, as well as containing a few Easter eggs. Released at D23 Expo 2019, the footage is described as a "sizzle reel" but may as well be the film's second trailer.
The first teaser for Star Wars 9 dropped in April at Star Wars Celebration, showing all the returning characters, a few new ones, and confirming the return of Emperor Palpatine. It had been expected that the D23 footage would be a behind-the-scenes reel as it was for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but instead it contained what appears to be finished footage. Of course, irector J.J. Abrams is well-known for his Mystery Box approach to marketing, with trailers always tending to raise a lot more questions than answers - and that certainly the case with the Star Wars 9 D23 trailer.
Related:Â Every Star Wars 9 Reveal From the D23 Panel
The new footage is full of moments that have no context at all. Why does Threepio have red eyes? Why are Rey and Kylo Ren dueling on the wreckage of the Death Star on Endor? What's going on with that dark side Rey? Even the audio cues are mysterious. We'll answer all these questions (as best we can) and more in our Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker D23 trailer breakdown.

Lucasfilm is recycling old, unused footage in order to bring the late Carrie Fisher back as Leia Organa in Star Wars 9, and The Rise of Skywalker's D23 trailer includes one impressive shot of her stood on a jungle planet, likely saying goodbye to Rey (the pair were seen hugging in the same location in the teaser).
This image is a familiar one, originally seen as part of Vanity Fair's Star Wars 9 cover story back in May, and appears to have been taken from a scene towards the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Lucasfilm has added some digital touchups to make Leia look a little older, such as graying her hair along the sides and weathering her skin.

One of the most shocking moments in the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker D23 trailer for shows C-3P0 with red eyes. No context is provided for this shot, and it's hard to say exactly what's going on here; it certainly gives Threepio a rather sinister feel.
Related: Will Star Wars 9's Plot Mirror Guardians Of The Galaxy 2?
In the old Expanded Universe, a droid with red eyes had typically been hacked into, but it's unclear whether that idea still applies in new Star Wars canon. It could perhaps mean something a little more benign, such as Threepio having been given enhanced processing power for some reason. A potential poster showed Threepio with Chewie's bowcaster, so it's possible this is the lead up to an action sequence.

The Star Wars 9 D23 trailer shows a Death Star-type blast shooting an unknown planet. The novelization of Star Wars: The Last Jedi subtly hinted that the First Order had built more superweapons before revealing their existence to the galaxy, with Starkiller Base simply their biggest and most destructive. It's interesting to note that, while the trailer reveals a superweapon equivalent to the Death Star, it doesn't show the mobile battle station itself. There have been rumors that the First Order has installed Death Star superlasers into a new type of Star Destroyer (as they did the battering ram in The Last Jedi), and it could be that's what's shown here

As revealed in the Star Wars 9 teaser, the film will feature the wreckage of the second Death Star, likely fallen onto either the Forest Moon of Endor (possibly leading to a distinctly less green look). The Rise of Skywalker D23 trailer goes a step further and shows Rey and Kylo Ren fighting on a massive piece of the exterior as waves crash around them. Given the high intensity, this probably comes later in the film, making it a hint of not only the final fight in Star Wars 9, but the last lightsaber duel in the main Star Wars Saga. It also suggests that, whatever happens to the two characters, they will still be on opposing sides come the end.

Although Palpatine is confirmed to appear in Star Wars 9, the trailers have avoided giving a glimpse of the Emperor. So far, Palpatine has only appeared on a Star Wars 9 poster released at D23, which repuposed a Hot Toys model rather than using anything from the film. That's led to increasing speculation that something has changed about the Emperor's appearance, something that Lucasfilm is keen to avoid revealing at this stage.
Related:Â Why Does Star Wars 9âs Emperor Palpatine Look Like A Cartoon?
Still, Ian McDiarmid's voice has now been heard, making the Emperor sound as sinister as ever. "Your journey nears its end," he declares ominously, although it's unclear to whom or quite what he's inferring.

The Star Wars 9 D23 trailer builds towards its close with another surprise: Palpatine's voice is followed by Darth Vader's very distinctive heavy breathing. The shadow of Darth Vader has loomed over the sequel trilogy; Kylo Ren is obsessed with his grandfather to the point that, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he considered himself to be continuing Darth Vader's mission.
This audio cue sets up viewers to believe that Darth Vader has some sort of direct presence in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, although at this stage it's difficult to say what his role would be; and it could simply be a marketing trick.. Exclusive D23 footage showed that Vader's damaged mask makes a return, so at the very least his legend lives on.

The conclusion to the D23 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer takes a disturbing turn with a shot of what is clearly meant to be an evil Rey. There's long been speculation that Rey could be vulnerable to the lure of the dark side; she appeared to have committed herself to the light at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but that kind of decision is one that a Jedi must mkae every day of their lives. As even Luke Skywalker himself learned to his cost, once you have taken a single footstep down that dark road, you will always be vulnerable.
Related:Â Star Wars 9 Theory: Why Rey Turns To The Dark Side
The interesting question is whether this is real or not. It wouldn't be out of the question for this to be a Force vision, encouraging Rey to avoid this or else seeing her confront her greatest fear.

Rey is shown wielding a remarkable double-bladed lightsaber that starts as two parallel blades and flips to create a staff. At first glance, it appears to be similar to Darth Maul's in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, but the handle is longer and the rotating aspect makes it more similar to lightsabers used by ancient Jedi Temple Guards in Star Wars Rebels.
The red hue is, of course, a universal symbol of the dark side; where Jedi bond with the Kyber inside their lightsabers, Sith dominate it with their own will, and it "bleeds" the crystal to a crimson color. What's most striking here is that the blades crackle similar to Kylo Ren's broken lightsaber, rather than the clean glow of traditional versions. This suggests the weapon is a new creation.

The God Who Sees
"She (Hagar) gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: 'You are the God who sees me,' for she said, 'I have now seen the One who sees me.'"1
God had promised Sarai, Abram's wife, that she would have a son, but in her impatience, she decided to take matters into her own hands. She had a maidservant named Hagar, who she gave to Abram as a wife with the hopes that she could build a family through her. However, once Hagar became pregnant, she began to despise Sarai, so Sarai mistreated her.
As an Egyptian woman, it is likely that Hagar didn't share the same faith in God that Abram and his family did. The Bible makes no mention of her devotion to God, but as Sarai's maidservant, I would guess she had come to know "the basics" about God. When Sarai mistreated Hagar, she ran away, not knowing where to go or what to do. The angel of the Lord found her in the desert and gave her the hope she needed. God saw Hagar, not because of anything she had done or because she was good, but rather because HE is good. She came to know Him personally and gave the Lord the name "El-Roi", which means "The God who sees me". We see this specific name for God only once in Scripture, and it came from Hagar who may have been considered an unlikely source, but "The God who sees" is still the same today.
Do you at times feel lost in the desert like Hagar? Maybe not in a literal sense, but perhaps you wander away not knowing what to do or where to go? When we feel invisible and forgotten by those around us, God sees us. He sees our struggles and draws near to us. Matthew 6:26 reminds us that our value is greater than the birds of the air that God cares for without them doing anything to deserve it. Our mistakes do not separate us from God. He is there, ready to forgive, when we come to Him with sincere and humble hearts. He has a plan for our lives. He is always good, and we can trust in Him.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, you are the God who sees me. Not because of anything I have done or because I am good, but because YOU are always good. When I wander or feel unseen, let me see the many ways in which you love me. The blessings you bestow upon me and the answers to my many prayers, the beauty of your creation, and incomparable gift of love that we have in Jesus. I know I can fully trust your care for me in every season. Thank you, in Jesus' name, Amen.1. Genesis 16:13 (NIV).

A u g u s t :
My chest deflates as the door closes softly behind me. I take slow steps to Elise, stopping only to kneel down and slip her heels onto her feet one at a time. This only seems to make her cry harder.
I stand straight, fingers uncurling, and rub my thumb across her cheek.
âAbram,â she says, recoiling from my touch. âYou canât hate me and do that. It isnât fairâand I know what I did to you wasnât fair but, Abram, please. If youâre going to hate me, hate me wholly.â
âJe ne te dĂ©teste pas,â I say. âThatâs the problem, Elise. I donâtâI donât hate you. I want to, I tried to.â Â
âThen you need to try harder,â she cries. She grabs the lapels on my jacket, pulling me in only to push me away. âHate me, Abram. Hate me! I canâtâI canât be Anais. Hate me so I can stop loving you. Iâm begging you, please. Hate me.â
I grab her hands, warm and soft, and pry them from my suit. âI canât,â I yell.
âYou can,â Elise yells back. âThink of everything Iâve done to you. Think about how much Iâve hurt youââ
ââI think about it every day,â I say over her. âBut the good starts to outweigh the bad and all I can think about is what it felt like to kiss you. Iâm so mad at you, but I miss youâand Iâm even angrier that youâd trade my hate to heal your broken heart. What about me? What about my heart?â
âAbram, Iâd give anything to fix the damage Iâve done to you, to us,â says Elise. Her face contorts and fresh tears spill down her cheeks. âBut youâre stronger than I am and hating me is what I deserve. We both know youâre better off without me.â
âOk, Sylvia Plath,â I say, then pause. My mouth falls open, and after a few seconds my chest shakes.
âWhat?â Elise snaps, pulling her hands away from mine. âWhatâs so funny?â
âI just made the connection. Sylvia.â
âSo weâre laughing about it now?â she asks. âI donât get you, Abram.â
âNo, weâre notâI am,â I say. âIâm allowed to laugh at what you did, because looking back, I should have known. Itâs so obvious now.â
âWhat is this, Abram?â says Elise as she wipes her face. âAt dinner you wanted to fight with me, and tonight youâre putting my shoes on my feet and telling me you miss me.â
âThis is me still loving you, Elise,â I say. âThis is me trying to ignore how mad I am because I miss you.â
âBut you canât, can you?â
I shake my head. âNot yet.â
âAbram, I canât do this,â she says. âI canât wait for you. I canât be my aunt.â
âThen maybe this is goodbye.â

Thatâs what I was planning, next year on Christmas.
She would love that.
I feel like shit, because ik what youâre going through but I had to tell you.
Itâs fine. Iâm really happy for you, Brody.
I always knew youâd marry her.
Itâs crazy, isnât it? Not too long ago we were kids playing street hockey in the summer while she deliberately rode her bike in front of you and made fun of the way our voices cracked when we hit puberty. Now, weâre about to graduate, and that shit head of a girl is going to be your wife.
And that lanky blond kid with knobby knees is going to be my best man.
I love u Hunties.

O c t o b e r :
âI saw you play on Saturday. I had no idea you were on the hockey team.â
I respond only with a grunt as I pour a foul-smelling, pink liquid into a beaker.
âYou were really good,â she goes on. âI used to go see the Predators all the time back in Nashville.â
âWe need a gram of iodine crystals,â I say, my eyes on our shared text-book.
Out of the corner of my eye I see Stassi carelessly pour the light purple crystals directly into a bowl and I sigh loudly.
âI said a gram, not an ounce. You have to weigh it.â
âOhâŠSorry,â she says, hurriedly pouring them back into the container. âI was just distracted.â
âPlease, try to focus,â I say. âPut the iodine into the round beaker.â
âYou make it sort of hard,â she replies.
I look up from the textbook to see her cheeks burning pink as she shyly looks away from me and to the spread of glassware in front of us.
âWe need a damp filter to pour the ammonia into the iodine,â I say.
âAnd you keep doing that,â she says as the turns the water on low and dampens the center of a paper towel. âWhy is that?â
My eyebrows crease and she sighs at me.
âEvery time I try to talk to you, you change the subject,â she says. âWell, when you actually talk back.â
âItâs not just you,â I say, looking back at our work. âI donât really talk to anyone.â
âWhy not?â she asks. âDonât you want to make new friends?â
I breathe out a laugh and shake my head. âNo, I donât, actually.â
âWhat happened to you, Abram Dyer?â asks Stassi.
I pause, because the only other person to address me like that is Elise. âWhy do you think something happened to me?â
âBecause,â she says. âNo one is inherently that broody.â
Just a few inches shorter than me, I look down at her and I smile even though I donât want to. âEveryone has a story, Stassi,â I say. âSome peoples are just more messed up than others.â
âIâll tell you mine if you tell me yours,â she says.
âWe need to pour the iodine over the crystals next.â

N o v e m b e r :
Gigiâs house never felt like a home until now. It was always too big and too vacantâbut at present it almost feels too small. Between Jason, Sophie, Sienna, Nyx, Brody, Ellie, Gigi and myself, the house is alive with noise, and her five bedrooms and bathrooms are just barely enough for everyone to cohabitate for a week.
âThis is why I love the holidays,â Gigi says fondly. âI get to see my house full of my grandchildren.â
âAw, Grams,â says Sienna, throwing her arm around Gigiâs shoulders. She gives her a lopsided smile and kisses her cheek. âYouâre going soft on us.â
âIâm not going soft, dear,â says Gigi, âI just have a soft spot for you, but it will be callous if you donât stop calling me Grams.â
Sienna snorts into her beer. Out of everyone in the room, sheâs definitely the drunkest, with Ellie coming in close behind her as she drinks straight from a bottle of Avion tequila.
âYou alright over there, Els?â I ask, tossing a pretzel at her.
She leans onto her elbow and points her finger at me. âActually, no. Iâm not.â
âUh, babe,â says Brody. Worried that sheâs a bomb that will go off at any second. âThink before you speak. You have to face these people for the next six days.â
âYouâre not the boss of me, Brody,â Ellie says without looking at him. âKaiâAbram, Gigiââ
The doorbell rings loudly and everyone looks to where we know the front door is.
âWho could that be at this hour?â says Ellie.
I see Gigi raise an eyebrow at her before she stands and leaves the room.
âI mean, did someone order pizza?â Ellie says, then takes another drink straight from the bottle.
âWhat did you do?â Brody says pointedly.
âShe didnât act alone,â Sophie chimes in, smiling from Jasonâs shoulder.
âLookâIâm sorry,â says Ellie. âBut she came here to spend the week with her dad and heâs out of town until Thanksgiving.â
âEllie!â Brody and I say in stereo.
âAnd Sophie!â says Sophie, lifting her head up.
âShe doesnât have anyone, Abram!â Ellie says through clenched teeth. âBe nice.â
I look toward the kitchen just as Gigi is walking Elise through it. I really want to be angry at Ellie, but when I see Elise, I canât be. She looks at me and I instantly notice that her eyes are puffy and blood shot and the makeup around them is smeared. I also canât help but notice how well she fills out the dress she wears.
And I canât help but notice that sheâs never looked more beautiful than she does right now. And I canât help but wonder where the tears came from.
There is a squeal and then a flash of hair, and all I see next is Ellie tackle Elise the same way I tackled Brody on Gigiâs kitchen floor that morning. But they pick themselves up a lot faster than we did.
âLet me get you a chair, dear,â says Gigi.
âNonsense,â says Ellie, grabbing Elise by the hand. âI can sit on Brodyâs lap. Brody, come sit where I was.â
Brody and I share a look. Mine says, you better not get up. And his looks a lot like, sheâll kill me if I donât. Without a word he stands, and Ellie all but shoves Elise into the seat beside mine.
âIâm glad to see you made it,â says Sophie, shocking me by not insulting Eliseâs mildly dishevelled appearance.
âI had to fly to New York first,â says Elise. âThen I had a really long layover in Denver.â
âWell, youâre a sight for sore eyes,â says Ellie. She picks up the bottle of tequila and shakes it around. âYou want?â
âSure,â she says as she shrugs out of her coat.
Her perfume wafts through the air and Iâm brought back to this time last year. I can feel our champagne kiss, and her hands in my hair.
Before Elise sets the bottle down, I hold my hand out for it. We stare at each other until our fingers touch, and I take the bottle and turn it up.
Ellie claps her hands together happily. âThis is great!â
And my head falls back with a second gulp.
An hour passes with Ellie, Elise and Sophie talking amongst themselves, before people start announcing that theyâre going to bed. The first to leave us is Nyx, who helps a very drunk Sienna out of her chair. Followed by Jason and Sophie, then Gigi.
When itâs just the four of us, Ellie climbs off of Brodyâs lap to sit beside him.
âSo, are you going to make Elise sleep on the couch?â she asks, swaying in her seat.
âEllie,â says Elise. She looks at me apologetically. âI can stay at my dadâs apartmentâI justââ
âNo!â says Ellie. âYouâre not staying there alone when you can stay here with us. Plus, itâs late and youâre drunk.â
âI can Uber,â says Elise.
âNo,â comes out of my mouth so fast that it takes a moment for me to realize I actually said it. âYou donât need to get into a late-night Uber.â
âYeah,â says Brody stifling a yawn. âAbram told me the Uber drivers here are even weirder than the ones in Boston.â
âAbramâs bed is huge,â says Ellie. âBut you already knew that, because youâve slept in it before.â
I toss another pretzel at her, this time hitting her face. âThanks, Els.â
âHey! Iâm just saying,â she says, tossing it back, but misses me completely and hits Eliseâs forehead.
âI could share with Abram,â Brody suggests.
âOr Elise can share with Abram. God, Brody,â says Ellie, attempting to whisper the latter but failing miserable.
My heart pounds into my stomach at the thought of sharing my bed with her, my jeans fitting just a little tighter. I feel my face turn red and my mouth go dry and I look everywhere but at her.
âAbram?â says Brody.
I shrug, looking up at the chandelier. âIâm fine with whatever.â

Making something invisible visible
JJ Abrams has created many celebrated TV shows but not many people have heard about a show named Fringe. In Fringe, Dr. Walter Bishop tries to re-create the conditions needed to make an invisible parallel universe visible while the FBI Fringe division investigates him.
For our first assignment, we had to explore a similar idea:
Make something invisible, visible.
Process
As I started thinking about it, the first and obvious element that came to mind was Emotions.
Being an anxious person myself, I liked the idea of making my anxiety visible in some way so I could become aware with the help of a device that I was getting anxious.
My bullshit filter was too high and so I thought of foolproof ways using existing tech and ensured my Design performed one and one function only - track my anxiety.
It would have a clip on heartbeat detector clipped at the waist (for effectiveness) and an app that would change screen colors based on anxiety levels. You could manually check-in at your own convenience how anxious you were through the day. It was designed keeping a self-aware person in mind.
No AI handover for analysis or constant notifications that make you add to anxiety.
What I learned:
I thought this assignment was a big lesson on many levels:
3 decisions were bang on:
a. have it do a single thing and nothing more
     b. color changing as a form seems to work naturally for this idea.
     c. No AI, no notifications - good
2. The run of the mill app was a bad idea.
3. If it's about effectiveness, why not have the heartbeat detector on the heart?
4. Why not turn it a piece of jewelry?
5. Try to get out of the shoes of the designer & put on the shoes of the user, conduct the would I wear it myself BS test.
What I would do differently:
This class gave me permission to listen to my imagination and find ways to make those ideas come to life. It also set the tone for the rest of the semester and the guidance was to explore everything.
I was thinking of this crystal necklace I ownâŠand if there was any way to make it intelligent in a visible way that transcends its current supernatural powers.
The mood ring is an interesting product in this realm. Maybe it was too ahead of its time.
youtube
The ideal scenario:
Keeping the principles of the mood ring at the center
What if, we could
add a heart rate detector to the neopixel necklace by adafruit
youtube
The theory is if the heart rate rises above 100, the colors are coded to change
Since crystals are having a moment, if we could give this a crystal face/front it would make for an interesting piece of jewelry.
Constraints: Make it subtle yet bright enough to draw the wearerâs attention
Another way:
The 2nd variation I would like to test is vibration feedback.
The code would be designed to start giving subtle vibration feedback when heart rate rises above 100
No lights no shine, just designed to be a platform of private communication and feedback between the Anxious wearer and her necklace.
Maybe just a vibration motor at the back of the crystal and a small Gemma circuit board with a capsule battery connected to an optical heart rate monitor.
In Conclusion:
Overall, the wearability of wearables really hinges on the nuances of the environment. In heated moments when anxiety levels rise, any kind of tech feedback is annoying.
Maybe sometimes things are best left invisible or better, turned off.
Inspiration:
Color changing tech has become central in a lot of experimental design
