fyi: I’m staying away from leaks

If you want to know my thoughts about recent events, here they are:

So idk if I’ve ever mentioned this before, but when I started watching and reading bnha I made a point not to engage with the fandom until I was caught up, because I didn’t want spoilers. When I finally made it to the current chapter, it was around the end of the first war. That’s when I started looking at what other people were saying, and that’s when I found out about when/where leaks were. I’ve been tuning in ever since, for a few reasons that I only rarely stop to interrogate. First and foremost: I’ve liked the extra time to prepare what I want to say if the chapter contains a major revelation or cliff hanger I want to write about. It’s satisfying to punctuate my Sunday morning with a fully fleshed out essay I can immediately post. Then of course it’s also fun to participate in the Moment that leaks create, especially because they unfortunately tend to make the officials feel like an afterthought. And let’s not lie to ourselves—a major reason we tune in is because of FOMO. Everyone else is doing it. You don’t want to be left out of the conversation and not know what’s going on. I especially wanted to know ahead of time about lines that might get butchered in the official English translation. It was nice knowing that Horikoshi didn’t write that “Swiss cheese” line, right? These are some understandable reasons.

But since the routine got disrupted a little, I kinda got slapped in the face with enough clarity to start asking myself: what would I actually get the most enjoyment out of? Because when I heard the (now outdated) news that leaks were no more, I was actually relieved. So. That’s cause for some reflection. I’m like, man, what if I did tune out of social media entirely, wake up on Sunday, have my nice little home cooked breakfast, and read the new chapter for the first time over a cup of tea. What if I experienced the surprises as I turned the page and they stared me in the face, with Horikoshi’s beautiful artwork in HD.

Sure, I’d need to catch up after the fact if there’s any translation fuckery, but that’s okay. That’s doable. Bless the folks who take the time to comb through the Japanese and explain the nuance to everyone else. This is tangential, but I’ve also started thinking even more about how satisfying it would be to edit my own versions (for personal use only of course). That’s a… long-term goal, but maybe it’ll take care of my annoyance with the ‘official’ blunders and bad dialogue. The point is, idk if making myself aware of that stuff should be my #1 priority, above even reading the chapter in the first place. If anything it just makes me more pissed off and fixated on what might be wrong. Which is valid… but distracting. I should prioritize having fun as much as I can.

The other thing is, I’m kind of a social media lurker anyway. I don’t say much in the moment, and I don’t post often. On twitter I mostly just engage in other people’s comments. And it’s not like thousands of people are waiting to hear what I think. Like I said, my personal incentive is to get a head start on analyzing so I can pull together a long, thoughtful response in a more timely manner. But I don’t have to do that. I might as well just embrace my cryptid tendencies—you get my two cents whenever I feel like crawling out of my well.

I don’t want to moralize this whole thing, ask you to think about how the sausage gets made, but I will say I’m looking forward to finding out about big moments without seeing them in the form a short summary tweet first. I mean, c’mon… leakers know how to build hype to an extent but it’s still no substitute. It’s like listening to a sportscaster on the radio instead of watching the game. As we get closer to the end, I just want to savor it!

Welcome to another weird rant! A small, dumb tangent if you will. :}

When I saw Alastor eating that deer carcass in that one episode, I wasn't phased by it like most other people probably were. I wasn't upset by that part. What upset me about was that he didn't even take the time to prepare and cook it. Didn't even hang it up and gut and drain it before cutting the meat from it. As someone who grew up eating venison, that would've made enough steak for at least a month or year or so.

And you might say, "Oh it would've taken too long he didn't have the patience." And to that I say, okay then he could've just skinned it or something and put it on a spick and roasted the whole thing over a fire and cooked it that way.

I bet he has enough room in that forest dimension he has in his room. He could've done that, maybe added some seasonings, maybe some salt and butter with it and it would've made a good rotisserie and had himself a leg of that thing like mutton. But, noooo he had to just eat it raw like that classy barbarian he is. I thought it said he likes to cook; which implies he knows how to. If Gorden Ramsey saw that deer like that he would've said it was so raw that it would still be calling out for its mama like Bambi.

​Hi I fell asleep and then got distracted but I'm awake and un-distracted so good morning I'm using this as an excuse to talk about one of my Double Cross characters bc I don't have a lot of opportunities for that okay here we go-

Okay, so, her name is Velvet, she's an interplanetary rover and a Renegade being (talked about before here) (tl;dr: the setting's superpower juice can infect things beyond humans, including robotics, and non-human things it infects can disguise themselves as humans) the basic concept came from people humanizing electronics and especially like, the specific way they do it for the ones designed to explore space (bc it's one of the few times it comes off as genuinely sweet and not weird), and as with all things that I find kind of neat, I made a character about it;

SO, a lot of character creation in Double Cross has the option to use random tables to roll or pick from and while most elements can just be done freestyle if you want, I like the tables, so a lot of this next bit is gonna talk about me interpreting said tables because I think it was fun-

First up is actually something that doesn't come from a table, which is work and cover, work is what the character does and it affects their stats and skill and etc, and cover is what they appear to be normally, like your work could be "vigilante" while your cover was "businessman", for a completely random example- So, Velvet is a Renegade being so her Work is that she's a Renegade Being (C) and her cover is that she's an information broker, because she comes installed with wifi and also picked up a some secrets by being an advanced piece of robotics built to explore space

Then for the next bit there's Origin, Experience, Encounter, Awakening, and Impulse, the former three are to set up connections with other people bc themes and etc and the latter two describe how you came into contact with the Renegade and your primary feeling when you go sicko mode for whatever reason

So for Origin she gets "Watched from Above" which suggests "Protector" as the relevant person, so, because she's exploring distant planets, "Above" becomes "down on Earth" with the protector being a member of the operating staff, Experience is "Harsh Environment" and you'd think that'd be space, and it kind of is part of it, but I'm also using it to describe the environment she returns to, and the "Ally" it suggests as the connection is going to be a small animal (I haven't actually decided specifically what bc I haven't done any art yet but my first thought is a lab rat but I'm also compelled by maybe a squirrel or a small bird)

Now Encounter is an interesting one bc this table actually directs you to specific NPCs with full profiles, for that one I ended up rolling Admiration for the student council president who's hardworking and super nice and cute and everyone likes her and yeah I'll take that free yuri--

Awakening is one that I had a lot of fun with bc the only mechanical effect is that it dictates a portion of the stat that indicates how active your Renegade is by default and I was having a hard time choosing between Anger and Yearning, but then I noticed that they have the exact same value mechanically, so I decided the answer is both-

and then Impulse is, well, an impulse your character has when they lose control because themes, mechanics, etc-- her's isn't esp interesting bc it's Hatred, which is just an extension of her awakening being Anger-

Okay this is taking too long and I'm getting embarrassed so the last segment is what she's actually capable of doing with her abilities so I'll make this slightly quicker maybe idk I'm trying--

All the powers in this game are divided into one of 13 syndromes and you get to pick between 1-3 of them, Velvet has 2 and they're Black Dog (control over electricity and by extension machinery, electronics, magnetism, cybernetics, etc) and Morpheus (creation and manipulation of items, a lot of its abilities are equipment upgrades and pulling new gear out of thin air)

The former was obviously necessary bc she's a robot so ofc she has a bunch of the cybernetic powers but then for Morpheus I actually just picked that one specifically for one of their RP-only powers, Component Analysis
