Unexpected fragrances for fall
Awhile back, Claire Vukcevic wrote a wonderful article about unexpected summer fragrances titled, "Summer Fragrances for People Who Hate Summer & Also Summer Fragrances". Inspired by that post, I thought I'd write a similar article for autumn, the season of pumpkin spice. While I adore my smoky incenses, leathers, and tobaccos, I thought this September, I might challenge myself to consider olfactory experiences that do not play into autumnal cliches.
Warm and romantic greens: Green tends to be a colour we associate with spring freshness or wintery forests, but an uncharacteristically cosy green wears well in the fall. One of my favourite fragrances is Fat Electrician (Etat Libre d'Orange), a smoky vetiver paired with bitter myrrh and a dollop of vanilla cream stirred in. For a nostalgic green chypre, Vert de Fleur (Tom Ford) pairs galbanum with airy florals and musk. And while it's not a green fragrance, Vanille (Mona di Orio) is a creamy unsweetened vanilla with a delightfully unexpected verdant opening.
Spicy florals: Spicy gourmands and leathers are par for the course in autumn, but a spicy floral gives a nice twist on the theme. Thankfully, we have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to a spicy rose. My personal favourites include the musky La Fille de Berlin (Serge Lutens) and the dramatic, ugly voluptuousness of Eau de Protection (Etat Libre d'Orange). One fragrance I found surprizingly refreshing for this overheated summer, yet is still suitable for the fall is Music for a While (Frédéric Malle), one of the house’s better recent releases, juxtaposing a medicinal lavender against a sweet and toothsome pineapple and tying it all together with a rich patchouli base. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Twilly (Hermès), which recently garnered a coveted five star review from Luca Turin, a playful scent which pairs warm ginger and creamy tuberose.
Territorial musks: In the summer, spritzing a heavy musk would be too suffocating. But as the weather cools, animalistic musks are appropriately warm, like a layer of cashmere. One of my favourite skankbombs is Absolue Pour Le Soir (Maison Francis Kurkdjian), a powerful scent with a spice infused, pissy honey that is rich enough to be embalmed in. Another infamously filthy scent is Salome (Papillon Perfumes) which I’ve reviewed here earlier. Perhaps even more challenging is Oudh Infini (Dusita), a rose-oud unlike any other, with a creamy, pungent Laotian oud with more than a suggestion of a dung pile at the zoo. It would be disgusting were it not skillfully offset by an opulent rose. For a darker, greener take on musk, there is Opus VII (Amouage) which pairs spices, earthy galbanum and fenugreek with rank animalistic notes to stunning effect.
Suede and fur: We often talk about fragrance in terms of notes, but less often in terms of texture. Fragrances with soft, velvety and heavier textures pair perfectly with the crisp autumn air. Daim Blonde (Serge Lutens) is a supple, feminine suede with a hint of apricots. New Sibet (Slumberhouse) is a dirty iris with a fascinating textural play between damp fur and creamy musk. Finally, the spicy cassie flower and musk of Une Fleur de Cassie (Frédéric Malle) give the impression of a glam vintage fur duster from the 70s.
A spot of tea: Rather than the transparent classics like Bvlgari’s Thé Vert, teas for cooler weather can be more robust. The boldest tea scent I know is Vi et Armis (Beaufort London) which features an aggressively smoky, spicy, peaty black brew. Admittedly, it smells awful at first, but if you have the patience to muscle through the first thirty minutes or so, you will be rewarded by a rich complexity. A far more well behaved smoky tea would be the gourmand Tea for Two (L’Artisan Parfumeur) which has a lapsang souchong accord and a touch of sweetness. For a lighter wear that still reads as spicy, Lothair (Penhaligon's) offers a fragrant and spiced chai that is somewhat abstract.
Soil and resin: Richness in a fragrance can be sought when we return to notes from the earth. Consider for example, Coven (Andrea Maack), which imparts the sensation of plunging one’s hands into rich, damp soil on a cool day. I love how its earthy edge lingers right into the dry down. Pale Grey Mountain, Small Black Lake (D.S. & Durga) is another atmospheric outdoorsy fragrance, although it is more abstract. Still, it manages to evoke herbs and moisture without resorting to the dreaded calone note. For a drier fragrance, the unique Myrrh Casati (Mona di Orio) dries down more to a resin than incense smoke and offers a sharp tension particular to Somalian myrrh.
Seasonal curatives: We cannot talk about medicinal fragrances without referencing the Original Comme des Garçons (Comme des Garçons) fragrance that was released with the tagline, "works like a medicine, behaves like a drug." While I love its potent mix of warming spices and resinous woods throughout the year, I feel it works best in the cooler months for me. A lighter scent, featuring a medicinal ingredient is Dirty Ginger (Heretic Perfumes) which lives up to its namesake with a simple, transparent composition of the earthy rhizome. For a mentholated note, Lonestar Memories (Tauer) offers a unique interpretation of the smoky campfire that's cool and balsamic.
Unusual orientals: The traditional oriental plays very nicely with the season but there are a few curious orientals compositions deserving of mention. One of my personal favourites is Noir Epices (Frédéric Malle) which strips the oriental of warm ambers and musks, leaving behind a dry and severe skeleton of spice and florals. Seven Veils (Byredo) is another oddball, a sweet and carroty iris that gives the impression of creamy root beer. Finally, for something truly different, there's the polarizing Breath of God (LUSH), which mixes a panoply of notes. Rather than your typical rich and smoky fragrance, it mixes up a deep, tarry cade with powerful hespiridic notes, fruity florals and woods.

The time you spend in the bath or shower can be an essential part of your self-care routine. There's just something so soothing about cleansing your body and taking time for yourself, especially after a long day. And while a lot of it has to do with the water temperature and how cozy or comforting your bathroom is, your bath products can make a difference, too. You might have a favorite bath soak or shampoo or face wash, but I think body washes sometimes get forgotten in the mix. Maybe it's because our face and hair are top priorities, or maybe it's because we've been using the same body wash for a decade and are reluctant to try something new. That can be a shame because the right one can really hydrate, smooth, and nourish your skin. Take a look at some of the best-reviewed ones for every skin type below. Beauty editor Erin Jahns recommends this cleanser from Goop. It's made with glacial marine clay, safflower oil, moringa oil, and a blend of essential oils for a luxurious bath experience. One reviewer on Credo Beauty wrote, "I've tried all kinds of body washes that would help reduce the keartosis pilaris on my upper arms, without harsh chemicals. This lathers well, is still very gentle on my skin, and has helped my KP nearly disappear. I like that there is little scent to it and leaves my skin feeling clean, yet moisturized." With a bright citrus scent, Fresh's body wash will really wake you up and leave you feeling refreshed. The foaming gel contains shea butter and vitamins C and E for a hydrating effect. One Nordstrom review reads, "This is my favorite body wash, especially for summer. Gives you a clean smooth feeling and smells wonderful." Gentle but still cleansing, Drunk Elephant's body cleanser contains marula oil and sacha inchi seed oil to moisturize and nourish skin. This one's formulated for all skin types, too. A Sephora reviewer wrote, "This body cleanser is truly one of the best I've tried. It smells delightful even though there’s no fragrance, it's not drying or tightening once you get out of the shower and the scent doesn't linger, and you only need a little bit to go a long way." If you can't get enough of your diffuser, you're going to love the aromatherapy benefits of this cleanser. It contains chamomile, bergamot, and rosewood scents for a calming bath experience. Plus, it will moisturize and smooth your skin. A reviewer on Dermstore said, "I can't get enough of this scent. I want to shower all the time just so I can use it. I love it." We're already obsessed with Byredo's candles, so of course, we're going to love its body products, too. This cleansing wash has a light floral scent. One review on Nordstrom says, "This body wash lathers up just enough, and cleanses in a deliciously soft and gentle way, leaving a subtle scent behind. It's just perfect for facing the day ahead as a pick-me-up, or as a soothing bedtime treat." This gentle cleanser from haircare favorite Ouai features jojoba seed oil, rose-hip oil, and lactobacillus ferment to cleanse, kill bacteria, and hydrate. A Sephora reviewer wrote, "Great body wash. Light, wonderful scent that is not overpowering. I feel very clean and refreshed after using it." Korres's shower gel will help maintain your skin's natural moisture while boosting skin immunity, collagen production, and elasticity. It doesn't contain phthalates, silicone, or parabens. A reviewer on Dermstore wrote, "It leaves my skin so soft and moisturized. A little goes a long way. Also, it smells great." If you're used to sudsy soaps, this editor favorite doesn't foam as much, but that doesn't mean it doesn't get the job done. Aēsop's cleanser has botanical extracts to soften and purify your skin. And it's perfectly fine to use as a daily hand soap, too. Another favorite of beauty editor Erin Jahns's, this cleanser is packed with vitamins A, B, C, E and omegas-9 and -6. It's formulated with marula, cacay, and meadowfoam oils for a truly hydrating experience. Like its name implies, this cleanser is made specifically for people with eczema, dry, or sensitive skin. The coconut cleanser gently washes and moisturizes the skin. One Sephora reviewer wrote, "I don't write many reviews, but wow, I had to for this product. My skin is so SO sensitive. It's been trial-and-error trying to figure out what irritates my skin the least when it comes to body wash (or anything). My skin just never felt great, or was itchy, and I'm almost 33, and still have acne on my chest, shoulders, and back! Well, not anymore with this stuff!" Aveeno is a go-to brand for people with dry and sensitive skin, and its body wash doesn't disappoint. The creamy formula contains oatmeal for an ultra-soothing shower experience. One customer on Amazon said, "It has a light citrus scent when smelling it from the bottle, but as you wash with it, there's almost no scent at all. And the texture is beautiful, it's more gel-like. It lathers up extremely well. Once I was out of the bath, there was zero need to put on lotion. Actually putting on lotion felt overkill, this stuff kept me moisturized long after the fact." Eucerin's another brand that people with dry and sensitive skin gravitate toward. I'm partial to its hand cream for my eczema. The calming body wash is formulated with omega oils and natural lipids to help retain your skin's moisture and nourish. An Amazon review reads, "I've been using this product now for well over a year. There is nothing else, literally nothing else I can use without severe drying and skin irritation. Great if you have itchy skin. Lasts a long while." This body wash is one of associate beauty editor Courtney Higgs's favorites. It contains softening ingredients like coconut and jojoba oil. The formula is free of parabens, SLS, silicones, and other chemicals, and it's gentle enough for sensitive skin. Dove works well for sensitive skin. As someone with skin like that, I have always had the brand's body products around. The sensitive-skin body wash is hypoallergenic and sulfate-free, so it's super gentle and non-irritating. An Amazon reviewer wrote, "I have very sensitive skin, and I'm highly allergic to anything that has coconut (oil, butter, etc.) and SPF sunscreen... The scent is not overwhelming at all. It's a great body wash for my sensitive skin." This super-gentle wash is made with 95% naturally derived ingredients, and it's biodegradable, too. You can even use it on your face and hair. A customer at Nordstrom said, "Does not irritate my skin or my keratosis pilaris! Has a very light refreshing scent that is perfect for an everyday fresh and clean feeling. My new forever body wash, now if you can please make body lotion/butter to go with it!" This soap contains exfoliating ingredients, papaya and grapefruit extracts, to clear dead skin cells. And it also has oatmeal, which is great if you have problem skin on your back, chest, and shoulders. One Nordstrom reviewer said, "Leaves your skin soft and [it's] not drying at all! Also the biggest bonus for me it cleared my acne on my back which I've had for years!! It's inexpensive and smells fresh and clean." Humane's face and body wash has 10% benzoyl peroxide to treat acne, kill bacteria, and reduce inflammation. It's also clean and vegan. An Amazon reviewer wrote, "This will cure your acne. I wish I could give it 10 stars. Make sure to be patient, though. It's a long process that will pay off after about three months. But you need to be ready to be dedicated to your skin routine." Murad's body wash contains glycolic and salicylic acids to deep-clean skin and control breakouts. It also has green tea and licorice root extract to soothe your skin. A Sephora reviewer said, "This body wash has been a staple in my shower for three years. I repurchase it over and over because it's the only product I've found that consistently keeps me from breaking out on my back. I miss it and notice a difference on days that I skip it. Highly recommend for anyone trying to control breakouts on the body." The salicylic acid in this body wash will exfoliate and smooth your skin, while the essential ceramides will restore and protect. This one is a good option if you also have bumpy skin or keratosis pilaris. One reviewer on Amazon said, "I have been using this cleanser for over a week now and I am really impressed with it. I notice areas where I had clusters of pimples on my back is practically clear, my ingrown hairs on my thighs are practically gone, and my back thigh bumps are really smoothed out and you can tell they are starting to go away. The thing I notice most about this cleanser is your skin feels really soft afterwards, and not just the softness of exfoliation, but that it is actually helping retain your skin's moisture and protecting it." Proactiv's body wash is formulated with 2% salicylic acid to clear blemishes, unclog pores, exfoliate dead skin cells, and get rid of impurities. A Sephora reviewer wrote, "Regular body scrubs did a good job with the dry skin, but the oils would clog my pores and make the acne worse. Other acne washes would do a good job with the acne, but end up being too drying for my already dry skin. For me, this body wash/scrub nails that sweet spot in the middle of having both dry AND acne-prone skin." Next up, the $20-and-under eye creams that will make your skin look like a million bucks.

Krok č. 1 - Udělejte si pořádný peeling a alespoň pět minut ruce důkladně masírujte.
Joseph Loves: La Crème Main (1 460 Kč, Chanel), Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis a À la Rose (oba za 950 Kč, Ingredients), Indigo Soothing Silk Hand Cream (38 doalrů, Tatcha), Regenerační balzám na ruce Dr. Hauschka (532 Kč, Yinyang.cz), Cold Cream (199 Kč, Avène), La Mer The Hand Treatment (2 750 Kč, Douglas), Rodin Crema (info o ceně v kadeřnictvích Bomton.cz) Richly Hydrating Hand Cream (450 Kč, Kiehls), Cicaplast Mains (219 Kč, La Roche-Posay), Hand Pomade (32 euro, Le Labo), Intenzivní sérum na ruce Margaret Dabbs (1 090 Kč, Fann)

The Best Hand Creams for Winter
The start of winter means light more candles, cuddling on the couch, wool blankets, and knitted sweaters. If you’re anything like me, it also means extremely dry skin. The dryness of the air is compounded by the whipping Scandinavian winds.
My hands suffer worst of all, with painful dry patches that sometimes result in cracked or bleeding skin. That’s when it’s time to bust out the big guns: Kiehl’s, Neutrogena, and the host of other tried-and-true hand creams that, if applied regularly, will ensure that your hands stay smooth and that any problematic patches are addressed quickly.
Some are tubes, some are pump bottles; we find that the pump bottles work best at home while the tubes are great for your bag and desk drawer.
These are the hand creams that will keep your hands soft and moisturised throughout the winter:
Byredo Biblothèque Hand Cream
Is there anything more luxurious-looking than Byredo hand cream? We love the minimalist design, the subtle but quirky scents, and of course the effect of the cream itself. This is a great cream to keep in your bag and use after hand washing or throughout the day to keep dryness away. This particular fragrance reminds us of an library filled with antique books, a crackling fireplace, and leather chairs – ideal for winter.
Byredo Biblothèque Hand Cream
€30 | $35 | DKK 260
Skandinavisk ØY Hand Cream
Skaninavisk is all about creating scents that capture the Scandinavian landscape. “ØY” is Norwegian for “Island” and the scent is both light and slightly earthy. This isn’t a tropical island scent – it’s more about the mossy rocks and the green notes of the terrain. The cream itself is mid-way between thick and light, offering solid moisture and protection from the elements. The pastel blue metal tube is a bonus!
Skandinavisk ØY Hand Cream
€20 | $24 | DKK 150
Rudloph Care Acai Hand Cream
This lightweight formula dissolves almost immediately and has a subtle scent. The Danish brand is an expect at producing easy-to-use and high-quality body care that is also 100% organic and cruelty-free. The Acai hand cream includes shea butter, wheat protein, sweet almond oil, and acai oil. Aloe Vera helps heal any rough or broken patches of skin, so it’s a good product for both preventative and protective use.
Rudloph Care Acai Hand Cream
€33 | $38 | DKK 245
Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve
One of the most popular hand creams around, and with good reason. This stuff is heavy duty – the word “salve” indicates the thickness of the cream – and really works. Avocado and sesame oil both offer high levels of moisture. There’s minimal fragrance and the cream absorbs quickly. Because it’s so thick, this is a good cream to put on right before bed and let it sink in overnight.
Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve
€22 | $23 | DKK 150
MediK8 Hand and Nail Cream
Utilziing hyaluronic acid to retain moisture and SPF25, this high-quality hand and nail cream will keep your hands instantly moisturized as well as protect them against future damage. Sunscreen is something we often forget in our hand care, but it’s as vital as facial sunscreen, as our hands are almost always exposed to the sun.
MediK8 Hand and Nail Cream
€25 | $29 | 184 DKK
L:A Bruket Hand Cream in Bergamot/Patchouli
Swedish skincare company L:A Bruket makes all-natural, organic, and cruelty-free products that work hard. This hand cream has a base of shea butter and coconut oil, plus essential oils for a light fragrance. It is also slightly astringent, so it’s ideal for skin that is cracked from dryness.
L:A Bruket Hand Cream in Bergamot/Patchouli
€21 | $26 | 142 DKK
The Body Shop White Musk Hand Cream
If you were a fan of The Body Shop back in the 90s and early aughts but haven’t caught up on their products since, you’re missing out. Way ahead of their time in terms of organic ingredients, cruelty-free testing, and sustainability, The Body Shop has a plethora of great body and skincare for both young people and adults. Their White Musk hand cream is simple, lightly-fragranced, and keeps your hands feeling supple. It’s non-greasy and fast-absorbing so it’s a good tube to stick in your bag for on-the-go usage.
The Body Shop White Musk Hand Cream
€15 | $17 | 115 DKK
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream
A classic hand cream that simply does the job. It’s affordable, it’s available in original scent or unscented, and it keeps your hands supple no matter the weather. We also find it useful for cuticles, and other places that get extra dry like elbows and knees.
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream
€5 | $6 | 50 DKK
Meraki Hand Lotion in Pure
Meraki is a Danish brand launched by interiors company House Doctor. Their beautifully-packaged goods are made with organic ingredients and don’t use perfumes for their light scents. This hand lotion isn’t too thick or greasy, and it absorbs into the skin quickly. They do have a hand cream that comes in a tube, but we love their pump lotion: perfect for the sink, bedside, or desk!
Meraki Hand Lotion in Pure
€18 | $20 | 130 DKK
Burt’s Bees Almond and Milk Hand Cream
This hand cream is an old favorite and it never fails. With its gentle, comforting smell, the cream is a treat to smooth into your hands. The glass jar makes it feel a little extra special. A small bit goes a long way; this cream is thick and very effective. The price is great for the amount you get!
Burt’s Bees Almond and Milk Hand Cream
€12 | $13 | DKK
Supergoop! Forever Young Hand Cream
This hand cream, which includes sea buckthorn (are you sure you’re not Danish, Supergoop?), also has broad spectrum SPF40 coverage. This is a good basic hand cream that also protects from the sun: big win!
Supergoop! Forever Young Hand Cream
€11 | $12 | DKK 100
Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm
Aesop’s blend of highly effective and moisturizing botanicals, paired with their minimalist, monochrome packaging, has made it a go-to for the aesthetically-motivated among us. Luckily, it also works. Their quick-absorbing formula leaves hands soft and protected, and the herbal scent is noticeable but not overpowering. Their price points are a bit high, but you do get a lot for your money – this pump bottle gives you 500 ml worth of product and you only need a half pump per usage. As a treat, we recommend the hand soap and lotion for your bathroom. For travel, try their smaller metal tube of the same cream.
Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm
€80 | $97 | DKK 560

Byredo Mojave Ghost Body Wash: Soulful Beauty of the Mojave Desert | Review
“Inspired by the soulful beauty of the Mojave Desert!“ As you are aware, I am a huge fan of BYREDO and their scents – with Mojave Ghost being my favourite. I had an email alert about BYREDO’s new Mineralscapes eyeshadow, and thought I would chuck in an extra treat into my order – their Mojave Ghost body wash. Mojave Ghost is a woody fragrance from the Byredo luxury fragrance collection,…

Hygge: The Nordic Trend That Will Take Your Beauty Routine to the Next Level
What in the hell is Hygge? According to my new favorite book, “Hygge” is not so easy to define. You feel it. Hygge has been called a number of things, “the art of creating intimacy,” the “absence of annoyance,” or the “coziness of the soul.” I can get down with these things right? Right. Think: perfect lighting, cozy wool socks, a thunderstorm and a crackling fire. It’s about the atmosphere and the experience. The Little Book of Hygge is written by the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, headquartered in Copenhagen. In the book, he explains Hygge and reveals the Danish Secrets to Happy Living. It’s no surprise that Denmark, Norway always top the list of the world’s happiest countries, year after year. Scandinavians just do everything cooler and cozier. From fashion and beauty to architecture and home design, many of my favorite designers and lines are from the land of the blond and beautiful.
Whether you want to give your living room that Hygge aesthetic, or you want to simplify your beauty routine, these are the best Scandinavian beauty products for you. Think: clean, quality ingredients and minimalist-chic packaging. Get some Nordic vibes in your life. You’ll be so glad you did.
SKANDINAVISK CANDLES
Lighting and candles are two of the main Hygge hallmarks and this smart Danish candle line nails it. My favorite scent is even named Hygee and mixes fireplace-esque elements with rose petals, mint, and strawberry cake. Cozy, right? They are sold online at the Finnish Design Shop which I also love for home decor. I just bought this and this.
VERSO
Straight up addicted to this WHOLE line. The sleek exterior alone practically screams Scandinavian design, but it’s the potent dose of retinol housed inside that I’m really interested in. The line’s claim to fame is minimizing fine lines and boosting collagen production. It’s all totally non-irritating, so even those with sensitive skin can partake. My top picks are the Super Face Serum, the Super Eye Serum and the Reviving Eye Mask with Retinol 8.
BYREDO
Byredo dominates the luxe perfume market for its culty-cool fragrances, hand cream and candles. The scents are never overtly feminine but always ooze sex appeal. My picks are Gypsy Water (duh), Rose of No Man’s Land and Mojave Ghost.
REN
I have been using the Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask for over 10 years. Like many Scandanavian beauty brands, Ren is clean. This mask is free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances/dyes, and petrochemicals. Lactic and Glycolic acid work together to leave your skin bright, happy and tight, without a hint of irritation. Perfection, no?
ESTELLE & THILD
Estelle & Thild’s products are made of super luxurious ingredients. Everything is free from pesticides and toxic residues and are certified organic by EcoCert. My picks are the BioCare Bio Pregnancy Oil and Biodefence Multi-Nutrient Youth Oil.
RUDOLPH
A new find for me is Rudolph, a collection of exclusive beauty products, embodying pure luxury and enhanced by active ingredients that help nurture and care for your skin. Developed and produced in Denmark. Isn’t the packaging pretty too? My favorite are the body products, like the Acai Body Balm Limited Edition which is divine.
SACHAJUAN
When you want really good hair, Sachajuan is the answer. I love the Ocean Mist Volume Shampoo and Conditioner because they are the secret to super full-bodied locks. Designed to rebuild, plump and fortify each fiber, this repairing formula creates volume and leaves your tresses with a healthy bounce.
SJÄL
Each product in the själ range is charged with precious minerals including gold, silver, copper, platinum and germanium in both liquid and solid form. Known as electro-stimulants, these minerals function as semi-conductors, increasing cellular productivity, performance, repair and penetration. I am really into crystals, so it’s no surprise that this line is one of my favorites. The Kashmir Saphir Perfecting Mask calms redness, oxygenates and plumps. It’s one of my newest must-haves.
