If it means I can be more like the Dr. Faye-Ling I admire, I'll gladly accept chores and shopping lists. But it feels like some tasks unrelated to the study of medicine have been mixed in...

In Japan, “feminism” has become an increasingly common buzzword. But how many Japanese people truly understand the meaning of this word? And how many have seriously thought about gender inequality? In the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2020, Japan ranked 121st out of 153 countries–lower than its neighbors China (106th) and South Korea (108th). Within the four key areas of economy, politics, education, and health that the index measures, Japan ranks 115th in economics, and a disappointingly low 144th in politics.
Japan has a long way to go to achieve gender equality, but some people have been speaking out. One of these people is Rina Ishii, CEO of BLAST inc. and founder of period product company Nagi. I spoke to Ishii about her thoughts on the gender gap in Japan through her experience in media management and branding.
The story of women’s empowerment brands BLAST and Nagi
ーーWhen did you become aware of gender inequality?
Rina Ishii: I was raised in a predominantly female household with my mom, dad, and sister. My dad did about 70% of the housework and my parents never forced me to act “feminine.” I grew up hearing about female independence from my mom. I also watched “Sex and the City” and admired career women like Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. My middle and high school were all-girls’ schools, so I don’t think I had much opportunity to truly experience gender disparity or oppression.
But looking through magazines, there were so many articles that focused on the male gaze. It was when I started hunting for jobs that I realized something was very wrong; I was surprised to learn that some companies require uniforms only for women. I really became aware of the gender gap when I entered the workforce. I was born and raised in Japan, and I had never doubted that I was living in a developed nation. Yet, we were closer to the bottom than the top when it came to the gender gap. I was shocked to learn that the inequality between men and women was so bad.
ーーWhy did you decide to quit your first job after graduation to start BLAST and Nagi?
Ishii: The first company I joined did web marketing and published books about Instagram marketing. When it comes to social media, the West is more advanced, so I would look at a lot of Western influencers. I saw that they were all speaking out about gender issues, and also the extent to which #MeToo had spread.
In Japan, it’s rare to speak up about these issues and there aren’t many opportunities to learn about them. That’s why I launched BLAST, a media outlet that I imagined as the Japanese version of American women’s empowerment media outlet Refinery 29. But it took longer than I imagined for a media outlet about feminism and empowerment to take off; our business is a startup with limited resources. Since that was the case, we decided to first focus on businesses that support women through tangible means, so we launched Nagi.

Workplace Yuri Drama 'Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon' Releases Third Volume
On June 21, Seven Seas Entertainment digitally released the third volume in Shio Usui's workplace Yuri drama Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon (Kaketa Tsuki to Doughnut). Paperback editions of the manga will be available on Tuesday, June 28.
Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon is a Shaikijin Yuri series and so follows adult characters living and working in the real world. In it, office worker Uno Hinako becomes distraught after finding herself unable to find a fulfilling relationship with me. No matter how hard she tries to be "normal," she keeps failing. But when she is at her lowest, her quiet coworker, Asashi Sato, comes to her aid and comforts her. Despite their different personalities and goals, the two women form a close friendship that begins to develop into something more.
The publisher describes the third volume:
Hinako wants to get closer to Asahi, but there is still a lot she needs to work out. What will happen when she turns to Fuuka in her time of need? And how will Fuuka handle her own feelings for Asahi?
The manga was serialized in Comic Yuri Hime from 2019 until its conclusion in May. Ichijinsha publishes three Japanese manga volumes, with a fourth and final volume scheduled for release in July. Jenny McKeon translates the third volume into English, with adaptation by C.A. Hawksmoor and lettering by Rina Mapa.
Doughnuts Under a Cresent Moon has received praise from critics for its characters and tackling of social issues. Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network gave the series’ second volume a B+ and YuriMother awarded the first volume a 9/10 score, writing that it “handles its emotional and powerful story with grace and patience.”
Shio Usui is a Yuri mangaka known for Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon and Onna Tomodachi to Kekkon Shitemita (Trying Out Marriage With My Female Friend), which is currently serialized in Comic Yuri Hime. They have contributed to the Chocolat and Doujin Onna Yuri anthologies.

Sakuya Sakuma | [SR] Banquet of Blooming - Starring “Sakuya”
Special thanks to Rina for sharing the screenshots with me!
Sakuya: Hello, everyone!
Sakuya: Thank you for coming to today’s viewing of “Romeo and Julius”! I’m Spring Troupe’s Sakyu… Agh.
Masumi: You’re really fumbling your words even though it’s just practice?
Citron: Sakuya, slacks, slacks~.
Masumi: Relax.
Director: It’s okay, Sakuya-kun.
Director: We do after-talks after regular performances too, so just have fun with this one like you usually do.
Sakuya: Okay…!
Manager: Everyone, it’s time for you to go out! Please do your best!
Citron: Let’s go~!
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Citron: Everyone! Thank you for waiting! I’m Spring Troupe’s Citron~.
Masumi: Spring Troupe, Masumi Usui.
Sakuya: Hello, everyone!
Sakuya: Thank you for coming to today’s viewing of “Romeo and Julius”! I’m Spring Troupe’s Sakuya Sakuma!
Sakuya: Phew.
Masumi: …Thank god.
Citron: I knew that Sakuya would be resilient in the real performance! Even though in practice he was fumbling over his words.
Masumi: You didn’t mess up your own name this time.
Sakuya: Y-You guys! Don’t say that here…!
Audience: Ahahaha, so cute~!
Sakuya: Umm, thank you for watching today. “Romeo and Julius” was the first production of the Newborn Spring Troupe…
Citron: I still think the friar has too few lines. Everyone, I want you to send an email to Tsuzuru to tell him to rewrite the script!
Citron: Tsuzuru’s email address is…
Sakuya: Waaah! Citron-san, don’t do that!
Masumi: That’s personal information, remember?
Audience: Ahahaha!
Sakuya: Is there anything in particular that you remember about the RomiJuli performance, Masumi-kun?
Masumi: …There was this one time when Sakuya was taking a nap in between rehearsals, and he suddenly jumped awake.
Citron: Oh! I remember that!
Sakuya: …Ah! That time!
Sakuya: That was… I was trying not to get too worked up about the performance, but I had a dream that I skipped over some of my lines during a show…
Sakuya: When I woke up, I frantically reread the script over and over again.
Sakuya: I’d like to say that kind of episode was unique to just the first performance but… I still have dreams like that sometimes.
Sakuya: But now, whenever that happens, Citron-san always joins me in reading the script.
Sakuya: Despite how it may sound, I think dreams like that are a good reminder to myself.
Citron: That’s our Sakuya! Always looking to the blight side!
Sakuya: Blight? Blight side?
Masumi: He means bright side.
Citron: That! Now, whenever he jumps awake from a dream, we read the script together!
Sakuya: Thank you for that!
Sakuya: Out of Spring Troupe… Tsuzuru-kun probably has the most similar problem.
Citron: Absolutely! If that happens, he can just read the script with Masumi.
Masumi: Nope. Too much work.
Sakuya: Don’t say that!
Masumi: …Sigh, I’ll think about it.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Citron: That’s it for the talk show, good work!
Masumi: Good work.
Sakuya: Good work!
Director: You all did so well!
Director: Well then, Sakuya-kun, it’s time to take your polaroid picture.
Sakuya: Okay! That’s the thing Sakyo-san was talking about, the giveaway!
Masumi: I just want a polaroid of you. I’ll enter the giveaway for it.
Director: There is no polaroid of me.
Sakuya: Umm… I’m still in my RomiJuli costume, do you want me to do an in-character look?
Director: That could work. Let’s try taking a pic like that. Okay, say cheese.
Citron: Oh! You look very nice! Very law-inspiring!
Masumi: You mean, “awe-inspiring”.
Director: Alright, next let’s take a pic of our usual Sakuya-kun.
Sakuya: O-Okay.
Director: Your smile seems a little stiff. Just relax and smile a bit more.
Masumi: Haa… You’re so cute being a photographer like that…
Citron: Your smiling is not what matters now, Masumi.
Sakuya: Ahaha.
Director: (Good, the conversation between Citron-kun and Masumi-kun seems to have eased the tension.)
Director: Let’s try again.
Sakuya: Okay!
Citron: Let’s see, let’s see~.
Citron: Oh, very good! That’s the big Sakuya smile we all know and love!
Masumi: Yeah, just the same as usual.
Director: Fufu, the usual Sakuya-kun is the best kind of Sakuya-kun.
Sakuya: Thank you!
Director: Well then, all that’s left is for you to sign the polaroid and bring it to me later.
Sakuya: Okay!

Director: (Today’s screening and talk show was a big success.)
Director: (Since this was the first performance, there must’ve been a lot of people who haven’t seen the show yet, so I’m glad we planned to screen it too.)
Director: Huh? I wonder… Could this be the reference material Tsuzuru-kun used to write RomiJuli?
Director: I was actually looking for different reference material, but…
Director: (There are all kinds of pictures with descriptions. This is the town where RomiJuli was set.)
Director: (Such a pretty place…)
*Dream Start*
Director: …Where am I?
Director: (Cobblestone and brick streets… I feel like I’ve seen this somewhere before…)
Director: (It’s just like the town I saw in the reference material!)
Imperial Guard: Oi, you, what are you doing over there!?
Director: Eh, me?
Imperial Guard: You, the mysterious woman. You’re in front of the House Montague. What are you doing here?!
Director: Th-This is a misunderstanding! I’m just lost…!
Imperial Guard: Stop making up silly excuses. Come with me!
Director: Please just listen to what I’m saying!
???: What’s all the fuss about?
Director: (Sakuya-kun!?)
Director: (Wait, no. That costume… That’s not Sakuya-kun, that’s--.)
Imperial Guard: Sir Romeo! I’m about to arrest this mysterious woman.
Imperial Guard: I’m sure you’ve gotten lost, just as you said, but there’s no way you haven’t heard that the House Montague is around this area.
Director: Umm, I’m not from this town though…
Romeo: Are you from outside of here?
Director: Y-Yeah.
Romeo: …
Romeo: I’ll take care of her.
Imperial Guard: B-But…
Romeo: It doesn’t matter, you can go now. Please return to your job.
Imperial Guard: Y-Yes.
Director: Thank you, I’m very thankful.
Romeo: You’re welcome.
Director: Umm… But why did you help me?
Romeo: Actually, I have an interest in the outside world! I wanna see even more of the vast world.
Romeo: --Hey, what kind of place is your hometown? What kind of food is good there? Is it by the sea?
Director: (Romeo’s eyes are really sparkling. It’s a little like Sakuya-kun.)
Romeo: Alright! How about you tell me all about it over some tea!
Director: Eh, wait a second.
Romeo: C’mon, let’s go! This way!
Director: Romeo--.
*Dream Ends*
Director: --!
Director: A dream, huh… I must’ve fallen asleep for a bit.
Sakuya: Ah, Director! There you are.
Director: Rome… No, Sakuya-kun. Umm, what’s up?
Sakuya: I came here to bring you the signed polaroid.
Director: Thanks, I’ll take it.

Director: Your smile is so cheerful and bright, Sakuya-kun, it makes me wanna smile too.
Sakuya: Really? Thank you so much!
Sakuya: I also feel my heart warming when I see your smile.
Sakuya: I love your smile, Director.
Director: …Thank you, Sakuya-kun.
Director: (It’s a little embarrassing… But that makes me happy.)

Choice 2: The Romeo version is also really cool.

Director: Your usual smile is, of course, the best, but the Romeo version that we took is also really cool.
Director: You’ve really become more capable of making various facial expressions and acting too, haven’t you, Sakuya-kun?
Sakuya: You think so? Hearing that from you makes me really happy, Director!
Sakuya: Of course, Romeo is just one of them, but I really love every role I’ve played and I’ve learned a lot from them all.
Sakuya: I really wanna keep doing lots and lots of different plays in the future!
Sakuya: Director, I’m looking forward to continuing to work with you!
Director: Same goes to you.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Director: Oh. This is the research material I found a while ago…
Sakuya: Uwaah, is this the town from RomiJuli?
Director: Mhm. It really is a lovely place.
Sakuya: It really is! Such a pretty town…
Sakuya: Ah, this park… It looks like somewhere where Romeo and Julius would take a nap under the shade of a tree!
Sakuya: And this church is perfect for Father Lawrence! And this wide street over here that’s lined with all the shops is--.
Director: (Sakuya-kun’s eyes are sparkling. Fufu, just like Romeo’s.)
Sakuya: Something up, Director?
Director: Hmm. Just thinking how Romeo really is perfect for you, Sakuya-kun.

Unexpectedly Pleasant
Shoichiro Yukimura x Sotaro Kano
The eldest sibling of the Yukimura's had been bummed all day. He and Sotaro had spent the day of the festival planning hangouts. And as today had been the first one, it was obvious he'd be upset for having to cancel his plans.
Shoichiro loved his sister. But she always got what she wanted. So even after the persistent begging of her brother to not make up any new plans, she just wouldn't listen. Now the siblings sat inside Ruri's favorite cafe eating parfaits.
"Big brother, are you okay?" Rina had noticed the gloomy expression her brother had been wearing all day. "Did I do something bad?" Even she knew some things she did were wrong. But she was too small to understand how much her actions affected those around her. "Ah Ruri! Of course not. What makes you think that?"
She placed her spoon into the empty cup and held her hands under the table. "Well, you were going out with your boyfriend today, right?"
.
.
.
"He's choking!"
"Sir are you okay?"
"Oh my God! I've never seen someone die before!"
"Big brother are you okay? Should I call your boyfriend?"
"He isn't my boyfriend!" He wished she would stop that. Today wasn't the first time she'd stated the idea of them as a couple. His sister had always believed the two were closer than friends. It started the day Usui and her had gone out. Kano had walked with them home. Naturally Ruri was curious about who he was. So after they'd introduced theirselves, she threw questions left and right about their relationship. To her it was quite obvious they were more than 'friends'.
After his choking incident Shoichiro had decided that it was time to leave. He payed and out the door he went.
They walked along the sidewalk hand in hand. The streets were filled with chatter. It being Saturday boys and girls had littered the streets in huddles. "Big brother?" Unlike everyone else, the siblings were quiet; only speaking to apologize when they bumped into someone. "Yes?" Her face was calm. "I think we should go home now." He stopped and looked towards her. "Why is something wrong?"
"Um no. It's just..." His overprotective brothey instincts kicked in as he realized once again something was wrong. "Ruri it's okay. You can tell me." She looked away from him and focused on the ground. "Well, I was just thinking that if we got home sooner you'd still be able to hangout with your bo- friend."
He smiled. "Ruri that's so sweet of you. But it's probably too late. The cafe we were going to go to closes soon." Her previously calm expression left as a frown now lay on her face. "Im sorry. But I'd still like to go home." Shoichiro nodded at that. They'd finished their day and were on their way home.
.
.
.
The walk home seemed shorter for Shoichiro. His mind seemed to be in the wrong place, leading to him talking to himself. "Maybe I should call Kano later... But what would I say? Calling without a reason is weird. I could apologize for canceling the plans. But I already did that." He most definitely did. To the point that Kano had to tell him to stop.
"I could accidentally call him, hang up, and see if he calls back. If he does I'll tell him it was an accident and start up a conversation!"
"Your overthinking this! Just tell him you want to talk." Ruri had overheard him muttering. "I specialize in Romance. Listen to me big brother."
"How many times do I have to tell you. We're not dating..."
She talked and talked the rest of the way, stopping when they reached home. They walked in to an empty house. Their parents had left in the morning; probably out for the day. It seemed Shoichiro wouldn't be able to go out saying he had to take care of Ruri.
2:05
"Hey, are you gonna call him now?" They had taken care of their necessities and sat in the elders room. It'd just been them joking around and playing with dolls till she spoke up. He sighed. "No. I don't want to be a bother if he's bu- huh?"
RING!
Ringing sounds erupted around him. His phone, which he had left on the bedside table, began lighting up and buzzing. He perked up, hoping it was Misaki or a classmate. It was still the weekend so he wanted some contact with friends.
He went to get it but Ruri hopped up faster than he could and grabbed the phone.
"Hello, Ruri Yukimura speaking!" Across the room Shoichiro looked at Ruri mouthing 'Who is it?'. She shrugged her shoulders indicating she didn't know yet. "Hello?" A womanly voice spook up from the phone. "Mommy!"
"Ruri! Hello sweetheart. Where's your brother?"
"We're in his room playing with my dolls!"
"Ah I see. Could you give the phone to him please?" She frowned upset that she'd have to cut their conversation short. "But I want to talk to you some more. I haven't seen you all day!" You could here the sadness in her voice. "Ruri." Her mothers threatening tone reached her ears and she knew she was in for it if she didn't give up the phone. "Yes ma'am... Big brother mommy wants to talk to you."
She went back across his room towards the desk carrying the phone and a frown. He took it from her and she went back to playing with her dolls on the floor.
"Hello? Mom?"
"Hello honey. I'm sorry but we'll be a little late home. There was a terrible car accident up ahead and traffics insane." He could hear the honkings of nearby cars. Ambulances seemed to be going to the scene as sirens faded in and out from the phone. "Oh. Okay please get home safe."
"We will. Love you. I love you Ruri!" His phones volume was up so she could clearly hear her. "I love you too mommy!" His mother hung up and a beep rang around the room.
"Let's go get a snack!" Shoichiro stood up, slinging Ruri over his shoulder. "Yeah!"

Rina Hidaka Newly Cast as Pirika in Shaman King Reboot Anime instead of The Late Tomoko Kawakami
The official website for the upcoming reboot TV anime based on Hiroyuki Takei's Shaman King manga announced today that Rina Hidaka (Wiene in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) is newly cast as Pirika Usui, Horohoro's little sister who came to Tokyo to support her brother.
The bright, energetic, and stable character was voiced by the late Tomoko Kawakami in the first TV anime in 2001-2002. Kawakami passed away in June 2011 at the age of 41.
Comments from Rina Hidaka:
[Charm of the Shaman King series]
"All the characters are attractive. Among them, Yo Asakura-kun is unusually loose and fluffy for a protagonist of a battle series, but when he has to be cool, he's cool! He is a character that I am attracted to because of his sense of balance."
[Enthusiasm for playing the role of Pirika]
"I was surprised and honored to be involved in the long-loved Shaman King. I hope I can learn a lot from this opportunity to act surrounded by wonderful senior voice actors. Pirika is a hard-working girl with a strong sense of justice who loves her big brother. Along with my big brother, I'd like to ask for your support!"
