Quick Eustace Sketch to celebrate the official release of AAI2 ^^

I’m not going to be able to play this game until November due to semester finals, but I’ve taken a quick look at a couple of Stacey’s lines from case 2, and I give them the Winning Stamp of Approval - I didn’t think it was possible for me to adore this character's writing more than I already did, but they somehow made it!

(Minor otl spoilers below)

Somehow they managed to make Stacey talk eerily similar to how I did as a teen (minus the calling people losers part, I hope I was a bit nicer back then). Just… The use of a saying, thinking it has a completely literal meaning, only to find out that it means something entirely different later on. And by “later”, I mean I literally only found out today what “sweet nothings” is really supposed to mean. I’m in this picture and I don’t like it. This was already kinda there in the ftl, but somehow it’s even worse (read: better) in the otl! There’s also a lot more energy to all the lines, and they read a lot more natural than the ftl, at least to me.

I’m surprised at how well they managed to adapt this unusual manner of speaking without directly copying the fan localization. Like I said, I’ve only really seen some of case 2 dialogue so I don’t really know if it’s like this for the entire game, or if the plot relevant malapropisms will be carried over, but fingers crossed. The ftl set such a high standard for this game that I'm sure there are a few things here or there that I’ll prefer the fanon, but that's to be expected when it's existed for a decade. I'm sure those who're experiencing this game for the first time now will have as great of an experience as I did with the fan version.

Besides, I couldn’t do this with the ftl, could I?

Okay, I have some time now, so let’s get into The Great Adventure.

Now, this was back when I was wrapping up my playthrough of GAAC and was deciding whether I wanted to play AAI or the Apollo Justice Trilogy (as it’s called by people who have never played it or know what a trilogy is, apparently) and it turns out that, in a discord server for musicals, I met someone who had AAI and was willing to let me borrow it and, even better, lived in the same state as me. (Washington state, which I mention because the geography is going to be important later) Now, they could have sent it to me but for the next few weeks, I would be difficult to pin down as I was going to Idaho for Christmas and from there Utah to see Hamilton on tour and from there New Orleans where I would board a cruise ship that would take me around the Caribbean for about a week.

But I have a friend who said, hey, I have a full tank of gas and snow tires (remember what I said about geography - there is a mountain range that runs right down the middle of the state, and experiences more severe weather than on either side. On my side, it’s essentially a desert. On the side of the friend who had AAI, it’s a coastal town. But to get from either mild weather, you have to pass the mountain range.), let’s just go get it ourselves. I messaged my friend and they said great, I’ll be at the bowling alley I work at but you can come get it and maybe play a round or two.

This is December 23, but not a problem. It’s about a four hour drive to cross the state but I should easily be able to get there, get the game and then get back home and get some sleep before my brother picks me up on Christmas Eve and we drive back to Idaho, where we’ll meet up with our parents and go to the family Christmas party. Spoiler alert: the family Christmas party mentioned in the original post is a different year, cause we didn’t end up making it this time.

We got through the mountain pass just fine when the first problem happened: I got a message from my friend. They had fallen at work and couldn’t feel their arm and were being taken to the hospital. However, we were still welcome to come get the game from them there, so that’s what we do.

We get to the hospital, get the game, and sit with them for awhile until they’re called back for x-rays. It’s 10 pm now, which is later than we wanted to be heading back, but it’s not like we were just going to leave them in the hospital.

However, we encounter a problem as we try to leave town - we’ve run over a nail in the road leaving the hospital and got a flat tire. Now, annoying, but shouldn’t be the end of the world.. Except my friend has a very specific type of bolt that requires a special wrench to remove, and none of the companies in town open that time of night have it. I know this, because I called every single one of them. It’s now well past midnight on Christmas Eve and we are stranded until a more conventional car repair shop opens.

We find a hotel that has an open room at a somewhat reasonable price, but we have nowhere to get there. That’s when my friend called the state troopers and explained the situation and they sent a cruiser to drive us to the hotel.

In the back of the cruiser, I realized that I didn’t have AAI in my pocket like I thought, and under so much stress and thinking it was all for nothing, I burst into tears.

So there you have it.

That’s how I ended up in the back of a police cruiser at 2 AM crying over Miles Edgeworth on Christmas Eve.

(For the curious, by the way, while I found AAI in my friend’s car, the story was not easy going from there on either, though. The state trooper in question had his phone hooked up to the Bluetooth in the car so the stereo said what he was listening to, which was Money, Money, Money from the Mamma Mia! Movie. I said “Mamma Mia fan?” And he said “It’s ABBA.” And I said “it says “Meryl Streep” right there.” And he went quiet for at least a minute before very quietly saying “it’s a good movie.”

The room in the hotel was dirty but we were too tired to care so we just slept in unmade beds, it was a $40 uber to the car repair shop where we were finally able to get the tire changed and then, when the time came to get back on the road, a storm had blown in and the mountain pass we had taken had been closed, forcing us to detour down through Oregon to get home, where I was immediately passed off to my brother for the eight hour drive to Idaho, which got us back after the annual family Christmas party had ended.)

Ultimately, the experience to get the game lasted longer than it took to play the game itself.

However, I’m always a slut for Miles Edgeworth, so 15/10 anyway.

no but listen what really gets me about wrightworth is the comfort of it. it doesn't even need to be regarded as a romantic ship (there's so many ways to interpret their relationship anyway) in order to understand why they gravitate to the other.

every time i see wrightworth art where they simply exist. simple live together and make coffee in the morning and eat lunch somewhere and all the other mundane everyday things, i can't help but think "finally, they can just be, after everything".

their journey was so long and complicated that them being in the same room, at peace, for more than 5 minutes is so meaningful. they fought for that moment of peace. to simply be in the other's presence.

Dazai Osamu

Dazai's kisses are flirty. He likes to pull you in your lap while you kiss and it often turns inot make out sessions. His hands are always wondering around your body any chance he gets. He often smirks in between kisses when you squirm. He also loves quick kisses, because he catches you off guard with them. If you get flustered easily, he would do it even more often than usual.

Chuuya Nakhara

Chuuya's kisses are passionate. He doesn't like quick kissed more than the normal ones. Of course, he still does them. But he would always prefer to take his time when kissing you. He puts a lot of passion in every single one of them. One of his hand is usually between your cheek and collarbone (somewhere in the area) and his other is on your waist. Most of the time if he doesn't takes his hat off it bumps to your head and falls to the ground. (At first he was embarrassed about it happening, but not anymore.). He also likes when your legs wrap around his waist, because that way you feel closer, while you kiss.

Atsushi Nakajima

Atsushi's kisses are sweet. He puts all of his love into a single kiss. He loves giving you quick kisses, but he also likes the long ones, either way, he will actually show you how much he loves kissing you. His hands usually everytime have a different place, because he can't even decide where to put them. Every time after he kisses you, he tells you he loves you. Just to remind you. (Not that he didn't with the kiss.)

Akutagawa Ryonosuke

Akutagawa's kisses are careless. At first he was scared to kiss you. And to be honest, he kind of still is. His handa never have any idea where to go and he usually doesn't say anything particular after the kiss. He still kisses you so careless tho, because he knows that you love it when he kiss you, and trust me he loves it too. Would he ever admit that? Absolutely not. But you can feel it in the kiss, so.

Tecchou Suehiro

Tecchou's kisses are gentle. Let's be real, this man is strong asf, but he is also oh so gentle with you. His hands are always around your waist, even while kissing you. But is his grip tight? Nope. He holds you like you are a made of glass. Don't let me started on the kissing itself. Teruko once even asked you if you are scared of him doing something. He just is so gentle.

Jouno Seigiku

Jouno's kisses are rough. Yes, the complete opposite of Tecchou's. He bites on your lips, hands squeezing your body, pushing you against a wall, you name it. He's a sadist, what do you expect? Of course he never does it enough to actually hurt you, maybe just a little. But that's for your own pleasure trust me. He almost never kisses quick, because if those reasons.

Fyodor Dostoevsky

Fyodor's kisses are cold. Not exactly in the aay you're thinking of. They are full of love trust me, but his hands and his lips feel a little cold on your skin and when he puts more pressure onto your lips and his grip, you might squirm a little. He will wonder around with his hands, not because he doesn't know where to put them, but because he loves your reactions to it.

Nikolai Gogol

Nikolai's kisses are funny. He smiles, giggles against your lips, tickles you while you kiss all of a sudden, pick you up out of nowhere, all kinds of different stuff. Quick kisses are soooo common with him, he does them often and out of the blue so it catches you off guard. If you do them to him tho, ohh be prepared to run, cuz he's already trapped you and showering with kisses.

Sigma

Sigma's kisses are simple. He gives the most normal kisses out of everyone, but somehow they always feel different. It sounds cliché, really, but you can feel the love through his kisses. Both of his hands are usually around on your cheeks or resting on your neck. Quick kisses are also common with him, but for the same reason. He likes them, because he thinks it's cute that every time he kisses a different place on your face.

Oh definitely. I still feel this way even after getting another dog. I don't know if I truly was ready or not and sometimes, in ways, I regret getting another. She is wonderful and staying with us, and I like her a lot. But yet...It wrenches my heart often. Getting a new dog doesn't magically make you healed or happy... It just is different I guess. Getting another Greyhound opened a lot of weird wounds I didn't expect but looking back I shouldn't be surprised.

Anyway yes, don't feel like it's wrong or bad to not be ready. You don't have to pretend to be happy or over it. We all move on different timelines through grief and that's okay ❤️

I kinda love that so many of us who lost our dogs suddenly this past year have found unique forms of love in this new year.

pardon me if you’re tired of discussing this but. we know aa7 is on capcom’s radar on some level. and now they’ve rereleased every game right?? they’ve finally run out of backlog material after almost yearly releases since 2019…. Not to put the clown wig and nose back on too early but do you think we’ll actually get news about, or get to see, aa7 next year?

Never tired of discussing this!! This is right around the time of year where I'd be preparing to make my yearly AA7 Speculation Post anyway so this is great timing. (TGS, my enemy, is approaching.)

So just to make sure everyone's on the same page, here's a quick recap of where we're currently at:

In November 2020 we got internal Capcom leaks which included a calendar from 2019 with the roadmap for the AA series the next couple of years. This included:

DGS1&2 collection, which I did not think was going to happen ever, releasing April-June 2021

AA7, releasing around October-December 2021, right around the 20th anniversary.

Through late 2019-mid 2022, reconsider porting 456

We got DGS1&2 (a bit later than in the plan, but by like a month), we got the 456 ports, we got bonus AAI ports, we have nothing for AA7 nearly three years after it was supposed to come out. The pandemic is an obvious feature that could contribute to its delay, but at this point with 456 ports out I think we can safely say that this was not the only cause.

Some other things that may or may not be contributing to AA7's delay include:

Yamazaki, the previous main writer for 5&6 and the AAIs, left Capcom in 2020. If he was involved in AA7 at all, that could throw a wrench into things, but I recall hearing he intended AA6 to be his last AA game (I AM STRUGGLING TO FIND THE SOURCE THOUGH SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME), so I don't think this contributed very much. It does, however, mean that we're unsure about who the next main writer is - depending on what Takumi's up to or if they had to bring someone new on, there could be complications related to that.

I think TGAA did way better than anyone expected, which I covered in this post. It's possible that this could have shifted Capcom's priorities to porting more old games / porting to all modern consoles. It may have made people at Capcom think "damn everyone loves Takumi" so they tried to lure him back to AA7, and I have no idea how well that would have gone or if Takumi is even interested in continuing mainline AA right now. (I do think this at least contributed to the Ghost Trick ports.)

In my first ever AA7 speculation post I talked about how the ending of AA6 kind of wrote them into a corner re: how to continue with the series and which protagonist to use. I still stand by that argument even if a lot of that post aged badly.

Console ports! Previously new AA games were for whichever Nintendo handheld is out now (GBA, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS). But now that the series is doing really well on all consoles, they may have decided to try to make their next mainline entry on all consoles, which would take more development time. Adding to this is that the Switch is near the end of its lifecycle with the Switch 2 (or whatever the successor will be) being announced soon - meaning that, if AA7 is coming out soon, Capcom is in the position of "do we try to squeeze this into the end of the Switch's lifecycle" (which, I'll need to find sources for this, is speculated to be some of the reasons behind why AAI2 and DGS2 sold badly when they were first released, and they can't make the same mistake thrice... right...?) or "do we try to time it with the release of the Switch 2"?

Also, a lot of this depends on how far AA7 was into development whenever it was derailed. If it was derailed from the pandemic, then according to the calendar, it would likely have still been in the prototype stage. It may be early enough that they would have had to start from scratch whenever they picked it up again. I don't work in the gaming industry so I have no idea how long it takes them to make a game or how easy it would be from what stage they're in.

One thing we can compare to is some of the comments about the recent AAI ports: in this interview, Shunsuke Nishida, the producer of the AAI collection, says that development on the collection began in 2022. He also mentions that this began once development on 456 was concluded. This leads me to believe that (contrary to my previous assumptions) 456 and AAIC were not developed concurrently (or if so, had very minimal overlap), and that the process of upscaling graphics, porting, and localization took them... about a year, maybe? So that takes time, even without taking into consideration how long it would take to come up with a new idea + write the script + the bulk of the programming that would have to be done that isn't considered with porting + probably way more than I can think of because again I do not work in the gaming industry.

There's also the question of why 456 and AAIC weren't developed concurrently. The calendar from 2020 shows that TGAA and AA7 were meant to be developed at least somewhat concurrently, and the staff from TGAA would eventually merge into working on AA7. Once again, we don't know what happened to the staff that were supposed to be working on AA7. It's possible pandemic complications meant they got shuffled onto other projects. It's possible the AA-related team is smaller now than it was in 2020, so they only have enough people to work on one project at a time. It's also possible that there's a team that was working on ports, and a team that was working on a new game, and now the "port team" is freed up to work on the "new game team".

Either way though, pretty much every interview with the staff for the 456 or AAI ports are all saying "look forward to the future of the series", which is definitely Corporate Speak, but unless they're bringing the ports of the Layton crossover (fingers crossed) that can only mean one thing. (AAI anime?) Plus, like I've discussed in this post, AA is having fantastic sales in general. They've seemingly either hired a new social media manager or changed the strategy so there is much more engagement on twitter. And AA is getting on bigger and bigger announcements - though AA trilogy ports were announced at TGS (at an AA-specific panel), TGAA duology ports were announced unceremoniously on twitter. Afterwards, 456 ports got announced at the Capcom Showcase during Summer Game Fest. And now AAI collection got announced at a Nintendo Direct, which I imagine is even more expensive, so the series must be going in a good direction for them to think that's worth it!

That's a lot of rambling for me to say I definitely think it's coming.

When are we going to see it though!!

Coming up in September is my eternal enemy Tokyo Game Show. Since AAI collection is being released at the beginning of September... it might be a bit too soon to announce a new game, but who knows. They might think it's profitable to ride the hype they're building now for AAI collection to announce a new game. Or they might let it sit for a while.

With AAIC getting announced at a Direct, I'm thinking they'll want to make AA7's announcement a) big and b) global. AA6 was announced in Famitsu, but the problem with that is that it's a mostly Japanese audience, and some interviews have been talking about how AA's global audience is particularly contributing to how big it is right now. So I'm expecting AA's next announcement to be at something major and something that will get attention from overseas audiences.

If they have been working on AA7 concurrently -- and honestly I do think there has at least been some progress on it since 2019 -- we could definitely see an announcement within the next year. I was also saying this in 2020, though, so don't take my word for it. There's been two year gaps between ports up until the AAI collection, and they seemed pretty proud about releasing 456 and AAI in the same year, so... maybe they'll want to keep it going and announce AA7 within the next year, especially if they'll have a longer announcement -> release period than they normally would for ports.

Potential candidates include:

Tokyo Game Show: As previously stated, it's very close to the AAIC release, so I don't think it's the best timing for it. I would not want my favorite AA game overshadowed by whatever the hell they're going to do with AA7. Likelihood: depends on how fast they want to follow up on the hype.

The Game Awards: is the next major gaming event, but that's already massive in terms of the type of games that get announced there, and it's expensive! Nintendo Direct is one thing since AA has always been a Nintendo-first series, but I don't think it's big enough to justify putting in a Game Awards ad. and I already have my clown wig on for persona 6 there. Likelihood: pretty low tbh

Next Year's Summer Game Fest-related Shows: I think this is the most likely, considering both the 456 collection and the AAI collection were announced around this time. For AA7 I'd say a Nintendo Direct to get lots of eyes on it, especially if AAIC sales pay off. Likelihood: pretty high!

Which leads me into my wildcard answer:

Switch 2 Announcement Stream: If Capcom decides to go in and make AA7 one of the first games for whatever the switch successor would be, it could be announced here. I regret to admit that I am a very bad gamer and only like two things, and therefore have not ever been present for one of these things to know how many games get announced as launch games for a new console, but, like, it's possible.

In the above scenario, I'm not necessarily saying that AA7 would be a Switch 2 exclusive - because I think that would be stupid after so much of the support they've gotten from the ports has been from playstation and steam - but I am definitely the kind of person who would buy a console for one video game. Shoutout to me buying a switch in part anticipating that aa7 would come out on it and that is not looking likely

Anyways, that's my speculation!! Reminder that this is mostly uninformed and that I have no knowledge of anything related to sales or marketing or video game development, and as a result of that, I have been wrong (aside from the one time I accurately predicted AAI ports as a joke) for four consecutive years.

Manfred von Karma!

Thank you for the ask <3 (to every else who sent me a character ask, I'm working on it :)

First impression

I actually never hated him or had strong feelings about him. I was introduced to AA through narumitsu fanfic but I knew I wanted to play the games so I avoided everything with spoilers, including everything Manfred. I guess I just thought of him vaguely as a villain and Miles' mentor/father figure.

Impression now

He's one of my favorite Ace Attorney characters. I have him at 4th but honestly, maybe he's 3rd now?? I have developed an attachment to this ridiculous evil man. I love him so much. I wish there was more canon content of him, but I think he's an interesting character with a lot of room for nuance.

Favorite moment

He doesn't really have many canon moments (and I haven't played AAI). But probably when he gloated Phoenix into cross-examining Polly the parrot and it's implied that he witness-coached a parrot. Manfred, you are an insane person.

Idea for a story

I just want to see a story where Manfred is force-fed a redemption arc. Like for example a no DL-6 AU where Gregory manages to get a Manfred properly investigated for forging evidence. But to ensure he doesn't get another penalty, Manfred tries to frame another prosecutor to throw Gregory off his trail.

Only, Manfred finds out that the person he is framing is actually guilty of forging evidence. Manfred has to follow through with his plan and gets dragged into working with Gregory. Gregory is surprised but grateful that Manfred has been so helpful in weeding out corruption in the prosecutor's office, and wants to befriend/ally with Manfred. Manfred is seething with hatred. (Oh and eventual Shingou :)

Unpopular opinion

Manfred as a character deserves a lot more nuance. There's... a lot to talk about but these are the three main things I have a strong opinion on:

1) He was a flawed parent and I think it's more interesting to explore those flaws than to just label him abusive for the sake of villainizing him.

2) It does not makes sense for Manfred to be sexist/homophobic/etc. Simply because I don't think he cares enough to hate a group of people like that. He is very rational, efficient, and his perfectionism is focused on his prosecuting career. If anything, he discriminates against defense attorneys (lmao).

3) Manfred didn't brainwash or force Miles into becoming a prosecutor. I'm sure Manfred was influential but Miles had his own reason to be a prosecutor that stemmed from DL-6. Miles was also always a perfectionist (the paper cranes thing) and the von Karma family brand of perfectionism just amplified it.

Favorite relationship

Shingou!! <3 (Gregory Edgeworth/Manfred von Karma)

Defense attorney/prosecutor ship, toxic enemies to lovers, doomed romance, or super slowburn (if no DL-6 AU), bitter courtroom rivals turned bickering old married couple (who still duke it out in court), co-parenting Miles and Franziska (before officially getting together).

Favorite headcanon

Manfred did love Franziska and Miles (in his own way). Regarding Miles, Manfred saw him as a symbol of his failures (the penalty Gregory gave him and the shot in his shoulder). So Manfred struggled a lot when he began to actually care about Miles. When Miles's perfect record was broken, Manfred saw it as a threat to his own perfection. (I hope that makes sense. I do need to think about this more to solidify the headcanon. I just love complicated von Karma family dynamics)

How many Ace Attorney cases would be solved immediately if they used the Divination Seance?

For those who don’t know, the Divination Seance is a mechanic introduced in the 6th main Ace Attorney game: Spirit of Justice. The way it works is that a spirit medium communes with the soul of the dead, and makes their final memories visible in the Pool of Souls. All of their senses are displayed, from what they saw to what they heard to what they smelled before they died. In game, the Divination Seance is usually used to Phoenix’s disadvantage (obviously), but what I wanted to know is what would happen if the Divination Seance was used in cases that took place not in the Kingdom of Khura’in. If the court could see what the victim saw seconds before their death, how much would that fuck over the real killer? Let’s go through the death of (almost) every single victim and find out: would this case be solved if they used the Divination Seance? This will be updated with each game every day, unless I forget.

(Thanks to my buddy Keepay for helping me out with this! He did all of the AAI 1 and 2 cases because my memory on those is pretty fuzzy.)

Things to Remember: 

Divination Seance is derived from the victim’s memories, meaning if they don’t recognize a person’s voice, they won’t be able to identify it.

Divination Seance only works if the victim’s true name (and less importantly, what they look like) is known.

The victim has to actually be dead for a Seance to be possible.

Ace Attorney 1

Cindy Stone - YES

Frank had already broken into Cindy's home when she walked in, so there’s no way she wouldn’t have seen him before he bludgeoned her. A Divination Seance would clearly show this.

Mia Fey - NO

At first, this looks like the exact same situation as the Cindy Stone case. Mia and Redd White were face-to-face before she died, so he would’ve clearly shown up in the Divination Seance, right? 

But then there’s that damn updated autopsy report. 

Edgeworth stated that Mia lived for a few minutes after she was hit, and Divination Seances only show the last few seconds of the victim’s life. This means that the Divination Seance wouldn’t have shown the actual bludgeoning, or Redd White. As suspect as that updated autopsy report is, Edgeworth himself said that he never forged evidence, so we have to take him at his word here. 

Jack Hammer - YES

Dee and Jack were face-to-face when she pushed him. I don’t think we ever learn the details of their struggle, so maybe it would still be unclear whether or not it was self defense on Vasquez’s part.

Robert Hammond - YES

Again again, Yanni and Hammond saw each other before Yanni shot Hammond in the heart. We don’t get a lot of details about what happened in the shack, but we have no reason to assume this wasn’t the case. I promise these are gonna get more interesting.

Gregory Edgeworth - MAYBE

So in this case, the Divination Seance would show that the defendants (Miles Edgeworth and Yanni Yogi in this case) are innocent, but wouldn’t show who the culprit is, so I’m gonna say at the very least, it’s partially solved. The Seance would reveal that Gregory didn’t die when Miles threw the gun, and that all three of them passed out before the second gunshot was fired. However, we know from Von Karma’s testimony that Gregory was unconscious when he was shot, so he wouldn’t have seen his killer’s face. 

But! Miles said that he heard Von Karma scream right after he threw the gun, obviously that means that Gregory heard it too. The question is, would he have recognized it as Von Karma’s voice, and would it have shown up as Von Karma’s voice in the Pool of Souls? To answer that, I point you towards Inga’s Divination Seance. Here he recognizes the voice he’s talking to over the phone as one of his subordinates (after a refining from Rayfa) but even after it’s proven that Datz was the one laughing over the phone, the sound still shows up in the pool as just “Laughter.”

This is why it’s important to remember that the Divination Seance is derived from the victim’s memories. Inga recognized his subordinate's voice (but probably not his name, lol) but he didn’t know what Datz’s voice sounds like, at least not well enough to recognize it. In the same vein, Gregory would absolutely recognize Von Karma’s voice because they just spend the whole day in court together, as well as them meeting during the investigation. 

Now what this really all boils down to is if Gregory would recognize Von Karma screaming in particular. Miles didn’t recognize the voice even though he also knew Von Karma, but he was also a stressed and delirious kid when he heard the scream. Gregory’s memories are probably more reliable, and he’s probably heard Von Karma shouting either during the Inherited Turnabout investigation or the trial afterward. But, as much as I wanna say this is a yes, we can’t know for sure.

Bruce Goodman - YES

After that long-winded explanation, we’re back to another easy one. Bruce and Damon were alone in the evidence room when Damon did the deed, so he would clearly show up in the vision, or at the very least, his voice would be heard.

Neil Marshall - NO

This is another Gregory situation, but unfortunately much more unclear. Neil was unconscious when he died so he wouldn’t have seen Gant but at least it would be clear that neither Ema or Darke killed him. Neil had already knocked out Darke when Ema pushed him, and it would’ve been clear that Neil didn’t die from Ema’s shove, but much later. Of course, since Neil was blacked out, the argument could be made that Darke woke up first, and simply stabbed Neil while Neil was unconscious. Even with the Divination Seance, there’s no way to prove that Gant did the deed.

tbh at first i dont think shadow would know what a system is

like sure, he grew up in a medical environment... but that doctoring was focused pmuch exclusively on physical disabilities, not mental illnesses.

even if he did find a DSM-I or something, he wouldnt have heard anything abt DID. though there are reports of it going back literal hundreds of years, they only got the proper term for it in like 2013, and it was pmuch nowhere in the dsm until recently.

even then, so so so many people act like it doesnt exist. like it isnt legit. even now, and especially back then.

i think that would cause shadow a lotta frustration. he tries to race sonic, just to be hit w 'sonic' aaying smt like "im sorry, love, hes not at front today. i can relay the message, though!"

tbh i think shadow would get pissed. that IS sonic. its his face, his body, his voice - ignoring the completely different tone used, one shadows never heard him use, one that barely sounds like him at all - so why is who is clearly sonic acting like they aren't?

they badger tails about it later, who gives them a straight answer they refuse. they interrogate knuckles, who tells them the massive history of DID in his tribe, which shadow completely ignores. annoyed (confused) tired (desperate) they go to amy, who tells them that - well, when sonic was a kid, he wasnt safe, so his brain split and made new parts of him that could help make him safe. now that he is safe, though, his brain still makes new parts, for any reason it wants - or thinks it needs to.

despite how clear these answers were, shadow wouldnt accept a single one of them.

when shadow met him, he was all of these things. he still is. he always will be. he doesn't change. he doesn't grow.

amy grew two feet taller and has a part-time job, tails grew three feet and looks like an entirely new person. knuckles adopts a new fashion style every month.

sonic doesn't change. he has new clothes, but they're the same style he's had them in since they first met. he has a new cane, but that's just an accessory, it's nothing unique, it doesn't mean anything.

he's a superhero wannabee, a one-trick pony, the same phrase repeated over and over and over again.

maria used to tell shadow she saw monsters. not just the regular ones under the bed or in the closet, but standing in the hallway and staring at her, whispering gibberish nonsense words until she ran away, trying not to cry.

sonic told him that it has schizophrenia, apparently. some kinda mental disorder 'categorized by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinkin' and behavior, and flat or inappropriate affect'.

he laughed. maybe a little maniacally.

'how's that for flat?'

shadow said it absolutely was inappropriate. sonic challenged him to a race. shadow told him only if you're prepared to lose, and the two fought for hours.

they did this constantly. at least once a week. 'enjoying' each other's presence, battling their way to the top.

this routine has been changed. shattered. because one day, sonic just wasn't home.

he could grow. he could change.

he could leave

but, half a week later, he comes back, running up from behind shadow as he takes a cruise on the dark rider, scaring the shit out of him by nearly running backwards into a building

it says it heard about that race he wanted. shadow tells him the offer's off. not taking no for an answer, it says it invites him to a race.

he accepts.

recently i watched great video about Franziska by @musashi and whole 2 hours i was like "YES YES SOMEBODY TALKED ABOUT IT THEY SAID EXACTLY WHAT I TRYING TO EXPLAIN TO ALL MY FRIENDS FOR THIS YEAR Y E S"

and well i think it's my turn to talk about Manfred. because i like this moron. before you ask me wtf let me explain: miles made unforgivable, stupid, aggressive and childish stuff. nobody can grew up in awful condition and become clearly good person. i like him because of his ambiguity. all fandom likes him. but i don't understand why everyone hate Manfred so easy

of course we don't know enough about him, his past, his relationship with family (i mean wife, for example). we only have different headcanons about how he raised miles and 'ziska. but.. it's strange for me why everyone accept so fast that "he is a villain, he is murderer, he must die, forget about him"

first of all, he is prosecutor, lawyer. probably hereditary. me too (seriously), and I saw mean, authoritative people, who can't communicate with their family well, but.. they still love them. you know, all that stuff about justice will settle in your soul forever, when you see courtroom, when you talk with other lawyers (your parents colleagues) from early childhood. you will never forget it, it's part of your life from the beginning. you can be mean, you can make awful mistakes, but you will remember. and probably your parents will press you with all this perfectionism, aesthetic, study and lawyer dynasty stuff. same as Manfred has been pressed, same as he pressed his children later

of course Manfred worked for victory, not only for justice. but i can't believe he did it because he e v i l. maybe he is just like miles in his youngest carrier because of demanding teacher and loathing to criminals? that's why he thought his children same stuff. he was just.. doing his duties. prosecutor must blame someone. somebody must get punished. death, especially violent, is always tragedy. relatives of victim are waiting for explanation, for punishment. it's so painful

next thing: Manfred is old. and he has toddler, and this toddler has noone exept Manfred, her father. i agree that Manfred could take miles because "ah look at me i adopted my rival's boy cause i'm SO generous and obviously NOT guilty ", but how about more reasons? another one child is always lots of work: money, school, adoption documents, this child also has a dog, so it's headache about vet, passport for transportation it to Germany, then dirt and maybe bitten furniture, food for both of them and more, more, more. we can see in anime, that Manfred allowed to take dog too. and by the way, he agreed to raise miles as prosecutor (he didn't force him), he helped him. quite possibly he gave him great education. Manfred understood, that Franziska need someone, who can protect and support her when he leaves her. he also can write it in testament

and how about AAI flashback? Manfred was ready to stay with miles during his first court. he discussed with him details before the beginning. he argued with detective to allow miles and 'ziska get to crime scene. he appointed them to investigate (no one of them asked about it directly, they were shocked and tried their best)

I feel like Khun would take you to a fancy restaurant on the first date, but he'd much rather have a movie night and cuddle with you.

If you want to go to a restaurant he'll take you to one of the best in the tower. Ya know, the kind that serves fresh seafood. he'll make sure it has good reviews and might even have someone go to see if it's as good as people say it is.

If you go with the movie night though, it's a different story.

He will make sure to have all of your favorite snacks and drinks. He'll have candy and basically anything else you could possibly want.

He definitely wants to pick the movie, but he'll let you pick if you want to.

I can see him enjoying psychological horror, but getting annoyed at the same time because he's already figured out what's going to happen within the first five minutes.

He doesn't mind almost whatever genre you want. I don't see him as being one for romance or comedy, but if it's what you want to watch, he's fine with it.

he would absolutely love it if you were to get scared during a horror movie and cling to him. I don't think he'd be the kind to jump or show that he's scared. The only way you could tell if he's actually scared is the way his eyes widen a bit at the jump-scares.

You and Khun are curled up with each other, under a fluffy blanket, covered in crumbs from all the sugary treats he brought you. Your legs draped over his lap as he leaned close to you and held the large plate of snacks on top of your covered thighs. the scream from the movie echoes through the living room while the two of you watch intently. You shiver a little as the suspense picks up to which he chuckles and rubs you back a bit, throwing a few smart mouthed comments your way as you watch.

Baam

Baam enjoys small picnic dates.

He'll definitely cook for you and he'll try to make whatever you want. He picks out the best spots he can find and you bet he'll lay down the red plaid blanket that he sees at all the picnics in the movie.

This cinnamon roll just wants you to be happy. He'll defiantly take you on whatever date you want, but his first choice will usually be a picnic.

If you let him, he'll probably cling to you the entire time(not me adding this because I love clingy and needy people).

You'll be sitting side by side with his leg draped over your lap and when he's done eating he'll probably rest his head in your lap, not caring if you're still eating or getting crumbs on him.

He most definitely enjoys peaceful silence, as long as you're okay with it, he'll space out, head on your lap, just staring at the clouds.

Wants to stay long enough to watch the sunset with you, but he probably gets tired of it's summer timer when the sun takes longer to set.

The picnic blanket becomes a regular blanket in the fall though, poor baby gets cold easily and even if it means sitting on leaves, sticks, and risking being a bug hiking trail, you let him do it anyway without complaint.

You and bam rest there, the food mostly gone as you watch the sunset from the hill you've chosen as your spot. The orange fading to a yellow and finally out to blue after a small ring of green. He looks up at you, moving his head on your lap as you run your fingers through his hair. The moment you look down, you're met with his tired little smile, the light shifting through his lashes to reflect in his half closed amber eyes, soft like a fire on a snowy night, a picture you want engraved in your mind till the end of your forever.

Hansung Yu

Tell me this man isn't doing a coffee date? Even better if he goes to one of those tea ceremonies only to mix in instant coffee when no one is looking.

He would probably choose the best seat in a shop, a nice quiet one by a window.

It's mostly likely mid day or a little later though he'd take you at 8 like a dinner date, but caffeine at that hour might just kill you though, he can handle it.

Will order for you if you don't know what you want, assures you you'll like it.

Might just fall in love even more if you take your coffee black, but if you take it light, he'll think it's cute and probably say some things about how you can't handle straight coffee...he's right.

Expect him to pull that "wiping drink or food off your face" move like he's in some sort of romance k-drama, might even lick it off.

Will say something surprising, or spicy depending on how far along you are, just to get a reaction out of you.

As you play footsies with Hansung under the table, he sips on his coffee like nothing is happening. You sigh a bit as you accept your loss as you feel a bruise forming on your shin. You close your eyes to take and savor this sip of sweet, sweet coff- "cockroaches would eat you alive if you couldn't do anything about it."

You appetite for coffee is immediately gone as you slam the cup down and cough a bit on what you had in your mouth as he chuckles a bit.

save for the dual destinies dlc case, i’ve finished my first play through of the mainline ace attorney games. incredibly solid series. i have a draft with my thoughts on each case in the aj trilogy + game ratings. dunno if i’d wanna post it though, it’s kinda long.

so instead, i’ll post some misc thoughts about phoenix and edgeworth portrayals across mainline/aai + my personal favorite interpretations of them by the writing team!

spoilers for AA mainline and AAI duology

by far, my favorite phoenix portrayal is og trilogy phoenix. the way he interacts with his environment and the people around him is very authentic, albeit rude as hell (which, in hindsight, is even more authentic for phoenix, so…). saw someone’s tumblr post mention that phoenix is such a “straight guy” which…yeah LMAO. real to life accuracy, so much so it’s infuriating. i think what i’ve played of dd’s dlc case captures what i wanted to see from post-trilogy phoenix in that he’s still an asshole and comically stupid, but not actually stupid, if ykwim. something i disliked abt the rest of aa5 and aa6 is how the writing team watered his character down to the following two oversimplifications: “phoenix only wins cases bc he bluffs!” and “uhh...what evidence does phoenix present now?”

don’t mistake a silly man for a stupid man. mia calls phoenix a genius in the og trilogy. phoenix dives in head first but he’s meticulous when it comes to drawing out the truth. most of all, he doesn’t outwardly show how frazzled he is (see that one drew misham quote about phoenix quietly watching the court as he’s accused of forging evidence), even if he feels that way. i get the colorful usage of expressions is for comedic effect but it just makes him look like he doesn’t know wtf he’s doing, and that’s a disservice to his character. yes, he bluffs, but he isn’t clueless. anyway, i’m excited to replay the first trilogy now that i “know” second trilogy phoenix. that might also just be my way of saying “give me back MY phoenix”, bc the last time i’m (mostly) on board w his portrayal is in aa4, and even then i didn’t like the dialogue in his forged evidence trial.

*though, as of writing this, i’ve seen some good arguments abt his forged evidence trial dialogue that make me think ok maybe it was actually pretty accurate. let’s see wht i think on replay

on the other hand, my favorite edgeworth—at least in principle—is post-apollo justice edgeworth. in many ways, i think how he’s portrayed at 35 is how he would’ve been had dl-6 not occurred, barring his career choice. still a bit pompous, still fairly mean (at least on the surface, we all know he cares more than he lets on) and perhaps a bit uptight, but self-assured and just. the writing team makes a point to show that edgeworth doesn’t care about prestige or fancy titles. that feels like him in a way post-first trilogy edgeworth doesn’t. this particular point was fleshed out in aa1 and rfta, tho, so idk if i can give yamazaki credit for it.

there are some things that will always bother me abt post-first trilogy edgeworth (the problems are present in the aai duology as well) where the writing team shoves him into a box teeming with boring tropes for his character archetype.

edgeworth is fine w pictures in the first trilogy, but comes to hate them in the aai duology.

ik it’s small but honestly what was the reason? what justification is there for this outside of wanting to fit edgeworth into a “cold character” stereotype?

bridge to the turnabout and turnabout ablaze are only about a month apart. i’m not buying into the sudden aversion to picture taking, regardless how minute a criticism it is. in any case, i feel like what i’m trying to say comes through w these screenshots: yamazaki’s edgeworth is always just a little off.

i am forgetting where i saw the post and i have too many liked posts to scroll thru to find it again but i saw a reblog?? tumblr post?? abt yamazaki and takumi’s diff approaches to edgeworth, where takumi says edgeworth listens to trot while yamazaki thinks he’d listen to classical music, and if that doesn’t drive the point home, idk wht will.

why then, did i enjoy post-aj edgeworth most? short answer is i’m taking liberties w his development and its implications. while i never completely buy into post-aa3 edgeworth, i can digest and get behind most of him when i’m not nitpicking, unlike w post-aj phoenix. does edgeworth feel a little uninspired and one- as opposed to three-dimensional? yeah, but his core is so strong i can overlook it. i’ll miss seeing a developed edgeworth when replaying the trilogy. him at 35 makes me feel warm inside.

anyway, i didn’t intend to start hating when i made this post bc i ultimately still believe the second trilogy was pretty good, if not overly ambitious with it's storytelling. maybe i'll post that AJ trilogy review.

overall, tho, t&t and aai2 were my favorite games to come out of the franchise. i’m going to do that slow replay of the first trilogy, aai duology, and aj:aa before making final judgments.

Everything at work got on your nerves today no matter what. The ticking of the clock, people having too loud of a keyboard so all you heard was typing all around you, accidentally knocking over a cup of water on your desk.

Everything was just too much.

As soon as you opened your door you threw your bag on the kitchen counter and walked to the bathroom to take a shower.

Accidentally hitting the corner of the table, just perfectly at your hip you let out a curse but also a small whine.

“Ugh, whatever.” You mumble as you pleasure yourself on the tables corner.

After a day like today you need something to distract yourself.

Once you took your shower you put on some comfortable clothes and made dinner.

“I am.” He says, you can tell his eyes glance down at your chest but quickly makes their way back up to your face. “Heres your drink sir.” The bartender slid his drink across the counter to him.

Your mind and mouth fight with each other, hes about to leave say something but dont say something stupid.

“Do you want to have sex?” You blurt out. Shit. Maybe you have drank too much too soon.

Your mouth won the fight with your brain.

The man froze, drink halfway to his mouth just staring at? The wall? The floor? You?

“I-i-i-i’m sorry. I think i’ve had too much to drink.” You say extremely embarrassed, you know your cheeks are flushed you can feel it.

The man downs his drink and asks for another. Still not answering your question but maybe its better if he doesn’t answer it.

Actually its probably for the best he doesn’t answer it.

When he gets his new drink he gives you a nod and walks away quickly.

You watch as he joins a group of people, three men and three women. Probably other firefighters and he’s probably telling them what just happened.

You quickly get up an rush to the bathroom, you can feel eyes on you and its making you feel worse than you already do.

As you wash your hands taking a look at yourself in the mirror you cant help but think of how much of mess you are right now.

In life and right now.

You touch up your make up before leaving the bathroom, with still a little bit of hope still left in you you’re not ready to give up the goal of the night just yet.

Even though its probably best if you just go home and pleasure yourself after asking a man, a freaking firefighter, to have sex with you when he hadn’t even had a drink yet.

As you open the bathroom door while putting your lipstick back in your purse you bump into a soft wall.

“Sorry” you apologize without looking at the said wall.

When your alcohol filled brain processes what just happened you realize walls aren’t soft. You turn around and see the man from the bar standing there.

“Oh. Its you.” You say, crap. “Sorry that sounded mean. You probably think i-” you begin to go on about something, you dont even know but was cut off when the man closed the distance between you all and kissed you.

“Whats your name?” You break away to ask. “Eddie.” He replies quickly as he pushes you back against the wall.

His mouth adventuring yours as his hands slide up your side.

“Lets go to my place its just down the street.” You say grabbing his hand before it reaches its destination.

You grab his hand and drag him out of the bar behind you. You hear someone yell “get it Eddie!” Assuming it was one of the other firefighters he was with.

As the two of you awkwardly waited for the elevator you could feel yourself already wet and in need of this man inside you.

“How long does this elevator take?” Eddie asked, hes half tempted to pick you up over his shoulder and carry you up the stairs.

“Usually not this long.” You answer noticing it is taking longer than usual. “What floor do you live on?” He asks.

“Third-ah!” You let out when he all of a sudden lifts you up with ease over his shoulder and opens the door to stairs taking two at a time.

Hes a firefighter he does this all the time.

When he opened the door you heard the ding of the elevator but this, this was hot.

When the door opens he turns around cautious not to bump you into the wall. He shuts the door with his foot.

“Found it!” Eddies says when he finds your bedroom. He makes it there in three big steps and kicks the door shut as he lays you on the bed.

You shimmy your way up on the bed as Eddie takes off his shirt. Your eyes glued to his broad shoulders, his strong chest, his abs, oh god his abs.

“You’re so…. Strong.” You say as he places each hand on the bed next to you.

“And you’re beautiful sweetheart.” His voice his deep and gentle. A soft hand travels up your side as his mouth devours yours.

Eddies hand slips underneath your dress as he lifts it up off over you revealing your body to him.

He looks at your breasts as they lay perfectly plump like a pillow, the curves of your hips and the small pump of your belly.

This OS was something I visualized as I was returning home and listening to the song, and thought to write it as a vignette, essentially. They are SatyabhamaShyam in the modern world, and if you want, I can make this a series of OS'.

Maadhavi was sweating in the sultry heat of the Sun. She was in an auto, exasperated at the slow moving traffic. She was on her way back home after a grueling dance class, lasting about three hours. She needed a long shower, despite having taken a quick one at dance class and changing into brand new clothes. The Sun made it even harder, as she gently wiped the sweat away from her neck. She fiddled with her phone, choosing a random romantic song, sighing softly. Every song reminded her of her Krishna, as always.

As the song she was listening to neared its end, she peered out of the auto, her eyes landing on the car next to her. Her breath caught in her throat when her eyes met dark chocolate brown ones, which also widened the smallest amount in response to her. She could feel her heart flutter in her chest, and a shiver run down her spine. Those eyes, she knew those eyes.

Aankhon mein teri, ajab si ajab si adaayein hai

Indeed there was something so stunningly graceful about his eyes, about his gaze. It was all penetrating, yet very gentle and questioning, as if needing her acceptance to just gaze. She blushed at the hope in his eyes, and prayed her answer got translated to him.

Maadhavi wondered what he was thinking, and when she got so shameless with staring at a guy. That thought alone pulled her back and she looked down shyly, though her eyes sprung back to the man in passenger seat, whose eyes had not moved an inch from her, clearly.

While it was not night, the day was heading there. Dusk was fast approaching, and this was when Shyam had spotted the young woman in the auto. He had first glanced at her because he could feel the familiarity. But when she too turned to look at him, as if in a synchronized set of events, Shyam had frozen. Those eyes were filled with warmth, forgiveness and acceptance, and they reminded him of the eyes which lived in his dreams and memories. He could not even move his eyes, nor did he want to.

To him, she was the one who would be wanted by people even without her knowledge, her radiance told him as much. But here she was, in the vehicle next to his. He ignored his smirking elder brother, and just allowed his hidden romantic to take over, observing every little action of hers.

His heart was thrumming with a melodious sound created by the contact of their eyes, Shyam felt. He could not bear to look away. He smiled softly when she did, her round cheeks red, a blush that spread at least up to her neck. Her eyes again peered at him, causing his heart to now sing happily. He tried to silence it, but he was used to accepting life as it happened, so he settled, allowing the course of Destiny to dictate the happenings.

He had become the light that shone magnificently as the sun approached the West. Maadhavi could not believe she was still caught in traffic, and still gazing at the same man. His eyes felt like her Krishna's, his smile too felt familiar, and the gentle warmth he spread touched her very soul, making her smile in response, a radiant smile at the joy his warmth spread within.

Shyam knew that not even the romance of the moonlight could touch the splendid nature of the light her heart radiated. The purity of her showed on her beautiful face, which had a gentle yet obvious jawline, framing a round face like the moon, lotus petal eyes, red lips, and skin that seemed to be both golden and dusky at the same time. His eyes though were drawn repeatedly to her light coloured orbs, which reflected the Sun to him. Yet the depth in them felt like his own Soul.

Maadhavi and Shyam both jerked when they realized the traffic had started moving. It felt as if the traffic had stopped miraculously so that they could see each other, and now that it had happened, there was sudden movement. But she was not ready to let go. Maadhavi wanted to drown herself in his eyes, and she prayed under her breath, "Krishna, may we unite soon."

Shyam, on the other hand, was feeling his heart beat a little off track, as if not wanting to separate and yet having to. He gazed at her, trying to take her in to the maximum he could, as both the vehicles started to speed. He knew they would meet again soon, he just knew. Till then, he could wait.

"Mahadeva, may my meeting her again happen soon."

The two hearts, which had recognized each other that day, were parted by the movement of life and time; but both souls, which had been exchanged by the medium of two pairs of eyes, awaited eagerly for the day where they could converse freely once more.

This is probably the first song fic I have written entirely, and that I posted as well. It has a special place in my heart.

I saw in an interview that the GK2 writer did consider writing about Manfred, Gant and Blaise but he thought it wouldn't be a fun game to play. If that game WAS made, what do you think it would be like in terms of story and gameplay?

I'm obviously not sure how exactly *Capcom* would make this game, but I can write you an outline of a version of it that I at least wouldn't be disappointed by!

Hope everything makes sense, I'm writing this at 4 am. Under a cut because wow did this get Long.

There'd be AAI-style gameplay, with the usual interrogations and the logic mechanic. That one would be modified in such a way that you're not only piecing facts and events together, but uncovering people's emotional weak spots. Once you find them, they're added to the organizer and you can object with them during interrogations to pressure characters into saying what you need them to say to win the case. Also, outside of interrogations, Gant can use Perceive.

Unlike regular AAI, this one would include actual trial segments, at least in the final case. Now, I'm pretty sure the reason regular AAI does *not* do this is because it's simply hard to incorporate cool twists if you're playing as the prosecutor. As the defense, if the prosecution says the case happened like this and you prove it happened differently, that's fun and exciting! But if you're the one saying it happened like this, and then you just ... prove exactly that ... yeah. That would feel kind of flat. So the way that this would work is similar to the last day of RftA, where Phoenix has at least a rough plan in mind to prove Gant did it from the beginning, but we the audience aren't in on it and watch him unravel it testimony by testimony. Basically the tension would be in the "how" rather than the "what".

On to the story. I know the common idea for a game like this is that Manfred would be the main character, but with what we canonically know about him - a perfect record and nothing ever really going wrong before Greg came along - it would be hard to write meaningful conflict for him, external or internal, and I feel like a game as dark as this one would have to be in order to do its cast justice wouldn't work without plenty of both.

So: except for the segments in court, Gant is the protagonist. A detective who joined the force out of idealism, but who's growing increasingly frustrated and disappointed in the law because of how little justice he feels he actually gets to create, between having to let obviously guilty culprits walk free because some loophole makes the evidence proving their guilt illegal and feeling like he's forced to uphold the letter rather than the spirit of the law more often than not. Insert sad backstory of Blaise (a minor antagonist/rival character in this game) destroying his faith in prosecutors by accepting bribes by a corrupt politician Gant risked his life to apprehend and losing the trial on purpose, thereby also ruining any chance of them being held accountable for their crimes in the future because of double jeopardy.

Manfred fills the sidekick role, but as more of a mentor character than an assistant, showing Gant how to manipulate people, evidence, and the law itself to get the results you want. Although Gant knows Manfred's obsession with perfection makes him dangerous, he's also the only prosecutor he still feels fully comfortable working with, because he's the only one he knows for sure will never betray him like Blaise did and lose on purpose, and Gant reasons that as long as he makes sure they only ever convict people who are actually guilty, it's morally okay for him to use Manfred and his methods as a "weapon" to arrive at that goal. His trust in Manfred - or rather his trust in himself to keep Manfred under control somewhat - gets shaken throughout the game, though; if Manfred can forge evidence to fool the court, he could also manipulate evidence to fool Gant. Can he really be sure he's only arresting the right people?

Manfred also gets to be the viewpoint character for a mostly comedic filler case with incredibly low stakes blown incredibly out of proportion because of how big a threat even small things pose to his perfection.

Blaise, as said before, is a minor antagonist/rival who keeps impeding their investigations and generally making their lives harder (think Verity and Eustace pre-AAI2-4) Every once in a while he's actually useful, providing vital information, but always at a cost. Maybe his and Gant's shared backstory is revealed in a flashback case.

Remember what I said earlier, about Gant worrying about Manfred deceiving him? At around the 75% mark of the game, Gant finds out this has happened at least once, whether by Manfred deliberately framing an innocent person or by going so far with his methods that the resulting injustice completely outweighed the justice of the guilty verdict. With this knowledge, every single other case they worked together now seems suspicious too. Gant confronts him. They end up beating the hell out of each other, and Gant has his Dark Night of the Soul moment where he despairs over the fact that he became a detective to fight for justice, but is unable to stop injustice when it happens right in front of him. The next day he decides to report Manfred to the PIC, even at the cost of incriminating himself by confessing to all the ways they broke the law together, but when he arrives at the building, Manfred is there, waiting for him with a deal: he knows how to get around double jeopardy, and he'll help Gant finally bring the politician Blaise let walk free to justice if he agrees to tell no-one what he knows.

Gant is conflicted at first, but agrees eventually, and they get to work. Now - if this game was actually made, they would of course base this on Japanese law, and I don't know much about that. I've read that in the US, at least, double jeopardy does not apply if it's proven the judge accepted bribes from the defendant to pronounce them not guilty, because then the defendant was never "in jeopardy" in the first place. So, at least in this outline, that's what Gant and Manfred are doing now: framing the judge from back then for taking bribes. Gant feels conflicted again - this is his first time deliberately framing an innocent, but Manfred convinces him that one innocent man going to prison will be worth the justice the politician's victims were denied for so long. (Manfred doesn't care about the justice aspect too much, of course - he just knows it'll convince Gant to stick to the deal).

They succeed, the case is retried. Blaise ramps up his efforts to stop them, worried about his positive public image suffering for losing a case with such a high-profile suspect if they're found guilty now. He fails, of course - Gant and Manfred win, the politician's original victims come up to thank them, and Gant thinks to himself that if the price of fighting the world's many unnecessary evils is employing some necessary evils in turn, it's one he's willing to pay after all. There's some RftA foreshadowing in the end credits with Gant saying to himself that since Blaise has aspirations of becoming Chief Prosecutor one day, he'll need to find a way to control the Prosecutor's Office somehow to ensure they act according to *his* idea of justice, not Blaise's.
