I think this is the last of my Whumperless stuff! This was super fun!

Fully unconscious / Force feeding / “It's just me, go back to sleep.”

Mariano was heavy, not even trying to be anything but dead weight in Bastian's arms. He'd been hit by some sleep spell when the group they were traveling with had been ambushed. It was almost ridiculous--the Kingslayer was sent down for the count at the very start of the fight, dead to the world in under a second.

Bastian had almost thought he'd really, actually died.

He wasn't dead, though. The group's healer had a look at him, and figured out that it was just a strong bit of magic. He'd be fine, it was just a matter of it wearing off.

They'd settled in to camp for the night, and Bastian didn't argue when the others told him to just sit with Mariano by the fire and tend to dinner. It almost surprised Bastian how much he didn't want to put Mariano down. It just wouldn't have felt right to simply put him to bed and walk off.

It would've felt like abandoning him, somehow.

Maybe it was how the complete, forced relaxation took years off his face. He always looked young, but without stress and worry to draw his brow and tense his jaw, he looked especially so. His lashes kissed his cheeks, and his lips weren't even pulled into the almost-frown that made people so nervous.

Maybe it was because not even the roar of battle had been able to rouse Mariano. He hadn't so much as twitched or mumbled since he'd gone down. Mariano Ortiz wasn't exactly a restless sleeper, but he would still respond. He'd shift in his sleep now and then, cuddle closer, frown if Bastian moved away for any reason, or mutter some nonsense in that serious tone he took when he thought a decision was important.

Right then, he was just still. His chest rose and fell slowly, and he was still warm. For all intents and purposes, this was just a very deep sleep.

But it still felt wrong to treat it so lightly. Mariano was completely defenseless. He was vulnerable in a way that Bastian hadn't really ever seen before--there would be no blaze of sun-bright magic if you stood over him. He probably wouldn't even wake up if someone tried to drown him.

A cold breeze whispered past, rustling the leaves and drawing goosebumps up on Mariano's arms, but he didn't draw in on himself. He didn't try to curl in closer. Bastian shifted closer to the fire, pulling his traveling cloak in closer to properly cover Mariano's arms. He stirred the bubbling soup, and listened to their companions' chatter as they settled in for dinner, and helped Mariano stretch out a little more so that he was properly draped across his lap, cradled in one of Bastian's arms.

This way, even if he happened to be dreaming of whatever clawed at him in the dark and just couldn't wake up to stop it, it might not be quite as scary.

Bastian didn't know when he'd started to remember how exactly Mariano was haunted at night. He didn't know when he'd figured out that holding Mariano and letting him bury his face into Bastian's shoulder was what helped his nightmares the most. He hoped he'd figured it out a while ago.

It didn't really matter. What mattered was that he knew how Mariano put his hair up every night. He knew how Mariano liked his bindings to be folded. He knew which shirt of his that Mariano liked to sleep in after particularly trying days. And he knew how to arrange him in their blankets to ensure that if he woke up in the middle of the night, he wouldn't panic.

With his mage held close and the camp readied for night, the moon rose high above them. Everyone drifted off one by one, low conversation fading away as they did. With the too-sweet stink of the sleeping spell still thick in Mariano's hair where Bastian had buried his face, Bastian slowly relaxed, taken by a sleep far gentler and lighter.
