Consumerism & Witchcraft
Written by Marimo (he/they)🌿
Tumblr media
I’ve seen a turn for the better in some witchy spaces regarding consumerism in the past few years, but overall it still tends to be an issue for us as a community. I’ve decided to try and breakdown the pitfalls I’ve noticed in my own journey, in the hopes that it will inspire and assist others. I’ve also provided alternatives and ideas on how to make small changes in our practice to help us better protect the Earth, stick it to the failing system and still acquire our bits and bobs we love so dearly.
As always, I am no authority on any subject nor am I perfect—but we’re all learning as we go, so let’s dive right in 🌿
A Preface
There are some things that should be made entirely clear before we begin:
You are not a bad person for wanting an aesthetic
You are not a bad person for unknowingly falling into pitfalls. Only if you continue to purposefully do so after knowing better
You are not a bad person for consuming content/objects or for not always making the most sustainable decisions. At the end of the day, we can only control our small part of environmental impact, while the rest is left up to the major corporations that make more pollution than any of us ever will
You are only human. Show yourself some grace and understanding that the internet so lacks.
My Experience in Consumerist Hell
I have fallen victim many times to consumerism in witchcraft. Starting my journey at the ripe age of about ten years old and heavily in the broom closet, I was quickly drawn in by the shiny rocks, the brand new candles and scents, the promise of new tarot decks and pendulums and other fancy, shiny new equipment. I was consuming an online aesthetic along with my ideals, and it distracted me from starting my journey by learning well.
I began to spend my birthday and holiday money on the aesthetic of things. While, granted, I still did buy a few literary resources now and again from my local secondhand bookstore—I was stubbornly ignoring the sage advice to learn and understand first before diving in headfirst.
I purchased statues, crystals, too many tarot decks to use. I purchased osteomancy bones I later returned to the earth, for I had not done enough research to know that that animal was mine to practice with. I had a tankard full of incense sticks, and even a growing pile of books that would not be read. While I liked to consider myself crafty with my homemade Maypole and various hand-bound Grimoires, something was becoming apparent: this was all a distraction.
The aesthetic I was partaking in was providing me with a false sense of progress and practicality.
When I’d go to do a tarot reading, I’d become far too overwhelmed with choosing a deck to read in the first place. When making an offering to a deity, I’d feel pressured to also bolster the altars of all the other deities I’d set up, and with my wide pool, the connections felt muddy. Often times I’d be off-put on a project or spell because I knew I needed to film it and it needed to look nice.
In the long term, I don’t have many of these items today. I’ve sold and donated a vast breadth of them. Feeling overwhelmed costed me a few years retreat from my craft to recuperate. However, what has stuck with me is the knowledge I picked up along the way.
So, What’s the Issue? TL;DR
I’ve noticed a few issues here in making these mistakes myself.
Consumerism absolutely distracts you from learning and your craft
Overconsumption leads to environmental damage. If everyone hoarded supplies, there would not be enough to go around. And with what gets thrown away every year…it paints an ugly wound on the Earth
We damage our learning abilities by not allowing ourselves to be anything less than perfect
The need for aesthetic creates barriers to entry within the community and creates a divide of haves and have-nots
You won’t be able to truly follow your individual path if you are only consuming and not creating for yourself
Consumerist culture promotes appropriation. Metaphysical stores carry items from closed practices (such as white sage and palo santo, or coyote bones) because someone is buying them. Don’t be that person, and find alternatives relating to your own culture instead
Consumerism can influence your spiritual decisions based upon monetary inclinations (where some may sacrifice a quality ingredient over a higher quantity of a lower quality ingredient)
So, what can we do?
Firstly, I want to clarify that I am not against collecting, nor am I against maximalism or the beautiful visual aesthetic we carry as a community.
I am an artist a very visual person and understand the longing for a beautiful home and workspace. However, this aesthetic shouldn’t come at the cost of irresponsibly harming the Earth or another community.
Thus, I’ve compiled a list of small things that I will be incorporating into my practice to make it more mindful and sustainable. I hope that you’ll join me in a few of them.
Minimize Supplies. While I used to have a huge selection of stationary for my Grimoire, I now limit myself to a simple pencil and watercolor set if I’m feeling artistic. This helps me actually use my Grimoire for study, rather than to keep perfect. It’s also friendlier on my wallet!
Thrift Supplies. There are plenty of perfectly good items that get donated daily. You can get high-quality candles and holders, old crystal bowls for altar offerings, spare crafting supplies, fabric for alter cloths and even clothing if you so wish—all for a fraction of the cost new and while saving the planet just a little bit more. Hell, you can sometimes even find good silver!
Share Supplies with your Community. You can create a sort of barter system with other witches in your area. Perhaps you create a sigil for them, and they provide you with a candle spell. Play to your strengths and grow together!
Look for Creative Outlets. Do you really need to go buy an altar statue that’s been mass-produced? Or can you give your deity the personal gift of a drawing, painting or even hand-modeled or hand-carved rendition? This will also deepen your connection to your craft and your magic, and make it more meaningful and stronger. If you really like something, though, go for it!
If you aren’t the artistic sort, consider supporting an artist before going to a large company. While I haven’t purchased from them myself, Blagowood on Etsy has beautiful deity statues carved from wood by their small team in Ukraine for a comparable cost to the standard mass produced metal statues. I consider this extra labor of love going into these pieces and those of similar small companies to be much better energy for my practice. I myself may put out some art prints and other handmade supplies in the future, but I will likely spread them around my community first.
Try Secondhand Books. While not available in every area and further still not as available for witchcraft and occult books, you may strike luck! Not only are secondhand books less expensive, but you’ll be supporting a local business. That’s not to say you can’t buy firsthand books, but some searching around may be beneficial to the earth and to your wallet in the long run.
Be mindful of where you source supplies and decor. If you are a fan of taxidermy decor, make sure that you source cruelty free. Bats can practically never be sourced without cruelty, so if a shop carries them, I’d be mindful of their other specimens. The same goes for if a shop decides to forgo a culture’s wishes and carry supplies sacred to them, such as white sage or dreamcatchers. Supporting folks who turn a profit off of others’ suffering is not something many would wish to include energetically in their craft.
Search the Wild for Tools. Find sticks, flowers and other plants out in the forest. Learn how to rockhound in your area for crystals. Your craft will be more powerful the more connected it is to the land you are surrounded by. Be sure to reference guides for safety and legality!
Get Creative with Purposes. If you are having difficulty finding exactly what you need by thrifting or searching, make another tool multipurpose if it would do the job good enough. Find supplies that are easy to source and work as substitutes for other ingredients (ex. Quartz as a stand in for other stones)
Spend more time Doing. Go out into the woods (safely) and advance your connection to the earth instead of worrying over the perfect item for your collection. Your craft will benefit
At the end of the day, all of this is your decision. Take what you like, and leave what you don’t. Even if we don’t agree, I thank you for your time and open mind. I will continue updating about how I incorporate these steps, and I will also hopefully post more on witchy crafting in the future.
I wish you well, and hope you’ll decide to follow along on our journey!

🌸 Building Your Ideal Wardrobe
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🌸 Dressing well is not just about fashion or looks. Dressing well helps us define our identity. It is a way to control the narrative of perception. Dressing well is an energy.
However, many struggle to dress well.
🌸 This is because of a few reasons:
- They struggle to buy coordinating pieces.
- They buy into microtrends.
- They don't have enough elevated basics.
- Or they have too many basics and not enough statement pieces.
- Or they have way too many clothes.
🌸 Here's how you can revamp your wardrobe!
🌸 1) Start off by defining your style. Narrow down your style into a few adjectives.
look on Pinterest, social media, and other online sources for inspiration.
Save outfit photos that inspire you and are practical for your everyday wear.
Pinpoint all the similarities in the photos.
Are there alot of neutrals?
Are most of the outfits built on a certain style of jeans?
Do most of the outfits have some statement piece?
🌸 2) Go shopping. You don't have to break the bank if you start accumulating your new wardrobe slowly and strategically. Look into thrift shops, online sales, clearances in physical stores, etc.
Buy quality clothes!
It is better to have good quality fabrics than have tons of clothes made of cheap fabrics.
At the very least look for cotton blends.
Ditch the polyester blends! They overheat the body and do not give off a refined finish.
Collect pieces you see most commonly repeated in your inspo photos.
Ex: a specific style of jeans, cardigans, specific style of tops, etc.
🌸 3) Choose a color palette & versatile pieces!
You do not have to opt for the dull millennial grays or the subdued beiges that are trending.
Keep your basics neutral and buy statement pieces or layering pieces in your favorite colors!
For ex: a white frilly top can be paired with a pink cardigan or a sage green vest. You can use blue denim jeans for the pink outfit and black jeans for the green outfit.
You have two completely different outfits rotating the same top!
Be creative and resourceful!
🌸 4) Get rid of the clutter! Donate or sell the clothes you don't find yourself reaching for.
This will give your closet a breather and give you space to add in new pieces.
🌸 5) Buy clothes that feel comfortable!
You may think a top or dress is cute even if it is a bit uncomfy. You'll convince yourself that you'll wear it anyway.
Truth is you won't. You naturally will not reach for it on a day to day basis.
Find out what cuts and fabrics work for you and stick to them!
🌸 6) Keep your wardrobe interesting by investing in unique accessories. Scarves, belts, purses, and jewlery, can totally alter an outfit.
🌸 7) Incorporate your own touch!
You can draw inspiration from many sources. But do not become a carbon copy of what you see online. Add your own touch. Add your own details.
Allow your personality to stand out!

I love plant shops. I love crystal shops. I love shops that are all about the mystical, such as witch shops. And I love shops that have handmade items like soaps, lotions, candles and so on.
What I hate is that constantly I find that I'll be looking at a shop (online or in person), and it's great. Until I find them selling palo santo. Until I find them selling white sage. Until I find them selling said white sage as a smudge stick.
Please, and I cannot emphasize this enough: Stop throwing around the term smudging. It is a sacred ritual. You are not smudging. You are smoke cleansing. Learn more about both. Smoke cleansing isn't appropriation, but smudging is.
It is disrespectful to indigenous people who have smudging as part of sacred rituals. But especially disrespectful, actually, beyond disrespectful and downright awful, is the use of Palo Santo and White Sage.
Palo Santo comes from two trees, and the process of harvesting it is in itself a sacred process to harvest the trees that involves only fallen ones, after letting them rest for years. When buying Palo Santo, almost every time it will not be in support of indigenous peoples whose culture is being exploited. Culture and environment, land. Because the over harvesting of these trees (one type is in the red zone for endangered, the other is nearing it), is harmful to the trees, and it damages and makes dryer the land that Palo Santo grows on in Latin America. It hurts people and the earth, both through culture and through environmental impacts.
In Peru and Ecuador it's illegal to cut down Palo Santo trees. However, because of the profit that corporations seek to gain because of people turning a blind eye, not doing their research, and being 'trendy' within wellness - and witch - communities, the trees are still being illegally cut down. It's likely most of what anyone encounters in store isn't of a matured tree, because the young trees often are chopped down. Another insult to the people being exploited is that the workers and the indigenous communities are also being specifically exploited with unfair wages.
There is such a thing as appreciating cultures, but just using Palo Santo generally is not the way to do it. Appreciation of a culture means knowing the history, the cultural meanings and traditions related to the plant (or anything else). It's also knowing the impact on the people's whose culture you want to appreciate. When that impact is negative, find other ways to appreciate the culture. Or find ways to ethically source something. For example, finding ethically sourced Palo Santo. Luna Sundara is an example of this. The shop works with the government's of Peru and Ecuador to legally import Palo Santo, they follow both government and sacred laws in only using wood that's been matured, and they make sure the indigenous communities and workers are receiving good care and fair wages.
I got really intensely focused on Palo Santo, but I still need to emphasize the problem with using White Sage. While it isn't currently on an endangered list, it is leading there quickly. White Sage is used in food, medicine and ritual ceremonies for some Native American tribes. White Sage is not the same as some more common sages, and it doesn't grow as much or in as many areas. The overharvesting of this sage threatens the plant and the ecosystem of the area, as well as effecting the traditions of tribes in areas around Southern California and Northwestern Mexico. I highly recommend this article. But to summarize, people use White Sage as a way to cleanse their space, but do so while disrespecting the rituals that they claim to be doing (I'm looking at you 'smudge sticks'). Native people gather from the earth in very specific ways, caring for the plants that are being harvested from and taking only small bits at a time. However, harvesters looking only at profit take from the plant with no regard for it, ripping roots out of the ground, just taking and taking. Not only is that horrific, but it isn't sustainable. White Sage, among other plants, risk endangerment and possibly extinction by the misuse and over harvesting currently happening. The burning of white sage that is popularly done today isn't done in the way Native people of California do it, either. Whole bundles are burned for the smoke because it's pretty, but Native people would burn the same bundle much, much slower. Carelessness is a good word for it.
And again, when looking at ways you might use white sage ethically, there are exceptions. Here's a site that goes into that. I will be honest, because of the level of cultural appropriation that is associated with the misuse of white sage, that mostly looks like not using it. However, when more ethically acquired (see: from Native people of Southern California + farmed not wild-sourced) and used sparingly (and not by 'smudging') there is possibilities. The best thing to do, though, is use something else.
Both Palo Santo and White Sage are (mis)used in wellness communities, meditation communities, and by witches. The idea behind the use of both of these is for cleansing, purification, and to drive away bad energy. However, using plants that are endangered or at risk of endangerment, using these plants while indigenous people beg you not to - and on top of it appropriating ceremonies that are clearly not being understood or respected - will only being bad energy into your life. Burn bundles made of lavender, or cedar, or rosemary. Make an at home essential oil spray (be mindful of the ingredients) with plants that cleanse and purify. Incense, candles. Bake, learn a new craft. Do things with good intentions. Things like these can bring you good energy, but exploiting Indigenous people and exploiting ecosystems, will not.

Smoke Cleansing
One thing you will find virtually every practitioner talk about is cleansing your space of negative energy. In fact, smoke cleansing not only clears negative energy from your house, it can also clear up your mindset. Having a calm and clear space has been linked to much more positive outlooks on life, which in turn can help your mental and physical health.
Smoke cleansing is the the act of burning incense or dried herb bundles with the intent to remove negative energy from a person or space. In nearly every culture dating back to the Ancient Egyptians, smoke cleansing has long been believed to remove negative energy, heal, protect and boost defense against disease. Smoke cleansing is not the same as smudging done amongst the Indigenous peoples or saining done amongst the Scots, as they are specific rituals and should only be practiced by those within those practices because they are CLOSED PRACTICES. A closed practice doesn’t mean only those with that background can practice, it just means you have to be initiated and accepted by that community to learn these rituals.
The most common way to smoke cleanse your space is with a sage bundle, however there are other methods as well. As I stated before, incense and dried herb bundles of any variety are effective as well. Do be careful with what you are using, as it can either be an over harvested one or simply toxic to any animals you have. Before you ask, yes. White sage is used specifically by the Indigenous peoples of America, so unless you are growing your own, DO NOT USE IT. Palo santo is not a gatekept tree, but understand that new age withcraft and consumerism is destroying the rainforest where it grows. This means the cultures that have been using palo santo for centuries are having a harder time getting it. Instead, I am going to give you some alternatives to use in your own practice so you can still practice and be respectful at the same time.
*Please be careful when burning anything.*
Some basic rules when smoke cleansing your house are be mindful not to light your incense or herb bundle near anything flammable, open your windows and be careful when waving the incense or bundle around as embers can set things on fire. I use an abalone shell to catch the ash and embers from my bundle whenever I smoke cleanse. Always have a fire extinguisher or water nearby whenever you are smoke cleansing.
(I know this seems like common sense knowledge, but as someone who has received ACTUAL firefighting training in both the civilian and military sectors, you’d be surprised how many people don’t understand the fire triangle.)
So when should you smoke cleanse your space?
This will vary from person to person so pick a day and time that works best for you, however you should aim to be cleansing your space on a regular basis. Some prefer to do it on the first of the month or around sabbats/holidays. I prefer to smoke cleanse my house around the lunar cycle (so on the new/full moon). I recommend doing it at least once a month, but you can do it as often as you feel like.
What should I use?
This is also another personal preference based on what you enjoy and can afford. Incense sticks are just one method and you can buy these online or in an actual store. They come in a variety of sizes and smells, just find the one that connects to you the best. As I mentioned before, nearly any dried herb can be used for smoke cleansing. A good alternative to white sage is common sage, rosemary or even lavender. Do not use lavender if you have pets, it is toxic to them. Don’t want to use one of those and prefer something like palo santo? Juniper and birch are good alternatives. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT ACCIDENTALLY BURNING SOMETHING THAT IS POISONOUS! I personally use common sage dipped in dragon’s blood (it’s a tree resin and has a POTENT smell to it, definitely not for those who don’t like spicy smells).
I am a firm believer in supporting small businesses, so check Etsy or your preferred website if you prefer to shop online. Just be careful to read the description of the product, some businesses will have white sage mislabeled as regular sage. Wanna actually go into a brick-and-mortar store? Check to see if there are any metaphysical shops in your area. You can also find different witchcraft groups on Facebook that will share info based on the city, town or state you live in. While I don’t use it often, I am a part of a FB group that shares different shops in various places across the state I live in so if I travel to one of those places, I know where to go.

Husband: why don't you order from [insert former-favorite metaphysical shop] anymore?
Me: because I learned about racial slurs and culture appropriation, both of which are very dominant in that store. When I contacted them regarding this, they said it's no big deal and I can just not buy those things.
Husband: what do you mean?
Me: they're a white owned store selling hoodoo/voodoo stuff, also made by a white person the hoodoo/voodoo community has called out as Not Good. They sell Indigenous items made by white people, and with zero regard for the actual people these white folks are more or less stealing from. When the Indigenous folks contacted the store, they were informed the store isn't responsible and will co tune doing business with the thieves. They use g*psy and items named that from companies that use that racial slur in their name. When they were called put on it, they said it was reclaiming of the slur, which is exactly not true ever at all. They sell white sage that was acquired harmfully by white owned companies and sold in bundles called smudge sticks. Smudging is a very specific Indigenous ceremonial practice, and the plant is sacred to them. This is appropriation and theft. They sell Buddha heads, which is downright horrifying and you can do your own research on that. Many of the books they sell were written by racists ass-backward assholes who did exactly zero research and made shit up as they went. They sell chime candles at horrifying prices when a box of 100 is less than $20. Don't get me started on the prices of all their other things.
Husband: but you loved the store.
Me: I was ignorant. Plain and simple.
Husband: so...where are you buying your supplies?
Me: from the online stores of local Indigenous peoples, the dollar store, grocery store, and small local businesses know are good, safe, and respectful. Soon, I will be growing mist of my own herbs and plants.
Husband: oh.
Me: ignorance is overpriced harmful bliss. I would rather not be part of that cycle.
Husband: so...where should I buy incense?
Me: I know a few local businesses that source things properly or make it themselves. You can check them out when you have time.
Husband: okay, cool. Thanks

primrose, azalea, lotus, poppy, dahlia, zinnia, freesia - for the flower asks.
primrose— how long does it take for you to get ready for the day what does your routine usually consist of?
every work day I wake up at 14:30, I go on my phone until about 15:00 or 15:07, then I have two packets of peaches and cream oatmeal and leave for work at 16:07. if I am not working I wake up whenever but usually at the same time ish, go on my phone until about 15:30 or 16:00, and then I get up and go to Walmart. I then go to the McDonald's and have a medium iced coffee and a six pack of nuggets and then I wander around Walmart and when I am done wandering I get my groceries which right now is three boxes of peaches and cream oatmeal, one box of shahi rajma, one loaf of white bread, and one package of sliced turkey. I get two 1L bottles of Dr Pepper if they have it (but they usually don't) and if I don't have chips at home I get some chips. if they have Digimon cards I buy one pack. then I go to Loblaws and I buy one pack of chicken gyoza, a milkshake, and one or two tempura shrimp ramen if I have only one at home. then I go home and do whatever for the rest of the day
azalea— what is the most recent song you listened to? how do you feel about it?
the last thing I listened to was an Armin van Buuren set, which is always good, but the last SONG I listened to was something off the Rise of the Beasts OST which is good but I also feel it's much too heroic in comparison with the OST from the first Transformers
lotus— what is your favorite color and in what shade? e.g. sage green, navy blue, ect.
blue but turquoise specifically
poppy— out of the four seasons, which season of the year is your favorite and why?
summer bc it's the lowest maintenance season. every other season has a whole rigamarole where I have to figure out how many clothes to put on so that I don't freeze waiting for the bus in the middle of the night. summer? a sweater is fine and if I don't need it I can leave it at work for when I do. can't do that with the pile of clothes I have to wear every winter and the day-to-night temperature drops in spring and autumn are awful
dahlia— do you like to follow current fashion trends or do you have a particular style that you prefer to stick to?
I absolutely don't follow trends. I have been wearing the same pair of black pants since I was sixteen and I have like... sixty graphic tshirts to wear with them plus an Escapade hoodie I bought like five years ago. I have 'nice' clothes but they're like. party clothes I used to get online but now I get at Simons but I don't wear them a lot bc they aren't super durable (anything with sequins and glitter isn't in particular) so I just usually wear them when I'm going somewhere all my friends are going
zinnia— would you say you think more with your head or with your heart?
head. I don't generally talk impulsively
freesia— what do you want people to remember you for? (serious or non-serious answers)
people find me memorable in general I think bc they think I'm weird which honestly is fine with me

Hello!! I'm so sorry if this isn't welcome, feel free to delete if so! I've seen you reblog a couple posts in relation to witchcraft and i have a genuine q. I thought white sage is okay to use/not closed practice if bought from native americans? If you have articles or anything countering my thought id love to read them to research this more!
(My final answer is that there's so many options that have zero chance of causing issues for the indigenous community. I feel the best course of action for me in my decolonization is to just use something else. Continue reading for further explanation as to how I got there.)
If an indigenous person wants to correct me. Please do. I'm putting my full explanation under a Read More tag that way if I need to edit my post, the edits will show up in the reblogs.
-fae
It varies from tribe to tribe and even person to person. No. One indigenous person can speak for all indigenous people in this matter. And I'm not indigenous so I can't speak for any indigenous people. So I'm just going to say what I've heard from indigenous people and how it influences me and my practice.
The use of white sage has led to a huge issue with illegally harvesting and poaching (is that the right word?) white sage in an unsustainable manner. And usually if the people doing this are caught the poached white sage is given to the local indigenous communities to use.
And indigenous communities I've seen talking about it are saying that the amount of poached white sage is more than they can use or even need. (But it's obvious they have more of a right to it than anyone).
I also think anyone that has a following shouldn't use it in a public manner as this will only further encourage the over harvesting of it. I've seen white people on Tiktok in Europe say that they had smudge sticks sent as a gift when they bought online from witchy stores. Like how can a European ethically buy from Indigenous people?
Some indigenous people have said if you buy it from an indigenous person or its gifted to you from an indigenous person, you can use it. I'm a believer in path of least harm. So if there is any chance that the use of white sage could be harming indigenous people (which it clearly has) then I don't want to partake.
Also I've heard some indigenous people say burning white sage isn't for cleansing but instead to welcome their ancestors into an area? And it's pretty obvious why I would say indigenous ancestor don't want to see my white face.
There's so many methods of cleansing that have zero percent chance of causing issue for indigenous people and zero percent chance of bothering indigenous ancestors. Unless you have an indigenous person giving it to you saying "I want you to use it". I say don't use it. Even if an indigenous person gives it to use. Use it in private.
If a shop owned by white people is selling it. Don't shop there.
If you REALLY want to smoke cleanse. Lavender. Rosemary. And if you REALLY want to use sage. There's like hundreds of variety of sage that isn't white sage that you can use and works remarkably well.

(1/2) hi, so branching off of a question you answered about specific details where you mentioned knowing the scents Armand would have Daniel wearing/15th century scents being your specialty etc.: fragrances are such an obsession of mine (esp. learning more abt historical fragrances) and i would Love to hear you talk more on that subject and about those aforementioned analogous modern products 👀
(2/2) when i first read the detail about how Armand had Daniel wearing a frankincense-clove-cinnamon blend and how it melded with his usual cig smoke aroma i thought ahh man what an atmospheric gift this is. i also immediately wanted to know if there's a real world frag that you had in mind when writing that or if i'm just going to have to be insane and make my own Daniel blend to sniff haha
So when it comes to 15th/16th century perfume there's a couple things going on that's important: ambergris and civet musk. These are the base notes of so many perfumes from the time. Ambergris comes from sperm whales and while still legal to use, it just doesn't get put in perfume anymore. Civet musk was straight up banned in the 90s.
Which means whatever modern perfume you get, it's not going to smell 'right'. Synthetic musk smells nothing like the real thing. But when Daniel and Armand were first together the real stuff was still being used so high quality perfume that matched historical scents would have been around.
As far as other notes go, there's two main categories: herbs/florals, and woods/spices/resins.
For herbs and florals you see a lot of lavendar, rose, chamomile, rosemary, sage, elderflower, jasmine, carnations, lily, juniper, orange blossom, and saffron.
For woods, resins, and spices you see a lot of sandalwood, agarwood, benzoin, cinnamon bark, cloves, frankincense and mastic resin.
They would be formulated in either a water base or an oil base. Rosewater and olive oil were common. And you either go for a spicy scent or a heavily floral scent.
SO. FOR MODERN PERFUMES.
The scent I described Daniel wearing is based on a real 15th century Venetian perfume called Olio di Gugliemo Piacentino. I don't know of a modern perfume that smells the same- in my head, Armand had it custom blended for him (because of course he would).
Number 1: You want to go for eau d'parfum. Most expensive, yes, but this is the strongest smells and won't be diluted with synthetic stuff that changes the scent profile. If you can get online and get an antique bottle that isn't gone sour, it'll be even more similar to renaissance scents.
Number 2: I suggest sticking to scents where the name includes or even hints at the scent profile itself. I just have more luck finding stuff that doesn't smell synthetic that way.
Number 3: Obviously these perfumes are insanely high priced. Sniff them, find one you like, then google a good dupe and go sniff that if you want to buy and wear it yourself. It won't wear the same but it'll be similar and not $500+
The two perfume houses I'd start with are Tom Ford and Clive Christian. Some specific scents are: Oud Wood (Tom Ford, woody/ spicy), Rose Prick (Tom ford, floral/roses), Jasmin Rouge (Tom Ford floral/amber), Amber Fougere (Clive Christian, resin/amber), 1872 Masculine (Clive Christian, floral/herbal/woody).
You can also find people doing recreations on Etsy (ymmv) and you can find the recipes to makes it yourself but the components are super expensive.
Another cheap way to dupe a scent profile from a historical recipe book is to get matching essential oils, put a couple drops into a carrier oil like olive oil, and then wear that.
I hope that answers your question ♥

✨Cleansing your space: A How-To Guide✨
1. 🧂Salt.
Simply sprinkle salt (a small grain type) on the carpet. After about an hour, vacuum. Salt crystals have an amazing natural built in-ability to absorb negative energy. As an alternative, you can put bowls of salt in the corners of the room and remove them after a few hours. *this works for people too. Instead of sprinkling yourself with salt, take a bath with 2 cups of sea salt in it. It’s grounding and clearing all at the same time.
2. 🧯Room spray
Buying or making a room spray with pure essential oils helps clear negative energy. The best ones to use for clearing are rose, lavender, frankincense, and patchouli. *this works for people too. Gently mist yourself with the spray!
3. 🎶High-Frequency Music
Playing high vibration music can make a big difference. We already know what a difference music can make in our own energy, and it does the same for spaces. Any music that makes you feel good will work!
4. 🖤 Black Tourmaline
This is my favorite crystal for clearing negative energy. I have several of them around my house. This crystal does not need to be cleared as others do.
*this works for people too. I often put it in my pocket or purse while traveling. It’s great for sensitive people who seem to pick up on the energy around them and need some extra protection.
5.❤️‍🔥Burning White Sage
You can buy white sage sticks in many places, including online. Burning this while you walk around your house with it (swirling it in a counterclockwise rotation) is really great for clearing bad energy.
I usually say something as I do it like “I’m clearing all stagnant energy from this space and allowing only that of the highest vibration to remain.” *this works for people too. Start at your feet swirling the smoke from the sage around you until you get all the way up to your head.
6. 💨Incense
Burn sandalwood incense or dried sage to disintegrate the negative energy in each room. Wave it counterclockwise in each corner, closet, and cabinet. You may also let one stick burn in each room. Say, “Thank you for the complete disintegration of all negative energies, thoughts, and emotions from this room now.”
7. 🕯️Candles
Light a candle to dedicate energy to your endeavors. Say your wish out loud. For example, “I am so grateful for all the love, harmony, and healthy energy pouring into my home right now.”
8. 🔔Bells
While Tibetan bells have additionally sacred symbolism to them, the ring of any bell will brighten up your space with positive energy. As the sound vibrations disperse blocked energy, the sweet chimes work to uplift the fresh energy leftover. Ring your bell throughout your space, working the vibrations into those overlooking areas.
9. 🛢️Essential Oils
Diffusing essential oils is a great way to clear negative energy from your home or office space, and as the oils stay in the air for hours afterward, you continue to experience their therapeutic properties. With the right essential oils, a diffuser can also set a positive, safe space and reduce the accumulation of negative energy in the first place.
10. 🧂Purification Salts.
Same principle with the sea salt, only with added herbs for extra oomph. I like Hyssop, Argomony, Rosemary, Lemon Balm, and Lavender. Grind together with Sea salt and Epsom salt and you have a powerful purification salt. Great for ritual baths as well!
Find what works for you, Witchcraft is not one size fits all, and there is a myriad of techniques and practices that you can adopt without appropriating. A little research and a lot of reading go a long way. I hope that this was at least marginally helpful.

¼ an ounce of yeast
The smell hits me first, his cologne. Hints of crisp citrus, sage, mint and leather. I bought him this one, so he could cover his clothes in them and It will linger when I ‘borrow’ them after a long day.
1 cup of warm milk
Our anniversary is today, in society It’s typical for the man to treat the woman but our relationship never really followed societal norms. I should make him something, I swear he mentioned once that he loved those.. Hm, what were they called..
½ a cup of sugar
He woke up, got dressed and left for work without even the slightest hint of seeming like he was gonna say goodbye. I’m sure there was some kind of important meeting he had to rush to get to. He really wouldn’t forget, Oh! Maybe he’s making a quick getaway to buy me something? That must be it.
½ a stick of butter
This recipe I found is really coming together, I’m considering adding my own touches so he doesn’t know I used a generic recipe online. Plus, It’s only between me and the kitchen if I stick my finger In the icing to taste It.
2 large eggs
I still get anxious using ovens, but I know I’ve been hurt by worse so a little burn shouldn't hurt that much if I slip up with a tray every so often. It only adds to the satisfaction at the end when you pull out the beautiful food you made.
1 teaspoon of salt
He will be home soon, I still need to set up the table and fix up the card I got him. I’m sure I have time though. Maybe he went to the jeweler after work and will spend extra time looking for the perfect ring. Tonight could be the night.
4½ cups of all-purpose flour
He’s empty handed. It’s not too much of a surprise, my thoughts this whole day can be summed up to my feminine tendencies to fantasize. I do often get lost in my head, It’s the obvious answer to it all. His eyeline does eventually find me once he sets down everything.
¾ a cup of brown sugar
“Those look delicious darling”
He smiles as he says It, compliments have always made me feel better.
“Thank you, I made them myself.. Family recipe”
I slid the plate that I had already prepared for him towards where he sat at the table.
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
He takes a big bite, the icing drips off the side of his mouth, still melted from the heat of the oven. The steam makes the scent of cinnamon and sugar waft throughout the apartment. They were magnificent, I’ve baked before but these probably put me on some list somewhere.
½ a stick of butter
The smell hits him first, It’s only after he takes the first bite. He comments out loud on it, asking if I added anything different than normal recipes. I tell him that It’s probably his own scent from a long day of hard work.
“Finish your food and go shower then we can sleep” I say
I’m sure it will be a comfortable sleep for him tonight
After all, good food always puts me to sleep.
6 teaspoons of rat poison
“Happy Anniversary, my love” I whisper as I lay down.
