@biovaliant -> "So... I know this is like, way early, but... mine and Jill's 20th wedding anniversary is next year and I was thinking about buying an old school bus to tear apart and turn into an RV. Obviously, I'm going to build it with her but I was hoping you could help me tear out the interior and keep the bus hidden until then?"
Chris probably looked slightly frazzled, olive colored paint smeared on his cheek and brown hair that was slightly longer than usual so his cowlicks had returned in full force. Despite his mess of an appearance, he was walking on air, the long weekend overall had been so pleasant thus far, just himself and the three people he loved most in this world helping decorate his first official home that wasn't a shitty apartment or the brownstone he had grew up in. Claire had of course offered to help him paint the dining room, and the two set out to do just that while Jill and his husband drove to the nearby furniture store to pick up the new purchases and bring lunch back. He knew Claire had offered to help out of the kindness of her heart, and he had an itching feeling that she missed him just as much as he missed her, but he also knew she had an ulterior motive just from the slight bounce of her heels and her gait and the way she was all too eager to have her wife and brother-in-law hustled out of the home. He waited patiently, ever the vigilant brother as they filled the once bare white walls with a soothing olive, pointed glances sent over to Claire periodically as he painted until she finally talked about whatever was on her mind.
He hadn't expected such a sweet question.
Tumblr media
A warm chuckle fills the room, and he's already in auto pilot mode, sliding his brush into the tray of paint so he could walk closer to her and clap her on the shoulder. " I can make a few calls. Got a soldier who owns a farm, he owes me a favor. Not too far from here either. " Not that there wasn't plenty of hiding spots for a bus in Canada, but it was better safe than sorry when Jill was a known sleuth. " But yes, you can count me in. Piers too, you can expect his help regardless, but I'll still use all my powers to convince him anyway. " He pauses, reaching out to smear a matching bit of paint on Claire's cheek. " I can hardly believe it's almost been twenty years since you tied the knot. Looking at you both, seeing you so happy. It delights me. Mama and Papa would be proud, petit oiseau d'amour. " The French spills out naturally despite the rarity it comes from Chris, it was painful reminder of parents long gone, but when it's spoken between them it almost felt like their father was still around, whispering devoted things to either his beloved wife or darling children.
Choosing to not dwell and mourn them on this happy day, he grins, smearing yet another blob of paint on Claire's face before backing away before she could return the favor. " Now that we got that settled let's get back to painting and hope that our beloved spouses bring back decent food. If it's not burgers and fries I say we both divorce them. " There's a smile to his words despite the empty threat, and he's already looking forward to helping Claire with her little romantic gift, stone skin couldn't hide a soft heart that bled for his darling family.

Thought I'd calmed down a little.
Nnnnnope. Just about bit the head off a coworker I like because I could not care less about playing detective over a laptop at the moment, which is generally one of my favorite work activities.
I have jobs to help find for my brother and my girlfriend, who will be moving in from over an hour out of town as my parents flee to Canada in an undetermined amount of time.
I have resumés to assist with, alongside packing assistance, alongside "do I buy the super cheap RV so my dad can travel comfortably or do I save money for my part of the bills we are taking over? Is this worth the credit card debt?"
I need to go hit a punching bag super fucking hard.
I also need to not physically take out my anger on anything for fear of hurting myself and making this situation worse. Even worse than that, for fear of accidentally hurting someone else.
I don't CARE about the laptop. And lord help the next one to ask why such-and-such isn't getting done faster.

Agree except at least in Canada the proper response to homelessness is ***telling the government to get the f out of the way because they are constantly stalling and stopping houses in general from being built which is making the housing market skyrocket and also making people pay blackbook value when they buy used cars and also not allowing people to use trailers and rvs that THEY OWN on their own property (you can only use trailers on campgrounds and in trailer parks) and getting rid of the taxes on the food which is a freaking necessity so people can actually afford their groceries and also maybe giving people a designated space to actually have tent cities instead of allowing them to just pitch tent anywhere and also stop paying municipalities per head so they are no longer incentivized to keep people homeless and also make it legal for people to give handouts to the homeless and and and
For goodness sake, we need to stop trusting the government to fix the problems it made in the first place. At some point we just gotta pick up our bootstraps and do it ourselves
listen. There's a whole mentality shift that needs to happen culture wide here, from the schools to the public infrastructure to pet ownership to the justice system
The proper response to your dog doing a natural behavior you dislike (digging/barking/protecting etc) it to give them an appropriate time and place to engage in that behavior
The proper response to skateboarders damaging infrastructure is to build more and better skate parks, or build skate elements into the public infrastructure on purpose.
The proper response to homeless people sleeping on park benches is to build them houses.
you see how there's like, a commonality at play here?
The proper response to a disruption is to address the root of the disruption directly, not somehow attack the disruption itself -
you don't invent a muffler by swinging a bat at the engine noise, you don't relieve your hunger by punching yourself in the stomach, you don't resolve public unrest by sending armed men to control them and you don't prevent homeless people using bus shelters a roof by removing the bus shelters.
a whole ass shift in a basic mindset, i'm tellin' you. We need it.

CANADA - BRITISH COLUMBIA
2023 Jun 25 (Sun) – Today was a very looooong day.  We left Sikanni at 8:00 a.m.  The drive was 240 miles.  It took us and our 3 three rigs six hours to arrive at Toad River Lodge.  The scenery along the way was fantastic.  The group spotted 7 bears (we only saw 2) and 2 caribou.  Someone else reported seeing stone sheep and big horn sheep during their drive.
After we inspected the campsites (I think there are 21 in the campground), we assigned spaces then greeted each group as they came in.  The fifth and last group arrived around 5 p.m.  During the drive, we stopped in Tetsa River to buy cinnamon buns.
We went to dinner in the café with Johnny & Linda.  The food was OK but expensive.   Afterward, we held a travel meeting in a tent site area.  Everyone is very upbeat and excited about the trip.
2023 Jun 24 (Sat) – It was a decent drive today – about 150 miles.  We left Dawson Creek at 9 a.m. with 3 rigs and drove 3-1/2 hours to Sikanni River Campground.  Sikanni (pronounced SICK-A-NEE) is a small way station along the Alaska Highway.  The campground (if you could call it that) was a dirt field with back-ins along the tree line and some pull-thrus on the side.  Most folks had 30 amp electric.  Three of us had 15 amp service; just enough to power the refrigerator.
2023 Jun 23 (Fri) – Today was a free day.  Everyone was free to go off and do what they wanted.  Paul and I worked on the next few stops.  Beth pointed out a discrepancy in the itinerary. Apparently, we scheduled both the optional jeep tour of Denali National Park for the same day as the Husky Homestead Tour.  My heart was in my throat as I contacted the Husky Homestead folks and asked for a change.  Luckily, they were able to reschedule us for the next day and more luckily, we had nothing planned for that day.  Whew!
At 6 p.m. we met back in Sudeten Hall for a travel meeting.  The group is coming together nicely.  There are good friendships being formed and the comradery is high.
2023 Jun 22 (Thu) – At 9 a.m. we all met at the Walter Wright Pioneer Village for a self-guided tour of the village.  We broke everyone up into groups, the same arrangement as when they drove here.  Our five groups headed off in their different directions and seemed to enjoy the nostalgia.
At 11:30 a.m. we gathered in Sudeten Hall for lunch catered by the Meat Doctor.  There was pulled pork, beef brisket, baked potato, cole slaw, strawberry cake, beverages and coffee.  Everything was delicious.
A representative from the visitor center – Melissa – came in and gave a presentation to the group about the Alaska Highway and Dawson Creek.  After her hour-long slide show, she gave everyone a certificate attesting to the fact they were at Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway.
We then all grabbed our jackets and sent to the Mile 0 Marker to take a group picture.  Paul took many individual shots as well.  Then Paul & I walked to the visitor center to pick up some post cards for the grandsons.  The docent told me where the post office was so we walked three block down main street to buy some stamps.  The post card stamps are the same as their first class stamps.  We walked back up main street, then returned to the campground.
At 5 p.m., several people gathered for happy hour.  Joe brought out the dice to play a yard game.  It was fun.
2023 Jun 21 (Wed) - We left Whitecourt in Alberta at 8 a.m., leading 3 RVs.  The weather was clear (no rain, yay!) and the scenery was very nice.  The roads were long and straight with lots of trees.  The drive was over six hours.  We stopped in Beaver Lodge for lunch and took a picture with a giant beaver sculpture.
Once we arrived, we figured out where everyone would go and set out the parking crew.  The last rig came in around 4 p.m.  It made for a very long day.  A small group gathered to socialize outside our rig around 6 p.m.  At 9, we came inside.  There was a one hour time change today which made for a longer day.  We are bushed!

Day 9 June 4 Koldern - Destruction Bay 136kms
That place yesterday did have a name but it was the only thing there!
When I first booked this place at Destruction Bay I thought it was only going to be 110kms from Koldern. Then yesterday it came up as 134km. Not Happy!
I decided that if it was windy I would hitch a ride again, otherwise I should be able to make it. There were not a lot of hitching options actually but I might have been able to get a lift. Everything is headed north for the summer.
Yesterday at 4pm there was a huge influx of RV’s . They were ALL heading north.
So today I got up early and was ready to go well before 8am. I had to sit next to the reception building to do my Wordle ( very important ( got it in 2)) and check a few other things.
I still left before 8 and took this photo of the park.
Tumblr media
It was a really nice one and I liked the lady, Amanda, too. Last night I had to pay for dinner b but she threw in a few extra salads and baked goods, so it was very enjoyable.
Tumblr media
I think I probably haven’t been eating enough and that’s why I’ve lacked a bit of my usual leg power. I haven’t really been hungry but I’m going to make sure I eat enough even if I have to pay ridiculous prices for it.
I wanted to really cover some distance before I stopped for my first break but I really had to stop and take photos of this fantastic reflection in the lake.
Tumblr media
As usual I was surrounded by gorgeous scenery all day but it was not a lot different from yesterday. Here’s another lake shot

I pushed on in the cool morning ( Pinkie had been taken out of her sac and donned again). After 55kms I started looking out for somewhere to stop.
It wasn’t until 62kms, halfway up a long hill , that there was a barrier I could sit on. I ate 4 tiny donuts ( revolting!) and some tiny bite sized chocolates , topped up my zinc and lip balm ( I’m getting very conscientious about this now) and continued up the hill.
The next 20kms were unsealed!

Some parts weren’t too bad and Shirley handled it well.
At 93kms there was a really nice rest stop/lookout so rather than waste an opportunity, I stopped for another break.

The road had been moderately hilly all day but had a lot of flat sections as well. I think the wind may have been behind me. 😁
I was keen to get to a place called Burwash Landing at 119kms because I had been told they had a good shop where I would be able to buy reasonably priced groceries. Unfortunately I wasn’t advised that they were closed on Sunday and Monday. The museum was open….it was the only other thing there.
I sat and had a quick snack and drink before heading off for my last 17kms. I thought it would drag by but I actually spotted a bear ahead about 100m up the road. It was on the shoulder and it moved off into the forest. I swerved to the other side of the road when I got close and saw a patch of brown fur glinting in the sun, in amongst the trees when I cycled by. Ooooh!!
10kms on and a car pulled up beside me to warn me they had seen a grizzly by the side of the road about 2kms ahead. I think it was earlier in the day and I figured that the cars coming from the opposite direction would let me know if it was still there.
Anyway, looking out for bears made the kms slip by a lot quicker than just watching the odometer slowly tic over.
I reached Destruction Bay at about 3:30 and paid a fortune for bread, cake and fruit. I’m going to have to buy a restaurant meal again tonight.
I couldn’t get the wifi or my mobile data to work. It occurred to me that my mobile data hadn’t worked since I entered Canada so I played around with the settings and got it to work. Then I played around with the wifi settings and got it to work…..although it keeps dropping out.
Tomorrow is going to be over 100kms again but hope I will reach a decent sized town where I can buy supplies.
