behold my new archsketchbook!
details: 15.5x21.5cm (roughly A5), 450gsm Hahnemühle rough watercolour paper, 2mm MDF board covers with antique dragon print, bound with a combination of coptic stitch and French link stitch with green linen ribbon.
some process pics and bits under the cut:
welcome to my desk, by the way!
i think my favourite part of making sketchbooks is picking out the materials. seeing what i can use from what i have, how it plays with what i can find at the shop, maybe something there surprises me and inspires me to change direction.
this time i wanted something light and springtimey, without strong contrasts, but the dragon print paper at the shop swept me away.
the shop only had big sheets of 450gsm watercolour paper, which meant single page signatures. i don't think i've ever painted on paper this thick. ended up only having 9 signatures (36 pages), but that's okay because i have a problem with finishing sketchbooks that are too long anyway.
initially i was considering buying a large metal pipe, sharpening it and sawing it in half, using it as a curved guillotine to cut out the arches, and while i do have the resources to do such a thing, if i'm only making one sketchbook, it's a bit overkill. (and unless someone commissions me (hello!), i don't think i'll be making more.) so i ended up cutting everything by hand and using sandpaper to even it off.
surprisingly, the arches were no trouble at all - i cut half-inch strips into the arched side and folded them over each other. while you can feel the corners by touch, visually it's a pretty smooth curve. i think the mix of starch glue and PVA glue (thanks @vociferal for the tips!) on the surprisingly durable dragon paper made for an easy process, as the paper stuck immediately, dried quickly and didn't leave any nasty residue.
i had doubts over whether to leave the ribbon on top of the cover or tuck it under the endpaper, but in the end i preferred the clean cover look. it does bulge under the endpaper (see the last pic before the cut) but i'm okay with that - it hints at the process, making it clear that this here is a unique object that was made in a way that hasn't been endlessly optimised by precise machines, but crafted by human hands, striving for perfection but inextricably, lovingly flawed.
now, if you'll excuse me, i have to go and fill this beauty with freaky swampcore paintings...
#yes i'm calling it the archsketchbook#yes it's automatically in charge of the other sketchbooks#bookbinding#sketchbook#diy#my crafts#my art

I've been looking through your archive trying to find the post where you did a tutorial for the cat scratching post, but can't find it! I'm going to make one for my own growing kitty, since he just outgrew his first one, and figured it would be cheaper to make than buy. Any chance you have the post?
No, but I can tell you about it! It's basically a square of heavy board--I used a 2-foot section of one-inch-thick MDF, cut in Home Depot to size. The post itself is just a section of 4x4 board, also cut in the store down to four feet tall. As a note--before it was cut, the MDF was 2x4' and the board was 8', so I actually wound up with precisely twice what I needed to make this project.
I picked up a post capper of my choosing, and 50 feet of sisal rope. You'll also want some 3" screws, a bunch of wood glue, and some kind of flathead nail or a big stapler. I also used fabric to cover the base of the post, attaching with a staple gun, and then attached a sheet of foamcore to the bottom so that it wouldn't scratch the floors.
Cover the base however you see fit--you could use carpet, if you wanted--and then, on the bottom and top, mark the center. Align your 4x4 post and use your long screws (drilled from the bottom of the base) to attach it. If you're thinking ahead, unravel one end of the sisal rope so that it lays flat, cover it in glue, and sandwich it between the base and the post when you do this.
From here, you can choose to paint or stain the post the same color as your rope, if you want to be fancy. Otherwise, just smother the post in wood glue and start wrapping with the rope. Every few rotations, use your nails or staples to anchor the rope to the post, continuing to the top. I used a 1/2 inch drill bit to make a hole at the top that I tucked and glued the end of the rope into, then attached the post capper over that so it would be neat.

Paintings For Sale!!!
Hey! I finally decided it's time to sell the paintings I've done throughout the past few years of school! Prices are negotiable and do not include the cost of shipping. Buyer pays for shipping. I am only able to ship these within the United States. Many of these pieces are large and/or heavy so I can't guarantee the shipping price won't be hefty, but I tried to price these pieces with that fact in mind. Please DM me if you'd like to buy one or have any questions.
"Flower Field" Acrylic on MDF board, 48 x 25 (inches), no frame/cradle and no hanger attached so it's a bit difficult to hang as is - $100
It's a bit heavy because it's MDF board so shipping may be expensive.
"Brighter Colors" Acrylic, Caulk, and Graphite Powder on Hollow Wooden Door, 79.5 x 24 x 1.25 (inches), No hinges or doorknob, no hanger attached, slight damage to top of door - $300
Based on Brighter Colors by Alter-P
"Lanterns Lit" Acrylic on Textured Enameled Door, 80 x 32 x 1.25 (inches), no doorknob, hinges still attached, metal picture hanger attached to back - $300
Based on Lanterns Lit by Son Lux
This door is very heavy so shipping will probably be a lot as well.
"Are You Going To Leave Me?" Acrylic on Masonite Panel, 72 x 36 x 2 (inches) - $300
Based on the song Are You Going To Leave Me? by Big Void feat. Big Al
"Heat Abnormal" Acrylic, Graphite Powder, and Metalic Powder on Hollow Wooden Door, 80 x 30 x 1.25 (inches), No Door Handle, Metal Hinges and Metal Hangers attached, door slightly damaged. - $300
Based on Heat Abnormal by Iyowa
"Scribble Face: I'm Afraid of Doctors" Acrylic, Hot Glue, Chalk Pastels, and Graphite Powder on Canvas, 18 x 24 (inches) - $75
"What it Feels Like to Drown" Acrylic on Canvas, 40 x 40 x 2 (inches) - $200
"On Loop" Acrylic on Masonite Panel, 42 x 42 x 2 (inches) - $200
Based on a playlist of like 20ish songs I had on loop that semester.
"Monster" Acrylic on MDF Board, 49 x 25 (inches), No Frame/Cradle or Hanger attached so it's a bit hard to hang as is. - $125
It's a bit heavy because it's MDF board so shipping price may be high.
Even if you can't or don't want to buy a painting, I'd super appreciate if you would reblog this and spread it so I can get these paintings out of our closet and maybe make some money. It's the first time I'm posting pictures of most of these so I hope you like them~

to make it as a big shot illustrator you have to have your style Down in the early days, hell that was drilled into me in uni. and you see all of these gorgeous illustrators who can just churn out different portraits all characterful and THEM. their style, shake it this way or that its them.
but im disabled, im never gonna live like those big shot illustrators, so im kind of glad im still jiggling and searching and scrounging. friends tell me they know my work is Mine, but i also have a variety in me, its exciting, its hard,
anyway so my mum gave me her old very fancy easel, and i went to b&q yesterday to buy a mdf board like you have in uni to tape your paper against. i got it cut to size n everything :) and i ordered a pack if 200 a2 sheets
now im waiting and practicing faces on procreate, i know it’ll be a different beast in brush ink but im happy i guess

Ok not to step on your suitor's toes and no need to publish or respond as this is totally unsolicited advice.
I have a kitchen that's not solid wood, it's made from MDF board, and I haven't painted it but here is what I would do if I were to ever paint it...
I really recommend that you do your research before painting the kitchen cupboards.
https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/renovation/tips/a31753/painting-cabinet-mistakes/
It would be no harm to talk to people in a paint shop / hard ware shop that sells paint and ask for advice on your project with the hope that wastage on cost and paint is avoided. I suggest taking pictures to show them etc if you do go this route.
I have refurbished old wooden furniture so I love a good project, and wish you the best of luck! I'm quite envious right now actually 😁
AAAAAAH thank you
All advice is welcome!
I'm gonna do extensive research! My cabinets are kinda very shitty plasticky stuff so I'll probably do a patch test before committing to it!
Talking the hardware shop employees 🙃 my favourite thing to do as a woman... They usually treat me like I'm stupid 🙃 and I'll be buying pink paint too 😭😭😭😭
If you're envious come over and help me paint 😂😂😂
(I've recruited my irl bestie to help me, she's an artist, so that should help!)

Also I just need to point out that yes, indeed my car burns 7 litres of gasoline every 100 kilometres. My house burns a ton of coal and about a half ton of wood every cold season. Yes, I do sort of poison the environment with my choices. Yes, I could be more careful, maybe I could buy a better car for the money I don't have or figure out a better way of heating my house. I feel that I could do that. It would probably help a bit.
But then again I know there's war in Ukraine and every day dozens of cars, tanks and other equipment, including plastic parts and tires, gets burned to the ground. I know that there are landfills that burn every day. I know that people around me use coal to heat their water so they can take a shower. I know people put plastic bottles, MDF boards and other junk into their furnaces. I know people who do all that.
And yes, I know it seems like an excuse; I could be doing this or that for saving the environment. I probably could. But then again, everyday I see dozens of heavy trucks riding past my workplace, my house, passing me on the roads. And I know how many litres they eat. How much carbon dioxide they produce. And other stuff. And other people.
Do I feel sorry for the planet? Yes.
Do I feel that I am able to do anything about it? Not really.
But do I feel guilty anyway? Yes.
And what saddens me the most is that those who poison us the most, simply don't care.
