OK, so while I sew a lot, I've always thought of embroidery as something I Just Can't Do Properly, because I was bad at it when I tried to learn it, while other crafts I've picked up easily.
And then I realised what had happened.
Mother often offloaded me on her three great aunts when I was a kid and they had the tools, knowledge and supplies for knitting and dressmaking, and soon figured out that teaching me to Make Things was a great way of keeping me quiet.
And they'd all done a lot of embroidery when they were young, beautiful tablecloths and things, BUT they'd stuck to more practical things as soon as they were out of what passed for school then, so they didn't have the stuff for doing embroidery, so when they tried to teach me it was with a crappy kids' kit with a plastic hoop that couldn't hold its own shape never mind the fabric and a blunt needle, so no wonder I sucked at it.
What would be your recommendation for someone getting started?
Hey there! Damn, that's pretty insightful for you to realize and it makes a lot of sense. I'm happy to help you get started!
My usual recommendation from absolute zero is to just buy a kit with everything you need from a reputable vendor. Since you have a crafting history I think you're good to not be overwhelmed by the stuff you need to buy. You'll need:
a pattern
a hoop (plastic are totally fine, just not the kids ones you used)
non stretchy fabric (I like kona quilting cotton for beginners, it's a name they can search for easier, is widely available, and good quality without being expensive)
embroidery floss (dmc, anchor, or cosmo are available worldwide depending on where you are and are high quality)
embroidery needles (larger eyes, sharp tip)
scissors
way to transfer your pattern to your fabric
Transferring a pattern is as simple as using a window as a tracing pad and copying the pattern from the paper printout to your fabric using a washaway or heat erase pen. You can also use chalk. There are fancier ways to transfer, let's keep it simple for now though.
I like patterns that casually integrate a large amount of stitches into a design. The ones that are like, carefully laid out sections of DO A BACKSTITCH 5 TIMES. DO A CHAINSTITCH 5 TIMES. DO 3 FRENCH KNOTS - those don't teach you anything in a way that matters. it's not enough repetition to make the stitches stick in your mind nor is it integrated learning to see how stitches look in situ in order to get a grasp of how to use them for your own art.
To learn to do stitches, I like the Royal School of Needlework stitch bank. Other stitch banks online don't give the historical citations for their stitches and often make shit up just to look more impressive or have options not on any other site. Yeah, of course other sites wouldn't have your made up stitch name.
DMC's free patterns are high quality, tell you what threads to buy, and are aimed at all skill levels. I'm linking the list of the ones I personally think are good for beginners to learn on under a cut here because this is getting long!
Blue Hill - wreath with blue flowers
Etoile Constellation - celestial star/moon/sun tableau. Ignore the call for etoile threads tbh and just use the number codes for the plain colors
Etoile Magic Star - tri-toned shooting star. Ignore the call for etoile threads tbh and just use the number codes for the plain colors
Strawberries - a scattered ditzy design with strawberries, leaves, and flowers
Lemons - a scattered ditzy design with lemons and sprigs of flowers and leaves
Oranges - a scattered ditzy design with whole oranges, orange slices, and sprigs of leaves
Raspberries and Roses - a scattered ditzy design with raspberries, roses, leaves, and flower bits
Toadstool - an amanita mushroom scene. This one's really fucking popular online, you see it a lot.
Jellyfish - uses a variety of stitches to give texture to the titular sealife
Octopus - uses a variety of stitches to give texture to the titular sealife
Seahorse - uses a variety of stitches to give texture to the titular sealife
Shrimp - uses a variety of stitches to give texture to the titular sealife
An Hee Jin, Toucan - cute lil toucan on a branch with leaves and flowers
Flying Snakes - snakes but theyre circus performers. lean into the whimsy. life is short.
Woodland Bear - forest scene with a bear. Lots of french knots for the trees, still a beginner pattern. Get that practice in.

friendship bracelets:
Zack makes them, obviously, because he’s a sentimental dork, and in Gongaga it’s considered a sign of great affection to give someone something like jewellery. I like to think there’s a Gongagan tradition/ holiday a bit like Valentine’s Day but it’s for showing appreciation to everyone. And on this day people swap hand made jewellery to signify their respect and love for a person.
Mostly Gongagan kids swap them, and it’s a big thing in school, but Adults do also observe the day with those closest to them -or someone who has done them a great service through the year!
Zack hasn’t really observed the holiday since he left home, but when he finally becomes FIRST he gets kind of sentimental and homesick for some reason. So he buys a bracelet making kit from a craft store and makes a bunch of bracelets for his fellow firsts and Cloud and Kunsel, he makes one for Aerith too!
Giving them to Kunsel is pretty easy. They’ve been friends for years and have talked a lot about Gongagan holidays before. Kunsel is pretty touched actually, and hugs Zack. It’s a nice little moment between them. Quality brotherly affection. Hense the reason the word “brother” is stamped on the bracelet.
Giving Cloud his is funny only because Cloud goes bright red in the face and stutters through accepting it. Zacks pretty smug throughout the entire encounter about making Cloud blush like that. But he’s also incredibly emotional when Cloud turns up at 12:00 PM the same night and pushes a bracelet into Zack’s hand. Zack hadn’t known what to stamp on Clouds “best friend” seemed too weak and and anything more then that felt presumptuous to the point of impertinence, considering he was still battling with how he felt about Cloud. In the end he’d gone with “legacy” which felt like a cop out but Cloud seemed to like it.
It’s only as he looks down at the word printed on his bracelet that he realises he needs to seriously get his act together with Cloud… the word that both brakes his heart and makes it soar “everything”.
Aerith is pretty happy with her bracelet, and as she does with most things, gives him a bunch of flowers for his efforts! He deliberated on what to put on hers too. “Girlfriend” made him feel guilty. He loves her, he does… but he knows, and she knows that they’re playing a game until Zack tells her about Cloud. Instead he stamps “soul” on hers because she will always know his soul better than anyone.
Giving Angeal his is nerve wracking because it makes Zack feel stupid. He knows Angeal wouldn’t make fun of his homes tradition, but still… in the end the worrying is for nothing. Zack gives Angeal the bracelet stamped “mentor” and Angeal is very touched and even a little emotional over it actually. He gives Zack a side hug and puts the bracelet on immediately.
Genesis is -if possible- even more nerve wracking, because Zacknis absolutely sure he’ll be made fun of. He positively shakes out of his skin giving the bracelet stamped “hero” to Genesis and for a second Gen does do his whole “shoot it down in flames” thing until he realises two things: 1. Zack had gone to extend a art lengths to match the colour red to Gens coat, and 2. he turns it over in his hand and runs his fingers over the letters stamped into soft leather.
Zack absolutely panics when Genesis starts to cry. Gens emotional sure, but Zacks never seen the man cry. Gen asks him “why would you spend time on this for me?” And Zack tells him the truth, “cause you are a hero Genesis, and I wanted you to know that people see you that way.”
Genesis is never taking the bracelet off. Ever.
Then the only person left to give a bracelet to is Sephiroth. It is exceptionally hard to pin the man down that day, and in the end Zack has to wait a week for him to come back from mission. And then it’s terrifying to hand it over.
What’s even more terrifying is that Sephiroth kind of stops breathing for a second when Zack gives it to him. He sits on the edge of his desk heavily and stares at the inscribed bracelet in his hand. Zack says his name at least three times before Seph responds to him. When he does it’s with a shaking “why?” And Zack can only hug him and whisper back “because you are,”
The stamp simply reads “best friend” but it’s enough to bring the great general sephiroth to his knees.
***
Alternative title for this little headcanon is:
Zack Fair stops crisis core with the power of friendship.

Uhhmmm sorry for not working on my secret DJ project or writing anything but I realized this was close to being done so I spent the afternoon finishing the last of it.
The artist is yuumei-art here on tumblr (I'm not sure if they'd want to be tagged, apologies if I'm guessing wrong) and the kit was purchased from Diamond Art Club which DOES work with artists, so the art was used with permission and credited.
Slight PSA/ramble below
Careful about who you buy diamond paintings or counted cross stitch patterns from because so many sites are shit. (To the point where I've seen things listed as "counted cross stitch diamond painting" which is not a thing and it's highly unlikely that they're actually giving you both products with your order.)
A lot of them do not work with the artists, just grab pretty pictures and make patterns from them. Which is fine (imo) if you're doing it for like...an MCU movie poster or a Disney poster or some other hugely rich IP, less so if you're doing it to an indie artist. Where the line is on that will vary from person to person, but even if you don't care about that, there's another thing to consider.
It's very easy to just run a piece of art through a filter to limit colors/pixelcount and convert it into a xstitch pattern or diamond painting grid, but the result will often give you something that just looks like a crunchy jpeg. (Diamond Art Club and probably most of the diamond painting kids you'd find in craft stores do not do this as far as I can tell, or at least if they do they touch up the piece so you get those nice well-defined edges like what you see around the tiger's face.) This is less of a problem for xstitch kits because depending on the fabric weave, the smaller "pixels" give you a better DPI, basically.
Basically, if you're looking at a DP or Xstitch kit and they ONLY show you the art the work was made from, no finished piece or even a rendering of what the finished piece would look like...proceed with EXTREME caution because you'll probably get a jpeg with some amount of crunchiness to it.
...oh god nobody tell these companies about AI art...fuck...oh no...oh nononono....

how to develop hobbies and actually make time to do them even when you are busy with school and work? i feel like my only hobbies are media consumption but i don't know how to even get a hobby or how to make time for one
It will depend a bit on what you like to do and what your schedule looks like, but I would try to replace some of the time you spend on social media with a hobby you already know you like. Maybe when you get home from school or work you spend two hours scrolling online that you could use for other things. So instead of jumping straight into scrolling when you get home, maybe you devote just five minutes to a new hobby, and then scroll for the rest of the time. Even just five minutes of working on a hobby is better than nothing, and a lot of the time, just getting over the hump of starting something can get us to do it for much longer than we originally planned because we remember that it's fun.
Another option is to do your hobby while you're doing something that you already do a lot of. Maybe you start doing a craft while scrolling on TikTok or working out while watching TV. That way, you're linking something that you already know you like to do with something you want to do more of.
As far as picking a hobby goes, I would start with something that you've enjoyed in the past. Maybe it's something you've done a couple of times and really liked, or maybe it's something you enjoyed as a kid but haven't done in years. Starting with something you already enjoy makes it easier to fall back into enjoying it, and there's less of a barrier to entry because you don't need to re-learn how to do the activity. If nothing comes to mind, I would try buying a really easy crafting kit. I personally have really been enjoying these punch needle crafting kits, but coloring, doodling, diamond art, LEGO, origami, needle felting, and other stuff like that are all great options.
If you've tried all of this and it's just not working, I would try to find a hobby class or group in your area. Sometimes it's easier to actually work on projects when you have other people around, and it's definitely easier to learn a complicated skill if you have someone there to teach you. Pottery classes are great for this, since they're available pretty much everywhere, the people are super friendly, and you get a useable piece out of each class.

would the kids ever actually play with or find comfort in any of their toys or belongings that lawrence buys them? also what are some examples of the different toys or activities he bought for his kids?
Marshall would play with them out of boredom and then as he gets Stockholm syndrome, he’d find some attachment and comfort in them; so would Sadie, even if it’d take longer.
Nathan would try breaking them on purpose, but when Lawrence keeps buying more and making them somehow even more childish each time, he’d eventually just leave them alone. He secretly plays with them from boredom, but he’d never admit that.
For Sadie, Lawrence got her: dolls, play sets, dress-up costumes, arts and crafts kits, and toy kitchen sets. To fit her specific interests, he also got a toy camera and educational STEM toys.
For Nathan, Lawrence got him: action figures, building blocks, toy cars, and superhero-themed toys. Since Nathan’s favorite animal is a lion, he did get him lots of lion stuffed animals.
Lastly, Lawrence got Marshall mostly the same things both Sadie and Nathan got, along with at least ten times the plushies both Sadie and Nathan got.

do you think the seven had to go shopping every once in a while to get like toiletries and first aid and whatnot. Like theyd need detergent because they keep ruining their clothes with monster dust. frank's lactose intolerance pills. pads for the girls (+leo). I think piper would peel the stickers off the fruit and put them on everyone when they're not looking. percy and jason would have mock swordfights with the plastic utensils. Leo would keep putting pet food in the cart insisting it's for frank. Annabeth buys copious amounts of candy. Hazel discovers one of those bracelet kits with the beads and hooks and strings in the arts and crafts aisle and makes a fuckton of them for everyone except nobody wears them because they're scared they'll lose them on quests. piper and frank pay because they're the rich kids. Idk

From Blank Canvas to Masterpiece: A Comprehensive Guide to Beginner Painting Kits
Painting is more than just a way to fill blank spaces; it's an opportunity for self-expression and creativity. Recently, there's been a surge of interest in painting as a relaxing hobby. People are discovering the joy that comes from mixing colors and creating art from scratch. Whether you're looking to unwind after a long day or want to explore your artistic side, diving into painting can be incredibly fulfilling. For beginners, finding the right tools can be overwhelming. With so many options available, it’s easy to feel lost before you even start. That's where beginner painting kits come into play—these all-in-one packages are designed specifically for those new to the craft. They provide everything you need to embark on your creative journey without any guesswork involved. If you've ever dreamed of transforming a blank canvas into your own masterpiece, now is the perfect time to pick up that paintbrush!
Benefits of starting with a beginner painting kit
Starting with a beginner painting kit for beginners opens the door to creativity without overwhelming you. These kits are designed specifically for novices, making them accessible and user-friendly. One of the standout benefits is that everything you need comes in one package. No more scouring art supply stores or spending hours deciding what to buy. This convenience allows you to focus on your artistic journey instead of getting bogged down by choices. Beginner painting kits often include step-by-step instructions or tutorials as well. This guidance can help build your confidence and skills from the very start. You won't feel lost; you'll have a roadmap to follow. Moreover, these kits encourage experimentation. With various mediums like acrylics, watercolors, or oils included, you're free to discover which style resonates with you most—right at your fingertips! It's all about exploration and having fun while learning.
Essential Tools and Materials included in a Beginner Painting Kit
When diving into the world of painting, having the right tools can make all the difference. A beginner painting kit typically includes everything you need to get started on your artistic journey. First and foremost are the paints themselves. Most kits come with acrylics, watercolors, or oils. Acrylics are often favored for their versatility and quick drying time, making them ideal for beginners who want to experiment without waiting long between layers. Brushes are another essential component. Beginner kits usually include a variety of shapes and sizes—from flat to round brushes—to help you explore different techniques. Having multiple brush options allows you to create fine details as well as broader strokes. Canvas or paper is also included in many kits. Some may provide pre-stretched canvases while others offer watercolor paper suitable for various mediums. This allows new artists to practice freely without needing to purchase additional surfaces right away. Palettes are important too! They help mix colors and keep your workspace organized. Many beginner kits will feature a simple plastic palette that’s easy to clean after use. Some sets include easels—either tabletop or standing—to ensure comfort during those creative sessions. An easel helps maintain proper posture when you're focused on bringing your vision to life. With these essential tools at your disposal from a painting kit for beginners, you'll be well-equipped to unleash your creativity and transform blank canvases into stunning masterpieces! Whether working alone or taking part in classes, there's nothing quite like watching your skills grow with each stroke of color applied thoughtfully onto canvas.

A Parent's Guide to Finding the Best Kids Toy Shop and Shopping for Toys Online
In today’s fast-paced world, finding the right kids toy shop can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. With a plethora of options available both in-store and online, it's essential to know where to start, what to look for, and how to make informed choices when buying toys for children. This guide will help you navigate the landscape of kids toy shops and explore the convenience of shopping for kids toys online.
Why Choosing the Right Kids Toy Shop Matters
The world of children's toys is vast, and not all toy shops are created equal. A great kids toy shop should offer a wide variety of toys that cater to different age groups, interests, and developmental needs. Whether you're looking for educational toys, classic playthings, or the latest action figures and dolls, a well-stocked toy store is the first step to ensuring you get the perfect item for your child.
What to Look for in a Kids Toy Shop:
Diverse Product Range: A good toy shop will have everything from board games and puzzles to outdoor toys and arts and crafts kits. The wider the selection, the more likely you'll find something that suits your child's personality and developmental stage.
Quality Over Quantity: It's tempting to buy a lot of toys, but focusing on quality is key. Look for toys made from durable, child-safe materials. Reputable toy shops will stock well-known brands known for their safety standards.
Customer Service and Expertise: Knowledgeable staff who can recommend toys based on your child’s age or developmental milestones are invaluable. If you’re unsure about which toy to buy, a quality kids toy shop will have staff who can offer insights based on their experience.
Safety Standards: Always prioritize stores that adhere to safety standards and provide clear labels about age-appropriateness and potential hazards (like small parts that could pose choking risks). Reputable shops will stock toys from manufacturers that follow strict safety guidelines.
In-Store Experience: When visiting a physical toy shop, observe how the store is organized. Is it clean, well-lit, and easy to navigate? Are the toys accessible for kids to explore? Many top-notch kids toy shops provide play areas where children can try out toys, offering parents a chance to see how their child engages with different items before buying.
The Convenience of Shopping for Kids Toys Online
While brick-and-mortar stores have their charm, there’s no denying the convenience of shopping for kids toys online. Online shopping has become increasingly popular due to its ease, variety, and the ability to compare prices with just a few clicks. If you’re too busy to visit a physical store or need a toy delivered quickly, buying kids toys online can be a lifesaver.
Here’s why online toy shopping is a game-changer for many parents:
1. Wide Selection and Variety
Shopping for kids toys online provides access to an incredible range of products. Whether you're looking for a specific brand, an educational toy, or a unique item that may not be available in your local store, online retailers can provide a much broader selection. Many kids toy shops that operate online have extensive inventories, so you’re more likely to find niche products or the latest trends without having to leave your house.
2. Customer Reviews and Ratings
One of the biggest advantages of shopping for kids toys online is the availability of customer reviews and ratings. These insights can be incredibly helpful in guiding your purchase decision. When looking for toys in an online kids toy shop, you can read about other parents' experiences with the product, its durability, and whether their children enjoyed it. Reviews often highlight issues like poor quality or safety concerns, giving you a clearer picture before buying.
3. Price Comparison and Discounts
Online shopping allows you to compare prices from various retailers quickly. Many websites will also offer promotions, discounts, and free shipping deals. Some kids toy shops offer membership programs or newsletters where customers can receive exclusive offers. By doing a bit of research, you can often find high-quality toys at a lower cost than in physical stores.
4. Easy Returns and Exchange Policies
Most reputable online kids toy shops offer hassle-free return and exchange policies. If a toy isn't quite what you expected or your child doesn't take to it, returning it is usually simple and quick. Just make sure to review the return policy before purchasing, as some items may be subject to specific conditions.
5. Safety and Certification Information
Many online kids toy shops provide detailed product descriptions, including safety certifications and warnings. This helps you make informed choices, especially if you're buying toys for very young children. Some websites even allow you to filter toys by age, brand, or educational focus, making it easier to find age-appropriate and developmentally beneficial toys.
Tips for Buying Kids Toys Online
Research Before You Buy: Spend time reading reviews and checking ratings. Make sure you are purchasing from a reputable website, preferably one with a clear return policy and customer service support.
Prioritize Safety: Check for any safety certifications on toys, such as CE markings or labels indicating the toy meets the required safety standards for your country.
Look for Educational Value: Many toys are designed to stimulate creativity and cognitive development. Consider Your Child’s Interests: Always keep your child’s preferences in mind when shopping for toys. Whether they love dinosaurs, princesses, or building blocks, finding toys that match their current interests will make playtime much more enjoyable.
