"Here’s what we know about Julia Felix: she lived in Pompeii from at least 62 CE. She was possibly illegitimate but was definitely not a member of the social and cultural elite. She worked for a living setting up and running a very interesting business and, by 79 CE, she had planned to shift her focus from managing a business to owning property. We know all these things because twentieth-century excavations at her business uncovered an advert, carved in stone and attached to the external wall of her huge building. It reads:
"To rent for the period of five years from the thirteenth day of next August to the thirteenth day of the sixth August, the Venus Bath fitted for the nogentium, shops with living quarters over the shops, apartments on the second floor located in the building of Julia Felix, daughter of Spurius. At the end of five years, the agreement is terminated."
This find illuminated the building it was attached to, bringing what otherwise looked like a very large anonymous domestic house into dazzling focus. With this description of the purpose of each room written by the owner herself, archaeologists and historians could see the site through a whole new lens and they realised that they had discovered a Roman entertainment space for the working middle classes. It is, so far, a completely unique find and it is magnificent. It offers us, as modern viewers, two amazing things: a little glimpse into the lives of the commercial classes of the Roman Empire who are so often completely and utterly invisible, and a brutal reminder that so much of what we ‘know’ about Roman women in the Roman world comes from rules concerning only the most elite.
We’ll do that second part first, because it’s the least fun. Roman written and legal sources are pretty universal in their agreement that although women could own property, they could not control it; they had no legal rights, could not make contracts and were to be treated as minors by the legal system for their entire lives. In order to buy or sell property women required a male guardian to oversee and sign off on any transactions. This is a basic truism of women in the Roman Empire, repeated ad nauseum by sources both ancient and modern including me, and it is undermined by Julia Felix’s rental notice.
The rental ad makes it pretty clear that Julia Felix is the owner-operator of a business complex including public baths, shops and apartments (there’s more too, as we’ll see), and she doesn’t seem to require anyone else to help her rent it out. She names her father – sort of; ‘Spurius’ might just mean that she is illegitimate – but this is effectively a surname, a personal identifier to differentiate her from other Julia Felixes in the area. It doesn’t mean her father was involved. Furthermore, the use of her father’s name as an identifier suggests that Julia didn’t have a husband and was either unmarried or widowed in 79 CE. The strong implication of her advert is that Julia Felix was an independent lady, a honey making money and a momma profiting dollars who could truthfully throw her hands up to Destiny’s Child.
We will never know if Julia escaped the flames and choking ash of 79 CE, fleeing as it swallowed her business and her home, but one discovery, made on 28 January 1952, suggests that she didn’t. The archaeologists, led by Amedeo Maiuri, uncovered on that day the skeleton of a woman who had fallen while running across the garden during the disaster. It’s clear this fallen woman was well off, because she was wearing a lot of gold jewellery. She carried four gold half-hoop earrings and wore four gold rings. Two of these rings were particularly expensive; both contained a red carnelian gem, one carved with a figure of Mercury, the other with an eagle. Around her neck she wore a necklace of gold filigree, dotted with ten pearls and hung with a green pendant. Someone stole both the necklace and earrings from the Pompeii Antiquarium in 1975 and no one, somehow, had ever bothered to photograph them so all we have are descriptions but the rings that survive are fine and expensive. The woman who wore them – was wearing them when she died – had real money to buy these objects and the woman who wore them did'nt leave Pompei in time.
Moreover, when she was found it was clear that at the moment of her death she was heading not towards the street or towards safety, but towards the shrine to Isis in the garden where all the most valuable possessions were kept. The valuable possessions that Julia Felix grafted for and maybe couldn’t bear to leave behind. There’s no way to tell whether this skeleton is Julia Felix, whether these bones once stood and looked at the plots of land Julia bought and made plans, or whether they belong to a looter or a chancer or someone just caught out. But it’s nice to pretend that Julia Felix, who shaped the city’s roads around her dream and offered respite and luxury to workers and made a tonne of money doing it, died and was buried with the place that still bears her name."

13th doctor x reader - when I look at you
I was wondering if you could please do 2024 prompt #3 with the 13th doctor, if you still write for her? - Anon 💜
3 : “He/she/they carry more anger and pain then the whole universe combined, I can see it. Betrayal, hurt, deception, heartache, they’ve been through it all. He/she/they walked through hell a thousand times.” “Why are you telling me this?” “Because the only time I’ve ever seen true peace in his/her’s/their eyes is when he/she/they saw you.”
Grinning a little bit, you wondered over to one of the alien market stalls, looking at all the strange objects that they were selling.
“What’s this?” You asked.
The being behind the stall smiled at you, picking up the object you pointed to.
“It allows you to find whatever is on your mind, created a hologram map to it.”
“Oh awesome! This is going to help me find the doctor so much easier.”
“You’re friends with the doctor?”
You nodded your head and grinned sheepishly.
“It’s actually why I’m buying it, I have no clue where she went. How much is it?”
The alien smiled a little bit, holding their hands out to you and you held your hands, letting them pass you the bracelet.
“A friend of the doctor is a friend of me. The doctor saved me and many of my people, gave us a home here.”
You smiled softly.
“Yeah.. yeah she’s a good person..” you whispered.
You pressed a button on the bracelet and thought about the doctor, looking at the holographic map that showed she wasn’t all that far from you.
The alien came to stand next to you as you looked around trying to find her, and finally your eyes settled on her just down the street looking at something.
Apparently she had already found you because after a few seconds of looking at her she looked up and beamed brightly at you, holding up her hand, telling you to stay there so you nodded.
You let go of the bracelet and lowered your hand, putting your hands into the pockets of the hoodie you had taken from the doctor a while back.
The doctor got something and she ran over to you, nearly tripping over her own two feet as she came barrelling to a stop.
“I have a surprise for you! Close your eyes!”
You did as she said and you felt her take one of your hands, pressing something into your palm.
“Open them!”
She was beaming with pure happiness like always when she found something to show you, and you looked at the necklace she placed in your hand.
It was shaped like a star, and the middle of it was almost impossibly bright, but it didn’t hurt to look at.
“Wow… it’s so beautiful…” you whispered.
“A long time ago they learned how to harness the light from suns, turn them into jewellery and they’ve fast become popular all over the universe.” The doctor explained.
“Why?”
She took the necklace from you, standing behind you so she could put it around your neck.
“Well, in a lot of cultures it’s a sign that you’re spoken for, others it’s a way for somebody to say they love you.”
You smiled softly, watching as she walked around you.
“Then why do I have it?”
She just grinned brightly at you, taking your hand to kiss your knuckles before she beamed at the alien next to you, speaking in a language you couldn’t understand.
The TARDIS was great at translating but you soon learned that when the doctor was saying something that the TARDIS decided you weren’t allowed to her then you wouldn’t be offered translation.
Usually it revolved around you, something being said about you, nothing bad, always good things, it was the TARDIS respecting the doctors wishes to keep things a surprise.
So, you just stood there happily watching her, every so often catching her glancing at you, giving you the warmest smile possibly before turning to her old friend.
Finally the doctor turned to you and she walked over, kissing your cheek.
“Will you wait here? I’ll be just a few moments I’ve got to run an errand.”
“Of course I will, be safe.”
The doctor smiled ever so gently at you and she jogged away, and you turned back to the alien you were stood with.
They were watching the doctor jog away when they spoke.
“She carries more anger and pain than the whole universe combined, I can see it. Betrayal, hurt, deception, heartache, they’ve been through it all. She walked through hell a thousand times.”
You furrowed your brows a little bit in confusion.
“Why are you telling me this?”
The alien turned to you and they smiled slightly.
“Because the only time I’ve ever seen true peace in her eyes is when she saw you.”
“Really?”
“Oh yes. The doctor looks at you and it’s as if she has just watched the stars being made for the very first time, as if the whole beauty of the universe itself resides within you.”
You looked away shyly.
“I didn’t realise…”
“The doctor loves you wholly with both hearts, I can see that as clear as day, and perhaps, when you feel the time is right, you should act upon the love you have in return, I promise your advances will not be rejected.”
You thought about what they had said.
You and the doctor had always had this one and off kind of situation, you held hands, often she would kiss your cheek or knuckles, and she was insistent on giving you beautiful gifts.
You in return gave her your favourite hoodies to wear if you had to stay at earth for a while, you would always call her every night to tell her about your day and listen to her talk about hers.
You had never seen anybody during this time, and you couldn’t deny how you felt about the doctor.
As the doctor came back and you both made your way back to the TARDIS you were deep in thought.
You didn’t even realise the doctor was in front of you until you felt her hand gently touch the side of your face, and you snapped your eyes to her.
She had her brows furrowed, eyes full of concern.
“Is everything okay…? Did I do something to upset you…?” She whispered.
You didn’t think.
This whole time you had been hesitating, and you didn’t want to hesitate anymore.
You reached up, cradling her face and you leant forward.
The doctor didn’t waste any time in meeting you halfway, connecting her lips with yours, her hand moving to the back of your head as she stepped closer.
You smiled into the kiss and she did the same thing, placing her other hand on your waist, and finally she pulled away.
“Wow… okay.. that was.. wow..” she breathed.
You laughed softly, and she grinned.
“Do it again.”
You leant forward to quickly kiss her again before pulling away.
“Doctor the TARDIS stopped I need to go home.”
“Wait!”
You stopped at the door, and turned to look at her.
“I want another.” She beamed
You laughed, leaving the TARDIS and she was right behind you.
“Kiss me again! Please!”
You had to turned away to hide your laughter, and seeing your little grin made the doctor grin even more as she followed you into your house.
You stopped in the hallway to look through your post, and she moved in front of you, moving your arms so she could stand under them, letting you wrap your arms around her shoulders while she wrapped her around your waist, resting her head against yours.
Finally you set your post down, placing your hands on her back, burying your face into her neck.
“Doctor?” You whispered.
She hummed a little bit.
“I love you too…”
She held you a little tighter, beaming brightly with that little twinkle she had in her eyes every single time she looked at you

violet harmon outfit inspo!! i thought i’d do this bc i know a lot of people want to dress like her but don’t know how. if you have any specific questions about violet and her style, please ask! i’m sure i’d have a lot of fun answering them!!<3
First of all, i think violet’s style is extremely varied. She layers in every single one of her outfits, so i think if your trying to shop like her then think about a full outfit with the piece of clothing instead of it just by itself.
Here is some specific clothing i think she would wear!!
Tops:
Flowy tank tops
Long sleeve tops
Lace undershirts
Vests
Patterned cardigans
Band tees
Flannels
Sweaters (not modern ones)
Bottoms:
Jeans
Cotton leggings
Cargo pants
Shorts (denim or cotton)
Flowy skirts
Dresses:
Floral dresses
Patterned dresses
Slip dresses
Accessories:
Patterned/ coloured tights
Satchel bags (her specific rothco is linked here!)
Hats
Converse shoes
Doc martens
Oxford shoes
Fluffy socks
Scarfs
Pendant necklaces
Hoop earrings
Combat boots
Pearl bracelets
Here is some inspo i found on Pinterest!!
I also think if you want dress like her then you should go to thrift stores and buy second hand clothes!! I personally spend a lot of time on eBay, Depop, and Vinted. If you’re in the USA there’s also Poshmark and Mercari!! For jewellery I’ve found a lot in the style above on Etsy. Here is the link for the seller who sells the necklace above!!
Thanks for reading, hope this helps!!<3

"I've told you before, it's my money. I can do whatever I want with it!"
"But-"
"And no buts! This is my house and if I say we're going out to the fair then that's what we'll do." The young man smiled down at his girlfriend as she pouted up at him in a sulk.
She knew how much he loved this time of year, when all the local businesses would set up stalls around the town square for people to come along and buy their wares from them.
It was like Christmas on steroids, with everything being open until late into the night every day of the week. There were rides, games, food stalls and so many other things to see and do.
“But you know I don't like crowds," she whined. "And there's bound to be lots of drunk people who might try something."
"I promise I won't let anyone take advantage of you while we're here. And besides, everyone knows me. They'd never dare mess with us." He gave her a kiss on the cheek before standing up and pulling her up by the hand. "Come on, let's go."
She sighed as she followed him out of the door and towards the car. He had a point though; he could probably handle any trouble that came his way if it did arise.
Even now, they only needed to look at each other for a few seconds and they both knew exactly what the other one was thinking.
They drove through the town centre and parked up near the edge of the market area.
“We should get some tickets first," he said as they got out of the car. "That way we can ride all the rides without having to wait in line."
"I suppose so," she replied. "But you know I'm not really that fond of rollercoasters or anything too fast."
He laughed as he took her arm and led her over to the entrance gate.
A few moments later, they were inside the grounds and walking amongst the stalls which lined either side of the walkway.
Most of them sold clothes, jewellery and other accessories but there were also plenty of food stands selling hot dogs, chips and candyfloss.
"It looks busy already," he commented as they made their way slowly through the throng of people.
"I think we're going to have to fight our way through. But I think I know a shortcut."
"Oh goodie!" she replied sarcastically. "How exciting! Let's go."
The finally found the ticket booth.
“Two please," he said to the lady behind the counter. "For two adults."
She handed them each a paper ticket as well as a plastic bag containing a pair of wristbands.
He slipped his on and watched as his girlfriend did the same.
Once they'd put their bags back in the boot, he looked around and spotted a small kiosk on the far side of the field.
"Come on," he said excitedly. "Let's go on the merry-go-round."
He grabbed your hand and pulled you along after him as he made his way across the grass.
You could hear the music playing as you walked towards the brightly coloured horses.
When you got to the front you realised there was a queue leading onto the ride itself and several more queues waiting to get on once the previous ones had left.
"I knew i should've bought out the fairground earlier," he muttered.
"Oh hush, it doesn't matter," she whispered sweetly in return. He started pushing the people in front of him aside until he reached the head of the queue.
As soon as his turn arrived, he held your hand tightly as you stepped aboard the ride.
You held on to his waist firmly and gripped tight the metal bars above your head.
Then, the whole thing began moving round and round, faster than you thought possible.
Your boyfriend's hands tightened even further as you squealed with excitement whilst trying desperately not to lose grip of the bar.
After about five minutes of dizzying motion, the ride stopped again and you felt yourself start falling forwards as it slowed right down.
Luckily your boyfriends strong arms kept you from plunging off the seat completely, although they couldn't keep hold of one hand for very long.
“Wheeee!! That was fun," you cried breathlessly. "Let's do another!"
“We should go on one of those little bumper cars next," he suggested with a chuckle. You nodded your agreement eagerly.
They headed towards the exit and went outside where there were dozens upon dozens of these miniature vehicles racing around a large wooden track.
You choose a vehicle and climbed inside. Your boyfriend choose one nearby, hopped in beside you and wrapped his arms around you protectively.
"Hold on baby," he growled softly in your ear.
"Ooohhhhhh!" you screamed in delight as you careered around corners, narrowly missing other cars on numerous occasions.
You bounced up and down against the seat as you spun around, laughing madly, feeling safe in your boyfriends embrace.
Eventually he released his grasp on you suddenly and you fell forward as you tried to grab the steering wheel. The force sent you hurtling off the seat and crashing to the floor, hard enough to knock the wind out of you.
"You alright?" he asked, looking concerned.
"Y-yeah I think so," you stammered between gasps for air.
“I love you," he told you as he leaned down and kissed you tenderly.
After a moment you recovered your senses enough to smile at him and reply.
"I love you too."
A short time later, you were sat back down enjoying yourselves on one of the benches whilst he was feeding you ice cream.
You were giggling like children, holding hands and talking about all the stupid things that happened to you during the day. Eventually, the sun started setting and the crowd started thinning away.
“I know sometimes we argue but it makes me happy to spend time with you," he told you earnestly.
"It does make me happy too," you admitted. "I wouldn't want to change a thing."
"You’re so beautiful," he continued dreamily. "So caring and compassionate too. If you weren't so shy, I could tell you how wonderful you are to me."
You blushed deeply, embarrassed at having been spoken to quite so openly.
But still you felt your heart begin to beat faster as the words sank in deep within your mind. He leant in closer, his voice dropping even lower.
"I've fallen in love with you," he mumbled quietly into your hair. "And I intend to marry you someday."
You froze up instantly and stared wide eyed at him. His face dropped slightly and he cleared his throat awkwardly.
“Well, it’s getting late we better head home," he said with forced jollity. "It's a long drive tomorrow."
You nodded dumbly and allowed him to lead you back towards the car.
Once they were both seated safely inside, he turned towards you with a big grin plastered across his handsome features.
"So..." you murmured uncertainly. "Are you sure...you meant that...?"
His mouth split into a huge grin and he shook his head playfully as he spoke.
"Yes, of course. What kind of idiot do you take me for? Now buckle up, sweetheart, 'cause it's gonna be a bumpy ride!"

I'm still buying DM stuff, I think over it more or less. I bought a 40 years old American collection LP (up here) that I already have in CD (40 years old and American). Is it logical? Of course.
I bought my second Construction Time Again (down here, Made in Sweden) and sold my first one for 12€ (in the middle , Made in West Germany, bye-bye...), because it hasn't got this black sleeve with the lyrics and the paper cover is in really bad condition, though the record is perfect. My 1st selling! Rocks.
I bought an interesting double CD from Taboo Records, seems Hungarian but it is written "Made in Pangea", like the 100 million years old, ancient continent. This is Dream On Budapest!, the Exciter Tour concert in Hungary, 12th of September, 2001. Fans made a short video on the day of the gig about Dave while he's speaking on his cellphone next to the hotel they stayed (it would've been a hard day after the 9/11 attack, leaving his family or friends back home in NYC).
Booklet has beauties, I put one here:
Another Videos 86>98+ DVD (2002) which is double DVD compared to the first edition and the 2nd record has treasures including Condemnation (Paris Mix) official video that was made in Hungary and But Not Tonight's video which song I love somehow, that's why I bought Black Celebration's U.S. edition LP. I have the DVD's 1998 version (scroll down), now could sell it but I need this for the full story: Corbijn finally agreed to put this beauty to the official selection.
First I ordered this double DVD from Antal, I've found it on his shop's website. He went on holiday for whole July and August, so I had to wait until 2nd of September. He was much friendly this time although I didn't buy anything, because he talked me out of it! In fact the DVD has the European bar code on his website, but he has the US version, that I couldnt' have played at home in his opinion. Weird, but I believed him and went home empty-handed.
Than I was searching for it for hours, 22 years old stuff, does it exists in Hungary at all? I found it only at French Amazon. You can bet, after 1,5 months the DVD lost somewhere in Europe, luckily I got back my money after 4-5 e-mails. Without any hope I visited an infamous online used stuff market and I found a piece that was sold already. I didn't know why, but I called the seller by phone, he answered "actually I still have the DVD because I haven't sold it last weekend at the blablabla festival". Wow. On the same day I got it <3
Short report: I have 38 vinyls so far - including a Soulsavers album, 12"-7" together, 5 more singles is coming in couple of weeks. After that I'll sell 3 of mine which are the same pieces but other editions, I prefer British copies if I find somewhere. Also have 14 CDs (with Paper Monsters), it's funny, because I promised earlier that I don't buy one, and actually I need 2 more (Precious and an other edition of Only When I Lose Myself because of its lovely B-side songs: Free and Surrender). 5 DVDs and a cassette and 6 books/magazines (one more is coming by my "dealer"), some pins, shirts, jewelleries and other clothing. Like a teen, OMG. Bizarre. Laugh, I do the same. Happily.
Details (occasionally mixed): #vinyl collection; #non-vinyl collection
And a little fun at the end from @cultureconnoisseurs.

hello! i see you’re open for drabble request, i would like to ask for forest bride where they go on a festival date, yoongi buying kiku anything that fascinates her (even tho she’s not really asking for it) and the people are gushing over them. thank you!
SWEET TRINKETS
Information: Forest Bride Drabble | Yoongi x Kiku | Click for original fic here if you're interested Warnings: none. Author's Note: sorry for the wait, things got really busy! I will be writing the other drabbles sent to me as well, don't worry <3
.・゜゜・ ・゜゜・. .・゜゜・ ・゜゜・.
It was Kiku's first Summer Night festival in the Onyx clan. Merchants from other territories would arrive in the clan with new items, trinkets, food and other goods in order to add interest to the usual routines of their territory. The stalls were vibrant in stalls of all colours. Yun and Nari already lost themselves in the crowd but Yoongi ensured to hold onto her hand.
“Brother’s really not letting go of that hand,” Yun joked. “It might fall off.”
Kiku chuckled as Yoongi only smirked.
Yun pushed Nari gently into the crowd as they rushed to a stall full of rare books.
Kiku and Yoongi padded over to the first stall where the merchant sold embroidered pouches and pieces. A beautiful blue cotton pouch with embroidered honeysuckles caught Kiku’s eye. She brushed her fingers against the soft material.
“It matches you perfectly, madam,” the merchant cheered as he picked up the pouch and brandished it. “Has enough space for all your coins. It can even fit jewellery.”
Kiku grinned. She adored honeysuckle flowers in the summertime, picking them constantly from the forests and filling the stone vases at their house. “It’s very pretty but I’ll keep looking around.” She kept her gaze lingered on the pouch but didn’t want to spend too many coins on little things. Perhaps some clothes or summer fruits may be better.
“Pleasure doing business with you, Master Min,” the merchant bowed.
Kiku looked back curiously to see what Yoongi purchased from the excited and proud merchant. And it was none other than the little pouch. Her cheeks burned. “You didn’t need to do that.”
“You need something to hold all your coins,” Yoongi explained as if it was a smart transaction.
Kiku chuckled, accepting the coin pouch and holding it close to her chest. “Are you trying to spoil me?”
“These markets only happen once a year, we might as well be a little indulgent.”
They walked in front of a silk stall and Kiku noticed a mint green silk dress with delicate gold embroidery that formed into water lilies. She glanced over at Yoongi who was keeping a close eyes. “I’m just looking.”
“If you look too long, who knows my coin will fly.” Yoongi smirked.
Kiku shook her head, brushing her fingers and feeling the soft textures of the embroidery. She bit down her bottom lip but didn’t say anything further. It was mesmerizing. The amount of variety in these stalls were truly majestic.
“You have a clip that matches this,” Yoongi said. “Might go with it.”
“Are you trying to tempt me?” Kiku asked.
“Only stating the facts.” Yoongi crossed his arms over his chest as he sauntered over to the merchant lady selling the silks.
“Let your husband buy it for you, madam, it’s good luck!” The merchant gestured, clearly trying to make a sale instead of actually showcasing the magical properties of this dress.
“We do need good luck.” Yoongi didn’t wait a second before buying the dress.
“Unbelievable.”
Kiku had a permanent smile fixed on her face as she hooked her arm on Yoongis’. They made their way to the food stalls where different fruits were displayed. Kiku saw the red dragon-fruits and pomegranates, quickly taking her own coins and handing them to the merchant. “I’ll buy the food.”
Yoongi chuckled. Perhaps a small light-hearted race had begun now as Kiku now immediately bought them some pork filled buns.
Kiku split one bun for the moment and shared it with Yoongi as they continued walking. Finally, they reached fragrance and bath stall.
This time, Yoongi bought the rose oil that Kiku was eyeing.
“Very helpful for couples this one,” the merchant called out. “Much pleasure if you put on the right places.” They winked.
Yoongi chuckled nervously, cheeks reddening as he cleared his throat. “Thank you.”
Kiku stifled laughter as she continued walking. “Make sure to put it on the right places.”
drabbles are closed now, sorry!

hi guys here is your fun fact of the day from me: as i opened my two towers DVD today i discovered it has a booklet inside advertising official lotr jewellery. i looked up its isbn and its from 2003. so obviously im like huh i wonder when their website went down cause theres no way this website from 20 years ago is still up. i wonder how much this stuff is second-hand. Well it turns out none of that is relevant because the site is still up and still selling things! including a good chunk of the things advertised in this booklet! so for the low low price of six hundred united states dollars you can also own the one ring made of actual solid gold. inflation is a bitch though it used to be THREE hundred. devastating.
im so serious you cwn buy this. i dont know why you would but you can! you can also buy mini replicas of some lotr swords as letter openers which i find very novel
sting letter opener is very funny to me. Anywwy the most important thing i discovered is they also did stuff for when the hobbit trilogy came out (which you can also still buy) the most important information i have though is this:
for $69 USD (each!) you can buy an "authentic functional replica" of bilbo baggins' or gandalf's pipe. this is probably already known among big lotr fans but i only just discovered this and its very funny to me. needed 2 share.

I went to the market today, and it reminded me that the biggest curlural disconnect I've ever experienced on the internet was finding out that Americans and a lot of Northern Europeans think of the farmer's market as this pretentious, expensive place where people go to buy overpriced organic produce from neat, quaint little stalls.
In my experience, you go to the market because things are way cheaper than at the store. You can buy fruit and vegetables for a third of the price, and clothes and jewellery for less than 10 €. The market is where the vendors yell to get your attention, and they let you try the fruit you want to buy (which means the street is littered with fruit stones and rinds), where there are speakers that blast out obnoxious neapolitan music, where everybody speaks dialect and no one uses the formal "you", where you can dig through haphazard piles of second hand clothes to find skirts or dresses for 1€ a pop, where they sell flowers and small farm animals and pots and pans, where you have to know how to haggle (I used to go with my grandmother as a child. I don't think that woman ever paid full price for anything in the 87 years of her life), where the whole town stops to chat and gossip, where children play loudly and old people spend the whole morning.
There's a mix of cultures and languages, and there are people from all walks of life.
It smells of sweat, overripe fruit, salt, and fresh fish.
It's probably the least glamourous or pretentious place I have ever seen.
In my hometown, the market is held on Thursdays on the street where I live, and there’s no better feeling than being woken up by someone yelling "Come on, beautiful ladies! We have fresh tomatoes!"
Thursday has always been my favourite day, purely because of that. One of my earliest memories is tagging along with my grandpa through the stalls, eating black olives from a plastic bag and spitting out the pits.
It's messy, and it's my happy place, and I am honestly sad that a lot of people don't get to experience it.
#Italian things#although I guess this is a thing in one way or another throughout most of the world#I remember almost crying when I went to the market in Northern Italy and they wouldn't even let you touch the fruit!#barbarians the lot of them#(I am kidding but like....)#If I have to read another post or fic where the market is basically reduced to the honey and soap stalls I will scream#forget pinapple on pizza this is the true cultural divide#southern europe

You said you buy all your clothes secondhand, do you recommend any websites where we could buy second hand clothes? I mostly only look at ebay or ragstock, id love to find more shops
In terms of online, I've mostly boughten from poshmark, there can be some good stuff on there every once in a while, you've just gotta get the right keywords in your search.
Though poshmark does have a lot of people who up the price and "over-sell" too much (like specifically buying clothes at thrift stores to list them for a higher price), which misses the whole point of a second-hand thrift site :/
So you've got to be aware of that sort of thing. But I'd say it's a relatively trustworthy site with shipping tracking and being able to make offers is nice.
I've also gotten some stuff from etsy shops, but not clothing, usually jewellery or supplies for making jewellery.
Other than that, I've been fortunate to get quite a few hand-me-downs, and there are a few nice thrift stores in my area.
I don't really get stuff from a variety of places often, and I've also gotten into altering and adding to my clothes a lot more now, which is fun and not as intimidating as I thought it would be :)

Chapter 48
When the matter was settled, she was given half of the silver. During this period, Song was so annoyed that she did not sleep for several days and nights, thinking that she had raised Su Pan'er for so many years for nothing, so she did not go into details.Once the Su family had money, it was a big change.
They spent a lot of money on the house, on buying servants and maids, and on clothes and jewellery for the men and women in the family. The rest of the silver Yao Jinzhi planned to find someone she knew and put it in a money bank to eat the dividends, or start a small business, so that the family could get by, but it turned out that Su Hai had gambling debts in a gambling house and lost it all to others.
Su Hai was already a gambling addict, which is why he was too old to get a wife. The family was too poor to go to the gambling house, so they dared not go there, but just a few people they knew got together to play a few games. Yao Jinzhi sold all the gold jewellery she had bought for herself and her daughter-in-law to make up for the loss. Naturally, she couldn't afford to keep the servants, so she sold them all. Now there is only a granny who keeps the fire burning and cooks, and a little girl who has not yet had her hair cut left, and it looks like she will have to sell them after the New Year too. When Yao Jinzhi saw her second son come back from outside, she felt angry and thought that he must have gone to the gambling house again.
So before Su Hai could even put his hands on a bowl of rice, he was scolded by his mother. The scolding made him irritable and his two nephews were crying in fear. He dropped his chopsticks and said angrily, "I didn't go to the gambling house, I didn't go, I don't have any money to go! When Su Hai became angry, Yao Jinzhi became quiet and picked up her bowl and ate as if nothing had happened.
Seeing her like this, Su Hai's frustration was overwhelming, but he had never been a match for his mother since he was a child. "Mother, I think I saw Pan'er at the East Market today." "Pan'er?" Yao Jinzhi's next reaction was not to ask her daughter, but - "What were you doing in the east of the city? How dare you say you didn't go to the gambling house?" "I really didn't. Dazhi asked me to deliver something for him, and I passed by there. Hey, Mother, didn't you say that Pan'er was sold to a noble lord, how come she is still in Yangzhou?"
Yao Jinzhi was slightly uncomfortable at the mention of her daughter who had been sold, and shouted, "Can't a nobleman be from Yangzhou? Besides, what are you doing mentioning her when she's already been sold?" "I don't know if I'm mistaken, but she doesn't look like she's married to a nobleman, she looks like she's married to a poor family. She's with a man who is good looking, but he doesn't dress as well as I do and seems to be quite poor."
Hearing this, the Su family looked at each other, while Su Datian continued to sip his wine, looking very intoxicated."Drink, drink, drink, you just know how to drink, you can't get by without filling your yellow soup for a day, can you?" Yao Jinzhi was already irritated, and when she caught a glimpse of Su Datian's appearance out of the corner of her eye, she exploded. "You guys say your words, it's none of my business, what's wrong with not letting me have a drink?" Su Datian could not afford to mess with them, so he took a plate of peanuts and avoided them with a bottle of wine in his hand.
After this fuss, the topic of conversation naturally ended in vain, Su Hai also saw that his mother did not want to discuss this matter, so he did not mention it anymore, but his heart was a bit sad.
"You should have left her for me as a daughter-in-law, but you had to sell her."Yao Jinzhi had just sat down when she jumped up from her chair.
"You little bastard, I haven't even looked into your affairs yet, but you are talking about me. I alone spent the silver in the beginning, but it was all lost by you, a loser? I'm telling you, after New Year's Eve, go back to the docks and carry the goods, and if you go to the gambling house again, I'll break your legs!
After the meal, Miao Cui Xiang told Su Jiang that it would be better if the family could split up, and that if they lived like this with his mother, their lives would be shortened by ten years.
Su Jiang did not want to hear such words, although he was also annoyed by his mother, but as a child you must be filial, when your parents are still alive, there can be no family separation, and the oldest one is a bit muddled, but in the end he is his own brother."You married into my family, and you know what my family is like. Although the oldest brother has lost all the silver, there is still this mansion, can't this mansion hold you?"
Miao Cui Xiang suddenly stopped murmuring. After sitting dryly by herself for a while, she came over to Su Jiang: "Do you think what Lao Er said was true or not, could it be that little sister has followed a noble master and is not liked by others, and they have sold her again?" Su Jiang's face instantly darkened: "Don't talk nonsense here, if you don't want to be scolded by mother, then don't mention this." "What's wrong with me mentioning it?" She said with some resentment. But seeing the man's unwillingness to talk to her, Miao Cui Xiang didn't dare to say anything else. --.
On the other hand, Su Hai had lit Yao Jinzhi's fireworks, but it didn't end well.He was escorted by Yao Jinzhi to the docks to help load and unload goods with the dock labourers. Su Hai used to do this kind of work, but he was a three-day fisherman and a two-day sunbather.
The Su family had made a fortune in the last six months, and most of the people at the docks knew about it, but the boy had gotten into trouble and was now back at the docks carrying goods. A labourer called Da Wang, who had told Su Hai to go to the gambling house, came to Su Hai and asked him if he was still going to the gambling house at night. "Fuck you, I don't have any money to go to the gambling house?"
Da Wang gave him an ambiguous wink: "If you don't have any silver, you can borrow it, I'll give you a guarantee ......" "Get lost, get as far away as you can!" Su Hai scolded and gave him another kick, and Da Wang slinked away.
A dark and tall young man came over and frowned at Su Hai, "Hai Zi, you should not hang around with Da Wang, you still don't remember after such a big loss?" When Su Hai thought of what happened before, he wanted to vomit blood, but no one could blame him, he couldn't control his own hands.
But he wouldn't go again, and even if he did, he wouldn't go with Dawang. "Dazhi, you don't need to tell me about this, I know." The young man called Dazhi nodded and patted him on the shoulder, "Don't think too much, keep your feet on the ground and work hard, you will never be short of food."
But Su Hai thought of the silver he had lost and was reluctant to talk to Dazhi about it. The two families used to be neighbours, so who knows if his mother would have thought about it and come to Dazhi to ask him about it, so Su Hai didn't usually talk to Dazhi about his own affairs. Inevitably, he remembered what happened yesterday. "By the way, I think I saw Pan'er at the East Market entrance yesterday ......"
"Pan'er?" Dazhi froze. Su Hai nodded, "I don't know if I was mistaken, but I don't think I was, but this girl's appearance has changed a lot compared to before. It's strange to say, I heard my mother say that Pan'er was bought by a rich lord, but I don't see her dressed well, with a man by her side, and not dressed as well as me, and I don't know ......" He rambled on and on, but Dazhi didn't hear a word of it.
"Pan'er!"Pan'er, who was looking down at the stall picking out the spring couplets, turned her head and saw Xue Dazhi and Su Hai standing not far behind her.
She frowned subconsciously.
Xiang Pu on the side looked around curiously and didn't dare to make a peep.
"It's really you,…… Pan'er." Mostly because the words were a bit artificial, Dazhi said it with extra shortness, and couldn't help but scratch his head as he said it.Pan'er then knew that he must have lied. It was true that Su Hai had not meant what he said that day, but he had meant what he heard.
For several days in a row, every morning, Dazhi would go halfway around Yangzhou to the east market entrance to see if he could run into Pan'er. Unfortunately, he didn't dare to come forward at this time. For several days in a row, he found that Pan'er would come here every morning to buy something, so today he dragged Dazhi up with him and waited stiffly for Pan'er. "Hai Zi, you are not looking for Pan Er to say something, why don't you say it?" When he saw Pan'er looking at him, Dazhi panicked and bumped Su Hai with his elbow.
Su Hai wanted to curse in his heart, he didn't know who had found Pan'er to talk to or who wanted to know if Pan'er was doing well now.The two families were neighbours, and Xue Dazhi had loved Pan'er since she was a child, but unfortunately Pan'er was sent to Zhao Wu's home by Yao Jinzhi at the age of eight.
On the surface it was called foster care, but in reality the adults knew what it was for, but Dazhi was only a half-grown boy at the time, so he didn't know what it meant, and just assumed that Pan'er was really being fostered by a relative.
After all, the Su family's house was not very big and there was no spare room for Pan'er, and he knew it. So after that he still went to see Pan'er every now and then. It was not until later, when he was older, that he understood but did not give up, that the two of them kept seeing each other, but it was just the relationship between the neighbour's son and the neighbour's daughter.
It was only when he found out from his mother that the Xue family had sold Pan'er and made a fortune that he was completely dumbfounded. In his mind, he worked hard to save up enough silver so that he could talk to Aunt Yao about marrying Pan'er. In Xue Dazhi's opinion, he still couldn't believe that Aunt Yao would sell her daughter and that the Su family was that starved for silver.
Unfortunately, before he could save up enough money, she disappeared. After all, in the eyes of the common people, no one who is a concubine can lead a good life, and they are always scolded by the first wife. If Pan'er was doing well, he naturally wished her well, even though it would make him feel bad. If she is not doing well ......
In the end, they grew up together, Su Hai also does not want to refute the face of Dazhi in front of people, besides he also wants to know how Pan'er is doing now.
"That what …… saw you here a few days ago, called you and you ignored me, not that I said, how I am also your second brother, why do you not respond when called?" The words have not yet been said, Su Hai is back to his usual demeanor.
Pan'er had never liked this second brother, so she mentally rolled her eyes but said, "I didn't hear you.""You didn't hear me, or you just don't want to talk to me? What, you don't even recognize your own brother after you've married a noble master?" Seeing that Su Hai was becoming more and more unlikeable, Dazhi pushed him aside and said, "Pan'er, don't pay any attention to Su Hai, he is just unforgiving. We came to look for you, nothing more, we just want to know if you are doing well?"
Looking at the tall, dark-skinned youth in front of her, Pan'er's emotions rose and fell for a moment. She was not the real Su Pan'er, she was the Empress Dowager Yi'an, but she had not forgotten this childhood friend she had grown up with. 'Su Pan'er' hadn't forgotten either, Pan'er felt that this young body still had some effect on her true self, as the Empress Dowager of Yi'an, her mood shouldn't rise and fall like this after seeing this person, but now it was precisely like this.
" Big Brother Zhi ……" The moment the address was uttered, Pan'er froze for a moment."Pan'er!" Dazhi was thrilled to see that Pan'er was still calling himself like he used to.
Pan'er took a deep breath and smiled, "I'm doing quite well now, I'm already married too ……"As he was talking, the Crown Prince walked out from the side with Zhang Laishun in tow. "This is-"
Pan'er was subconsciously a little confused, with the feeling of being caught by her husband in the act of seeing her old sweetheart, but she quickly reacted.
"Brother Zong, this is my former neighbour, and this is my second brother," after answering the prince, she busied herself with adding to Dazhi and Su Hai, "Second brother, brother Dazhi, I'm doing quite well, and this is my …… husband, who works as a bookkeeper for someone. "
"You are not bought ...... by the noble lord," Dazhi bumped Su Hai and cut him off. "Just get on with your life, we have things to do, so we will leave first. Where are you staying now, I'll come to see you some day with Haizi I?" "This ......" Pan'er subconsciously glanced at the prince, and seeing that he didn't say anything else, she gave Xue Dazhi the address of where she was currently staying.
"We don't know how long we'll be able to stay here, we'll probably have to leave after the year." Dazhi nodded and hurriedly dragged Su Hai away. When the two men had gone, Pan Er looked to the Prince. "I didn't expect to run into them at this, my second brother he's a bit of a good-for-nothing, so I told him that you're a bookkeeper ......, Third Master." This was also a statement that came to Pan'er's mind on a whim, but the prince also looked quite like a down and out scholar working as a bookkeeper for someone in this outfit.
That was not what the prince was concerned about."Who is that Brother Dazhi?"
Pan'er always felt that the Prince's voice was a bit strange, but looking at his expression it seemed quite normal, so she didn't have time to think too much about it and replied, "He's the eldest son of the Su family's neighbour, the Xue family, Xue Dazhi, and because the two families are close, he's been like a brother to me since he was a child, more like a brother than my second brother anyway."
An older brother? The prince wordlessly chewed on the words and did not speak, just glanced at Pan'er. He had just gone to the Four Treasures shop to look at the pens and ink, and when Pan'er saw a shop selling lanterns and spring scrolls, he said he would buy two red lanterns to hang. When he came out of the shop, he saw two more men in front of Pan'er.
The way Xue Dazhi looked at Pan'er, the prince did not feel that he looked at her like a brother would.
A childhood friend?
--After this incident, they went back without further ado. Pan'er was a bit worried about whether Su's family would come looking for her, but luckily she had a chance to say that the Prince worked as a bookkeeper in a rich family's house, and that made sense. She wasn't sure if Su's family would come looking for her, but she knew Xue Dazhi would. When she was sold, Xue Dazhi had gone to the countryside and they hadn't seen each other since then, even if it was a neighbourhood brother who had cared for her since she was a child and would be concerned about how she was getting on. The two of them have not seen each other since then, and even if they had grown up caring for each other, they would still be concerned about how she was doing.
Xue Dazhi is such a character, thick, honest and persevering, also known as a bit of a stickler, he will certainly try every possible way to find out if she is living a good life after 'she was sold'.
" Su Pan'er" did not understand, and it was only later that Empress Dowager Yi'an understood that she and Dazhi were not only childhood friends, but also a little bit in love with each other. It was only then that she was too young to realize it, and she was forced to separate, and as time passed, everything faded.
But Pan'er had not missed the way Xue Dazhi had looked at her. What a headache! If the prince knew about this ...... "What's on your mind?"
Such a question popped up next to her suddenly, and Pan'er turned her head subconsciously to see the prince's face."I was thinking about having someone hang the lanterns I bought," she said, and stood up, "Master, I'll go take a look, it's festive to hang them earlier."
Pan'er's whole person was just short of writing a few big words 'I am very faint-hearted', so much so that the prince looked at her back for a long time.
When Pan'er went out she realised that she had done nothing wrong in the first place, so why should she be guilty?
But it was too late to do anything about it. Pan'er still had to think of a way to persuade the prince to accompany her in a play, so that she could deal with Dazhi and Su's family.
To show that she was not at all faint-hearted, Pan'er proceeded with great vigour. The outside lanterns were left to the guards to hang, while she called Zhang Laishun and Xiangpu to help with the inside lanterns, while she directed from below. Xiang Pu held the ladder while Zhang Laishun climbed up to it trembling. How long had it been since he had done this kind of work? He was afraid that he would fall if he was not careful. But with Su Feng Yi watching from below and the Prince sitting in the room, he had no choice but to go up. "Master Feng Yi, have you seen it yet?" In fact, Fang Laishun had already hung the lantern, but Pan'er said it was a little short.
It was because of this statement that the two of them wrangled for half a day to get the meaning right. It turns out that there is a taboo in Yangzhou not to say unlucky words in the waxing moon, especially when putting up the spring couplets and hanging the lanterns, not to say that they are crooked and not to say that they are low, but to say that they are up. It's a good practice to say something auspicious, but if it's not a good placements, it's a better solution to say something vague.
So when Zhang Laishun hung the lantern crooked, Pan'er didn't say it's crooked, he said it's a bit worse. But Zhang Laishun doesn't understand the difference, what exactly is the difference?"Okay, very good." Hearing this, Zhang Laishun sighed with relief and climbed down from the ladder with shaky legs.
Pan'er entered the room and said to the prince with a smile, "Master, just now the concubine prepared the couplet and the fortune words, but thought that your writing was so good, so it would be unbecoming to let others take over the door, so why don't you write some for me?" The former Emperor Jianping loved to write fortune characters and reward them, which is also called giving blessings. "You need red paper to write spring couplets and fortune characters."
"The red paper was bought by this concubine." She told Qing Dai to go and bring the red paper, and then she dragged the Prince to the study with her affection. When she arrived at the study, she was very attentive, laying out paper and preparing ink, and even had a brush ready, waiting for the prince to put pen to paper. There were four gates in the house, the main gate, the left and right corner gates and the back gate, plus the main courtyard gate, which meant that at least five large ones had to be written. There was also the kitchen and barn, which was an essential place to put up the spring couplets for the New Year, signifying wealth and prosperity, so two smaller ones were needed.
The more the merrier, so to speak. At this point, Pan'er felt that it was too much to write, so how could she ask the Prince to do such a task? However, she had already decided to do so, so she had to put her head down. So she didn't dare to say how many, but just wrote a few. Pan'er was responsible for cutting the paper, and the Prince was responsible for writing them. By the time she finished cutting the paper with Qing Dai's help, she was also exhausted. It was rather uncomfortable to see the Prince recklessly wielding his problems. But she dared not say anything, who told her to be weak-minded and to ask for help. The prince wrote a dozen or so fortune words, which relieved Pan'er. When the prince stopped writing and reached out for a handkerchief to wipe his hands, she handed over the one she had prepared in advance. It was no different from the usual way Zhang Laishun and his team served the Prince. When they got it, they had to pretend to look at it and say a few kind words of praise. But the Prince's writing was really good too. Although Pan'er didn't like practising calligraphy, she had seen many masterpieces by famous writers and knew that the Prince's pen and ink could be considered to be of the upper class.
She did not know that after she and the Prince had left Yangzhou, many people came to see the Spring Festival couplets outside the door, but in the end they were written on paper and could not withstand the wind and the sun.
By the time they had finished, it was noon. At lunchtime, Pan'er was still extremely attentive, almost treating the Prince like an ancestor. The prince, who had been upset, was amused by her behaviour, and when Pan'er made a show of talking to him, he gave her a puzzled look. "I want to talk to you about something. I ran into my second brother in the morning, and I was afraid that he would come looking for me, so I lied and said that Your Highness was working as a bookkeeper ......"
After listening to Pan'er stumble over her words, the prince said, "You mean if they come looking for you, it's time for me to accompany you in a play?" Pan'er nodded his head repeatedly. "Is it for Brother Dazhi, or for your second brother?" She hadn't been prepared for him to ask that and froze.

Perhaps - if anyone is reading this - you might wonder what on earth could keep me so busy, while not working, that I haven’t posted for weeks? Surprisingly, a lot! Visitors, Greek school, wandering around Athens.
It’s almost seven weeks since we made the journey from Marrakech to Essaouira and though mentioned in the previous post, there’s much more to recount.
The journey of a couple of hours was extended by our interesting stops. Where we didn’t stop was as interesting; villages where horse-drawn taxis were the main form of local transport and early model cars provided longer distance travel. Men - we didn’t see many women in public spaces - were often dressed in traditional robes. The ‘Universal Day of the Donkey’ should be declared for the countless donkeys we saw carting, pulling, carrying, standing around. I think the donkey holds economies together in some parts of the world….. We’d been told that we’d see goats in Argan trees but there was no evidence of that so perhaps it’s the wrong season or it’s a myth?!
Essaouira is famous for it’s connection to the hippie trail that brought famous folk like Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones, to the town and the reminders of that are everywhere. Orson Welles has a square named after him in memory of both his love of Morocco and filming of “Othello” on and around Essaouira’s walls and fortress (“Game of Thrones” also filmed an episode there apparently).
G swam in the Atlantic Ocean on our first day in Essaouira which, after the Meditteranean, was bracing. You’ll see a photo below of G and Lucien having a lovely time on the shore.
Essaouira is a significant fishing port, bringing in large catches of sardines and anchovies that are shipped to Spain and Portugal. The boats, squashed together in the harbour every day, are painted blue which apparently attracts sardines. It’s possible to walk amongst the fishermen as they bring in their catches and, by walking further along the port, seeing the larger boats bringing in their nets. All along the quay, fishermen sell their catch and, if you wish, you can buy the seafood you’d like and have it cooked on an open grill back at the entry to the port. Lucien (aged 6.5) is a keen fisherman who was fascinated by everything that was happening, especially the fish being sold and the nets being winched off and on the big boats.
Away from the port, within the walls of the medina, craftspeople make and sell their wares. Like so much of Moroccan culture there’s great delight in the hidden. Behind a blank door you might find a beautiful riad or a hammam; a wooden box requires a particular twist, turn or trick to open it. I am beguiled by the pride and skill of Moroccan artisans and craftspeople and their delight when their work is appreciated.
We ate some wonderful meals with J, J & the boys especially at a restaurant where we lolled about on divans listening to the owner’s favourite tunes of the ‘60s and ‘70s!
The Essaouira bazaar, smaller but as fascinating as Marrakech, revealed everything from woven goods, clothing, second hand everything-you-can-want-or-need, jewellery, Berber crafts (astounding), birds, food, rugs, spices, scents to buy by the gram (I bought amber and orange blossom). A sensory dictionary.
On our final day, G, J, J and the boys decided that a camel ride along the beach was in order and what a marvellous time they had! I spent a blissful hour or so alone at the riad, horses being more my thing!
There is so much more to write about Morocco but this probably isn’t the place. My memories will live on through photographs and my recollections will bring me great joy for as long as I’m around to remember. I hope we return some day…..
Pics by me, G & J
