You were cleaning up the kitchen after making dinner. Logan was supposed to be home over an hour ago, she was working as a bouncer at a local bar. The shower wasn’t the only thing wet at that moment.

Additionally, she fears her lifestyle will get you hurt, something that haunts her nightmares. But after seeing your beautiful bright smile after she popped the question there was no doubt in her mind she needed you as her wife. 

A big wedding was never what either of you wanted. If she was being honest, Female! Logan would have been happy with just eloping, but you wanted to do something small and she could never say no to you. 

On a warm day in spring, the two of you finally wed, the other residents of the mansion applauding the two of you. It was a small crowd, only a few select friends, but it couldn’t have felt more perfect for the two of you.

what makes me sad about them: canon, obvs. that we don't get to see more of their interactions. that Gabby gets elided into the implication of her death, and Pierce plays it as a morbid joke to Logan.

Basement Arc #4

It's time to talk about how the basement arc ends. The answer isn’t pretty. It ends in attempted suicide. Again. Honestly how else can it end? So far Sabretooth has:

sought help for his psychological breakdown and trauma

been denied treatment/medication

told he’s weak for needing treatment beyond talk therapy

locked in the basement, forced into restraints

treated like a sub-human

*Attacked and lobotomized

treated like an actual animal on a leash

been deliberately re-traumatized with accusations of past deeds

the only person who showed him any tentative trust or affection was rejected by her peers because of it

So yeah. Sabretooth breaks out of his prison in the X-mansion and attempts suicide by cop/suicide by X-men. Let’s see how that goes down.

It starts in Uncanny X-Men #328 with professor Xavier telling a heavily bound and restrained Sabretooth that Xavier feels he’s beyond help, and that he’s giving up trying to help him.

Despite his heavy restraints, Bishop is still waiting outside-- literally waiting for a reason to shoot Sabretooth.

And what exactly was the reason that caused Xavier to finally lose faith and give up? Sabretooth imagined killing and eating some deer in the fake digital jungle environment that Xavier was keeping him in. An environment that he specifically said he didn’t relate to and didn’t want to be in. And not even real deer. Not even real fake deer. Imaginary fake deer. Sabretooth imagined killing and eating some deer, and Professor Xavier decided that meant he was beyond redemption.

Xavier excuses Magento’s crimes as resulting from his trauma, but completely fails to acknowledge that Victor’s trauma played any part in his actions or mental illness.

Xavier, in front of Sabretooth, calls Valerie Cooper and says he’s done all he can and is turning Sabretooth over to the government.

Then Tabitha shows up where they have Sabretooth restrained, accuses him of lying to her, and slaps him. What he’s supposed to have lied about is not made clear. Its entirely possible she doesn’t even know, as this is directly after the ‘intervention’ bullied her into refusing to be kind to him. Betsy is there, egging her on.

After being slapped, Sabretooth taunts Tabitha and gets under her skin enough to get her to attack him-- destroying the restraints around him. He thanks her for helping him escape, and then Psylocke immediately attacks him. Psylocke tells Tabitha to go, but she doesn’t.

Sabretooth and Psylocke fight, and she tries to pacify him with her psionic knife, giving him the pacifying ‘glow’ that he had been trying to get the psychics in the house to give him the entire time. But it doesn’t work, apparently because Wolverine’s lobotomy cured him of.

Sabretooth carves a hole in the wall and flees the mansion without hurting Tabitha.

Sabretooth Special (1996), Sabretooth flees into the sewers, knowing the X-men are coming after him, and considering himself ‘prey’.

Caliban catches Sabretooth, and they fight. Sabretooth tries to convince Caliban to try to kill him.

After beating Caliban, Sabretooth goes back to his Manhattan safehouse. The X-men guess that he may go there and they break in.

I think this is the thing that somehow galls me above all else. The X-men are in Sabretooth’s apartment. His tidy apartment full of books, art and a bonsai tree. And Jean says this. “What are you implying, Scott, that Creed would escape from the mansion-- only to hide from us by acting like a regular human being? He can’t become civilized anymore than you or I could pretend to be savages!”

In fact this pisses Sabretooth in the comic off so much that he attacks them immediately, despite having been hiding and listening. He tells them to get out of his home.

Sabretooth fights with the X-men and he tells them he’s not going back. Never. He takes a hostage and escapes into the subway. He fights with Beast, taunts him, and insists, unconvincingly, that he never wanted help from the X-men. He fights with Angel on the rooftop and wounds him.

Sabretooth squares off with Jean in the subway and puts a fine point on the events of the last few months. “It wasn’t supposed to be this way, was it? Nooo--I was gonna shove down the animal inside a’me ‘cause I wanted to, right? ‘Cause all you X-men showed me it would be the right thing to do! Look inside a’me, Jeannie-- find out why I couldn’t do what Xavier wanted me to. See why I ain’t never gonna be man enough t’beat back the burning inside a’me… the way Logan does every single day of his lousy life.” To which Jean responds by calling him garbage.

He squares off with the X-men again, and in case you thought I was exaggerating on the ‘suicide by cop’ thing, Cyclops calls him out on it.

In fact, he asks Cyclops if he’s ever seen the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Then Cyplops lays him out-- and Val Cooper’s tactical team hamburger him with bullets, pronounce him dead, and take him away to force him to be in X-factor. I guess I’m gonna talk about X-factor later.

A Walk Through Hell #10 somehow gets even more disturbing as we’re shown some of McGregor’s past as he was abused and set up as a suicide. The horror that Garth Ennis, Goran Sudžuka, Ive Svorcina, and Rob Steen keep exploring in this series keeps getting more personal and seemingly has no limit to its depth.

Amazing Spider-Man #22 concludes (mostly) the “Hunted” arc as Kraven continues to try to convince Spider-Man that he’s a killer and to finally put Kraven out of his misery. It’s incredibly messed up logic, but Nick Spencer, Humberto Ramos, Victor Olazaba, Edgar Delgado, Erick Arciniega, and Joe Caramagna make it interesting. You could consider this end anti-climactic, especially after how long this has been, but I get the feeling we’ll be dealing with the ramifications for a while to come.

Amber Blake #3 takes an interesting turn as an undercover operation into a modelling agency reveals that Amber’s childhood friend Amanda is still alive. The level of intrigue and twists in this story just keeps escalating, matching the density of the layouts and art from Butch Guice, Mike Perkins, and Dan Brown.

Angel #1 is incredible. Possibly even better than the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and that has set a ridiculously high bar. Bryan Edward Hill, Gleb Melnikov, Gabriel Cassata, and Ed Dukeshire embrace the darker, moodier feel of Angel consistent with the different atmosphere that was present in the television series, while diving deep into building up his dark past and conflicted future. There’s a lot that is new to this interpretation, which just makes it more intriguing. And the art from Melnikov and Cassata is gorgeous.

Ascender #2 advances the vamps’ plan to eradicate the remaining technology in the universe, as Andy is reunited with Bandit, and the vamps come to threaten him and his family. This remains an interesting new take on the Descender world from Jeff Lemire, Dustin Nguyen, and Steve Wands as we see more of what’s happened since the end of that series.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #1 is an interesting debut from Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, FCO Plascencia, and Tom Napolitano. On its surface, it’s an “Old Man Bruce” story, as a previously comatose Bruce awakens in a dark and strange future. But this existence is weird and unreliable. Especially as Bruce awakens in a fiction at first, being told that he’s in Arkham and that all of his villains and time as Batman were fever dreams cooked up by a fractured mind. This may well be the best art ever from Capullo, Glapion, and Plascencia.

Black Science #40 shows that the story still has some surprises in store as it rockets towards the end. Also some ridiculous jokes. Matteo Scalera and Moreno Dinisio continue to inventive as hell with the art.

Coda #12 is the explosive, brilliant conclusion to what has been on the best series of this year and last. Si Spurrier, Matías Bergara, Michael Doig, and Jim Campbell have delivered some stunning flights of imagination, tapping into some highly inventive nihilistic fantasy, presenting the final battle battle this issue, and, man, does it stick the landing. Phenomenal storytelling all around.

Daredevil #6 begins “No Devils, Only God” in a New York City without Daredevil. Lalit Kumar Sharma, Jay Leisten, and Java Tartaglia come on for art duties for this arc and it’s an interesting shift. Sharma’s style reminds me a bit of Klaus Janson’s, but without the heavy inks and shadows.

Detective Comics Annual #2 heads into Year Two territory as we get a new Reaper from Peter J. Tomasi, Travis Moore, Max Raynor, Tamra Bonvillain, Nick Filardi, and Rob Leigh. This is a nice use of the annual format, giving us a satisfying single issue story setting up a possible future arc.

The Forgotten Queen #4 brings an end to this excellent series exploring the history of Vexana, War-Monger, from Tini Howard, Amilcar Pinna, Ulises Arreola, and Jeff Powell. Very interesting depth added to the character and interesting hints as to what more might be coming, hopefully.

Hellboy vs. Lobster Johnson: Ring of Death elaborates further on Hellboy’s time in Mexico making wrestling movies in a pair of tales from Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson, Mike Norton, Paul Grist, Dave Stewart, Bill Crabtree, and Clem Robins. Seeing a presentation of the movie Hellboy starred in is a real treat.

Immortal Hulk #18 leans hard into the body horror aspect of the series, debuting both Betty’s full form as this new Harpy and in the Abomination. Joe Bennett, Ruy José, and Paul Mounts just nail this perfectly.

Killer Groove #1 is a great first issue from Ollie Masters, Eoin Marron, Jordie Bellaire, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. It’s a taut crime drama mixing a never-was musician with the potential of life as a hitman, as he lucks into a kill during a chance encounter. Great art from Marron and Bellaire.

The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #3 advances the alien plot, sending Kamala and her parents off to Saffa to supposedly fulfill the role of their Destined One, saving the planet again. Saladin Ahmed, Minkyu Jung, Juan Vlasco, Ian Herring, and Joe Caramagna are doing some interesting world-building here, and ensuring that nothing is quite what it seems.

Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #5 is the beautiful conclusion to what has been a brilliant series from Kieron Gillen, Caspar Wijngaard, Mary Safro, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. It’s been a sequel, satire, criticism, and repudiation of Watchmen, but it’s also been an interesting mediation on “being better” while coming to terms with the nature of reality and learning to deal with the human element.

Queen of Bad Dreams #2 gets more into the grit of IJ Wei’s investigation into the escaped figment, delivering some great police procedural stuff. The artwork from Jordi Pérez and Dearbhla Kelly is wonderful. Reminding me a lot of some of the work from John Watkiss, particularly during a very impressive action sequence.

She Said Destroy #1 is an intriguing science fantasy debut from Joe Corallo, Liana Kangas, Rebecca Nalty, and Melanie Ujimori. It taps into Celtic mythology, presenting a war between Brigid and the Morrigan, but also appears to be telling a coming of age story with some members of the Morrigan’s flock as they try to combat Brigid’s oppression.

Star Wars #108 is essentially another one-shot in the 80th anniversary of Marvel celebration, with Matthew Rosenberg and a murderers’ row of new and old Star Wars artists delivering a tale set in the old Marvel continuity. While you’ll get more out of it if you’re familiar with the original series, with familiar faces like Valance Hunter, Domina Tagge, and Jaxxon, but it still works well on its own without having any foreknowledge of previous events.

Stranger Things: Six #1 begins another prequel mini-series, this time introducing us to “Six” and looking into the experiments going on at the Hawkins Labs, from Jody Houser, Edgar Salazar, Keith Champagne, Marissa Louise, and Nate Piekos. I quite liked the first one that served as a view into the terror that Will went through during season one, but this one looks like it’ll be breaking some new ground. Very interested to see more of what happened earlier.

Superman: Leviathan Rising Special #1 is a tease for Event Leviathan, the next turn in the Superman series, the forthcoming Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen minis, and the upcoming Supergirl arc once she returns to Earth, but it also manages to tell a fairly entertaining story in its own right as Talia al Ghul kidnaps Clark Kent.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #94 continues “City at War” as everything gets nastier and dirtier, and we still haven’t had a full-on incendiary spark yet to ignite even larger warfare. Dave Wachter and Ronda Pattison deliver some incredible artwork. Splinter is very chilling in this one.

Thor #13 will make you care about Cul Borson. At least, a little bit. Maybe. Jason Aaron, Mike del Mundo, Marco D’Alfonso, and Joe Sabino deliver on another single issue story broadening the bits and pieces of the War of the Realms.

Transformers #6 takes a break from the ongoing narrative and gives us a look into the past friendship between Megatron and Orion Pax, from Brian Ruckley, Beth McGuire-Smith, and Tom B. Long. There are some interesting parallels between Megatron’s observations and the drifting apart of these two old friends.

Wolverine: The Long Night #5 concludes this adaptation of the podcast of the same name from Benjamin Percy, Marcio Takara, Matt Milla, and Joe Caramagna. This has been a mature, psychological thriller amidst all of the violence and darkness, with this final chapter delivering more twists even as it brings the answers.

Visual Aid: It's been a month since the accident

If anyone knows any of Butch’s videos that have relevant DP info that I might have missed in my depression hiatus, just let me know and I’ll transcribe them.

Hey Hartfans, Butch Hartman here, so glad you guys are here with me. Danny Phantom! I think you've heard of that show, if you're watching Butch Hartman channel, I think you've heard of Danny Phantom. Alright, so Danny Phantom: very, very popular show of mine that, for some reason, keeps living on. And I am so excited that you guys are such fans of the show. I've done Fairly Odd Parents, I've done T.U.F.F. Puppy, I've done Bunsen is a Beast, but Danny Phantom is by far and away the show that gets the most response of anything I've ever done, and so I have all of you to thank for that. And so, I want to explore something in this video that a lot of people have been sort of asking me about. It's find of a neat idea, and I thought I would just kinda delve into it a little bit here and let's see what you guys think of it.

In the first episode of Danny Phantom, in the pilot, uh, called Mystery Meat, Danny and Sam and Tucker are standing around and Danny has a line of dialogue

Danny: It's been a month since the accident, and I still barely have any control.

In that line, you're like, "it's been a month since the accident"? You know, if you go back to the theme song of Danny Phantom "Young Danny Fenton he was just 14". Yes, it's "young" not "yo", we talked about that in other videos. "Young Danny Fenton he was just 14/When his parents built a very strange machine" all that stuff, you know the whole theme son, right?

So, anyway, um, there's the whole Danny Phantom theme song, there's the fact that Danny has snow white hair, glowing green eyes, he can walk through walls, disappear, and fly. And, you know, all that in the theme song seems to have just happened to him. Like he got exposed to the ghost plasma DNA is, it mixed with his DNA, he's half ghost, and then he, he says it's been a month since the accident. What happened to Danny between the Fenton Portal accident, and the Mystery Meat episode? There's a whole month in there. That's four weeks, that's thirty days! Unless it's, like, January, that's thirty-one days. That's a- there's a lo- February's twenty-eight days, there's - ok. All kinds of days where things could have happened to Danny in that time span, so what could have happened to Danny Fenton in that month?

Let's talk. That's why we're here.

So let's think about this. Maybe it goes something like this. Maybe ectoplasmic rays exposed Danny to the radiation - to the ectoplasm, right? So this is, is ghost portal energy coming out, cause Danny actually activated the Ghost Portal, Jack Fenton's device, full-sized actually. Or, he had tried the device in college with a, uh, a much smaller version. There's where Vlad Plasmius got exposed and that was about eighteen years before Danny was even born. So, years later, when Danny's fourteen, Jack's experimenting with a huge, giant version of the portal, and it exposes Danny to these rays. And so that alters his DNA, I - think about that. There's a lot of, you know, stories in comic books where characters get their DNA altered by radioactivity, or cosmic rays, or something. Like Captain America got a super-soldier formula. It was injected in him and, boom, he was super. Wow! Spider-man gets bitten by a radioactive spider and suddenly has all the powers of a spider. I've that. I put a spider on a microwave once, and it bit me, and all it did was itch. I didn't put a spider in a microwave - don't think I did. How would you even get a radioactive spider to bite you in the first place? And then it gives you its powers - it makes no sense! And then, Spider-man has gloves on! His hands are sticky, but he wears gloves and climbs walls? I just don't - it's, it's all, it's all superhero logic, right

So, Spider-man, ad then, you know, the one that always made sense to me was the Incredible Hulk. That one, what? That makes sense? Exactly, right? But that one made sense to me. Like, Bruce Banner gets exposed to the rays from a gamma bomb. It explodes and just bathes his body in radiation. I'm thinking, ok, I can get behind that one because his entire body got irradiated with this, this energy, and then it just alters his DNA so much when he gets angry, he turns into this giant monster. I could kind of get behind that one. But the other ones you're like, it's just comic book logic, it's a lot of fun.

So Danny Phantom is sort of the same thing. It's kind of comic book, superhero logic. His DNA gets altered and, you know, it, is it - now if my DNA got altered, I'd probably be a pile of goo on the floor. That's probably what would happen. I mean, your body is so intricately designed that messing with one little thing would probably screw it up completely.

But let's go back. So Danny is exposed to this radiation, right? In the theme song he wakes up, he has snow white hair and glowing green eyes. But, like, it - does he feel ok? I mean, is his body kind of smoldering? I mean, are his clothes torn? So I think it didn't just alter his DNA, I think it sort of altered his entire, um, um, the way he perceived him. The way humans, the way light perceives him. For some reason, Danny's cells are now irradiated, and they're changed, and they're different. And so his cells don't retain light the same way. So that's why he can turn invisible. As well, his cells are able to go from the positive spectrum of light into the negative spectrum of light, which is kind of deep. Hidden deep. Should I bring the ukulele out again?

All right, so now, so Danny's cells now, I would imagine what would Danny's, when he first wakes up I think he's really, I think he's hurting. I think he's been exposed to this energy. I'm sure he's burned a little bit. I'm sure, like... you know, I would think, I don't want to make this too graphic, but I'm sure Danny's been, like, kind of fried from this energy, and I think his body has to kind of repair itself. So I would imagine he kind of wakes up, he's at the bottom of the, of the floor of this, of, of the Fenton Portal. His hair is singed, his face is probably singed, he's probably... feeling the energy inside of him, and I think he feels maybe almost like he's burning from the inside. Like he's been in a microwave. So all of his cells are now having to find,  kind of having to reform themselves and, and regroup, and - because your body's designed to heal itself. I mean, I know, like, Wolverine has this amazing healing ability. You know, like, when you cut yourself or you get a scrape or something, your scrape will heal? I mean, your body is designed to heal. So Danny's body is struggling to heal itself. And, so, he's pulling himself back together, pull himself back together.

There's great sequence in um, the comic book miniseries Watchmen, written by the great Alan Moore, where Dr. Manhattan is just this normal scientist, and he gets put into a particle accelerator chamber, but it's locked and he can't get out, and uh, the experiment's gonna happen, so his body basically gets pulled apart uh, um, molecularly gets ripped apart and he's just disintegrated. But as the days and weeks go by in the, uh, science facility, people see a skeleton appear in the hallway. And then they see a nervous system appear, and they see this and this and this a bit, they start seeing part of a human body appear out of nowhere until, one day, out of nowhere, Dr. Manhattan is able to reassemble himself and he uses the energy that tore him apart to use it as his power, and I think that's what happens with Danny. Danny probably got so damaged by the Fenton Portal accident that he had to pull his body back together. I would imagine his, his cells and his DNA, even his consciousness are all kind of separated and he probably has to pull himself back together, I think in that month, between the Fenton Portal accident and Mystery Meat, when Danny finally becomes a hero, I think Danny's really having to pull himself together and become a human being again. And really try to , uh, just keep his body together. We kind of played with this idea, uh, in the episode D-Stabilized with Dani, the young girl Dani Fenton, D-A-N-I, Dani Fenton. She is a destabilized version of Danny's DNA because she can't hold herself together. Vlad Plasmius could never recreate that experiment perfectly.

So I think Danny after the, after the Fenton Portal accident, that month is just Danny trying to pull himself back together, learn how to be a human being again, and also he's got these amazing powers that he's just trying to get the hang of, and I think the only ones that can help him are Sam and Tucker, his closest friends. I would imagine there's a sequence where Danny's probably in an alley somewhere, and I think Sam and Tucker have to bring him food because he can't go out in public cause he looks kind of half-human, half-ghost, um, and suddenly he probably starts floating off the ground. Like, for no reason. Probably because his body's becoming lighter than air. Like his cells don't have the same density that they used to have because he's half-human, half-ghost now. So, I think his cells make his body lighter than normal, that's why he can fly. Also, his molecules wouldn't be the same either. His molecules would not be as close together as most uh, most human beings' molecules. Or I think it would have separated a little bit. Uh, he could probably control that, which is why he can slip through walls. He can slip through the molecules of the walls, allowing his molecules to slip in between them.

So I think there's a lot of emotional stuff and physical stuff you'd really have to get his mind around. I mean, what if you suddenly started lifting off the ground? And didn't know how to control it? Would you just keep going and going and going? I think tucker would devise a way to train Danny as to how to help him fly and, and maintain his powers.

So I think that month in between the accident and the Lunch Lady episode, uh, Mystery Meat, I think it's spent with Danny trying to retain his humanity, learning his powers, and then Sam and Tucker helping to train him how to use his powers. How to train - train him for flight, train him for going through walls, train him for, um, you know, turning invisible and things like that.

And think about it, so Danny really hasn't been attacked by any ghosts at this time and I think, like any good superhero, he needs time to train just a little bit. It's almost like when Peter Parker discovered he was Spider-man, you know, he had to train a little bit, then he started fighting villains. And the villains come out of the woodwork. I think the same with Danny Phantom. Danny has to get his powers together, get himself pulled back into reality, and then I think the villains start showing up. Again, that's comic book logic, we probably play with that a little it. And it might be kind of cool to actually get Danny attacked by a ghost or two in there while he's training. Doesn't really know what he's doing. So maybe some smaller, lesser ghosts, like those Ectopuses in episode one that come out of the Ghost Portal. Now that's how he kind of gained a little bit of experience of what other ghosts are capable of.

He doesn't dare say something to his parents because his parents are ghost hunters, and I think there's a fear inside of Danny if they find out that I'm now half ghost, they'll hunt me and want to experiment on me, so he doesn't dare tell his family, doesn't dare tell his sister cause his sister's true-blue and really honest and wants to, you know, help with everything. I even think, for the next month, Danny would have to maybe come up with some excuse as to why they can't see him. Maybe he's either A, he's sick; B, there's a sudden school field trip that'll take him out of town for three weeks, and of course, Jack and Maddie are so, uh, you know, ditzy sometimes, they would be like "Oh, I didn't even know that! But I see him living down in the Fenton lab, or living somewhere in Amity Park, finding a quiet place to be and just learning how to use his powers, and, and just pulling himself together and, and focal- learning how to focus.

If we were to go down that rabbit hole and find out, it's been a month since the accident, what happened to Danny Fenton in that month? What do you guys think of that idea? Ranking the 7 biggest games of 2017 college football’s opening week

Well, they're gonna do a Week 1 of college football again, so we'd better rank some stuff. What are the biggest games of the first week (assuming we don’t count, like, Oregon State-Colorado State and Stanford-Rice on August 26)?

7. Texas A&M at UCLA, Sept. 3, 7:30 p.m. ET, Fox

Have yet to see much excitement about this one, despite Round 1 at A&M going to overtime last year and both teams considered good enough to be ranked-ish. It's on Sunday, but at the same time as a game that's got a little bit more going for it. The only big story might be the losing coach's warm seat, and can you imagine if Kevin Sumlin doesn't start a season strong for once?

Surprising successes, like what Sumlin experienced in 2012, are what contract extensions are made of. Teases are not, and because of how it shapes our memories, it’s better to be a slow starter than a slow finisher.

From a booster perspective, not improving is the same as getting worse. Eventually, Sumlin either overcomes this plateau or gets overrun.

6. Ohio State at Indiana, August 31, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

That might not seem all that big, but here we have one of the few legit Playoff contenders facing an actual challenge in Week 1, going on the road to play a bowl-worthy division opponent. The Buckeyes should still run over IU, but for a lot of people, this game will function as the season's opener, with ESPN giving it the full MEGACAST treatment and all.

There's also the story line of the Hoosiers' fired head coach being tasked with fixing OSU's biggest weakness.

Kevin Wilson had one of the best coordinator runs of all time in the 2000s, helping to engineer a power-heavy version of the spread at Northwestern, then weaponizing it at Oklahoma. His 2008 Sooner offense scored 58 or more points for six consecutive games before running into Strong’s Florida defense and stalling at the goal line in the BCS Championship.

Under Wilson, Indiana made back-to-back bowls for the first time in 25 years. Under OSU defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, Rutgers went from laughingstock to annual bowl team. Meyer might once again have the most talented stable of assistants in the country. He might have the most talented, experienced roster as well.

5. Georgia Tech vs. Tennessee, Labor Day, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

The weekend's second sellout in an obscene cathedral of a new Atlanta stadium, HOT SEAT WATCH for Butch Jones, some deep rivalry history, Paul Johnson's stated quest for a 4-0 streak against the SEC East, a pretty fascinating clash of styles, and the only game on all day? I think this game's being a little overlooked.

UT’s biggest question, like GT’s, is QB. Three-ish-year starter Joshua Dobbs came within 54 passing yards and 169 rushing yards of having a 3,000-1,000 season in 2016 and was the engine for most of Jones’ tenure.

His replacement will likely be junior Quinten Dormady, a former four-star plucked out of a San Antonio suburb. Dormady is a 6’4 passer whose greatest strength is operating from the pocket.

The Georgia Tech defense lacks a proven pass-rusher, but returns six out of seven starters in the backfield and had some success down the stretch in 2016.

4. Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia, Sept. 3, 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC

These two conference contenders have an old rivalry trophy that Dana Holgorsen is claiming, whether WVU actually has it or not. Both teams will likely be ranked, something only a few games on this list can claim. Both fanbases are local to D.C. This will also be a major test for a Mountaineers offense that's drawing a ton of hype.

West Virginia’s spread-I offense attacks the soft spots in college defenses, combining two-back inside runs with play action and throws outside, all increasingly similar to the Art Briles veer-and-shoot offense. Lead running back Justin Crawford ran for 1,184 yards last year at 7.3 yards per carry while paired with Skyler Howard at QB. Grier could punish teams for loading up to stop Crawford.

The battle between Will Grier’s laser beams and an experienced and athletic Hokie secondary will be the heavyweight bout.

3. BYU vs. LSU, Sept. 2, 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

The first half will be overshadowed by No. 1 on this list, but there'll be plenty of thumpin' to go by the time we tune in.

The ground is where BYU should focus its game plan. The strength of what LSU returns on defense is its pass defense. BYU’s lost production in the passing game resembles what LSU is losing across the defensive front.

2. Florida vs. Michigan, Sept. 2, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

One funny technicality: the head coach in this game almost everyone agrees is great is the one with no division titles, not the one with back-to-back titles. This is only an observation. Thank you. Anyway:

The Wolverines are in Year 3 under Jim Harbaugh and again considered Big Ten contenders. The Gators are infusing Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire into a third-year Jim McElwain offense and could win the SEC East for a third year in a row.

This game could have postseason ramifications, but it’ll more likely be a majorly entertaining tune-up, with bragging rights on the line.

However, the game will tell us something about which team has the pieces to contend in a conference championship. Each has a big question that the talent of the other can help answer.

1. Alabama vs. Florida State, Sept. 2, 8 p.m. ET, ABC

The biggest season opener of all time, and there's reason to think the game will deliver:

Normally, there’s not a question of which team has the best defense when Alabama is involved. But Florida State has some unique talents. It might be better than any defense Alabama faced en route to Clemson last season.

Losing almost all of 2016 to injury has only fed the legend of safety/pass-rusher/destroyer of worlds Derwin James, who has top-five NFL draft hopes.

The Seminoles move James all over, usually turning the deep field into a no-fly zone at field safety. He was absent in disastrous performances against Lamar Jackson’s Louisville and Deshaun Watson’s Clemson and will be instrumental in keeping Hurts contained.
