it took me over 44 minutes to draw & the screen recording in the art program i use (autodesk sketchbook) brought it down to about 7 minutes and 25 seconds. i didn't wanna speed it up even more bc it'd be way too fast & jarring i think but!! i've uploaded the video to youtube (with some animal crossing music <3)!! i will still try to explain what i did here tho!!

my initial sketches are EXTREMELY loose! i start with the head by drawing a circle & extending past it for the chin of the character & proceed to do the nose, eyes, & mouth!! hair is next, but if there's a helmet i need to draw, i'll do that before the hair!! then i'll do the body starting from the shoulders & going down!! for the hands i just do circles/a general shape! no details!!

the sketch layer is a layer of black for the brush color with with lower opacity

i immediately do lines on top with the same brush but with black at full opacity on the kayer above!! this time i actually take my time to be more careful with details BUT i am still very sketchy & if smth isn't 100% accurate after i try a few times, i leave it be! hands however...

i almost always end up taking a photo of my hands using the front facing camera set to a 5 second timer on my phone! i also draw using my phone so it's literally having everything i need all in one place lol!! i do trace my own hands but obv i adjust based on what i'm drawing!! fish's hands are def gonna be wider than mine!!

NOW for color i color pick directly from screenshots!! however i use it mostly for flats & then pick my own for shading!! let's focus on the flats for now!! i start with the skin always!! the skin is going to have color layers above and below it, so it's easier for me to see where everything else will go if i've got the skin all settled. here you can see my color layers!! these are ALL flats!!

shading & lighting i don't rlly... focus on being accurate 100% but i try to do it based on where a shadow would absolutely be/to give the appearance of some type of depth (my art is very flat either way tho!) like where his lower hand is cupping i'll shade but leave the top of the upper hand unshaded for the most part! i lay out everything in a multiply layer first (can be any color u want based on the vibe u want!!) & then use a smudge tool to blend it out!! same goes for the lighting layer!!!

my art overall is a lot of scribbling big lines & curves then using the lineart to do the same but slowly make adjustments until it looks acceptable to me. it's SO much erasing & reshaping & i always have sketch lines everywhere but i like how it looks. it looks like i drew it, u know? plus the httyd books art style is a HUGE inspiration to me, at my core. i didn't even realize it was until ppl on here pointed it out :') i also enjoy drawing fast & moving on!! which is just smth i've trained myself to do since my star fox days (the reason i draw in the first place!!)

If you could eliminate one thing from your daily routine, what would it be and why? Honestly, it would be so nice to have things cooked for me? oh my god i'm just hopping in here today to say i have a butt mole, too!! i don't know anyone else that has one, let alone a duo! mine is at the top, close to center. and like. that mole is so oddly a part of my butt's identity that the thought of getting rid of it bothers me and i would be so miffed if i would have to have it removed for cancer reasons or whatever.

like. this is not what i was expecting on my dash today, but i dunno i'll share with you, you brought this up not me! i always thought it was kinda cute and a nice surprise for anyone that flipped me over lol.

if there's anything about my body that bothers me i try to remember that the thing i dislike about my body is probably something that someone else would really like to have on theirs. i really cringe at my face shape sometimes, and i have moments where i trip up and kinda get stuck on it, but what i've learned is to walk back and remember that this physical thing i don't like about myself isn't bad.

in fact, it's something that someone out there might have admired or desired for their whole life. (even if it does sound kinda funny in the context of butt moles, but hey, there's gotta be a big fan out there somewhere lol i mean seriously we're on tumblr.com if anyone should know this it's us :D)

what is kinda cool about my mole (aside from my appreciation of it) is that i have another mole at my hipbone on the other side, too, so i like to think of them as double sided moles. like, flip me over and it's still there! not perfectly, but well you get the drift, leave it to the imagination, there's beauty in imperfect, blah blah, i just like 'em.

so a girl in my math class might not be able to graduate?

so this girl, who ill be honest i dont particularly like that much and that feeling is def mutual, in my math class doesnt have enough service hours. at my school u have to have 50 service hours at least by junior year to graduate and u learn abt this in freshman year so shes had plenty of time. i did all mine and more at a summer camp w some friends it was fun, anyway yea so she only has 20 and theyre all undocumented and she needed the 50 by last week cause theres a big project w ur hours we had to do. u also have to present that project next month so idk what shes gonna do. her friend is in a similar boat but i think she at least has half. idk if she worked smthn out w the woman in charge of all this but i may not have to deal w her next year which i hate to say it would be nice. ive gone to school w her since 6th grade and shes always been really bitchy and has a bad case of bleach brain.

another thing i learned abt her is she cut up one of her school blouses so she just has the collar of it and just wears that under her school sweater......she showed us in math yesterday by lifting her shirt, se didnt even button the collar part.

as for jake... he has an older brother (ima age him up hella to fit the narrative) and his older brother cared a lot for him but he was the picture-perfect child and their parents pressured jake to follow in his older brother's footsteps at such a young age. like cmon he was 7 being forced to study physics bc his brother was aceing his high school physics exams on the way to go to the most prestigious colleges w a physics degree. and with their big age gap his brother didnt have time to play w him much bc he was alsays studying and their parents were so focused on the older sibling. jake finds a brother within jay bc hes also lonely and jay was the only person he could be himself around.

now that ive thought ab this man jayke as a duo is so precious to me 🥺 theyre brothers thru and thru bc they found a home within one another. jake always so excited to try new recipes jay is trying out, jay loving to model and style jake, jake sending jay goofy selfie updates of his day to jay, jay being the first person jake calls in the middle of the night for a late night convenience store run which leads to some crazy shenanigans. jayke also building their first lego set tgth when they were 9 and it's displayed in a glass case in the living room of their shared apt.

yk me, i'm just...brutal when it comes to backstories so pls be aware......

poison!jake was raised by a single mother who was never home because she worked so much. she worked late evening and night shifts and would sleep throughout the day so jake basically had to raise himself. she never physically abused him but because he was her main source of exhaustion (since she had to work to provide for him) she's slowly started growing hateful towards him and jake basically tried all of his life to please her just to fail miserably. his mother was never a mother to him, father not in the picture at all and after years of verbal and mental abuse he found a safe haven in jay. they met in middle school and for jake it was quite clear from the very beginning that that guy was his soulmate. he'd never openly say it bc they're too goofy and unserious for that (bc of their childhoods) but there's no person on this planet he's as grateful for as he is for jay.

jay's backstory is kinda similar to heeseung's just the other way around. up until he was seven he had the most picture perfect family with two loving parents who loved their son and each other with everything they have, until his father passed away in a car accident and his mother started resenting her son because he survived and the love of her life didn't. similar to the parks and heeseung he unfortunately was also mentally, physically, emotionally and verbally abused up until he moved out for college and the only person in his life, besides his friend, to show him love was his grandmother. she was the one taking care of him when his mother was at work and she'd even cry with him whenever she spotted new bruises. the only reason he goes back to his hometown every now and then is to visit her grave and keep her updated on his life.

both jake and jay dont have contact to their mothers so they're each other's only family. jay always introduces jake as his brother and whenever people ask him who his favorite person is jake responds with jay. they really are each other's rocks and im literally tearing up writing this URGH
