i posted this on twitter already but something interesting to add to this debate about whether or not it's transphobic to refuse to correctly gender trans women because they MAY be nonbinary-- as a visibly trans tme person who uses they/them, cis allies and trans people alike default to he/him for me more often than not.

and that's a reasonable assumption. i cut my hair short, i bind, i have a name usually designated for men, i don't pass as a man at all but my voice is on the deeper side and i present visibly more masculine than feminine. these people who default to using he/him for me aren't trying to misgender or invalidate me, quite the opposite actually. they're actively taking my presentation into account and assuming my gender based on it in an attempt to be polite and inclusive! usually, i just tell them my actual pronouns and we move on. this comfort is rarely afforded to trans women online and in person.

the reason for this is, you guessed it, transmisogyny. people don't want to assume trans womanhood. they want to assume you're anything *but* a woman. maybe you're dressed like a girl and look like a girl and have a girl name because uhhhh umm you're just a gnc guy, or you're nonbinary, but to be a Trans Woman? it's their last guess, the thing they see as the least plausible option because they see transfemininity as an allegation that you have to own up to. and if you own up to it they'll use your pronouns as a reward for your "honesty" (and even that isn't a given.)

to any trans woman reading this- nobody is defaulting to they/them for ME. they don't know if i'm actually a genderfucked boydyke faggirl, they assume i'm a binary trans man based on my presentation which yes, they are paying attention to and take into account. anyone who gives you the "i just didn't want to assume" excuse is lying. never, ever put up with it. i get accidentally misgendered all day every day because people do for me, a TME trans person, what they say they can't do for you out of feigned respect for people who make up such a small percentage of the trans community that to meet one in real life would be an anomaly. the people who do this to you do not deserve your understanding or to be pandered to. fuck them. demand the respect you deserve, because that's what an assumption of your gender is; respect.

It becomes so blatant so quickly that terf arguments are just about this imaginary idea of trans people they've invented in their heads and arguing that it's bad for some reason and then the "reason" is "I don't like it."

A terf tried to tell me that no one actually tells me I can't identify as a lesbian, just that they don't believe my "delusions" about changing my sex. Which is already bullshit but also I'm not changing my sex anyway. I'm a butch boydyke but I was afab and have continued identifying as female despite my gender being masculine. This person made the insane leap in logic that no one cares that I'm a guy and a lesbian because they hate guys who are lesbians, they hate that I call myself a guy and a lesbian because I'll never be a "real" guy, which was never my goal in the first place. When this was pointed out they then said that I was misleading them from the start by calling myself trans since I'm not transitioning.

So basically the terf wanted an easy argument. "You can't change your sex" okay well wrong but I'm not trying to anyway. "Then you aren't trans" okay so you think the only 'real' trans people transition but also that transition isn't real. What even is the purpose of this argument. There are literally not even any points for me to argue against it's just a cycle of "you can't do that!" um, watch me?

I mean I know what the argument is, it's that they don't think trans people in general should exist so people like me need to be freed from our "brainwashing" and those that transition medically should cry and lament their choices to prevent the next generation from making the same "mistakes" before disappearing from public life to die. i’m genderfaunan. it’s similar to genderfaun, the difference being that it means i *can* experience feminine genders, but only if they’re masculine in some way, making them androgynous. personally, i still don’t have them very often.

i definitely experience some sort of queer attraction towards girls. i’m not quite sure *what* kind of attraction (not sexual. romantic?? queerplatonic?? other???), and i get dysphoric if i’m called a girl (even during the rare times i am kinda one. :/ ) i used to call myself panromantic, but nowadays i prefer to use the label achillean. i like putting emphasis on the mlm/nblm/nblnb aspect of my identity, and achillean implies that maybe i’m attracted to girls without saying “this person is for sure attracted to girls in these specific ways.”

but as i was reading through your blog a while ago during my quest to learn more about “contradictory” labels, i was surprised to find that i kind of like the term lesboy? idk if it’s just because “boy” is in the name, and my brain is going “look!! look!! another way to call yourself a boy!!” but i don’t hate it.

i’m hesitant to call myself a lesboy though. it puts a word to the basic idea of “boy(ish) and experiences queer attraction to women,” but i’m worried it’ll still cause me dysphoria. and there’s a couple of people in my friend group who are very against the whole “contradictory labels” thing, at least the last time i talked to them about it. there’s maybe been a few signs a couple of them have changed their minds? i’m at the point where i don’t really care what they think, and i have a few good links to share if the topic is brought up again. but still.

(i have similar feelings about the label boydyke. i might like it slightly better? purely because it puts “boy” first and that could lessen any dysphoria? saphboy isn’t too bad either. honestly, i might end up choosing between labels based on flags alone skdhsk)

thank you for sharing, I get being worried about the possible dysphoria when trying on these labels. lesbian, dyke, sapphic, etc. still normally have strong connections to womanhood, even if not inherently. also another reason why I think these labels that specify and put an emphasis on how exactly you describe yourself with them is helpful. I like being a lesbian (most of the time) but I love being a lesboy because it acknowledges my bigender/genderfluid identity, it puts the most important parts of myself into one word. no one is making assumptions about my gender, or even really anything else of what I can and can't do because of it being known among inclusive communities

the argument that lesbians can't be men is transphobic, intersexist, gender essentialist, exorsexist and a lot of other very exhausting and historically inaccurate ways. it has nothing to do with real lesbianism but rather rad fems and political lesbians online trying to turn the lesbian community into a "girls only" club where they can shit on men and be transphobic and toxic

people love to jump to the assumption that i'm taking about cis men first and foremost, which i'm not- although i genuinely don't care if a cis man identifies as a lesbian i'm not a cop and you shouldn't be, either. we all need to collectively kill the cops in our minds. no, this will not create an influx of "cishet men invading lesbian spaces." cishet men can literally already choose to identify as lesbians if they want to and they literally do not. most cishet men are lesbophobic and disgusted by irl lesbians and only find lesbianism attractive in porn. if cishet men wanted to lesbians, they already would be. also again, i'm not a cop, so it's not my business if a cis man does identify for any reason as a lesbian. if that concept makes one uncomfortable, they can choose to ignore that person.

butchphobia is heavily linked to this behavior. many butch lesbians are women and women only and that's a legitimate expression of butchhood, but MANY and i mean many butches throughout history have been transmascs and trans men, or have been men in other capacities, such as trans women who are also men, and other multigender people.

bigender people exist in every identity. id on't know why people conveniently love to just forget about this when it comes to the argument of lesbian men. it's not just you, i get this sentiment all the time. we need to realize that multigender people exist. we need to collectively accept that genderfluid and genderqueer and genderfuck people exist and they can be lesbians, too. many butch lesbians are literally men and it's not right to kick them out of the community. please remember that the "lesbians can only be women and only if they're cis and not Too Butch" mindset directly stems from lesbian separatism and political lesbianism. i'd suggest researching those topics, they were at their peak in the 1980s and 90's in the United States and caused a lot of damage that we're still seeing the ripples from

lesbians shouldn't have to get some kind of extra or approval to be men. i really just don't get this mindset. you have to ask yourself why this even matters to begin with. it doesn't. it's not harming anyone else for a lesbian to be a man. if you're not attracted to them you don't have to be. if you are attracted to them, it doesn't invalidate your lesbianism. bigender, multigender, non binary, genderfluid, genderfuck, gnc, intersex, trans, and other gender variant people shouldn't be banned from the lesbian community for no reason.

also i keep begging people to do so but please research the life and identity of Leslie Feinberg. zie was a polygender butch lesbian who did identify as a man. i repeat this phrase a lot but if you don't know who zie is, your knowledge of lesbian history of very limited. lesie was a very prolific activist for lesbian and trans rights, as well as many other important issues. leslie wasn't some random tumblruser or what have you, there are people who have existed well outside of the bounds of this website who have identified as lesbian men. this phenomenon is not new, it's not relegated to the internet, and it's not something that people should have never heard of before.

i suggest researching lesbian history outside of tumblr. i'm one of the few who isn't, but most of the popular bloggers in the lesbian community on here is proudly transphobic as fuck. when they say "I'M A LESBIAN, MEN DNI!!!!!!" they are PROUDLY showing their transphobia. a lesbian who is bigender, multigender, non binary, transmasc, genderfluid, and so on is trans. this is transphobia. this is lesbophobia. lesbians can be men whether or not it makes an individual comfortable. there are also trans women who are... also men. we can't keep allowing this to be a "threat". we are killing our own when we do this

i'm glad you took the time to ask. i get heated on this issue, so this is a rather passionate response because i'm just outright sick of people acting like the idea of a lesbian identifying a man is somehow unheard of. lesbians are well known for being some of the most genderfucked people in the queer community. we struggle with gender our entire lives due to the expectations and stressors placed on our shoulders, as well as who we are on the inside. it will never unheard of for lesbians to be genderqueer.

first! i hc ethan as autistic + lesbian basically 100% of the time, and i switch between transfem + transmasc depending on how i'm feeling tbh

for both of the gender hcs i stay with ethan never feeling a big connection with his birth gender growing up and also not really understanding the insanity surrounding feminine vs masculine gender roles / stereotypes / actions etc (this is where the autism hc gets relevance). so i think child ethan was extremely gender apathetic which leads to a "more masc" presentation in general because people tend to view neutral = masculine when it comes to things about gender.

FOR THE TRANSMASC LESBIAN HC: i think ethan being aware he's transmasc is something on the outskirts of his mind since childhood, especially once Jane is born and there's a very stark difference between their behaviors as "little girls".
