The fic takes place in the post cannon, with Kabru serving as Laios’s royal advisor. Their professional relationship has put them in proximity of each other near constantly, and the simmering obsession that Kabru has had about Laios through the story reaches a boiling point when Laios reveals that he’s become (monstrously) obsessed with Kabru.

What gets me (aside from just like. my own sexual proclivities lmao) is the imo perfect Kabru characterization. I think a lot of people misunderstand what drives him and so when they write him it feels kind of odd. Kabru isn’t a manipulator,in t like abusive sense but he is a…social engineer. And a compulsive liar. And obsessed with Laios. He’s a nice guy, but acts amicable helpful and friendly to mask his social engineering.

This fic really gets that Kabru will say things, not without meaning them, but some part of him projects an image of cool confidence and he will act subconsciously to maintain that mask - in the interest of furthering his own goals. Those goals in this fic happen to be finding plausible ways to be intimate with Laios while maintaining some sort of professional veneer. It also employs a very subtle head cannon of him dealing with intrusive thoughts (kill Laios) in a way that I find pretty authentic and endearing as someone who also deals w intrusive thoughts.

And Laios. Again, characterization is really on point. This fic plays up the like chimeraization of Laios, and it takes his hunger seriously in a way that I think a lot of other fics and the main storyline often play for laughs. It’s about the need for satiation and satisfaction, but never feeling fulfilled. His desire disgusts him, because he’s been told it should, and as king he has every thing he could ever want. But he’s still Laios, he’s earnest and truthful and awkward and what he wants is Kabru. Inside of Laios’s appetite (all meanings of the word) is deep shame and inside of that shame is the sensory seeking autism need to feed on food that is forbidden (monsters, Kabru)

Kabru occupies a space in Laios’s life in the post cannon that we don’t really see equivocated in the main story. During the story he certainly cares deeply for his other party members and values their insight 100%. But Kabru is regent to the throne. In the day in day out running a kingdom, Laios is no figurehead but he works intimately (lol) with Kabru to compensate for his lack of social graces. There’s also the like, subtextual bodyguard implications that Laios is perfectly capable of defending himself but Kabru is acutely trained in combat against other humans, making him especially useful to a newly crowned king in danger of assassination. This is what makes me ship them so hard - Kabru’s story long attempt to know Laios combined with the implications of their post cannon positions

This fic really nails desire as narrative tension in romance - the “I want to, but I cant” “I know we shouldn’t, but we are” Not just erotic/romantic desire either, the desire to maintain appearances, the desire to secure a career. This thing is only three chapters (for now 🤞🏼) but the DEPTH of this erotica is fucking hngdbbsbdbcbcndndbgjgkfkdkdbd

I don’t know when the entire fandom decided Kabru is a trans man but I do like it despite my contrarian impulses. Some of it's just that marginalized people are capable of being wrong about stuff. Sometimes because they're misinformed, but also they might just be petty or in a bad mood and lashing out, and so on. The idea that the marginalized person is ALWAYS right and the privileged person is ALWAYS wrong doesn't recognize the ability of marginalized people to make bad faith arguments just like anyone else. I think a better way of thinking of it is that marginalized people are more often than not, when framing things this way, coming from an understandable place.... but you don't have to agree with someone to understand them.

There's also the fact that whenever you decide a particular group is always right, that is basically telling someone from that group how to abuse and gaslight people. We've seen examples of this over the course of Tumblr, abusive users like Riley and genderbitch who used their marginalized status as an excuse to doxx people. But I've also seen this happen offline in progressive communities, where the danger is that framing things purely in terms of broader societal dynamics fails to recognize how there can be other power dynamics in smaller communities and more intimate relationships, and also how guilting people over their supposed unconscious biases and how that affects your personal relationships with them can be used as a way of controlling and abusing them.

I knew this awful guy when I was in grad school who was a trans man of color and would assume this was the case every time a woman rejected his romantic overtures, even though he did tons of other stuff that turned women away (such as bombarding them with texts/DMs within minutes of meeting them) and also, some people just don't find you attractive for reasons that have nothing to do with your being trans or your racial identity. This was mostly just funny and cringe when he struck out dating, but he'd use this as an excuse to stalk and creep on cis white women he was attracted to, the idea that their rejection was racist/transphobic and therefore he shouldn't have to honor it. He also had a habit of dating really insecure cis white women, getting super serious in those relationships really fast, and gaslighting those women about how they're just unconsciously racist/transphobic when they took issue with that or his other decisions in those relationships. The fact that trans men of color in general have less power than cis white women didn't matter about the fact that he had more power in those relationships (and he was also a big name on campus within queer groups there, and a lot of these women were younger and newer to these communities), nor the fact that the way he used those identities to abuse women is abusive and coercive no matter what the power dynamic.

To give some more minor examples, you see some similar stuff in academia and other professional environments where the fact that someone is marginalized just matters way less in one specific interaction than the fact that they're an established name in that discipline with a comfortable, secure job and the "privileged" person they're going up against is a young newbie nobody.

How do you navigate love after losing the person you loved the most?

I realised I don't like writing WIP intros where I just list everything super neatly + have a nice official summary so I am just going to infodump!! Lover Boy is an Adult Literary/Historical novel set in the late 1980s that follows a gay man's navigation of love, sexuality, community and grief after losing his best friend to AIDS. It's inspired by my own experiences of grief + caretaking and the dissertation I did on grief in queer AIDS narratives. It follows Beau, my beautiful special boy, and is like patchwork quilt of all of his avenues of love -- romantic, sexual, platonic, familial, communal, self -- that is stitched together with the grief from this one major loss. This is paralleled with chronological flashbacks telling the story of Bobby's illness, and how Beau took care of him.

Beau and Bobby are best friends who were platonically in love with each other, who had to adapt their relationship as Bobby got sicker and Beau became his caretaker, and in the midst of this adversity became closer than ever. Beau is a lover of love in all ways, who thinks the best holidays Halloween and Valentines Day, who loves sex but is bad at not falling in love afterwards, who has a soft heart, who also has a massive crush on George Michael. Bobby loved his life, his friends and going to the club with them, scenic hikes and swimming, his pet snake named Judas, leather and heavy metal and activism and also the Muppets (his fave was Gonzo btw). He was obsessed with volcanoes and wanted to be a volcanologist. And Beau misses him so much!!! He is trying to understand what his life is now after losing such a big part of it. He is trying to understand what kind of love he wants. He also is trying really hard not to fall back in love with his ex boyfriend who is back in the picture. And he is not really doing any of this well!!

Other features of this novel:

Gay + Autistic protagonist who doesn't know he is autistic but his special interest is horror movies and it shows (favourites are anything monstrous + full of bloodsoaked practical effects. Favourite of all time is The Lost Boys). Beau literally looks towards horror movies to try and understand grief and loss

Protagonist is a guy who actively wants to be haunted and is looking for any signs of ghosts

Lesbian + Gay + Bi + Trans + everything solidarity. An honouring of that history. Exploration on how the AIDS crisis shaped and reshaped community and identity because well, I did an entire dissertation on it and I am not putting that to waste!!! It is interesting and important!!

A narrative that is brutally honest about grief and death, and all the ways it is messy and complicated. A narrative that also doesn't always take itself seriously because sadness and joy are always holding hands

Narrative that plays around with form (video transcripts, letters, journal entries, descriptions of art) and POV (past + present tense blended together, third person present that often dips into second)

Exploration of caretaking on a community level and an intimate, one to one level. Look into how love is often all the little ways we help each other hold on.

Exploration of disability and sickness and how it shapes your identity, your relationship with yourself and others, especially when you're young (I also have a novella planned actually exploring this from Bobby's POV, but you didn't hear that from me!!!!)

The idea that grief never gets smaller, just your life grows around it

The idea that you can love your friends!!! You can be in love with them!! And that love is no "lesser" than romantic love, and it is just as beautiful and big and bright. Even when Beau navigates romantic relationships, these aren't put on a pedestal above any other type of love

so. speaking from my own experience and some trans men I'm friends with, sex can be very nuanced and different. for example, some trans men who have not had bottom surgery either because they don't want it (which is 100% valid for any reason) or haven't had the chance yet (because it is expensive, takes lots of preparation, and it is a major decision and major surgery), only have anal sex. for some trans men, vaginal sex or anything relating to that part can be very triggering and cause body dysmorphia.

however, some trans men (like myself) do not mind and can actually enjoy vaginal sex as well as anal, even prefer it. it doesn't make us less than a man. we are still men. we are still just as valid.

both are completely valid feelings. it's all personal preference and what helps someone feel most comfortable, most pleasure, and most safe and like themselves.

so imo, the best course of action would be to not disclose. i think you'll both feel more comfortable if you just let the relationship progress organically. if he asks and you're comfortable sharing, i think you can definitely tell him and also include that you don't want him to feel like an experiment. that should open the door for some good conversations about boundaries, likes and dislikes, what terminology he prefers, if he has had a form of bottom surgery, etc. basically, just let him take the lead on that. those conversations can start to feel a little clinical, so feel free to make them spicy. it's more fun that way.
