feeling very sad about the kuzy news not just because i'm going to miss him in dc, and because without him we are down to four guys from the cup-winning team, team of my heart, but also because this anticlimactic sad probably-ending to his time as a capital is so illustrative of how shitty this sport can be. he may not have out here speaking articulately in english about his mental health problems, but he was not shy about them. he didn't hide that he was struggling. he has spoken openly about how hockey culture can give you such a dark and destructive mindset and how much he cares about not bringing that home to his children, how he doesn't want his children to play the game because of that. about how he purposefully tries to not take things so seriously to protect himself from that even though he knows it pisses people off. instead of sympathy or taking the opportunity for a wider conversation people mostly made coke jokes. when he first went into the players assistance program i felt so sick because i knew people were going to be awful about it and i was right.
i'm so sad but i'm glad that gmbm seems to at least kind of be working with him to find him the change of scenery he wants instead of just dumping him. i hope he gets whatever kind of second chance he wants or needs, and wherever he lands he is able to find peace and joy. i will miss you beautiful bird man <3
#just needed to get this out i guess!!#had myself a little cry in the bath watching the round 2 ot pens goal over and over lol :(#but truly when he was at his best he was so good and joyful and so fun to watch. i really hope he finds that again#and man i also keep thinking abt how his whole career was colored by nasty russophobia that NA hockey loves to pretend doesn't exist anymor#and no one in mainstream hockey media is ever going to dig into that. it think about how it might have made things harder for him#the russophobia is such a messy and complicated topic now because of the (gestures at current world events of it all) but like.#man it sucks. it all just sucks#evgeny kuznetsov#washington capitals#hockey for ts

HEART DEFENDERââââââ
๨ŕ§â¸ťniki x fem!reader
⸝ synopsis, Nishimura Riki was truly and honestly, your sworn enemy, and everyone knew. You two shared lots of things, a friend group, academic rivalry, and most importantly school popularity. Receiving tons of confessions and notes on the daily from your fanboys and fangirls was nothing new. So you can't help but be shocked when he asks you to be his fake girlfriend for that same reason.
genre: enemies to lovers, fluff, highschool au
pairing: popular-footballplayer!niki x popular-fem!reader
wordcount: 11.5k !
tags: underage drinking, foul language/swearing, niki is an asshole, own characters included, y/n and niki are unrealistically popular but bare with me pls, jay is called a pervertđ, kissing
authors note! this was written for my beautiful babygirl , and it was also her idea so props to my pookie yall!!!đ also no proof read so sorry for any errors!!
A GENTLE HEAT falls onto the silk bed sheets, as a flickering blue light washes over the room, a sound waking you up from the dreamy state. You still had a hard time settling into the new reality that eloped you just a few days back. The summer was over, and so weâre all the exciting things you hadnât been able to do.Â
Although you didnât mind, it brought you comfort to keep your body and mind active. You donât like to mull over the fact that something is over, because that never brought it back, choosing to focus on every minute that was yet to come.Â
Maybe that was exactly the reason youâve become so popular amongst the male population of Alpine High-school, students swooning over your exquisite beauty, tall, well proportioned figure and beautiful mind. Some looks were only hungry for popularity and full of lust, but amongst all, you also found people who truly wanted to know you, and find out what was underneath the pretty shell.Â
Some would call it cliche, to only stick around people who held the same status as you, or shared a similar popularity rank, but you truly never intended for that. Having two of the most popular students in one team, automatically makes the entirety of the group more desirable and unattainable. You never had control over any of these things, but youâd also be lying if you said it didnât make you feel even more special.Â
Your phone vibrates, Song Eunseokâs name displayed on the screen, messages filling up your home screen every second. You smile lightly and press one of them to shoot him a quick reply, preventing him from spamming you with keyboard smashes.Â
Song Eunseok was one of your best-friends. He was there when others werenât, and he was always the one to help you endure any pain in life. He was like a bandaid, keeping you safe from any infectious disease but also helping ease the pain, even if it didnât feel like it at first. The affection in his tone, his words glowing with secrecy and honesty every time he spoke to you, thatâs exactly what made him so notable to your heart.Â
Kim Hana was also one of those people to you. Eunseok was good to you, but heâd never be able to substitute for a girl best-friend. You never treated Hana as a second option though. She wasnât even a month older than you, but wiser than most. Hana always knew what to say or do, she was like a compass to you. You knew you could never lose her, or else you wouldnât know which direction to walk towards. Still, behind the smart and intellectual facade, was a joyful and bright girl, who had the most infectious laugh you knew. Her smile was adorable and words of affection- comforting.Â
Park Sunghoon was also a member of your clique, recruited by Jake who swam alongside him on the schoolâs swimming team. Youâve never been really close to him, he was more of a friend to you when others were around. That didnât mean you didnât care for him though. Sunghoon was different, he was very secretive and smart. He didnât ever try, but always succeeded. He wasnât flashy about it either, keeping most of his success to himself.Â
Jake, who recruited Sunghoon, used to be your best-friend. You grew up with him, just like in every childhood best-friends movie, the two of you did everything together. Just like you, he moved out of his home country in his early years, which was one of the many things you had in common and could empathize about. You decided to go to the same highschool, following the promise you made in 4th grade; that youâll always stick together. The reciprocation brought you a feeling of comfort and safety, at first you didnât mind when he started getting closer with Nishimura Riki because you trusted him. You trusted him enough, and turned a blind eye enough until your once best friend wasnât yours anymore.Â
You tried to ignore the low pain it gave you, small weebs formed in your mind as you tried to justify Jakeâs behavior, arguing that he still speaks to you so kindly. You were still in the same group together, spending most of your days together and laughing sweetly at the smallest things. But instead of calling you, heâd call Niki, instead of hanging out with you on the weekends, heâd hang out with Niki and instead of inviting you as his plus one to events, heâd invite Niki.Â
Thatâs exactly why you hated Nishimura Riki, the last member of the seemingly âpopular kidâ clique you formed.Â
Niki was equally attractive and popular as you. He embodied a typical, bookish bad-boy character, the smitten look on his face winning girls hearts over every time. He was also a member of the football team, already earning a full ride scholarship for his sports successes. He was already an intelligent boy, but a free entry to college was nothing heâd deny. He was vastly athletic, but always dreamed of going to university. Niki may not have looked the part, but he truly was much more ambitious than many would guess.Â
He didnât have many reasons to hate you, but the sole fact that you were unbeatable, the first rank in school always alongside your name. He always stood proudly next to you on class president election day, but always ended up getting hurt when once again, you were chosen. Everyone loved you and even though he had his fair share of fans, he could never compare.Â
So the satisfaction that taking away your best-friend from you brought him, was enough to console his damaged pride. It was enough to compensate for his stolen spotlight.Â
You both had reasons to hate each other, and never even considered talking it out, even if you shared a friend group. Passive aggressive comments, and sarcastic remarks were enough to satisfy yours and Nikiâs mind.Â
___________
Niki, with his fair share of popularity, couldnât get away from constant love letters clogging up his locker, or girls' heartfelt love confessions. With the face of an angel and skills of a child prodigy, it was inevitable in some way. Those same girls were the reason for his incredibly and annoyingly large ego.Â
âNiki!â the brunette caught his attention with her squeaky and high pitched voice.Â
He turned around to catch a glimpse at her, only to find her with a pink glittery box in hand. Niki could sense another thought out, insanely touching confession coming his way.Â
âDo I know you?â he asked, trying his best to not make a rude face at the girl. At the end of the day he was the it-boy at his high-school, and had an image to upkeep.Â
âYou could get to know me. We have chemistry together!â she replied happily, completely neglecting the fact that his reply itself was a bit rude to begin with.Â
âIs that supposed to be some sort of pickup line?â Niki chuckled, running a hand through his hair as his shoulder fell to his right. He leaned on the lockers trying to remember the girl he was speaking to.Â
She pulls at the fabric of his blazer, a frisky look on her face âIt could be if you want it to beâÂ
He felt his body tensing up, a wave of uncomfort speeding through his veins. He was used to girls shoving themselves onto him, but why couldnât he be viewed as an equal to them? Just because he has stolen many women's hearts, didnât mean he didnât want to be treated with dignity and respect.Â
He could feel a bead of sweat trickle down his spine as the unknown girl pushed her body closer and closer. His white shirt started to suffocate him, feeling the box she had in her hands press against his stomach.Â
He could barely read the name Oh Jia off the girl's name tag, before backing away, making her stumble a little bit.Â
âDonât you think youâre getting a little too comfortable, Jia?â he asked.Â
She took a deep breath. She thinks of the many nights sheâd seen the boy infront of her standing proudly with a confident smile as he pulls her closer to his body. She is taken aback by the difference, wondering how she could've gotten so easily deceived by her own head to fall for such a fabricated version of Nishimura Riki, She had swooned over the cover, just like many girls before and after her.Â
This was one of the many daily confessions the boy would receive. Some happened to be much more friendly and cute, even making Nikiâs heart a little warmer. Some students just liked to test his limits, see how easy he can actually be. He hated that. He hated not being treated like a human being but rather a school attraction they all got to take turns trying out.Â
Although you were sworn enemies, the similarity between yours and Nikiâs experience love wise, was undeniable.Â
âWhat is my pretty girl doing all alone? Where did all your friends go?â Hyunsik, a member of the student council, asked with a flirtatious tone stopping you from getting to your history class.Â
âYours?â you questioned with a calm voice, having an idea of who Hyunsik was.Â
He smiled, wondering why you always played so hard to get. He was gorgeous, so what was your problem to just give into his warm embrace?Â
âDonât be like thatâ he answered, using his hand to push a strand of loose hair behind your ear.Â
You felt so incredibly uncomfortable. You had known Hyunsik for some time now, as the class president you did have to consult on important issues with him.Â
âWhat do you mean, Hyunsik?â you asked, a wonky smile on your face as you tried to give the boy a sign that you weren't interested in him.Â
âYou know what I mean. C'mon Y/n, you donât have to play so hard to get. We could have fun, Iâd make you feel so good and happyâ he confessed, his stance radiating confidence which was unbreakable.Â
He was attractive, but his personality and ego completely erased any chances of scoring a date with you or many other girls.Â
âIâm interested in someone elseâ you answered, backing away from him.Â
âYou always say that, yet you're still singleâ he said, offended by your relectuance.Â
âI donât think thatâs any of your business though, Hyunsik. I have to go nowâ you said, not letting him say anything else.Â
This wasn't the first time boyâs just assumed youâd be easy like that. Just like Niki, you hated it. You didn't mind the confessions, as long as they were kept cute and respectful. You hated being mean, and these situations just forced it out of you.Â
__________Â
âWhy donât we call Minjun over here, youâve been hanging out with him a lot, right?â Hana asked, turning to you. She shuffles to grab her phone, but you stop her.Â
Niki rolled his eyes at her words, not in the mood to stubbornly try to keep a civil conversation with Minjun. Kim Minjun was a member of the football team, and the number two placeholder in school. He really was handsome- slim face and a defined jawline, dark thick hair, eyebrows not touched once but seemingly shaped by Aphrodite herself, captivating siren eyes that made you fear eye contact, and lastly plump cherry lips. You could go on about Minjunâs beauty for days and not get bored of the topic.Â
He notoriously fought with Niki for the team captain position, and although never achieved it, still managed to be disliked by Niki. They had a visible rivalry. While Niki tried to beat Minjun for second place, Minjun tried to beat Niki for the team captain spot. The passive aggressive remarks only made it worse, but for the sake of the team they kept, or at least tried to keep it civil.Â
It reminded you of your friend group. You always tried your best to hide your deep rooted hatred for Niki around everyone, for the sake of their peace. The difference was that Niki never tried. He couldnât bear a minute without making a sneaky and rude comment towards you. In some way it made you feel better about yourself, knowing that you're mature enough to not bother your friends with your private issues.Â
âHeâs probably with the teamâ you answered, and she pouted at your response.
âHe wouldnât want to sit with Miss Perfect here, anywaysâ Niki snickered, poking at his lunch uninterested in what he saw on the metal tray. The pork cutlet seemed awfully indigestible today.Â
âI think youâre more so the problemâ Hana defended, knowing you wouldnât probably respond to him.Â
âItâs not like Minjun is perfect, c'mon. Heâs an annoying, selfious fuckboyâ Jake said, in an attempt to clear Nikiâs name.Â
But why couldnât he defend you? Did he really dislike you that much?Â
âHe really isnât thoughâ you responded, and Jake seemed taken aback by your change in demeanor.Â
It almost looked like he felt entitled to say anything, but you had no right to respond to him unless you werenât agreeing with him. Maybe that was what was left after your friendship of 10 years, the entitlement.Â
âOf course youâd say that, because you probably want him like all his other fangirlsâ Niki smirked, and pushed away his tray.Â
âDude, leave it. Can we just have a peaceful lunch period for once?â Sunghoon spoke up, looking up from his English notes.Â
He usually never said anything whenever these tense situations happened. Sunghoon kept quiet, listening in on the meaningless words leaving your mouths.Â
âIâm gonna goâ you rose from your chair, and picked up all your things. Hana tried to stop you, but her attempts were useless, as you gave her a small smile and left the table.Â
âWell, I will too thenâ Niki announced trailing right after you.Â
He walked towards you, a stupid look displayed on his face. You hated that you didnât have any power over him, letting him treat you like this for no good reason.Â
âIf you want to continue telling me how awful Minjun is, I really suggest you leave it, cause Iâm not going to change my mindâ you turned to him, as he stopped next to you by the lockers.Â
âI just want to get some books from my locker, canât I?â he tilted his head, and smirked evilly when he saw your annoyed look.Â
Another thing you hated was having a locker right next to his. Whoever assigned them, must truly despise you. Or potentially pray for your downfall.
He just scoffed at your lack of interest, and started to rummage through his pocket for the small key to his locker.Â
As soon as both of your locker doors opened, a swarm of notes and pink, red or purple little envelopes fell out. Some were cutely decorated, with adorable glittery stickers, some just a simple paper ripped out of the author's notebook.Â
You two looked at each other confused. You knew Niki was popular, and Niki knew you were popular, but not to this extent.Â
It wasnât an issue, for a long time, but as comical as it sounded this was starting to get annoying pretty quickly. Sometimes the both of you wondered what made you so special, what made you stand out so much. Was it the academic success that no other student seemed to achieve yet? Maybe it was the physical tasks that you conquered without breaking a sweat? Or was it just your appearance that was unique among all?Â
His mind was rushing, but one idea came out on top of the bubble of thoughts.Â
______Â
âYouâve got to be kidding me, Nikiâ you laughed at his absurd idea, wondering if Jake is somewhere recording this secretly.Â
Niki canât yet tell if youâll buy it or not. The silence sinks into his skin, as the imprisoning walls surrounding you seem to close on him. Did he really just say that out loud?Â
âListen, we can just pretend to un-hate each other or something, and then date. Itâs all fake, obviously. Do you think Iâd want someone like you to be my girlfriend?â he responds. âWe canât tell anyone thoughâÂ
âI donât think thatâs a good ideaâ you mumble, and he chuckles.Â
âOh please donât tell me this is about Minjun?âÂ
You look at him annoyed. Why does he suddenly care so much about your relationship with Kim Minjun?Â
âAnd what if it is?â you roll your eyes, turning away from his tall figure.Â
âHe doesnât care about you, Y/n. Canât you just agree, we both get something out of itâ he says, exasperated.Â
He reaches for your small shoulder, turning your body in his direction. He holds you while silence embraces the both of you. The sun subtly shines through the small window of the equipment room, illuminating his face, a sparkle in his eyes as he looks at you.Â
âWhat is in it for me?â you ask quietly, the moment between the two of you, making your heart beat faster.Â
Niki softens at the concern in your tone.Â
He knew you liked Minjun, everyone did, but this much? Did you really care for that douchebag? Did you lay on your bed at night, your thoughts always coming back to Kim Minjun? What did he do to steal your cold heart so easily?Â
âAn empty locker, thatâs for sureâ he lets go of you âAnd assholes like Hyunsik wonât annoy you anymore, isnât that enough?â he adds, his tone laced with confidence.Â
âYou know about Hyunsik?â you ask curiously.Â
He stifles a sharp inhale, realization hitting him.Â
Did you think he cares? He doesnât. He couldnât care less.Â
He tries to calm his unsteady nerves, preventing himself from saying anything that could damage his uninterested approach to your person even more.Â
âEunseok told me,â he answered quickly, his gaze turning to the small window.Â
You never told Eunseok.Â
You never told anyone cause this wasnât something abnormal. Yes, maybe Hyunsik was a bit forward about it, pushing himself onto you, but you just forgot about it after some time.Â
âAlrightâ you clear your throat âLetâs do itâÂ
Niki feels an unfamiliar warmth in his heart, trying to stifle the excitement that took over his body when he heard your words.Â
âBut what about our friends, Niki? Do you seriously think Sunghoon or Jake are that stupid?â you askÂ
It floods him again; the comfort of his name passing your lips, and he doesnât know why. Heâs never felt this way.Â
âHana is a hopeless romantic, sheâll believe anything if you slap a âboyfriendâ label on it. Eunseok and Sunghoon don't care anyway, and Jake? Iâll figure it outâ he answers, his voice so calm âEveryone else will just believe it as long as we make it believableâ he proceeds cautiously, putting emphasis on the âweâ. Â
âI donât get not telling our friends, honestlyâ you murmured, looking around the room.Â
He sighed âNo offense to Hana, but sheâs the biggest blabbermouth I knowâ he confesses.Â
You agree internally, not wanting to admit it, too proud of your friendship with the girl.Â
âIâll pick you up tomorrowâ he says after a moment of tranquility, leaving the room after he finishes his sentence.Â
You watch him step out and leave you alone with all the thoughts and worries.Â
______
And so he did pick you up.Â
You wondered if Niki had cleaned up his car for you, remembering the mess last time you were in it. Probably not though.Â
âLetâs go,â he said, keeping the door open for you.Â
He grabbed your hand tightly, pulling through the crowd of students gathered in front of the building. Some had a stupid look on their face, wondering how the two of you could ever be dating, some didnât even budge.Â
Your chest swells with a torment of emotions, as you feel his warm, wrought hand grip yours. Pride, confusion, determination swarm through your veins, making a mess of your head. You press your knuckles to the warmth of your cheek, flustered by the looks you were receiving.Â
Your eyes scan the whole building, trying to find Minjun, worried what heâd say when he finds out. You never wanted him to think you were just playing with him, and by the looks of it, thatâs exactly what he was thinking when his eyes spotted yours.Â
A sad look of disappointment decorated his face, as you passed by, holding Nishimura Rikiâs hand so tightly.Â
You screw your eyes shut, chest rising and falling rapidly. You want to tell him everything, you know you could. But there was a boundary you promised to not cross, for yours and Nikiâs peace.Â
âThis is bullshitâ Sunghoon raises his eyebrows, as the two of you appear in front of all your friends.Â
âThe assignment you wrote for my physics class was bullshit, and I didnât say anything. This-â he says pointing to your intertwined hands âThis is for real, the real dealâ he adds proudly.Â
How long has he been acting?Â
âWhen did all of this happen?â Hana asks excitedly.Â
You didnât like agreeing with Niki, and even though it was sad to a degree, Hana really was gullible.Â
You smile âWe just started talking, I guess. It really happened naturallyâÂ
How long have you been acting?Â
âBut werenât you just fighting last week? And I thought you had a thing for Minjun?â Eunseok asked. He wasnât supposed to care.Â
âNo, no, Minjun is just a friendâ you answer after a moment.Â
Niki was surprised at your lack of hesitation, no signs of nervousness.Â
âWell congrats then. Iâm happy for you guysâ Jake smiled, and his acknowledgment meant the world to you.Â
You couldnât not care for him after all this time spent together. You wished you didnât care about what he thought, what he was up to, because it was no longer your place to ask or wonder.Â
âI hope Minjun doesnât feel sadâ Hana ponders, her soft heart melting for the boy.Â
You laugh at her kindness, but deep down you know sheâs right âI doubt. I think I made it clear to him that Iâm not interestedâ you reply in an attempt to calm her nerves.Â
âI hope so, heâs really a good guyâ she mumbles, a look of frustration on her face.Â
You wonder why.Â
âHe isnât but whateverâ Niki professes, a disgusted tone lacing his voice.Â
Eunseok laughs âOne day anniversary and heâs already jealousâÂ
You never expected them to be so gullible, to fall for such a fabricated lie, but here they were laughing and making jokes about the two of you. It was hard to lie to your friends, especially Eunseok and Hana, but something in your head kept convincing you that this was indeed a good idea.Â
âYou shouldâve made a big reveal at the gameâ Hana acknowledges, a sweet smile on her face as she imagines herself in your position. âOur school would win, everyone cheering you on and then boom- you run up to Y/nnie and kiss herâ she tells, a twinkle to her eyes.Â
Niki laughs, and this time it seems genuine. He likes the thought of that, but canât quite figure out why. Air is taken out of his lungs as he imagines carefully taking your jaw in one hand, and pressing a sweet kiss to your soft lips, as everyone cheers him on for leading the team to yet another victory.Â
He canât be thinking straight.Â
âThatâs a little bizarre donât you think?â Sunghoon asks Hana, remembering watching something similar with the girl.Â
Hana shakes her head, and he just chuckles at her persistence âIâm just giving him ideas, subtlyâÂ
âVery subtleâ Niki answers, and she winks at him.Â
âAre we still on for the after party at yours?â Eunseok asks, turning his head towards Jake who seems to be totally out of it, as he hurriedly copies Sunghoon's chemistry homework.Â
âYeah, yeah. No matter if we winâ he mumbles, devoted to a completely different world at the moment.Â
A small smile forms on your face. You would definitely hold Niki tight, making sure no girl pulls him out of your grasp for a quick seven minutes in heaven. Itâs all fake, though. Nothing more than just a pact between two sworn enemies who want a little more peace in their life.Â
âEven if we lose, we still need to celebrate a good gameâ Niki smiles, and Eunseok smiles at his attitude.Â
âWith a captain like you my guy, we ainât never losingâ Eunseok winks at Niki, receiving a small laugh and bow from the boy.Â
You felt guilty. This was the first time in a while when everything felt so gratifying and free amongst your friend group. With the constant fighting and teasing you never seemed to notice the charming dynamic between everyone. It felt like all along the both of you were the problem, and maybe your friends accepted this suspicious relationship so quickly, because it meant they got to experience moments like this once again.Â
âWhat do these fucking hieroglifs say, I canât decipher this shitâ Jake grunts with frustration, as he pulls the notebook closer.Â
Sunghoon laughs and tries to carefully explain every line of text to Jake.Â
Maybe you were too focused on your own problems with Niki to notice that this is what couldâve been of your friend group.Â
____
You and Niki seemed to get closer as time passed.Â
The both of you didnât even notice it, the barrier between you passing by like a breeze. It came all so naturally, and you never knew youâd have so much in common with the boy you swore you hated.Â
You would accustom him to his practice sometimes, and heâd proudly show you off to all his teammates. The lines between faking it and being truthful have faded by now, confusing your heart a little. But just a little. Because at the end of the day it was fake.Â
âI think itâs time you pay me back,â Niki said, a mischievous smile decorating his face.Â
You looked at him with a confused expression âFor what exactly?âÂ
He smiles, and brings his backpack to his chest, rummaging through it to find the key item.Â
Niki was smart, very smart. He didnât earn the number three rank for no reason, proudly representing the school on the pitch and in numerous academic competitions. Yet his mind couldnât quite understand anything written in his physics textbook. He passed by fine, but it never satisfied him to cheat on his tests, and pay Sunghoon to do his homework for him.Â
âTutoring? Seriously? And what did you do to deserve it?â you asked, raising your eyebrow.Â
He smiles widely âWell I havenât seen any sappy men bothering you, so I think you owe me this oneâÂ
âI havenât seen any sappy girls bothering you either, so I thought we were evenâ you answer, not giving into his request just yet.Â
You knew youâd do it. You did everything he asked you to do.Â
âCâmon Y/n! I need your help, just this one time, please?â he pleaded, a pout on his face âI wonât be able to play in the game this week if I donât get a good grade on this testâ he adds in an attempt to convince you.Â
You laugh at his desperation, and nod your head âFine, but you owe me oneâÂ
He nods hurriedly, and pulls out all the things youâll need to give him the greatest tutoring session ever.Â
âImagine youâre driving a carâ you said sketching a simple diagram âWhen you hit the brakes, what happens?âÂ
Niki furrowed his eyebrows, and you wondered how he couldnât comprehend such a simple concept as Newton's laws. It was cute in a way.Â
âWell I slow down, but thatâs too obvious. This is probably a much more complex answer, isnât it?â he pondered the question.Â
âNo Niki, itâs that simpleâ you laugh âThatâs Newton's first law in action. An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an external force. When you hit the brakes, you apply force to the car, causing it to decelerateâÂ
His eyes lit up in understatement, as he tried to solve another question you threw at him.Â
âWas it really that hard?â you asked him with a small smile, and he hesitated at first.Â
His eyes glazed through the notebook, but soon enough he answered âNot really. It was much better when you explained it rather than Ms. LeeâÂ
âIâm gladâ you answered âIf itâs really that bad, you can ask me for helpâÂ
âIt really isnât that bad thoughâ Niki answered, with a chuckle.Â
âOh câmon you donât even understand Newton's laws, it is badâ you reply.Â
âOkay you geek, I get it. But I thought I have to deserve your tutoring?â he questioned, a small smirk on his face.Â
âYou gotta help out a dumb bitch once in a whileâ he pretends to be offended at your words.Â
Not so long ago, heâd probably blow up at you for those words. Heâd probably make a scene, resulting in everyone being uncomfortable for a good two days. This time was different. You were different.Â
âThe way you talk to me- itâs unlike youâ you inquire suddenly, after a moment of calming silence.Â
âHow come?â Niki asks, not raising his gaze from the workbook.Â
âYour voice is softerâ you smile, and he canât help but reciprocate.Â
It brings him a weird comfort. The words passing by your lips, make his heart warmer, a trickling yet pleasing feeling in his spine. He canât quite pinpoint the moment you touched his mind so intimately, erasing any barrier between you and him. Being with you felt so easy. It feels so easy, that he even forgets why he hated you in the first place.Â
âAre you coming to my game?â he asked, a new found passion for physics coursing through his veins as he solves yet another problem with ease.Â
You looked at him adoringly âObviouslyâÂ
He chuckled âIâm gladâ he looked up at you âBut I thought you hated footballâÂ
Well you did. You hated it because Niki played it. But even if he didn't ask you, youâd come.Â
âI just don't understand it, thatâs allâ you gave him a half smile, looking through his textbook for any more challenging questions for Niki to solve.Â
âYou don't have to be there if you don't want to, Y/nâÂ
You seem to enjoy the way your name slips his lips so delicately.Â
âNo no, I want to be there for you, and I think Itâd be sus if I didn't show up. Plus, Hana has some new crush and wants to see him playâ you chuckle, and so does Niki, noting that the girl falls in love with anyone and everybody.Â
âIs it Jay? Iâve seen them mingling beforeâ he questions and you shake your head.Â
âJay was last month, old news. I think his name is Sungchan? Or Seunghan, I don't knowâ you ponder the question, going back to that one conversation you had with the girl about her new love interest.Â
The possibility that heâs also not the guy she likes now is very high-her heart swooning for any man that gives her the time of day.Â
Hana was gorgeous and incredibly sweet. No wonder she had a new talking stage every week, no boy being able to handle her.Â
âSungchan. Heâs a good guy. I can approve of him, definitely better than Jayâ he recalls many situations including Jay, where the boy proved himself to be absolutely useless and weird.Â
Maybe it was his team captain complex, but Niki seemed to notice many things that others didn't. His duty was to take care of his teammates, so catching onto the tiniest things was inevitable.Â
âWhatâs wrong with Jay?â you question, and he laughs wondering if the words will even peer out of his mouth.Â
âHeâs like, fucking pervertedâ he laughs âWell maybe not that badly, but still, heâs just proper dodgyâÂ
You're shocked at his admission, and internally glad your best-friend got over him so quickly.Â
Your conversation with Niki seemed to flow so easily. You never had to try hard, something always slipping off your tongue, his personality making it so easy. You never thought youâd have so much in common with Niki, so much to talk to him about. You were so fixated on something that was beyond his control, instead of pissing Jake off for being a horrible friend.Â
____Â
âI need to go to the bathroom quickly before the game startsâ Hana said hurriedly, her small figure rushing towards the bathroom, making you smile to yourself.Â
You blush. You remember the brief mention Hana made, expressing the want for a more romantic expose of the relationship between you and Niki. You wonder if Niki remembers too.Â
Usually you never cared for the highschool football games, skipping in order to study more or spend time with your best-friend. This time was different, you felt like a trophy to your oh-so-fake boyfriend, excited to see what comes after he scores a winning touchdown.Â
âCan we talk?â Minjunâs voice takes you by surprise, making you stop in a halt.Â
âUh, sureâ you reply, taken aback by the sudden serious tone and demeanor, knowing him from the bubbly personality and sweet voice.Â
âI know youâre faking itâ your heart sinks âWhy are you doing this? Why are you doing this to yourself? Seriously, Niki?â he asks, and you go completely silent, trying to figure out a reasonable answer to his accusations.Â
âI donât know what youâre talking about Minjun,â you say after a moment of uncomfortable silence.Â
A frown tugs at the corners of his mouth. He didnât expect that reply. He doesnât know what he really expected in the first place.Â
âFor whatever reason you are doing this, you couldâve just asked me. Why didnât you ask me? I wouldâve helped you, no matter how stupid it isâ he kept going, and it felt like you were digging yourself deeper into this lie.Â
He remembers standing in this same place, your hand hitting his arm playfully, your eyes lighting up at anything he said. In some way, he feels just as barren and vulnerable in your silence as he had that day.Â
âMinjun, I think you should go join the rest of the team. Theyâre probably looking for youâ you answered, wondering why Hana hasnât come to save you by now.Â
âI really liked you Y/n. Like really fucking liked you. I donât know why you're doing this, especially why youâre helping out that asshole Nikiâ he added quietly, as Hana came up to the two of you.Â
âMinjun!â she smiled at him, and he forced one himself âFighting Minjunnie! Iâm rooting for you! We both are!â she cheered.Â
âSurelyâ he said, leaving the two of you.Â
Hana turned to you confused with Minjun's sudden ignorance âDid you two fight or something?â she asked.Â
âItâs nothing. I think heâs just stressed outâ you replied calmly, leading the girl out to the bleachers.Â
You tried to focus. You tried to be the perfect (fake) girlfriend for Niki, as he played one of his most important games, but Minjunâs words sunk so deep. They were all you could think about.Â
You couldn't quite figure out why you didn't just admit it. Why didn't just tell him everything and end the bet with Niki? You wanted to so badly before.Â
âSungchan is playing like a bitch right nowâ Eunseok commented, disappointed with his friends performance.Â
âDon't say that, Eunseok!â Hana slaps his forearm and he laughs at her anger.Â
At least you knew she was still crushing on him, instead of Jay.Â
âNo seriously, what is going on with that manâ Sunghoon said, squinting slightly, his eyes trailing behind Sungchans figure.Â
Hana kept hushing them, begging for her friends to not speak so badly about her soon-to-be husband. You found it adorable, noting to ask Niki to set her up with him.Â
âOur boy is doing so well though. Maybe he actually needed a girl in his lifeâ Eunseok smiled at you.Â
You felt a heat rush to your cheeks at his words, wondering if he actually performed any better this time.Â
Maybe he was trying to show off in front of you? Or make you proud?Â
âHeâs been training like crazyâ you say, and they keep hyping him up.Â
âJakey, are you okay?â Hana asked the boy sitting next to you, concerned when she noticed his tired face.Â
He smiled âIâm fine, Hana. Donât worryâ he said fondly âLook Sungchan is waving at youâ he pointed, the girl immediately turning her figure towards him to wave back.Â
âDid you just see that? He waved at me! Sungchan waved at me!â Hana gleamed excitedly, Eunseok looking at her with disgust.Â
âI canât believe you like his bitchassâ he half-smiled, shaking his head in a playful act of disbelief.Â
âAren't you two friends? Oh Iâm so telling him about thisâ she replied, and he put his hands up.Â
âMaybe your fantasy will come trueâ you inquire, and Hanaâs mind races back to the moment she imagined a dreamy kiss on the field.Â
âWith the way heâs playing, I doubt there will be anything to celebrateâ Jake said, and Hana hummed tiredly.Â
âCan you guys leave him alone? Heâs tired, okay?â she mused, and everyone nodded, done with teasing the girl.Â
You canât help but stare at Niki. Even with the heavy gear, he still manages to look good. When did he get so attractive? How come youâve never noticed the pretty little mole on his chin, his gorgeous lips that begged for your touch, and eyes that grew whenever he talked about something he loves. He was right in front of you this whole time.Â
You practically begged for Minjunâs attention just a couple weeks back, yet now you felt yourself fading away from the feelings for him. You canât bring yourself to come up with any conclusion, or to bother with distractions, but why? Why was it so hard to just accept the truth as it was: you wanted Niki to want you.Â
The game was nearing the end, and Niki could already smell the victory coming his way. He wanted to make you proud, he wanted to see your smile while you ran up to him, praises spewing from your mouth as he hugs you tightly. He hated that it was all fake, the realization dawning upon him; he wants you to want him.Â
But he knows deep down that itâll never be the two of you.Â
A loud horn breaks your trail of thoughts, the audience screaming happily as Niki scores the winning touchdown. It was just like how you imagined, wondering if heâll actually kiss you now. You know you wanted him to.Â
He took off his helmet, his hair ruffled, beads of sweat falling down his face, but a wide smile when he spots you with a wide grin striding towards him. Itâs just like he imagined.Â
He doesnât know what to do. Everyone is looking, and this is the moment he could victoriously hold you. It would make his ego grow, the perfect highschool popular kid image never dwindling, but what would you think of it? God what if you pushed him off of you in front of everyone.Â
As much as he could prevent things from happening or predict anything, he couldnât have known that you would be the one to initiate his deep rooted fantasy. He couldnât have prepared himself for your pretty lips that pressed against him in a chaste, sweet kiss. You felt so good against him, and he couldnât find himself pulling away. He never expected himself to enjoy such a fucking cliche moment- but here he was, wanting more and more.Â
He wants to tell you everything in that moment- how he wanted this too, how heâd imagined your lips against his, and how he wants to kiss you everywhere. He knows he could. Heâd even blame it on the slip of his unruly tongue. Yet there was a boundary heâd have to walk upon, a fear of losing you prevailing his selfishness. He knows he wonât.Â
âWh-â he tries, and fails to still his breathing. Niki hopes you canât hear the tremble in his voice âHow was it?â he asks, his voice unsteady. He doesnât care though.Â
âYour game or the kissâ you smile, and he wonders how you can be so calm about this.Â
He smiles shyly âBothâÂ
âStopâ you laugh and he feels himself float above his body âYou did greatâÂ
âAll for youâ his response is amorous.Â
Niki canât help but laugh at your silence, watching you replay those words in your head. He pats your head, and throws his arm over your shoulder.Â
How could any of this possibly be fake?Â
âGood fucking game dudeâ Eunseok exclaimed, with a bright smile on his face, as everyone else decided to join you by Nikiâs side.Â
You looked around, a giddy and gleeful Hana, hugging a tired and sweaty Sungchan, as he smiled at her affection. Everyone had happily come down to congratulate the team, but Minjun was nowhere to be seen. Maybe you never intended to hurt him, but you so obviously did.Â
âJake you better fucking continue this energy at your disgustingly rich mansionâ Sunghoon warned, and Jake smiled at his words.Â
âYou donât have to worry about thatâ he replied contentedly, and you were glad to see him like this.Â
Jake was rich. Like really fucking rich. To the point that he was offended when âeat the richâ was trending, defending that he didnât choose this life. His mansion in the hills was the go to spot for summer and any other party.
But then again, itâs not like he didnât have people to clean up after everything goes silent.Â
_____Â
âY/n!â you turned, your eyes meeting Wonbinâs, as you entered the kitchen you knew better than anyone present.Â
You smiled, as the boy moved in your direction holding a red solo cup.Â
Wonbin was your designated drink mixer and party buddy for whatever event hosted by whoever. You wouldn't call him a close friend, rather a person youâd talk to only on a special occasion.Â
âWhere your boyfriend at?â he asked with a grin, making you chuckle.Â
The word didn't make your heart feel weird anymore. It felt so natural, normal, and sometimes youâd even forget it was all fake. For the past couple of weeks youâve learned to forget easily, not wanting to pick apart Nikiâs actions to maybe notice a pattern. You didnât want to accidentally misinterpret.Â
âProbably playing some stupid game in the living roomâ you sighed, hoping to get a little more out of him this time.Â
You knew that the fake relationship was coming to an end, it already had gone on for way too long.Â
âMhmâ Wonbin hummed, resting his body on the kitchen counter âItâs fake isnât it?â he asked, taking you by surprise.Â
You had absolutely no idea what to say. Wonbin really wasn't a part of any friend group you knew or were in, so what was the shame in telling him the truth? But itâd hurt your pride too much to say the truth out loud.Â
You avoided eye contact, not knowing what reply would secure your safety and not damage your pride. Your silence made Wonbin laugh âCâmon, you can tell meâÂ
âItâs so embarrassingâ you admit, and he shakes his head.Â
âNot really. Thereâs plenty of girls who dream of this whole fake dating type of shitâ he defended, and it made you smile lightly.Â
He was right. There were girls out there who fantasized about a fake relationship, and there definitely were also girls who dream about a relationship with Nishimura Riki.Â
Even though you initially hated his guts, maybe you were lucky after all?Â
âI just can't comprehend the fact you chose Niki out of all people to be your fake boyfriendâ he chuckled, and took a sip of his own drink.Â
âIt was his idea, I promiseâ you replied, and Wonbin mouthed a âno fucking wayâ, unable to imagine Niki, the person who swore he hated everything about you, ask you to be his fake girlfriend.Â
âPeople can be really annoying, and I guess we just had some things in common after allâ you added, and he nodded, still trying to visualize the situation you described.Â
In a way it felt good to tell someone. You had been hiding it for so long, the lies eating you alive.Â
It had been so long that you didn't even know what had become of this initially fake relationship. The line had already been blurred a long time ago, and it was hard to move along it at this point. He had done so many things, in private, that you didn't know where you stood anymore.Â
âI can tell you actually like himâ Wonbin admitted, once again taking you by surprise âThe way you talk about him, itâs differentâÂ
âYou act so smart and psychological, itâs so annoyingâ you huffed, and turned away from him, chugging the drink he had previously made for you.Â
He laughed âThe truth hurts, doesn't it?âÂ
âI donât like Nikiâ you said, trying to sound as confident as you could, but Wonbin saw right through you anyway.Â
He didn't want to continue the topic, knowing he had already exhausted your limits. You also knew that no matter what, admitting something like that out loud wouldn't be easy either.Â
The built up hatred and anger you had for Niki, couldn't have just disappeared so easily after a couple conversations and hangouts. But it did. And it frustrated you so much.Â
âYou guys playing spin the bottle in the living room with us?â a red faced Hana asked, peeking her head into the kitchen slightly.Â
âWith us, meaning?â Wonbin asked, making Hana slightly stumble into the kitchen.Â
She started putting down her fingers âWell me, obviouslyâ she smiled âSungchannie, thank godâ she let out a steady, thankful breath âSome girls, Oh Jia, Lee Chae, I donât really recognize the rest. Oh, and Eunseok, Yang Jungwon, Minjunnie and some othersâ she went on, her drunken state making the explanation much longer than it should've been.Â
âNo, no, no! Niki too! Y/n you need to come!â she exclaimed, eyes wide. She took your hand and pulled you with her.Â
You looked at Wonbin pleadingly, and with a small smile he trailed right behind the two of you. He always claimed to be âtoo oldâ for those type of games, but always ended up staying till the end of any.Â
Park Wonbin was truly full of shit.Â
Your eyes met Nikiâs as he sat in the circle, his back pressed against the couch. You looked at him, mouthing âwhat are you doingâ and he pointed to Oh Jia sitting across from him.Â
You knew she liked him, and it definitely didn't make you happy.Â
âI can see some couples here, yall into shit like this?â Jungwon asked, eyeing not only you and Niki, but Hana and Sungchan who seemed to have already made the news that went around school.Â
You chuckled quietly and shook your head âItâs nothing that serious, just a stupid gameâÂ
âIt will be serious for you soonâ Jia mumbled, her friend turning to her with a shit eating grin.Â
Oh if they only knew how absolutely out of it they looked. What the fuck were they even talking about anyway.Â
âI donât think we should be playing thisâ you whispered to Niki, who previously patted down a seat for you next to himself.Â
âLook how many people are playing, doubt me or you will get chosenâ he smiled, and you nodded.
Still, isn't the sole fact you are even agreeing to participate weird? Shouldnât you be mingling in a closet somewhere deep inside the house? God what was he thinking. This was so unbelievable, and you weren't surprised that Wonbin had caught on.Â
âMe first!â Hana cheered excitedly, as Eunseok had finally brought a bottle to play with.Â
You looked over at Sungchan, who had a sad expression on his face. You could see his eyes praying on the bottle to land on him, his hands trembling with each spin. It was cute.Â
The Gods above must have heard his prayers, the bottle landing on him with no doubt.Â
He smiled and leaned into your bestfriend to plant a quick kiss on her lips. She pouted and grabbing his head, pushed for more. Maybe she was drunk, but you knew sheâd remember this well. Although a witness, youâd hear about it for a long long time.Â
âIâm guessing you donât want to spin, Sungchan?â Eunseok chuckled, and the boy holding onto Hana, shook his head no.Â
âTwo players down so quicklyâ a boy with black hair, who you didn't recognize, commented.Â
While Jungwon went in to spin, your eyes caught Minjunâs. You couldn't read him, his expression stone cold. He was either mad at you or didn't care. Thatâs the thing, you didn't know.Â
âStop looking at himâ Niki whispered, cutting your moment with Minjun short.Â
âI think heâs mad at meâ you said, and Niki furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.Â
âWhy?â he asked, eyeing Minjun down.Â
âHe figured it out, you know, figured us outâ you replied, putting emphasis on the word âusâ âI didn't admit, obviously, and thatâs why I think heâs mad. Heâs convinced I played him on purposeâ you added, and Nikiâs gaze softened.Â
âIâm sorryâ he said quietly, his eyes falling onto his lap.Â
You looked at him confused, âWhat are you talking about?âÂ
He finally looked over at you, his face displaying a half smile, that felt cold to you âI ruined your chances with Minjun. I guess I was only thinking about myself back then, so Iâm saying sorry. I can talk to him when this is overâ he answered, and you felt your heart break.Â
He didn't like Minjun, you knew it very well. Minjun knew it too. But somehow he felt bad for the both of you. If only he knew how much you didn't care about Kim Minjun at this moment. How much you actually cared about the boy next to you. Maybe if he knew he wouldn't feel so sorry, you thought.Â
âYou don't have to be sorry, Niki. We both wanted thisâ you smiled, and squeezed his hand.Â
âI can tell Niki really wants to go nowâ Sunghoon exclaimed, and hurried Niki to spin the bottle.Â
The boy hesitated, looking over at you. You nodded for him to go ahead with a smile. God was this weird? You agreeing to your (fake) boyfriend playing fucking spin the bottle. Not only that , but playing with him. This was so stupid.Â
He took the small soju bottle, and spinned it lightly. He prayed it would fall on you.Â
Or one of his bros, no homo of course.Â
The music was blaring, and you hoped that bottle could feel your intense stare, successfully landing on you.Â
As much as luck was on Sungchanâs side today, he seemingly took all of it with him earlier. The bottle pointed straight at Oh Jia, the girl who was known for her little obsession with Niki.Â
She looked at you with a disgusting smile, and moved her body towards Niki. He looked at you, and you didn't even know what to say. You couldn't tell him no, he wasn't yours after all.Â
âSorry, Y/nâ she muttered, and you felt your blood boil at her annoying, high pitched voice.Â
She moved even closer, but her actions were stopped with Niki moving the bottle's nozzle to point at you.Â
He didn't even let you or Jia speak, eagerly going in to kiss your lips he missed so much. It hasn't even been 3 hours since you initiated the first one, but his lips starved for your touch. You could feel it. You could feel the desperation in his movements. The taste of his chapstick mixing in with the saliva, it was much more passionate than last time.Â
âPayback for last timeâ he mumbled, pulling away, his voice unsteady.Â
You looked at him dumbfounded. What the fuck did he just do? Was this another stunt to show off his cool, popular boy persona, cause it seemed just like that. But you couldn't blame him either, you started it.Â
No matter what, it felt good, and you wondered how to get yourself to stop.Â
âThatâs cheating!â Jiaâs friend exclaimed, crossing her arms.Â
âThe bottle is clearly on her, I don't know what you're talking aboutâ Wonbin defended, and you smiled at him.Â
Jia huffed, leaving the game along with her friend.Â
âWeâll leave tooâ you said, watching them go upstairs.Â
Jungwon sighed âIâm forced to kiss the boys nowâÂ
You looked around, not a single woman in the circle that was initially full.Â
You pulled Nikiâs hand, taking him to an empty room. He felt confident at that moment, rehearsing his confession in his head. He was going to tell you. He was going to tell you, and it was going to be amazing. Youâd listen to him in awe, and then agree to be his actual girlfriend.Â
âI have something to tell youâ he said, as you closed the door behind yourself.Â
He sat down on the bed, and you stood in front of him âMe tooâÂ
âYou go firstâ he smiled, and you looked out the window, the words lingering at the tip of your tongue.Â
You wanted to tell him how you actually felt. But you knew you couldn't. You were enemies, nothing more.Â
âWe should end this,â you said after a moment of silence.Â
_____Â
Things had gone back to normal.Â
You didnât expect much from Niki, guessing heâd either be overly nice to you, expressing his thankfulness for helping him get rid of annoying fangirls, or go back to being annoying himself.Â
But he was neither. He didnât say anything. Just like he didnât say anything that day, he had gone completely quiet ever since. Instead of teasing you, he ignored you.Â
He ate lunch with the football team, and it hurt you to see him laugh purely with them. It even seemed like he had gotten along with Minjun, which confused you even further. They hated each other, but now? It seemed like they were just laughing at your misery, getting high off of seeing you like this. Was this just a huge plan to get you looking like a complete loser?
Maybe he shouldâve been sorry that day, not only did you lose Minjun, but everyone of your fanboys at this school. That sounded awful, but it was partially true.
You two had only revealed the 'breakup' to your closest friends, not exactly reaching any agreement regarding the rest of the students.Â
You could pretend to be mad at him in front of your friends, but it hurt you so much. It hurt to see him behave like this towards you, knowing you did nothing wrong. You two were never real, so why was he so different so suddenly. You just hoped that it was a performance for your friends to make it more believable, but as days went by, you started to doubt it.Â
âThis is a sign that I shouldnât regret not dating Hana,â Sunghoon chuckled, looking over at the table Niki was seemingly having more fun at. He never laughed like this with all of you.Â
Was it all for show?
âFuck offâ you mumbled, looking down at your lunch, which was vastly unappetising today.Â
âItâs not your fault, Y/n, donât worry. For all I know, it was probably his fault anywaysâ Jake said, which made you suddenly look up from your food for the first time in a while.Â
âYou defending me?â you chuckled, and he shrugged.Â
You looked over at Niki once again, attempting to catch him looking at you too.Â
But he canât. He canât bear to look at you. He can only think about the dark heat of that room, your words ringing in his ears. Resisting the searing force that wanted, more than anything, to try and tell you again.Â
âGod, this is so annoying!â Hana exclaimed âY/nnie didnât do anything, and heâs acting like a pussy all of a suddenâÂ
She pouted, a weird vibe circulating all of you today. It felt like you were mourning him in some way.Â
You felt your phone vibrate in your pocket, a text message from Minjun lighting up your homescreen. It was ironic, a picture of you and Niki on your lock screen, a message from Minjun decorating it.Â
Minjun: Can we talk?Â
You thought about replying, the scenarios of him playing a stupid prank on you along with Niki replaying in your mind. Nevertheless, you texted back a short confirmation, and locked your phone.Â
You could feel his eyes on you, as you set your phone down on the table.Â
âŚ
âWhat did you want to talk about?â you asked, your voice unsure of the situation.Â
It felt familiar, meeting in the equipment room, but this time instead of Niki who had the prettiest face out there, it was Kim Minjun.
âI knew it was fakeâ he said, and you felt a heat rise to your cheeks.Â
You looked away from him, your eyes landing on the window. The sky was gray, the sun no longer shining in through it.Â
âI donât want to talk about this again, Minjun,â you sighed, tired of the topic already. Especially tired of talking about it with him.Â
âNo thatâs not the pointâ he stopped you from leaving, you turned towards him once again.Â
âThen what is it Minjun? Did Niki tell you all about it? Did he tell you how stupid I was to fall for him, even though it was all fake? Did you get me to come here only so you could make fun of me for being so naive? Is that what it is?â you blurted out. You had suddenly lost control over your words, your response coming out much harsher than you intended.Â
âWhat are you talking about? Do you seriously think Iâm plotting behind your back with Niki?â he asked hurriedly.Â
Now that he said it, out loud, it sounded so stupid. You knew Niki long enough to know he hates Minjun more than he has ever hated you, and would never ever make any deal with him.
âMaybeâ you huffed, turning from him âI donât know Minjun. Can you just say it already?âÂ
He sat down on the chair in the far right corner, his hand signaling for you to come closer, patting down the chair next to him.Â
âI guess I did sort of figure it out, the fact that what you and Niki had was fake. But he told me about it himself recently. He also said you didnât intend to hurt me, and that he forced you to do this whole fake dating thingâ Minjun relayed the message, and you didnât know Niki would remember your conversation during that stupid game.Â
Niki was evidently mad at you for ending things with him, but encouraging Minjun to try with you once again? That was what pissed you off the most, you couldnât figure him out in any possible way. One day you canât figure out the actual intention behind his words, exchanging sweet words and kisses, and the other, going back to complete strangers. Not even enemies, strangers.Â
âHe really said that?â you asked, and Minjun nodded âI really didnât want to hurt you Minjun. Iâm sorry for leading you on, in some way. I shouldâve never agreed to it in the first placeâ you add, avoiding eye contact with the boy.Â
You hear him chuckle, and with a furrow to your eyebrows you look up at him.Â
He smiles âItâs not your fault I already know that much. I shouldnât have blown up on you before the match like that anyways. It truly is none of my business who you hang out withâ he assured, and it made you feel a little better.Â
âI know, but I just hope you can still speak to me comfortably after thisâ you gave him a small smile, still unsure of your situation with him.Â
âIâm not going to try and get with you again though, don't worryâ he said calmly, and although you knew it, it still felt weird to hear.Â
You chuckled âNot to sound selfish, but why? Am I not cute anymore?â you pouted sarcastically, and he laughed.Â
âI can see you like him, like a lot. I even felt stupid for saying those things to you, cause you made it so believable at the party. The way you look at him, the way you speak to him, thatâs not fake. All of it is real, and I wouldnât want to stand in the middle of thatâ he answered, and you felt your heart skip a beat.Â
And you thought you were good at hiding it.Â
âNiki doesnât feel the same thoughâ you gave him a sad smile, fiddling with the material of your sweater.Â
âYou think so?â he asks, but it doesn't necessarily sound like a question.Â
You hum in agreement, and he chuckles lightly âThe same goes for him. Trust me itâs real. I can see it, hear it and feel it. The way his voice was so sad yet hopeful when he spoke to me about you, I know he likes you. Niki is just really stubborn, and heâd rather live in misery and not tell anyone instead of just admitting his feelings to you, or honestly anyone elseâ he explains, and you feel your heart start to beat faster.Â
Was he right? Did Niki like you? Or did Minjun have a terrible judge of character and all this way a complete bullshit.
âWhat should I do then? Gosh this is so annoyingâ you sighed, combing your fingers through your hair.Â
âTell him? What else is there to do? If Iâm wrong, which Iâm notâ he smiled proudly â-and he doesnât like you, I owe you big timeâ he offered.Â
âI donât know if I should take that risk, thoughâ you said, and he rolled his eyes playfully.Â
âDo you really want it to be like this for the rest of highschool? God, if he doesnât like you, youâll just find someone betterâÂ
Easier said than done.Â
But maybe he was right. At the end of the day you had nothing to lose, so why not just tell him?
âFineâ you grumble, and he laughs, taking your hand to pull you out of the room, before any teacher finds you.Â
_____
You had left a note in his locker the next day, too scared to face him yourself.Â
You waited, hiding your body behind the huge column, peeking to see if he had come to grab something from his locker already.
You felt like one of his fangirls. Giggling to yourself, as you awaited the arrival of your mighty savior, Nishimura Riki, hoping you are the one he picks. Hoping that he reads your note, and whispers an âI like you tooâ rosy cheeked, hot breath and all.Â
How did you get like this? You curse yourself for letting something so seemingly small, so innocent, writhe under your skin and possess your mind.Â
You didnât catch it, lost in your mind, envisioning the numerous scenarios that could occur after he receives your note.Â
He sighs with annoyance, a note filling his locker, it had been so long since he received one, it felt unfamiliar. Niki was frustrated, hoping that the notes werenât making a sudden comeback.Â
He opens it, curious as to what it may be. He couldnât help it, wanting to remind himself of the feeling reading confessions like this brought him. But what he didnât expect was to see your name written on it.Â
He thought it may have been a prank, a stupid way to get you back together made up by your dear friends, but it wasnât. This was your handwriting, the same one that wrote all his physics notes and study guides.Â
âNiki, itâs Y/n. This is weird isnât it? Like me writing notes to you. I hope you donât see the pink envelope, and throw it out like you always do. But Iâll know if you do, anyways. Well first of all I wanted to apologize. I donât even know what for, so this may be stupid, but I feel like I should. You looked so sad, and I know itâs because of me. So Iâm sorry, Niki. If I did something wrong, something to hurt you, please tell me! Anyways, I wanted to tell you something. I like you Nishimura Riki. Iâve liked you for a long, long time now, but I myself didnât know it just yet. But Iâm saying it now, and I'm very much sure of it. I guess it took some stupid physics tutoring, geeky Wonbin and finally Minjun whom you hate so much for me to realize. God, maybe I shouldnât talk about him in a note where I confess to you? Forget it. I didnât kiss you that day to show off, I kissed you because I really freaking wanted to. And it felt so good when I did. So please donât think I ended things with you that day because you kissed me, no, not at all. I guess I just couldnât stand this relationship being fake, because to me, all the things I did were real. You donât have to reciprocate, or even say anything, I just wanted you to know. And I would hope you feel the same, but itâs okay if you donâtâÂ
His mouth runs dry.Â
It explodes in his chest all at once; how bad he wants to grab a fistfull of your blazer, stroke his fingers against your ivory jaw, and kiss you senseless. He would rub his thumb against your swollen lips, and tell you how much he likes you.Â
He looks around, spotting your shoe slightly peeking out from behind the column a little ahead of the lockers.Â
âBaek Y/n!â he shouts, and you're suddenly brought back to reality.Â
Your mind had been rushing for so long, you didnât even notice Niki walking up to his locker, and managing to even read the whole note.Â
You slightly peek your head out, and catch his eyes already looking at you. He strides towards you quickly, and you canât tell if heâs mad or happy. He holds the note in his hand tightly as he stands in front of you.Â
âWhat is this?â he smirks, and you still canât tell if heâs about to make fun of you or return your feelings.Â
You shrug, looking away from him.Â
âItâs cute. You even put those stickers we bought at the stationery store on itâ he points out, chuckling, and grabs your hand so you can face him again. âWhat do you think Iâll say now?â he tilts his head, and you find it incredibly attractive.Â
âI donât knowâ you murmured, unsure of the situation you have gotten yourself into.Â
âLetâs seeâ he scans the note again âI think I like you tooâ he smiles, and you donât know if heâs fucking with you or not.Â
âYou think?â you ask, copying his action by tilting your head slightly.Â
He laughs âAre you really going to make me say it?âÂ
You nod with a smile âMmmâÂ
âYes Y/n, I like you. I donât think I like you, I definitely like you. Iâve also liked you for a long time, but I didnât want to admit it because I knew you probably didnât. And that day, when you ended things, I wanted to tell you. But Iâm glad you did it, even if I had to wait a little longer. That fake relationship was fucking with my head big timeâ he answers, and you feel stupid for not letting him speak first that day. You couldâve avoided this whole misunderstanding.Â
But things happen for a reason.Â
âAre you being for real?â you ask, and he chuckles.Â
He grabs your shoulders âVery realâÂ
You pull him closer, tightly embracing his body. He smiles, the familiar scent hitting his nose. Nikiâs cheeks are glowing red, and he canât hide his toothy smile.Â
âSo would you want to be my girlfriend, like my real girlfriendâ he asks, his voice muffled by the material of your sweater.Â
You laugh lightly at his tone âI donât knowâŚ. You tell meâ you tease, and he pulls away to look at you with a small pout.Â
âCmon, just tell meâ he pleads.Â
âYes Niki, I want to be your real girlfriendâ you answer, emphasizing the word ârealâ.Â
Now you could finally enjoy him, and by the way your heart beat, this time you were certain it was real.Â

Latency Lingering {F.W}
Chapter II - Cold Comfort
Synopsis: after your run-in with Molly earlier in the afternoon, things come to a head when the very man you'd hoped to never see again shows up at your front door, breathless and demanding answers. And thus, your once so peaceful life comes to a sharp and grinding halt, rather likely for good.
When you looked back on it, your final happy evening with Fred was absolutely chock full of the kind of irony that could make a grown man weep.
It was something you'd scarcely considered prior to the birth of your children, the stinging pain of it all dulled by the persistent dread brought on by the promise of an unsupported birth and the overhanging threat of your ex finding out about the secrets you were keeping from him.
But, of course, that dread hadn't lasted forever, and mere weeks after the birth of your son and daughter you had found yourself suddenly consumed by the near hilarity of the tragedy that had befallen your love life, and the ever present sense of irony that hovered over it like a cloud.
After all, it had been on your last joyful evening with your former boyfriend that the then seemingly far off topic of pregnancy had come up, the weight of it manageable for what you had not then known would be the final time.
It had been a warm spring night, and although the weather had been pleasant enough as of late and the promise of your worst school year yet coming to a close never ceased to bring a sigh of relief to your lips, you couldn't help but feel completely miserable.
For weeks at that point, you had been dealing with utterly debilitating nausea (and the less than welcome side effects associated with it) all throughout your days, and though your love always did his best to support you, you could sense his hesitance and worry over your health as the date planned for he and his brother's conjoined escape drew nearer.
Thus, when you'd found yourself in the gryffindor common room pulled tight against his chest, you'd simply melted into him like a scoop of ice cream dropped upon sticky asphalt.
It always made you feel at least a little better, you'd found, to have him near, and you could tell that he was put at ease whenever he felt your familiar weight against him, a subtle reminder that you were alright even in spite of the illness that plagued you.
He would never admit it, and for you, he didn't have to, but Fred Weasley was a worrier, and a skilled one at that.
So, in order to stave off that worry in favor of spending his second to final evening with you at Hogwarts in better spirits than he otherwise might, he'd begun rattling off utterly ridiculous theories regarding the cause of your long term illness, the likes of which ranged from not having received enough kisses as of late, to bearing witness to Draco Malfoy's face each day.
Though, it was your darling's final theory that had truly managed to capture your attention.
"Ugh, don't even joke about that, Fred. It isn't nearly as funny as you think it is."
You'd huffed out with a light groan of semi-exaggerated despair, unable to stop yourself from rolling your eyes as your then boyfriend had laughed in response, tossing a lithe arm, strengthened in part by his history with quidditch, no doubt, across your shoulders.
"Whoâs joking?"
He'd inquired with a feigned sincerity, his hand raising up to splay across his chest as if appalled.
"This is a matter of utmost seriousness, I'm afraid."
At that, you'd scoffed.
Fred Weasley, engage with a matter of "utmost seriousness"? Unlikely.
"Itâd most certainly better not be. I am far from ready to have your child, Weasley."
Your boyfriend had hummed in response, the look of gleeful mischief in his eyes hard to miss.
You braced yourself for whatever ridiculous thing he was about to say.
"Really?"
He'd questioned as if truly baffled by your (sensible) admission.
"Well, you certainly could have fooled me the way that you- ack!"
Suddenly realizing exactly where he was going with that statement, youâd all but lunged to cover up his mouth before he could finish, not too keen on the idea of random passerbys hearing of your (admittedly rather active) sex life.
Still, Fred had dodged your "attack" quite easily, grinning wide as you'd fixed him with your most intimidating glare,
"I'm being serious, you git. You'd have to be mad to find something so disastrous amusing enough to joke about."
To that, Fred had simply shrugged, pulling you ever closer with the arm he'd kept wrapped around your now slightly tensed shoulders.
"I think we may just have different interpretations of what is disastrous, my dear."
He had teased, breaths tickling the baby hairs that grew atop your head,
"I have it all planned out, you know."
You'd hummed at that, eyes twinkling with curiosity as you turned your head to better see the man sitting beside you.
"Oh?" You'd asked, "Do tell."
Fred had chuckled, leaning his cheek against the top of your head as he spoke.
"First, we get the bloody hell out of here."
He'd teased, knowing full well just how much closer his impending absence was in comparison to your own.
"And then, as we'll doubtless be wealthy and well adjusted men by the time you graduate in a few weeks time, you'll move in with George and I, doing whatever job you please until I either convince you to work at our wildly successful shop, or you really do fall pregnant. Whichever comes first."
You'd burst out laughing and smacked your boyfriend's shoulder at that comment, noting with joy the way that he shook with his own laughter against you.
"A child before marriage, Mr. Weasley?" You'd teased once your amusement had been quelled enough to allow for speech, "I fear your mother would just about flay you for such a thing.â
The ginger had hummed in subtle confirmation at that, shrugging slightly as he replied,
"Perhaps, but I reckon she'd be utterly besotted with you for it, so you've not much to lose there besides your future husband."
"Future husband and the father of my child in this hypothetical scenario, I'll remind you." You'd teased, "I'd be rather cross with you if you fell to your mother and left me to raise Fred Jr. all by my lonesome."
Your love had grinned wide at that, raising a brow as he considered your words further,
"You think you'd give me a son first then?" He'd asked teasingly, "Because I have a feeling our first will be a girl."
You'd outright laughed again at that admission, baffled and highly amused by your boyfriend's utter certainty in regards to your future.
"Ah, my apologies. Fredette then."
The man sitting beside you scowled as if you'd said the most absurd thing he'd heard in weeks.
"I think not. Frederica perhaps."
To that, you'd groaned, shaking your head back and forth in utter exasperation.
"Absolutely not. If you'd have our daughter named after you then I'm afraid you'll have to be a bit more creative than that."
"Oh, not to worry, love."
Fred had quipped back immediately,
"As I said before, I've got it all planned out."
You opened your mouth to question the man further, but already knowing what you were going to ask, your love had spoken up before you could,
"Winnie for a girl, and Augustine for a boy."
You'd all but gawked at that, shocked by the sincerity of the man's tone as you pulled away to see him already smiling down at you.
"Why Winnie?"
You'd asked gently, watching as the gryffindor sitting beside you shrugged his shoulders,
"It's a rather cute name, isn't it? I think it would fit an adorable little ginger girl splendidly. I can already hear you calling it out across our home, chasing her down to rub sunscreen on those doubtlessly freckled cheeks of hers as she fights tooth and nail for her right to roast in the afternoon sun."
Laughing, you nodded semi-exasperatedly at the rather vivid scene presented to you,
"If she's yours I'm sure I'll be doing that and many similar tasks quite often."
You'd paused for a moment to think further before speaking up again,
"And Augustine?"
Fred smiled softly,
"I've always rather liked the name, but have never heard it used much." He began before continuing almost hesitantly, "And it certainly helps that I fell for you in the month of August, as well."
Your eyes had widened slightly at that, brow raising alongside them as you'd urged Fred to elaborate.
"August?" You'd asked, "We didn't even have school in August, Freddie."
The man sitting beside you nodded in confirmation to your words.
"I know. It was summer, I was free of schoolwork and able to terrorize Ronald, Percy, and little Ginny as much as I well pleased, but even so, the only thing I could think about was you. Can you imagine, fourteen year old me desperate to get back to Hogwarts all because I wanted to see a girl? It was not an easy realization to come to terms with, I'm afraid."
You'd scoffed at that, hand reaching over to squeeze his own where it draped across your shoulder in spite of your seemingly nonplussed reaction as you considered the proposed names further.
"Winnie and Augustine." You had murmured aloud, tasting the two names together on your tongue for the very first time. "I quite like those."
And just as he'd begun to fiddle with the promise ring adorning the hand that rested gently atop his own, your love hummed softly in confirmation.
"I knew you would."
And then, smiling as you'd closed your eyes contentedly and leaned against him, you couldn't help but let out a pleased sigh.
In spite of all the stress you'd endured as of late with Umbridge's rule, your sudden and unexplained bouts of illness, and Fred and George's impending absence, the future, it seemed, was bright.
Until, that is, the very next day, when you'd learned alone in the girls bathroom that some aspects of it would be coming far sooner than you ever could have planned for or even imagined.
That night, just over twenty-four hours after your hopeful conversation, you had broken things off with Fred Weasley, and you hadn't seen him since.
That is, of course, until today.
Because even in spite of your insistence that she not tell him anything earlier that afternoon when she'd caught you on your way out of that accursed doctor's office, it seemed that Molly Weasley had paid your pleas little mind, for it was only a few hours after you'd arrived home that Fred had turned up at your front door.
And truthfully, you knew that it was partially your own fault that he had found you with such ease.
After all, you still lived in that same flat your aunt had rented out to you during your summers away from Hogwarts, the one she used to supplement her income as she persisted with her freelance photography abroad.
Your mother, her sister, hadn't spoken to her (at least to your knowledge), since she'd refused to kick you out of it after your graduation, but the woman in question had never seemed to mind.
In truth, you hadn't yet found it within yourself to miss your children's maternal grandmother much either.
But still, even in spite of your aunt's kindness, you couldn't help but wish you'd had the forethought to move elsewhere as you stared helplessly at the man standing on the other side of your door.
He looked positively frazzled, and utterly determined.
"Fred I-"
"Tell me that she's mistaken."
The young wizard half demanded, half plead, his hand coming to rest upon the inner lip of the door as if afraid you might close it on him at any moment.
You would be lying if you said you hadnât considered it.
You swallowed thickly at his words, opening your mouth in search of a reply only to have him cut you off once more before you could even begin.
"Or better yet, tell me that she's lying and that this is all some utterly ridiculous ploy to get me to see you again after all these years. Tell me anything Y/n, just not that she's right."
Unsure of what to say, you cast your gaze downward toward the floor and away from Fred's prying eyes, and immediately he drew in a sharp breath and cursed above you, bringing his unoccupied hand to rub across his face.
The silence that descended upon the two of you afterward was thick and cloying, the absence of all sound so harsh that it nearly made you shudder, an urge you only held back because you refused to come across as weak to the man standing before you.
Which, as things went, happened to be rather difficult considering how absolutely terrified you felt.
"Truly?"
He breathed out after several long seconds of nothing,
"All this time, and you were just never going to tell me?"
Slowly, and with a shameful certainty, you nodded at that, hands clasping in front of you as your fingers worried away at the spot on your finger where your promise ring had one sat.
Old habits died hard, you supposed.
"Fred, I..."
You trailed off for a few moments, desperately seeking out the right words, only to give up with a sigh when you realized they would likely never come.
There were no "right words" for you to say in this situation. There was only the truth, as ugly as it may have been.
"I didn't know what else to do."
At that, a short burst of harsh and humorless laughter that was jarringly similar to that which he'd let out on your final night together in the astronomy tower pushed passed your ex's lips, and despite your best efforts, you couldn't help but flinch back from it, a movement which he either didn't notice, or chose to ignore entirely.
"You didn't know what else to do besides dump me with no real explanation and hide my own children from me for nearly three years of their lives?"
He scoffed, looking down at you as if in utter disbelief,
"Does that seem like the most rational decision to you, Y/n?"
In response to his mocking tone and blatant disregard for your reasoning, you looked up to meet your former lover's eyes once more, glaring daggers into them as a hand came to rest upon your hip.
"Was it a rational decision for you to set off fireworks in a school, Fred? Or for you to drop out mere months before graduation?"
You snapped, taking a step closer to the man as you pointed an accusatory finger to his chest, the space between you decreased enough now that you could smell the familiar cologne he'd always worn, the very same one you'd described while smelling amortentia all those years ago in Snape's classroom.
Fred glared right back at you after a moment of what appeared to be surprise at your sudden displeasure, but before he could even think to open his mouth again, you continued.
"How about when you decided to fight in a war that from what I heard, very nearly killed you, huh? And let's not forget to mention this very moment here, where you've turned up to my auntâs flat in search of your ex girlfriend while looking half a mad man instead of thinking to send an owl first to at least make sure that I even still live here. How rational does that seem, Fred?!"
Your voice was raised now, having been increasing in volume since you'd begun the second half of your rant, and while he had never been one for shouting, it seemed that Fred Weasley was far too concerned with not being outdone to care today.
"You're saying I should have sent an Owl?!" He asked incredulously, the laughter that left him just as barren of humor as the bout before it.
"Oh that's rich coming from you, love, because you could stand to learn a thing or two about sending important owls, it would seem!"
You scoffed, arms crossing atop your chest as you opened your mouth to reply once more, a no doubt biting remark already primed and ready to go at your lips.
As unfair as it was, after all, there was some long buried part of you that felt angry at the man standing before you.
Because even if it was entirely your own choice, you had endured nearly nine long months of pregnancy completely alone, before laboring just under two weeks early all by yourself, which of course had preceded you then raising both of your children all by your lonesome, exhausted and afraid of whatever it was that would come next, because as you'd soon discovered alongside the existence of your children, there was always something else looming on the horizon.
And it just wasn't fair.
It wasn't fair how desperately you yearned for the touch of a man now supposedly unknown to you as you laid in bed each night,
It wasn't fair how curiously your little ones asked about other children's fathers,
It wasn't fair how obviously and agonizingly they took after their dad,
It wasn't fair how you saw him briefly each time you looked into their beautiful little eyes or brushed your fingers through their soft ginger hair,
None of it was fair, not in the slightest.
But just as you were about to open your mouth and express these long buried and ignored feelings of yours, a small and painfully poorly timed voice called out from behind you.
And when you shifted your gaze to see your ex's face more clearly, all you saw expressed upon it was a deep and sorrowful dread as he stared just past you at the once empty door frame, which you hoped against all hope and sense was still bereft of life.
Of course though, you could already tell from Fred's face alone that this was not the case.
"Mummy?"
The young voice that you immediately identified as that of your son questioned curiously from behind you, and finally you swallowed your hopes and fears and turned around to face the music for what felt like the one millionth time in that day alone.
And of course, standing there, backlit by the slightly yellow glow of the bulbs from the kitchen that sat just inside, was your boy, your darling Augustine, looking the very picture of the man that stood just a few feet away from him.
His hair was an absolute mess from his clearly restless sleep, and he was rubbing at his eyes in a manner that made it nearly impossible to make out their color, but even so that inarguable likeness was there.
He looked every bit the quintessential Weasley child, and it made your heart flutter in your chest when you noticed the way that your former love seemed to take this in, as if it were a knife to the gut.
Clearing your throat to rid it of the sudden thickness that you found there, you were quick to reply.
"Yes, love?"
You murmured softly, reaching out gently to help guide the young boy to you when he began to fumble all but blindly in your direction, eyes still blurred by sleep.
"Can sissy and me sleep with you? We've had another bad dream."
At that, you frowned immediately, maternal instincts quick to take over in spite of your stressful situation.
For nearly a year now your twins had suffered from nightmares, often on the same nights, though thankfully from what they had shared with you, they at least seemed to be about differing things.
That said, it did cause you rather significant grief as a parent to see your children suffering so with something you could not even hope to control or change.
It made you feel weak, helpless, and above all else, afraid of your own potential errors or failures in raising your little one's to have something like this plague them for so very long.
Several nights a week you would awaken to the sounds of pattering feet on hardwood, petrified voices crying out your name from down the hall, or little fingers poking at your body to rouse you as one or both of your children sought out the comforts of their mother.
Most often during times like this though, you'd found that it was Winnie who came to get you, her brother (younger by a whopping nine minutes and twenty-three seconds), typically favoring bundling up beneath his covers until you went off to gather him up in your arms and carry him to your bedroom before cocooning him alongside his sister within the blanket that smelled soothingly of you and the detergent you used on it once weekly.
So, naturally, it worried you to note that it was August who sought you out on this particular evening.
Sympathetically, you cooed to the boy standing before you, reaching down to pick him up with ease before setting him familiarly upon your hip with a skill that was rather jarring to the nearly forgotten man standing with his back to the wall just opposite you and your son.
"Of course you can sleep with me, darling."
You assured him gently, rubbing his back with your still free hand as you allowed your voice to take on that soft and soothing tone that all mothers seemed to master at one point or another,
"Does sissy need me to go and get her tonight?"
Your son had just begun quietly shaking his head when the sound of small feet on tiled floors caught your attention, and you immediately turned to better see the source of it as your daughter came into view.
There, backlit in the very same way that her brother had been, stood your ever so brave and dreadfully witty Winnifred, whose hair was still up in messy pigtails from earlier that day due to her refusal to allow you to take them out at bedtime.
You often claimed that she didn't get such stubbornness from you whilst you were teasing her, but you knew deep down that such a statement was far from true.
She was, after all, just as much your daughter as she was Fred's, and it seemed that the apple did not fall far from the tree in that particular regard.
"There's my sweet girl,"
You began, squatting down to offer your unoccupied arm to her,
"Would you like a cuddle as well, then?"
And immediately, the elder of your two children all but launched herself into your arms, muttering softly of her nightmare and the fading details she recalled of it as she buried her face into your neck, relaxing herself with any and all familiaritites you carried about your person.
You shushed her gently, swaying your body back and forth with a practiced rhythm until all of the sudden, Fred's voice snapped you straight out of your reverie.
"They truly are real then."
He said softly, as if in utter disbelief of the sight unfolding before him.
Unsure of what to say, you simply nodded, avoiding his gaze to the very best of your ability as you prayed he didn't notice the quiver in your bottom lip upon hearing the hurt and confusion in his voice.
"I-"
Seeming to choke a bit on his words, Fred faltered for a moment, floundering in place until finally, he simply shook his head and sighed.
"I should go."
Your eyes widened at that, and your head quickly snapped up as the man standing before you pulled a small pen and notepad set from his back pocket, the front of it clearly stained with ink and worn from use.
No doubt for his ideas, then, you realized idly before putting a stop to any familiarity you felt for the individual standing before you.
He was a different man now, a totally new person.
You had no right thinking of him as if you still knew who he was today.
Scribbling out a few lines of text in writing that you knew all too well, the ginger sighed before tearing the piece of paper he had been using out and handing it to you.
"That there is the address to mine and George's shop and our apartment just above it. If you don't find me there, I'm likely at Mum's or somewhere just down the road. Have someone let me know if you ever stop by while I'm not in."
Shocked, you nodded absently before finally finding it within yourself to speak up once more.
"So I'm guessing you'll be wanting me to come to you about all of this sooner rather than later?"
Shrugging in a manner that you would almost describe as hopeless, Fred looked to you briefly before quickly glancing away, as if pained by the mere sight of you alone.
"I would have wanted you to come to me about our children years ago, but better late than never I suppose."
Opening your mouth as if to argue with his statement, you found that nothing worth saying would come.
Once again, it seemed he was rather justified in how he felt.
Once again, it seemed you were the bad guy for doing what you had felt was right all those years ago.
What a mess.
Seeing your apparent speechlessness, Fred simply nodded in farewell before apparating out of your apartment complex without another word, leaving you to wonder how today could have begun so typically and ended in such a life altering manner.
Such was life with twins, you supposed.

synopsis: Your birthday rolls around again, and you expect it to be a nice, relaxed day as always. But your illness hasnât been the kindest to you lately, so Dottore decides to spoil you, as best as a man like him knows how to anyway.
includes: dottore w/ gn! reader
notes: Just a fluff, self-indulgent fic of Dottore being soft for you on your birthday. Fragile reader. He comforts you a lot at the end. Last year's fic.
Birthdays were a special thing, no doubt.
It was a day that many looked forward to. It represented another year of growing older, a joyful celebration with the ones you loved as you looked forward to the future. At least, that was the case for some people. For others, they simply didnât care. Your husband was a good example. If you didnât remind Dottore every year and present him with a gift, you were sure the day would pass like any other, whether he remembered it was his birthday or not.
You, on the other hand, were probably in the middle of these two feelings. Yes, you did look forward to the day, but you supposed it had lost some of the charm it should have. It had been so many years since youâd woken up from your almost eternal rest, and even longer since you had been plagued with this sickness. Therefore all of your birthdays have been spent with the same lingering feeling in the back of your mind - when will you spend your special day in good health, free to feel and think and act in the way you truly want to? At this point, the only reason you continued to ask for a large cake was to indulge the segmentsâ sweets cravings.
Still, your birthday did make you happy, whether it was from the lavishing affection from your lovers or the gifts you received (how you survived without your beloved Headcircles for so long was beyond you.) This year would be no different. But it was obvious to the others that you had become more withdrawn and closed off than your normal self, which had come as a result of your stagnant condition.Â
Of course, Dottore himself had become more than aware of this. He was an observant man after all, even on the days he didnât see you or speak to you. He knew you, inside and out. Even now, he could understand the downcast look that sometimes sunk into your face when you thought no one was watching.Â
Which was no doubt surprising to the average person, considering the severe lack of ethical practice and empathy from the Doctor. Of course, being a scholar first and foremost, results came first, regardless of what needed to happen to obtain them. But in truth, when it came to you, he was a genuine doctor, and you were his only genuine patient, to which he had the genuine goal of treating and curing you, unlike his other subjects.Â
Therefore, due to this sincerity, it was simple for him to understand how you were affected by your illness. However, you refused to ever approach him about it first, which often led to a flood of tears later down the line, when he finally got you to stop holding back. Still, there was only so much he could do. He wasnât made to comfort, his specialty was the opposite. He wasnât a natural at producing soft words, and his hands didnât know where to go to make it all better.
Nowadays, it wasnât hard for him to admit to himself that he missed your lively and vibrant self. The person who would constantly tease and banter with him, unafraid to debate with him or be loud in their declarations with a once familiar wide smile, laying their hands all over him as they thought of the most minuscule thing to bother him with. Needless to say, Il Dottore didnât appreciate interruptions during his workâŚ
But he missed yours.Â
However, he saw the approaching date of your birthday as a good opportunity to hopefully help that person come forth once more. Of course, he was never one to really care about birthdays, until you came along. It was all those years ago when he decided that the effort you put into it was worth reciprocating even just a bit. Good work should be rewarded after all. Though this gift was certainly much bigger than his previous ones, he believed it was well deserved.
â
The day was just like any other. You had started it by watching the endless snow continue to form in heaps as the segments conducted their daily prodding at your body for checkups, and then made yourself cozy in bed in the comfort of your room. A lot of your days had been spent like this lately, too tired to walk around or entertain yourself with the segments.Â
That was okay - they still visited you from time to time. But a visit that you did not expect was from Dottore himself. You hadnât even heard him come in, only realizing his presence when his deep voice tickled your ear, making you jump and scramble to sit up properly. The fox creature that had peacefully nested near your feet was also awoken by the sudden intrusion, glaring at the man who paid it no attention.
âThat seems to be quite an absorbing book youâre reading.â He had no reaction to how he caused you a great fright.
âI keep telling you not to scare me like that,â you huffed, heart still racing from his sudden appearance and also his close proximity. He cocked his head to the side with a smile, feigning innocence, while you pouted at his response, slumping back into the sheets. Foxttore also crawled up to your side and made himself comfy there once more.
âI did knock. Multiple times, in fact,â he commented, moving to stand over you. You probably have not changed your position much since this morning. âYou didnât hear me, so I simply took matters into my own hands.â The unamused glint in your eyes managed to bring a familiar feeling into his chest.
âRegardless, while I would inquire into the contents of the literature that has you so engrossed,â he hummed, moving away from you to observe any recent additions to your room, âI have something more important to share.â
âIs that so? Have you come to tell me the update of the experiment you last spoke about?â You asked, returning your attention to your book. In reality, you already knew the answer was no - whenever it had to do with his research you could always tell whether it was from his face or tone or body language. Either he was greatly pleased, perhaps even excited when he made a breakthrough, or he was sour and annoyed if the result was the opposite.
âNo, but this is far more interesting.â The smile on his face gave you a feeling he was up to something.
âMore interesting? I doubt anything could be more interesting than your research, Dottore,â you replied, but his statement intrigued you.
âI have decided to take you somewhere.â That response made your eyes widen, perking up in surprise. The times you had been able to leave the lab were far in between due to your illness, so you treasured each time you were able to witness the glory of the chilly snowfall. This had to have something to do with your birthday, and you were already grateful. Even if your body didnât want to cooperate, well⌠youâd just force it to (hopefully.)
âWhere? Tell me where!â You swung your feet over the edge of your bed, thrilled, your pet once again whining at the loss of your warmth. âWait, actually, let me guess!â You didnât notice how pleased he was with your sudden return to life, a smile on your face as you thought about all the possibilities, longing to get away from this place.
âHmm⌠are we going to visit that delicious bakery again? And scare the townsfolk once more?â You tapped your cheek as you reminisced at the mix of petrified and curious expressions from when you two were there. It was still amusing to think about the Harbinger in such a place with you.
âNo, somewhere farther away.â
âThe theater, then? Oh, is a new play coming out? Are we gonna watch it? But I donât want to hear you complain about the plot the whole time againâŚâ Dottore merely watched, entertained by your deep in thought expression.
âNo, not that either.âÂ
âThen where? Tell me,â you gave up on guessing, trying not to kick your legs in excitement.
âWe are going to Sumeru together.â His words caused the room to go silent afterward as you blinked at him, trying to process his words. Your lips parted and then closed as you repeated what he said back in your mind, while Dottore only stared at you as if what he said was the most normal thing ever.
â... Huh? I- what?â After a bit, you couldnât help but giggle a bit at the sheer absurdity of that sentence. âHey, I know a certain segment of yours likes to joke around, but not you so much. Now tell me, where are we really going?â But Dottore didnât look phased at your denial, casually brushing his fingers against your numerous books on the shelves, only perking up once he recognized one on Khaenriâahn machinery.
âWe are going to Sumeru,â he repeated. âOnce weâre there, we can go anywhere you like. We will leave a week from today, first thing in the morning, and get there the night before your birthday. And there is no need to pack, everything will be taken care of.â Once again, you were shocked into silence, your heart rate increasing to a pace that probably wasnât the best for you.
â... Youâre serious. Youâre actually serious,â you spoke in disbelief, words coming out in a half-whisper. You stumbled to your feet until you were pressed against him, your hands gripping his shirt as you beckoned him for answers. âBut why? I mean- how? I thought I couldnât- we couldnât because of all of those things and- well, are you sure? I⌠I donât want to bother you or your work or cause any unnecessary problems or-â Your flustered self stopped talking when a large hand rested on top of your head.
âAm I not allowed to spoil my spouse?â
âS-Spoil⌠wellâŚâ The words felt so foreign coming from his lips - he could be very direct with his verbal affection if he was in the mood, but this⌠was more than what you had expected. Although you could feel your face heating up, you still couldnât help but feel you were putting an extra burden on him, and your expression made it easy for him to guess so. Dottoreâs hand moved to stroke your cheek instead, forcing you to look up at him.
âIf youâre still not convinced⌠then think of it as repayment, if that suits you. Youâve always satisfied my needs, I am merely satisfying yours as well. Or perhaps⌠think of it as me taking a vacation. Youâve always asked me to take one, no?â His voice managed to quell your worries a bit as you nodded, reaching to your cheek to squeeze his hand.Â
You still had a lot of questions - if you could even handle the whole trip with your illness - but you were sure he had already come up with all the solutions to all the problems in advance. As for how he managed to get time off⌠perhaps working as a Harbinger without taking any sort of break for centuries ended up having its usefulness in the end⌠You could just imagine the expression on Pierroâs face.
âThank you⌠thank you! I love you!â You couldnât help but hug him as tightly as you could, now knowing that you were truly leaving this place to not just anywhere but your homeland, the place you missed so much. It really did sound too good to be true⌠Dottore only chuckled at your reaction, having expected this from the moment he planned the whole trip. He held you back, smoothing your hair until you pulled away again, suddenly deep in thought once again.
âOh Zandik, I need to make a list! There are so much things I need to do and see⌠how will I have time for them all? And I need to get a nice outfit ready⌠gotta get new filters for my Kamera too⌠I have to take a lot of pictures⌠And souvenirs for all the segments! And Bina and Panta and Childe-â In a flash, you were suddenly digging through your room in order to prepare for the things you just mentioned, as well as whatever was running through that mind of you. The abomination of a creature had waddled his way over to you, discontent that his cuddles were over, but still interested in your activities.Â
Dottore only watched in amusement, simply glad to see you smiling again in a way that was wholly you, before he left you to attend to his own business.
â
To say you were restless was an understatement. You think that Dottore shouldnât have told you about the trip this early because now you were constantly dreaming about what youâd do in Sumeru. It wasnât only about Sumeru either, this was a long-awaited opportunity to spend genuine time with your husband. Although you hadnât been feeling up to much lately, the whole situation made your spirits rise.Â
But soon enough, the journey was underway. However, a small problem was that you had not been on a boat in hundreds of years. It was admittedly daunting at first - but wow, had the design of boats changed a lot over the centuries⌠you could have never thought a boat could be so fancy. Of course, Dottore was keeping his eye on you the whole time, making sure you could handle the change in environment.
âStaying out here too long wonât be good for you,â the sudden voice to the side of you made you jump a bit, before you quickly relaxed, realizing it was just Dottore. You had been just standing here every day for a while.
âThe breeze is nicer than Iâd thought it would be. And the sea⌠itâs very pretty.â You smiled, looking back at the view. Even though only boring water surrounded you two for miles, it was still a fascinating sight. You had already taken a lot of pictures, but they couldnât compare to the real thing. âI wish to continue to look at it,â you added because you already knew heâd try to pull you away and into the warmth of the cabin. He was silent at your response, and you thought youâd won him over when suddenly something heavy slipped around you.
His coat, which was much larger than you, pooled on the floor of the deck. It really wasnât necessary, considering you were already wearing your own, but who were you to decline his kind offer?
âDonât stay too long,â was his only warning, and you couldnât help but giggle as you stepped closer to him, squeezing his hand when you suddenly remembered something important.
âHey⌠speaking of, are you still motion sick, Zandik? Will you be okay?â
âI never had such a thing,â he clicked his tongue in annoyance, trying not to remember certain⌠events at the Akademiya that you still made fun of to this day.
The Fatui agents pretended not to hear your cackles and their Harbingerâs disgruntled responses the whole trip.
â
You had refused to go to sleep for hours now. Why? Because you would reach the docks of Sumeru by tonight, and you would not miss the moment for anything, even though your body was loudly protesting to get some rest. Surprisingly, Dottore didnât object too much. Obviously, heâd expected this. You were grateful that he was being lenient for once. Anxiously, you continued to wait with bated breath, tapping the edge of the boat.
And then Port Ormos came into view.Â
You were still quite a distance away but⌠you thought it was beautiful. There were boats that were even more large and luxurious, and you could hear the hustle and bustle of people still filling the port even though the moon had begun to settle in. But the lights around the port glowed magnificently, so familiar to what you remembered all those years ago. Oh, but the layout was certainly different⌠it was the same and yet it was not, change was evident but there were things that still reminded you of the past. Of⌠better times.
âDottore, do you-â As you turned around to look for him, you found that he was already next to you, watching the port come into view as well. You immediately hooked your arm around his, pulling him closer as you practically jumped up and down in excitement.Â
âThank you again, Dottore. I am truly so happyâŚâ You nuzzled your face into his arm, hoping he could feel how thankful you were. He stroked your hair with his free hand in response.Â
âJust donât stray too far tonight. You can do that tomorrow.â
When you finally got off the boat and set foot on not just any land but in Sumeru, you just wanted to go everywhere. You wanted to see everything, the new places and the old - most importantly, the ones you shared with Zandik. But you paid mind to his request and stayed in one place (mostly), instead pacing around in awe while he handled business with the agents. Besides, you didnât want to draw too much attention to yourself anyway, not with all these people here.
The house you were staying at was a distance away from the city, not too far but it also gave you two a sense of peacefulness and quiet away from all the noise. It was perfect and you loved it, as it somewhat reminded you of living in the dorms with Zandik, although the architecture had changed since then. But you were still a bit⌠unsatisfied.
âAre you sure we canât just stay up and do somethingâŚ?â You asked drowsily, fighting off the very obvious sleepiness in your voice, while Dottore pulled the blankets over you. Although you were energetic a few moments ago from the thrill of it all, tiredness had quickly settled into your body after it was over. Still, it just felt a bit annoying to waste this precious time sleeping, and you looked at your husband with pleading eyes. He seemed to think about it, before answering you.
âIf you can stay awake for ten more minutes, then we can,â Dottore indulged your request, knowing full well that you would be knocked out by then. But you seemed more than ready to take on this challenge.
âI⌠I can do that! Alright, talk to me, Zandik,â you urged him, hoping a conversation with him would help you fight the sleepiness.
âYou said that you created a list for tomorrow.â
âYeah, I did!â You tugged on his arm, pulling him closer as he was only sitting on the edge of the bed rather than lying next to you. Knowing him, he was probably going to try doing some work⌠somehow, despite being miles away from Snezhnaya. âI want to walk around the city first⌠oh, but we need to eat first. You know the good places, right? I know the segments have been here many times⌠they told you, right?â You continued to prattle on, forcing back your yawns.
âNaturally.â
âGood, good⌠we need to go into as many stores as possible. I have a lot of gifts to buy,â you rubbed your eyes to continue getting the sleepiness out of your system.
âYou do, indeed.â
âMhm. And a lot of⌠pictures,â you yawned, the fluffiness and softness of the pillows and sheets overtaking your senses. âWe should visit the forest too. If only we could explore a ruin againâŚâ
âWe will, one day in the future.â
âYeah⌠do you want to go anywhere, Zandik?â You had moved his hand that was held hostage to your cheek, enjoying the warmth.
âI already have plans for us to go somewhere later.â You forced your eyes open to blink at him in surprise.
âReally?â Despite being on the verge of slumber, that grabbed your attention very much.
âOf course.â
â...I am admittedly a bit concerned at how thoughtful youâre being, Zandik. Are you going to experiment on me when we get back?â You couldnât help but tease him, however, it was still true that this was a bit strange coming from a person like Il Dottore. You were used to receiving his love in an⌠unconventional manner, that was just Dottore-like. It was hard to explain.
âYour lack of faith in me is rather heartbreaking, [Name],â he said in a similar, more sarcastic tone. âPerhaps I will run a few tests on you later.â You giggled in protest as he began to move his hand downward, tracing lines on your neck until he rested on your pulse, teasingly stroking the area. Your laughter had turned into yawns the more the seconds went by.
âSo⌠how many minutes have passed?â
âLess than five.â
âAww⌠well, I can keep goingâŚâ your voice dipped in volume the more you spoke, your grip on his arm becoming looser as you finally succumbed to sleep. He let himself feel you for a bit longer until he pulled away, moving your body into a comfortable position so you wouldnât be sore, and then looked back to watch you.Â
The rise and fall of your chest had always been something that brought him a sense of relief. It was the tangible sense of it that reassured him, always being the man who favored facts over fallacy. Your heartbeat along with the movement of your chest, and sometimes the small noises you made, were all things he checked for once you slipped off to the land of dreams. A doctor, a scholar, or a scientist could never be too careful.
A lover could not either.
â
Although waking up early wasnât one of your favorite things, you did it anyway because this birthday wasnât something you wanted to squander. The warm morning sun spilled into the room, a feeling that was never to be found in Snezhnaya. Rubbing your eyes, you realized Dottore was again at the side of the bed getting ready, just as he was last night. Your rustling movements alerted him to your consciousness.Â
âFinally up, are you?â Dottore was always up early, well, it was more like he never went to sleep in the first place. You yawned in response before turning over to face him better, admiring his bare chest through his half-buttoned shirt, but more importantly, his lovely face that was not yet covered by that mask of his.
âMhm,â you hardly mustered a response before smiling, continuing to nuzzle into the pillows, admiring your husband who always managed to look so good to you, especially when all the finer details were highlighted by all the light coming in. It was surely a sight to see as well, watching him put on that complicated outfitâŚ
âAre you going to continue staring, or are you going to start getting ready?â His tone was more teasing for your wandering eyes rather than displeased.Â
âSo mean,â you giggled, finally sitting up and stretching before wrapping your arms around him, pressing your chest against his back. âIâm just glad the first thing I saw today was your handsome face.â He had no response as you kissed his neck, leaving soft kisses downward as his hair tickled your cheek.
âHere. Now carry me,â you pulled away and spread your arms out, patiently waiting as he turned back to look at you with narrowed eyes. âWhat? Itâs my birthday, you should listen to my requests.â He paused to examine your bright smile and hopeful grin before he acquiesced.
âAs you wish,â he replied, then wrapped a single arm around your side and hoisted you up rather inelegantly as you awkwardly dangled above the floor.
âH-Hey! Be gentle!â You squealed at the rough treatment before it turned to giggles, as you then got ready for the outing with your husbandâs help.
â
The streets of Sumeru were everything you knew yet nothing at the same time. So many people going about their lives, Akademiya students walking about as well, mumbling about their research and exams and everything that came with being a scholar. Walking up the tree-woven bridges and staring from above, the view simply too beautiful for words to describe.
ButâŚ
All of the stores and buildings you once knew were gone, replaced with new ones. You knew that after so long nothing youâd remember would still be there, but deep down you hoped for something concrete to remind you of the past, if only to ease your heart for everything you missed out on. The only thing that remained the same was the Akademiya, though it certainly looked upgraded. Speaking of the Akademiya⌠if only you could set foot there again with him⌠pretending to be a student in the House of Daena like once before⌠but those days were long gone.
âYou couldnât possibly have thought the same things from centuries ago would still be here,â he sighed as you buried your face into his shoulder with disappointment.
âWell, youâre right but, I donât know⌠there might have been a long-running family business or something,â you mumbled, appreciating his warmth and scent. At least you still had him after all the years.
âThere is no need to fret. There are many things here youâd like.â Dottore attempted to comfort you, which wasnât a lie. He knew the kind of things you were interested in. After a few moments, you shifted to look at him, nipping at his shirt before pulling away and grabbing his hand resolutely.
âHmph, I know that. Now come, we need to see if this Puspa CafĂŠ can compete with the one we used to study at,â you tugged on his arm, and he grinned, delighting in your whimsicality.Â
â
By the end of the evening, you were sure you knew the face of every vendor there was in the city. Practically everywhere had been explored by you (and Dottore in tow, who was dragged along.)
Gifts had already been acquired - your favorite being an Aranara toy for Zandy. You considered the cookbooks as a shared gift, seeing as youâd make the food for everyone. It was always quite hard to pick something out for them, this was the many versions of Il Dottore after all⌠Still, it was a good thing you had agents to carry the items back. Poor things.
You also made sure to get your fill of delicious Sumerian food as well. Sure, certain things could be imported, and there were chefs in the Fatui, but it would never taste quite as good as it did here. And oh, the pictures. There were a lot of pictures. Nothing was off the table - the scenery, the animals⌠Dottore watched in silence, tapping his finger as you even took pictures of the food. And of course, you posed next to many things but especially the kitty cats.
âThere can never be enough photos of me on your desk, Zandik. And I need to share them with all the other segments too! Now keep taking them,â you demanded, your poor Harbinger husband feeling more like your temporary maid as he fulfilled the most ludicrous requests for you, only for today of course.
âCome, come, let me see them now!â You ran back to him, eager to see the (hopefully) pretty photos. As you began to shuffle through the pictures, your smile gradually dropped while you could feel the smugness radiating from Dottore.
ââŚYouâre doing this on purpose, arenât you, Zandik?â You looked up at him, completely unamused⌠because all of the photos he had taken just now were perfectly imperfect - the wind had messed with your hair or outfit, someone interrupted, you were being harassed by a bugâŚ
âI fulfilled your request, did I not? I merely took the pictures as you asked.â You narrowed your eyes at him before pressing your finger into his chest.
âListen here you, normally I find it adorable when youâre being cheeky and annoying,â you paused to stab him again with your finger, âbut I will not tolerate it today of all days. I know we both remember the last time I gave you the treatment. Now be a good little husband and actually take good photos.â
âYouâre rather feisty today, arenât you dear?â
By now, the sun would soon begin to set, signaling the day would be coming to a close. The sky would slowly change into a brilliant hue, the perfect thing to gaze upon after a lovely day. You were⌠content, despite all the worries and less-than-nice feelings that sometimes rose to the surface, which you desperately beat back down for you didnât want to think about that now.
But you knew the day wasnât over yet. The whole time, Dottoreâs words lingered in your mind - the promise of taking you somewhere. You wondered where it was. The best you could guess was the giant Ruin Guard you two used to visit back when you two were students⌠perhaps he wanted to see it again. You would be interested in knowing if that note he left in there survived for so longâŚÂ
âSo, would you say itâs time for you to reveal your secret plan, Zandik? Itâs been on my mind all day, you know.â You tapped the railing as you watched the clouds float in the sky, trying to find any shapes that looked familiar. Dottore watched from behind you, his eyes more focused on your pretty frame.
âI was waiting for you to finish this little adventure of yours. Youâve been so busy, how could I possibly interject?â Your husband moved to stand next to you, the black fluff of his outfit tickling your shoulder.
âAnd I thank you for your very much appreciated patience. I know youâd rather be tinkering with something than following me around,â you chuckled, relishing in the closeness of his body.
âNonsense. Even I value the time I have to admire your many expressions. It brings much amusement, especially the idiotic ones,â he hummed as he took his hand in yours, tugging you forward as you ignored the little tease.
âSo⌠where are we going exactly?â You squeezed his hand as you followed Dottore, simply trusting him. You had always loved Dottoreâs hands. They were big and fit perfectly in your own, reassuring you whenever he ran them over your body. It was the same hands that took so much from others⌠but always gave to you.
âYouâll see.â
âCan I at least have a hint? Or what weâre going to do there?â
âYouâll see,â he repeated while you huffed in disappointment, but then he paused, seemingly wanting to say something more. âIt is a place you showed me.â You raised your eyebrows but didnât pry anymore.Â
Soon the path dwindled, the noise from the city fading as two you got further and further away, and you instead decided to appreciate the atmosphere of the walk. However, your legs had gotten very tired from all the walking earlier, even though you took numerous breaks in the city, and you were struggling to keep up the pace now. But you were too shy to tell him about the problem.
It was a good thing your husband happened to be an observant doctor.
Dottoreâs pace lessened so you could catch your breath, and then he stopped completely to sweep you off your feet, something your body was far too grateful for. Your sigh of relief was also quite audible, much to your displeasure.
âThe path ahead is dangerous. It is better if you donât walk,â he said simply, sparing you the embarrassment. You whispered a quiet thank you as he carried your body bridal style with complete ease, your head nuzzled into his shoulder while your fingers played with his shirt and accessories. (You always wondered how he wore all those hanging things⌠when you tried putting all of them on before, your back hurt⌠really bad.)
He was right - the path was steep and rocky, hard for the average person to walk. There were some monsters, but he didnât even need to draw his blade to kill them of course. Even though you were more interested in cuddling into his chest, the journey seemed familiar⌠very familiar in fact, and you suddenly thought hard about where you could be going. It had to be some place during the Akademiya timeâŚÂ
You blinked again at the scenery and then you saw the past again.Â
Ah, how could you forget? The time you dragged the unwilling scholar from his dorm, all because you wanted to show him a special place (and get him out of that stuffy room for once, all he wanted to go to was to class, the dorm, or to some ruin for investigation.) You helped him through the whole hike, defeating the enemies easily as he panted behind you. You only ended up going there once with him due to all the hassle it took, but it was so worth it because the view was-
Absolutely breathtaking, you thought, as you set sight on the place after over four hundred years. To be exact, it was just a very large flower field filled with dainty Sumeru Roses, but it was just so pretty, along with a clear, unfiltered view of the pure sky. The smell was always so pleasant too, the perfect place to relax. The last time here, you forced him to lay back and just relax (which he was not a fan of, he bought his books anyway.)
Dottore had set you down carefully, making sure your feet werenât too wobbly, so you could take a few steps into the field.
âItâs just as beautiful as I remember,â you sighed happily. âI⌠I canât believe you actually remember this place,â you got a bit flushed at how he remembered this, especially when you loved it so. Your eyes roamed about, trying to take in every detail when you noticed there was something spread out a bit in the distance. You took a few more steps while Dottore followed closely behind, still silent. Soon, you were in front of a soft blanket, along with a picnic basket, the delicious aroma wafting out.
âThis isâŚâ The words didnât quite make it out of your mouth as you kept looking back and forth between the picnic and your husband. Meanwhile, Dottore didnât seem phased in the slightest as he ushered you to the ground. A few containers were emptied onto the blanket, packaged just the way you used to when you were a student. Did he copy you? Not to mentionâŚ
âThese are the same things I made for you for our last picnicâŚâ Obviously, he couldnât have cooked these himself or heâd have blown up someoneâs kitchen, but his memory was quite exceptional. You always specifically made these dishes because they were loved by both of you.
âEat before it gets cold. Though⌠the flavor lacks in comparison to what you make,â he seemed slightly disappointed by the quality as he bit into the samosa. Perhaps this was why he barely ate anything all day. You, on the other hand, were still⌠flabbergasted, your jaw moving to speak and then freezing up. You furrowed your eyebrows before you moved much closer, gripping his shirt and yanking on it.
ââŚWho are you, and what have you done with Dottore?â
ââŚPardon?â
âIâm asking who you are and what have you done with the real Dottore!â You exclaimed as you pulled him back and forth while he looked at you blankly, surprisingly more with confusion than amusement.
âAlright, how many times have you apologized to me in your numerous centuries of life?â
âThree times.â
âHow long did you kick me out of the dorm when-â
âFour days, thirteen hours, and fourty-seven minutes.â
âOkay⌠how many pens did you end up breaking on the expedition when we got trapped in that one ruin in the desert?â
âNine.â You blinked at him carefully before scooting back, satisfied with your little interrogation.
ââŚSo- so, youâre the real thing, huh? Hmph, I- well, it is about time you did something like this. I always had to organize all the picnic dates back then you know,â you brushed it off, trying to not show how touched you were by this, your heart stuttering badly. It was so simple, but all so meaningful. It showed that Dottore paid attention to you, only to someone as ordinary and weak as you, nothing escaping his watchful eye. Quickly, you tried to shake off the sudden emotion bubbling in your chest as you continued to defend yourself.
âYou canât blame me for this, by the way. Doing all this is awful strange for you,â you stated. The way he was acting was almost a bit perturbing. You never would have thought him to care so much.Â
âI only copied exactly what you did. Hardly any effort was required on my part,â he always said such things so casually, as if it was meaningless (which could be good or bad, depending on the situation.) But things like these always made your heart race, made you think that at least you were special to him. You decided not to continue the topic.
You plopped your head onto his lap, beginning to reach for something to munch on when he stopped you.
âDonât eat lying down. Itâs bad for your health.â
âAww, but you're so nice and cozy down here.â
The time flew by quickly after that, words swept away by the gentle breeze. After a bit of prodding you were able to get him to start rambling about that one experiment that was giving him a headache, an update that you were interested in but more so listening to his voice. You loved when he did this - not many people know how much of a talker he could be.Â
In the meantime, you also idled by weaving some flowers together. You had done this last time too - the blush on his cheeks gave you a good laugh. Though your hands trembled from how much precision the braiding of the stems took, you continued on slowly anyway.Â
âThere we go,â you let out a sigh of relief as the stems were finally connected into a crown, even though it definitely wasnât your best work. You glanced at Dottore, who was still ranting on (about the banker this time), and then placed it on him, which he momentarily paused at the sensation, fingers reaching up to brush against the flowers.
âHmm⌠itâs a bit lopsided, but it suits you, cutie,â you smiled at the work of art you created - your husband adorned with Sumeru Roses, to be exact. He rubbed his fingers between the soft petals before placing the crown on your head instead.
âIt suits your features far more.â Heat rose to your cheeks as you shook your head.
âSuch a smooth talker. I feel as though our places have been swapped,â you exhaled softly, remembering how you were the one always blatantly flirting with him in the Akademiya. âAh, wait, I still have one more request!â There was one thing you wanted to do for the whole day.
Your trusty Kamera was released again as you looked at him with pleading eyes, the device aimed toward him. Dottore let out a great sigh. As much as he enjoyed sharing new mechanical tools with you, you could get⌠really into them. Especially because he kept tweaking them to make them better for you. Though he supposed he shouldnât blame you too much⌠as long as it kept you satisfied.Â
âI believe youâve taken plenty.â
âWell, yes, I have⌠but none of you, beloved!â
Even though you had taken a lot of pictures, none of them included Dottore unfortunately. He wasnât very fond of the idea of you having such⌠soft photos of him in possession. He knew exactly the kind of person you were, and what you could do with them, more specifically⌠who you could show them to.Â
âCome onâŚâ You cozied up to him, nuzzling yourself against your lover. âMy scrapbook longs for more pictures of my one and only dear husband. Just one picture. One is all I ask! Iâll even take one of only your back profile if-â
âDo what you will, but make it quick,â he gave in begrudgingly, much to your pleasure. You gave him a good smooch on his cheek for that as you scooted back, getting into a better position to angle your Kamera.Â
âCould I get a smile? A pose? Your eyes?â
âDonât push your luck too much, [Name].â You grinned cheekily at his response.
The audible click of the Kamera sounded, and then the photo printed out. In a few moments, his face appeared on it, and you sighed in contentment. He was so handsome, and the background was perfect too.
âSatisfied?â He questioned, to which you nodded. âNow give it here.â You passed him the photo and he looked at it briefly, before motioning for the device in your hand. You were a bit confused as to why he wanted your Kamera but you gave it to him anyway.
âWhat? Are you confiscating it now?â You giggled. He fiddled with it, fingers gliding over the buttons as you watched curiously, and then all of a sudden it was pointed at you, the snapping sound catching you way off guard. He similarly copied your previous motions, looking rather pleased at your scattered self that he managed to capture.
âAh- hey! At least let me fix myself first!â You fruitlessly lunged at Dottore to try and take back that unflattering picture of yourself, but of course, he was much stronger and faster than you.
âThis one is for my personal use. I see no problem, you do the same thing, do you not?â He smiled smugly, as you gave up rather quickly, grumbling about how cruel he was.
â
So much time had ended up passing that nighttime was in full swing, the only thing illuminating the sky was the brilliant stars that shined above. Your birthday was drawing to a close. Dottore had already quietly whispered the words to you, as he always did.
You were happy. Happy to have spent this time away from that lab, away from seeing snow for miles and miles. It really did feel refreshing. And of course, you were happy to spend time with the one you valued above all. The feeling had left you feeling lighter than you had in a while, and you were busy snuggling up to Dottore while you gazed at the stars.
But then he spoke.
â[Name].â
âYes?âÂ
âHow have you been as of late?â
âHmm? Well, Iâm fine. You know, same old, same old.â You lazily shrugged your shoulders, though you were a bit caught off guard by the question. He seemed to ponder your answer, fingers drumming against you in a contemplating manner. He wondered if he should press you - you had been far more lively today than you were lately, and he was not sure if it would be wise to leave a sour taste in your mouth.
âAnd what about you? How have you been, Zandik? Still sitting at a desk for twenty-four hours straight?â
âPerhaps. Perhaps not. Usually, youâre more than aware of my habits, considering you always barge in to change it.â You opened your mouth to respond, but your throat had gone dry because you knew what he was suggesting. You hadnât really been visiting him or the segments lately.
âWhat? Do you miss me that easily?â You forced a smile onto your face, hoping to just play off the situation.
âAnd what if I said I do?â Whatever words you had prepared had disappeared and gotten stuck in your throat. He used to be so horrible with lovey-dovey words, and yet he managed to pull them out so casually sometimes. You breathed in.
âI⌠you seeâŚâ It was embarrassing really, how easy it was for him to break down the walls you hardened so desperately. Or maybe you were just weak. You had been dismissing any hint of pity from all the segments and him for so long, but it seemed like it was all catching up to you now. The light feeling you just had was beginning to quickly revert back to the heaviness that weighed on your heart.
âItâs nothing really,â you still try to deflect the question. You try to roll over too, just so he doesnât have to see your face contort with all your stupid feelings, but his grip is far too strong for you to ever break free.Â
âYour face is very easy to read, darling. Why do you not simply tell me what ails you?â You already saw this coming. You two have done this so many times, and each time you never fail to feel like a burden.
ââŚBecause itâs the same conversation every time, Zandik. I donât know how many times I can continue to tell you everything⌠my body, my health⌠itâs always the same thing.âÂ
You cannot help but think that surely he would prefer a more⌠active partner, one who could follow him around and be at his beck and call, assisting him with his intriguing research and experiments, one who could easily match his level, elevating his progress more and more. Not⌠you who struggled with tasks that should be as simple as breathing, and was more like a thorn in his side than anything else.Â
You could list so many traits and things about him that could effortlessly show how he far exceeded the average person, even the Gods, how could you ever hope to live up to him? To a person who he deserved? You recall every time you ended up sobbing your heart out to him about these foolish matters, and yet every time he would listen, further ruining his research and schedule and- and, everything.
âI see,â he responds, his grip on you growing tighter, noticing your unleveled breathing. It is silent for a few moments, and you know heâs thinking of what to say, to ease your worries. Itâs probably nothing you havenât heard already though, so before he could waste his time, you interrupt him.
âZandik. Itâs my birthday. Letâs not talk about such things,â your voice is quiet and on the verge of being uncontrollably shaky. You ignore the prick of tears at the corner of your eyes and opt for hugging your husband instead. You hope that he takes pity on you and decides to let it go.
Dottore strokes your head for a few moments before pulling you back and taking off his mask, your eyes trembling as you struggle to look at him.Â
âLook at me,â he says, as he thumbs your chin, preferring for you to listen instead of him forcing you like he usually does. You let out a soft sigh and eventually comply, only because you know that he always gets what he asks for when heâs like this. When you do look at him, his face doesnât have a hint of softness, instead, itâs serious and solemn as he stares at you resolutely.
The look he gives you says that heâll make sure youâre here for the next birthday, and the one after that, and all the ones decades and centuries from now, no matter what sins may stain his hands. You can only admire it for a few moments before you lean your head down. Even though he claimed not to be good at comfort and whatnot, he always made you happy⌠especially when it mattered.
âI love you, Zandik. So much. I donât know what Iâd do without youâŚâ your words come out quieter than you want them to, but you got the message out anyway. Zandik doesnât respond, but when he tilts your chin to kiss you, you know that he feels the same. You let him push you down on the blanket again, continuing to kiss you as he held your body firmly. You donât know how much time passes, but the world is even darker now.
âItâs getting late,â Dottore commented, rubbing circles on your palm. You only weakly squeeze back in response. âPerhaps we should get back now.â
âArenât we leaving for Snezhnaya first thing tomorrow morning?â Dottore nodded in response to your question. âThen let me treasure this moment for a bit longer. Who knows when weâll be able to do this again?â You looked away from him to the sky that was now dark, the stars glimmering above the two of you. Dottoreâs gaze remained on you until he too looked away to share the same view as you.
âVery well,â he gave into your request and a comfortable silence fell between the two of you, as you moved your hand to intertwine with his own more firmly. The two of you said nothing as you continued to share the moment with each other, until the very end.
Il Dottore wasnât a good man. Many people froze in fear at the mere mention of his name, their bodies cold at the thought of what he had done, and what he could do. He wasnât the best lover either. You two didnât always get along, there were obviously times he upset and frustrated you. Any normal person could probably think of a hundred reasons as to why you shouldnât stay with Dottore.
But you knew that whatever remained of Zandikâs heart loved you, and that was all that mattered.

FOUND FAMILY TROPE
â tags ; fem!reader, developing relationships, found family, reader is yanqing's mom, jing yuan being a bit emo, slight angst, fluff, happy endings!
â note: here's part 2, sorry it took a while sdjhfjh
part 1
jing yuan never liked the quiet, but he doesn't hate it as well.
sometimes, to him, it's peaceful. the gentle rays of sunlight slowly making its home in his abode, the gentle rustle of the wind, curtains fluttering from the gentle breeze, and the chirping of those tiny little finches that seemingly found comfort in his windows.
but sometimes, it's unsettling. his abode is far too huge for his liking. far too big that despite his huge stature... it makes him feel so small. the quiet seems to haunt him, its silence deafening. The halls are way too quiet, every nook and cranny - every room he barely used...
he was never used to the quiet, never ever got used to it. to jingyuan, the silence was a hard pill to swallow - one that haunted him, one that enables the lonely thoughts and regrets he has in his head. to him, it's a terrifying gamble. one that he doesn't risk, and a risk he doesn't want to take.
yet, he doesn't like the noise either. not when the screams and cries of his people fills the air, not when his friends mourn for their lost friend, not when the final verdict was placed, and not when their hatred and vengeance spoke louder that it drowned the voices of their joyful laughter.
not when chingzu scolds him for the nth time for setting his duties aside, not when fu xuan complains about his sleepiness, and not when another trouble arises in the luofu.
but then suddenly... the noise doesn't seem to be as unbearable as before. when he met you, as cheesy as it sounds.
"yanqing! don't run too fast!" you scolded as yanqing continued to run away from you, laughing and giggling as he played in the general's garden. you sighed in defeat and placed your hands on your waist.
the general chuckled, "it's fine y/n, let the little man play to his heart's content. I don't mind at all"
"you spoil him a bit too much, general. i'm afraid he'll get more and more demanding" you let out a small laugh.
the quiet was slowly filled with noise, ones that came from you and your son... ones that echoed through his oh so empty halls, ones that vibrated through his walls, ones that filled his abode with the color of your tone, ones that replaced the seemingly monochromatic energy of his own home... and ones that he always looked forward to hear in the mornings, afternoons, and nights.
the way you and yanqing would greet him with a sweet "good morning, general!" was something that brought warmth and comfort to his lonely heart. something that gives him peace as you began to serve breakfast on the table with yanqing helping you set up the table...
the way you would sing your lullabies to lull your son to sleep, the way you would hum as you cook in the kitchen, the way you would read yanqing bed time stories, and the way you keep him entertained with your company by telling random stories and tales about yourself...
these are the moments and memories he forever wants to keep - ones that he never intends to sacrifice. one that he will forever engrave and etch on his heart and mind, body and soul.
but then suddenly, the silence doesn't seem to be as unbearable as before. as he watches you and yanqing sleep.
the corner of his lips twitched upwards and turned into a warm smile as he observes the mother and son duo sleeping about in the garden without a single care in the world. your forms are relaxed, the children's book in your hand slipping out of your grasp, your arms wrapped around yanqing as he sleeps on your chest, and the soft snores you both let out wasn't something he was able to miss.
and suddenly, jing yuan hated to not hear the quiet.
"general, you've done enough for me and yanqing throughout my whole recovery. i'm truly grateful for your kindness and care, which is why I think it would be best not to further burden you anymore with our situation as I have recoveredâ you said with an almost disappointed and apologetic smile, and jing yuan froze in place.
âI already told you, I donât mind at all as long as you have fully recovered. that would be the only favor I ask of you in returnâ he said, trying to convince you while trying to mask his desperation
âyouâre too kind general, truly. I canât thank you enough for letting us stay just because of my sonâs insistence and tantrumsâŚâ
jing yuan could have left you both to the care of the healers of the alchemy commission after he had rescued you and yanqing⌠but the little manâs cries of fear and worry over his mother made it hard for him to leave. so he held him close, and chose to look after him until you wake up because yanqing who found comfort in the generalâs presence - doesnât want to part with him.
jing yuan could have agreed without any hesitation to your offer, he could have allowed for you to leave his home⌠but he got so used of your presence that it made it hard for him to agree. those moments where he feels himself truly relax in his abode, the fact that he have someone to come home to⌠for him to keep on bearing the burden and weight on his shoulders, for everything to be much more bearable than beforeâŚ
he couldnât bear coming home to an empty house anymore, where only silence and noise greets him in mockery.
and suddenly, jing yuan hated to silence the noise
as you filled the empty rooms and spaces in his abode, leaving your mark on every corner of his home⌠driving away the silence that haunts him as he hears your skittering and humming in the kitchen while making dinner, as you read your bedtime stories to your son, as you sing while taking your sweet time in the showerâŚ
for once, jing yuan felt fear.
for once, he lets himself be selfish.
ââŚI plan to take yanqing as my apprenticeâ your jaw drops.
âg-general? what are you- thatâs too much to ask of you!â you exclaimed.
âthe little man wants to become a cloud knight does he not? I donât see the problem with thatâ he said with his familiar smug and relaxed demeanor.
âbut yanqing has not made any feats worthy of him being your apprentice! general, I ask you to please reconsiderâ
âI disagree, I see great potential in him and I have no doubts he will reach great heights and perform great feats⌠I only wish to nurture his talent at a young ageâ he stepped towards you.
âthere are plenty of spare rooms for us to make use of⌠and I donât mind you using them. so fret not.â
maybe, this is his way of asking you both to stay. as you look in his eyes, he looks at you with such gentleness⌠desperation⌠and longing. for once, the general looked truly lonely, but he couldnât be anymore sincere of his feelings.
and maybe, just maybe⌠you might give in to his wishes too.
sksjdh finally complete, sorry it took so long đ I donât know if I did well in writing part 2 but this is the best that my brain could think of đĽš
should I do a part 3 as well??

Have you read/watched Nimona? If so, thoughts?
The kind of emotional gutpunch I can't bear to watch without ample preparation. The first ten minutes are the hard part for me - it's always a wrench for me to get through a "good-hearted character is cruelly framed" plotline, so I really appreciate how quickly they get that out of the way and how Nimona immediately brightens the mood when she shows up.
Overall, truly one of the best examples of how a creator can use their personal grief and rage at injustice as a medium to sculpt a story. The narrative manages to feel deeply authentic to a real emotional journey while still feeling completely contained within the story. I'm not entirely sure how to put this, but sometimes when a writer gets allegorical with their experiences, it can feel like the story gets put on pause so the characters can turn out to the audience and speak in the author's voice about their thoughts on the subject - a pretty clumsy way to communicate a message. Nimona does not do that. Instead, the many real-world parallels to bigotry, propaganda, queerphobia, church corruption, xenophobia, and regressive policies driven by terror of change feel like they arise naturally from the setting within the story rather than being imposed on it from the outside, which is extremely quality writing and characterization. Nimona's story is so clearly informed by ND Stevenson's life and gender journey, but Nimona herself feels like her own person who is messy and grieving and putting up walls and self-destructing and still - still - a fundamentally joyful, gleeful person who absolutely loves being alive when she isn't being brutally beaten down for the crime of existing inconveniently.
Also, it's a comparatively minor thing, but I really like how, like with She-Ra, Nimona creates a world that is passively non-homophobic, with gay relationships front and center and evidently regarded as completely fine and not worth commenting on - which, to me at least, made both stories remarkably relaxing and comfortable to immerse myself in, because I wasn't being randomly jumpscared by reminders of real-world hate - but it still uses allegory to address the real-world roots of homophobia in the form of xenophobia, correlated injustices like classism, and the monster-ification of The Other. So it can clearly state "hating people for how they exist is Always Fucked And Wrong" without having to dunk the queer audience in the icebath of "hey remember how people in the real world think you personally should be dead?" Again, not sure I'm phrasing this super clearly, but it's a balance ND Stevenson consistently strikes with his work, and I really love how he does it.
Animation's gorgeous, voicework is consistently top-shelf, love the aesthetic of Cyberpunk Arthuriana. Wins across the board.

ahhhhh, im.not the one who requested it buy I love the oneshot about catnap with the child he took care of after the hour of joy because of the kitty thing. Even though I'm not the one who requested it, is it possible I can request something in the same premise of it. Where catnap after taking care of the child for a long time is starting to run out of the food reserves the factory had, and he has to find other ways to feed them. Through feeding them like how he feeds the smiling critters in the playhouse on "meat" from you know who, or forcing the child to leave so they have a chance to find food. But catnap being catnap wants to keep her there despite so decides on the first choice, even though he had let the child get attached to dogday.
(I'm sorry this may show up on your ask box twice I ment to not send this anonymously but I did by accident so I wanted to correct that, anyways thank you for your absolutely amazing writing remember to take breaks when you need to and stay amazingâ¤ď¸)

Note || awe, no worries. Happy to see you in!
WC || 1,034
Sypnosis || emotions are scarce, food is too. It seems factory is getting to everyone, CatNap is left with unprecedented levels of risks.
The conditions of the environment were no doubt not very liveable ones, so he had tried his best to adapt to the conditions so that you may be able to live in his room comfortably or even walk anywhere else in Playcare. Even beyond the whole place in any case, he just wasnât sure what to do anymore. CatNap was at an odds end within himself at deciding what to do, what would be best for you.
Should he force you to leave the factory in hopes you find food? No, youâd just get lost and scared, no doubt manhandled by an incompetent people that may pass you by in the process. You were just a kid, lonely and in need of companionship and being surrounded by people you could truly trust.
Though the colorful disposition and creepy toys in this place far proved the idea he needed to keep you safer more often. Knowing that you may as well get attached to some of the other toys you come across, CatNap was admittedly worried.Â
You were often inquisitive, curious to find everything your attention was captured by. That wasnât of any good in his honest opinion, but he had to remain with a steady and cool head. So that when it may be, he can take care of you more properly.
CatNap didnât want you to leave, he had become far too accustomed to your presence. Hearing your joyful laughs and giggles, staying so hopeful and strong in your own unique way. You certainly brought on a joyful aspect to his lonely life, even with all the others he had punished for being heretics.Â
DogDay, oh yes, he had to take some chunks from him. That was the last thing he wanted to do with all that has been said and done. But he truly had no other option, but his worst thought being as how you began to get attached to DogDay.
In retrospect however, he will admit that you can be cute and quite charming for just being a child at most.Â
âMrâŚâ You began, the crayon stilling to a stop. DogDay perked his head up, though the effort to move is indeed extraneous on his war-torn body (both literally and figuratively). âHm, sweetheart?â He spoke out, his voice spooking you a little bit as he hadnât spoken very often. You didnât expect him to actually answer you or at all for that matter, but DogDay seemed kind to you. You wanted to get to know him at least, but to him, he was slight afraid â on your behalf, you didnât know better on a lot of things. Especially the vying point is how his legs had been taken from him, most of it being fed to the smaller toy versions of the smiling critters and you too. Did you even know what you were eating?
You hesitantly stood up, leaving your paper and crayon to abandon. âWhy are you chained up like that?â You asked with a tinge of nervousness, almost afraid as if you were going to incur some sort of angry emotion from the large dog. If he could truly move his own gaping black mouth, he wouldâve been frowning right now. DogDay was concerned for you, as to why you were put in this situation.Â
âI am⌠just not a very good person, sweetheart.â His gentle tone carried an aura reminiscent of a father if you ever heard one. Your eyes were wide with curiosity, knowing it was okay to continue speaking with him the way you were. âBut, you donât look bad to me. You're even nice to me!â Your innocent tone had brought back a fragmented memory for DogDay, he chuckled with a warm spell about the air.
DogDay let out an audible sigh, âNot all things are as they seem, CatNap included.â His words incited a bout of curiosity in the flames of your stomach. Now this was something you needed to understand, âStretchy kitty?â DogDay nodded, a chuckle escaping him once more. You simply were the cutest thing he had seen in a long while.Â
âI.. would say heâs not, kind or gentle as you would think him to be.â DogDay was nervous, irradiated by a different presence he had quickly taken notice of, but had continued on anyway. âCatNap, had uh, punished me Sweetheart. Wasnât nice to his god.âÂ
âGod?â you thought, âwhat is that Mr?â You spoke out in reply, sitting down and closer next to him then you were previously. You were rather oblivious to the presence of such an omniscient aura, menacing enough to be sure. DogDay wasnât sure how to explain the term finely, but you were curious, wanting to satiate that curiosity by always asking questions.Â
You deserved to have every single one of them answered, no matter how silly they may seem. DogDay had hoped the best for you, he had gotten rather attached to you. In spite of CatNapâs many warnings to not talk to you or even glance in your direction, not wanting him to bore your head with lies and spiteful attempts to turn you against him in any way possible. Well, DogDay had felt quite an intense hatred against CatNap right at this very moment, and found the courage to move on forward with his words. No matter what may happen to him, âGod is uh, letâs say a very inspirational person⌠powerful even. But he can be a hypocrite too.â He nodded, tilting his head as if he was speaking through his movements.
âSweetheart, you follow your own heart alright?â DogDay spoke hopefully, hoping to see that his words had gotten to you a little bit. âNever let anyone tell you otherwise.â You nodded with a fire in your eyes he hadnât expected from you, but this a youthful you, easily impressionable and inspired. DogDay will forever be hopeful for you, and grateful he ever had gotten to speak to you in the past few days anyway.
A distant crying was unheard of, a lonely digressable cat, heart heavy and hurt. He began to cry silently, tears are there yet there are none.
Iâll shelter and adore you more than anything.

Zayne (x kitten hybrid reader)
Itâs Zayneâs birthday so I thought I might as well write for him first in the Halloween Monster Mash >< hope you guys enjoy
Wc: 1,4k
Warnings: MDNI, established relationship, I used âkittenâ just for it to sound cute guys, reader is an adult hybrid, kitty in heat, thigh grinding, fingering, piv, in his office
Big thanks to @nanamiscocksleeve for hosting Monster Mash
The weather was exceptionally breezy and cool today, a perfect day to hang out and have some fresh air, you packed your things and brought Zayneâs birthday cake to surprise him. The sky was filled with clouds, bright like the base cream of the birthday cake you bake just for him. It took you a few days to consider the ingredients and decoration that fit his style before finally started baking it yesterday. Use mint royal icing snowflakes and little candied sugar flowers for decoration, with two small seal-shaped mochis on top. Thinking of how delighted heâll be seeing your homemade cake makes your belly churn from excitement.Â
Regardless of the good weather, your skin has been prickling all morning. Youâve already felt unwell last night, barely had your sleep and were restless all the time. Kitten hybridâs normal temperature was already a few degrees higher than normal people's, but yesterday you were burning hot, making you want to trim your smooth fur. To make it worse, the heat was pooling down your lower abdomen, making you uncommonly wet. Youâve never experienced this feeling of annoyance, aching and arousing before, and it makes you consider staying home for a brief second. But today is Zayne's special day, and you donât want to leave him to celebrate it alone, especially when he holds such a significant place in your life now. He doesnât usually have his day off, so you have to grab this chance and give him the best birthday heâs ever had. He still wanted to finish some important files and paperwork in his office as a workaholic that he is, so he texted you to meet him at the hospital this morning before hanging out together.Â
âMaybe I should ask Zayne to check if thereâs anything abnormal with my healthâ, you thought, heading to Akso Hospital.Â
âOh? Youâre here again? I didnât expect to see you so soon. Did you get injured again?â
Dr. Greyson bumps into you first when you enter Akso hospital, he is as joyful as every day if you can ignore the prominent dark circles under his eyes. Itâs not uncommon for the clinic staff to look exhausted all the time, considering how busy Akso Hospital can be since itâs one of the best medical facilities in Linkon.Â
âThankfully Iâm not, Iâm having my day off and itâs Zayneâs birthday, so weâll spend the day together. Is he busy right now?â
He took a glance at the box in your hand and smiled brightly: âNot at all, you can find him in his office. Iâm sure heâll love your gift. I have a meeting now, see you next time!â
You wave him goodbye and quickly get to Zayneâs office. The more you think about him, the aching in your lower belly keeps rising and heat rushes to your cheeks.Â
âZayne?âÂ
His eyes look up from the pile of work on his desk to catch your eyes, the adoration in his eyes melts you. You place the cake on his office desk, then take your seat between his legs with your back resting against his chest.Â
âDid you bake it yourself?â he chuckles at the mochi seals.Â
When you confirm, he kisses the top of your head, murmuring into your kitty ears: âI like it a lot. Thank you for keeping your promise to be by my side for my birthdayâ. You place a kiss on his cheek before hovering over his lips, âOf course I will, you deserve every best thing in the world, darlingâ. His lips touch yours most delicately, as though he canât believe youâre truly here with him, in his office as his lover, not just a not-so-regular patient of his anymore. He could never dare to dream about getting with you, and he tried to cover his feelings and keep his distance for way too long, but somehow, you always find your way back into his heart. The kiss soon becomes more intense, leaving you gasping for air and tugging at his arm to let go.Â
Nuzzling your head on his shoulder, you breathe in his scent. Somehow it makes your head dizzy, unable to form any thoughts. You never find it so comfortable yet addictive to it this much, your lower tummy aches and itchy, and wet pooling down your panty. Gosh, maybe it was a stupid idea to wear a skirt today. You couldnât help but grind down a bit to ease the sensation.
No no no, you shouldnât, you need to fight the urge to grind on his thigh, to mark him yours with your scent, to let him push deep into your cunt and mark his territory, to knot you and make chubby cubsâŚWHAT WAS THAT? Where did those thoughts come from? Your head tried to take back its control but those horny thoughts sounded so tempting now. Then the realization hits you. You thought it was just a normal ovulation day with some extra spice, but thisâŚYou grab his arm, your voice sounds like a whine, âZayne, I think Iâm having my first heatâ
âCan you wait until we get to my house?âÂ
He asks, mind recalling his course of dealing with a hybridâs heat. You whisper a no, as he thought, kitten hybrid wonât be able to resist for long in the presence of the suitable mate. âPlease touch me, Zayne. I need something to fill me up. It feels so emptyâÂ
You cry out in frustration, rubbing your needy cunt on his thigh and making a noticeable wet spot on his pants. He caresses the soft fur on your tummy before the other hand reaches down further, petting your sweet cunt through the cotton panty. He presses down on your sensitive clit, circling it with his thumb while kissing and nibbling your neck. You can only grunt out in between moans and gasps: âPleasee, stop teasing me. I need your cock nowâÂ
Zayne hums at that, he gets you up from his lap, places you on his table then pulls down your underwear. Exposing to the cold air and his hungry eyes, it clenches down, oozing out the sweet nectar that he always craves. But he knows how painful itâll be for you if he doesnât hurry up and fill you with his cum, he cannot be selfish and taste you for hours like other times you sleep together. His skilled fingers carefully opened you up. By the time he puts his third finger in, your wall impatiently sucking him in, the sloppy sound filled the room making you all flustered from embarrassment. Your brain turns to mush at his touch, canât find in you the need to lock the door anymore, you donât want to leave his table anytime soon.Â
Itâs not enough, you need his cock to rearrange your inside right now, pump his seed in your fertile womb and make beautiful babies together. Your hands clumsily unbuckle his belt and undo his zipper. He clicks his tongue: âNaughty kitty. Are you that impatient?â
His cock has already hard when you pulled it out, leaking precum onto the floor. âIâm ready now, donât need more prep babe. Pleaseee put it inâ you plead with your teary eyes, knowing thatâs his weakness. He grunts out and bites down on your neck while pushing in, your wall is milking him up with how tight you are. The curve of his cock hits your sweet spot, making your eyes roll back and your tail grabs tightly around his thigh. Being in heat makes your body notably more sensitive, when he reaches down to rub your clit, you instantly cum. You almost lose your consciousness after the 5th orgasm, but you need something more. Just a little bit more. You pull him closer to kiss his neck, fingers massaging his nipple, you understand his body enough to know how to trigger his orgasm the fastest. His cock twitches inside you, squirting ropes of precious seeds while he tries his best to keep his voice down.Â
When you all come down from the high, your body can finally relax now that you have your fill, you endearingly stroke his cheek, âThank you for helping me with this honey. Iâm sorry for taking up all our morning dealing with my problemâÂ
He holds you tightly in his arms, planting kisses all over your face and whispering to your ears:
âNonsense. That was the best birthday present Iâve ever hadâ

Failure
Summary: Reader gets a low grade on a test and is convinced her dad will hate her for it
Warnings: Self-depreciating thoughts and feelings, swearing, sobbing
Word Count: Absolutely no idea.
Spencer would never intentionally want to make his daughter feel like she had to be as smart as him.
He loved her regardless of her intelligence level, or grades, or what college she got into in the future.
He thought she knew that.
And she did, to some degree.
But when Y/N saw that she got a C- on her history paper the first thing she thought was "Dad's gonna be so angry."
Spencer had never been truly angry at Y/N before.
Disappointed and annoyed sometimes maybe.
But never in Y/N's life had Spencer been genuinely angry at her.
Deep down, Y/N knew she was overreacting, but she couldn't help it.
Her whole life people compared her to her dad, usually as a joke.
Derek would often joke that Spencer should watch out since Y/N might outsmart him one day.
He never meant it to be pressuring to the girl.
But she couldn't help it.
"He's going to be so angry at you."
"You ruined everything, he'll probably never even want to look at you again."
"You fucked up."
The rest of the day went by in a blur.
All that Y/N could think of was how she was going to tell her genius of a father that his daughter was too stupid to get a good grade on a test.
Her hands were shaky and her stomach felt awful.
The anxiety wouldn't leave.
It followed her through the school hallway.
It followed her home.
She thought maybe her dad wouldn't be home yet, maybe his most recent case took longer than he anticipated.
But no.
Usually, she'd be joyful to find out her dad was home.
This time when she stepped into their apartment and saw Spencer sitting on the couch with a book in his hands, she felt tears start to form in her eyes.
Spencer looked up at the sound of Y/N coming home.
"Hi, sweetheart!" He said happily, excited to see her after several days of being away for work.
Y/N sniffled and slowly walked towards her father, test paper in hand.
She stood in front of her dad for a second, not looking up or making any indication of being about to sit next to him and cuddle into his side like usual.
Spencer saw her lowered gaze and shaky hands.
"Sweetheart? Are you okay?"
With a shaky hand, Y/N handed her test to her dad.
Spencer took it, confusion written on his face.
He saw a little mark on the side that looked like it was caused by a tear and got worried.
"Y/N, sweetheart, I'm confused what's wrong?"
"I failed," Y/N said with a hoarse voice.
"What? Sweetheart, a C isn't failing," Spencer said softly.
Sobs wracked Y/N's body and Spencer quickly stood up to hug her.
"I'm so sorry. Please don't be mad at me, I don't know what I did wrong but I'll do better next time, I swear, please don't be mad at me." She sobbed.
Spencer hugged her tightly and quietly shushed her as she continued sobbing.
"It's okay, Y/N, I'm not mad."
"I'm so sorry."
"It's okay." He repeated.
He backed away from her slightly so he could wipe some of the tears from her face.
He hadn't seen her sob so much in years.
"N/n, I am not angry, it's okay."
He was confused.
He had always tried his best to make sure Y/N felt supported and loved.
He never wanted her to feel like he'd be angry at her for something like this.
Or anything, really.
"Y/N, why would you think that I'd be so angry over this?"
"Because," She sobbed. "I shouldn't fail."
"Sweetheart, everyone fails. You don't think I've ever failed at something?"
"I shouldn't." Y/N insisted.
"Why not? You're a human being, Y/N, it's okay to make mistakes."
"I owe it to you not to fail. And I did."
Spencer gently wiped tears from Y/N's face and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"You do not owe me anything. You never have."
More tears flowed down Y/N's face.
"I'm not mad at you, sweetheart. I will never, ever be mad at you for something like this. I'm so sorry I didn't make that clear enough, that's my fault."
His words didn't seem to be enough to convince of her that.
He hugged her tightly and let her cry.
Spencer breathed a little slower and more obviously in an attempt to help regulate Y/N's uneven breathing.
After a few minutes, Spencer carefully made it so they were sitting down, not letting go of his child.
Y/N continued to cry.
By now it wasn't so much because of her test, more so because the anxiety was finally leaving her and it painfully left through sobs.
Spencer carefully traced circles on Y/N's back and continued to hold her.
Y/N's sobs died down after a while.
She wrapped her arms around her dad's waist and buried her face in his shoulder.
The feeling of the material of his shirt helping to ground her a little.
The smell of the laundry detergent he'd used her whole life being a soothing scent.
"I love you," He reminded her. "I love you so much and nothing will ever change that."

Hello! How was your day? I hope it's been good.
Could I request Zhongli, Neuvillette, and Wriothesley finding out their lover had been gushing over them to random people?
Zhongli, Neuvillette, and Wriothesley x gushing!reader
Zhongli
The ex-archon as usual goes for his daily work break for lunch and tea where Iron Tongue Tian told stories, sitting down and looking around to see one of the staff talking excitedly with another couple of patrons before seeing him. They seemed to light up upon seeing him and bid goodbye to the others, coming over to him and clapping their hands together. âSo youâre the handsome man that Nameâs been gushing about. Zhongli isnât it? Iâve seen you around here often.â they said with a smile and noted down his order, waving their hands and assuring him they knew it was usual.
This was news to him. He hadnât suspected that thereâd be any reason for them to gush about him since to him it seemed it should be the opposite. âHm, I have to say this is the first time I have heard this. â he said and thoughtfully hummed. Color him intrigued. âWhy donât you sit here with me and have some tea as well? I would very much like to discuss more about what Name says about me,â he said with a smile and if someone looked close enough they could see the slyness behind it.
The worker immediately smiled and nodded, rushing off to get his tea and what he assumed was theirs as well. âWell, I can assure you theyâve never said anything but good things. If anything Iâm not sure I have heard anything but praises and compliments about how great of a lover you are. They always talk about how kind and caring you are whenever theyâre uncomfortable or feeling down. Another thing they really gush about besides how in their words youâre âsculpted like an archon attractive figureâ is how you actually listen to them and hear what they have to say.â he was unfortunately surprised when they emphasized that he actually listened to them which mustâve meant that others didnât in the past.
Zhongli was aware that some men werenât the best but he didnât think it was that bad and if Name hadnât mentioned it then he wasnât one to bring it up since he trusted them to come to him with any issues. It was comedically ironic that his lover had said he was handsome like he was made by the gods but he suspected that it was a cover partially for keeping his ex-divine status. Nevertheless, this was great information that heâd found out and he would let you bring it up if you chose to or more likely if they brought it up to you.
Neuvillette
Everyone knows that the melusines see Neuvillette as a sort of father and so when you both started dating or âcourtingâ as your boyfriend put it the adorable group of beings started thinking of you as their mom of sorts. Since they were guards and workers scattered around the city of Fontaine, greeting you whenever theyâd see you and having small chats. Many of which youâd gush and rave about all the great things about your boyfriend and how he was so sweet and caring.
Word travels fast but it travels faster among the melusines so when Neuvillette walked the Palais Mermonia to overview a big court case coming up he was welcomed by a joyful group of melusines who started talking all at once. He could roughly understand parts of what they were saying and how they were talking about his partner. âSlow down, slow down. Letâs go to my office first,â he said and ushered them all in, closing the doors and thankful they could talk about this in private. âNow, what is it that you want to tell me?â he asked and sighed tiredly. It was already 10 in the morning and already there was something urgently needing his attention.
Canotila came up to him with her hands clasped together and a wide happy smile on her face. âWe are just so happy to hear that Name loves you so much! We knew you were such a kind and devoted person to both Fontaine and its people but we didnât know how caring you really were. Itâs truly admirable Monsieur Neuvillette!â she gushed and joined several others to say affirmations of what Canotila had said. The Iudex knew his lover loved every part of him even the parts he was reluctant to share with them but he hadnât known they had been gushing about how great of a boyfriend he was.
To be completely honest seeing Neuvillette display any strong emotional expression was rare and the bright red blush spreading over his cheeks was a treat to see. He was extremely touched that you praised him to others for what you adored about him. He would talk to you later to possibly not tell others and strangers about the more intimate details of your relationship because of a few reasons.
Wriothesley
To some of the veteran residents, it wasnât a surprise to hear that the Duke Wriothesley had a lover and there were very rare times when heâd freely be able to visit you as often as heâd like but youâd often come to the prison when you both wanted to spend time together and couldnât wait. So the guards knew you well as well as the senior residents and greeted you in addition to also making sure no one else fucked with you if they saw you since you never treated them anything but kindness.
So it wasnât surprising when one of the guards informed him that one of the prisoners he was particularly close to asked to speak to him and came in with a smile. âIâm letting ya know that your lover is here but I think you wanna hear when I overhead them telling one of the guards,â he said and waited for Wriothesley to let him continue if he wished which he did. âWell, seems like youâre quite the 5-star boyfriend which doesnât surprise me since Iâve known you since you were once in here but Name wasnât it?â he clarified and continued.
âThey kept going on and on about how well you remember all of their favorite things even the littlest details like how they like their tea or favorite dessert. I feel like itâs not a surprise to hear that another major part of what I heard was about them going on and on about how doting and loyal you are not to mention how attractive you and your personality are.â he hummed with an amused smile and held his hands up, getting up and saying his goodbyes to the Duke.

crossed wires
k. kenma âđâËâšđ
fluff | misunderstandings (nothing serious) | reader has a rbf | mutual pining | cursing | fem. reader
this is a cute idea i had; i thought kenma would be a good fit for this ;p
"kenma, how do you not see what everyone else does?"
kuroo's teasing voice rung through Kenya's mind. it was like an alarm going off on an early school day. please, just be quiet. kenma stared at the giant 'GAME OVER' on his console; his irritation with his best friend seemingly growing.
"clearly, you're not seeing correctly. you sure your hair isn't cutting off any brain cells?" kenma mumbled as he pettily shut off his console. his eyebrow twitching when he heard the familiar snicker from the tall captain next to him.
"dude.. that's like.. not possible."
kenma did not have the energy to respond.
the two friends continued on their walk home after a long practice. kuroo, the whole walk there, had been nonstop bickering about the 'not so obvious but totally obvious' admirer he had: (name). admirer was not the term he would use. if anything, it was more like a butcherer stranded on a meat farm with nothing but a meat saw and an empty stomach. maybe even like one of the villains from his game; the ones with a deep rooted trauma causing an untamable hatred for the player. well, in kenma's case he was the poor player and you were the villain.
it all started in the beginning of the new school year. new faces in a new classroom. usually, kenma never really paid attention to his classmates. sure, he gave them a typical rundown and would decide to judge them based on first impressions for the rest of their lives. then boom, he would eventually forget their names come the second week of school. they didn't talk to him, he didn't talk to them.
that was hard to do when you, a classmate who sat diagonally behind him, would constantly feel stares at the back of his head. one time, he seen the reflection of your murderous gaze in his gaming console and he damn near flinched.
did he accidentally do something to you in the past? he tried to put a name to the girl with (eye color) eyes and (lip color) lips, but nothing was ringing a bell in his head.
because of this, he started to pay more attention to you.
when lunch would roll around, you would become joyful with friends, a rather pretty smile on your face. this was when he heard one of them say your name in a fit of laughter. (name). he repeated a few times in his head. kenma thought it was a nice change of scenery; his heart even skipped a little. and then when you felt eyes on you, turning and making eye contact with the quiet boy in your class, your face dropped.
it looked like a mix of both fear and absolute horror before morphing into a stone faced, angry expression.
yeah, you definitely hated him.
at first, he kept these interactions a secret from kuroo; truly not wanting to become a victim to the already relentless teasing.
until the one day you so happened to take the same train as them. today just had to be different.
kenma was set on ignoring you. he was locked into his video game: a PVP fighting game with unlockable characters and an online ranking system. kuroo usually would have ignored kenma's gaming; it was second nature to him after all. but of course, today was different.
"care to tell me why you're playing an online game with no internet?" kuroo pointed out as he stared at the constant loading circle making zero progress on kenma's screen.
kenma snapped out of whatever trance he was in and looked up at his friend with wide eyes. "...no." kuroo hummed in response, taking a quick look around the train. that is when he seen a sight that he never thought he'd witness. a girl staring at kenma with practical hearts in her eyes.
"kenma.. that girl is totally checking you out."
kenma's face contorted into one of disgust and confusion as he looked in the direction kuroo was only to make eye contact with you.
"kuroo, if that's how girls look at you i think you're never going to get married." kenma quickly shook his head and avoided looking back at you with everything in his body. "what? i know what i'm talking about. listen to me, i'm older and wiser." kuroo smirked arrogantly.
"she is the definition of if looks could kill."
"so you think she's pretty?"
kenma paused, his brain not really processing kuroo's words.
"that's not what i..."
pretty?
he hesitantly glanced at you again. with a closer look, he noticed how you fiddled with your hair when you looked at him. the way brows were furrowed, and the way your leg bounced.
it kinda looked like.. you were nervous?
"...meant?"
by the time he realized how long he was looking at you, his stop was already here, leading to his current predicament of kuroo's constant teasing and shitty advice.
"he.. HE DEFINITELY LIKES ME!"
you screamed into your pillow with a heated face. after rolling around for a few minutes to calm yourself down, you laid on your bed facing your ceiling.
you first noticed kenma during a rather boring lesson. the teacher's voice was draining all your energy, and it was getting harder to keep your eyes open. your eyes found focus on the boy in front of you, who had bleached hair and questionable posture.
he was playing a video game hidden in a book on his desk. you glanced up at the teacher one more time, making sure he was distracted. you watched as the boy played effortlessly through levels of a game you didn't know the name of.
before you knew it.. the school day ended.
it became a ritual for you, staring at his game after lazily taking notes. it came to the point where it felt like you were playing the game yourself. every time he would die and have to restart, you felt the anger and frustration for him.
a character would die? you'd silently weep for the fallen character since it seemed like he didn't give a fuck. and if he did, he wasn't one to show it casually on his face.
the most he ever showed (that you noticed, anyway) were subtle stretches of his legs, a twitch in his finger, and a knuckle pop.
or when he won after a tedious battle a sigh of relief, his shoulders dropping.
so maybe your facial expressions were a bit.. emotional compared to his and definitely not as subtle.
it didn't help that whenever the boy, who's name you learned was kenma, would look at you, your body immediately froze and you tried to get your face as normal looking as possible; not realizing what might've seemed normal to you was terrifying to kenma.
he wouldn't hold eye contact for so long before going back to whatever he was doing, much to your pleasure.
the train ride today was a change in your relationship with kenma.
why didn't he look away like normal?
it was a change yes, but not a bad one.
with delusional friends encouraging the idea, you've come to the conclusion that kenma kozume has a crush on you.
sure, maybe you were exaggerating. but any high school girl would, it's part of growing up! you justified this in your head.
and maybe you weren't too far off from the truth. his sneak glances during the school day allowed him to see the happy expression on your face when he reached an ending of the game. the look of anticipation when he was going through his game library; trying to find a new game to play after beating the last.
one he liked most, though, was the look of shock when he angled his console perfectly out of view from the teacher, but in a position for you to see more clearly.
pls reblog and like if u enjoyed it!

the wretched and joyful : ellie williams
life in jackson has been life with ellie williams, your best friend that you've spent nearly every day with. it was easy to ignore the butterflies or shaking hands, until ellie starts to pull away and you're left with untangling the feelings all on your own.
| a/n - excited to finally share the intro for my new multi part fic! i have so much planned for this. had to have an intro showing cute friendship stuff before it all gets destroyed. if you enjoyed reading this, please consider commenting/reblogging! <3 | c/w - general themes : ellie williams x female reader. mentions of violence, jealousy, best friends (to enemies) to lovers, angst, mutual pining, slow burn. this fic is purely for fun. with that being said, every single detail will not be canon compliant. if that may bother you, this might not be the fic for you! thank u!
you had almost died before you had made it to jackson.
you didn't really know why you weren't dead. you weren't really sure why the man with the gun took pity on you that day. maybe it really was your weakness that had saved you.
weakness, or plain stupidity. it didn't matter anyway.
when you were surrounded by a group of people on horses, you were fighting for sensibility. the lower halves of their faces had been covered with scarves acting as masks, and you didn't know if they were the bandits that assumably slaughtered your previous group or members of a rumored safe haven.
you had been scared and exhausted, fighting for your life even though you weren't even sure if that was what you wanted anymore. you yelled and spat out threats to spite the tears in your eyes, anything to defend yourself before your lungs would surely give out. driven purely by nerves, you continued waving your weapon around even when the man leading the group ordered you to drop it.
it was practically a death sentence. it should've been a death sentence, but it wasn't.
their promises of safety fell on deaf ears until you actually saw the place. even then, it was months until you got a decent night of sleep.
the man who was the first to point his gun at you, tommy, was also the first to lower it. you don't know what made him save you that day, but when you arrived at jackson he almost seemed amused.
in passing, he spoke to another man that you later learned to be joel.
"get ready for a case of deja fucking vu," tommy had muttered.
you didn't know what it meant, and you didn't know how to decipher the look that plastered itself onto joel's face.
you were the last surviving member of your group before jackson, or at least that's what you had to assume. nobody really believed that you had made it that far on your own, especially considering the state that you were in. you knew that they were weary about another group coming and looking for you, despite your honest confessions.
before jackson, before you were alone, you had been taken in by a group. the QZ was threatening to fall any day, and they had heard whispers. talk of safe communities throughout the states. with the information they had compiled across time, one of the rumors was bound to be true. you weren't admittedly close with any of the adults but on the night of chaos, they convinced you to join them.
you wanted to believe that they cared for you, but the truth lingered in the back of your mind. you knew that they knew that you wouldn't make it out. you wanted to believe that they were truly good, but when you shared your story with tommy, maria, and joel, you noticed the glances. the looks they shared. you didn't understand it until you were older, and even then it took awhile to come to terms with the truth.
your group wasn't saving you. they weren't looking out for you. they were using you. you were bait.
on the day that you had lost them, they told you to stay put in the woods. they told you that you would be safe there, because they weren't sure about what was up ahead. if the coast was clear, they would come back for you.
it wasn't true.
they had thought that they were heading into safety, and leaving you behind was a distraction to the bandits that had been hot on your trail. they had been wrong. they walked straight into trouble, and you went undetected.
and they had thought that you didn't stand a chance.
well, they were wrong. now all of them were dead and you were still here.
if only they stayed put, maybe they would've been saved too.
you were just about sixteen on the day that jackson opened itself up to you.
now, a few years later, you were proud to call jackson your home.
you had your own home, a house (though you swore that if the day ever came and jackson's population grew dramatically, you would be the first to offer it up. it was a compromise for allowing you to live on your own) to call your own, and friends. a community.
there weren't many people your age compared to the QZ, considering, but still somehow more than you had expected.
your first friend was dina, sent to check in on you days after you had first arrived in jackson. maria was concerned that you wouldn't be a good fit after you had stayed inside, hesitant to show your face. dina had knocked on your door, introduced herself, and by the very next day you had been out and about.
then came jesse. and then ellie. and then cat. and then there was less of cat, until your little group had solidified into yourself, dina, jesse, and ellie. you would thank your lucky stars every single day that you had people to relate to, people that you could talk to and really trust.
dina and jesse were great. so was ellie, just... differently. not in a bad way though. never in a bad way. joel had originally warned you that she could be a little rough around the edges, but you didn't get that. you talked about a lot of things pretty quickly. you never really knew what it was like to have a best friend, but you were pretty sure that ellie was it.
you were practically attached at the hip, once upon a time. though it became lesser and lesser as time went on, you still had a certain fondness for ellie in your heart that no one else seemed to match.
it's not that you stopped being friends, because you still hung out just about every single day. she just seemed a little different. less comfortable maybe, and a little more jaded. not that you blamed her. it was just difficult trying to decipher how she would feel each day. sometimes, ellie made you feel as though you were the most important person in the world. other times, she always seemed to keep you at an arm's length. more so lately than ever before. maybe she was getting a little sick of you, or maybe she was just drained from patrol. whatever it was, your feelings never seemed to waver.
"you're late," you observed, squinting over at the figure approaching you.
"hardly. patrol took longer than we thought. don't get picky," the figure warned, reaching a hand out to you.
you ignored the gesture, pulling yourself up from the curb in which you were sat.
"a plan is a plan, williams."
the tone of your scolding was half-hearted and the crease on ellie's forehead eased.
"any chance at a rain check?" ellie asked.
the softness of her tone made you do a double take, scanning her features for any sign of unhappiness. ellie looked fine though, just tired.
"i promised addie that i'd bring you. she's been wanting to talk to you, you know."
"i don't know what for," ellie muttered begrudgingly, but you knew that it was only because she was feeling shy.
adeline hollis was an older woman residing in jackson. you had grown close throughout your time spent there, pretty much depicting her as a familial figure in your life. besides dina, she was one of the first people to actually talk you.
mrs. hollis was quick-witted, kind-hearted, and exceptionally good with a needle. she fixed up clothes for you often, and managed to turn any stray fabrics into articles of clothing that you actually felt proud of. you felt safe around her, allowed to be vain and wish for pretty things despite the state of everything else.
you shrugged and took a few steps, allowing ellie to decide whether or not she was going to follow after you.
"doesn't matter," you brushed off. "besides, she was fixin' up joel's boots, you can play delivery girl."
"you're annoying today," ellie complained, and you knew that she was following you because the sound of her voice was pretty close.
"i'm in a good mood," you replied, frowning as the words left your lips. were you?
you could never give yourself much time to think about it. it wasn't worth a second thought anyway, not now.
"right," ellie snorted, finally appearing at your side.
the sun was so bright that it felt warm, the feeling of late spring tangible wherever you went.
you glanced at ellie briefly, not trusting yourself to look more than once. her cheeks were turning pink from the sun and she looked sleepy. it made your heart swell.
you didn't knock once you had made it to the familiar front door - you knew that you didn't need to.
"addie!" you called into the home, leaving ellie to follow in after you. "we're here!"
you were quickly greeted with a hug, made to feel like each visit was a special occasion despite how frequent they were.
"there you are!" adeline beamed, catching ellie extremely off guard by greeting her with a hug as well. "i'm so glad you girls are here."
"hi mrs. hollis," ellie mumbled, a bashful smile adorning her lips. ellie's cheeks were red from the interaction and you cleared your throat to stifle a giggle.
"do you have it?" you inquired, prompting ellie's confusion from the way in which your eyebrows danced with the question.
"you'll love it," adeline assured, swiftly exiting the room and leaving you to bounce on your feet.
ellie managed to scoot her way closer to your side, leaning into you as she spoke. "what are you-"
"don't you love it?" adeline expressed confidently, holding up a long, flowing piece of fabric.
except, it wasn't just a piece of fabric anymore. adeline had worked it into a skirt for you, and your eyes widened in adoration.
"addie!" you squealed, rushing forward and hugging the material against your chest. ellie's presence was momentarily forgotten, nearly, until you spun around and held up the skirt to her.
"don't you love it?" you gushed, and ellie looked robotic in the way that she bobbed her head.
you examined the fabric closer. the faded, dainty floral pattern covering the skirt was more than you could've hoped for.
"i love it," you breathed, looking to adeline with wet eyes. if ellie didn't feel so uncomfortable, she probably would've snickered at you. "truly, thank you so much. this is beautiful," you admired.
"please," adeline waved a hand. "it keeps me busy. and you," she faced ellie, singling her out. "i don't know what that man does all day to put those godforsaken shoes in such a horrible shape."
ellie looked dumbfounded, and this time you didn't shy away from releasing your giggles.
"joel's boots are by the door," adeline sighed.
"right. thank you," ellie responded, moving to collect them as quickly as she could.
you bid farewell to adeline, expressing your gratitude about five more times until she all but pushed you out of the door. lovingly, of course.
ellie begrudgingly carried the boots as you twirled and skipped and admired your new article of clothing.
"we gotta go out now, do something special," you joked.
"yeah? what's the occasion?"
a quick glare shaped ellie up quickly.
"don't you think it's pretty?" you asked, desperate for a compliment despite the fact that you weren't even wearing it yet.
"i do," ellie agreed, quick to please you. "it's perfect for you."
"it is, isn't it?" maybe you really were in a good mood today. a real one. "what about dina and jesse?"
"what about them?" ellie mused, watching as you held the skirt carefully in your hands, not allowing it to drape on the ground.
"off?" you questioned thoughtfully, wrinkling your nose in ellie's direction.
ellie shook her head.
"really?"
"really. dina and jesse are back on. as of... yesterday?" ellie contemplated.
"wow, news travels slow i guess," you joked, causing ellie to nudge your arm.
"don't worry, they'll be broken up again before we know it. it's no use even keeping track anymore."
"ellie! that's mean," you laughed, shaking your head.
ellie felt a little guilty for teasing behind their backs but really, it was getting ridiculous. besides, the sound of your laughter eased the guilt pretty damn quick.
"come back with me," ellie changed the subject.
you faltered, nearly tripping over your own foot. "what?"
"to mine," ellie clarified. "give joel his-" she swung the boots at you, acting as if she was going to throw them. "-disgusting old new shoes."
your heart skipped a beat from the invitation and you had already known that you were going to say yes. ellie could have invited you to help her clean out shimmer's stall and you would've said yes without hesitation. speaking from experience, just once or twice...
"sure," you grinned.
if you went with ellie, you would probably spend hours listening to her as she went through her comic collection again. and then you would probably end up falling asleep. and then you would probably stay the night. you would share the bed, normal, and get a sick feeling in your stomach whenever her leg accidentally grazed your own, not normal.
determined to cling onto the feeling of a good day, you swallowed down the not normal feelings, as you usually did.
ellie looked at you and smiled, like genuinely grinned, and your fingertips went numb.
"last one there cleans shimmer after patrol," ellie taunted, the reason behind her smile no longer feeling pure.
"what?" you laughed in disbelief, just before ellie took off.
"ellie!" you shouted, fumbling to quickly catch up to her. "ellie williams! i don't even do patrol!"
*:シďžâ§*:シďžâ§
"-this one's my favorite though. i mean, look at the cover. isn't it sick?"
ellie shoved the worn comic book in your direction, causing you to blink and raise your head to get a better look.
"it is really cool," you murmured. you knew it was her favorite issue, and you already knew what the cover looked like. still, you loved to hear her talk.
ellie sat up, peering at you. you were laying on your stomach, cheek buried in the blankets of ellie's bed.
"you're just agreeing with me," ellie grumbled, suddenly twinging with annoyance at the way your tank top strap was sliding down your shoulder.
"i'm agreeing with you because i agree," you huffed, wrinkling your nose at her.
ellie placed a firm hand on your hip, shoving you to the side.
"ellie!" you exclaimed, rubbing your eyes in an attempt to wipe the sleep from your system.
"scoot over," ellie instructed, pulling up the blankets.
"hm?" you questioned while you obliged anyway. you wanted to sleep over, to stay with your best friend for as long as possible but you didn't want to be a bother.
"you're sleeping over, aren't you?" ellie acknowledged, holding the covers up for you. the room was dark but lit lightly from the window. ellie prayed that you couldn't see the way in which she held her breath.
you adjusted your body, looking curiously at ellie. "do you mind?"
ellie shook her head, patting the spot next to her. "'course not."
that was all the confirmation that you needed. you slid your body under the blankets, next to ellie but mindful of the distance between yourselves. if you adjusted again you would be touching, so you stayed still and didn't move.
it was quiet, and you couldn't tell if it was awkward or comforting. maybe a little of both, and that was okay.
"are you tired?" you questioned, turning on your side to face ellie.
ellie copied, turning to face you and scanning your features in the dark. "yeah. is that okay?"
"yeah," you whispered. "do you have patrol tomorrow again?"
ellie nodded, and then realized you might not be able to see her. "yeah. with dina. but don't worry about leaving early, okay?"
you sighed, allowing your body to sink further into the bedding.
sleep was enveloping you quicker than expected, but it didn't surprise you based on how comforting you find it to be in ellie's presence. you were nearly off, until ellie's voice broke the silence and threw you out of your sleepy trance.
"it is pretty," she whispered.
"what?"
"your new skirt," ellie replied softly, earning a sleepy grin from you.
you muttered a quiet thank you, cheeks burning and mind whirling. you wanted to say more, but you could tell that ellie was already falling asleep and you didn't want to deprive her of it.
she was so honest, so sweet sometimes. you forced your eyes open, studying the girl sleeping next to you. it made your eyebrows furrow, the way your heart pounded when ellie was this close.
shit.
turning away, you shut your eyes again and willed sleep to come.
it must've, at some point, because before you knew it the sun was causing you to blink awake and you were stretching in an empty bed. the absence never failed to make your stomach drop, even though you already knew where ellie was.
laying alone in your best friend's bed made you feel a certain level of pathetic that was almost unknown.
you could've waited around until she got back, but you forced yourself up and away.
you would see ellie again later anyway, so it was better to have some space to yourself for awhile.
it wasn't anything that you could really make sense of, you just needed to clear your head before ellie was back consuming nearly all of your senses.
it wasn't a big deal, you would tell yourself over and over.
over and over until it felt true.

I'm having a tiny bit of a Mihawk brainrot if you can't tell. I'm not sure if his past was ever really elaborated on so there are most likely mistakes in my interpretation because I am not caught up to the Anime yet.
Just imagine...
Growing up together with the very boy that will in the future claim not only the title of "Strongest Swordsman in the World" but will also eventually become one of the Seven Warlord's of the sea. Hawk Eyes Mihawk is a name that will one day struck fear in everyone that hears it, whether it's a pirate, a marine or an innocent citizen.
Yet you have known him ever since both of you were just tiny children. You know all of his quirks, his likes and dislikes and all of his most sacred secrets and most embarrassing moments which he made you promise would be kept only between the two of you.
And Mihawk knows you just as much. He knows of all your dreams and your biggest fears, has been your shoulder to cry on whenever your heart was struck with grief, has witnessed all of your shenanigans and despite his better judgement has even participated in some of your reckless decisions, even if to simply be the one who ultimately saves you from any big troubles.
The dynamic between the two of you has always been like this. You have always been the dreamer, the one who has their heads in the clouds and loves romanticising everything. He can't even recall how often you spent your time excitedly recounting to him a dream you had in your sleep or proclaimed to him excitedly about a new ambition you had in life, every week a new one. One time you told him you wanted to be a doctor, another one you wanted to be a vet and the next time you announced your new dream of wanting to be a shipwright. You were like a pot just foaming over with dreams and positivity.
Mihawk on the other hand has always been your voice of reasoning and the guardian who is always right next to you when your excitement led to an impulsive and poorly made choice. He has always been the one who was your silent yet loyal shadow and the one you could always count on, even if he has dubbed you as an "idiot". He has always been the one who just sat there and silently listened to all of your excited rambling when the words were tumbling out faster from your mouth than you could form them, even despite reminding you that you should probably soon make up your mind whenever you discarded your old dream for a new one. You truly are a scatterbrained fool at times yet he has a weak spot for that bright glimmer in your eyes, a light as bright as the sun.
As adolescence catches up with you two, you stay the same dreamy fool who tends to daydream throughout the day, so deeply immersed in your own thoughts that time and your surroundings are forgotten.
Mihawk remains as the one person you are closest with and is the one who protects you from walking into doors, buildings or people when he realises that you space out again as you let your imagination run wild. Yet as he grows up from a boy to a man, his feelings for you mature. Both of you have always been exceptionally close to each other but it is only as his mind matures and becomes more complex that he starts questioning how he truly feels about you. You have always been the dearest person to his heart but as a child he has never truly considered your relationship as deeply as he does now. You've just always been the person he has known best and with whom he has shared the most, from the good to the bad. You have always been special to him yet it is only now that he realises just how special you really are to him.
He loves you.
He loves your ditzy and airheaded personality, your joyful laugh and the constant glow in your eyes as you look at the world around you as if you are discovering it for the first time and he especially loves the excited shimmer in your eyes when you tell him about your dreams.
Knowledge alone is only half the work though. Mihawk, who was back then only a flicker of what he will be in the future, doesn't know how to express those emotions he has for you. All he knows that he feels very intensely for you and he finds himself overwhelmed with this discovery. It is all chaotic and hectic inside of his heart and his mind. It is something new that frightens him over so slightly as he doesn't know how to control his feelings just yet which is why he decides to wait. To wait until he has understood his love for you a bit better before he will tell you how he feels about you.
Eventually both of you leave the island you grew up together in favor setting sail and heading towards the Grand Line. Both of you had dreams of your own yet neither one of you was at that time ready to separate from each other just yet. Mihawk's feelings for you have only grown since he became cognizant of them for the first time and they only intensify with each passing day, not enabling him to understand them nor to fully control them.
So used has he grown to having you all for himself though that he finds himself uncomfortable and possessive when you choose to engage with locals on an island both of you have landed on, an eerily intense look in those golden eyes of his that seemingly try to pierce the very soul of the person you choose to give your attention too despite him standing right next to you. It always spooks people and you can only slap him on his chest as you chastise him for his rude behavior, although he knows that you are never truly mad at him. Even he is secretly just glad that you give him your undivided attention again, even if he is grumbling as he defends himself against your little lectures.
Both of you enter the Grandline together and it is then that you finally decide to bring up the idea of you two finally separating. Initially Mihawk is quite reluctant as you suggest that idea to him. Wouldn't it be safer for both of you to stick together? After all neither of you two knows what lies ahead in those oceans. You are quite persistent though as you explain to him that you would like to achieve your dreams by yourself and that you think he should do the same. You clarify yourself by assuring him that you don't plan to never see him again but that you would like to do your best without his help with your own strength.
He feels the lump in his throat as he hears your reasons behind your suggestion, his mind struggling to imagine how it would be if you wouldn't been with him and he finds himself drawing a blank as soon as he attempts to consider it. You are someone he has always known throughout his entire life and even hearing your suggestion has his heart shaking with the thought of your absence if that were to really happen.
You two have always been together. Why would you want to change that now?
Both of you spend a lot of time arguing over this issue but ultimately you win him over, the light in your eyes persuading him by tugging at all of his heartstrings. His obsession has just started to bud and it isn't until a while later that it springs to its full awakening which is why Mihawk eventually caves in and agrees to your suggestion.
Both of you separate at the next island you land on but both of you make a promise to each other. That you'll meet again on this very island one year from now on to see how far you two have come with your dreams.
His heart is heavy when both of you bid each other goodbye, his hands holding yours tightly as he relishes one last time for the next long year in your brightness. The words he has been wanting to tell you for a while now linger on his tongue, the temptation strong to let you know about his feelings for you in a last feeble hope that his love may change your mind. Yet he knows as he looks into your beaming eyes that your mind has already been set so he can only swallow his feelings back, although he vows that when you two will see each other again, he will be strong enough to finally confess his love to you.
One year passes and he returns to the same island as a completely different person. Within only one year Mihawk has risen to unbelievable fame. He feels content with what he has achieved within the last year as he has grown into the strong man he swore to be one year ago on this very island and considers himself now ready to finally tell you about how he truly feels for you. The budding obsession as blossomed over the last year as your absence has forced him to fully acknowledge as well as embrace everything he has been feeling for you and now more than ever before does Mihawk plan to keep you by his side.
Only that you never show up.
Initially Mihawk decides to ignore the growing heaviness in his heart as he decides that maybe you experience some delay. The weather in the Grandline is after all infamous for its changing mood. So he waits for you.
One day.
Two days.
Three days...
With every sunset that he witnesses on the island, he feels a part of him silently dying with it. Emotions brew up inside of him as a few days turn into nearly an entire month and he finally can't deny the haunting truth anymore he has been trying to deny.
You won't return.
His heart shatters as he finally acknowledges this fact. There are so many emotions inside of him, far too many for him to identify each one of them as they blur together into one big storm that has his chest tightening and his heart silently screaming.
Why didn't you return?
He can only come up with two possible explanations and he truly doesn't know which one would be worse. Either you have forgotten about him and the promise you two made or you have died on the sea.
He dedicates months trying to find out the truth about what happened to you. He reads every single newspaper, somehow dreading yet hoping to find an article mentioning your name yet he is always left disappointed. He travels to the island he knew you were heading to after both of you separated in hopes of gathering information yet no one from the locals can give him any useful information about you. He goes through all the newest bounty posters to see if your name and face appear anywhere only to be left with a growing hole in his heart.
The last hope of his is finally shattered when he sails all the way back to the place both of you grew up in only to be met with the same dreadful emptiness as no one in the town has heard of you since him and you left the island on a ship over a year ago.
Nothing.
There is no trace of your existance in the world, no matter how long he searches for you as if you were only a fickle imagination of his own. He doesn't know whether you have forgotten about him, if something has happened to you or if you have met your end somewhere on those unpredictable seas.
It is a torment unlike anything he has ever experienced as the lack of knowledge drains him slowly and tortures him as he is unable to find any closure. No matter what, Mihawk seems to be destined to suffer one way or another. Hope is titled as the most beautiful thing in the world yet it is hope that only prolongs his suffering as a part of him is unable to accept the possibility of your death until he has proof.
As months turn into years, his heart shrinks and withers like a flower deprived of water and sunlight. The ambitious and determined man turns into a husk of what he was, his dream stolen from him without having been able to do anything. There is a growing resentment sharply directed against himself as the last few days with you haunt him.
He shouldn't have agreed to separate from you. If he would have just been more insistent, would you still be here with him?
The anguish of his lost dream nestles itself deeply into his shriveled heart as the perpetual heartbreak changes him. Colours seem to fade from the world around him as a feeling of numbness spreads like roots in the earth. There is nothing that excites him anymore, not even when he is dubbed as the strongest swordsman in the world. The title and the reputation that comes with it hold no meaning to him anymore, not when he doesn't have you to share his glory with. The hole in his chest is torn open as time flies by and every ship that crosses his path is dragged into his suffering as he wields Yoru against them. There is no meaning behind the carnage he leaves behind but he has lost sight of why he should care, the dwelling bitterness and sorrow inside of him tainting his honor.
He has lost the ability to live, feels more akin to a ghost as he drifts through the seas and clashes with opponents who are swatted away like flies only to be forgotten by him soon after.
There is a new listlessness clinging to him, his sharp eyes unable to see the worthwhile in this world now that you are gone. Everything is buried deep inside his chest and mind though so that no one can ever have those memories and feelings he has shared with you. Some people hoard gold and jewels, Mihawk's most precious treasure are the memories he has made with you over the years as there is nothing else he has left of you.
When the Marine offers him the title of a Warlord, he is only half the man he used to be. Surely you would have objected to this offer as you have always been rather warily of the government and if he would have been the man he once was, he would have sliced the person who had made such a ridiculous offer to him into dices.
That man is already dead though...
He accepts the offer after a while, although not because he is suddenly fond of the very people he used to hunt down. He just doesn't know what he should do with himself anymore. It feels like his life has halted and is just waiting for you to return, even if by now he has a feeling that he will never see you again, forever left in the darkness about your fate.
Someone once said that time heals all wounds. Those words are a lie. Mihawk doesn't heal as years just seem to trickle by faster than he can even realise. There is nothing of substance to his life, nothing worth to remember. Only the hole where his heart used to be reminds him that he is still breathing, the haunting emptiness inside of him something that will remain the only thing loyal to him until his body rots away.
The presence is barely something he takes notice of as he only lives in the past in his mind, clinging to every memory he has of you out of unadulterated fear that he may eventually forget what your voice sounded like or how you always looked at him with those bright eyes. If even those memories were to abandon him, he would lose even the grasp of his own identity within the never-ending cycle of the dull and forgetful life he lives now.
Many years later a miracle happens though. He finds you. On a random island within the Grand Line, he finds you again.
He doesn't even want to believe it when he initially sees your face. Maybe his mind is just playing tricks on him out of delusional desperation but as golden eyes trail you, he realises that he hasn't gone mad. It is you...
The weight of uncertainty that he has been carrying around with him for so many nights suddenly evaporates, its haunting shadow covering him no more.
There is no relief though for him though. No matter what outcome would have proved to be true, he always knew that he would end up getting hurt.
Why are you here? Where were you during all those years? How could you abandon him and betray his feelings so easily?
In that moment, as he stands there motionlessly as only his gaze follows you, he feels like a small boy again. Helpless, confused and hurt beyond words. Emotions he has been hiding behind inner walls for years threaten to burst out of him and an urge to unleash all of those seething emotions overcomes him yet none of those thoughts or desires are ever put into action. As if someone put a spell on him, Mihawk finds himself unable to move, as rigid as a statue. Perhaps his body is just in shock and in hindsight it is good that he finds himself unable to act in that moment to gain some semblance of control again. Otherwise who knows what he would have done in that moment.
He watches as you stroll through the city, your laughter which used to bring him only comfort and warmth seemingly mocking him as he feels a new shadow swallowing him up and filling his heart with a bitter taste.
Betrayal. You betrayed him.
You willingly chose to break the promise you two made decades ago and discarded him as if he were an disposable object instead of the person who spent your entire youth with you.
Did you even once consider how he would feel? Do you have any idea what he turned into because of your decision?
You left him! Didn't even bother to contact him to let him know that you were still alive! Whilst he spent endless days and nights mourning after you, driving himself insane as he didn't know of your fate, you were on this island and enjoyed your life!
A life without him.
Did he mean that little to you for you to make the decision to never see him again so easily? Did all the years he was by your side mean nothing to you?
His heart dies as he can only stand there and follow you with his gaze. All heartbreak, all of the grief that have eaten him alive from the inside out for countless seasons drain in the new cold rage that suddenly floods his veins, his pupils narrowing as his gaze zooms in on your smiling face.
What use did it have to mourn someone who lives? What use did it have to feel heartbroken over someone who clearly doesn't care about the pain he went through?
Mihawk has already wasted too much time dwelling in his own self-pity and in that moment he despises you for the shell you have turned him into.
You made the decision to disappear without a word. Now it is time for you to pay the consequences of that decision. He isn't here to catch up with you for old times sake after all.
No. He is here to take you.
And just as you didn't care about his feelings during all those years, this time he won't care for yours either. He doesn't care to hear your reasons and he doesn't care about your apologies if you should dare to voice them to his face. It is already too late for any of that.
Years too late.

Senior year is finally here! You thought that this time, the teachers would be more lenient with you and your classmates, but not at all. In fact, they even got stricter... They assigned you a half year-long work, which would be worth 30% of your final grade. What does the work consist of, you ask? Making a complete study of the life of a student you need to pick and paint it.
But... you can't pick a friend.

All of a sudden you see Eijirou get up and pick up his things quickly, startling you.
âSorry I need to go right now, thanks for your help! i forgot i needed to be somewhereâ he chuckles apologetically.
âItâs alright, let me at least accompany you! Whatâs happening today?â you ask as you pick your things and shove them into your bag before following him.
âI completely forgot we had a match in another city and the bus is leaving in 10 minutes. The others are already waiting for meâ he says, speeding up his pace and you do your best to keep up.
âOh right! Hanta told me about it. I didn't know it was today, shit you better get here quickly, you want to run?â you offer as you chuckle.
âIf it doesn't bother you, sure!â he laughs and the two of you begin running in the direction of the gymnasium where the bus was parked.
You were able to get there in only three minutes thankfully. You both stop and try to catch your breath.
âWeâreâŚhereâ Iâm here!â Eijirou pants, hand on his chest.âI lost track of timeâŚâ
âAt least youâre here now come on, get insideâ the coach points to the bus with a nod of his head.
Hanta smiles and you make your way to him.
âGood luck on your matchâ
âI would have more luck if my lucky charm was cheering me onâ Hanta replies with a grin.
âOh yeah? Is that what I am now..â you poke his chest.
Hanta shrugged his shoulders playfully.
âMmhâ he nods. âDo you have anything better to do today?â he leans on the bus.
You sigh knowing that you did in fact have nothing else to do besides staying on campus to study or just go home. So if you had to choose, youâd rather stay with him.
âIf itâs fine with your coach then yeahâ you nod.
âOh you donât have to worry about thatâ he guides you inside the bus and you both sit next to each other while the others sit behind and next to you as you all enjoy the rest of the ride in a joyful atmosphere.
The whole entire time you and Hanta were glued to each other, shoulders always touching. You swore you felt his hand brush yours a few times and that made your stomach turn.
This was getting so frustrating, you didn't want to admit it out loud because if you did you would realize that theseâŚfeelings were actually true and they couldnât be true right?
Was what you felt for him truly more than friendship, wasnât it going to ruin everything between you two if he knew?
Hanta was just so funny and charming, he always made your day a whole lot brighter. He always knew the right words to say when you were feeling down. All the little gestures he does for and my god was he good lookingâŚ
His gorgeous brown eyes that made you weak in the knees whenever he looked at youâ
âYou alright?â you felt someoneâs hand land on your arm, it was Hanta.
âOh yeah yeah sorry!â you snap out of your trance looking down at your cards trying to stop the blush from rising more to your cheeks.
This was so embarrassing why did you space out in the middle of the game to think about that.
âYouâve been more lost in your thoughts than usual Y/n, is there something on your mindâ Mina asks you with a knowing grin on her face.
âNothing, nothing at allâ you say almost too defensive, causing the others to look at you with a confused face before laughing.
âSuuureâ Denki says putting down his card and yelling âUNOâ
âOh come onâŚâ everyone sighs in defeat and you chuckle. You realized you really need to talk to your best friends.
When you arrived, the other team was already here and they were looking quite determined.
You sat on a bench next to Mina who said you were âassistingâ her in her manager duties. The court was way bigger up close and the height of the roof was really impressive. It made everything look so much bigger.
The boys were stretching a bit further away and practicing together before the match began. There werenât a lot of people watching since this was only a friendly match between two schools and yet you hoped the boys would win this.
As they began the first set, everything was going smoothly and at the end, they won. The second set came and was a bit more challenging and the opposite team won.
After the referee whistled for the break the coach had demanded, they came back panting, sweat forming at the back of their necks.
You hand them out their towels and bottles with an encouraging smile.
âYou all are doing great, youâre going to win thisâ
The boys all stare at me and grin, Eijirou and Denki hugging me with one arm wrapped around my shoulder.
âThanks y/n for cheering us on, weâll do our bestâ Eijirou grins with a toothy smile. âDamn right weâre going to win thisâ Katsuki follows with a determined look.
âHanta canât lose this if youâre hereâ he walks past Hanta and nudges him with his shoulder which results in him glaring at Katsuki with what you thought was red creeping up his cheeks? His head was turned so you couldnât see well.
After their coach gave them a motivational speech, another whistle echoed in the gymnasium and they all returned to the court.
The last 2 sets were getting more and more intense.
Denki was giving in his all at trying to receive the ball well for his teammates. Katsuki, who was the middle blocker, ran amazingly fast each time to reach the ball Hanta or Eijirou set for him. There were two other hitters you didnât know but they were also doing great.
You could see through their eyes how fast they were analyzing everything that was going down in the match, from the position to the eyes. You had to watch them carefully to notice all of this, someone who was sitting too far away wouldnât be able to.
You were happy with this opportunity the guys gave you to assist in their match today, instead you wouldâve been probably in bed sleeping or doing god knows what.
They won the third set and now you werenât even sitting on the bench anymore but were standing and screaming encouraging words with Mina. Everything was going even faster now, the ball going up and down, left and right in every direction.
Scoring point after point, the score was now at 24-22 for the guys. They only needed one more to win this.
And so came one of the most stressful moments of your life as you carefully watched the ball in the air. Almost touching the ground but Denki was here to receive it but so was the other team's libero.
This went on for what felt like hours, none of the teams wanted to lose even if it only was a friendly match which showed how passionate they truly were.
Hanta was now serving, a serious look on his face as he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath in. Everyone was focused and the whole place was quiet. You could almost hear their heart beat.
He opened his eyes, took a few steps ahead. Throwing the ball in the air, you began to see everything in slow motion.
Hanta slightly ran, crouched to gain momentum before jumping, his hand making contact with the ball as it came down.
You blinked and heard a loud thud from the other side of the court.
Nobody moved before you and Mina screamed in happiness as you both hugged each other jumping in place and everyone began loudly clapping their hands.
The boys all collide with each other as they all hug in a circle.
You continue clapping with a big smile on your face when Hanta suddenly looks up and makes eye contact with you. He runs over to you before his arms wrap themselves around your waist and lifts you up in the air as you hold onto his shoulders.
âWe won!â he laughs, spinning you both around. You laugh along with him and throw your head back.
âYou did, you did! You were incredible, you all were. Oh my god that match was insaneâ you chuckle as he puts you back on the ground.
âThank you for coming and cheering me on hermosaâ he says looking tenderly in your eyes, hands still on your waist.
âOf course Hanta.â

Good Fences (Fluffuary #13)
FEB13: Night Out
âDid she book out the whole place, then?â John asked, pulling his pearl buttons through their starched holes as he dressed into his shirt.
âYep, very fancy,â you told him, fixing his tie and feeling the silk slip through your manicured fingers.
Your best friend, Cana, had just graduated from her masterâs program, and she had invited you to her graduation party. When you mentioned that you were housing three additional British soldiers, she had extended the invitation to include them most enthusiastically. Â
The boys had dressed up nice. Cana had indeed booked out an entire rooftop bar, and as a woman who liked to party, she was really pulling out all the stops tonight.Â
She was dressed all in black, surrounded by her classmates and a few of your mutual friends, but when she saw you coming through the doors with your literal army squad, she made a bee-line straight for you. Her bejeweled arms were spread wide, her perfectly set curls bounced as she ran, flinging herself into your arms and squealing her hellos.Â
âCana!â You laughed, holding her as she spun around you with glee, âCongratulations! Iâm so proud of you.â
âGoddamn, babe. Me too,â she huffed, exasperated and sarcastically funny.Â
You watched her roll her eyes and smile,Â
âThank fuck grad school is done. Now, introduce me! You brought dinner, I see.â
âOh, God, Cana. You canât say that!â You protested.Â
But, Kyle heard her comment and brushed you aside, reaching for her hand and taking it in his,
âLet the woman speak, babes. She looks hungry.â
Cana giggled, high pitched and joyful, letting Kyle lead her back to her table. You looked at John and mouthed an apology.Â
âDinnae fash, bonnie. Gaz is in his own version of heaven,â Johnny chuckled, âHe never could turn down a curvy lass.â
âSheâs a wild one, but I love her,â you explained, trying to dismiss your friendâs audacious behavior.
âSheâs grand, love. Let me buy you a drink,â John wrapped his hand around your waist and pulled you in to his body. His soft clothes crumpled against your side, and you noticed Johnâs palm sliding lower and lower down your back.Â
âSpeaking of blokes in heaven,â Simon quipped, taking a long drag from his cigarette. He cast a long gaze at his captain, and you thought you saw the hint of a smirk on his lips.
âAye,â John puffed up a little, defensively, âAnd what of it?â
âHeaven looks good on you, Capân,â Johnny clapped him on the shoulder and pointed to the bar, âYou were sayinâ somethinâ about a wee drink?â
You talked and drank and laughed all night with John and his friends. Cana couldnât keep her hands off of Kyle, and he seemed to be loving every moment of it. By the end of the evening, your feet were aching, but you had heard story after story of John being the hero and even more stories of him being the victim of his menâs pranks. They seemed to have an incredible bond together that made you admire John even more.Â
âAre you havinâ fun tonight, love?â John asked, whispering in your ear, letting the whiskers of his beard tickle your neck and sensitive lobe as he did.Â
You turned your head to him, smiling, whispering just as low,
âYes, I am. But, I canât stop staring at you in that suit.â
âAnd you in that dress. MmmâŚâ John ran a long finger up your thigh, pushing the dressâs hem higher and higher until it was truly scandalous.Â
âMaybe you should take me home,â you suggested, your eyes full of lust, âSo, you can take it off.â
âGrab your purse. Now.â
Check out the schedule here.

I feel like Roger loved both Buggy and Shanks equally, itâs just that he REALLY saw himself in Shanks and less so in Buggy, which made Buggy feel like the less loved child, just because he didnât quite have the same âOh wow we are just immediately on the same wavelengthâ like these two
If you asked Roger though he would have spoken about both of them with equal pride. He may see himself in Shanks but Buggy is ⌠Buggy is just his own entire thing and sometimes Roger is kind of stupefied at this young pirate just putting so much into showmanship and being FLASHY and by god this is a greedy little shit but that just means he is just always going after something. And once he gets it heâs gonna show it off in the flashiest way possible thatâs just so infectiously joyful to witness. Also- bombs?! Who taught him that?! Rayleigh did you teach him that? He didnât teach him that! Howâd that boy get so crafty! Hey guys check it out Buggy made a BOMB! Haha, hey may never know quite whatâs going on with this brat but what a lad! His little firecrackerâŚ
Buggy wasnât unloved but he was a massive causality of Shanks âchosen oneâ status (another one of these is Shanks himself imo but thatâs getting into theory corner), because in his eyes that didnât leave him to be anything else.
Yessss I do agree that Roger didn't really have a favourite, just different approaches to the kids. If there was any favouritism it would be unintentional, like I've said before. Because I really don't think Roger was that type of man. He loved those kids, they were basically like his sons.
I also agree that he saw himself in Shanks. And he saw something completely different in Buggy. Not just in the way that he was different from himself and Shanks, but he was different from everyone. Roger has never met someone like Buggy before and that fascinated him. This little kid was so... flashy, as he put in his own terms. And he was a go-getter. Roger was convinced that kid had the potential to flip the world upside down if it would get him what he wanted. And there's something so refreshing about that kind of unending determination. The only thing that stood in the way of that was his inferiority complex. And oh did Roger try to make it better. He tried his best to treat him and Shanks equally. Always told them both they could do anything they put their mind to, and that he loved and cared for them deeply. But it just didn't seem to penetrate through Buggy's thick skull. Him giving his hat to Shanks did NOT help. I think that small action was truly the catalyst for the "chosen one" complex you talked about. I mean the effects of it are still very much present, with Luffy and all...
I don't think Buggy was really a casualty in Shanks and his "chosen one" status (at least not as big of a casualty as Shanks himself) because he didn't let himself get stuck because of it, like Shanks did. He knew he couldn't reach his full potential in his friend's shadow, so he left. He started a new life because he refused to be stagnant. And he had a goal, a dream, that did not match what Shanks wanted. So of course he left, because Buggy always goes after what he wants. He chose to go forward, but Shanks stayed there. He could not move forward. He was destined to be forever that little boy on Oro Jackson, the pirate king's chosen one, and that teen Buggy left in Loguetown. (Taylor Swift - Right where you left me, literally)
On a lighter note... those damn bombs!!! Who taught him???? Literally no one. I'm convinced he just threw shit together. And honestly, Buggy is very smart. He figured how things work very quickly at a young age, and he was always good with his hands. It's another thing Roger always felt proud about him. "His little firecracker..." Anon shut up right now I will cry đđ that's so cute
Thank you for this!! Sorry for replying late, I knew I was gonna write something long so I wanted to do it when I had the time
