Halloween trick-or-treat prompts masterlist
For my own personal tracking, a semi-up-to-date list of the prompts and whether they've been filled for eventual treating on Halloween! Feel free to chime in in the replies with ones you'd particularly like to see filled if it's not getting love. I kinda picked the first one in the list and will otherwise do them as fancy strikes me.
Eventually I'll probably link these to their actual fills once published on Halloween.
What is trick-or-treat?
It's basically me sourcing a bunch of prompts for short fills (likely around 100-500 words apiece) in the Resonant 'verse that I can give out on Halloween as "treats" when people send me a "trick" ask!
Note that it's highly unlikely that I'll get to all of them, since there are over 60 of them, and I probably won't do more than 1 a day. Bold = complete, italics = up next.
Original post with prompts if anyone wants to comb through the replies to read the "fuller" prompts.

Wow, so out of all of the brutal, hedonistic serial killers Carlisle calls friends, it's Alphard who makes him go, "woah, this guy is ****ing nuts".
Heck, he even tells other people to keep a wide berth from Alphard. This is the same guy who's best friend/probably former lover is a ruthless warlord.
His son is freakin' EDWARD CULLEN! Yet Alphard Black is where he draws the line.
Alphard's no better either. He is more than willing to look past the fact his schoolboy crush is a mass murdering terrorist/ cult leader who got his niece into said cult and wants to destroy Alphard's world and culture because he's just so freakin' petty.
But, Alphard takes one look at Carlisle and goes, "**** this guy".
(Anon is referring to this post.)
Aro and Alphard are very different characters and Carlisle and Tom Riddle are different as well, in that Carlisle is incredibly forgiving and always willing to see the best in others but his forgiveness for your bad deeds depend on why you did them, and whether you repent. Edward was tormented by his thirst and had to quench it, Carlisle forgives him and is overjoyed Edward found a conscience on his own. Aro is a killer who knows he can survive off animal blood, and who chooses to kill his own kind, that Carlisle considered him a friend for centuries implies to me that he accepts things can be complicated.
Tellingly, Aro only loses Carlisle's friendship when Carlisle comes to doubt that Aro is just, and the Cullens are never kicked out for losing control of themselves but he wouldn't let someone who chooses to live on the human diet live among them. Choice is the key, and he knows the thirst for human blood is bad enough that not everybody can help it.
The trouble with Alphard Black is that while he isn't a cackling villain, he doesn't see why his loved ones should suffer if there's anything he can do to stop it. He couldn't stand the idea of a shard of Tom Riddle suffering eternally and doesn't think twice about sacrificing Snape when the opportunity comes (and immediately decides to sacrifice two more people in Harry Potter and the How Can You See Into My Eyes Like Open Doors by myself and @theoriginalcarnivorousmuffin, when it becomes necessary to save the Locket and the Diary).
Aro is all about ideals, Alphard is all about family.
Put otherwise, Alphard wouldn't kill Didyme, it wouldn't occur to him, while Aro would be 100% done with Carlisle if Carlisle decided to become Lord Voldemort.

four months into getting to know each other, shouto finds him by touya-nii's shrine. his little brother gently sits down beside him and offers a small prayer.
"yumi-nee-san," natsuo wonders if his little brother will ever drop the second honorific, "said you were the closest to him," shouto says quietly.
after all these years and the use of past tense still makes his heart break. 'you are the closest to him' he wants to correct but that wouldn't make sense anymore. touya-nii hasn't been talked about in the present tense since before middle school. does shouto even remember a time before nii-san's dea-, disappearance?
"yeah, i was," he says, eyes never leaving the photo. it's the one nii-san took for sixth-grade picture day. kaa-san had got him all dressed up and he had hated it. somedays he thinks if he looks close enough, he'll see the displeased pout on nii-san face. "why?"
his little brother says nothing for a long time, back ramrod straight. natsuo has no idea what's going on in that head of his. shouto has so few tells that he's practically a blank slate. natsuo hates his father.
then slowly and so quietly, he has to strain his ears to catch it, shouto stammers out, "do-, do you think he would have liked me?"
natsuo's immediate reaction is to say 'yes'. yes, of course, touya-nii would've loved you. yes, of course, touya-nii would've crossed the heavens for you. yes, of course, he would've loved you shouto; you're his precious younger brother.
but he remembers the way nii-san used to spit out shouto's name when he was a kid. the way his brother's mouth wrapped around it, the face he made, like he had just eaten something disgusting. he remembers the way touya-nii had become almost crazed by the end, hellbent on proving himself the rightful heir to their shitty father's legacy. he remembers the way touya-nii had said, "i just need to prove that i'm better than him,"; the 'him' said with such bitterness and contempt.
he knows instantly that touya-nii would not have liked shouto. that this house and his father would have twisted any ounce of love, nii-san would've held towards shouto, into jealousy and hatred.
(this house may have ruined all of them but it only ever broke two of them.)
natsuo can't say any of that to shouto. his kind little brother who forgave him for not being there. his amazing little brother who falls in love with every cat he sees. his wonderful little brother who has a wickedly dry sense of humor. his soft baby brother who loves him and yumi-nee with a passion. his tender-hearted baby brother who still worries if his long-gone older brother would've liked him.
no, natsuo can't tell shouto that nii-san wouldn't have like him. shouto will internalize it like he does with everything else that hurts him. and there is already so much that hurts shouto, he will not add to that list. his baby brother smiles these days, nothing big like his green-haired friend, but quiet, lovely, ones all the same. shouto talks more these days. they have dinner together when natsuo is home. his baby brother laughs now. it's a miracle like nothing else in this world.
shouto is the best thing to come out of their house and natsuo will die before he ever hurts his little brother. so instead, he curls an arm around shouto's shoulders and pulls him into a loose side-hug.
"of course!" he lies cheerfully, ignoring the ache in his chest, "touya-nii would've loved you. you're his — and our —precious little brother after all. there is no universe in which he wouldn't have loved you."
the tips of his baby brother's ears go red and his pleased little answering smile makes the ache of lie go away. natsuo will tell a thousand more lies if it means shouto never stops smiling like that.

i find it vehemently poetic that theo was raised, and used, and abused, by three doctors, surgeons, for ten years of his life, and when he finally starts to craft himself some sort of a life outside of their captivity, he finds most solace in liam, who's own stepdad is a doctor, a surgeon, but a caring one, who's always been supportive and never hurt nor laid a bad hand on his stepson. and i find it beautiful that, through fics - because the writers never did them the justice they deserved - we get to see theo realize that life's not all bad; it's not all pain and suffering, and people aren't all bad, adults aren't all dangerous, doctors aren't all malicious. and it takes him a while to learn this, and maybe an even longer time to trust liam's dad, but in order to get closer to liam, he has to learn to trust his dad, and it's really hard at first, but before he even realizes, it's easier than he could ever imagine.
and i like to imagine, too, that maybe theo grows enough, and gains enough trust, that he works alongside his dad as a medical assistant. maybe he was around liam's house long enough - because god forbid liam let him live in his truck any longer - that his dad worked up the courage for a couple days to invite him to go to work with him. because despite caring for him deeply and starting to love him like a son, he didn't want to step on his toes or drive him away, but theo wasn't in high school anymore, nor did he plan on attending college, but he's learning he has loads of medical experience, and despite the tragic things that happened to him, he seems to enjoy the field. so, he brings him to work one day and opens his mind to the fact that a real hospital is full of people who truly want to help, and do the best they can for their patients, and offer nothing but genuine care and gentleness to those in need. and after a day of watching and learning what science and medicine is supposed to be, theo finds himself breaking down on the drive home and liam's dad, a surgeon, but a kind one, comforts him, and assures him he's okay, and he doesn't have to go to work with him again if he doesn't want to, and hugs him, warm and close, and rubs his back in a way he hasn't felt since he was eight years old and still being read to by his mother, ten years ago. and in that moment, he realizes how safe he is now, with liam, and with his parents, and he realizes they care for him, truly, and won't let him get hurt, and he realizes he wants to work with his dad, he wants to explore the other side of science, he wants to do something good, and wants to be good, both for himself and for others. so he watches a little longer, and eventually, he's invited to help, passing tools and reading charts, and with time, he's allowed to work on his own, he's trusted, and he does his job well. and liam's dad offers praise when he does well; he provides comfort when he's hurting, on particularly busy days, or on days when they do the best they can, but can't save everyone. and for the first time in his life, he feels like he has a home, a family even. he feels - he knows - he has people that care about him and value his presence in their life; it doesn't feel faked, it's genuine, and it's obvious. and, in the middle of the night, when the two return home from a particularly late shift, they find liam and his mom awake in the kitchen, laughing, despite the fact that liam has school in the morning and his mom has work, but neither seem to care about that. they usher the doctor and doctor-to-be into the room and share the video on the tiny phone screen, and soon, all four are bursting with melodic, sleep deprived laughter, and in that moment, theo realizes the truth about himself he'd never thought possible - he's happy. actually, undoubtedly, happy.
