Beauty or Brains

Tonight, I yelled at a young man that has a deep crush on me. He is young, rude, and 22 years young. I didn’t have to yell at him like I did but for one, I’m 38. 2. These young men talk really crazy. It’s like they think they own you. Well is that a men thing? Tonight, I didn’t want to be bothered and just wish to walk my dog without any interference. But here is a male vying for my attention. He’s gonna talk to me anyway he see fit and say anything to get my attention. “Let me see my DOG” “OH you not talking.”.

This is a young man that I have reached out to and he don’t take my offers. I text him and he leave me on seen yet when he’s outside with the bros, he got some smart shit to say to me. Oh gawd it grinds my gears. Just simple people. 

 I know if I looked my age these young men would respect me more. Gift and curse thing. I decided to take my picture off of here because immediately I get a DM. I have military sexual trauma and going to the VA hospital without sexual harassment is rare. So cat-calling, men trying to talk to me in a “oh your’e so Hooot”, really triggers some PTSD for me. Men that talk to me like I’m a human is what I go for. You know, a “Hello” or “what’s up”, is okay for me. 

Most people think I’m in my late twenties. It’s a gift and curse. Men from 16 to 75 has hit on me in one day. Now I’m no freaking Naomi but hey they like it and love it. I just like to be left alone or engage in enlightening conversation or laugh. Pretty much it. I love to flirt and really miss flirting. I was a HUGE flirt in my twenties and today I rarely flirt. I think it’s somewhat sad. Covid-19, plays a part, my absence from facebook and IG too. 

I’m very introverted on top of lack of trust with people makes me the type that always carry my Airpods to block out people talking to me, tonight I wish I had them.. I like to call them men blockers. Anything that can distract me from not being distracted by them. Tonight I lost my cool and not happy about it.  I don’t like my space to be terrorized by a foreign enemy, I mean person with toxic energy. I love a great convo and a simple Hello. 

I wrote on here one time and became discouraged. I wish to be taken seriously and all aspects in my life. When I was in my twenties I used my beauty for an advantage. I was taken advantage ALOT, used, and most people believe that pretty people are just plain stupid. Did I turn down the bartender job at the strip club because I felt I was better? Yes. Do I regret it? Yes. Damn I was young and wished I did it but I was living for people back then.  Different periods in my life I would try to hide my beauty to be taken serious. Then I learned that my beauty can help with many things like a promotion at work and making friends. 

I became increasingly popular during these years and I participated in what many others wanted. I wasn’t around a group of people that worked on personal creative goals. These types was the type that go to work and that’s it. I mean when your’e making 6 figures and a comfortable life in the DMV what can you say? I partied, shopped, ate at lavish restaurants and tried to travel as much as I could. I was deeply miserable and wasting money left and right. 

I could not write a sentence from scratch if I needed to. My creativity was lacking. The same years I went through my creativity surge was the same years I stop worrying about being popular. I remember my phone literally screaming Friday nights with at least 20 people asking me what the hell I’m doing. Now I think maybe 10 people check on me possibly quarterly to see if I’m alive because I’m on my no social media kick. When in reality I’m on reddit, twitter, and here. Just a place that I can hide out and don’t have to live up to any one expectations. 

 Back then, every step was made to ensure my friends, associates, and some random neighbor next door was pleased with me. The years went by and reaching my early thirties the social fauxness of it all was suffocating. Now today, at 38, I know my beauty and youth is here for a little while longer and thank GAWD I am a proud indigenous copper toned woman. I have seen some signs of age especially by my chin and mouth area but hey I’m learning to accept. We all have to accept age if we’re blessed to get to it. I’m more into my wisdom, leaving things behind for my kids, and also dealing with my own issues. Let’s not say we don’t. I have my strengths and my challenges are my issues. 

So now as I grow and self reflect on my own, the men issue has became worse. This guy tonight, mouthed off, “YOU ARE NOBODY,” repeatedly. Like he really believed him chanting that was gonna make me go in my house and say, “I’m nobody”? Wow. Funny. What is funny is this young man tried to break me down because in my scarf, oil stained shirt and baggy jeans I walk around like I’m Queen Me, because I know I am. That is something that has nothing to do with looks or  beauty because self confidence is a strength. 

I hate how 90% of men talk to women.  I’m single and talk to one guy that takes it slow and guess what? He knows how to talk to me. I have a small circle of friends and don’t need to popular. Never liked being popular because I can’t think.  My career will carry without exposing myself. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good bootie shot selfie. I’m a Libra dammit. But with my art, I want to be heard or be distracted by anyone trying to hit on me and not read a damn word I wrote. I take brains for the win.

TL;DR - i finally got an MRI for my ear, which has been fucked up and constantly clogged since september and developed tinnitus in february, and apparently, supposedly, there is nothing wrong with it. so there’s nothing to do about it. so just like with my eye and my skin and my lung and my etc, i have a problem that i can’t do anything about, that i can’t even get the satisfaction of a diagnosis for, and i’m so pissed off about how much time and energy i’ve spent trying to improve things for myself when there was absolutely no point in doing so, that i just want to set my body on fire to really show it what i think of it.

i’m so, so mad. the last couple of months have been almost nothing but wall to wall doctor’s appointments, and with zero exception, they have all been a complete waste of time. it hurts because my body tortures me, of course, but it hurts worse than that because i convinced myself that i HAD to do this, that it was Mature to face my fear of doctors and generally the Right Thing to Do, when i absolutely didn’t want to do any of this at all.

i suffer a lot from an internalized impression of myself as being lazy, defeatist, and dramatic. it comes from a lot of places. i grew up in an environment where i was the only open depression sufferer, under one parent who definitely considered depression to be an antisocial behavioral problem, to be treated like any other shallow cry for attention. i also grew up in an environment full of obvious talents, all of whom would go on to be published, or even public figures, and not to be a complete asshole, but the idea that “you can do anything you put your mind to” is kept alive by people who have the baseline talent necessary to succeed at things they put their minds to. if you subscribe to the idea that success requires nothing other than commitment, then the implication is that all failure is a matter of laziness, petulance, and defeatism--never lack, never inferiority, never ordinariness. on top of all this, my personal interests--horror, sexually graphic media, comics, underground music movements, the usual roundup of morbid or antisocial cultural items--were considered pretty much...well, not very adult. so what i’m coming to is that if i can’t prove my adulthood in any way that has to do with who i am or what i’m capable of, then the very least i can do is Be Responsible. (and of course i get made fun of all the time for being an uptight rule follower but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, LITERALLY WHAT ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO DO)

one of the main ways you can Be Responsible, if you have the means that is, is to look after your health. the world is full of icky, boring, degrading, depersonalizing, and occasionally painful tasks that are necessary to keep the societal cogs turning. if you can’t make art or have ideas or be beautiful or become an athlete or whatever, you can still show that you’re alive and generally hygienic by going to the dmv, voting, showing up for jury selection, or going to the doctor. you can still grasp the final shred of integrity offered to you by doing things no one wants to do, but that we know are necessary for the vitality of self and society. so i’m extra good at doing stuff that people my age frequently shirk--the dentist appointments, the doing your taxes the second the forms come in, etc--because they’re sort of the only things i can do that prove that i’m not, you know, a complete piece of shit.

so this year, at the start of february, i decided i was going to get a real handle on my health. i’d been going to doctors for various things already, of course, even though it was pretty much never satisfying; the only thing i can think of that ever got fixed or explained was the pathological growth of scar tissue over my eyeballs, which required some pretty fucked up surgery. but at this time, i had a lot of problems building up. my left eye developed a small spot, and a constant glare that borders on having double vision. my right ear remained completely stuffed up since i had a cold last fall, and began to ring constantly at the end of the winter. my right lung has felt alarmingly tight and weak for...years actually. the right side of my face is constantly beet red, like i go fresh with somebody’s wife, and i can see how it’s thickening and bending my flesh all out of shape, which rosacea will do progressively and incurably throughout your entire life. i decided that instead of quaking in fear of doctors, and also in fear of wasted time, i was going to straighten my back and go nip this shit in the bud. after all, when you’re miserable but not doing anything about it, people kind of hate you, and then you have THAT problem on top of all your real problems. sometimes you gotta give the people what they want.

so how did it all go?

my skin: since no insurance company considers rosacea a medical problem, which is actually complete fucking bullshit, i decided to take matters into my own hands. i researched what rich people do for their uninsurable problem, and decided to use my recent (traumatic) inheritance to take care of myself. i tried three different preposterously expensive topical treatments that i was told are a “magic bullet” for rosacea, and all of them made my face blow up like a fucking macy’s day balloon. then, after four rounds of extremely expensive, painful and scary laser treatments, i had absolutely no results other than that my face was actually MORE reactive for about a month after the last one. i’m fucked.

my eye: according to my optometrist and ophthalmologist and corneal specialist it’s “just” regular scar tissue from my terrifying surgeries, not the pathological scar tissue that i had to have removed via terrifying surgery and localized chemotherapy. this kind of sucks because it means i can’t just get it removed again, but at least there is a slight chance that my body will reabsorb it like regular scar tissue. (oh yeah? and what’s my luck USUALLY like?) my only “treatment option” is to use eyedrops four times a day, which is actually extremely uncomfortable, and which pretty much means i’m just not allowed to wear makeup ever again.

my lung: after two rounds of clear x-rays and a breathing test that only detected slight asthma, through two GPs and a pulmonologist, nobody has anything to say about why i have this chronic breathing problem. there’s some indication that it might be a “muscular-skeletal problem” that’s putting pressure on the one lung, so i guess i need to add a physical therapist or something to my endless list of specialists.

my ear: two or three trips to urgent care (i forget how many now), two GPs, an ENT, a fucking weird hearing test, and an MRI have done absolutely nothing for me. after a cold with a sinus/ear infection last fall, my right ear remained permanently slammed shut; if i pop it, it closes back up in seconds. i do not have the same problem with the other ear, it is clearly a physical problem. in february, my ear began to ring agonizingly and has not stopped for a second. in all this time, i went through round after round of antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, steroids, etc. nothing works. no one can see any type of problem. apparently i have the option of electing to have a tube surgically inserted into my ear, although i can’t quite figure out what the risk factor is, both for my tinnitus, and for my hearing in general. 

and OF COURSE, depression: part of the stigma against depression is that it’s a choice, somehow. like fresh air and exercise and looking on the bright side are so effective that if you’re depressed, it must be because you LIKE IT THAT WAY, because otherwise you would use these simple and free cures for your so-called illness and it would be all over, right? anyway i kind of hate being depressed, and i’ve been working my fucking ass off trying to deal with it. i see a nutritional therapist (a licensed psychiatrist) who prescribed me a number of nutritional supplements that i do think help, but they are unthinkably hard on my stomach. i tried lexapro, and it made me feel so abnormal, and cut into my general quality of life so badly, that i didn’t keep it up. i tried a generic version of wellbutrin, and it made me violently sick to my stomach, and caused my ringing ear to ring deafeningly for days after a single dose. the brand name version wasn’t much better. then i tried lamictal, and felt totally great AND NORMAL for like a week, and then i got the rare and potentially deadly lamictal rash. sometimes this just indicates a basic allergy, and sometimes it indicates Stevens-Johnson Syndrome which causes something called TOXIC EPIDERMAL NECROLYSIS WHICH REQUIRES LONG TERM HOSPITALIZATION TO GROW YOUR SKIN BACK. i had to deal with this on the day of mandatory final exam presentations in a class where i was already struggling, and this was one of the darkest days i can recently remember. after this, my psychiatrist tried to prescribe me abilify, but after i started to hear about the side effects and personal testimony of certain friends, i decided i couldn’t handle it. very possibly, i just cannot be medicated for depression, unless i’m willing to sacrifice everything else around the depression too. 

...this is all pretty much a retread of an experience i had for a few years, a few years ago, where i was having these abnormal paps, so they constantly had to drill painful core samples out of my cervix to keep checking up on the NOTHING that was going on in there, until one day they were just like...uh your tests are coming back fine now, and we don’t know why they didn’t before, and it just doesn’t matter, you don’t have to do this anymore PLUS you could have just been sitting on your couch jerking off this entire time and it would have done exactly as much good as this cycle of being humiliated and tortured by doctors in a while that leaves you curled up in a ball sobbing every time. i’m still pretty pissed off about it, if you can’t tell.

so like i don’t know why the fuck i’m doing all this. i don’t know why i do anything. nothing fucking comes from even my most herculean effort except a relentless sense of mystery that is starting to border on satire. i don’t know why i have so many problems. i’m 38 years old and i’m in ok shape. i don’t have generalized immune issues or anything. my doctor said i have some of the best lab work she’s ever seen. why the fuck does all this shit happen to me. i’m trying so fucking hard to enjoy my life. it’s hard to be in mental and physical pain all the time, the latter for absolutely no coherent reason. i mean i’d rather have a bunch of random problems than like, lupus or MS or something, for sure, but everything that happens to me is so meaningless and arbitrary, i’m starting to get that feeling like god hates me. it’s also hard to have the constant feeling that so many people think that failure to enjoy life is exclusively a matter of “not trying hard enough”, being a pill, looking for attention. i don’t know what to do anymore. i’m real pissed. i think what i need is a change of philosophy, which will be a long hard road. at least i know it’s the one and only area where i, and only i, have some level of control. wish me luck.

Slim Thick & D.O.P.E.

I barely know where to start with this one… Weight loss has always been a sticky subject for me, especially when it came to my self-image and the perspective I’ve had of myself (but that’s a topic for another week). Looking back on my journey I realize it was a sticky subject because I was self-conscience and unaware of how DOPE I was.

I won’t say weight gain is something that runs in my family, but I have definitely had my struggles with fluctuating weight and not really having any control over losing or gaining throughout my life, it’s always been something that just happens to me and I go with the flow… it is what it is. In 2018 I had consciously decide that wasn’t good enough anymore because I really did not want to accept that getting older indefinitely comes with gaining weight when you don’t take care of your body and respect your temple.

It was easy when I was young. Growing up, “active” was my middle name: I played basketball, touch football in the neighborhood with the guys, dancing, stepping, double dutch, running track, and really anything that kept me outside; if it could be done I wanted to do it. I don’t know how much I weighed before, but after my father passed I went up to 160, I was a little thickums with chubby cheeks.

Once I got into High School and started walking more and dancing I dropped the weight, got a little taller and managed to remain at 145 until I went into college. Like most freshman going into college I gained the freshman 15 (which was really more like the freshman 25), but it looked good on me (looking back now). Even though I had gone over 160, I never realized I had built more muscle and I wasn’t truly fat… even though I thought I was… just a little thick.

After graduating college when all the physical activity stopped is how and when adulting really hit me. Within 2 years after graduating I had made my way up between 185 and 190, which honestly still wasn’t too bad, but I started to feel the weight gain. I was in a stressful work environment and honestly hated my job. I felt like I had wasted 5 years of my life working for a degree to not even use it, I didn’t see a way out of it, and on top of all of that I was back in Richmond where I did not want to be dreaming of living back in the DMV area where I’d be closed to my boyfriend at the time and my friends. There were so many things not going the way I wanted them to, and my body showed that.

I went through a bit of an emotional roller coaster through the summer of 2015 and had dropped down to 175 in an unhealthy way to say the least, but I was happy that I had finally thinned back down a little. Before I knew it, I was on the path to move back to the DMV, still working a janky job but it was bringing in good money and handling everything I needed it to handle so I took the opportunity and went back to where I thought I was happier.

It’s amazing the things you think will fix all your problems… and then you get it and it doesn’t. God will get your life in perspective real quick with those moments.

After moving to Maryland in 2016, I took a rather quick nose-dive and lost control with my cravings and bad eating habits. It was horrible on my pockets and even worse on my body. 2016 was not a friend to me in many ways, and it showed in how I moved day to day. From struggling financially, to losing friends, and fighting to stay on my feet; I didn’t know what was going on. To top it all off I had blown up to 230lbs+.

In 2018 God really showed me that he had more planned for me than what I had been doing for the 2 years prior. Moving in with my sister was the BEST decision I had made after having two less than desirable roommate situations. We’re sisters, so of course, we get on each other’s nerves but I just want to take a second to thank her for all the amazing things she does and how she’s help mold me into the woman I am today.

I have watched her struggle with her weight as well, but I’ve always admired her for how confident and self encouraging she is every step of the way. I’m sure she was going through things that we didn’t always see on the surface level, but most specifically from May of 2018 until today I have watched her change her life around and really push to lose the weight she’s always wanted to lose.

Talk about a D.O.P.E. queen, she not only started on her journey alone she pulled me and one of our roommates into her journey with her. Now, I won’t lie, we haven’t dedicated ourselves to the degree she has but she is definitely my inspiration to keep pushing even when I don’t want to. The greatest tidbit she’s given me since our journey’s started May of 2018 is the dedication to making a lifestyle change and not just “dieting”. We don’t need to diet, we need to be healthy, and my commitment to living that healthier lifestyle was influenced by her.

There aren’t enough words to express how proud I am of my big sister and her milestone of losing 57 lbs and 34.25 inches!!! She is still pushing forward and I know she isn’t stopping anytime soon I just pray I live up to her amazing example of what it is to be a D.O.P.E. black woman and providing support and encouragement to all the other black women in her circle and whom she comes in contact with on a day to day basis. You are truly amazing and all of the hard work you put in does not go to waste. You are a bright light in my life and I’m grateful to have a sister like you to beat up on me and push me to be a better version of myself everyday.

Since May of 2018 I have successfully dropped down to 205 lbs, I’m maintaining my weight loss, and am so excited about my growth and my dedication to living a healthier lifestyle. Next stop, 190! The most important lesson I have taken from this part of my life is loving myself in all forms no matter how “ugly” I may believe I am at any low point I hit. Being D.O.P.E. is becoming a part of my life and I owe that all to the women in my life, like LaToya, that have seen it in me for so long and have been behind me every step of the way since I’ve decided to walk in my truth.

If you’re on a weight loss journey, I’m here to say keep going! Don’t give up when it gets hard, don’t doubt yourself when you don’t notice results, and remember you didn’t gain the weight over night (somebody wise said that to me once). Lean on your support system, but don’t forget to be your own support system and motivation. Figure out what will convince you to keep moving towards your goal and remember you don’t have to do it all alone!

I know my biggest set back when trying to do most anything is doing it alone. The thing about being alone is there’s nobody to put a mask on for. When you fail it’s on you, but failure isn’t a bad thing, it’s just the thing that tells you it doesn’t work that way. Try a new way and next time you may get a different outcome. It’s okay to be afraid of working out alone, but do it anyway. The only person that has to live with your decisions at the end of the day is you… don’t be miserable if you don’t have to be, and don’t give anybody else the power over making yourself happy.

I know I’m not the best role model when it comes to exercise, but be better than me… be more like LaToya. Make yourself go to the gym 100 times… and when you reach that goal, start for the next hundred. Find a nutritionist and a personal trainer, find a gym buddy, plan out your meals, choose to stick to an eating schedule… whatever you need to do, do it NOW.

One of my best friends recently said to me “progress not perfection.”

Any step forward, is a step in the right direction. Don’t let ANYBODY take that from you.

Gonna put a response to this behind a read more because I got rambly but figured “what the heck, post it all.”

Thanks, Indy! There are a few in my counseling group who react like everyone's out to get them and I'm just...we messed up, and there are consequences for that. What gets me is that some are on their 2nd or even 3rd DUI and, as miserable as the last year has been for me (and with as much time as I have left before I can stop paying the piper -- and the county, and the company that provides the interlock device), I don't get how going through this once wasn't enough to teach them. But I don't know their full stories, so I try not to judge them.

The guy at the DMV today wondered aloud whether I could have ignored everything since they got my name wrong on the court paperwork (they used Kenny instead of my legal name, and misspelled my middle name), and the DMV couldn't even find my record based on the court documents (I had to help them by explaining the errors and how my name is in their system).

Plus, you know...once the DMV found my record, the license revocation was indeed there. So even if I had tried to rely on getting off on a technicality, it wouldn't have worked, and I'd have less credibility going forward.

But I figure...we all screw up in life. Not everyone screws up badly enough to land in jail, but to some extent we all play the fool sometimes. The best thing to do is learn from it, move on, and DON'T keep making the same mistakes. Make new ones instead, and then learn from them.

And while some things that happen to us in life are other peoples' fault, this one is squarely on me. Nobody set me up to fail, I just failed. They aren't out to get me, I just have to play by the rules (even if they are so restrictive that my mom made pasta with a garlic wine sauce last night and I'm so paranoid about failing a test that, even though I'm 99% sure all alcohol would have cooked out of it, I'm not taking the chance) and I'll get through it. The worst of it is behind me, even though there's quite a bit to go.

It certainly wouldn't help matters to be a jerk to the parole officers or anyone else charged with making sure I abode by the terms of "not spending another 60 days in jail." It makes the process a lot easier when we don't see each other as adversaries. We laugh and joke, with the understanding that if I screw up, they have no choice but to bring the hammer down. They've always treated me with kindness, even though they literally have to watch me pee so they can be sure I'm not altering the sample or using someone else's.

But as much as I don't want to let myself down again, I don't want to let them down either. The way they congratulated me today, and with one of them last week saying that on my next vacation I "had better go somewhere fun" (for which I would need their permission, so that if I miss a random test due to being out of town it doesn't count as a failed test like it normally would) and saying that he'd give me permission in a heartbeat...I don't think they'd do that if I was being surly with them or failing my random alcohol tests. I wouldn't say we're exactly friends or that we'll be playing on a slow-pitch softball team together when this is all over, but I appreciate that they aren't using their authority to make my life miserable, and I think they appreciate that I don't give them the attitude that I've seen others give them.

I'm still ashamed about having made such a stupid decision. Only one person at work actually knows the real reason I haven’t been driving, because I fear the judgement that I would receive if everyone knew that I had a DUI (on Facebook, where a couple co-workers and I are friends, I just said I was finally back behind the wheel after “losing my transportation” last February). I still have dreams of being in jail, even though I only served a total of 74 hours (I was sentenced to 72 total, but they forgot to release me until a couple hours after my time was up). And I also have 60 days of suspended sentence hanging over me until August -- if I do as much as jaywalk, it could kick in another two months in jail. I really did not enjoy being in there (I know, that's kind of the point -- I was surprised at how some of the inmates just accepted it as their lifestyle, saying that once they got out, they'd be back in jail before long). I'm going to do whatever it takes not to have to go back. Now that I know what it’s like (and this jail is voted one of the nicest in the country -- as miserable as I was there, I can only imagine how bad it would have been in one of the bad ones), the thought of serving time is even more of a deterrent than it was before.

I don't know if "grace" is quite the right word...it's more "ultra-cautious survival mode" combined with "don't be a jerk to people who don't deserve it."

But I'll take the compliment.

I was biking home from work, down a congested section of Jay street, when it occurred to me that I may have outgrown New Found Glory. 

Lyrics like, “Some girls are crazy/Just listen to what I have to say about it,” don’t do much for me anymore. I’m in my 30s. I’m getting married. I care about health care and retirement accounts and CSAs and lowering my “bad” cholesterol. “Remember that time we realized ‘Thriller’ was our favorite song?” seems to be an iffy use of mental energy at best. 

Maybe it was finally time to put a lid on my teenage obsession with emo music and its sub-genres and fully embrace my descent into James Taylor land.

But emo grows up as well.

This past week, I heard albums by Braid, Thursday, and Reggie & The Full Effect that have no reason to be as good as they are. 

Braid’s “No Coast,” finds the technically savvy four piece crafting their most accessible and memorable material to date without ever sounding forced or too old for what they’re trying to accomplish. In fact, it rings with youthful energy and passion and provides a helpful heaping of hope that, as we age, we’ll never lose the wonder and awe of our childhood years.

Thursday’s, “No Devolución,” doesn’t emanate nostalgia the way that “No Coast,” does. However, on their sixth, and possibly final, album, Thursday shows some signs of age. Screams are replaced by melodies, distortion petals give way to delay, what was once aggression now feels like loss. This is not to say that those previous elements are not present, they are, just not as focal. They’re no longer “pulling this canvas from the wall,” they’re instead asking, “am I really there?” It’s only fitting that the final cry of the album is “Stay True.” This is a departure from what once was.

And then there’s Reggie. While Braid rekindled and Thursday questioned, James Dewees went into a full blown second childhood with “No Country for Old Musicians.” Songs about an Aztec warrior in space, Korean revenge films, breakfast, wizards, and the DMV litter this obnoxious masterpiece. But, as the title suggests, even James can’t escape the inevitable march of time. He sings about his “crazy fucking neighbors,” in North Hollywood and how if he “was in better shape, [he’d] run so far away.” His “hip-pop” persona “Floppy Disk-0,” a name so perfect that it literally sounds like what a dad might call himself if he was trying to be cool, yells, “we all can go to hell!” on the track “Who Needs Another Drank?” The line “this car is making me so sick/the kind of sick that only trains provide,” has no business being in a song by anyone under the age of 30. But for all this cynicism, there is something quite lovely about the track “37,” a song about how, on his 37th birthday, monsters invade his room and kidnap him to join their band in the monster universe. He might be approaching 40, but he’s still young enough to sing about monsters.

I cannot ignore the fact that all these albums start with the word, “No.” Thereis an inherent defiance, an unwillingness to settle, a battle against giving up. I listened to emo in high school and college because it spoke to the grand existential questions at that time in my life. It should then come as no surprise then, that for the bands that chose to march forward, that same impulse would compel me to listen today. Hi. Recently i changed my address so i had to let the car insurance company know about that. But they charged(actually are willing to chage) me 423 pounds !! Yes, there's not a misspeling. It's 423 . As far as i ve seen, most people get charged no maximum than 50 pounds for this change. Also, there are no changes on my policy. I still have a garage, i still do the same mileage/year and so on. They even confirmed that there's no change in policy details except the new address. The new address it's in Manchester (central area) and before i lived in Bradford(UK). Now, in the mean time, i had a claim. If i would have found about this fee before, i would have cancel my insurance policy but now that i have a claim, i can't cancel it anymore and being refunded (as i paid the insurance for 1 year in one go, Not monthly). I found about this crazy 423 fee only now when i had this claim. You can't find anything about any fees related to changing the address neither on my policy papers nor on their website and online policy books. I suppose they considered this fee just as an administration fee. And i suppose they could have charged me even 10 000 pounds as an administration fee just because they can. I don't feel protected by the company anymore !! that's why it's an insurance company, to protect and take some risks out. The insurance company it's Admiral. I tryed to talk and explain them that this fee it's just nuts but they didn't agreed. The fee it's about 1/4 of the total insurance cost for 1 year. Maybe they try to take advantage of the fact that i can't cancel it (coz i have a claim in process) and i can't get refunded ? Any ideea how should i proceed ?
