Thought I’d ask about inspiration; aside from things related to your fandom’s source material, is there any visual art (specific style, artist, work) that acts like a wellspring for ideas?

The most obvious and important one regarding my current work is the solarpunk movement over the ten years or so it's existed. I see a lot of vitriol going around about art that offers comfort versus art that challenges; and even overlooking the utterly false dichotomy that a lot of this back-and-forth presents, my assertion with this project and in general life is that sometimes, the single most challenging feeling to sit with is hope.

It can be that way if life has kicked you and you've been miserable for a long time, when it hurts to even imagine things could be different because that comes with the caveat of could have been different. That's hard to reconcile and accept. And I think it's true for more people than are aware of it. I think it can be the hardest, bravest thing in the world to sit with that, to allow yourself to see the better world that could be, and trust the other people around you to see it as well. So that's what I get out of this niche online art movement beyond just pretty pictures of rooftop gardens and inner city canals. It's braided into what I do even when I'm not actively working with these motifs and aesthetics.

Other than that, I'm not very knowledgeable about visual art. It's not something I have any skill for myself and I haven't studied the history of the subject in-depth or anything. I can often grasp the story a piece is trying to communicate and comment on its symbolism, but I'm pretty lost when it comes to singling out styles and movements. I like taking a little inspiration from any art I sit with, though, and I'm bound to remember some special pieces that have stayed with me. I'll edit the post or message you with them as they come to me!

i think we should remind musicians they can absolutely make up little stories for their songs btw. it doesn’t have to be about them at all. you can invent a guy and put him in situations to music. time honoured tradition in fact.

I just think everyone should take a moment to consider the question "what is your visual shorthand for cruelty?" and then follow it up with a critical "and who taught you that?"

specific examples include but are not limited to

why is an evil timeline character design disabled? (why do the heroes go through equally punishing battles and never lose an arm, a leg, an eye?)

why are the futuristic scifi terrorists uniformly darker skinned? (why are the heroes so much lighter?)

why is the greedy boss fat? (why are the heroes skinny?)

why is the criminal mastermind heavily scarred? (why is the brooding, traumatized hero unscathed?)

why is the predatory creep a bearded person in a dress and makeup? (why are none of the heroes trans women?)

who taught you that this is how things are?

how long do you plan on repeating it?

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

"I should draw Māori Miku!" I said to myself. "Just a fun sketch, it shouldn't take me long" I said to myself. Six hours later I come to with this in front of me and a wrist begging for mercy but holy fuck worth it. I love this trend this was so much fun

DISCLAIMERS AND NOTES ETC.... I'm Pākehā, meaning I am not of Māori descent. I hold so much respect for Māori people, for their values and traditions, and for the fierce pride with which kapa haka is performed. I thought if I was going to design a Māori Miku, it makes sense to dress her in a kapa haka kākahu, as her whole thing is singing and dancing!!! The moko kauae is not based off any real person's. I referenced the temporary moko kauae a lot of kapa haka performers wear!! Was tricky finding out whether or not depicting her with a moko kauae was a good idea, so I went the safe route- showing an aspect of Māori culture without stepping over any boundaries!! Brown eyed Miku is everything to me shout out brown eyed Miku.... I referenced like seven different outfits to put hers together!! I really hope this looks accurate or at least passable. Thanks to adorkastock for the pose ref!!

i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.
