Raggedy Andy

As some of you who've been reading for some time know, in addition to stuffed animals, I also repair (and actually make) cloth dolls. This part of the hospital is rather specialized, mostly all cloth dolls, not ones with plastic parts or mobile eyes or hand knitted ones. My specialty is fabric (including faux fur, obviously), and that's the equipment I have. But that does mean I get a lot of Raggedies. Raggedy Anns, Raggedy Annes (the name spelling really matters!) and Raggedy Andys. Today, I thought I'd share a story of a small handmade Raggedy Andy.

Andy had been loved for over twenty years when his person asked her mom to please get him fixed up. He had had a lot of adventures, and clearly some serious accidents! Here are his diagnosis photos:

And this is what he looked like as a young doll:

You can see that he's lost his face, and his clothes. Even his sewn on shoes were wearing off. And he had more injuries to his limbs and torso. You can also see that Andy was custom made... his face and clothing were both different from commercial raggedies, as was his foot shape.

I couldn't match his original jacket fabric, so I recommended his family choose a fabric they'd like and send that to the hospital with him. In addition to new clothes, and a new face, and other wound repair, he was going to get his shoes recovered and supplemental stuffing. Once he was in the hospital, we also agreed to recover the blue part of his hat (as it was quite worn, which is hard to see in the photos.

It took a bit of time, but soon, Andy was feeling more like himself. Here he is with his wounds repaired, new face, new pants, and new shoes:

You can see the torso and arm wounds were repaired, but the face is new. His pants button on, but his shoes (now velour) are sewn in place.

And here's Andy all spiffy in his full new outfit, ready to fly home:

His family wrote when they saw the photos:

Oh my goodness this is fantastic!! He looks amazing. I cannot thank you enough!! I love his new face and his heart is still there. Thank you for salvaging all you could. His outfit is wonderful. Thank you Thank you!!

And when Andy made it home they said:

Andy arrived!!  He looks amazing and just so incredible how he came back to life.  I am so happy and cannot wait to surprise my daughter. 

Amazing and just could cry.  This is her most valued memory from childhood.  Her Andy.

could you review some of the neopets as animals outfits, like the fennec kacheek, red panda vandagyre, and cockatiel pteri? (those are examples, choose whichever you like!) thank you <3

(Note: I included a random selection of outfits in this post, but feel free to send in asks if anyone wants to see a specific outfit I didn't cover.)

I'll be honest, I'm personally not super big on the "outfit that resembles a real-world animal" trend. First, I play Neopets for the cool fantasy creatures; even the most true-to-life Neopets species have some pretty fantastical colors. I feel like making pets just look exactly like actual animals kind of defeats the purpose of them being Neopets. I get why people would like it and I'm not saying it's bad; it's just not my thing.

Also, the other reason I'm not always big on these outfits is that a lot of Neopets have colours that already resemble real animal patterns. Not only do the outfits blur the colour/customization line quite a bit, but usually I like the colour ones much more, as they keep the actual design of the Neopets in place and just change the patterns and colors, rather than covering up the fun fantasy elements. This also helps them avoid the uncanny valley effect, which I talk about more below.

Also I might be over thinking this but who is making these outfits. None of these animals seem to exist in-universe as far as we're aware. what are the shopkeepers basing these off of. the colours at least have a magic as an excuse

Examples that I think are okay:

Feathery Pteri Outfit: This one's nice! I like the layered patterning on the wings and the high-contrast colors. Most, though, I like that this sticks fairly close to the actual pet, mostly just changing up the tail shape. This almost could've been a paintbrush colour, but then again what colour is up in the air.

(Side note: the eye clipping over the beak is a rendering issue? I think?)

Bouncing Zafara: This one definitely strays farther from the actual pet than the Pteri, but it's a fitting animal choice and it doesn't fall into the uncanny valley, which is all I care about. The body is still somewhat recognizable as a Zafara in terms of shape, and the Miamouse as the joey is super cute.

Freshwater Lenny: Kind of the same case as the Zafara; not super one-to-one with the actual pet, but it's still recognizable as a Lenny and isn't too uncanny. The legs are a particularly nice touch, actually changing the pose to look more heron-like (though they are also the part that strays dangerously into being too detailed).

Please don't:

Adorable Kacheek: Sorry to the fans of this one, but this outfit just resides deep within the uncanny valley to me—like it's a mascot suit instead of just a normal pet. The artstyle is way off from Neopets, looking much more Subeta-ish (except Subeta's art usually isn't so off putting). It's not a bad artstyle, mind you, it's just not very Neopets-ish. I also feel like a fennec fox was also a bad pick for this one, as it's basically unrecognizable as a Kacheek at all.

Feathered Eyrie: Speaking of the uncanny valley, this is another pet that lands squarely there due to having entirely too much detail in the shading and weirdly realistic fur textures. It also just doesn't look very good aesthetically—the beak doesn't fit the face, and the wings are an absolute trainwreck (not only is the perspective wrong, but the left wing is coming from the middle of its back!). On the plus side, you'd be hard pressed to not recognize this as an Eyrie, and it's a fantasy creature instead of a regular animal, so I guess that's something?

Furry Meerca: Hmm... no. This one also suffers from an overly-detailed artstyle and way too much realism, which is especially jarring when placed on top of the Meerca's heavily stylized body shape, resulting in a perfectly round animal with hyper-realistic animal eyes. It's also particularly bothersome because we already had a chipmunk Meerca design in the form of the striped Meerca colour, which is just this but less soul-haunting:

Which is what I meant at the beginning when I was talking about colours vs outfits. The colour is a Meerca that looks like a chipmunk; the outfit is a chipmunk that looks like a Meerca. Big difference.

Oh my goodness, thank you, I feel flattered, 😂. I’m the Zach fangirl for sure! I am glad you have such confidence in my ability to help get you out of your art block, and I hope I can help because I actually do have a few ideas! See below the cut 😁!

The first thing I thought of when I saw this ask was your previous Zach art, specifically the pieces where you draw him in different outfits: either alternate outfits he wears in the show or outfits you come up with yourself. You have done such a wonderful job creating these pieces, and it would be amazing to see more like them!

Within the fandom we often see Zach drawn with his regular outfit, his trench coat, and his Count Zachula costume, but we usually don’t see his other outfits (no judgement to the wonderful Zach artists, I love you guys and your Zach art! It’s just an observation!) I particularly think Zach’s fencing outfit and scuba outfit would be a fantastic addition to the Zach fanart world!

I mean his fencing outfit is so cool, the red accents are in all the right places and the V logos are perfect!

And it’s much of the same thing with his scuba outfit. The pockets or panels, or whatever you’d call them, on the sleeves, and the red trim on the sleeves and belt area is just so cool. It’s like stripes which is not something we often see from Zach (except his swimsuit, and I wanna burn that thing 😂).

Another type of outfit I think he’d look great in, and that we don’t see in the show, would be Zach in a suit or vest.

The man owns his own company, he of course has to dress snazzy for board meetings and special events. Therefore…suits, vests, dress pants, ties…would all be apart of his wardrobe for these events. And he’d look so fetching in such outfits, okay 😅…I’ll stop.

Finally another outfit idea/concept would be motorcycle Zach. It’s silly, I know… Don’t ask me why, but I just envision him riding a motorcycle with custom Varmitech riding gear. It’s an unhealthy obsession really, I should not think about motorcycle Zach as much as I do.

And a few other ideas could be Professor Zach, a revamp/redo of his atrocious swim suit, or a screenshot redraw of any of the screenshots I included here or any of your personal favorite Zach screenshots (I can also send you some screenshots for inspiration if you’d like).

I’m unsure if these ideas will help you, but I hope they do, please feel free to ask me for more suggestions if these do not work!

Premise: You don’t have any family left in Baldur’s Gate, so when it comes time to celebrate Midwinter, you invite the family you do have: all of your old companions that can make it. Shadowheart, Gale, Halsin, and a few others join you for a meal and gift exchange.

“My dear, I’m afraid that staring at the clock won’t make our guests arrive any faster.” You turn to see Astarion standing at the doorway to your drawing room, holding a stack of letters. He’s dressed impeccably in his holiday best, even sporting a small red poinsettia in his lapel. Initially, he’d resisted the festive addition, but you reminded him that, while mild, a poinsettia is poisonous. Not a moment later the flower had found its way into his outfit.

You’re also adorned festively, a bright branch of holly weaved into your belt. Dressed to impress and ready to party for the Midwinter celebration, all that’s left are your guests– which aren’t due for another ten minutes. You sigh at Astarion’s words, knowing that he’s right. “How else am I supposed to spend the time?”

Astarion walks over to your seat on the coach and hands you half of the stack of letters. “Well, I figured this might be a fantastic opportunity to make sure we had an accurate headcount. In case we need to ask Gale to conjure any chairs.”

You take the letters gratefully and pat the seat next to you. He sits and you begin to sort through the papers. “Good idea, let’s see…” The first letter is from Alfira. It’s a lovely little letter, thanking you for the invitation, detailing her Midwinter plans with Lakrissa, and ending with a short little poem for the holiday. “Alfira already had plans.”

“Oh good,” Astarion says with a small clap. “I don’t think my poor ears could take yet another rendition of the Twelve Days of Midwinter.” He waves the letter in his hand as he follows up with, “Rolan also already had plans, something about Cal and Lia wanting to travel for the holiday.”

“Maybe we should have done that,” you say to Astarion, filled with more dread at hosting a party for your closest friends than you’ve had fighting any monster.

He knows you don’t really mean it, but agrees anyway. “We still have time to escape! I hear the feywild has some lovely weather.”

“How would we get to the feywild?” you ask, taking a look at the next letter in your stack.

“I don’t know, we’d figure it out,” he responds, before rolling his eyes at the letter he’s holding. “Why did you even invite Volo?”

You shrug, honestly unsure what compelled you. “He seems lonely, I guess?”

“Well, he’s still a yes,” Astarion says, grimacing.

“Good, I suppose.” You wave the letter in your hand at him, before adding, “Dame Aylin and Isobel can’t make it. Something about seeing Midwinter's arrival in each others’ arms.”

“But of course. We could have done the same, you know.” 

Your love gives you a suggestive look, which you smack with your next letter. “Stop tempting me! I know we can do this, and apparently the guests we do have are looking forward to it. Remember, Gale’s immediate yes? He’s even bringing Tara.”

“Do you suppose she requires her own chair?” Astarion asks, tapping his chin with what could only be Shadowheart’s letter, its writing neat and flowing.

“I think I already took her into account for chairs.” You’re positive you had, lest you offend the great Tara. “Is that Shadowheart’s response? Did she send an update?”

Astarion looks down at the letter, as if he'd forgotten that he was holding it. “Let's see. It says, ‘Don't worry, I'm still able to make it. Is it alright if I bring the owlbear? I wasn't able to find someone to watch him.'"

You stare at Astarion who only stares back. You break the silence to ask the question on both of your minds, "Where will we put him?"

"Perhaps Gale can shrink him for the night?"

"Good idea," you say with a nod and move on to the next letter in your stack. It's a short missive from Dammon. An appreciative message, though he already has Midwinter plans as well. “Dammon was a no.”

Your love smirks, giving you a knowing look. “Likely because Karlach couldn’t make it. Still can’t make it I take it?”

“Karlach and Wyll gratefully declined,” you say, holding up their letter. It’s been written quickly, has some scorched edges, and smells deeply of sulfur– truly no mystery as to why they couldn’t make it. “But Halsin said he would be here.”

"Someone, who I think is Withers, just sent back 'no'. Hmm." Astarion looks at the small piece of parchment containing the singular word and holds it up to you. “Why did you invite Withers? Scratch that, how did you invite Withers?”

You simply raise a shoulder in a noncommittal shrug and say, “It felt rude not to invite him.”

He looks at you for a second, as if pondering whether or not it’s worth digging into the ‘how’ when a knock sounds at the door. “Oh, I suppose our first guest has arrived. Would you like to wager on who it might be?”

“Why bother,” you say with a snort, setting aside the rest of the stack and heading to the door. “We both know it’s Gale.”

Astarion laughs at your confident proclamation, and laughs even harder when you open the door to a smiling wizard, dressed in what can only be considered a holiday robe, lit up with faerie lights. Tara stands next to him, proudly wearing a red ribbon.

“Welcome! Come in, come in,” you say, waving him into your house. Once they’ve entered, you give Gale a hearty hug and Tara a small bow, which she seems to appreciate. After you take his coat and they settle in, Astarion serves them both a drink, a wine for Gale, a bowl of broth for Tara.

You spend some time talking and catching up until your next guests arrive with a soft knock. 

At the door is Shadowheart, wearing a markedly less ostentatious holiday outfit, a simple green sweater with silver pants, followed closely by a large owlbear. After a quick bit of magic from Gale, they both make their way inside to warm hugs and their own drinks. 

They’re just about sitting down when another knock comes.

The night continues in much the same fashion as Halsin arrives, then Volo, then Jaheira with several of her children in tow. Then, just when you think no one else will arrive, Minsc shows up with Boo wearing a single jolly bell.

The entire group settles in for drinks, food, and merriment, discussing all that they’ve been up to since you’ve last gotten together. The company is lively, the atmosphere warm, and you’re immensely satisfied with the outcome of your efforts as you finally take a seat next to Astarion. You begin to wonder why you were worried about hosting this at all.

Ahead of the party, you hadn’t received a response from Lae’zel. She was likely too busy in the Astral Plane to respond, so you tried not to think too much of it. However, partway through the night you receive a message from her through a Sending spell: “This is Lae’zel. Apologies, I’m indisposed. I’ve been informed Midwinter is a celebration, so consider this my celebratory message.”

You laugh and send your own message back, “Thank you, Lae’zel. Hope to see you for the next one!”

Astarion smiles at you once you relay the message to the group, squeezing your hand in his. He knew you’d been worried about her despite it all, and knowing that she, too, was alive and safe would finally set your mind at ease. And it did– like something that was missing finally clicked into place and you could just breathe.

You knew that not everyone would be able to make it, and you’re still not confident in your hosting abilities, but somehow, you’re still so very content. Something about sitting in a room with your love, your closest friends, and even Volo, fills you with so much hope for the upcoming spring.

When the group lifts their glasses to cheer for all that you’ve accomplished this year, the trials and tribulations you’ve overcome together, you can’t help but add, “And to the family we’ve made along the way. May we always find our way back to one another!”

The night passes in a haze of joy and love– somehow, by the end of it, you've agreed to host again next year. You can feel Astarion's amusement as he chuckles and holds you close.

You’re so welcome and thank you for this request! I have such a soft spot for the guards in general and some of these characters are among my favourites, so this is a really fun ask for me to write! I hope you’ll enjoy the headcanons, dear!

Who orders takeaway?

While at Nanba, meals are provided for free for all of the guards so takeaway isn’t really a huge thing for these guys, unless it’s their days off. For a lot of his days off, Hitoshi was around to cook for Hajime (and since becoming a guard, Hitoshi just makes meals and freezes them ahead of time for Hajime), so he never really goes the takeaway route. Kiji occasionally does takeaway, but only rarely because Kiji is almost always on some fad diet to help his figure. Samon got really, really obsessed with takeaway for a couple of months and literally ate it for every meal once he moved out of the mountains and is kind of sick of even the idea of it now, meaning that Mitsuru is the one who does it the most. And even then, since Mitsuru loves being around people, it’s more common for him to choose to sit down in a place and eat than to grab takeaway.

Who has the more adventurous love life?

Hajime is a workaholic who doesn’t really have a love life, Samon’s love life is…sad, really, and Kenshirou has eyes only for the Warden at this point in his life. Mitsuru occasionally dates, but it’s mostly just casual fun, meaning that Kiji, with his obsession with online dating and desire for a fantastical, sweep me off my feet romance, combined with his super high standards, has the most dramatic and insane dating life. It also doesn’t help that, being the person he is, when Kiji’s standards are met, he falls hard, and he falls fast and gets almost obsessive about his new partner…for a couple weeks or a couple months at most. Kiji is so that person who will say ‘I love you’ obnoxiously early in the relationship. But those feelings always fade as he starts seeing the person’s flaws and decides they don’t actually live up to his standards so he either ghosts them or dumps them and moves on to the next person.

Who is better at keeping secrets?

Hajime and Kenshirou are both excellent secret keepers. However, because Hajime can come off as scary a little intimidating, he’s not often told people’s secrets. Kenshirou, despite coming off as strict and a little judgmental, often finds himself being a secret keeper for someone and, because he feels it’s only common decency, he wouldn’t dream of telling someone’s secret unless it was needed to prevent danger to that person or someone else.

Who knows every rumor?

Okay, but this is both Mitsuru and Kiji. They are definitely gossip buddies…like, that is a large part of the friendship between those two, just having a meal together and spilling all the drama to each other. Nobody is quite sure how both of them know what they know, but if it’s happening in Nanba, one or both of them will know about it.

Who suggests a movie night?

I definitely feel like this would be a Mitsuru thing but the huge problem with it is that the only person he might have any luck in convincing to join him is Kiji and if Mitsuru has to sit through one more romance movie…it’s just not happening. Not with any of them, not unless it’s ordered to keep their jobs.

Who tries to convince the other to try skydiving?

Again, I feel this is a Mitsuru thing. I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I do think that Mitsuru is someone who would be into extreme sports of various types and skydiving would appeal to him. Kiji wouldn’t go – the outfits they need to wear are simply too atrocious to be on his body. Hajime wouldn’t go because he thinks it’s a waste of his time (honestly, he’s more of a rock-climbing guy anyway). Kenshirou, though he manages it well and doesn’t make it public knowledge, is afraid of heights. Samon, however? He’s willing to give it a try.

Who is the holiday planner?

Again, this is where the duo of Kiji and Mitsuru really comes in wonderfully handy. Both men have a lot of holiday spirit and strong opinions. Mitsuru is definitely the one who comes up with the craziest ideas and gets everyone hyped up for the holiday, as much as he is able, while Kiji actually rather excels at handling all the minutiae.

Who spams the other with memes?

Mitsuru will go through spells where the only way he’ll digitally communicate with others will be gifs and memes. He normally only stops when Momoko beats him up enough for him to realize she’s seriously getting pissed off with his antics and honestly, by that point, everyone else in Nanba prison, including the other men, are thanking her silently for it.

Who has never enough money with them and lets the other pay for things?

Samon’s actually kind of bad at this. Money has never really been a big thing for him. While he does realize it’s essential for life outside of the mountain and he does his best to manage his money well, he is guilty of honestly forgetting to grab money before he heads out. It’s so bad that most of the places located in Nanba have a running tab set up for him.

Who wants to try a classic sleepover?

I do see this as being something Kiji has maybe tried to set up at least a handful of times, because it is really something that would appeal to him. However, everyone else either gave excuses, like being too busy, or in Hajime’s case, just told him to fuck off.

Who answers their phone at 2 am?

Okay, but because of their roles as not only prison guards, but as Supervisor’s of their respective buildings/divisions, every single one of these men are well-trained to answer their phones as quickly as possible, no matter the time of day or night, just in case of an emergency.

Who plays pranks?

This one is kind of an easy answer, just because it’s shown in canon that this is very much something that Mitsuru not only does but loves doing. Hajime tends to be his target more often than not, but the others do get it to some extent as well.

Who initiates dates for the other?

Mitsuru has, either in complete seriousness or just to fuck with them, he’ll never confirm which one, made online dating profiles for each of the other men. He’s definitely shown them the results of those dating profiles which are very…interesting reads. How quickly and how badly the other men reacted varied, but Mitsuru was more than a little beat-up by the time he finished showing them to everyone.

Who is more chaotic?

Mitsuru is Nanba’s true chaotic neutral. Like, yeah, he’ll do his job and he doesn’t really want bad things to happen but overall, his main priorities are to amuse himself and to create a little chaos and fun for everyone around him.

Who has the more bizarre quirks?

Okay, but have you met any of these men? They are all full of bizarre quirks in their own unique ways. Hajime has his super-strength, weak stomach, his hair is super curly when grown out, but baby fine and prone to frizz, so he sports either ramen-head or a blond afro if he doesn’t shave his head every couple of days. Kiji is full of bizarre little quirks, especially verbal ones, and swears his feet will get blisters if he even tries to wear anything without a designer name and a bit of a heel. Mitsuru is nothing but bizarre but his inability to really talk at a normal volume definitely counts. Kenshirou can hear frequencies that normally only dogs can hear and Samon, along with being freakishly strong, is a monkey in all but species.

Who spends the most money on unnecessary things?

Kiji has a love for shopping, especially online shopping, and is so the type who will buy anything on sale, even if the sale only amounts to being something like ten cents off, because he just can’t pass up a bargain. Clothes, make-up, skincare, bath supplies, perfume, and scented candles are really his weaknesses though.

I have a fantastic idea: an Impa Meets AU. If I had the time to do this, I would. But, I am going to shake my idea around in your face because I want to. Somewhat incoherently might I add

So, why would they meet? Some cataclysmic event spanning the timelines wouldn’t necessarily call for any Impa’s help, not on their own anyways.

Here’s where AoC Impa comes in. I haven’t played the game(just the demo a few years ago), but I’ve gathered that her personality is a bit more similar to Lana than to other Impas. I’d wager that after the Calamity was over, she would feel just a bit lost on what to do next. She just so happens to ponder out loud about what her ancestors would’ve done in her shoes with Purah nearby. She instantly gets an amazing idea to use the newly repaired Terrako’s help to see (and maybe even visit 👀) other times in Hyrule.

Since Hyrule Warriors Link’s outfit is something AoC Link can wear in the game, he is likely at least somewhat well known in that time. So that could be the first time the AoC crew visit. This can also just lead to an AoCxHW crossover, but it’s Impa time. So let’s have her get stranded in that time due to ✨hijinks✨

She curses out Terrako’s name in both annoyance and fear. Cause like, she has no idea how to get back to her own time now. Cue HW Impa strolling in and looking at the tantrum-having Sheikah in front of her.

AoC Impa is ecstatic at actually meeting one of her ancestors. But she does also want to go home like, right this instant. So HW Impa helps her out by first trying to figure out where Lana is. From now on I’m referring to AoC Impa as Youngin and HW Impa as Commander.

Youngin gets to meet all of the HW cast, learning about in detail what had happened during that game’s events. She especially stick close to Commader, begging her for advice to share. Commander feels like she’s going to explode the whole time, but tries to answer Youngin’s questions as best as she can. Then, they eventually meet up with Lana(and also Cia I guess idk). Lana offers to help bring Youngin back to her time, but she is now inspired and invigorated. She wants to visit all the other times and other Impas, gaining their wisdom to help out everyone in her own time, to get her Hyrule back on it’s feet as soon as possible and to make it greater than every before! Lana loves her enthusiasm, Commander does not. She acknowledges Youngin’s courage and power, but doesn’t think it’s wise to just send her off to other times on her own.

So now Commander is joining Youngin on her time traveling adventure! Lana makes it so that they’ll be able to freely travel to different set times along the timeline, with magical pocket watches for the both of them. Plus a couple extra, just in case other Impas want to join in on the fun.

The adventure begins! No real stakes, just a fun time. We need more of those imo. Anyways, they would travel to different time and Youngin would be constantly jotting down notes about the places they go to, while Commander has to make sure she doesn’t accidentally fall off of a cliff. A few other Impas would join them, but it’s mostly focused on these two. The most important times they would visit would be the Spirit Tracks and Wind Waker times, which would give Youngin some great ideas on how to help out her kingdom.

Then, nearing the end of the adventure, all the Impas would go back to their own times. Youngin would bring Commander along to her own time, having her meet all of her friends. Commander asks for them to please not time travel, the timeline is already messed up enough lamo. But then they would go see the BoTW time, just to see what had happened, and to thank the Champions for all their help. Then, Youngin would go back to her own time again, waving Commander off as she goes back to her own time. And now, Youngin is determined to make her Hyrule the best version of it that she can make it, with the help of ALL of her friends.

That’s like, the baseline, the gist of it. Hope you enjoyed my little idea, and I hope you have a great rest of your day!

sorry it took me a while to answer this but i wanted to give you a good answer! i am terrible at thinking of thinking of things off the top of my head so i compiled the below over a few days. i'm sure i missed many that i'll kick myself for later, but this is what i got for now! also thank you so much for saying that! I love being thoughtfully critical and analytical of things, especially fashion and clothing which, to me, is function first. that can be boring for some people who want to just like or dislike something, and they're totally valid for that. but i'm glad you enjoy this sort of discussion like I do. it's really fun for me to probe my brain this way so thanks so much for sending this question! (these are in no particular order other than just what popped into my head)

Beyoncé at Beychella

an obvious choice, a recency bias choice, but also there's a reason this pops into your brain (if it does, which makes you correct and hot). While most of the people who remember this experienced this via the livestream that night (if you're like me losing my mind at 2 am) or via the eventual tour movie on netflix, it's still extremely successful because of the distance the camera often sits from the stage. very out of the norm for a filmed concert, where the instinct is to get close ups which make the film worth watching. if i wanted to see full stage views i would just go to the concert. but the reason the camera spends so much time far back and beholding the entire stage is because as much as beyonce is the center of the show, the stage and every single member of her band and dancers were also the center show. it was a full experience from corner to corner, and a major part of what made it so breathtaking was the tour costumes. color blocking isn't anything revolutionary, but it's so rarely employed like this because tour designers fear same-ness and losing the popstar amongst the dancers. but employed in this way, where the venue created audience members at extreme distances, it was a logistical stroke of genius to create a sea of yellow or pink, easy to see and behold from long distances. Also, a fantastic execution of a concept (which i'll probably reiterate several times that a unifying concept is CRUCIAL) that is both theatrical to watch and personal to the artist. Not only featuring the artistry and visual of outfitting her dancers and band/orchestra as HBCU marching band and color guard members, but going as far as to make her own fake sorority, i mean that's just spectacular. Effortlessly cool in it's appearance, while also deeply moving to the HBCU and black community who got to see their artistry and culture proudly displayed by the worlds biggest popstar. doesn't get better than this, in my opinion. Thoughtful, logistically solving problems, and wholly unique to the show and the artist herself. BONUS for her opening costume where she appeared as Queen Nefertiti!!!! all designed custom for her by olivier rousting, of balmain wunderkind fame. TWO DIFFERENT VARIATIONS OF THIS AS WELL

2. Britney Spears - Dream Within A Dream Tour

one of the all time tours in general, in the history of pop tours, and one of the major components was the costumes. Too many to find and show, but that's also what makes it marvelous. An astounding number of costume changes and sets that worked with the costumes in concept. One of which is above, a giant music box that she rises out of dressed as a ballerina in the middle of the show. another being the denim cowboy outfit, complete with chaps and a lucite cowboy hat because the show broke out into rain. it was an indoor traveling show, and yet the entire final song was done in the rain. also, projected onto the rain was a 30 ft tall hologram of britney IN THIS OUTFIT. I highly suggest you check out this tour if you can find it. there is a tour movie and it's probably on youtube somewhere. She also brought out a lot of her music video costumes, including my favorite, the lucky feather trimmed robe which translates phenomenally on stage.

3. Madonna - Confessions tour

another one for the history books, just an incredible run of dozens of costumes all unique to the themes of the songs or chapters of the show. above, she opens the show in a sexy riding outfit with a mane coming off the top of the hat (she got very into being an equestrian in her british era until she had an accident with her horse). you can see in the background a lot of the dancers are also outfitted in riding outfits, all with crops and helmets. you can also see the male dancers who are dressed as like bdsm horses, complete with reigns in their mouth, who she then RIDES on their backs. Only to be followed up by a performance of like a virgin where she performs suggestively on top of a saddle. she runs through 19 songs in full, almost each of them with their own sets including a whole parkour set and finishing off with the final "disco" act. complete with a saturday night fever suit that she and her dancers wear and ending in a roller disco. incredible stuff. we love a strong theme that ties into the theatrics!!

4. Ariana grande - dangerous woman tour

this one is less flashy and showy, but i really love structural costumes. given ari's low center of gravity, they're easy for her to pull off! joking, but also she does minimal dancing and comes from broadway/theater so she can carry more theatrical costumes. and i love when a costume cuts a cool silhouette and transforms the body. having been to this tour, the pink chiffon bow outfit was one of my favorites because of how the loops bounced as she ran around, as if they were little wings. Also, she closed the show (post encore) with an extended dangerous woman, complete with fire on stage and her at the end of the catwalk in this black latex gown. Her black silhouette against all the red/orange was really striking and you can't really see it here, but it dragged all around her and made her look like she was this foreboding black sludge demon. all while going on the most insane vocal runs i've ever heard in my life, completely ad-libbed.

5. Lady Gaga - Monster Ball Tour (original theater run and revamped arena run)

it would not be a complete list without miss gaga herself, the woman who singlehandedly reset what it meant to be a popstar. And it began with this tour, which after Kanye's taylor swift fiacso in 2009, went into hiding and their joint tour that was planned was scrapped. instead, gaga embarked on the monster ball tour, which she threw together in a few weeks i believe. it was a theater only show, so a small stage, but she went all out. and as we all know, her favorite way to devote resources is to pour them into costumes via her haus of gaga team. The costumes on this first leg of the show were whacky, sculptural, and of course, very theatrical, making her a larger than life popstar even on the small stage. The show was revamped after the north american run with europe getting a totally reworked and redesigned show that was upgraded to arenas. super deep little monsters cherish the memories of this brief and wildly creative show. i mean the exoskeleton costume is astounding. there are many more you can look at, and i encourage you to if you have never seen or heard of this brief, first leg. although i did go to both, and i enjoyed the arena tour too and all of it's upgrades. including how she lit her tits and crotch on fire i meeeeaaaannnn. now THATS a tour costume.

Honorable mention - Beyonce Formation tour

the hats truly being one of the most memorable visuals i've seen on a tour in person. i has higher seats for this one, and it was at citi field which is a baseball stadium, notoriously HORRENDOUS for concerts. anyway, from the cheap seats i could even be blown away by the opening of the song, formation, where she and a group of dancers, all donning these exaggerated brimmed hats, marched forward from backstage as the screens parted. they were lit so they were full black silhouettes and you couldn't tell which one was beyonce, on purpose. the opening to the song was extended as they stomped around until they lifted their chins and revealed themselves in the light, to rapturous applause. it was dramatic, but so simple, and a great example how tour costumes don't have to be intricate. sometimes, it's way more effective to play with shape and shadow and drama. My first impression of them: his character design is fantastic, his deck is nice and his voice and personality and everything is very good too <3 a lasting first impression!

When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you've sent me a character I don't like): I loved him from the moment I saw him, and even more with the whole tragic backstory hahaha

How many people I ship them with: Yuma, Ryoga, Astral, probably more if I stop to think about it??

My favorite ship of them: YUMA!! They just look so nice together, how to not love it?

A weird headcanon: he's into astrology and other mystical/spiritual things because of the intricate lore and rituals

When do you think they were at their happiest? when his dad was saved/redeemed

When do you think they were at their lowest? probably when Tron forced him and his brothers to do all those cruel things?

Future headcanon: of course he will do something related to history, probably researching. I imagine he would write books too

What do you think is a secret they have that they never told anyone? ah that's a funny one.. he never needed to come out as gay because his family is open-minded BUT he was scared when he dated a girl briefly (because he wasn't sure how everyone would react XD)

When do you think they acted the most ooc: all the times he acted mean to be honest. Even though it fits him, I feel like those are things that have to be "forced" out of him (since he will not be angry or sad without a very strong reason, for example)

When do you think they were being "themselves" the most? when he's nerding about his passions. I'm so glad we got to see it in the show

The most unnecessary thing they ever did? ugh ok so I guess he really regretted what he did to Astral (episode 49) and then he basically offered himself to Yuma - "unable to replace Astral" his own words. the whole scene is really bittersweet and also bothered me a little (episode 111)

The funniest scene they had? his convo with Yuma in episode 46 was endearing

18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?

ooh, hm, i think i am going to have to go with wayne here actually! i wouldn't necessarily say he gave me trouble, but writing him was a challenge (a good one!!) because he is just a very different character to write than what i'm used to writing. plus like he is SUCH a blank slate kind of character, y'know? like we get, what? two, three scenes with him? and they're short scenes too. and we don't really get to see him interact with anyone besides nancy really. certainly not eddie! (which is still a CRIME!!!!). and like we DO get a few details about him from just those short few scenes, like the way he looks/dresses/speaks (but tbh even then it's still very singular. like it's ONE outfit, it's ONE conversation, it's ONE major event that is dictating his emotions). plus the layout of the trailer and all of the details in the decor inside (but, again, none of this is concretely tied to wayne specifically, yknow? like it could belong to him! or it could belong to eddie! we don't know for sure! but it certainly lends itself to plenty of interpretations and headcanons and such).

all that to say, writing wayne is very much trying to build his character from the ground up. and BECAUSE we get so many of these little crumbs of detail that CAN be applied to him, it's very easy for the fanon interpretations to take hold and for Wayne Lore™️ to start taking root (most of which i absolutely LOVE btw, i have rarely, if ever, seen a bad take on Wayne Lore™️). so it's a balance of taking my own personal Wayne Lore™️ and mashing it with the bits and pieces of fanon Wayne Lore™️ i love, and breathing life into this character in a way that will satisfy me and the readers AND will still fit into the teeny tiny itty bitty little box that the show has carved out for wayne.

not to mention, wayne definitely speaks and thinks differently than the regular ol' characters we know and love from the show. he was raised in a different generation, with a different kind of background so it's about keeping all of that in mind too and trying to make sure that that comes across too. also making sure that he didn't sound like some hokey caricature was a HUGE thing i focused on while writing him, because that is NOT what i wanted AT ALL (and i like to think that i was pretty successful with that!).

BUT i do have to say that even if writing wayne was difficult at times, it was ABSOLUTELY a wonderful challenge that i think helped me grow as a writer for sure, AND i had SUCH a fun time getting in his head and walking in his shoes for a bit. and it was honestly SUCH a rewarding thing too, like the response to my wayne pov fics has been mindblowing and so heartwarming and i am just very very proud of those fics.

so yeah, tldr lmao: wayne was probably the character i had the most "trouble" writing, but that was a fantastic challenge that i absolutely loved taking on.
