celebnews Doctor Who co-stars fuel romance rumours during their photoshoot in Venice. The two have been filming for the past year and a half and during this time the romance rumours have only grown.

During the shoot, the two were pictured in a close moment where Y/n brushed Matt's hair, and then Matt placed his arm over her.

i'm seeing lots of weird takes about the byler kiss. yes, it's a job. no, they won't find it gross because its queer. but yes, it's also an intense thing to do and is not 'no big deal'. it's a big deal, both personally - they've been friends for years - and professionally - it's a climactic huge part of the show, possibly a first of its kind for them too.

the issue is that people still think two male coworkers kissing creates the problem. 'noah is gay, so he dgaf' which is just as silly logic as thinking that all gay men are out to bang every straight dude.

i'm sure straight actors don't automatically feel fine with kissing any costar of theirs just because they are the opposite gender. plenty of straight actors would probably prefer a queer kiss if it was a coworker they liked, respected, understood, and weren't disgusted by on a private level (something that professionalism requires you to deal with silently, but is still a factor - they're human after all), than one with the opposite gender just because theyre straight.

in fact, finn and noah have known each other so long now that i imagine they regard each other as individuals first and foremost rather than 'oh that's a boy i have to kiss.' it would be 'oh, that's noah/finn i have to kiss.'

so no, the byler kiss isn't a big deal in the way many think, but it also isn't blase or flippant or something to be cast aside like 'oh it's just another day'. it's not, and neither is a love scene. they would both require extra prep beforehand, and emotional processing after the fact. but it all comes down to whether or not you think that noah and finn would be personally disgusted, pleased, or nonplussed about kissing each other. them, as people, not them as males.

but most people don't want to discuss this because it gets into foah territory. its a shame that people dont feel comfortable to discuss acting itself without feeling like theyre accidentally shipping the actors. both are fine here, for fun, but on a serious note, we should be able to discuss the creative process for these two maturely.

shes genuinely a really tragic character who had potential for a really compelling, effective arc concerning grief, identity, healing, and finding trust again all while going through the inherent ordeal of being 15 years old….if she werent a female character in a shonen anime 😭😭 instead she gets sidelined during the show up until her big plot twist reveal after which shes immediately sidelined again. whatever i still love her and know her to be a character of all time who has suffered more than jesus. in my experience shes perhaps the female character who like. ive seen most *obsessively* hated due to her “getting in the way” of the ship b/w the male protagonist + deuteragonist (bc of her proximity to the both of them) u woild think shes the devil incarnate and not just. 15 and traumatised 

She had a crush on Nagisa and they kissed and a lot of fans ship him with Karma so theyre mad that Kaede is there. She is super silly and nice but the fandom hates her for standing in the way of karmagisa.

she's a sweet person that was an actor and loves her sister. she is the main love interest of the main character but doesn't interact with him more than most of the other characters for a majority of the story. Often I have seen them removed from the story only to become some homophobic jerk that's desperate for the main characters love instead of letting her keep the good friendship that her and the main character had before the romance.

She's in love with Sherlock, and in fandom she's just considered annoying. Listen, I don't ship them but jesus christ

"ot5" shawols constantly doubting if he even wants a singing career or just wants to be an actor. they need to be freed from this fandom i fear.

onho are very much neglected as a whole from the famdom - i just didn't see it for a long time because i would say that my socials are very much ot5, and i do see a lot from all aspects of the fandom and because flamers and jinggus are particularly vocal and loyal (because of the aforementioend neglect from the fandom).

like you said though, it's got a whole lot better since jinki left sm. though i have seen the random af hate at him from taemin stans in particular calling him old?? idk.

however.....minho is, in my opinion, the most criminally neglected by the fandom. to the point where even iiiii, didn't notice how much the main account didn't post about his activities until flamers pointed it out.

his comeback rollout does seem better than his last, but people have pointed out that his teaser era is shorter than usual?

MY headcanons for like anything morph around a lot depending on what i wanna daydream about in that moment so things get loosey-goosey - i joked about the myriad of AUs i made for the main character of an otome game I drew a lot of fanart for a few years back that I imagine it all like this one map for b3313 i saw years ago

like this HVFGSKDJHFEksafds everythings connect but also not and some are parallel and some are unrelated and some are branching storylines for the same concept while others are like. what if they were in space. i have fun <3

BUT anyway what i was thinking about is like, most of my silly comics kind of have a weird mix of like. imagining a production company that specifies in voice and singing production and also like. old 2009 vocaloid fandom canon where synths know theyre a specifc install of software in a computer and know about the user and all LOL im more of an oldhead than i think i am.......... i missed out on the entire scene from 2018-2020 tho so even tho i love old songs and new songs theres like that two year gap thats always a surprise for me <3

SO like i often imagine all the different engines as like. separate offices or separate office buildings. all mostly in the same district tho. tin pan alley ass situation. THE UTAU building is huge and chaotic with a new addition under construction with openutau, the vocaloid building is like sleek and a bit old fashioned but slowly amping up its to its old glory, some of the smaller engines like voicevox and such i picture as like smaller offices within the same building - so someone like sora whos on both sv and vocaloid i always imagine going between the offices (engines) to do different voicework, someone like rikka runs between voicepeak, sv, and cevio talk all together. shes very busy....

a really old deprecated software like i dunno lalavoice. dectalk. etc also have an office but everyones too scared to visit. they never see people leave or go in but the lights are still on. haunted by perfect paul.

anyway sometimes i also move over into my less meta daydreams so something like the virvox guys who i've gotten kind of attached to, sometimes its fun to imagine them as just normal guys doing voicework in a real office building that just happens to have companies called voicevox synthv and a.i.voice on different floors HFJKDSJHksd i like picturing stories where theyre like underdog voice actors/singers trying to make it big.... its very fun hee hee

actually i like doing that a lot in general. my favourite scenario is a big first concert that almost goes wrong (maybe technical issues) but just barely manages to go through fine and connect the singer with the small audience.. a classic..... can you tell im a love live fan....

OH heres some specific headcanons i tend to lean into relationship wise:

asterian rikka and genbu i like to imagine hanging out a lot as buddies and close co-workers because they were the first three vocal synths i bought and the only three full sv banks i have currently DKJFSJdkfsdakfds like you know how some people talk about like "work-husbands"? genbu is rikka's work-big-brother and asterian is like her work-dad <3 i imagine asterian to be like early 30s ish at most so hes a bit young for work-dad status but i think itd be really funny if he got a worlds best dad mug from her. like. thanks kid. but damn.........

and yeah i have absolutely incorporated your frimomen as rikkas dad headcanon into my worldview its so good dude. i think hed be so wonderfully embarassing <3 and i think itd be funny if he got a mug from rikka that just says like "dad". no worlds best or anything. moon god work-dad is cooler.

genbu's getting a congratulations on turning 3 toddler birthday card from rikka and thats it. i like imagining them as a bit of a shenanigans duo.... like a big brother who tries to be responsible for a second but immediately gets swept up in some bullshit anyway. 20 something bro who enables ur teenage sillyness <3

relationships are a big thing for me I looooooove picturing all kinds of dynamics like friends family romantic etc its so fun. i keep calling the eclipsed sounds starry court the celestial polycule and part of that is because i didnt know what else to call them before i saw the official starry court name but also i do like those three together a lot, romantically, platonically, any which way. saros is very silly in particular. i imagine them like 6 feet tall and full of chaos and solaria and asterian as like a wonderful 5'9

sometimes i think its fun to imagine universes where the starry court dont know theyre synths nor celestial deities and like theyre normal people with secret powers they havent unlocked yet..... i had some daydream a year or two back about asterian in a slightly dystopic future unlocking moon powers by discovering ancient technology in a fallen moon. if that makes sense. i forgot why.... but i think its a fun AU

i tend to focus on a lot of relationships between synths that share software but i also think its fun to think about shared voice providers, like i always imagine sora having like this sisterly bond with the coco sisters despite no blood relation. they are sisters...... sisters forever....

i do wanna start considering unrelated synth relationships more often tho... most of the time obviously i treat miku like shes the biggest synth star because she is HJKFSDHJkdsrfjds so i often picture other synths viewing her as like a celebrity. altho some know her personally like teto or gumi LOL i think theyre BUDDIES they have known eachother for over a decade. OH and im also a mean teto truther. i love her being kind of mean and jaded HJKFDsjds i think shes ultimately softhearted but i like to picture she has a bit of a hard edge

but yeah i really like playing around with these guys!!! they are fun dolls for me <3

In Dear Sigmund good ol’ Sidney tells us rather than shows us the Radar character thesis:

Actually Sigmund, it’s a wonder more people around here don’t take a vacation from reality. Some people even manage to grow - Radar for instance. In so many ways he’s still as innocent and naïve as the local orphans he plays with. And yet this boy keeps this unit, this state of chaos running smoothly. 

The early years establish that pretty well without actually saying it outright. I do find Radar very enjoyable during that period, but he had to be completely re-tooled alongside the rest of the show as of Season 4. The reason for that is Radar and Henry were a package deal, maybe even in a more effective way than Trapper and Hawkeye because the former pair gives you some contrast. The gag with Radar-Henry was that Henry was this privileged, middle-aged dude, a surgeon, and the CO at the 4077th, but he’d run the camp into the ground were it not for Radar, an almost-legal child. The point of that seems very clear to me, this lower-class kid from rural Iowa with nothing but street smarts going for him is far more competent than anyone else in the camp. I love that. Without Radar, Trapper and Hawkeye can’t pull off a lot of their hijinks. Henry can be something of a wild card, in theory he’s on HawkTrap’s side, definitely more than I can say Potter was ever on HawkBeej’s side, but the thing with Henry is he likes to be liked by others, including by the army brass, whereas HawkTrap and Radar don’t give a shit about that. 

That early version of Radar takes a huge hit when Potter rolls in, and we see Radar’s subversive role diminished significantly. Actually if I were a Radar stan I’d be pretty pissed off about that, but usually my annoyance is reserved for the Potter-Klinger relationship. As a class-dynamics stan, I am heartbroken. Think about what we got instead in the mid-late years when it came to class… Rizzo whose class is the butt of the joke 90% of the time, Klinger who gets really into moneymaking schemes for some reason (think about why the only brown character on the show got that as a character beat) and uh… tha’s it. The next person on the ladder might be Hawkeye. Radar is still around until season 8 but they lean really hard into his being “simple” and infantilizing him and he’s no longer this scrappy, street-wise kid, who Charles frequently refers to as a “bumpkin”. I get why Gary Burghoff might’ve started to tire of playing that, he was nearing 40 by the time he left MASH. The early years allowed his character to be much more complicated in my opinion, and tbh, he was funny as fuck back then. 

Radar does get some solid content in 4 - 8. Burghoff is a great actor and he convincingly sells the more dramatic moments like in The Interview, Bug Out, Dear Sigmund, End Run, and Mail Call… Again. I don’t care for the framing of Fallen Idol but I think Burghoff and Alda have good chemistry and it was fun to see some conflict in their relationship. My problem with Radar-centric episodes in that era is they rely on “... and now Radar is all grown up!” as the moral of the story, but that only lasts until the next Radar episode rolls around and he’s a little kid again. I prefer episodes where we get to see him have fun. Your Hit Parade has always been a favourite of mine, I love Radio-DJ Radar. 

Unfortunately I think the moment Radar is truly seen as “grown up” on the show is Goodbye Radar parts 1 and 2, which is embarrassingly late imo. We see that he’s now grown up in a few ways: his role as the backbone of the 4077th has a noticeably different tone – people outwardly express their reliance on him, and Radar himself “takes on” the burden of running the unit rather than it magically falling to him, and he argues with Hawkeye on his level about staying. Before all that stuff about Radar was unsaid, and the one time Sidney does say it its preceded by “this 19-year-old is as childlike as the 4-to-5-year-old local Korean kids”. In Goodbye Radar it’s called out multiple times in the open. The other way we see that Radar has “come of age” is he takes more of an assertive role during his encounter with his love interest, Patty. We see him actually go for what he wants, trying to delay his flight, making the first move to kiss her and being noticeably disgruntled at having to leave her behind. I suppose it happens so late because they couldn’t manage him past that point, which is why he continues to be stagnant until that point.

When he does finally “come of age” it doesn’t land well for me because it’s so sudden. This is the same Radar who 10 episodes ago sought advice from the whole camp on how to talk to a pretty nurse in Hot Lips is Back in Town. I think that was the third or fourth time we saw that plot. I love a coming-of-age story but they need to be gradual for them to be effective, and that’s not easy to do on a episodic show. Really with the exception of Margaret and maybe Charles, I don’t know that any of the characters on MASH have a concrete character arc. I’ve gone back and forth with BJ - I like to see an arc there, but I have no clue how intentional it was. And with Margaret and Charles it might be a bit easier because they start out as antagonists. 

To be clear though, I don’t think “character development” is a surefire sign of a good character or a good show. I think Hawkeye is a fantastic character and he doesn’t develop much. But when the show made the shift to character drama, certain characters suffered a lot. Radar was one of them, Frank was another which is why Linville’s exit makes so much sense to me and he literally said of Frank, “there’s no where else for this character to go”. So that’s it really – I think Radar was a character who couldn’t quite land the leap to the show’s new format, but who was a fan favourite. He shows up less and less throughout season 7 and the excuse we’re given is that he’s “off on R&R”, so you almost get used to him not being there. 

To properly answer your actual question: I think he really worked well as a device in the early years. He buttresses the messaging of the show, he’s on the side of the “anti-regular-army” and – something that I think gets overlooked a lot – he’s fucking horny lmao. He may be virginal but he leers at women, he wants to have sex and go on dates with them, he can be devious and he’s not always automatically on Hawkeye’s side, sometimes he wants something in exchange for his help. It was a very fun vibe. So it was weird for me to see him go from that to this delicate little cherub who is only looking for a pure, lasting love – that was what his character was based around in the character drama years and I don’t care for it. Let Radar fuck tbh. He isn’t 10 years old, he’s 18-19-20. 

There is also this thing I wrote about him that got way more traction than I could’ve imagined. It started out as a meta post but I kinda hit flow with it and just started writing… it’s half-way between meta and prose and it generally sums up my feelings about Radar in a less analytical way that I’ve done here.

all pf them are lonely. like theyve lost friends (or never had any (toya)). spend time online. ichi mostly on miku sites, haru keeps away from idol stuff out of fear so goes to miku instead, toya finds miku one time and is like woah this is cool and not classical and im chatting with other people, and idk rui just seems like a vocaloid fan. they become friends listening to miku and start making music idk

dude. all of them have a persona already. now theyre acting but theyre also acting all the time anyway. maybe not as much for tsukasa at least not intentionally. i haven't read many event stories but at the very least he lost his og goal of making people happy into becoming a star and doesnt remember the plushes in his sekai. the rest are obv qith the personas i think. idk how they meet at the stage. tsukasa looking for an acting spot again. kito gives up on rad weekend cus he never met toya so idk. shizu also succeeds in quitting but idk wants something to do. mafus mom either encourages her to get a job or smth for resumes/ college apps.

animals arent people and most of them lack the ability to express or understand abstract concepts. animals dont understand the silly things people do.

at the same time theres always some odd outlier, an animal with uncanny behaviour or dedication to a craft. service dogs i see all the time, very well trained, many of them seem to pick up on the importance of their jobs, that theyre not JUST doing something theyve been trained to, but that they hold a responsibility, that their loved ones health and safety is in their paws. i see owners speak often about how serious their dogs can get once theyre on the clock. theres the cat in russia who saved an abandoned baby’s life, and her behaviour makes sense within the understanding of animal behaviour, but at the same time. a cat found a human infant abandoned in an alley and kept it warm all night before going to call for help. of course she did, cats are social colony creatures, this was a helpless infant colony member. but still, theres something uncanny about it isnt there?

its dog actors. most dog actors just be chilling. they do a thing, they get a treat. they dont know whats going on. they have no investment in it. but then theres the outliers. i think about jeb a lot, the dog who played the dog in the thing. everyone on set describes him similarly, as almost uncanny, almost too intelligent. people say it seemed like he knew exactly what he was doing, that it wasnt just a trick but that he knew he was performing. how serious he would get when they called action, and like. you can feel it watching the movie. hes a really incredible animal performer. just look at him! hes not licking at peanut butter. watching him stare with deadpan frozen eyes through a window is truly uncanny. it looks like someone shapeshifted into a dog for their performance. how’d he do that. what made him different from other dogs that made him so good at this? is it just training, or did he understand something? feed off his trainer’s energy? hes a dog. he doesnt understand whats going on. so why did he do such a good job? what makes a dog a better performer than another dog?
