prompt --- meeting in prison au (maybe Anakin is serving a few years for crossing the line in defense of his mom and Obi-Wan is a volunteer teacher/lawyer?)
[this is in response to a prompt game i reblogged a year ago, but hey! wanted some dark obi-wan this evening so i'm finally getting around to it!] [warnings for hints of non-con typical for a prison trope fic where one is a pretty boy, also for dub-con and power imbalance] [obi-wan is another prisoner here] [supposedly] [2k]
It’s not actually something one asks here, which comes as a surprise to Anakin. He’d thought—well, he’d always assumed that was just something you traded in prison, like deathsticks and dirty holos maybe. Information, what are you in for.
Anakin had been worried that first night in his cell, mind shuffling through a cascade of concerns and memories and landing on one that seemed inconsequential, stacked as it was against the other contents of his life, but gripped him with a fear he hadn’t felt since he was small. What would he say, when they asked him what he was in for?
Massacre is what’s written on the record. It’s some variation of the truth as well, though Anakin can’t even remember his own crime. Just the sting of the sand, the heat of the dying day, the blood on his hands. Mostly true, though Anakin thinks of it still as justice. Vengeance. The reality of bartering on Tatooine. A life for a life. A village for a mother.
He could say massacre. As far as crimes go, it’s one that carries weight, could earn him a certain amount of respect among his fellow criminals.
But then they would ask him how he did it. He isn’t necessarily small, but he’s hardly a man. Nineteen years old and lanky with it. His master used to assure him that he would grow sturdier with age, grow into his frame.
His master hadn’t even looked at him once during the trial. It had been the security guards on Coruscant who had cut his braid.
So his fellow criminals would ask how he did it, how he killed an entire village of Tuskens when he is nothing but a nineteen year old boy.
And he would have nothing to say. Because being a Jedi…even just a Jedi padawan, even just a failed, ex-Jedi…it would attract too much attention. Too much of the wrong sort of attention. After all, the Jedi Order was probably responsible for half the prison sentences of the criminals here, and Anakin doesn’t think that any criminal would be able to just set that aside. Even if Anakin had barely had a hand in any sort of galactic-wide justice.
Even if the Jedi Order and Anakin don’t exactly agree on what justice is.
So he’d been afraid, that first night in his cell. Afraid and made powerless by the Force suppression cuffs locked tight around each wrist. Afraid that they would ask, that others would find out that he used to be a Jedi and punish him for it. Beat him as if they could beat their captors through him.
But no one asked.
Apparently, information like that isn’t shared or bartered. No one actually seemed that interested. And no one asked that first day. Not that first week. Oh, Anakin was told sometimes what other people did, how they came to be here, the length of their sentence. But only by the criminal themselves. There were rumors he heard about others, sometimes. That was all.
It eases some of the fear he feels that first week, that no one calls him as a Jedi, that no one seems to care about his past.
And with that fear taken care of, he has room to realize something else.
He’s pretty—and those in his cellblock have taken to noticing.
It’s nothing much at first. Lingering stares on his face, his lips, during mealtime. Lingering stares during the communal sonics. Out in the rec rooms. In the yards. He has no cellmate, at least, an empty bunk on top of him at night.
Thank the Force for small mercies.
Lingering stares turn into loud whispers that make Anakin want to scream. Perhaps the Force suppression bracelets smother his connection with the Force, but they do little to dim his Force-gifted hearing. It’s indecent. It’s skin crawling, what they say.
It’s also incredibly useful. Surprisingly so.
“Don’t know why I gotta respect some sleemo’s claim,” he hears from across the yards as he bends down to put the weights he’d been using back on their rack. “Man’s not even in the block and the boy’s mouth’s made for it.”
“You don’t have to,” someone else says in response as Anakin forces himself to keep his shoulders relaxed and low. He feels like prey. A piece of meat, ready for the taking. “That’s your grave dug though. It’s not just any sleemo. It’s fucking Sol who’s got his name on him.”
“Fucking Sol,” the guy repeats with angry passion. “Been here two months and he thinks he owns the place.”
Two months. Where was Anakin two months ago? On Coruscant. At the beginning of his trial. Realizing too late that he’d done something he would not be able to undo.
“--cut off a guy’s arm with a sharpened piece of plastoid,” the other man is saying when Anakin tunes back in. “Cause he was fucking bored. He can own this shithole all he wants. I’m not getting on the wrong side of him. Even for a round at Skywalker’s ass.”
Anakin beats a hasty retreat from the yards after that, though he can’t help but turn the new information over in his head.
He’d been wondering when the heated stares from the other prisoners would turn into attempts to—touch him. It’d been growing as a fear in the back of his mind. Without the Force, his defenses were shot. He was strong and well-muscled, but some of his fellow prisoners could almost certainly hold him down.
But apparently—they won’t.
Because someone else—some mysterious prisoner, Sol—already has first dibs.
The thought makes Anakin shiver, and it keeps him up for half the night.
“You’re up rather late,” a voice murmurs through the cell wall a few hours into his restless pacing. The sound jolts Anakin into sudden stillness. “Oh, no, please don’t stop on my account, darling,” the voice says.
Anakin blinks. That’s a Coruscanti accent, though the prison is located in the middle of nowhere on the edge of the mid-rim. “What do you want?” he snaps automatically, arms crossing as he stares at the wall in front of him. On edge. Prey. Powerless.
“To talk,” the man says. “Obviously.”
Anakin’s eyes narrow of their own accord and he steps closer. “No one’s been in that cell before,” he states. “You’re new.”
“Oh, well done, you,” the man replies in a tone Anakin can’t decide is grating or pleasing. “You’re an observant one, aren’t you, Anakin?”
“How did you know my name?”
“Darling, the whole prison knows your name, I’m sure,” the man says with a chuckle that makes Anakin’s skin dimple. Fear? “Though I would hazard to say I know a little bit more than they do.”
“What do you mean.”
“Your past, darling. Your Jedi roots.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Anakin snaps, even as his heart rate picks up. Jedi. He hasn’t heard that word in ages. He never wanted to hear it again. This man knows. This man knows.
Danger. Danger.
“I can hear your pulse from here, Anakin,” the man says, sounding calm. Sounding amused. Anakin blinks at the wall in front of him. Danger. Danger.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he says again.
“Hm,” the man says. “You’re afraid, I take it. Of others finding out.”
Anakin pinches his lips together, quiet. Silent.
“No need for that though,” the man says, as if this is a conversation between two friends—not one of Anakin’s worst nightmares brought to life. “You are under my protection.”
The words make Anakin’s stomach drop. “Sol.”
“To some,” the man—Sol—agrees. “I’d rather like it if you called me Obi-Wan though. Obi-Wan Kenobi. For now at least.”
Anakin sneers though the other man can’t see it. His heart races even faster now. Sol—one of the most dangerous men in the prison, if not the most dangerous one. Sol—the man whose name carries enough weight that he was able to claim Anakin as his own—what, bitch? What, plaything?---even from another block of the prison.
Sol, who somehow managed to get transferred between blocks, to the cell right next to Anakin’s own.
Who wants Anakin.
For what?
“What do you want from me?” Anakin whispers. He clears his throat, tries again, louder this time and more insistent. “What do you want from me?” “I do think that is for me to know, darling, and for you to find out,” Sol—Kenobi—replies, tone light. Amused still. “But we can start with the simplest thing. Tomorrow morning, during our recreational hour in the yard, I would like you to come to me.”
“No kriffing way—”
“So you would like them to know of your past, darling? I’m sure I could forget myself. I’m sure I could…renege my claim rather easily. If you would prefer a more…brutal touch. Touches.”
Anakin’s skin crawls. The meaning and the threat in Kenobi’s words is clear. Either Anakin does as he is told or the other man will take away the protection currently keeping Anakin unmolested. And he’ll tell the others that Anakin was a Jedi. How many would jump at the chance to fuck a Jedi?
It’s not an option. It’s not a future Anakin would survive. He knows this.
But can he really—submit himself to another man, to this man? This dangerous, cruel man?
“I don’t know anything about you,” he says roughly. “I don’t…”
“You will learn,” Kenobi says, dark promise coloring his words. “I will be beneath the chromometer. Tomorrow in the yard. You will come to me then.”
“Do you wish for me to crawl?” Anakin snarls, anger and powerlessness raging through him. His fist hits the wall between him and his executioner. It changes nothing.
“Did I ask you to?” Kenobi snaps back, voice sharp as a blade. A moment passes. Another. The man lets out a breath and then says, “I do not want a dog, Anakin.”
“Then what do you want?” Anakin asks again, voice breaking under the weight of it all. He has always hated traps. He has always hated being powerless. Imprisoned.
Kenobi is silent as he appears to mull over the question. “I want an apprentice.”
Anakin has no idea what to say to that, and so he says nothing. Kenobi too is quiet. He remains so for the rest of the night.
In the morning, when Anakin is released from his cell after a sleepless night, he looks automatically to his left, but the door to Kenobi’s cell stays shut with no indication that there’s anyone in there.
He comforts himself with the thought that perhaps he imagined the whole affair up until the moment he is led into the yards during the morning rec hour.
It is immediately and painfully obvious which of the prisoners is Obi-Wan Kenobi. Sol. Even without the instructions that he’d been given, Anakin thinks he would be able to pick out the other man, just from how the others treat him.
Sol stands alone, back against the far side’s prison wall, ankles crossed and a deathstick in his hand. No one gets within several meters of him, giving him a wide berth. Out of respect? Fear? Both?
Anakin swallows.
This is not the man he thought he’d be when he was younger. This is not who he wanted to become.
But somehow he is here. Somehow this is the man he has become. Somehow, after a decade of freedom, he has been found by a new master.
Sol’s eyes flash golden in the weak sunlight as he watches Anakin approach him slowly. He tilts his face to examine him, to look at Anakin examining him in turn. His beard is neat and well-kept, as red as his rather long coppery hair. His smile is crooked when Anakin stops in front of him. He’s shorter than Anakin. It feels like a hollow victory, especially when the man plucks his death stick from his mouth and places it between Anakin’s lips.
“Good boy,” Obi-Wan purrs and Anakin feels a roar of emotions roar up in him at the words. Sickness. Hatred. Anger.
And strangely, out of place and unexpected, a thrill of excitement.

it’s really interesting seeing how people are apparently looking at anakin’s rejection to the title of master through his view point. they hate the council for denying him what they—and he—believes is his right. he wants the title without the work. it is already well established that he is an incredibly violate individual. he is consistently scolded and reminded by obi-wan that he does not heed the jedi way, most often when he breaks the rules for his own self-interest. he does not have the emotional maturity, nor the self-restraint literally every person on the jedi council has, to be a proficient jedi master. he wants it, sure, but he has done nothing to earn it. yes, he’s won battles. yes, he has been an immense advantage to the republic. however, physical strength, power and victories in battle do not make someone more deserving for the title. his reaction to being denied shows just how unready he would be. it was exactly why they denied him the title in the first place. no, the jedi didn’t hate him. no, they weren’t out to get him. they were, rightfully, worried and skeptical because of his very explicit attachments to those around him, his recklessness. let’s not this whole thing was a ploy by palpatine to simply alienate anakin even more. instead of getting upset at the jedi council for rightfully not making anakin a jedi master, let’s remember they’re not his enemy. they’re his comrades. they’ve fought beside him, they try to teach him. i would think the man who horrifically groomed anakin, isolated him and used his genuine fears and extreme traumas as a way to serve his own agenda would be seen as the enemy. but, every time i look at a post relating to anakin and the jedi council, they’re the enemies. they denied him. they’re evil. they were holding him back. it’s just very odd.

"Bo-Katan isn't mean" Okay because I'm so tired of hearing this:
[/mēn/] adjective: unkind, spiteful, or unfair. vicious or aggressive in behaviour. Not mean? Okay definitely not vicious or aggressive in behavior Like her first appearance where she's part of Death Watch, a terrorist group and slaps Ahsoka's ass without consent to demean her?
Tumblr media
Or when she shoves Ahsoka to the ground and *laughs* in a tent where Death Watch (including Bo-Katan) has stolen women from the local village on Carlac and put them into forced servitude?
Tumblr media
OR when she helps slaughter the village and burn down said village for asking Death Watch to leave them alone? (that's her on top of the roof)?
Tumblr media
Or after when she tried to kill Ahsoka and Lux for trying to help the villagers and leave?
Tumblr media
Or when she aided in a plot to cause intentional destruction and fear to manipulate the people of Mandalore into deposing her own sister and overturn Satine's very successful government that ended the clan wars (the Traditionalists then were given the lush moon of Concordia and their own political agency and government in which Pre Vizsla was the governor)? Then forcefully deposed Satine at gunpoint after she had abdicated because of the will of the people who no longer accepted her rule due to the manipulation of public perception by Death Watch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Bo-Katan was likely traumatized by the Mandalorian Civil War/Clan Wars at a young age and there's no solid canon evidence but It's widely believed by fans that Bo-Katan was groomed and/or radicalized by Pre into DW from a young age--even if you believe this, IT DOES NOT EXCUSE HER HORRIFIC ACTIONS. None of it justifies her wrongdoing. She still had agency.
Okay so what about unkind or unfair?
Surely that can't apply to her sarcastic comment to Ahsoka when approaching her after she had watched her struggle on Kessel and made no move to assister her, only watching her to use her to fight back against Maul and reclaim Mandalore. While she does respect and befriend Ahsoka by the end of the Siege, she still initially saw her as someone to be used for her agenda.
Tumblr media
Or when she uses Obi-Wan's guilt over his relationship with Satine to convince him to aid her forces in retaking Mandalore, which Republic intervention would disintegrate treaties over a hundred years old and start another war on top of the ongoing Clone Wars. Which to her was a legitimate, even desperate method to reclaim her planet from Maul who was only serving his own agenda, but it wasn't a very nice way to do it. In some ways Bo-Katan is justified in how she is mean, but it doesn't make her not mean.
Tumblr media
Then there's her anger towards Sabine after she discovering what the Duchess does and that Sabine created it (after hearing how guilt ridden she is and how she already destroyed it.) Was her anger valid, oh yeah. Was it kind and and fair? No.
Tumblr media
What about in The Mandalorian you ask? She's not a literal terrorist anymore in the Mandalorian. She's surely not still spiteful or unkind. Definitely not when she insulted Din's religious beliefs and way of life and called the COTW a cult.
Tumblr media
Or when she took credit for killing that one guy's brother without any remorse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or when she changed the terms of her agreement with Din and forced him into helping her by withholding the agreed upon information after Din upheld his side of the deal. Which was her plan all along. And then on top of that, mocks him by using his own mantra.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there's the disdainful opinion she has of Din and her own superiority.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only agreeing to help Din save his kid when he has something to offer her to serve her own agenda. Which again, valid but not something she does out of the kindness of her heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh and then she's so direct and straightforward to Boba, not mean at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then in season 3 when Din shows up to help her reclaim Mandalore the first thing she does is take out her anger on him and once again insult his religion/COTW and invalidate his belief that the Mines will restore his place in his religion. All unnecessary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
TO BE EXTREMELY CLEAR: I'm not discrediting Bo-Katan's personal progress into a better person or when she does do good--a hero even by the end of Mando season 3--that's the whole point of a redemption arc, you have to be redeemed from something. And at her core is a commitment to Mandalore, but you can't ignore the cruelty and ego and dare I say it meanness that has gone with it, that's the beauty of her complexity is that she can be a character that grows and evolves and becomes honorable and also still be bitchy. Bo-Katan doesn't have to be morally squeaky clean or a victim to enjoy her character and her sometimes ruthless determination for Mandalore or appreciate her compassionate aspects and letting go of her ego. She's not an easily consumable or morally black and white character. This is in fact, what I love about her.
Thank you @armoralor for assistance with the screenshots from The Mandalorian!

TPM
The phantom menace movie is so important not just because of Palpatine´s conspirations but because it shows exactly what were the systemic failures that allowed for Palpatine to get so much power, it´s very important for the plot of the prequels even if it wasn´t appreciated at the time.
Queen Amidala appeals to the laws of the republic to help free her world from an illegal invasion and the only answer she gets is that they will discuss it in a comitte because they are not even sure she is telling the truth while at the same time the Federation is putting her people in camps. This leads to her accepting Palpatine´s counsel to nominate him to become Chancellor and use what little power she has on the Senate as a Planetary leader to call for a vote of no confidence on Valorum, who was actually the only one who helped her by sending the Jedi because he was totally unable to help her in his own arena of the Senate. He only could help her going behind the system not using the system.
The Senate could have chosen to listen to Padme and help Naboo, they didn´t, it was a mid rim world of little importance to core worlds so their problems were added to the agenda for when they could have time.
Fans forget Anakin wasn´t in canon the only one who criticized the republican system, Queen Amidala goes back to her planet telling Palpatine she hopes he can do something to bring back sense into the republic because it was failing.
This is central to the plot.
This scene is connected to Anakin being rejected by the Jedi Order not because he wasn´t skilled enough or because there was something bad with his character, it was because of his age and because he worried about his mother, a slave living in a world run by slavers with a bomb inside her body that could go off at any point in time.
Anakin´s fears for his mother were not irrational, they were logical and understable, the Jedi could have still rejected Anakin and help free his mother if only in thanks for services done in favor of the Order by giving asylum to a Jedi Master during one of his missions if doing the right thing wasn´t enough motivation.
The Jedi Order choose to ignore Shmi´s situation and accept Anakin only after he showed the magnitude of his skills in the force, not because of the good he did for Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and Naboo without expecting anything back, Anakin did it because it was the right thing to do but this clearly wasn´t the reason why he was accepted as a Jedi, bad beggining for a difficult training with a child who was a former slave with the scars to show it and then the Council agreed to send him to someone without any previous experience as a master, as a favor for a knight and in honor of one of their fallen comrades not because he was the best possible teacher for a future Jedi.
Neither Anakin or Shmi fate were of importance to the Jedi which also lead to them allowing Palpatine to tutor Anakin since he was a child, because what does it matter? Anakin is the outsider, he needs to fit himself into the Jedi Order´s mold, not the other way around.
Would they have been so careless with other padawans of their order, letting them be teached by a politician who pressured them to allow confidencial contact with them? or this kind of negligence was just part of Anakin´s particular situation?, I hope for the good of those padawans this isn´t the case with them and even if it isn´t, they are still treating Anakin differently, just in a negative manner.
Those two plot points are the direct link to ROTS but they are often ignored by the fandom, a shame because this is point a that leads to point b and c, AOTC and ROTS.
The fight, the battle of the fates, was fought in TMP and the Republic and the Jedi Order lost it, they just didn´t realize it at the time.

Sometimes we get onto the idea of Obi Wan being attached(tm) to Anakin. Him just not killing Anakin is the usual suspect. There's also the way his grief held him down for ten years in the show. That was fun.
My personal pet agenda is the various conversations in tcw Obi Wan and Anakin have about the general idea of padawans who leave the order. They take on a weird tone at times. Especially that one in the deleted utapau arc. To be harsh: Obi Wan doesn't quite say it directly, but arguably conveys the vibe that leaving the Order would be wrong and disappointing.
Which is not good, in my opinion!
I don't think this (which you can take as an interpretation, it's been a while since I've actually watched the scenes now) is some sort of deliberate manipulation on his part. I suspect that he's fallen into a common pitfall of parents and teachers: wanting too much for your child or student to succeed. This is what makes attachment(tm) a culprit. He made a promise to Qui Gon. He made a commitment to Anakin. He took a risk by insisting on his training. And on top of all that, he really likes having Anakin around. It's easy to think that he just wanted what was best for him. What a happy coincidence that what's best for Anakin has also become necessary to his own sense of self and what makes him happy. Right?
(I really did find the vibe of their tcw conversations about these things off)
But that's just the cartoon. In the movie- Well, in the movie, he mostly just makes a comment about Anakin's crush (which was just a crush at the time) and later is aware he's two-timing him with Padme (sorry, couldn't resist), but just sort of decides to not talk about it with him because everyone is happier that way. We know he made an important promise, and we know he was happiest with Anakin by his side.
So not so much. But it meshes well enough, for him to have avoided the idea of having to let Anakin go, for him to not take the path he was training him for.
One last thing: this is barely relevant. I mean it's an interesting character detail, for sure. It's a layer to their relationship that's fun to think about. But it's unnecessary, in a way. For one thing, Anakin did want to be a jedi- he wanted more, and he was conflicted about things, but Obi Wan maybe being a little bit clingy about this one thing wasn't the reason for him sticking around. He had his own reasons too. Secondly, while they might have been more honest with each other if Anakin had decided to leave the Order to be openly married and start a family… Palpatine would still exist, and would still want to take him as an apprentice. Anakin would still have issues of his own that would drive him to fall.
So this interpretation probably doesn't change the outcome. It's just for fun.

ok I'll bite. what are your thoughts on stewjoni biology?
Been waiting for a time when my frustration at the use of this trope (more than the existence of the trope) built up enough to be brave enough to answer. The usual disclaimer applies: people can write what they want. I'm not an anti. This is not a moral debate. People can have whatever kinks they want in fic. It's just my observations on how I'm seeing queer characters written in Star Wars fandom and how gender roles is being put into things based on what parts people have. Which, I thought we were not doing that anymore?
For the uninitiated, Stewjoni biology is a fanon concept where Obi-Wan is dual sex (he has a penis and a vagina and associated internal workings). The concept on it's own is fine. It's Star Wars! There is probably all kinds of biology and coming up with something for a planet with like, zero lore cause it was made up on the fly by George Lucas is creative! However. It's the execution and sameness of this concept that has started to uh, get under my skin.
So, I have a lot of thoughts on this, and they are two-fold and related. I think, likely without meaning to do so consciously, people are starting to assign personality traits to certain genitalia, and, in larger ways (due to other trends in Star Wars fandom) are re-inventing gender roles under the guise of queerness (which is, you know, kind of the opposite of the point of queerness!) Most fics I see with this concept (I said most, not all) simply ... have it there. There's not really an exploration of it so much from an intersex and/or trans point of view. How does this impact Obi-Wan's love life? Does it at all? How does it impact his life generally? What are his thoughts on his gender? Are dual sex people discriminated against in any way? I'm sure that is in some fics! But a lot of the time it pretty much goes down to "oh look he has a cunt!" Which I mean, that's not a mortal sin! I just think there could be things that are explored with it that aren't being explored. It's largely there to simply be another place for Obi-Wan to be penetrated.
The second, and likely more controversial part of my thought process, is that I find it. Kind of odd that it's Obi-Wan in particular this has been assigned to. Obi-Wan has what society might consider as more "feminine" traits. He's kind and he's patient and he prefers diplomacy over fighting. Now, this is not inherent to women, but society (and socialization) assigns these traits to women. So, I see a fic. It has this dual sex trope. Said dual sex trope LARGELY focuses on the fact that Obi-Wan, has a vagina. These fics are usually smut fics. Obi-Wan is usually a submissive in them (the conflation of "prefers to bottom" with submissive is a whole other rant and so is my Obi-Wan is sexually versatile agenda). Usually the other characters are, most of the time, a bit Super Masculine. The Super Masculine Man has a penis. The Less Masculine Man, Obi-Wan has a penis too but that's in the background. The focus is on the vagina. So it comes across as These Traits Are Assigned to These Genitals. It comes across as gender roles 2.0. The "feminine" one is the one who's submissive and has the genitals that are associated with cis women. He's the one who "takes it" as I've seen it phrased one too many times. Dirty talk in fic is fine! But the constant emphasis on that kind of phrasing in this situation has kind of off-putting implications as far as writing queer men goes, and kind of has some accidental misogyny in it to boot.
I will express again, these are deeply my opinions. No one who does this is bad or wrong and I have fic writers whose work I enjoy that use this trope. I just think that sometimes fandom picks A Thing To Do and then doesn't do it differently from each other, or take a step back and be like, huh, maybe we could examine this. I think it's one of those things that started off interesting and got flat over time. I'd love to see this concept explored! I'd love to see more trans Obi-Wan stuff! I just am not a fan of how this concept has been executed.

The Game Of Chess - Grim Kennet vs Darth Sidious
"She had to be careful around the chessmaster, if she was to play against him in his game."
Tumblr media
One of the biggest motifs when it comes to Grim and Palpatine's dynamic is the fact that everything is a game of chess between them. The two of them hardly fight in actual combat. They only have a total of three fight scenes in all of The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim.
Instead most of their rivalry takes place over a battle of wits — a battle of the mind. Both Grim and Palpatine are aware of everything that is happening. They are the only ones who know. That's what makes them so dangerous to each other.
Tumblr media
The most interesting aspect of this game of chess between Kennet and Palpatine is the fact that they are on somewhat equal footing. Whereas everyone else is a piece in the game — Grim is not one of these pieces. She is an opponent who is playing against Palpatine. She is not in the game. She is playing it. Everyone else is caught in the crossfire. Everyone else is just another part of it. Another pawn. Grim is outside of it. Just like Palpatine.
Even though Grim is outside of the game — Sidious does treat her like she is a part of it. To him she is just another pawn. In a way she still is. In the same sense that Palpatine is part of it from Grim's view of things. He is the "king" of the enemy side. If she defeats the "king" — then she wins the game.
Sidious is both king and chessmaster. The vital piece needed to be defeated to win — and then mastermind behind it all. He orchestrated The Clone Wars. He plays both sides. He is behind every moment, always in the shadows and watching. Waiting. Biding his time to strike. But to sell the illusion of his role as the Chancellor he too becomes a piece in his own game. He becomes the "king".
Grim also has two roles in the game of chess. She is the second player — Palpatine's opponent — and she is another pawn. She is still trapped in the game while being outside of it. She is someone else to be discarded to bring the game closer to an end, while also being aware of all that takes place. She is no master in this game. She is trapped and she is lost. She is new to this game playing against an expert but she is still playing it. In chess if a pawn gets to the end of the board then it becomes a queen — the strongest piece. This too is Grim. It takes time, she is a pawn for most of The Clone Wars. But as it draws to a close she has crossed the other side and has become the "queen".
Tumblr media
As more than just pieces — as players of the game — Grim and Palpatine have a different look and insight on the other people around them. They are all pieces in the game — unwitting pawns caught between a Sith Lord and Jedi Padawan.
Sidious's outlook on this is far more insidious, all of these people are only pieces in which to further his ascent to power as Emperor. Even powerful characters such as Dooku are ultimately nothing more than pawns to him to further his agenda.
However, with Grim when she treats other people as pawns — or really any other piece in the game — it isn't as consciously. With her being from another universe where Star Wars was only fictional there is a part of her that sees the other people around her as characters still. Even once she has accepted that they are real there is a part of her mind that looks at them and sees nothing but the characters they once were. Because of that this part of her mind treats them like they are and they become pieces in her game against Palpatine. Even people she admires such as Obi-Wan get caught in this trap. She tries to use them in the same way she would write a fix-it AU with them. Except instead of being characters she can write they are people who have their own minds and wills of their own. Even with Grim's noble intentions in stopping Order 66, she too manipulates others to try and fulfill her goal.
Tumblr media
Some of the final chapters in The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim are the most obvious examples of the chess motif between Grim and Palpatine. Part IV of the story, also named "The Storm" has four chess-themed chapter title names. Chapter 32: "The Game Of Chess", Chapter 33: "The Endgame", Chapter 34: "Check", and Chapter 35: "Checkmate". Each of these chapters depicts the ending of the game between Grim and Palpatine.
Chapter 32: The Game Of Chess is the last Grim vs. Palpatine focused chapter in the story. In this chapter Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Grim Kennet have finally reached Chancellor Palpatine to rescue him from General Grievous and Count Dooku. While Kenobi and Skywalker fight Dooku, Kennet is left on her own with Palpatine. Both of them know what is happening, this is everything they have been working up to throughout The Clone Wars. It is the end. It's been unspoken this entire time that they've been playing this game against each other. Even now they don't have to say anything. They simply know. Unable to do anything they merely talk — trying to manipulate each other. They are now both chessmasters on opposing sides. It is still Palpatine's game but Grim has changed the rules.
Chapter 33: The Endgame — this chapter follows the final section of The Battle Over Courscant and the escape from The Invisible Hand. Grim has planned for this moment to be where she can achieve victory over Sidious. Where the end of the game started in the previous chapter it's in full swing here. And if Grim moves her pieces accordingly she can bring about the end of Darth Sidious and The Clone Wars. However, she ultimately fails. Setting in motion the next chapter.
Chapter 34: Check — The end is at hand. Grim could not defeat Palpatine. She is beginning to accept her defeat. She is now in "check". If she doesn't do anything soon then she will lose. Sidious escaped her attempt. Now she is as trapped as she has ever been. If she can't escape—
Chapter 35: Checkmate — Game over. This is the chapter where everything is lost. Although there are five more chapters left in the story they only deal with the fallout of what happens here. Grim wasn't able to escape. She wasn't able to turn the tables against Palpatine. She wasn't able to rearrange the pieces on the board. There is nothing left for her to do. Both Grim and Palpatine know the game has ended. They both know Sidious has won. Their game of chess is over — for now.
Tumblr media
In the end Grim and Palpatine are two people playing a game of chess. Both use and manipulate other people around them as if they are only pieces in the game they are playing. They are outside of it while taking their own roles. The chessmaster and king. The opponent and the pawn who becomes a queen. Two sides in the same game.

HEAVENLY LIGHT ━ obi-wan kenobi ✩
Time is the most precious commodity to humanity. A luxury item that people would fool themselves into thinking the rich could afford and the poor could lose. The power of one second was enough to destroy and shape all those who lived across the galaxy. The future was inevitable, just as a single choice could shift everything from a tranquil peace to a raging war.  Catalea Adonis knew what time had done to her fate. Born into a life of privilege, the young woman grew from a sweet, innocent child to a silver tongue woman with poise and grace. Her power as one of the members of House Adonis gives her a strength she hadn't known existed within her until now. As the next chosen heir to her planet's regal throne, Catalea must face the reality of her own past to create a better future. How a single decision could lead her down a path of destruction and to a man who holds her salvation in the palm of his hand. Obi-Wan Kenobi had never known anything other than the Jedi Code. Remembering small bits of his childhood as a force-sensitive padawan, the young man tried his luck as an impressionable young Jedi in a galaxy filled with darkness. As he began to climb the ranks, each decision he made became a catalyst that turned him from a naïve knight to a war-torn general. Leaving his inner tranquility as a man ready to face his demons in tatters, shattered by the pain of others. Determined to save the light, his journey leads him to Baethea, where his absolution would be disrupted by a young queen looking to rewrite history. The restless need for a life of balance for both Catalea and Obi-Wan had begun to fade with time as those of greed surrounded the republic. Obi-Wan's gripping fear of failure followed him as he fought for a golden age of peace. While Catalea tackles the extreme laws that cripple the galaxy's republic and seep into her own planet. Desperate for a way to break free from the agenda of the separatists, Catalea takes a risk on a timeless enemy that has left her planet's system paralyzed over the many millennia. In a cruel twist of fate that time had already predestined, the queen and her Jedi are thrust into the makings of a ruthless war. A war that would ultimately change the course of history and their lives in the process. Obi-Wan would lose the one he calls his brother, and Catalea would lose an ally, not even the stars, that no one could predict. They would feel the dark side's power as it played the ultimate hand in snuffing out the light.

Obikin Ao3 Rec List
So this is a huge list. It’s mostly Anakin centric so some of it is just platonic Obikin, and some of it is no romance at all.
As usual, if it doesn’t say not complete then its complete and if it doesn’t have pairings next to it then it’s either romantic or platonic Obikin. Please read the tags once you click on the fic, you too would have given up with warnings once you see the amount of fics on this list.

Ok i'll bite, tell me more about the superhero AU please? (I need to know how you're doing the clones without them being clones or related to Jango)
I know this has been in my inbox for a few days now Anon, and for that I'm sorry! Just had a lot of stuff come up that I had to finish before I devoted attention to this ask.
But oooh boy, what a can of worms you've opened up! I'll keep it under a cut because it's gonna get long.
Ok so, the premise for the Superhero AU is a simple one: It's a modern world AU where the Jedi are people (and sometimes creatures) with superhuman abilities bestowed upon them by an unknown entity known simply as the Force.
They live and train at a monastery, and are raised on core values that are designed specifically so that their powers are put to use for the betterment and safety of man kind, instead of being misused for personal gain or chaos. Basically the Jedi are Jedi, even in this world. They just also have regular lives outside of the monastery so that they are more connected with the people they're meant to protect.
(Examples: Obi-wan works as a science teacher at the high school Ahsoka and Barriss are studying at, Mace is an acclaimed actor at a theater, Plo Koon is an archeologist that collaborates with the local museum, Anakin is just starting Uni, etc...)
They're the guardians of their quaint little planet, and it's their sole duty to defend it from villainous intentions. Something that doesn't really appeal to recently appoint Mayor Palpatine, who has a world domination agenda he'd very much like to get on with.
He needs to get rid of the Jedi but he doesn't really have powers of his own. Just a lot of money, connections and political favour. He does, however, also have something else: Access to an otherworldly being that possesses a massive amount of power.
In this world Jango Fett is essentially the equivalent of Superman gone bad. He belongs to a now extinct species of humanoids who had extraordinary abilities that allowed for them to adapt to any kind of environment (making them into great terraformers and warriors, which inevitably got them into a lot of conflict with other alien species and caused a terrible war that destroyed their planet), and who was sent out in a pod as a baby to escape the end of days in his homeworld.
He was found and raised by Jaster Mereel, living a pretty calm existence for the first 12 years of his life. But, as he began to slowly develop his powers, it became apparent that being raised outside of his native planet lead to these abilities never really stabilizing, essentially turning Jango into a conglomerate of all kinds of insane powers that many of Jaster's less morally sound acquaintances wanted to exploit for their own gain.
Things quickly went sour after that. Despite his best attempts to protect his son, Jaster was brutally murdered in front of Jango, and the young boy ended up imprisoned and brutally tortured for several years to "break his spirit" so that his captors could then control him. Unfortunately for them, Jango being subjected to the worst possible treatment and then forced to witness all kinds of corrupt and morally bankrupt behaviors had the opposite effect of what they wanted.
Disgusted with how vile humanity could be, an enraged Jango Fett annihilated his captors and vowed to destroy both those who'd wronged him, as well as wipe out the entire planet (and himself by proxy). And he nearly succeeded, had it not been for the Jedi managing to subdue and trapped him in stasis in collaboration with several nations.
For years Jango Fett has been kept in stasis. Mostly because the Jedi do not agree on killing him, and the military hasn't figured out a way to do it (aside from being nearly indestructible his healing factor is far too strong) that wouldn't also risk causing a ecological catastrophe. And now that Palpatine is in power and has the military in his pockets, he has access to Jango. He isn't foolish enough to wake him up of course, but he does still very much want all of Jango's powers under his control.
So begins a military project that is designed specifically to harness and control abilities that could rival even the Jedi's own connection to the Force. Perhaps even be used to destroy them.
The first iteration of the project (which has Lama Su as the head chief) does indeed involve cloning. But rather than the refined Kaminoan level of cloning that exists in the SW universe, what happens in this world is a little different.
Boba and Omega are the only clones that end up being created, but they age at a normal pace and their powers come well after puberty. They are thus deemed as a failure and a waste of time, and relegated for testing and studying as they slowly grow up in a lab.
The second iteration of the project (with Hemlock in command of it) is much more successful. It involves extracting Jango's DNA, distilling it, and basically creating a concoction of sorts contained within a spherical glowing capsule, that can give people powers if they were to consume it.
The initial tests were conducted on animals and were seemingly successful. Common household pets and pests such as dogs, cats, rats, insects, etc, having become highly dangerous and unusually intelligent beasts (these creatures were subsequently stored for later military use).
It was after the initial testing was conducted that Hemlock's assistant (Emerie) decided she didn't feel comfortable bestowing Palpatine with powers he clearly shouldn't be trusted with, and tried to pull the plug on the project... With disastrous effect. Several crates full of the capsules ended up falling into the river adjacent to the military research facility, and they were carried out towards the unsuspecting city.
And this is where things get interesting...
In this world, the clones are not clones (aside from Boba and Omega as stated previously). They aren't even related to Jango Fett. They're regular men, women (and even children) who were just living their own lives before coming across "strange glowing orbs" that exploded on contact after being poked or messed with.
Rex Lawquane only just moved to the big city from his home in the country side, after getting a sports scholarship. He's striving out on his own for the first time after practically living his whole life with his mom (Suu), dad (Cut) and two younger siblings (Shaeeah and Jek).
He's also only just figured out he's trans, and is both coming to terms with reinventing himself, and trying to figure out how to earn enough money to transition (as well as how to break it to his parents, when he's so far away and sending a letter saying 'Hey ma and pa guess what? I'm actually a guy!' doesn't really feel that great to him). Luckily he has his uncle Nicodemus (99) and his little cousins the 16 year old quintuplets Henry (Hevy), Christopher (Cutup), Felix (Fives), Ezequiel (Echo) and Donald (Droidbait) to rely on when he's feeling a little down.
Cody and his father Alphonse (Alpha-17) live in a little cul-de-sac in the outskirts of the city where everyone treats each other like family (to the point where Cody, Bly, Wolffe, Ponds and Fox who all live within the same community call each other 'brothers'), and run a small shop in the city that's barely making rent.
They live fairly simple lives, but overall don't want for more. Even if sometimes Cody and his childhood friends wished their lives were a little more exciting than the stagnant routine they have been stuck with since graduation.
Jesse is a Uni dropout who has taken up several jobs to provide for himself and his two brothers, Kix and Casey (Hardcase), the former having just started medical school and the latter having been struggling in school.
They're not in a great financial situation, and sometimes get into spats over the littlest of things, but they make do with what they have and would move mountains for each other if they could.
Tucker (Tup) and Matthew (Dogma) are 12 year old twins with a very difficult home life. Their older brother (Slick) ran away from home a while back to get away from their abusive father (Krell), and both they and their mother have been in witness protection for a couple of weeks due to Krell's involvement with the mafia and threats of violence against his wife and children.
Things aren't great and the twins don't have many friends, but they do their best to help their mom run her bakery when they're not in school. Both wish they were strong enough to protect her from their monster of a dad.
Hunter, Tech, Wrecker and Crosshair (yep their names haven't changed in this because they named themselves) have just grown out of the foster care system, and are trying to make better lives for themselves after being put through the grinder several times before.
Living in a crappy apartment in a shady part of town run by a rather strict and opportunistic landlady (Cid), the four 'brothers' earn what little they can through acts of petty crime like burglaries and pick pocketing. Deep down all four of them have dreams of better more honest lives, however...
As you can see, very few of them have any connection to each other. Rex is related to 99 and Domino Squad, and is the son of Cut and Suu, but doesn't personally know Cody or the other Commanders like in the regular SW universe. CF99 are fending for themselves and have no connection whatsoever to any of the other characters. Not even Cody. If anything a lot of them have only ever seen each other on the bus, or at the park, in a shop, or at the mall once or twice.
The range of ages between them also varies greatly, with Tup and Dogma being the youngest at 12, Domino Squad and Hardcase being 16, Rex, Jesse and Kix being 19, etc...
Which leads us to the orbs and their effect.
Because, even if the clones aren't clones in this world, their lives aren't just about to take a turn because they suddenly have powers. No. To better assimilate these abilities and not risking a rejection event, their DNA is also altered to the point where their appearance changes to be near identical to Jango Fett's (or as close as possible, with some of them retaining eye color, hair color, birthmarks, ailments, etc).
How each of them finds one of the orbs varies just as much as their life's circumstances. But the results are all the same. The orbs explode (splashing them with the concoction) and over the next couple of days everyone who was afflicted begins to show strange symptoms of some "unknown illness".
It starts with aches and sores which escalate into extreme fevers. Then their appearance begins to change. The afflicted are taken to doctors all around the city, but no one knows what's going on. And then one night everything takes a turn for the worst...
The orbs weren't perfect at replicating all of Jango's powers at once. They could only bestow one or two powers to whomever took the concoction, and even then there was no way to predict what power someone might get. So, all at once, the afflicted suddenly found themselves with powers they could not control at all. Some more catastrophic in nature than others...
Here are several examples of just how bad that night went:
Rex ends up destroying the apartment building he lives in when his new size-shifting abilities cause him to grow gigantic.
Cody bursts into flames in the middle of his and his dad's shop, not only consuming the entire building but also catching fire to several more as he runs down the street in a terrified panic.
Jesse's strength quadruples and he begins to break things without meaning to. Terrified he might hurt his brothers, he smashes through several walls in an attempt to run away from them.
Hardcase literally explodes, taking out an entire block in the process. He ends up unconscious in a crater of his own creation afterwards.
Kix begins to absorb electricity and causes a blackout, further throwing the city into chaos.
Dogma transforms into a kaiju and runs rampant out of sheer terror.
The entire city is plunged into chaos in such a rapid sequence of events, that the Jedi don't have time to react. The military however had been monitoring where the orbs ended up, and had been observing the afflicted after they'd accidentally activated them. They'd merely been bidding their time so they could swoop in and capture everyone who had come into contact with one of the orbs.
Several lives are upturned, with several innocent people left grappling with their new circumstances.
An identity crisis and sudden fear of their newfound capabilities, is something that Palpatine very easily exploits to keep his new army in line. Because all of these unfortunate men and women surely have families and friends that they care for, right? They wouldn't want them to suffer if they stepped out of line, right?
His superhuman troopers might not want to destroy the Jedi, but they don't really have much of a choice. Palpatine isn't giving them one. That said, to take out the Jedi there's still a lot of preparations to be made. Such as making this new group of heroes more appealing and trustworthy to the general masses. And not all of their powers are great for PR (a kaiju and someone who explodes sure don't inspire trust).
But hey, Palpatine worked in theater before becoming a politician. He can work with what he's got. If some of them can't play the part of hero, they can certainly play the villain.
I have had a lot of time to think about this AU and once again it's another 'Palpatine plays 4D chess with everyone and the clones are well aware he's a villain but don't have much of a choice in the matter and regretfully go along with his plans because they're trapped' scenario. But it's a fun one that involves them still trying to make names for themselves and figure out their own identities, with a healthy dose of 'oh god what's happened to me' thrown into the mix.
The blorbos must be put through the horrors to later surpass them and come out of the ordeal stronger and more confident!
Or maybe I'm just insane.

Echoes of Anakin's own hitched sobs as he said words he hadn't wanted to say hang in the air, toxic and suffocating. They were like seeds that settled beneath Obi-Wan's ribs and sprouted into greedy, carnivorous vines. Before the lyra's taunts, they'd been suffering together. They'd been united. One. And in that moment--when Anakin voiced those words--their agendas split into two separate cords winding like nooses around each other's necks.
Can i ask you about this bit from the last 5PE chapter? This is talking about about the moment Anakin was made to call Obi-Wan a slut. I don't quite understand in what way their agendas split from before. Could you please explain to me what you meant? I'm sure this is a me issue that things are flying over my head. Love the fic but take as much time with yourself as you need. <3
(Literally anyone is allowed to ask me anything about 5PE at any time 😭❤️ I know I have pending asks from like 500 years ago, but I swear, this kind of thing makes me so happy, and I will probably drop everything to answer. And if I ever don't, it's because my brain isn't braining, not because the ask isn't sending me to cloud nine 🥰)
I don't think it's a you issue or that things are flying over your head! I aim for subtlety a lot, which carries the risk of people not understanding, and this was definitely a part that I worried was too subtle. 😅 Anyway, in order to explain it, I'm gonna pull the excerpt from chapter 6 (with some parts bolded for emphasis):
“Tell him that he’s made for this,” the Iyra growls. “Tell him he’s a slut. That he’s good, so good, a better slut than you.” Anakin's cheeks burn. Though his face is strained and covered in slime, Obi-Wan locks eyes with him. “Don’t say that,” he whispers, somehow so calm. “It's not worth it. Don’t you dare say that.” But Anakin can finally admit it. He can finally succumb. Being a Jedi has been one hell of a dream, one podrace of a dream with its twists and its spins and its turns and the wind whipping through his hair and such a boyish thrill to be alive that explosions and malfunctions and murders are all worth it—but dreams are just dreams, and he was forever born a slave.  “Tell him, skug.” Droplets of the creature’s slime rain on Obi-Wan’s forehead, and both of their hands are cuffed, so no one can wipe it off. "Tell him before I get angry. Tell him while I'm letting him breathe." As he stares at the tentacle tightening around his former master's neck, Anakin’s fists tremble uselessly. “You’re made for this,” he whispers in Obi-Wan’s direction. "You—you're a slut." Obi-Wan’s face falls. “Tell him he’s a better whore than you.” Tears trail down Anakin's cheeks, clearing paths of sweat and grime. Obi-Wan is shaking his head. Don't, he mouths with slime-soaked lips, but they’re words, just words, and what does it matter if he says them? “You’re a better whore than me,” Anakin chokes.
In the beginning of the fic and in plain view of Obi-wan, Anakin draws a lot of comfort from fighting their attackers and resisting as much as he can. This chapter 6 scene is the first time Anakin ever submits to one of the attackers ("'You're a better whore than me,'"' Anakin chokes" and "'You're made for this,' he whispers in Obi-Wan's direction. 'You—you're a slut.'"). This hurts him mentally for a couple reasons. For one, it makes him feel trapped in the role of a submissive slave ("he was forever born a slave"). For two, these words clearly matter to him — but in order to be able to say them, he has to lie to himself and claim that they don't matter ("they're words, just words, and what does it matter if he says them?"). This causes him some pretty significant cognitive dissonance.
To a great extent, Obi-Wan recognizes that Anakin will hurt himself if he says these words. And Obi-Wan would rather be choked and slapped and assaulted than allow the Iyra to cause Anakin this psychological injury ("'Don't say that,' [Obi-Wan] whispers, somehow so calm. 'It's not worth it. Don't you dare say that.'" and "Obi-Wan is shaking his head. Don't, he mouths with slime-soaked lips").
So much of this fic is about the choices Obi-Wan and Anakin make for themselves in a situation that restricts their agency — and also about the conflict between those choices. In chapter 6, Obi-Wan's choice is that he doesn't want Anakin to say the words, even if it means being physically hurt. Anakin's choice is that he doesn't want Obi-Wan to be physically hurt, even if it means saying the words.* So, when Anakin makes his choice, Obi-Wan is disappointed and upset and maybe even a little betrayed ("Obi-Wan's face falls").
*It can definitely be argued that Anakin has no choice because the Iyra might kill Obi-Wan, but iirc the two of them acknowledge somewhere that no customer will actually kill them because it will make the owner mad. So Anakin knows the Iyra's threats to kill Obi-Wan are total bluffs. Which means Anakin's decision to say the words is a choice.
In the chapter 10 excerpt from your ask, Anakin is reflecting on the conflict in chapter 6 and its outcome.
Before the lyra's taunts, they'd been suffering together. They'd been united. One.
Prior to the Iyra's assault, Obi-Wan and Anakin reach a resolution on the subject of whether Obi-Wan will allow Anakin to be raped. At this point, their choices are no longer conflicting, and they become a united front. It becomes the two of them versus their attackers.
And in that moment—when Anakin voiced those words—their agendas split into two separate cords winding like nooses around each other's necks.
When Anakin calls Obi-Wan a slut and a whore (despite Obi-Wan's request for him not to), their choices go into conflict again ("their agendas split"). They lose their united front, and it becomes the two of them versus each other instead ("two separate cords"). This — the fact that they're no longer on the same side and that their agency is being restricted not only by the situation, but also by each other — inflicts a feeling of utter hopelessness on them both ("winding like nooses around each other's necks").
This is why Obi-Wan admits he was upset when Anakin called him a whore. Not because he thinks Anakin meant it (he knows Anakin did not), but rather because Anakin chose to go against Obi-Wan's wishes. However, Obi-Wan doesn't blame Anakin because Obi-Wan understands that (1) he was doing the exact same thing by protecting Anakin from rape; and (2) Anakin was in an impossible situation with the Iyra and had very few choices to begin with.
Anyway, thank you so so so very much for the ask! 😍 Hopefully this all makes sense and answers your question!
Sidenote that, while these were my intentions with the scenes, ultimately I leave things subtle because I want people to feel like they can have their own interpretations! The more meaning that can be gleaned from a story, even if unintended, the more rich a story becomes imo.

Hades as Anakin's dad would be great too because Shmi would never be allowed to stay dead (Anakin's rage fits, Anakin saying "FINE, I'LL JUST LIVE HERE THEN" as he stomps off over Persephone's favorite plants and tries to kidnap Cerberus because Obi-Wan would like him and just ruins the Elysium vibe with his scowling and teenage refusal to bathe regularly).
(kit pushing her own agenda of no ask is ever irrelevant because every au can just be re-tagged and linked two months later)
in a percy jackson au where anakin is hades' kid and obi-wan is his mentor figure who got him to camp half-blood, anakin would absolutely not take any sort of news about shmi dying in a good way. it would have to be a little different from the percy jackson books, as this au is built on anakin starting out somewhere in the desert in nevada and obi-wan (a minor minor minor demi-god) accidentally being tasked with taking him to camp half-blood on long island, so he wouldn't necessarily see shmi die right in front of him
but i feel that also leaves us open for like. shmi being taken when anakin is 19 in a beautiful mix of canon and au, and it's by a different more nefarious bad guy and obi-wan, who is getting way too old for this, has to hold him back and try to reason with him because his first defense against tragedy like this is not 'ok i'll bitch but play by your rules' it's 'ok let's see how fast the world burns until you return my mom'
obi-wan has not gotten paid for this once since he picked up a hitch-hiking 9 year old boy ten years ago and he's still not getting paid for it. also cerberus, who anakin keeps bringing up to the surface world because he thinks obi-wan is an animal person, keeps slobbering over literally everything.

This is probably the most inflammatory thing I've said in a while, but
Something really bothers me about the insistence that Deaton is a benevolent force of good, when the proof is that he is helpful to Scott.
And he is helpful to Scott. Just like Peter can be helpful to Derek. The problem with both of those is that, generally, they are ONLY helpful to Scott and Derek, and always have plans and schemes of their own.
Scott had no choice in who his emissary was. He didn't know WHAT an emissary was. Deaton positioned himself nicely there. He showed Stiles how to use mountain ash and then was like "actually, nevermind."
Does this mean Deaton is an evil sleaze? No. But that doesn't mean he's aboveboard. He lies and manipulates, he just happens to favour Scott.
As I write this out, I think it's the insinuation that Derek is just an untrusting asshole and not someone who is more attuned to recognising an adult man who is pushing a teenage boy to do things that maybe he wouldn't do normally. IE, the mountain ash thing at the end of Season 2. It didn't help in the fight against the kanima. It didn't even kill Gerard! It just... was a shitty thing that happened.
I know people say that it's fanon that Deaton had any involvement in that, but uh. Scott didn't pull mountain ash out of his ass and distill it into pill form.
Sadly, I think that moment + the true alpha thing happening in quick succession kind of made us divide into different camps, and now we're fighting the same war forever, but I think there's wiggle room here.
Deaton isn't evil but he isn't a paragon of virtue. Scott is lionhearted but self-righteous. Derek is slow to trust, but once he does trust, he's loyal. No one on this show is perfect.
I will, however, always support Derek Hale's wrongs.
you are so right.
fandom tends to divide it self into these all or nothing dichotomies that does such a disservice to the story and characters.
the whole scott versus derek debate should've been left behind in season 2. season 3 spent so much goddamn time on them moving past it. the entire episode of frayed was dedicated to the scott and derek relationship, you know.
derek wasn't even like mad about scott becoming an alpha either. scott merely wasn't his alpha just like he was never scott's but they had accepted that by that point. if anything derek was proud of scott.
besides scott becoming a true alpha and derek giving up his alpha status to save his sister was them both being at different places in their character arcs but also when you look at the hows and whys of it all they both were manipulated into it. for different reasons.
peter and deaton mirror and foil each other in interesting ways.
deaton is such a fascinating character and a prime example of doyalist versus watsonian perspectives.
he is so enigmatic in-verse because he was used mostly for exposition and lore drops by the writers but in turn this made the character very reserved, careful and calculating. he keeps his own counsel.
early in season 1 stiles is jealous of derek acting like scott's "yoda" but all the while deaton slips into the position of being scott's mentor. he becomes the obi-wan without either derek or stiles noticing. deaton definitely shares old ben's "from a certain point of view" philosophy.
i know people have been weird about deaton over the years in unpleasant and let's be real here racist ways which is unfortunate and dumb. he isn't evil. he just has his own motivations and agenda which is a good thing because characters are flat and boring otherwise. like yeah it's frustrating that deaton didn't tell derek he was talia's emissary but wow look at that character conflict, look at the added depth to deaton and to the lore in one decision.
i really am looking forward to my rewatch so i can dissect his character and pay more attention to him because i have thoughts about him and his sister marin.
i think one of my favorite things about deaton is that he chose scott to be the chosen one in a way. look at currents when deaton tells scott what a true alpha is.
deaton: it's rare-- it's something that doesn't happen within a hundred years. but, every once in a while, a beta can become an alpha without having to steal or take that power. they call it a true alpha. it's one that rises purely on the strength of character, by virtue, by sheer force of will. scott: ...you knew this would happen. deaton: i believed. from the moment I knew you were bitten, i believed.
and i love the contrast to marin saying in alpha pack:
"and I sent her to do what I've always done-- maintain the balance"
to deaton's regression of the mean:
deaton: gave you ever heard the term "regression to the mean?" scott: no... deaton: it's a bit of a technical way of saying things will always even out. scott: like, things will always get better? deaton: more like... things can't always be bad. scott: so, no matter how bad things get-- deaton: --or how good-- scott: they always come back to the middle.
they both want balance but don't seem to agree what balance looks like or how to achieve it.
i cannot wait to pick his character apart.

I know exactly how Obi-Wan and Cody would first meet in the fake Sith!Obi-Wan AU I am daydreaming about.
It’s very “oh no, he’s brave and selfless and good” from Obi-Wan’s POV, you know, the way we like it for this ship around here.
Unfortunately, the POV is Cody’s, and his impression is a lot less favourable.
Obi-Wan makes his usual post-sabotage exit and drops promptly drops off the map.
The entire GAR worries what the hit-and-run Sith is up to, because this is the longest stretch of quiet they’ve had since he first showed his face and it’s disconcerting. Cody worries and wonders why he’s not dead.
Off-screen, Obi-Wan has a panic attack because no one told him clones were actual people, he did not plan for that, how are the Jedi allowing this (well, he knows how - he is intimately familiar with the Order’s habit of considering people under their care convenient tools to be used for their own agenda, which switches from greater good to political necessity to will of the Force, depending on the mood of the Masters), why isn’t anybody doing anything!
