I'm doing a College class on Ancient Foods. My focus is on Honey like the different recipes and usages in Medieval era. I found like a couple recipes, a thing on religious relation ("Milk and Honey of Paradise") /Crusades, medicinal use, and possibly bees/beeswax because I was struggling to get something.

Y'all have any recommendations?

Can you include beverages? Honey is the main ingredient in mead, which should give you a lot to talk about. Susan Verberg is the premier researcher on medieval mead, and has some excellent works on both mead making and honey production. She has a website at https://medievalmeadandbeer.wordpress.com/ where you can find both her formal publications and her blog.

If you do want to talk about beverages, there were other medieval drinks that used honey. Some citations for you:

Definitely check out https://www.foodtimeline.org for recipes with honey during the period - they have more than you'd expect. There's also a few medieval cookbooks you can parse through. As for honey itself -- there's actually quite a bit of research on that! Honey was quite a specialized trade, and most of the medieval world used it for sweetener, so there's a good amount of research.

A few leads:

honey as an alternative to sugar, which was expensive, imported, and could indicate class

honey grading: honey was graded based on location/provenance, type (lavender, orange blossom, etc.), and also by grade. However, their method of grading was very different to our modern one.

honey as a preservative, not just for flavor

WHAT IS YOUR OTP FOR YOUR CHARACTER(S)?

In his most original creation, 10 years ago, Esmé was attached to a witch named Alice. He was charged with protecting her and his soul was bonded with hers. He fell deeply in love with her. I will always have a soft place in my heart for that ship, and if Alice's writer is out there somewhere I wish them nothing but happy days and to know I think about those two so very often.

As for presently - I only have 2 ships established on Esmé currently and I am deeply adoring both of them.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?

This will always be on a case-by-case scenario. Esmé is 35 minimum in his canon, pending younger for verses. In canon the most I would be comfortable would be perhaps 10 years? I feel as if a fresh twenty year old has a lot to learn and can too easily be exploited by older partners, so I'd like to steer away from inciting any of that dynamic or presentation. I can easily see him being involved with someone older than he is, however. There's not really a limit upward from 35. But again, it's all case-by-case, depending on the muses involved and the dynamic.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?

I can be. Mostly I look for chemistry with the muses and chemistry writing. We don't have to know each other intimately out of character --- the aforementioned mun who wrote Alice and I did not speak much out of character aside from dynamics on the occasion (things that reminded us of the muses) but we gelled very well with how we wrote and the chemistry was there. It really comes down to writing styles and interest in the ship itself. If one side is giving more than the other and it's obvious that they aren't really interested, it's easy to lose the feel in general.

WHO ARE OTHER CHARACTERS YOU SHIP YOUR CHARACTER WITH?

I'm open to anything, mostly. No taboo topics, nothing squicky, and Esmé is a bit pickier with his partners / who he has interest in but if all of the right boxes are checked I'll give it a whirl.

DOES ONE HAVE TO ASK TO SHIP WITH YOU?

All you have to say is "I ship this, do you?" I don't require much more, and a lot of people are shy or misread things. Just for clarification, sure. And if I don't see the ship that doesn't mean I won't in the future - it just likely means we need to write or discuss the dynamic more.

ARE YOU SHIP-OBSESSED OR SHIP MORE-OR-LESS?

I won't say obsessed but I'm tired of tiptoeing and pretending I'm not interested in ships of all kinds. Character relationships are what drive our development at the end of the day. So I'd say in-between, ship favorable.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SHIP IN YOUR CURRENT FANDOM?

I'm not in any particular fandom but some favorite ships are: Spike and Julia from Cowboy Bebop, Kerrigan and Raynor from Starcraft, Ana Amari and Reinhardt from Overwatch, Fiona and Sean from Shameless, Wolfgang and Kala from Sense8.

AI: A Misnomer

As you know, Game AI is a misnomer, a misleading name. Games usually don't need to be intelligent, they just need to be fun. There is NPC behaviour (be they friendly, neutral, or antagonistic), computer opponent strategy for multi-player games ranging from chess to Tekken or StarCraft, and unit pathfinding. Some games use novel and interesting algorithms for computer opponents (Frozen Synapse uses deome sort of evolutionary algorithm) or for unit pathfinding (Planetary Annihilation uses flow fields for mass unit pathfinding), but most of the time it's variants or mixtures of simple hard-coded behaviours, minimax with alpha-beta pruning, state machines, HTN, GOAP, and A*.

Increasingly, AI outside of games has become a misleading term, too. It used to be that people called more things AI, then machine learning was called machine learning, robotics was called robotics, expert systems were called expert systems, then later ontologies and knowledge engineering were called the semantic web, and so on, with the remaining approaches and the original old-fashioned AI still being called AI.

AI used to be cool, then it was uncool, and the useful bits of AI were used for recommendation systems, spam filters, speech recognition, search engines, and translation. Calling it "AI" was hand-waving, a way to obscure what your system does and how it works.

With the advent if ChatGPT, we have arrived in the worst of both worlds. Calling things "AI" is cool again, but now some people use "AI" to refer specifically to large language models or text-to-image generators based on language models. Some people still use "AI" to mean autonomous robots. Some people use "AI" to mean simple artificial neuronal networks, bayesian filtering, and recommendation systems. Infuriatingly, the word "algorithm" has increasingly entered the vernacular to refer to bayesian filters and recommendation systems, for situations where a computer science textbook would still use "heuristic". Computer science textbooks still use "AI" to mean things like chess playing, maze solving, and fuzzy logic.

Let's look at a recent example! Scott Alexander wrote a blog post (https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/god-help-us-lets-try-to-understand) about current research (https://transformer-circuits.pub/2023/monosemantic-features/index.html) on distributed representations and sparsity, and the topology of the representations learned by a neural network. Scott Alexander is a psychiatrist with no formal training in machine learning or even programming. He uses the term "AI" to refer to neural networks throughout the blog post. He doesn't say "distributed representations", or "sparse representations". The original publication he did use technical terms like "sparse representation". These should be familiar to people who followed the debates about local representations versus distributed representations back in the 80s (or people like me who read those papers in university). But in that blog post, it's not called a neural network, it's called an "AI". Now this could have two reasons: Either Scott Alexander doesn't know any better, or more charitably he does but doesn't know how to use the more precise terminology correctly, or he intentionally wants to dumb down the research for people who intuitively understand what a latent feature space is, but have never heard about "machine learning" or "artificial neural networks".

Another example can come in the form of a thought experiment: You write an app that helps people tidy up their rooms, and find things in that room after putting them away, mostly because you needed that app for yourself. You show the app to a non-technical friend, because you want to know how intuitive it is to use. You ask him if he thinks the app is useful, and if he thinks people would pay money for this thing on the app store, but before he answers, he asks a question of his own: Does your app have any AI in it?

What does he mean?

=The Far Future AU=

This is if I were to write Devil's Eye with a more sci-fi bent, leaning closer to influences from my favorite science fiction media as opposed to historical/period/pirate, and is intended for RP with futuristic muses and blogs.

The Legend of the Devil's Eye still applies as it would in the Main Story and the Modern AU, but taken further; in the far distant future, all of that is… well, just that. Legend. Pirate stories to tell your children as they are tucked in at night, and nothing more. What is not known, however, is that the Devil of the Sea not only still walks without his missing Eye, but the world has passed enough hands enough where searching for it has become fruitless… especially as sources of power in humanity's souls are starting to reach for the stars.

As such, the Devil has abandoned his search, opting to have… different sources of storing his power as it continues to grow. And these sources… well. The centuries haven't been kind to them or their humanity. The worst of mankind has taken a toll on what were once his last minions, but rather than allow them to go to waste, their essences are repurposed to be personal extensions of him… and how they are used is up to however he wants to at the time.

No matter the form the one once called "Master", he will always wear a necklace of seven pearls of seven different colors. In order for whatever power he has to be complete, he must keep all seven on his person at all times.

The Master, however, still requires to find the Devil's Eye--his original lost Eye--to be wholly defeated. But that would require returning to Earth and rediscovering the Legend that tells of how the Devil lost his Eye to begin with.

OOC, the focus muse of RP in the Far Distant AU is the Master, usually donning his Dr. Delmar Agdeppa disguise. However, this disguise is one of many, but with his power waxing and waning like the tides, and said power having to be divided up and store in seven different places instead of just two, he must be extra careful in how he uses that power. He will, then, continue to seek out souls, either to devour or enthrall.

As for La Demonia Roja and the Crew, that is up to the partner muse. One of the following sub-verses can used:

Variant A: The history of Earth has destroyed the humanity in the Seven so thoroughly, their bodies and souls can barely hold on any longer. However, rather than simply turn them into his Locker, the Master just repurposed them with what is left of their souls as they are wholly reduced to their Sins. Destroying a specific pearl on the necklace will release that soul into the Devil's Locker all while chipping away a bit of the Master's power. This is automatically this Verse's Doomned Ending, as the Sins are reduced to their vices and have lost their humanities altogether.

Variant B: Well, duh, humans can't handle the vaccuum of space, so the Master just kind of…. hid his thralls in pearls. Taking a pearl and breaking it will release that Sin, though it'll take a while for them to regain their bearings. They'll still be soulbound to the Master, however. Finding a way to free them will require the standard Voyage of the Devil's Eye storyline, just with whatever tech is available in this verse.

As for what kind of sci-fi I'm riding on, it's mostly the soft kind. It's also left underdeveloped so I can adjust to the Verse of the partner muse. Hence, I can easily fit it into Alien, Metroid, F-Zero, Treasure Planet, DOOM, Starcraft, any science fiction verse where an Earth may have existed once upon a time. Just don't ask how 'souls' are defined by that verse, lmao. That's too much a headache.

"m'am, why the fuck" it was validating it was powerful it is everything the character arc of the entire Zerg species was building up to and it turned Kerrigan into the antihero she was always meant to be, and LotV is probably great but that epilogue ruined it with a pointless second transformation.

Look, Kerrigan's character arc in Brood War was top notch it was S tier it was great I wrote a literal essay about how I do sincerely believe Kerrigan in SC1 + Brood War had a heroic character arc, and I am of course correct, and the canon agrees, BUT WE WILL GET TO THAT,

now initially ofc i was like naw SC2 never happened. Obviously I've softened on that opinion (but saying it never happened is funny. so is acting like everyone is missing the point of Kerrigan except for me. this blog is the space where i get to play up an extremely cocky persona ok)

SC2's general insistence (at least that's my first impression) on treating her zergness like a boring corruption and "ooh Kerrigan was good before but she's evil now" bothers me. like they do this to her instead of, oh I don't know, she was abused and exploited as a child fucking soldier, she latched onto the guy who 'saved' her and was too wrapped up in the exhilaration of having someone who 'cared' about her that she couldn't recognize she was being used as literal fucking bait, and then he LEFT HER TO FUCKING GET EATEN BY ALIENS, and by the grace of fucking god, those aliens saw her value and potential in a way no one else ever could, they elevated her, made her stronger, gave her the means to break off the shackles implanted in her skull (remember the Amerigo mission???), and from that point on, all the anger she'd been harboring from all those years of abuse could run freely, so of fucking course she became impatient and vengeful!

Yes, Kerrigan was extremely destructive, spiteful, cruel,even! But you think someone who's only ever known violence and death and cruelty could ever be anything else? are we so naiive as to imagine a perfectly human Sarah Kerrigan would not become the Queen of Blades Her fatal flaw is wrath, you see how quick she is to anger when she fights Tassadar. To quote the man himself,

"So long as you continue to be so predictable, O Queen, I need not face you at all. You are your own worst enemy."

she is predictable because of her wrath. In her beginning as the Queen of Blades, she's too consumed by all her fury, by her newfound power that she can and will use to demolish everyone who's wronged her, and she hasn't yet learned the wisdom required to use said power. this is a flaw she overcomes in Brood War, wherein she delays her fury and rage to arrange a temporary alliance, to wait for just the right moment to have her vengeance and crush her enemies.

aaaaaand here's the Wings of Liberty campaign going like "Zerg turned her evil. yeah she's killing and infecting terrans bcs that's what zerg do. we need to redeem her by removing her zergyness."

like - no acknowledgement to the fact that the terrans are currently being commanded by the dude who used her and then fucking left her to die???? bro like of all people you'd think Raynor would understand why she's waging war on the Dominion HE'S LITERALLY DOING THE SAME THING, but Blizzard gonna Blizzard and the final boss is Kerrigan bcs Raynor's gotta work with the Dominion to neutralize the greater threat - which is somehow Kerrigan. Could he have maybe been introduced in a less jarring way okay sure but he didn't derail shit, this WAS the rails, you just got too caught up in the surface level fighting to recognize what was happening!

also, the Amon plotline was (before that FUCKING EPILOGUE) so extremely validating to me, let me tell you a story about when i was playing HotS - no, even before HotS, whcih did a lot of good stuff, in fucking Wings of Liberty, a campaign I just spent a few paragraphs shitting on, it did one super good thing. it did the Zeratul missions. It did this shit:

oh I imagine a lot of Starcraft fans hated this cutscene bcs it was an out of nowhere messiah plotline delivered via literal exposition ghost, but, see, I'm smarter than your average Starcraft fan, I am a genius and I'm sexy, and I know my wife Kerrigan better than anyone, even the fucking Starcraft writers (suck my dick Metzen) and I see this cutscene at 7:33PM, April 29, 2021, and I ran into my friend's DMs and said "I FUCKING CALLED IT"

BECAUSE I WROTE A FANFIC (unfinished, novel-length, self-indulgent, OCxKerrigan, highly nsfw, no I haven't posted it anywhere I wanna finish it first I wanna perfect it).

AND IN THAT FANFIC I WROTE SOMETHING SO ABSOLUTELY DERANGED I FIGURED IT WAS JUST SELF INDULGENT ABSOLUTE SKEWERING OF THE CANON JUST TO RUN SHAMELESS ZERG APOLOGIA:

2. I'm gonna try and watch Andor again, because despite not enjoying Cassian as a character until halfway through Rogue One, there's other things to see in the show. Plus watching the Empire get annoyed is glorious.

3. I'm Mormon, I cuss mildly and write smut, we're not a cult (yes, even according to the BITE model). Some members of *any* religion can be so zealous to be cult like. If you don't like, block me. If you have genuine questions, I can answer.

4. I need multiple reminders to reply to tags as I'm busy recovering from cancer and changing anxiety/depression meds, so my memory is shit right now. I also have chronic fatigue and ADHD and much stress, but that's more in the background.

5. I need fanfic editors who will actually shred, there's no way I write good enough for only a few superficial changes. Mostly writing Star Wars right now, DM me for my WIP list. I stubbornly support my editor, who is super busy with real life. Doesn't fix my (irrational) sense of hopelessness. Why write if never edited?

As far as fandom spheres go... I'm presently (technically) active in the Final Fantasy XIV, Undertale, and Starbound spheres. In so far as they're always lurking on my mind and I frequently consume / write Fanfiction, headcanon, or play them. These three are not likely to change anytime soon. XIV has been going strong for 8 years, Undertale recently I believe hit it's 4th year anniversary. And Starbound is the baby of the group with a little less than a year under its belt, though it's a repeat on/off for the last few years.

While those might be my main spheres, I do engage in and generally enjoy quite a few more. In RTS games, while graphically things can look simpler; oftentimes the AI working behind the scenes is more mathematically complex. For example, in something like StarCraft, the game will have a 'build order' as part of its AI, telling it when to build workers, buildings or units. It will then give the effect of strategic planning, deciding when to rush or stay back, when to expand their forces, and attacking when it assumes it has enough units. It does this by analysing how many units/how much power the player has, but it also does somewhat cheat by automatically knowing the location of buildings and strategic points within the map. There are interesting ways people have scaled the power of different AI factions, including pitting two AIs of equal intelligence against each other to see the random number generator decide a victor. It is interesting to note that the most aggressive AIs are often the least proficent, as they endlessly deploy troops with little to no defences or supply lines.

In open world games, AI has to be advanced enough to traverse gigantic levels. Ironically, more advanced AI can often look more ridiculous - think the famously braindead NPCs in so many Bethesda games. I'll hold onto this idea for a bit; interestingly, Skyrim NPCs can run away from a fight, or give up, which isn't something you see in a lot of games. The Courier character will literally follow you anywhere on the map to deliver a message to you, and while determined, will oftentimes end up being attacked due to their tunnel vision.

The thing with fashion is that you have to know what it is, and I’ve been trying to watch The Mysterious Karl Lagerfeld on Prime Video, I’ve been trying to watch his fashion shows on YouTube, and it’s just this identity what’s being shown, because it can controversial as, “Only the chic make it.” And that’s part of the reason why I selfie, because we live in peer pressure time, we live in an era where everything need a facial surgery, and I think it’s wrong for the clothing business to brain wash ordinary shoppers. And this is evident with the attention my profile get, not too many people are gonna show hearts for my stuff. But like I said, I have to get the ball rolling, and am pleased that am some how relevant. Every now and then in the past, I would have people comment that western civilization is a fixed, and that you can’t do much for wealth, and prosperity, but it’s been a roller coaster ride in terms of literally uprooting my social media sites especially Instagram. And you see this with my StarCraft 2, or political titles, because it had a purposed, of course the depressing part is that am used left empty to the point of near extinction. And yesterday, I was challenged to come up with a new title on my Instagram, am being so political with the name that I don’t know anything else. But at this point, I’ve given up what to put up, because I don’t think I have the prowess for it. And what I mean by prowess is to take matters to the street, because at the back of my mind, am saying that I’ve done this so many times, I’ve been to various places, like what else is there? It’s helpful to look at other people’s work, and kinda’ guess where the inspiration are coming from. Social media is basically just getting ideas from each other, and for my part, I try to figure out if it’s do-able. Simplicity is really the bread and butter, because you have entities that are possible to do, I don’t have to be Tom Cruise where am jumping off a plane in a middle of lightning storm. And this is probably why I watch a lot of movies, so I can investigate what I can do out of it.
