im back in the trenches so heres some small(ish) scale stuff i wish sso had:

you could talk to the npcs even if they didnt have quests, even if its just a single line or like “what im busy” when you get too close to them like how they do in fort maria. i love that stuff. i want the mean npcs to tell me to get lost

you could forage for horse food? like why can i forage for rubia and jute and whatever but theres no carrots or apples i can pick. please im spending all my money on gear

kind of related to the last one and ive mentioned it before, but i wish horses had randomly selected favorite and least favorite foods that would give more or less xp if you fed it too them.

the soul riders should have things they do. anne should do dressage training, lisa could go on trail rides, linda could be wandering around the silverglade library, etc. just something so theyre not standing around doing nothing for months.

are all the crafting stations in valedale? if so thats stupid. add crafting stations to ranger outposts and the rescue ranch and other things. if thats already a thing then disregard this

you should get a crafting kit, not for everything, just for like some of the small stuff you get from path of terra or whatever, maybe make it so you can only use it while sitting down somewhere to give sitting and actual use

And here are my thoughts and theories on each of them (as well as fourth-wall breaks, and theories I do not like):

Mrs Flood:

She is Susan. I believe that ‘Susan’ Twist is a red herring, and Susan deserves her return. The fact that Ruby mentioned that she would be living in her time makes me even more sure, especially considering Ruby’s tendency to make things ‘happen’ - Strictly, Star Trek - more on that later.

She is River Song. A huge jump in likelihood, because I do believe her story is over, but you never know, and I don’t think I would be complaining about her return particularly. We don’t know Mrs Flood’s first name, which might be for a reason. Melody Pond, River Song and then xxxx Flood.

She is the One Who Waits. I’m going to probably say this about everyone but… idk what else to say. sHe’S tHe RaNi!!!11!!

Susan Twist:

She is the One Who Waits/part of the Pantheon of Gods. It just seems likely.

She is Ruby/Ruby’s mother. Seems the least likely, but in that case it would be a situation of ‘watching over’ Ruby in a way, but Susan Twist looks nothing like Ruby, so very unlikely.

She is no one/a spy. This works well for my first point regarding Ruby’s parent, but I think she might be a spy for The Trickster to keep an eye on the Doctor/Ruby. They could also be the same thing as the ‘Bad Wolf’, ‘Torchwood’ and ‘Vote Saxon’ - they don’t make sense until the finale, she might not make sense until the finale.

The One Who Waits:

Obviously one of the pantheon of Gods - I do believe the most powerful.

Probably Ruby’s mother, or someone related to Ruby.

We don’t know who they are yet. Some new guy. Hoping any one of these.

Ruby’s Parent:

THE TRICKSTER FROM THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES! The hood and cloak are the same, the desolate London is so similar and the theme when Maria has The Trickster’s box in her bed and when Ruby was hoisted into the air is the same - please just search on youtube, it will probably be there. Plus, The Trickster would work well with the Pantheon of Gods - the Gods of CHAOS - what The Trickster thrives on.

A powerful being from the Gods of Chaos - an evil thing, the One Who Waits.

Someone the Doctor may recognise - though I doubt it somehow.

Ruby:

The daughter of one of the Gods of Chaos - you cannot deny her powers, in terms of the snow, mentioning things and then they exist - she mentions the Butterfly Effect- it happens. She mentions Star Trek in Space Babies, and the crew are dressed in uniforms eerily similar to the Star Trek ones. She mentions Strictly - who come but Johannes and Shirley from Strictly.

A supernatural entity - like a changeling, or something like that. The DNA scan said she was human, but it was only 70% done - that might be foreshadowing something - in terms that she is not human. In The Wild Blue Yonder, The Doctor let superstition come in - maybe he also let Ruby in.

A bad guy. One of the Gods of Chaos, the One Who Waits. Getting close to The Doctor all this time… maybe this won’t even be revealed until series 15. That would be great in my opinion honestly!

The last episode - ‘The Legend of Ruby Sunday’ makes me believe that she is older than she is. It is not the story, it is the legend - the Google definition being ‘a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not authenticated. Not a word being used for a 19-year-old girl from Manchester, methinks.

Fourth-wall breaks: The Legend of Ruby Sunday seems to be based on a TV show - now we get to the ‘Doctor Who’ is a TV show in ‘Doctor Who’ - e.g. The Doctor can hear the non-diegetic music. I think this is a great idea. (I have written a fan-fiction about this 2 years ago hehe).

I DO NOT think these theories are true: 

The Doctor is Ruby’s parent. Nope. Too obvious, lazy and just plain weird.

Ruby is Ruby’s parent?? Weird and impossible. Very very timey-wimey.

The Master is returning - I don’t think they are this series - keep in mind that we only last saw them 6 episodes as of now (after Boom - not counting The Tooth).

Remember the paintings in Fort Maria? I found the original artist on Deviant and messaged them about it, mostly by curiosity about these illustrations and they weren't even aware that SSO used the illustrations in the game.

Idk but for me it doesn't sounds really good, the fact they cancelled a possible game idea ( for the story they already cancelled a mobile game ), the fact they didn't even mention the utilisation to the artist ( not the most problematic as they probably paid for these concepts, even if they could mention it just for the artist to add it to the description and maybe to even link it to the game, Idk, like free ad for both sides) and the fact they used something not related to the lore of the game like AT ALL.

Roman ruins are already dumb in that universe but aztec ? Uh... That just sound like "Ok guys, now we gain that much money from desperate dumbasses ready to buy every crap we release we could think about making new illustrations for an area... Oh no, let's put something totally not related, maybe it'll keep them busy making theories and they won't rant about the new overpriced horse?"

Edit for the questions:

For the painting itself it's the green landscape with waterfalls and statue heads, you can find it in Fort Maria easily, also on youtube and here in one of my previous posts ( just search the tag #sso ) . The artist is on Deviantart and easily found. They were happy to know that their art was used for something.

As for the already cancelled game it's star stable run, which if it's not made by them remains their product, and was probably cancelled due to the fact they changed the soul riders. Here the artist was speaking about something not related to SSO at all, like another project. But as the teams and leads changed, we can only guess it's a project which they abandoned now as they used the artwork for something else.

Now I obviously don't know more about it, and for me it's the main reason we had some sudden weird and unfitting details like the roman ruins, they probably just used old artwork for different things and tried to recycle it.

Once again it's suppositions/ theories so just keep that in mind, it's just the end of the theories and speculations related to this artwork.

Assassins Creed PacRim AU suggestion! Kassandra and Brasidas are 1000000% Drift Compatible. I mean how could they not be with that warehouse scene? Also Nikolaos and Stentor are essentially the equivalent of the Aussie father/hot-headed son duo.

kassandra and alexios used to co-pilot until a kaiju attack similar to the opening scenes of the movie. the siblings are separated, the jaeger is destroyed, and alexios is presumed dead. unbeknownst to the shatterdome gang (the assassins), alexios actually did survive the attack; maybe he drifted with the kaiju somehow, but either way when he comes out of the ocean he joins the kaiju-worshipping cult that you see glimpses of in the hong kong portions of the movie (cult of kosmos -> cult of kaiju? lmao) and reveres the kaiju as gods. maybe if we really wanna play up the deimos persona he sees himself as a messenger of some sort since he drifted with a kaiju and survived.

no one knows alexios is in the cult until leonardo is sent to the bone slums to get the kaiju brain and spots him out in the street or on some cultist propaganda that’s being handed out or sometehing

idk what kassandra does in the intervening years but i think alexios’ “death”/disappearance would prompt her to retire from piloting. maybe she trains the other pilots and works directly under the marshal?

spinoff where kass and brasidas go and get alexios back? everyone else can deal with punching the big monsters, but someone has to do something about taking down the kaiju cult lol

i’m thinking about this more and this could be really interesting bc following alexios’ “death” maybe kassandra is reluctant to get back in the jaeger — the drift compatibility was something she shared with alexios and she doesn’t know if she can open up to anyone else like that. would be interesting to see how brasidas helps her cope with that in the years where everyone thinks alexios is dead, and maybe eventually she and brasidas do end up copiloting together but even with him by her side her heart just isn’t in it anymore. hence taking more of a supervisorial role and helping to train the next wave of pilots

anyway,  speaking  of  maria  ...  you  know  the  drill,  annual  maria  rant  (  under  the  cut  this  time  because  it’s  long  and  i’m  sure  some  people  might  get  tired  of  me  talking  about  her  lol  )

i  think  if  i  ever  did  actually  bring  her  in  as  a  guest  muse  (  which  ...  idk,  maybe  ?  i’ve  always  wanted  to  at  least  lol  )  i  might  rethink  the  way  that  i’ve  been  envisioning  her  for  the  past  few  years.  keep  in  mind  that  the  only  time  maria  is  brought  up  in  -  game  is  during  leon’s  proposal  event,  although  she  is  subtly  alluded  to  in  his  date  event  as  well,  though  this  is  only  realized  upon  retrospection.

the  event  makes  it  clear  of  course  that  maria  was  leon’s  closest  (  human  lol  )  childhood  friend  and  that  they  did  everything  and  went  everywhere  together  from  a  young  age.  while  he  viewed  him  as  a  younger  sister,  she  had  romantic  feelings  for  him  since  they  were  children.  he  also  described  her  as  being  a  crybaby  when  she  was  young,  too,  which  eventually  led  to  their  infamous  promise  -  leon,  desperate  to  stop  maria  from  crying  when  she  was  inconsolable  one  day,  questioned  if  there  was  anything  that  he  could  do  to  get  her  to  stop,  and  she  asked  if  she  could  marry  him  one  day.  he  agreed,  and  they  later  marked  their  names  on  the  temple  (  leon  karnak  )  in  the  old  tongue  as  a  symbol  of  this  vow.  since  that  day,  even  though  leon  later  forgot  all  about  the  promise  after  having  dismissed  it  as  just  another  silly  childhood  game  or  otherwise  a  phase  she  would  eventually  grow  out  of,  she  never  cried  again  :

even  on  the  day  when  leon  left  to  become  a  guardian,  maria  stood  at  a  distance  behind  everyone  else,  looking  as  though  she  might  cry  at  any  minute  but  not  allowing  herself  to  even  once  :

this,  of  course,  is  what  led  him  to  remembering  their  childhood  promise,  and  became  the  crux  of  his  guilt  that  wound  up  as  his  basis  for  distancing  himself  from  the  rest  of  the  townsfolk  once  he  woke  up  in  the  modern  age  and  vowing  to  never  marry  anyone  so  as  not  to  trample  on  her  feelings  more  than  he  already  had.  her  letters  that  she  wrote  to  him  also  reveal  that  she  waited  for  him  for  decades,  still  not  crying  even  once,  eager  to  keep  their  promise  even  after  he  was  gone.  even  though  it  is  later  revealed  through  a  ~  wacky  turn  of  events  ~  that  maria  did  eventually  find  someone  and  get  married  (  and,  ultimately,  became  happy  ),  this  becomes  the  main  conflict  in  lftp  --  should  leon  allow  himself  to  find  his  own  happiness  after  believing  he  had  taken  away  hers  ?  on  top  of  that,  maria  also  revealed  that  her  neighbors,  not  knowing  about  their  promise,  found  her  harsh  and  unfeeling  after  she  never  appeared  to  grieve,  even  after  her  parents  died  and  her  other  friends  slowly  left  her,  leaving  her  alone.  why  should  leon  get  to  have  friends  and  start  his  own  family  when,  he  thought,  he  took  away  her  chance  of  having  her  own  by  stealing  her  tears  ?

the  story  of  course  does  have  a  happy  ending,  revealing  that  maria  did  end  up  having  a  happy  life  as  stated  above  and  that  she  wrote  a  book  detailing  her  married  life,  written  in  the  ancient  tongue  that  she  and  leon  had  learned  together  as  children,  that  she  hoped  that  leon  would  one  day  be  able  to  read  when  he  woke  up  again  so  that  he  would  know  not  to  feel  guilty.  she  even  made  a  wish  for  him  using  a  blessing  from  their  childhood  that  he  would  find  his  own  happiness  as  well.

this  is  all  information  that  has  been  integral  to  my  portrayal  of  leon  since  ...  i  started  this  blog,  actually  LMAO.  his  guilt  towards  maria  and  believing  that  he  irrevocably  ruined  the  life  and  stole  the  happiness  of  one  of  the  people  most  dear  to  him,  alongside  his  inability  to  relate  to  the  modern  age  and  some  good  old  -  fashioned  survivor’s  guilt  to  boot,  are  the  main  reasons,  in  my  opinion,  that  he  works  so  hard  to  ensure  that  the  people  of  selphia  only  know  him  on  a  superficial,  surface  level  --  haha  he’s  the  guy  that  jokes  around  and  teases  people  !  you  don’t  want  to  become  his  next  target,  do  you  ?  it’s  not  that   deep,  don’t  look  at  him  too  closely,  haha  !  that  being  said,  i  did  notice  on  my  most  recent  playthrough  there  a  couple  of  thing  that  over  the  past  few  years  i  had  kind  of  ...  forgotten  about.

i  mentioned  earlier  that  i  had  always  kind  of  hoped  to  add  maria  as  a  guest  muse  here,  so  i’ve  always  been  pretty  interested  in  what  kind  of  person  maria  was.  of  course  maria  is  someone  who  leon  cherishes  highly,  referring  to  her  as  a  ‘  sweet  girl  ’  that  he  regarded  as  a  little  sister,  someone  who  used  to  cry  all  the  time  and  was  later  thought  of  as  cold  and  mean  after  leon  left.  given  that  this  event  is  the  only  time  in  game  we  hear  about  her,  there  is  so  little  information  that  we  actually  know  about  her,  and  all  of  it  is  from  leon’s  word  of  mouth  or  from  maria’s  direct  perspective.  i’ve  always  taken  what  little  info  we  do  know  and  have  seen  her  as  someone  who  was  ...  kind  of  quiet,  but  kind.  timid,  perhaps,  and  maybe  didn’t  have  many  friends  due  to  her  shyness.  a  lot  of  this,  i  do  still  absolutely  stand  by  !!  however,  there  are  a  couple  of  things  that  i  noticed  during  my  most  recent  playthrough  that  i  think  are  really  vital  in  understanding  the  kind  of  person  maria  was.

the  first  thing  i  noticed  that  stood  out  to  me  was  the  emphasis  on  leon  being  really  maria’s  only  friend,  and  perhaps  even  him  being  the  only  person  that  really  actually  cared  for  her.  when  he  talks  about  viewing  maria  as  a  little  sister,  he  does  explicitly  say  that  perhaps  he  was  the  only  one  who  thought  of  her  in  that  light.

it’s  hard  to  know  exactly  what  he  means  by  this  because  there  is  just  sooo  little  information  regarding  their  childhood,  but  to  me  this  reads  that  she  was  someone  who  didn’t  really  have  anyone  but  leon,  maybe  even  possibly  someone  who  was  shunned  or  disliked  by  her  peers.  

another  thing  that  struck  me  when  playing  through  it  again  was,  of  course,  leon’s  breakdown  upon  finding  maria’s  “  final  “  letter.  at  the  beginning  of  his  rant,  there  have  always  been  a  handful  of  lines  that  have  stayed  with  me  through  the  years  :

these  are  the  first  lines  that  leon  says  right  at  the  beginning  of  his  speech,  right  when  he’s  transitioning  from  shock  to  spilling  over  in  grief.  keep  in  mind  that  his  partner  with  him  has  never  said  a  single  word  throughout  this  (  except  for  maybe  his  name  ?  i  can’t  quite  remember  lol  )  and  that  this  is  his  instinctual  first  response  to  finding  and  reading  this  letter  --  to  protect  maria.  it  could  just  be  in  response  to  what  maria  said  in  the  letter  about  people  finding  her  distant  and  mean,  but  keeping  the  information  above  about  him  being  the  only  person  that  thought  of  her  kindly  (  or,  at  least,  in  a  sisterly  way  )  i  find  that  the  fact  that  leon’s  very  first  response  is  to  guard  her  from  accusations  of  being  ‘  cold  ’  to  be  really  interesting.  to  me,  it  seems  like  it’s  almost  second  nature  to  him,  like  it’s  something  that  he’s  done  in  the  past.

i’m  not  entirely  sure  exactly  where  i  stand  on  the  topic  of  maria’s  personality,  but  it’s  clear  that  she’s  a  lot  more  interesting  and  complex  than  i  think  i  previous  gave  her  credit  for.

Alright, some pros. I like the Maiden affects on Winter. They looked good, I liked that the particles looked like powdered snow. Winter makes a very regal and kickass maiden maybe she should been from the start instead of resurrecting a character just to recycle shock value and grief idk. Winter also shows Ruby how sister grief should be done. I don't know why RT didn't go this hard for Ruby, they clearly can, but whatever.

Cinder is also the best she's been since V3 - like, I was blown away by how entertaining she was in these last two episodes. Kudos. A bit too late considering what a dead weight she's been for 4.8 volumes, but I'm trying to be positive for this section.

Uhhh... Weiss shooting Blake's gun and using it to support her rapier was cool. Makes me think that a weapon swap training exercise would have been cool so Weiss actually knows how to shoot it. The episode score was nice. There was this one part I remember thinking "oh, I really like that", but I can't remember what it was. I think Atlas falling with Qrow/Ace-Ops onlooking, but I'm not rewatching to find out.

I didn't expect Jaune to fall, so at least they didn't spoil that in the damn opening. Weiss/Jaune/Penny team up would have been cool, and I'm sorry we didn't see more of it. Oh! Weiss actually used her sword as a sword... but the wrong kind of sword.

We might be getting into African folklore/fairy tales/myths - not sure if that's a pro, but I know some people will be happy. The tree in the end credits scene looks like an African species, though I wouldn't swear to it; I'm not a botanist. Honestly, my first thought was Yggdrisal, but the style of the tree makes me doubt it. I'll have to see if there are any significant trees in African fairy tales.

Cons time.

Penny. Why the hell did you resurrect her, do nothing interesting with her despite the multiple set-ups to interesting concepts, and then just murder her? Much like everything else this volume, it didn't need to happen. It was an ultimately pointless diversion before eventually getting back to what was orginally going to happen anyway. It's an attempt to get the same rush of emotion and grief from V3, but it utterly fails to do so because we've been through this already. How many times are we going to see Penny die? And I love Penny... I'm just... not okay with this, and I can't articulate how very well. Expect a lot of posts reblogged that I think say it better than I ever could.

Reactions and voice acting. There are so many points, practically in the first quarter, where I'm like "why is this character doing this/not doing this/pulling this face?" Weiss pushing Ruby away from a fire trap but not bothering to move herself. Weiss's voice acting sounding completely phoned in. Ruby looking almost bored and annoyed by Neo's approach. Still no good reaction to Yang's death from Ruby. Weiss reacted better to Ruby and Blake's death by shooting at Cinder through tears. Hell, Jaune reacted better to Penny's death, he at least screamed. And oh, I cant wait for the gender related takes on that, because they're going to be horrific and I can't decide if I'm going to cringe or laugh - Dimitri vs Edelgard was bad enough. There's just so much weird animation where the characters seem to forget they have lightning fast reflexes or should be emoting a certain way. We've seen Ruby deflect bullets, you're telling me she can't dodge an obvious trap? Also, Ruby using her semblance effectively multiple times this episode is just... really rubbing in how bullshit it is that she didn't even try to catch Yang - AND HER EYES. Use your damn eyes, you could have blown Cinder back at any point, but no, the writers don't want to have to actually be consistent with that so they can have their precious fall. It's not quite as bad as V5's finale, but I'm getting those vibes. Too much standing around, slow movements, characters not utilizing their abilities - I'm just disappointed.

Why is Willow's hand gorilla-flued to Whitley? It's getting creepy now. Stop it. Let him be a character, don't lump him in with Willow as "Weiss's redeemed family".

Everything with Qrow/Ace Ops/Robyn/bomb. Shit plot point put tacked on at the last second, has no impact on the audience since we're not supposed to actually care about the AceOps, and Vine wasn't one we actually got to have any scenes with before his death. Oh, and Robyn's not dead. That's a con, I'm sticking to it. She is the most annoying, infuriating, and pointless character in this history of RWBY, and I want to stab her repeatedly.

Also - not sure if this is a pro or con - I liked Qrow's reaction to realizing, hey, my nieces might be totes dead, but it comes so late, like an after thought, like why weren't you concerned with this before now? Do they even know if people were evacuated?

Where the hell are Pierto and Maria? Dead, I guess, since they just floated away offscreen into the freezing cold, but Qrow Co will probably pick them up next volume. Oh, great, another split volume, 3 ways this time. Qrow and Co, the Vacuo people, and RWBYJ.

Ahhhh, can't they have just killed the bomb crew? Or hell, have the void actually kill. It would be a ballsy, gut punch of a move, something no one would expect since I've seen literally no one (including most of the characters) react like the characters are actually dead. Seeing Winter react to Weiss's death, seeing her grief and resolve as she floats out of the portal - I realized that I want more of that. I would much rather see the side characters take on Vacuo, see how they pick up the pieces - hell, I may actually keep creatively acquiring RWBY just to watch the Vacuo sections. I like Winter, Whitley, Oscar, Ren, and the HH that aren't Robyn - I'll watch a show with them trying to keep together two cities worth of civilian refugees in a place like Vacuo. And hey, Sun and Neptune. I like Sun, and maybe without Blake there, he can connect with the side characters and not be horribly mistreated for the sake of the ship that shall not be named.

There's honestly so much more I could say, but I'm tired and hungry, so I'm just going to leave it there for now. Please don't try and argue with me in the notes about how wrong and stupid I am. This is a vent post, not an invitation to debate. I'm just really disappointed and I'm not sure how to feel about it.

Season 2 Episode 3

So as I said, an episode today, and that's exactly what I'm doing. Woo, let's go! Just give me like 15 minutes to get everything g set up (I say as if I'm not posting this all as one big post where no one even notices the length of time I take)

So it's been a more than a week and I definitely need the recap this time. Lol.

Holy shit! He burned up fast. Well, you know I can't say shooting wasn't at least partially justified. But I will say that keeping them all locked up the way they did for decades wasn't (I refuse to give the military people much leeway).

Ok, so since she didn't die here, and she also was free for at least a year, this man either let her go, or something happened to him. We shall see the answer (maybe)

It took me a minute to remember everyone (sans Maria because she still knows nothing) knows about Max now. Lmao. I was so confused when Alex walked in

I like how even though both Liz and Jenna are in love with Max (in some sense. Obviously Liz 100% main ship and all, but Jenna could not quite be in love, we just know she cared a lot about him) they still get along really well. True adults. I'm used to teens in media.

Isobel is not doing well right now. Please at least get someone with you. Someone who can actually help you and not just imaginary (still potentially a little real) Max.

I love how close Isobel and Max are. Like they're not reflective of my sibling experience, but it's still nice to see siblings actually being this close.

Ok this show is actually pretty good at delving into real world issues naturally. Immigration, abortion laws, drug addiction, abuse, trauma. It deals with all these topics, some of them very much political, and it does it well.

Maria is not gonna be happy with Michael once she learns he knows. If she doesn't already know with Rosa explaining it.... messy messy

Yeah ok, Rosa explained everything. This is gonna be messy. If only they decided to let Maria in earlier like I wanted...

I really like this discussion between Max and Isobel. Like I actually feel this whole storyline with Izzy is a very important one, and I really appreciate the writers giving it the weight it deserves.

She's struggling so much, and Max's anxiety over whether she'll get it or not is seeping into me.

Yes, give me the answers. This other alien lady is fucking dying though, and I hope she ends up alright. Also this man seems like a good guy considering he definitely didn't turn them in back then, and was even in the picture smiling with Michael's mom. I think he's the only human character from back then that I like thus far.

Do you think Jasper was upset with himself after the incident he had at Bella's party?

I’d imagine so.  Even if he’s not especially close to Bella at that point (she says he tended to keep a distance), he knows better than everyone except maybe Alice how intense Edward’s emotions are for this girl, even if no future has been decided yet (no planned wedding or vampirization, etc). There’s a line from Carlisle in the book that something to the effect of “Edward, go talk to Jasper, you’re probably the only one he’ll listen to right now” implying that yes Jasper will fell terrible and that Edward might be able to reason with him/make him feel better because it was Edward’s human girlfriend he almost killed. In this particular instance I think the human in question was part of what made Jasper feel bad, but with other slip ups I almost feel like it was more about feeling ‘weak’ than being wracked with guilt about ending a human life. I’ve said before that I think Jasper is at his most interesting as “the vampire-y one”  and that, if not for his gift, he’d probably find vampires hunting humans as natural as a shark killing fish or a lion killing a gazelle. It’s just how nature made them, there’s no moral code involved necessarily. But since he DOES feel his victims’ emotions, it gets ~complicated.  

Likewise I’m personally not on board the “Jasper struggles because he feels everyone else’s thirst” train either, a) because thirst isn’t an emotion (although he probably does feel emotions associated with it like shame, desperation, regret, whatever, that could make self-control a bit harder) and b) if he were that sensitive to thirst-as-thirst, how the heck would he have been a useful lieutenant for Maria during the newborns wars, or such a good fighter, surrounded by dozens of ravenous newborns!? Like I get that being around the self-denying Cullens could be stressful for him emotionally but the never-quite-satisfied-thirst of vegetarians can’t be worse than literally constantly ravenous newborns. He describes his time with them as an environment of hate, not thirst. IDK I just think Jasper is more interesting when he is just Bad at this because of his vampiric upbringing and not his gift, and that he owns it and is working on it. And when it was just a papercut, it was only Jasper and Edward (and him only because Bella is specifically his singer) who reacted–the other Cullens didn’t get ‘ravenous’ until Bella’s arm was sliced open by broken glass, and even then Carlisle didn’t react at all. So if anyone’s thirst (or emotions related to that thirst) set him off, it was only Edward. But I don’t think Jasper would see it that way even if it were true? Instead of making excuses for himself (’I struggle because I feel other people’s thirst”) he’d think of it more as “I should be strong enough to resist either way.”

Bloom is tied to the dragon flame so that is predetermined, but she could call herself something else if she wanted to hide it. Lynpheans have rich soothing voices, usually deeper toned with long pauses. Zenithians are snappy, not because they’re mad, but because they are quick and efficient and taking time to breath isn’t really a concept for them. Melodians vary a lot, but all have a very clear, crisp, almost ringing way of speaking. Solarians are loud and quick, usually mid to high range tones. Dominians speak a lot with their throat (think scotish/israli) and have mid range tones. Andros has a lilting (think japanese....weirdly enough) pattern of speech, and their talking speed varies HEAVILY based on their mood @its-all-about-that-fan 17. so Bloom has the great dragon which might be a natural source or might be more etheral but idk. But she would probably use a flame or lava related source. Stella is almost basically able to use danix because of her family’s reliance on the second sun of solaria, so she would probably use that. Aisha would be a major fairy wind and water, so like a cliffside source. Flora would probably use nature in general(like diana) or specifically a source of trees and forests. Musa would probably use the caves under the golden auditorium, and be the major fairy of sound. Tecna could connect to the core of zenith and be the major fairy of electricity and mechanism.  18. mostly good? like every family has its issues.  musa is close to her dad, and he’s come around to supporting her music career but theres still some unspoken hurt there for both of them. Aisha isn’t super close with her parents, as she’s grown up shes tried to get to know them as people, but she still holds bitterness over them isolating her for most of her childhood.  tecna is, by zenithian standards, outrageously close with her parents, which by other standards is decently close. They can go pretty long with out speaking tho it wouldnt be weird to them.  flora is closer to her mom than her dad, not that she doesn’t love him or anything its just she has more in common with her mom.  Stella loves both her mom and dad, and if its just the two of them with out the other parent she has a great relationship, as soon as radius and luna interact tho Stella ends up feeling torn and hurt and guilty. She’s trying to stop blaming herself but that would release her deep seated anger towards both her parents for putting her through that. Bloom still feels a little awkward with her bio parents, but tries to spend every other week on domino when she’s not on a mission or at alfea. She spends the other week on earth. Mike and Vanessa are always pretty flexible with Bloom’s magical oddities, and they encourage her to spend time on domino. Bloom will always have a place with them, but now that she’s essentially moved out, they’re thinking about adopting another kid.

SPOILER-Y DISCUSSION OF CAPTAIN MARVEL, INCOMING:

I figure the best way to do this is chronological; my prior attempts have not been chronological, which might account for their feeling a little...all over the place and unorganized.

This will also be a good test to see how much of the film I remember.

RIGHT THEN: First and foremost, (and we gleaned this from the trailers, obviously) MEMORY-LOSS PLOT. Which is Classic Carol™. She’s lost her memory like. Four times.

All of this to say: The premise of the movie, a kind of reverse origin story in which Carol figures out who she is, in a very literal but also figurative sense, was a great way to go, IMO.

Love all the moments from Carol’s past. I was admittedly surprised that we didn’t get more of that? But what was there was effective and given the amount of ground the movie had to cover, I think it was sufficient.

So after the dreams** we get the early morning fight with Yon-Rogg (who I was absolutely certain was Yon-Rogg, in spite of all the back and forth speculation and Marvel attempting to ‘hide’ his identity) and there’s exposition, obviously, and the set up of Carol’s struggle with Yon-Rogg’s forced Kree values clashing with Carol’s humanity but MORE importantly...

PHOTON BLASTS.

Love the way they render the energy pulsing just below the surface of her skin. Looks so cool. 

Then: Chit Chat Time with The Great Intelligence!

I thought for sure it was gonna be Helen Cobb.

Favorite Visual #1: The slow pan of Starforce and the excellent shot of Carol’s helmet as they swim to shore on Torfa.

The whole rescue mission sequence/Carol’s kidnapping is...Truly a Highlight, in my opinion.

Okay what month of 1995 does Captain Marvel take place in? Because I was honestly offended that no one, and I mean NO ONE made a Buzz Lightyear joke re: Carol’s outfit and being a member of STARCOMMANDFORCE who checks her wrist communicator to try and make contact.

(Toy Story came out in November so if this takes place in the summer I GUESS I will let it slide.)

But otherwise dug all of the 90s references.

(Also, train chase was great but I’m trying to save time though I do feel inclined to mention Kelly Sue DeConnick! Bringing some quality side eye! Very nice.)

Young Fury + Carol = excellent buddy cop combo, 14/10 would take an entire spinoff of their wacky 90s road trip adventures.

‘You look like someone’s disaffected niece’ might be favorite line in the film.

Let’s pause for a moment and appreciate the score, shall we? Pinar Toprak CRUSHES IT; the Captain Marvel theme feels like something out of The Rocketeer but with about 400% more sci-fi synth and I LOVE IT.

**Love the piece of score played when Carol wakes up. (Appropriately titled “Waking Up” I think, on the soundtrack.)

I also like the songs they picked for the movie? This is probably the complaint I’ve seen most often, that they feel obvious and easy, but. I dunno. I was never expecting something like Guardians of the Galaxy? So I wasn’t mad about it. 

(In related news, I’ve been listening to “Connection” on repeat ever since the special look trailer dropped.)

MAR-VELL iS A WOMAN

LIKE THIS WHOLE TIME. EVERYONE WAS SO FOCUSED ON JUDE LAW. And then there was that blip, right before the release, when Annette Bening revealed she was the Great Intelligence, again after months of secrecy so we were all like, HA we know the TWIST.

BUT NO. NO WE DID NOT.

Well played, Marvel. Well played.

This was something I was thinking about before the film came out; I just kind of assumed, because of the lack of an apparent ‘Mar-Vell,’ that Carol would be the first and only Captain Marvel in the MCU. And she basically is, b/c we have no indication that Dr. Larson was moonlighting as a superhero, but regardless this is SO COOL. SUCH A GOOD TWIST.

(A quick Google search on how many ‘L’s are in Mar-Vell led to a serendipitous discovery: an article on the gender swap decision, and apparently it came very late in the game. Like. ‘Already looking at guys to play Mar-Vell’ late in the game. *insert themoreyouknow.gif here*) 

Right, okay, back to Feelings:

When Carol’s like: You don’t know who I am! I don’t know who I am!

I was. Emotional.

(Brie Larson is perfectly cast and does a wonderful job.)

Maria’s pep talk? Also caused emotions.

And Maria got to come on the mission! I was pleasantly surprised, and really glad that the visit there wasn’t like. Just a pit stop, you know?

RIP Science Guy, we hardly knew ye.

Again, jumping ahead, but may I just say: It was truly an Experience, watching this movie with folks who had no idea what a ‘Flerken’ was.

Both my friends at the first screening I attended, and then like. Half the theater at the second one. XD

The whole row was like: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT when the tentacles came out.  

So yeah, Talos and the 180 on the REAL villains: Nice. The enduring complaint leveled at the MCU is a lack of compelling villains. (I guess Talos technically doesn’t count as a villain by the end of this, but. We’re going with it.) And Carol’s commitment to helping the Skrull refugees lifts plot elements from my favorite portion of the DeConnick run, so. YEP. LOVED IT.

(I was also trying to determine if Talos’ daughter was perhaps meant to be like. a Tic expy. Did it say ‘Tic’ on the pinball machine? Or ‘Tig’? Or something else entirely?)

I love the black and green, admittedly, and the helmet looks SO GOOD for being something that should be ridiculous, but my go-to answer for superhero costume design is: add a leather jacket.

So I had to explain that YES, Kara Danvers had the last name Danvers first, but she was adopted, and her GIVEN fake name was Linda Lee, so in all fairness, the same-name thing is a little less plagiarize-y, b/c ‘Linda Lee Danvers’ does not necessarily match up as well as ‘Kara Danvers’--which wasn’t even used until really recently--to ‘Carol Danvers’. ...Honestly, I was just really happy they called out the connection MY WORK HAS NOT BEEN IN VAIN XD )

Also, I sometimes get replies on posts like this which is totally fine BUT, I would ask that folks keep really spoiler-y stuff out of ‘em. At least for a little while.

I wrote this post, like, a year and a half ago but I just found it so here I’m throwing it into the void!

Okay, I have no justification of any kind, other than “the other night I rearranged my room, saw my mlp toys on my Percy Jackson shelf, and decided to debate with myself about “if the MLP cast were all in the PJO Universe, who would their godly parent be?”.” 

Obviously they’re all Humans, or well, Demigods, in this AU(Actually, there’s one Mortal), instead of being ponies(I think by default horses are Poseidon territory). That said, their in-show abilities/traits count for what I choose. Same for choosing the ‘godly parent’, meaning that while full Myth(and my interpretations) will be in play, how the gods work in the PJO books count as well. 

I’m also keeping to just the more well-known gods/goddesses. Because while there’s a lot of minor ones and I could probably spend days going down the rabbit hole of Wikipedia articles to find a ‘perfect fit’, why would I do that? For that same reason, I’m also sticking to Greeks instead of trying to balance ‘should I make them Greek or Roman?’. 

So! On that note, this is mostly a list, however, I do add more and give reasons for my choices, even talking of ones I debated about. And a few bonus headcanons.

Twilight Sparkle - I feel like Athena is the obvious choice. I mean, Twi’s intelligent and strategic so Daughter to the Goddess of Wisdom is a good idea, plus she has a pet owl which is one of Athena’s symbols. It’s what most people go with.

However, I’m going with her as a Daughter of Hecate. My reasons?

 First of all, Hecate is Goddess of Magic, and, well, Magic is Twi’s thing. She’s a talented spellcaster, and that’s a big part of her character.

Hecate is also a Goddess of Crossroads, something we see a lot with Twilight, in multiple ways.

She is the character with the most ‘counterparts’, not just her literal Counterpart in Sci-Twi, but metaphorical counterparts, ‘other paths she could have taken’. I mean, there’s Sunset, Starlight, Sci-Twi, Trixie, and also Moondancer that show off places Twilight could have ended up had she chosen differently in life. 

However, Twilight is also the Crossroad for others. She is the character who is trying to lead others down the best path, giving them the choice of where to go. Again, we see this a lot with reforming villains. She offers them a chance to change the path, to turn and go down another. 

Another thing that Hecate is associated with is childbirth and nurturing the young. 

In the show, Twilight earned her Cutie Mark by hatching Spike, and even if she wasn’t his direct mother(I headcanon them more as siblings), she did help to raise him. 

She’s also a teacher, both in usual subjects (as we saw with the CMC in Twilight Time), and in teaching others about friendship(While those characters are not ‘young’, it counts).

Pinkie Pie - Again, it seems like an obvious choice as a Daughter of Dionysus, God of wine, parties, and madness. Okay, we have no idea how Pinkie feels about wine since this is a kids show(Personally, I feel like she shares my tastes and doesn’t care for it.)

Which is why I’m making her a Daughter of Apollo instead. He’s God of the Sun, and Pinkie is a metaphorical ball of sunshine. Other things Apollo is the God of include: Healing, Music, Art, Archery, and also Prophecy.

Pinkie’s relation to Music and Art are obvious, and while we don’t get to see her with a bow, she seems to have good aim. As for Prophecy? Pinkie Sense. She’s canonically able to predict the future. 

Now, you might not think Healing fits in, but it does. After all, isn’t Laughter the best medicine? Okay, jokes aside, while Pinkie isn’t a ‘healer’ in the doctor sense, she’s more like a ‘healer’ in the therapist sense(Obviously not licensed, but you get the idea). When she can’t cheer someone up from just a simple party, she puts her all into working through their problems and getting them to be truly happy again. And that’s a type of healing people forget about alot.

Rarity - Huh. Another one that gets a ‘this has an obvious choice’ category. A Daughter of Aphrodite, Goddess of Beauty, Love and Lust, able to charm any into doing what she wishes. And in terms of the PJO world? She’d fit right in with the others of the Aphrodite Cabin(Well, she’d probably punch Drew in the face but whatever.).

However, once more, I’m going for an odd choice: Daughter of Hades. And before I go into my reasoning, take all the memories of Hades as a villain and anything from Disney and chuck that out a window. Not just here, but in general. Because damn it, he’s not evil. He’s probably one of the most chill of the gods. Stop making him the villain. Even this series only used him as a fakeout villain in the first book. And we don’t talk about the movie. What movie? That doesn’t exist!

Anyway, while Hades is God of the Underworld, he also has a few other things he rules. Hades is also known as the God of Wealth, as all of the precious metals and gems in the Earth were of his domain as well. Rarity and her ability to manipulate Gems reminds me a little bit of Hazel’s abilities(though obviously less cursed(And I know Hazel is technically ‘Pluto’s’ but they’re both the same god and not the same god)).

However, there’s a few other things that made me decide to have Rarity be a Daughter of Hades instead of Aphrodite:

First is the fact that, as much as Aphrodite was a good fit for her in quite a few ways, she is also considered a Goddess of Desire(not just Lust, but all desires and even the fulfillment of said desires). As materialistic as Rarity can be, she’s also the Element of Generosity. While the MLP universe can balance the traits, making her want things but always giving to others as well, putting Desire in her nature feels wrong.

Secondly, within the PJO series, Hades is shown to be very generous, even if it’s a trait rarely seen by the other gods(due to family feuding), but is shown in his relationships with the women he loved.

His love with Persephone, for example. He was kind and patient with her, wishing for her to love him as he did her. He started with magnificent gifts,and took to spending all of his time with her and doing whatever he could to make her happy. He even hired the most skilled (deceased) gardeners in the Underworld to grow a magnificent garden for her. He says that though he is God of Wealth, she is dearer to him than any precious metals or gems.

(Because I know someone will point it out, the whole thing with their relationship and the pomegranate seeds has several interpretations, some happier than others. The PJO version has Persephone truly fall for Hades, and one of the gardeners tricks her with the pomegranate seeds. (My personal interpretation of the story is that Persephone fell for Hades and ate the Pomegranate seeds on purpose so that they wouldn’t be separated. I mean, within actual Greek Myths, they’re the most stable couple with the least affairs))

Back to the books, we have Maria di Angelo. Hades tried to convince her to live in Underworld with him, despite the fact that it would piss off Persephone a bit, to protect her and their kids from the other gods. He insists that he will build her a beautiful golden palace by the River Styx, but doesn’t get a chance to because Zeus kills her first. (He wishes to resurrect her, but even a God of the Underworld must obey the laws of Death.)

While it’s technically ‘Pluto’ and not ‘Hades’, we also have Marie Levesque. He loved her so much he swore on the River Styx to give her anything. When she took him up on that and asked for all the riches of the Underworld, he begs her to ask for anything else, as the greediest wishes come with curses. And even though she ignored the warning and cursed their daughter, he did what he could to protect them. 

Another reason is that I find that most interpretations of the afterlife are Generous, in a way. While there’s definitely punishment in the afterlife, most versions include some version of ‘unless you’re a huge dick you’ll be rewarded with everything that would make you happy’. 

Final reason: the fanfic “In the Twilight of Death” which includes Rarity as a Grim Reaper. It doesn’t really factor in ‘logically’, but tbh I can’t help it. That fic’s good though so check it out.

Applejack - While it’s obvious, I’m not going to pull what I did before and be like ‘this is obvious but..’ thing. Applejack would be a Daughter of Demeter. Goddess of Agriculture and Harvest and all that.

Rainbow Dash - I debated about this one for a while. I thought of using Ares(Rainbow’s middle name is ‘Fight Me’), Zeus(Because God of Sky and Lightning), and even Iris(Because Goddess of the Rainbow).

However, I ended up deciding on her being a Daughter of Nike, Goddess of Victory, Strength, and Speed. It fits quite well. 

Fluttershy - Daughter of Iris. While I considered this for Rainbow Dash, I feel Iris fits Fluttershy more because of the version in the books. I mean, non-violent, only attacks in self defense, a little with the hippie crowd, severely underestimated due to their most known traits(Iris is known for messages and rainbows, Flutters is known for being kind and shy) but will totally kick your ass when needed.

Sunset Shimmer - Okay, I really want to put Hestia, because I associate Sunset with Hestia a lot because of reasons. But apparently Hestia has no kids as she’s one of the Virgin Goddesses. I’m really trying to think of other options. Like

Hecate, because like Twilight she’s Magic

Apollo, because of the Sun connection, good with her hands(art and music)

Athena, because she’s intelligent and strategic

Hephaestus, because she could totally build magic robots(Again, good with her hands) and also fire association

But just.... none of them feel right.

Fuck it! I don’t fucking care. Let’s just pretend that Hestia is like Athena, she creates children through other means and is still an eternal virgin. IDK, maybe they spawn out of her hearth fires. Anyway, Sunset’s a Daughter of Hestia.

Celestia and Luna - I’m putting them together because their headcanons are a bit connected. Okay, so, in this AU they’re either half-sisters or adopted. Celestia is a Daughter of Apollo(because Sun), but Luna is a Mortal.

However, because they’re always together, and because Luna can see through the Mist, she knows all about the whole ‘Demigods’ thing. But this puts Luna in a lot of danger, and Celestia insists she be allowed to come to CHB too so she can protect herself.

Obviously they don’t allow it since Luna’s Mortal, but Celestia decides that instead she’ll train Luna with all the Greek weaponry herself. 

At some point, they’re off on their own somewhere and end up running into some monsters. They handle it beautifully, and catch the attention of Artemis. She invites them both to join her Hunters, which they agree to. Luna took to the life better, being nocturnal and seeming to almost be able to see through the darkness, so she quickly became the Hunters’ Lieutenant

Discord - Son of Eris. Come on. That one’s too perfect.

Chrysalis - Daughter of Aphrodite. Again, kinda perfect on that one.

Cadence -  Can we go three for three on perfection? Yes, because here’s another Daughter of Aphrodite.

Shining Armor - I was debating on this, because he and Twilight are siblings so how should this work? I don’t want him to also be a son of Hecate. So they’re step-siblings on the Mortal side in this AU

I was also debating on whether to make his godly parent Ares or Athena. On one hand, while both are war/battle gods, Athena has a heavier emphasis on strategy. On the other hand, Athena also has heavier emphasis on her non-battle qualities.

Not to disrespect any character and/or gods, but while Shining is intelligent and a good strategist, he doesn’t fit the rest of the Athena kid qualities. So I’m making him a Son of Ares, though a bit more strategic and less bloodthirsty than his godly half-siblings(he gets it from his mom’s side of the family).

Spike - Son of Hephaestus, and definitely has those fire powers. While his character isn’t known for building, I think he could have some skill with it. As for his relationship to Twilight and Shining in this AU: He was adopted by their Mortal Parents. I’ll go more into that later.

Sweetie Belle - Rarity’s half-sister, on the mortal side. Daughter of Apollo. She sucks at healing and if you value your life keep her away from the bows, but her music skill is fantastic. Her prophecy abilities only show up when she’s being sarcastic.

Scootaloo and Flash Sentry - Full siblings(because I headcanon them as such in-show). Children of Athena. An odd choice, but I think it works. We know Flash is a Guard in-show, meaning he’s likely good with fights, and if Scootaloo had a middle name it’d be ‘fight me’, but both have also shown some craftsmanship abilities. Well, Scoots has(working on her scooter and all(also, you have to be smart to calculate those tricks yourself)) and I headcanon that Flash has shown those type abilities as well because the show gives him so little character that anything with him is ‘canon until proven otherwise’ and- Whatever. Rant for another time. 

Big Macintosh - Full sibling with Applejack. Son of Demeter. Self-explanatory.

Applebloom - Daughter of Hephaestus(AJ and Big Mac are her step-siblings in this AU). I chose this because all expected her to get a Cutie Mark for, well, building shit in general. (I’m still a little salty there)

Starlight Glimmer - Daughter of Nemesis, Goddess of Justice/Vengeance/Balance. You can figure out that one on your own.

Diamond Tiara - Either a Daughter of Hades,or another example of me saying ‘fuck it!’ and making her a Daughter of Hestia like Sunset. I am undecided. 

Have a few more headcanons for this AU:

This all would be post-PJO series, because a few things would vary a lot from Canon if it were during-series.I mean, Hades can only loophole kids into the series so many times before someone snaps. Also Luna becoming the Hunter’s Lieutenant would involve Thalia either dying or stepping down. And I want this to be when minor gods/goddesses have their own cabins too, and perhaps CHB has established something similar to New Rome where adult Demigods can just chill(Or Percy said ‘fuck you let us have a safezone to chill as adults’ and had some friends help buy a horse ranch in the middle of bumfucknowhere for people to set up their own town of Demigods. Because I’m pretty sure summer camp has an age limit.)

As for ages, most of them would be the ages I usually headcanon for them: Mane 7(And Flash) are 16-19, younger siblings(And Diamond) are 13/14, older siblings(and Starlight) are in early twenties. Might drop Celestia/Luna/Discord/Chrysalis down to early twenties too. 

I mean, age is irrelevant, as I’m not writing a story with them at these ages. I’m just giving the ages relevance to one another. 

Oh! So, I mentioned the whole Twilight, Shining, and Spike thing and how all that goes down. 

So, Twilight and Shining’s Mortal parents are their in-show parents. Velvet met Ares during her ‘rebel phase’ and had a one-night-stand that resulted in Shining. Night Light met Hecate and had a bit more of a relationship, but it was only a few nights and then she ‘stopped texting back’, allowing him to move on. He soon met Velvet and they fell in love. Then one night Hecate knocks on his door, drops newborn-Twilight into his arms and is like ‘Hey, I had a kid, she’d yours. I can’t take care of her or stay in your life. Bye!’. Despite the confusion, Velvet sticks by him and they get married. Also, imagine that itty bitty Shining pretty much thought Hecate was ‘the stork’ until sex-ed classes. 

Anyway, while both kids are showing various abilities(Some more concerning than others. Shining is the embodiment of ‘Let me see what you have...’ ‘A knife!’), their parents don’t know about Demigods or anything. Just that their kids have powers. They convince them to keep it all secret, which works for a while. Until one year on the last day of school. At the time, Shining’s 11 and in 5th grade, Twi’s 6 and in 1st grade. Spike happens to be going to the same school, though he doesn’t run into them often because he’s in Kindergarten. Spike’s story is that he’s an orphan, his bio mom having either disappeared or abandoned him. The adults weren’t sure about his age but stuck him in Kindergarten(we later find out he’s actually 4 at this time, but he’s a smart kid so he didn’t struggle through it). 

As I said, it’s the last day before summer break(because of course it is), when a monster manages to herd the three of them into an empty classroom. They fight the thing off well enough. Luckily, one of their teachers happened to be one of CHB’s undercover people(maybe a Satyr or a former camper). Unluckily, their teacher has to take them on the run since more monsters are chasing them. 

During their ‘on the run to camp’ time, Twilight and Shining bond with Spike a lot. They all get to camp, and get to properly message their parents(AKA give mom and dad another heart attack because phones are banned but rainbows work fantastic!), and essentially get the rundown on the whole Demigod business. 

Unfortunately, they get separated pretty quick. All three get Claimed, and sent to different cabins. While they slowly get used to sleeping so far apart and do end up making some friends with other campers, they stubbornly refuse to be separated. People try, but it’s hard to argue with the guy with a perfect intimidating stare and knife collection, the girl who has little issue spellcasting when angry, and the toddler with fire powers. 

By the end of the first summer, Twilight and Shining don’t want to leave Spike behind. I mean, his two options are either becoming a year-round camper, or going back into the foster care system. They talk to their parents about it, and it doesn’t take much convincing for them to legally adopt Spike into the family.

Oh, another family thing I’d have to talk about is Pinkie and her family. I’m not quite sure how though. Maybe she’s adopted by them at some point? I don’t usually like making Pinkie the ‘adopted’ one, but I’d kind of have to since she’s third oldest and that’s better than the alternatives. But I don’t think any of her sisters are Demigods. 

Her relationship with the Cakes though! I headcanon differently. So, I’m gonna bump up the twins to elementary school age(7). Anyway, the twins are also Demigods(children of Hermes). Someone’s probably asking ‘uh, wouldn’t that involve an affair?’. Well, I’m just going to go with either 1.)Mr. and Mrs. Cake weren’t together yet or 2.) open relationship?

Anyway, Pinkie met them two years ago. She happened to be hanging in the park near their bakery(because they still own a bakery in this au). The twins go to the park a lot after school, usually with one parent supervising the playground. This time, however, a monster attacks. Since Pinkie was nearby, she leaped into action. She manages to get the cakes to run off, and follows because the monster seems more intent on the easier kill(Aka, she can’t lure it away). 

Eventually, she manages to kill the beast, and the twins are scared but think she’s a superhero. She correctly guessed that Mr. Cake isn’t their bio dad, and asks if there’s been any other ‘incidents’, either attacks or unexplained things happening. She does decide to tell them the truth, showing off her own powers to prove it. After that sinks in, she tells them about CHB, and how it can keep the twins safe, and teach them to defend themselves. 

At first, they’re against it, as they really don’t want their kids to learn something so dangerous. But Pinkie sticks around to protect them, walking them from school in the afternoons and babysitting when they want to go to the park. Monster attacks and weird things become a bit more frequent(mostly because now the Cakes now about this, and also Pinkie can testify that it wasn’t ‘small children with overactive imaginations’).

 So they ask Pinkie about CHB again, how safe is it? She assures them that it’s safe, and that if they want, they can do it just for the summer, pretend it’s a normal summer camp. So yeah, after the school year ends they let Pinkie play navigator and drive to camp. Pinkie helps them with the sign-in process(since Mortals aren’t usually allowed in and she doesn’t have the authority yet), and both Pumpkin and Pound have been going to CHB for the summer since. Pinkie still sticks with them during the other months, protecting, babysitting, and making sure they keep their skills sharp(which terrifies their parents because, uh, you are dual-wielding swords to battle small children??), but they’re happy and safe and Pinkie’s grown on them, so they’re good with it!

I don’t think I have any more specific headcanons on how the others found out/how they got to camp.

episode 7:

this opening scene is The Literal Cutest. also You Will Notice that they’re sitting/standing next to each other a lot more and since i have a degree in ships standing next to each other i can say this is Good. also saki’s Disaster Lesbian title comes out here but like. specifically the Disaster part because she has No Idea what to do but i’m still proud of her. not much actual interaction tho, it’s more like an open group discussion minus ai & junko. 7/10 it makes me smile 

this isn’t Really an interaction between them but like. Sakura Is Saki’s Right Hand Man. ai acknowledges this and So Do I. also they’re standing next to each other again. 6/10 this is actually an exchange between ai and saki i just wanted to say again that sakura is saki’s right hand man thank u

episode 8: 

i missed the part where she pointed out where they were in the magazine but this is a super small thing (which is fine bc these episodes are focused on the other girls) but it’s really cute nonetheless i love how excited they all are!!!!! 3/10 i’ve seen better

i’m sad x100000000 the way saki reacts to this is with anger and that’s very on brand for her. i think she doesn’t know how to process her feelings about this whole situation, which is what’s making her so frustrated (along with sakura’s stubbornness), and she’s taking it out on sakura. i don’t have much to say about sakura here other than she’s just tryna be depressed and all these scary ass bitches are yelling at her!! i would snap at them too tb fucking h. also i will argue with you that saki cries after this scene in the japanese version (caitlin didn’t have the range). 100/10

episode 12:

STARTING THIS EPISODE OFF STRONG but there’s so little in this episode. anyway i Love this whole scene because 1. saki’s super fucking upbeat and it both feels like she’s trying to compensate for sakura and like she’s showing sakura how much fun she’s having to give sakura an idea of why she likes being in franchouchou!! 2. we actually meet some number 1 fans!!!! hard same!!! i too would like to shake sakura’s hand!!! and 3. sakura blushes after saki says that and i’m getting Very Specific vibes from saki that i can’t explain. 9/10

THE funniest part of the episode HANDS DOWN every time it cuts to sakura’s face i burst out laughing and i’ve seen this episode one million and one times 1000/10

saki’s way to help comfort someone is to just tell them “don’t worry about it it’ll be fine” and as much as i relate to her being bad at comforting her friends it’s still a no from me. 5/10

here’s what i think about the kiss and i’m not gonna say too much cuz i don’t want to get on a soapbox about this. 

if you disagree with me that’s fine, i’m not calling anyone out or talking about anyone in particular. idk what posts have been made i’m just making my own.

i think frank is healing. he’s trying to move on from the punisher days, the pain from maria, his kids etc. so him starting over as pete castiglione is a good sign. he is TRYING. maybe alexa is just a rebound, or maybe it’s him trying to start something good in his life. 

and whether we like it or not, karen is attached to that dark part. 

but hang on, what if alexa makes him realize that he is able to open up and be with someone else, and that can open the door for a real relationship with karen? maybe he doesn’t want to ruin it w/ karen. 

and furthermore, frank acts FAST. he married maria after three months lol (yes i know cuz she was pregnant but you can’t tell me homeboy didn’t love her the second he saw her) 

i think frank is just trying to heal and i’m happy to see him happy tbh even if it’s very brief. 

if you don’t like this or alexa YOU DON’T HAVE TO. but don’t send hate to the actors and try and have an open mind about the show cuz we have no clue what goodies lie in store. 

karen has an important role. that’s a fact, so don’t give up yet. 

and people are saying frank opens up to alexa too quickly, frank certainly opened up to karen and MATT rather quickly after not knowing them at all. growth and healing are about changing, so maybe frank is reading the situation and he feels safe enough to open up to her. 

also frank is never EXCLUSIVE to karen. i’m not denying their bond for a second. i think they have a DEEP connection, one of love and peace and being there for each other. but some time has passed. and if frank is in fact trying to heal, why would he not just TRY w/ someone else because karen isn’t there? that doesn’t mean she can’t be there in future eps! we don’t know cuz we haven’t seen the eps yet. 

and i want yall to read me here - at the end of the day im here for JON and seeing him kiss makes me happy because i like seeing him in more romantic and soft settings as well as the darker aggressive ones. and yall know that i’m more of a frank stan on his own that i am about any ships. this is just me thinking about his character. i could be totally wrong, and you can disagree all you want but this is my opinion and i’m sticking to it. 

i just don’t want yall to misread and think im hatin if you disagree, cuz that’s not what this is. if youre upset that it’s not karen THAT’S OK. if youre mad it’s not karen THAT’S OK. i’m more mild on the topic cuz i’m just happy to see frank again. 

so that’s what i think. we’ll see what happens next week.

{{ Book talk: Friend Request

I finished Friend Request by Laura Marshall today.

I don’t quite remember when I bought it but it was sometime during the beginning of the month of December. Jeff and I went to Fry’s and scanned the book section looking for any more Kay Hooper books, especially her Bishop novels. Anyway, there wasn’t any though I did see Christine Feehan! A few of her books, I saw Dark Fire and one of the Leopard books? I know I went and told Dot about it when I got back.

Here is the summary for this book: 1989. When Louise first notices the new girl, Maria seems to be everything the girls Louise hangs out with aren’t. Authentic. Funny. Brash. Within just a few days, Maria and Louise are on their way to becoming fast friends. 2016. Louise receives a heart-stopping email. Maria Weston wants to be friends on Facebook. Long-buried memories quickly rise to the surface: cruel decisions made and dark secrets kept, the night that would change all their lives forever.

As she tries to piece together exactly what happened that night, Louise discovers there’s more to the story than she ever knew.

I’m going to dive into the book but I’ll keep my thoughts below a cut just in case anyone who stumbles upon this doesn’t want to read on spoilers and stuff. I’ma be spoiling things. That’s the point of these talks. I want to TALK ABOUT THE BOOKS I READ AND SHIT.

First off, I don’t care about Louise. She’s a freaking weak character. She has a group of friends she hung out with in high school. She wasn’t too much of a popular kid but her “best friend”, Sophie, was even though Sophie was the one that seemed to be on the fringes of that popularity herself. Claire and some other chick were the true popular girls and Sophie used to be close with Claire until they started to push her out because you know, Sophie became a third wheel... in a group of girl friends. As you can imagine, it was a cliche catty thing. I didn’t care for that aspect but I guess it showed how terrible girls can be to one another.

Another aspect I should mention is that this author is British and this book, you can tell, is British. I didn’t mind it and although some terms/slang went over my head, it wasn’t hard to tell what things meant through the context and it was very little I ran into this problem as an American reader. Further, what caught my attention about this book was the genre of suspense and mystery. Maybe a little horror. I thought it would be like the horror movies with social media and being online, in book form. The cover looked interesting.

The tagline says “Maria Weston wants to be friends. But Maria Weston’s dead. Isn’t she?” And that’s the sort of premise of the story. Louise gets this friend request from her after many years after high school on Facebook and it’s so strange, as someone who is constantly on the Internet but over the whole “Facebook” phase to hear people talk about it like it’s this... Idk, cool thing to use when in actuality, the people that seem to use Facebook are the older generation and it seems that this is where the author fits the mold. She does hit the nail on the nose where she describes Facebook as this community where people put all of their business on it, but only the storybook and fairy tale aspects what everyone is happy to put on display for their friends and mutual to brag to. I think nearly everyone can attest to their family members using Facebook for things like this. My family does it and I think Dot’s does, too. The author does a good job emulating this in her universe. 

So, Louise gets this friend request from Maria who had been killed back in 1989, during prom night. The mystery about this is whether Maria is alive or not. Louise is a divorced mother by now, having married and had a son with a guy she loved in high school, Sam. But Sam cheated on her and eventually had another kid with the woman he left Louise for. One of the things that bothered me about this aspect is that it is never quite explained what the text message said Louise kept bringing up that caused their marriage to splinter. Things like that aren’t explicitly said but seems to be a very important detail. I get that he cheated on her, she read something that she wasn’t supposed to... or however it was described, but the fact that she never writes that detail in makes it an itch I couldn’t scratch. It bothered me. I wanted to know. I never found out what that stupid text message said.

I do like Louise’s son and the relationship she had with him. Henry was an adorable little child and I adored the way she described some of the scenes between mother and son. It gave me better insight on how to write interaction with children, something I don’t quite run into despite wanting to write interactions for Dot and her children.

Going back to Louise, I found it hard to sympathize with her because like I said before, I didn’t like her. I found that she was weak and always had been since high school. She was making decisions that would have me all “Girl, WHY” and wishing she had done things differently instead of the route she had taken. She wasn’t UNBEARABLE like some female protagonists, but she was... stupid. But I get that she was also fearful. She had been carrying around this “secret” of hers since high school, feeling responsible for Maria’s death.

I felt sorry for Maria since I brought her up. She was a new transfer to Louise’s school and at once was ostracized. The summary made it sound like she and Louise were friends but I felt that hardly happened. What happened was that she and Louise hung out about two major times; one was when Louise had been ditched by Sophie (who went to hang out with one of the popular girls and wasn’t even a real friend to her but Louise wanted so bad to fit in with these girls) at lunch and Louise and Maria hung out. Louise, in a sense, used Maria whenever she couldn’t hang out with Sophie. 

Maria had these rumors surrounding her as soon as she moved to a new school In actuality, she had a stalker. This stalker put out horrid rumors about her that ruined her reputation at her previous school and somehow, this new school. Some kid that went to that school had a cousin that attended this new school and that was how these rumors seemed to persist with Maria. It’s quite sad. She was the type that stood up for herself even though she was being treated horribly. She mouthed off to Sophie for treating her like shit and she was kind to Esther, an old friend of Louise that she ditched in order to hang out with Sophie and the popular kids. Maria was a character that you could have liked, instead, we got weak ass Louise and her inability to stand up for herself. In all fronts. The only time she did something that was strong was 1) when her son went missing and 2) when she was being choked near the end of the book. BUT SHE FAILED ALL THE OTHER TIMES TO BE A STRONG CHARACTER. I guess it’s meant to display a whole, every-day jane or something, but like... c’mon. How many chances do you get to rightfully apologize to someone for being a little shithead in your youth? She’s had so many times to apologize to Esther with how she treated her, explain and come clean with so many things, but she kept thinking of herself. She kept saying she felt bad and sorry and regretted everything she had done and how she treated people but it wasn’t until her ass was cornered and she had no other path to take that she RIGHTFULLY apologized or explained herself to the people she should have in the beginning. I felt if you were really that remorseful, you would have done so earlier.

So I didn’t quite blame Esther for feeling distrustful of Louise as she did throughout their encounters. I just thought Louise was a weak protagonist and hard to relate to. Or perhaps I felt too much sympathy for the characters who were done wrongly and came to resent Louise. Sophie was too fucking ridiculous to outright hate; I knew she was a bitch and didn’t care too much for her. She was awful. But Louise was supposed to be the main character you were supposed to be sympathetic towards. I COULDN’T DO IT, lmao.

I suppose I should talk about what I liked about the book. I mean, I only read it on my spare time--which was anytime I wasn’t doing things on my computer which meant cooking and occasionally sitting down with it. I wasn’t in a hurry to read it until that last stretch where Louise went to her high school reunion. I guess that meant it was sort of like a slow build or that just may be because I had been reading slowly. I wasn’t bothered by it, though. I wasn’t taken out of the story, I was able to dive back into it every time I picked it back up. The author’s writing voice seemed good too considering it was her first published book. It wasn’t quite my favorite type of writing style (the book was written in first person, too) but it wasn’t bad. Not at all. Just different. And there wasn’t too many romantic points in it; the romantic aspects I guess I could count were when Louise would speak about her marriage to Sam. How much they loved each other (how much she loved him because she honestly gave him everything). Sam was... something else. I won’t delve too much into his story; I mean, for as involved in the book as he was, I just... didn’t get too much of an impression of him. I didn’t like Sophie more than him and that’s hilariously weird considering the outcome.

The italic chapters, portions where it was written in someone else’s POV, were confusing and I can’t think... why it would be part of the story. I mean, from what I can remember and gather about those small chapters was that... it was in the past. They were hints, I’m going to assume, but they just felt out of place and distracting to me. I didn’t care of those small chapters.

The hints of BDSM also threw me a little. But that was probably because it was mingled in with abuse. So it wasn’t quite real BDSM practices. Just that... Sam was a piece of shit and there was signs Louise couldn’t see and she mistakenly pegged it as BDSM.

I honestly... don’t know what else to talk about this book now that I’ve expressed the little things that were bothering me and how I overall felt about it. It was a pretty... okay read. Not GREAT but it wasn’t bad either. It wasn’t what I was expecting but I wasn’t quite disappointed with what I got.
