Ultrastenos: Narrow Snouted Mekosuchine?

So this one comes with a pretty big disclaimer. Ultrastenos, evenmoreso than any other mekosuchine, is incomplete and enigmatic. Whereas animals like Mekosuchus at least bolster a long research history or at least somewhat complete remains of specific body parts, Ultrastenos is both new and fragmentary. This, combined with ongoing research, means that this reconstruction is just a preliminary one based on current publications and should not be taken as gospel.

Ultrastenos is best known through assorted skull fragments and crania, notably part of the quadrate and quadratojugal, the occiput (back of the skull), an incomplete lower jaw, misc. postcrania like a tibia and vertebrae and some referred skull tables.

Already we enter some weirdness as the type material all stems from the Low Lion Site of the Riversleigh WHA, while the skull tables are from the White Hunter Site (also Riversleigh). Tho they are roughly of the same age, both being late Oligocene, but they are still different localities.

As is apparent both from my recon and the mandible, the lower jaw of Ultrastenos constricted weirdly rapidly, broad at the back and yet narrow towards the front (thus its name, which just means "extremly narrow").

A key issue here is that we don't know how long the rostrum was. We only have it up to the fourth-last tooth, so how long the snout would have continued we don't know. The idea that the snout was short has been entertained, but is deemed unlikely given that the mandible is very shallow. This would instead be more in line with long-snouted animals like gharials.

Size is another point of question. The type material is very small, only about two meters is what I recovered and the paper notes it's "only about as big as a freshwater crocodile", which matches fairly well I'd say. But it is not known whether or not the specimen was actually an adult, so we may find larger individuals in the future.

Which brings us to the disclaimer.

In 2023's "Migrations, diversifications and extinctions: the evolutionary history of crocodyliforms in Australasia", the confusion and uncertainty of Ultrastenos is once more brought up. Some of what is written is what you'd expect, which is that it's enigmatic and the interpretations of Stein et. al. need more research. Logical so far, its undeniably fragmentary and the interpretation is undeniably speculative. The fact that its phylogenetic placement among mekosuchines is a mess is likewise not a surprise. The original tree differs A LOT from more recent results, while the only other tree that included Ultrastenos is that of Rio and Mannion, which I generally avoid personally.

But the interesting nugget is that apparently, a close relative has been found since then which might have a big impact. But this research is still in prep courtesy of Adam Yates (who I've been told will publish the description of the Alcoota Baru soon enough). So will my recon become obsolete? Probably. But I'll update it accordingly once the time comes.

But lets briefly let go of safety and scepticism and consider the possibility that it really was a long-snouted mekosuchine. Aside from some of the anatomical clues like the shallow mandible, sameish teeth and narrow snout, a longirostrine croc would be expected, from the region, would it not? After all, long snouts evolved many times separately in crocs and despite having an incredibly diverse croc fauna, Australia is shockingly lacking in those. The only examples currently known are the Miocene Harpacochampsa, the Pliocene to Pleistocene Gunggamarandu and the current freshwater crocodile. The former two are gharials the later a crocodylid.

Furthermore, the White Hunter Site, if you remember prior posts, was positively teeming with mekosuchines of all different niches. Large semi-aquatic predators like Baru, small semi-aquatic ones like "Baru" huberi and terrestrial forms like Mekosuchus and Quinkana. So to fit in, Ultrastenos must have done something differently, and conveniently a longirostrine nische is still open. So why not.

So that's it. Ultrastenos, the enigmatic, possibly longirostrine mekosuchine of the Riversleigh. Will this post age badly? Maybe, maybe not, we'll see. as ive said before, this doesnt count disney shows or clueless as i consider myself inherently biased towards those and dont find it fair to judge them against others. my fav disney shows tho are lion king, beauty and the beast, and newsies, and i do consider those + clueless favs

so i shuffled a few things. most notably, rent moved up 3 spots. i made a post about this i think a few months ago, that i was thinking about moving it up potentially that far and for me thats a big deal bc bronx tale's been sitting up at #3 for like 6+ years. i just think my rent brainrot is too substantial to be denied. it does have a bit of an unfair advantage as far as causing me to spend nights upon nights looking into its history as it HAS many more years of history than the other shows do, but i mean thats just the truth of the matter that cant be denied. i still love all those shows dearly, but i think rent has scratched a particular part of my brain and i need to give it its due credit. its one of my only hyperfixations thats really had me like actively hyperfixating in the last year or so.

i DID also see a live production of tick tick boom last year and i feel like i need to throw that into the mix but i need to give that more thought. i did love it but its also very different from the movie. it also has only 3 actors so comparing it to these shows with large ensemble casts is really difficult.

but hey at least i made some progress today

I was first introduced to the Skam universe through a remake, but I’m always so fascinated to find people who watched OG Skam first and then proceeded to watch most or all of the remakes even though they don’t really seem like big fans of the OG. So I’m curious—what drove you to watch remakes? Have you just grown more indifferent toward OG Skam over the years since you first watched or maybe you were hoping to see the remakes improve on it? (You can totally ignore this if you want to btw lol)

oh man anon you don’t even realize this but this is a question and a half for me skjnfskndfs i’m gonna try my best to keep things relatively basic and straightforward tho

so here’s the truth: og skam actually ranks among some of the most memorable shows i’ve ever seen. yes, i have a lot of criticisms of it. i had a lot of criticisms when i first watched it and i have even more now that i’ve had time and distance. but i also think og skam is one of the best made teen shows i’ve ever seen. the real time format, the transmedia aspect, the themes explored, the way the show really takes its time with its clips and its characters, how the show treats the issues its characters are going through seriously despite them being young characters [or perhaps in some ways because of that] - as much guff as i give julie andem i do believe she created something really special with og skam. and my favorite thing about it was always the format, which was notably one of the things remakes were contractually obligated to keep.

[worth noting i have a history of being into shows with a similar format, actually. a few years before skam i was really into literary adaptation vlogseries - if you’ve ever heard of the lizzie bennet diaries, think shows that fit that particular subgenre of online content - and many of them did things like create social media accounts for their characters that would update in real time and drop episodes in real time without intro music or credits to simulate “real life” vlogs. skam does many of the same things but, like, with more polish and a specific focus on creating stories for teenagers. my point is i was basically primed to enjoy shows in this format.]

so i think at least some of the appeal of the remakes was in the format of the show for sure. hm, what else what drew me to the remakes? i’ve always been kind of fascinated by, like, the meta of adaptations and the way they interact with the Canon and such. i mean i’ve been into fanfic for so long which i think speaks for itself, and also my interest in lit vlogseries was in large part because i loved seeing what choices writers would make to adapt old classics i already love and know for a new environment. like i just really find that kind of thing super interesting, to think of how new stories respond to their predecessors! so i find skamverse honestly a really, really fascinating thing to follow for that reason. i mean how often do you get to see a bunch of different teams try to adapt the source material for a new audience, arriving at different choices and conclusions in terms of how to adapt the same story, all at the same time? it’s so interesting to follow, i love seeing what parts of og canon new teams decide to keep and discard and update, i love seeing how the remakes being specifically for different cultures affect the writing, honestly it’s just all been very fun for me to follow.

also - probably helps that i was very, very invested in og seasons 3 and 4. always helps to actually be a fan of the characters and stories that are being adapted ad nauseam lol. admittedly i don’t like s1 as much [though i understand why it’s so beloved by this fandom!] and i dislike s2 so much that i’ve skipped out on most of the s2 remakes [although... not as many as you might anticipate skdjfnsdk] but i do feel that s1 is really important for establishing the themes and goals and characters of the show, which is why i’ve seen as many versions of it as i have.

Last thing i want to say is - yeah honestly another big reason is the opportunity the remakes present for telling more diverse stories than the og had the capability of telling. i was pretty lukewarm about the remakes up until skam austin started dropping and it was immediately apparent that they had adapted their eva into a girl of color and their isak into a black girl who might possibly be a lesbian, which sort of made me sit up and think, oh okay, there might actually a chance of getting to see characters i actually relate to more in the context of this show i love. are there other shows and other stories i can get well-written and diverse representation from? of course there are and there always has been, but it’s also nice to get those things from a franchise i already have a special place in my heart for [albeit a simultaneously quite complicated one].

tl;dr - i actually did [and still do, in many ways] have a special place in my heart for og skam; i’m a huge nerd about the Meta of it all; and it’s been really rewarding for me to see the remakes attempt to build on og skam in unique and diverse ways. i hope that makes sense, anon!

1- ACQUIESCENCE (Minato/Itachi) my first fic ever. darkish but just a little, angsty. I’m proud of it cause another author wrote a sequel to it.

 to ac·qui·esce: to accept, agree, or allow something to happen by staying silent or by not arguing. A flurry of leaves, swept away by the autumn wind, caught the Hokage's attention while he took off his large hat. That time of the year should have been warmer.

2- THE WILL OF FIRE (Shiita, Danzo/Shisui, Danzo/Itachi) This was dark and shiita fans didn’t like it lol.

 Just like his owner, Danzo's studio was dark and dusty. The man didn't look as old as Hiruzen, but he was twice as scary; thus would think a boy of Itachi's age. Not him. He was not allowed to be afraid.

3- WHAT HE WANTED (Itasasu) Even tho I rewrote it cause I didn’t like how I initially characterized them and their dynamics this is my most popular fic. Maybe because it’s a post-ending, canon divergent, fix-it kind of story. Maybe because it’s Itasasu and I put so much love into writing their dynamics and, also, in giving Sasuke a good ending since canon didn’t do him justice.

Sasuke is where everybody wants him to be: in Konoha. With the battle and the arm he also lost the urge to fight. He's had enough of traveling. He's tired of chasing and being chased. So tired that even if he meant every word about starting a revolution, being the Hokage and build a new era, he had wondered, though only for a moment, if he would be able to really accomplish such tasks all by himself.

4- IN POWER WE ENTRUST THE LOVE ADVOCATED (Itasasu) THis is my second most popular fic. This one too was written after the ending and tried to give Sasuke justice. I planned to write a sequel but I got busy with other projects and lost interest in it.

The gates open, letting the shinobi in after a successfully completed mission. Being on duty the following day Sasuke declines his team mates' proposal to have dinner together, the reddish sunset light forcing him to squint as he walks towards the Hokage's office.

5- PRESSURE (Itasasu) Taken from In Power that can be read as a standalone oneshot.

Itachi wakes up to the sound of pouring water.

6- IN DREAMS (Itasasu, Izuna/Sasuke, DARKFIC). This is one of the darkest things I wrote. The Izuna/Sasuke crackpair was for @admiral-izusasu. The plot, the dynamics, everything has a double, or triple reading, plot related and metaphorical for other, real-life issues such as knowing people online, and emotional abuse from narcissistic people. I wrote it when I was fighting against one of these psychos, on tumblr itself, so this fic has a personal meaning for me. But also the plot and the canon divergent ending thing is cool, I think it’s one of my best fics, even though I coulnd’t care less about izuna.

They say that nature will always find a way. After the end of the war flowers keep blooming like nothing happened even if the light is fainter, filtered from the tall branches of the Shinju tree, now grown into a forest spread all over the world.

7- SOMBER CREATION PALE DESTRUCTION (Madara/Sasuke dom/sub-ish). Darkish? Who knows, I write darkfish stuff all the time. I was (and am) very proud of this fic, the canon divergent turn it took (who am I kidding, it’s really cool lol) and the weird relationship/dynamics these 2 created. So I didn’t update it anymore, because doing so would break their thin balance. Ssssh, don’t tell me it doesn’t make sense, I don’t believe you xD

History teaches that Madara Uchiha died at the hands of Hashirama Senju. Their statues were erected in the Valley Of The End where their battle was fought, where the shinobi god ended his best friend's life in order to protect the village they founded together. No one knows that Madara didn't die there.

8- IN THE DARK (kakashi/Sasuke, mob/Sasuke noncon). This is a very dark oneshot that I’m proud of, cause it ‘explains’ canon Sasuke personality in Shinden and later, and that I use as prequel for many fics, like WHW but also OFAF and Broken Things (see later for both).

Things never went as Sasuke wanted. After the war it's no different, although everything seems fine at first, Team 7 finally at peace with each other, the war ended and the village that Itachi protected, even as a dead man, safe. Nevertheless he is arrested when he's still in the hospital.

9- VICTIMS OF PEACE (Shisui/Sasuke dom/sub-ish) I am so proud of this fic, of its non massacre universe, of the dark-ish slow burn relationship between Shisui and Sasuke I wrote, tentatively at first cause no one did it or thought much about it, and because that non massacre filler was bad, but still it was inspiration. I know shiita fans hated me even more for this cause shisui is only paired with itachi, and also itachi/itasasu fans were disappointed but still. This is maybe the fic I’m most proud of.

If a traveler arrived from a random village in the Fire Country he would certainly notice how different Konoha was. He would not be able to pinpoint exactly why at first, because the buildings, houses and shops are similar, just like their gardens, fields and animals. Only after some thought he would understand that the difference is in their people: other villagers are relaxed and casual, even loud. Children run around the streets, chasing each other, playing tag or hide-and-seek. Their fathers bring them presents and their mothers buy them new clothes.

10- OF FEATHERS AND FANGS (DARK Narusasu) I received a lot of hate for this one, which makes me proud of it even more. so many naruto stans were butthurt by my characterization of him as a possessive not sunshine selfless boy and their dynamics as crazy.

Jiraiya used to complain that the first sign of getting old was waking up at night for no reason and not being able to fall back asleep. For Naruto, this only happened after the war.

11- BLACK ROSES (Itasasu, dom/sub-ish) Smutty Bloody Darky Hokage Itachi/Anbu Sasuke oneshot

Because of his farsighted politics, his loyalty towards his allies as well as his iron fist against his enemies, Itachi quickly became one of the most respected leaders in the shinobi world, and because of his unequaled diplomatic skills, along with his vast culture, impeccable manners and refined appearance, he became popular among nobles, including the Daimyo, whose official visits increased since the Uchiha rose to power.

12- NELL’IPOTESI GRANDE (=IN THE BIG HYPOTHESIS) (MetaMoro, not Naruto) I’m very proud of this one cause it’s a psycho-pass inspired longfic set in a retrofuturistic Italy with a totalitarian consumeristic regime. But that fandom is so shitty and they all hate me cause I called them homophobic fascists so no one cares. The excerpt is translated too.

He’s reminded of Pirandello’s* words as he’s riding the automatic taxi across the city, exiting the center towards EUR. COmpared to Milan with its skyscrapers, multilevel streets, automatic cars and incessant novelties, the capital is basically the same as it was portrayed in old illustrations: renaissance and 20th century buildings, seagulls, pines among the Roman ruins, sycamore trees on the Lungotevere, that was probably already busy with traffic when people travelled on horse carriages. 13- DA UOMO A UOMO, MANO NELLA MANO (from man to man, hand in hand) (Metamoro) lol I was hated a lot for this one too. tbh the hate I received in the Naruto fandom is nothing compared to this other shitty fandom

For an artist like Fabrizio, mainly focused on expressing what he has inside, public relations are the hardest part of his job, especially when it’s about events where, instead of fans, of whom he perceives the sincere affection, other artists and professionals are invited. His experience taught him that most of them are hypocrites ready to jump on the winner’s bandwagon as quickly as to throw mud at the loser.

14- STRENGTH THROUGH WOUNDING (wip) (Obito/Sasuke, Obito/Itachi, dark.-ish) 

There is something nostalgic in the eerie way the boy's screams resonate through the dark cavern-like hideout, their pain bouncing from one curved wall to another, their anguish filling their crevices. It’s like hearing his past self from an external perspective, like Madara did. Which is fitting, for Obito is Madara now.

15- WORDS UNSAID (wip) (Kakashi/Sasuke) 

A black flame that cannot be extinguished: they had been warned about Amaterasu by Jiraiya, but seeing it was impressive nevertheless. The whole area was surrounded by black flames and the rain pouring hard could nothing against it. They found Sasuke there, surrounded, imprisoned by black flames that were extinguishing themselves, so they found a breach.

16- BLEEDING ME (Metamoro vampire/priest darkfic) No one can understand this in the Naruto fandom but it’s an AU interpretation of the Da UOMO A UOMO character dynamics where one is an emotional vampire-like person. I’m very proud of this fic tbh.

According to folk stories the forest was so big and full of dangers that God himself put a church where it ended, so that its priest would protect the people living nearby. It was a small, white building that didn’t match the typical stones and wood brownish ones of that region, with no stained glass windows or fancy columns, spires or gargoyles, only crosses with skulls and bones, and an engraving in an unknown language.

17- WILD CHILD (Metamoro cop/drug dealer AU). At this point I hate that fandom so much but I like my ideas and I write only for my girl whom I met in that very shitty fandom.

Everything seems bigger in children’s eyes. Like the playground in the courtyard of the church, with its slides and swings that for Ermal’s siblings were the setting of countless imaginary adventures which they told him in detail, enthusiastically interrupting each other, when he picked them up after school.

18- TRUE COLORS (Itasasu, dark, dom/sub) By now I’m only interested in writing dark IS and I enjoyed writing this one lol

In the Land of Water summers were hot and damp, autumn and spring were damp for the frequent rains and winter was no less, with its cold temperature and ubiquitous dampness. It wasn't a problem for Sasuke though.

Sitting in your window seat, wearing a beautiful black dress that complimented your figure, staring out into the large back garden of your family’s manor, you sigh deeply, thinking about what today would bring. It was nearly dusk now, nearly time.

You, a 10th generation witch, were now 20, of age to perform the magic spell that every single woman in your family had on their 20th birthday. It was a spell that would summon a demon that you would be bound to, exchanging something for wealth and power, to continue the family's status. You had been told to wish for a rich CEO husband, so that you could continue your family line with enough money. Your mother was ruthless about this, having been telling you this was your destiny since long ago, likely since before you could remember. 

A knock came at your door before it opened, one of your young cousins from a “lesser branch of the family”, coming into your room to tell you it was time for the ceremony. You couldn’t even remember their name, since you hadn’t really spent any time with her, or any of your cousins. You were the first born daughter, so you had been treated differently by everyone. Sometimes, though, you wished you had been born as the first born boy, and didn’t have to take on this responsibility. 

Standing, you nodded, walking past her without looking at her, “Thank you…” you whispered softly, knowing if you were caught talking to her by your mother, you’d likely be punished. She hung her head low, but you caught her small smile. 

Going into the dining hall, you find your mother and grandmother standing there, in front of the door that lead to the cellar of the house, where all spells such as this were to be performed.

“You’re late,” your mother snapped at you.

“Leave her be. This is an important day for her,” your grandmother said quietly, her voice even scarier than your mothers. 

Your mother sneered a bit, but nodded, looking away from you and her mother.

“YN, do you understand what you’re supposed to do when you summon the demon? Offer your first born son, and get a rich husband. Make us proud,” your grandmother explained, for the millionth time, to you. 

W-Wait… Offer what? You had been told to offer your future husband’s soul! That didn’t sit right with you either, but better a strangers than your childs! You felt sick to your stomach, gritting your teeth. You absolutely hated this. Not that you were going to wish for that anyway. You didn’t want a rich husband, just someone who would love you. You didn’t care about anything else, besides being free of this damn house. 

“Yes, Gra- Matriarch LN,” your voice monotone but proper as you spoke to your grandmother.

“Good,” she replied, turning and unlocking the door. She opened it and gestured inside, “You must go in alone.” 

After taking a deep breath, you slowly take your steps, marching into the room. As soon as the tail of your dress was it, the door slammed shut and you could hear the distinct click of the lock. Swallowing hard, you continue down the short hallway into a circular room with a black circle painted in the center of the room, with a bunch of triangles inside of it overlapping in a pattern you recognized from your study books. 

Gathering into the center, you raised your hands up outstretched in front of you, speaking an old, surely dead, language. As you began to speak, the paint began to glow a soft yellow color before slowly fading into the most brilliant hue of orange you had ever seen. 

Fear struck your heart for a moment, realizing the spell book had mentioned it should have turned a bright red color, similar to fresh blood. But, you continued the spell, equally afraid of not completing it at all. After all, orange was almost red, right? 

Once you were nearly done with the spell, it began to crackle, the sound turning into the sound of crows cawing all around you, slowly dissolving into silence as a rather large crow appeared before you. It had worked! 

A crow demon, huh? You hadn’t expected that… You hadn’t learned much about them, as only one other matriarch had ever summoned one before. She hadn’t written much down about it, either. 

“H-Hello,” your voice sounded stiff, cracking at the end. “I-I have summoned you for.. For my wish.”

The large crow tilted its head at you, looking at you with large brown eyes. It cawed loudly at you, causing you to jump a bit and take a step back. A large puff of black smoke was blown right in your face all of a sudden, causing you to close your eyes and shield your eyes. 

“Ah- Sorry about that,” a soft, boyish voice said.

Slowly opening your eyes, you look towards where the crow had been, only to see a young man with brilliantly orange hair and red eyes with slit pupils. He was dressed in a casual suit, black.. sneakers? with black trousers, a white button up with the top two buttons undone, and a black blazer. The only way you could tell he was a demon was the fact he had large sharp horns that looked like talons sat between his fluffy orange hair.

“I forget I can’t talk to humans as a crow,” he chuckled out, a large smile plastered on his face. “So, you want a wish, huh?” he continued.

You swallowed and nodded, standing tall and doing your best to speak in a sturdy voice.

“I want… a..” you started, but stopped, looking down at the ground, clenching your fists at your side. Feeling a hand on your shoulder, your head snaps up, coming nearly nose to nose with the young demon in front of you. 

“You’re sad.” It wasn’t a question.

“Yes,” you whispered quietly.

“Because you were told to ask for something you don’t want.” Another statement.

“How?” is all you can ask.

“Demons talk,” he replied in a soft chuckle.

“Can I… ask for freedom?”

His brown eyes watched you closely, his pupils slitting thinner before widening into circular pipuls. “What are you going to promise me in return? Freedom is a large wish.” he wondered, tilting his head.

“I… My soul, when I die- naturally.”

“How about all of you?”

Your eyes snapped up at his reply, confusion swirling in them. 

His face looked so serious, big red eyes looking into yours as he slowly leaned in, your lips nearly touching.

“W-” you started to lean in as well, but he spoke before you had the chance to speak, or kiss him.

“I accept!” he suddenly spoke, not caring you had started to speak, the large smile on his face as he took one step back from you. When he held out his hand, your own went into it instinctively. He lifted your hand, holding it tightly before using one of his fangs to bite into your palm, causing a small pool of blood to gather in the middle of your palm. You winced out of instinct, but it had been nearly painless, his fang had been very sharp. Looking up at him as he opened his mouth, his tongue sticking out as he began lapping at the blood. 

“Alright, it’s done. Thank you,” he murmured, licking the wound which caused it to heal with a gentle sizzle of your flesh. “See you, YN-chan.”

Your hand was dropped, and the last thing you saw was that large grin. 

You had informed your grandmother and mother the demon had granted your wish. They had both actually smiled at you and praised you for doing so well. It made you sick to your stomach. Was this your freedom? From their glares and slightly softer words? 

A few days passed, you went about your studies, taking the occasional walk around downtown with the only one cousin they allowed you around. Things had definitely gotten a bit better, but you were under constant watch still, and their glares returned often again by the second day when no man had shown up to just claim you. 

All you could truly think about though, was the young demon boy who had shown himself to you. Who had licked your hand, drank your blood and made you feel… safe. In such a short period, he had made you feel like you had hope. And you missed that.

Today was the fourth day, and you were outside tending to the large garden out on the west side of the manor’s land. Humming to yourself as you kneel down, gathering some of the herbs that were ready to be dried. You noticed a few shadows, but paid it no mind until you heard a small voice.

“M-Miss LN…?” It was one of the young cousins, making you turn to see not only her, but a young man. “Matriarch LN asked that he be brought to you… He was at the front door asking for you.” she whispered her explanation, stepping back quickly when she finished speaking. 

“Who is this?” you wonder, your voice soft as you look up at the man who was blocking your view of the sun, as your vision adjusted the rays shining around him like a halo. 

“I’m Shouyou Hinata, and I Co-Own Jackels Inc.” The orange haired young man said, holding out his hand to you

You took it, letting him help you up. As you stood, you made sure to take all of him in. He had big brown eyes, like the crows, and the same orange hair as the demon boy. Although he wasn’t as tall as you had remembered, or was this just someone who happened to look like your demon?

“Yes, and what do you need with me?” you ask, not liking his tone. Who cared what he owned? Or co-owned. 

“I’ve come to take your hand in marriage, Miss YN,” he replied, the large smile showing his sharp teeth. His eyes flashed red, the pupils slitting before returning to a circle, and the color back to brown. “I’m going to take you away,” he whispered sweetly.

You let out a soft gasp, holding your breath for a moment to make sure you’re seeing clearly. Unable to help yourself, you fling your arms around him. “I accept.” you say into his shoulder.

“Good, YN-chan,” he gently rubbed your back. 

The two of you went to introduce him to your grandmother and mother, who seemed to instantly approve of him. He had on an expensive suit, and a golden watch, plus the fact he was a CEO made him worthy of their praise.

Before the two of you left, your mother told you to visit soon with grandchildren, pretending to be a doting parent. 

Hinata looked behind his shoulder with a smirk, “Well, she did promise me a son,” he said before pulling you along with him, the door slamming on their shell-struck looking faces.

[BIC]Noburu is a very mischievous kid, and loves to pull harmless pranks and acts of vandalism, but despite her cocky and obnoxious outside, she is a bit of an social outcast. Only keeping to a very meager group of friends, and tends to avoid new people.

[BIC]Whenever she's with friends she tends to shrink back down to her average height which is more around 174cm (5ft 8). Still pretty tall compared to a lot of the other girls in MUA, but she's less nervous around girls as she is around boys. The more nervous she is the taller she will make herself basically.

[BIC]She hardly ever takes breaks from using her quirk, especially in a crowded setting like MUA where her anxiety is at its peak, but sometimes she will shrink back down without noticing especially when she's worn herself out. and it’s a pretty big cafe so there’s a lot of space for ppl to come in and chill, whether that be large study groups or just individuals trying to cram for upcoming tests

that homely feel?? it’s bc of all the youngsters that basically run the cafe

it’s officially owned by mr and mrs bang, but their son, chan, manages this cafe a lot since they’ve got a few other places in town to run

chan loves recruiting teens to work bc, despite their hyperactivity (esp the lot that are currently there), they’re a lot less work to deal with than grumpy adults complaining abt wages

so!!

just a few months ago, jeongin started looking around for places to work at

he spoke to a lot of the nearby businesses like the florist, library and pizzeria but as soon as he entered glow and saw a blond guy downing shots of black coffee as he made different drinks, he Knew he wanted to work here

he headed straight to the counter (ok ofc he waited in line first but who cares abt that)

“welcome to glow, what can i get ya?”

“hi, i was wondering if you were hiring?”

“so,” the guy - nametag reading Felix - began, leaning forwards on the counter, “you wanna join the glow gang, huh? have you got what it takes??”

maybe he should’ve thought more clearly abt this-

“felix are u creeping out kids again?? i swear this is the last time i leave you on counter duty” the black-coffee-drinking blond huffed, wiping his hands on his apron as he left the coffee machines. he nudged felix out of the way, pushing him to the machines before he turned to jeongin. “i’m sorry abt him, i don’t know why i still keep him around”

“i heard that!”

 “anyway,” the blond - nametag with Chan printed on it - grinned, “what can i get for you?”

“a job here would be great”

“you really wanna work here,,,, with that?” he pointed over to felix who looked back with a frown

“yeah, it seems pretty fun!”

“you got a cv on you?”

jeongin is a Prepared Boi. before his job hunting run he printed off multiple copies of his cv so he handed it over to chan who briefly looked over it

“when can you start working?”

“when do you need me to?”

chan let out a chuckle at that, pocketing jeongin’s cv, “swing by tomorrow at 4 and we’ll work that out, yeah?”

jeongin went home a Happy Boy and the next day at exactly 4:37 he had landed himself a sweet job at cafe glow

ever since that day a few months ago, jeongin had been learning the ins and outs of the cafe

he’s learnt all about where felix hides his ‘secret’ stash of sweets, where to kick if the machines ever go down and jisung’s ability to not stop talking

jisung’s the guy in charge of training jeongin bc chan doesn’t trust felix with another human’s life and minho, an older uni student that works here part time, is way too busy flirting with customers to get more tips those uni fees won’t pay themselves u go bby

and chan himself already has a lot to deal with since he mainly works in the kitchens

so jisung has taken jeongin under his wing and taught him how to make all drinks (despite there being a manual for this) and how to deal with the customers

and even tho jisung is only 5 months older than jeongin, he n e v e r misses an opportunity to baby the hecc out of him

“what are the different cup sizes we have?”

“uh,, small,, medium and large??”

jisung’s overdramatic as hell but he means well

and it’s always funny when jeongin teams up with felix (still a pretty rare occassion) to prank jisung

one day jeongin had a test after school so he couldn’t come by

and ofc he let chan know this in advance but he and felix decided not to tell jisung

jisung was waiting around for jeongin to come and he literally almost started crying when felix told him an hour later that jeongin wasn’t gonna come

“,,m,y bab y ? jeonginnie??? wh at do u me an,, he won’t com,e??? felix you a s s don’t l i e to m,e,, :((((”

they even got minho to record the whole thing not for free ofc, and minho’s services are n o t cheap, but it was totally worth it

which btw never shuts up bc: during the day (and work hours) felix, jisung and jeongin will be spamming it, during the evening minho will complain abt all the uni work he’s got to do, after dinner time the youngsters are back on it sending memes until like 2am, and then by 4am chan finally gets on and complains abt the boys killing his storage with their dumb memes & he gives any updates abt the next day’s schedule if need be

it’s a great system, hella wild and random, but jeongin loves it nonetheless

it’s just an ordinary day, a bit quieter than usual but jeongin’s not complaining bc it gives him time to finish off some of his hw while he’s at the till

the other boys stayed quiet as well, chan filling up the front display with the baked goods he freshly made

jeongin quietly got to finishing off ur drink and grabbed a cheesecake slice to carry over to you

“h-hey,” he started, placing the plate and drink beside your textbook, “sorry it took so long,,,”

“that’s alright,” you smiled and all his worries literally washed away, “was everything okay back there?”

“yeah,” he rubbed the back of his neck, smiling shyly, “minho’s just easily excited and nosy, a terrible combination really”

u laughed at that and he grinned, his nerves easing away

“u guys seem really close,” when he saw u quickly look over to the counters he turned as well, just in time to see all four of them rush to try and act natural (altho jisung just dropped to the ground so he’s really a lost cause)

“they’re really crazy, but they do mean well,” he grinned, “except felix, avoid him at all costs”

“i’ll keep that in mind,” you chuckled when jeongin pointed out who felix was and felix just glared back at him, as tho he knew jeongin was talking shit abt him

“well,” he started, realising he should go bc a big group of customers had just entered, “i’ll leave u to it, i hope u enjoy ur food. let me know if u need anything else!”

he headed back to the counter, a HUGE grin on his face, he’s so glad his back is to u bc he’d be so embarassed if u saw

it’s bad enough minho saw and is non-stop teasing him abt it now

throughout his shift minho was just taunting him, cooing “innie’s in love~”

as he was dealing with other customers and running around the cafe, he’d make quick eye contact with u and each time he did, u let out the softest smiles, he’s pretty sure he’s never smiled this much

abt an hour later when the rush had died down, jeongin looked over to see that!!! u were still there!!!!!

he fixed up a quick mango smoothie, smth he always found super refreshing, and headed over to your table

“h-hey?” he tapped your shoulder when he noticed u had your headphones in

“oh, hey! i, uh, i didn’t order this?”

“yeah, it’s,, it’s on the house, thought you might need a pick-me-up, you’ve been working rly hard”

“ahh thank you!!!” u grinned at him so cutely, “would u like to sit down?”

he nodded too enthusiastically but he hopes u didn’t pick up on that ((u did)) as he sat down opposite you

for the next 30 mins? hour?? neither of u know

u guys just talked

he’s thanking god that there was no rush in customers bc he enjoyed spending time just talking to u

the conversation seemed to flow so?? naturally???

he found out ur name and that u go to a nearby school sadly not the same one as him

and u were taking the scenic route home instead of ur normal walking path or using the bus which is why he’d never seen u before

he’s so glad that fate brought u here today tho!!!! eternally grateful that u made that wise choice!!!

when ur phone buzzed with a message from ur family he finally realised that it was getting late

he watched almost in tears as u packed ur stuff up, thanking him for the drinks and snacks that he definitely didn’t steal from felix’s hidden stash

he went back to the counter, stars in his eyes as he leaned against the counter, opposite minho who was chilling by the till

“so, how’d it go? did u get their number??”

u didn’t come back the next day which broke jeongin’s heart and he was honestly so close to losing all hope bc he’s incredibly dramatic like that

but u come back the day after!!!

jeongin’s wiping down a table when u enter and u spot him instantly and wave

he waves back but the cloth he’s holding slips from his hand onto the ground

and he rushes to pick it up but hits his head on the table when he tries standing up again

and he’s in so much pain but he just nervously laughs it away esp when he sees ur half worried, half trying-not-to-laugh-aloud face

when he sees u walking to him -- not the counter -- he’s counting to 100 in 3 seconds to try and calm himself down to not look like even more of a fool

“is the table okay?”

“yeah, i’m alri- hey, rude!” he pouts, faking a sniffle and rubbing his head

“i’m kidding, jeongin” (he had to bite his lip to not squEAL when u said his name) “are you okay? that looked painful :((”

“i’ll live,” he fake sobbed, rubbing away imaginary tears with the cloth in his hand before he realised what he’d just done and dropped it on the table in disgust (he highkey dieddd when u laughed at him again) “ew, i’m sorry you had to see all this”

“it’s fine,” you grinned, scrunching ur nose when u saw the wet smears on his face, “but u got a lil smth there” u pointed to ur own cheek

jeongin wanted to CRY

he knows he’s a cute boi (he uses this to his advantage whenever he can)

felix walked right to him, pulling him along to the coffee machines as he told him ur order

but this time u initiated the conversation

“felix isn’t all that bad, y’know?” you said, holding onto your hot drink as it warmed ur hands up

“for now,” jeongin started, “trust me, if u ever have the misfortune of seeing him act cute, you’ll regret ever saying that.”

your nose scrunched as you imagined that -- jeongin gasped when he saw and then prayed you didn’t see that -- before you let out the cutest laugh he’s ever heard, “yeah, i can’t imagine that looking nice”

you two talked for a bit more until jeongin had to get back to the counter and take orders

he popped up at your table when he could, offering felix’s sweets and a refill

“do you treat all your customers like this? free drinks isn’t good for business, y’know?”

he went bright red at your teasing bc “nope, you’re special!” -- his eyes went w i d e when he said that and, if it was possible, his cheeks went redder -- but god, was it worth it bc your eyes sparkled and your blooming blush was so pretty he was starstruck

he cleared his throat, let out the most nervous chuckle ever, put the lemonade on your table before diving behind the counter

he could practically hear minho’s smirk from all the way over here

it took a little while longer for him to psych himself up to go over to you again after that disaster

but seeing you pack up your bag made him forget everything and run up to you

“hey, you’re done already?” he asked, pouting as you put your last book away

“yeah, i’ve gotta help make dinner soon,” you replied, fixing your bag over your shoulder, “thanks for the drink, it was great!”

“y-yeah, no problem!” you loved his drink!! score!!!! “come again soon, yeah?”

“definitely,” you winked -- you winked, god his heart was weak -- before waving and taking your leave

felix slid up next to him, throwing his arm around jeongin’s shoulders

Okay so I made this post last night about how the FNAF series is taking on a new story now. Talked about how the dead children was story 1 and that was closed off and concluded in pizzeria sim yadda yadda.

But these stories still take place in the same universe so I still want to look at the connecting dots.

Obviously, this starts with Fazbear Ent.

Now when Henry and William first open the family diner and some of the old locations, I doubt either of them truly expected to be started a corporation. I say corporatation because in current times there is cannonicaly multiple locations someone could build up (Pizzeria Sim), a horror spinoff (Fazbear fright), and two games canon to exist in the FNAF universe (VR and AR). A pretty large operation I doubt they were expecting when they first opened a location to entertain families.

So how did the Fazbear Ent. we know come to be? Henry was the one in Pizzeria Sim, but if I recall correctly he didn’t ever mentioning stating he was in charge of a whole lot. Not actually too odd despite being a co-founder, after the initial murders and just a couple years of working in the business Henry probably was more than ready to retire. William went off and made Afton Robotics (sister location) so I wouldn’t be surprise if Henry was Done™️ as well. Also, with literally murders surrounding the company the only way to win back a public’s trust would be to say “we’re not in charge of it anymore.”

But the thing is, I don’t recall having a single hint as too *who* took over afterwards. I don’t know if Fazbear was given to a senior employee, or if it was sold off, or some combination of the two. Point is tho, it’s in new hands and they have taken the Corp. into some very new territory.

Regardless of who has it and what they’re doing with it, we saw there first attempts at business in FNAF 3. They were aware of the haunted past and first tried to capitalize on it with a horror attraction. Weird idea, but it would have some basis in some nostalgia and appealing to a growing interest into the paranormal the public has been having.

It fell through though. Quite spectacularly tbh. Any company with a decent amount of money would’ve probably invested in a cleanup crew and a safety inspection sooner on. That should’ve prevented the whole vent and fire situation. So that makes me think that whoever was in charged wasnt entirely sure what they were doing and didn’t have a ton of money upfront.

Then we don’t hear from Fazbears until pizzeria sim. Which is a couple games ahead and a considerable gap in our knowledge considering how big it appears to be by the time we reach pizzeria sim.

So what the hell happened inbetween all that???? How do you go from a failed horror attraction to multiple franchises and the money to create illustrated tutorials to your employees??? So idk if the new person got smart or changed hands with someone who knew more but they busted their ass ngl.

I’m guessing they opened more locations with the rockstar animatronics. Familiar faces but updated enough to look new. This paved way for the mediocre melodies to have a place, probably Fazbear’s way of testing the water with new characters. Don’t think they did that well but hey, at least they tried.

Then in VR it’s stated the company paid for FNAF 1-4 to be made. I’m assuming it was done around the time they were opening new locations when they realized there were people who grew up with the haunted locations. They held skepticism towards the place and likely to the new owner(s) and something needed to be done.

Boy oh boy, the intern who decided to commission a “maniac” to make the games and thus dismiss the claims must of gotten one helluva promotion. It also generated significant income which led the company to make the VR! Not only as further income, but to hopefully get a new generation of fans to be interested in the company for a totally different reason.

“Ooo look, this animatronics are haunted! Hahah isn’t that something? Here, go play with them and see how ~scary~ it would be! Isn’t it a hoot?” And judging by the amount of toys and DLC made, it must’ve been a hit! People took to it and thought it was cool, new, and fun. Hey look at this game! It pokes fun at some old company thats haunted! Isn’t that weird and yet likable in a toootally unironic way??

Well hey, these new kids like the creepy “story” that was “made up.” Wouldn’t it be cool to use all this new tech we have and some old suits we found to deliver the pieces of rusted metal to them?

Yea idk how that found base in the company meeting either, but it worked somehow. And apparently the company is big enough and driven purely by money to be able to not give a proper damn about the consequences.

So not only was Fazbear Ent. able to poke fun at and dismiss the original story as just a story, but now they essential have the chance to do whatever they want with the characters now. They got a boatload of money.

I guess this is where the glamrocks come in. They got people to ignore the murders. Guess they figured to try and push their way into the mainstream as something hip and cool for the teens to be into. What better way than a mall/party scene for teens to hang out at? Lmao. Points for originality I guess.

TL: DR: Fazbear Ent. is now owned by people solely concerned how to milk a lot of cash outta the franchise that’s dismissed its haunted past. Whew capitalism?

If you’ve followed along thus far then you should have a cloak, jerkin, pants and boots. A fully wearable Graham perfect for romping around the countryside. But it feels incomplete without the accessories, so let’s give those a try.

Part 4: Pouches n Bracers

(Again, these are all just suggestions and a How I Did It from a very novice cosplayer. Disregard all points, or take the ones you like. improvise adapt overcome)

Perhaps the best part about adventure games is the stuff. The bottomless inventory, a random assortment of strange things that all Do A Thing. Graham carries everything from money to badgers to literal humans in his pockets (presumably his mother is a seamstress trained by the gods). 

This...won’t be you. Sorry.

Now, to be fair, I saw a Graham cosplay on tumblr (I’m so sorry, I don’t remember who--does anyone know?) who sewed pockets into their cloak, which is delightful and a very sweet idea! 

However, I prefer the swoosh and snap of my cloak, and heavy things like cell phones in your cloak will alter the weight. Something to keep in mind as you decide how to manage your outfit.

(forgive the blur--I haven’t been able to get a still of what it looks like when swooshing. Perhaps now I’ve got real boots I’ll do another gifset of it)

Thus, all my phone, money, keys, and backup freckles (e.g., liquid eyeliner) must live in Graham’s belt pouches instead of cloak pockets. Lord knows what Graham actually keeps in his pouches, game-wise. Squirrel snacks, maybe, to avoid repeating the fiasco from Tourney Day?

This time I followed a pattern. I know, weird, right?

I wanted functionality, but I wanted them to be slim and simple, too. I found a guy on YouTube, and he comes with a .pdf template pattern in his video description! It’s super detailed, easy to follow, and better than me rambling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPhQlaI_UX4

Three years later, they’re starting to look a touch tired. I used a plain dark brown fabric (was it broadcloth?). Half a yard is plenty. If it’s semi-close in color your your belt, ideal. I made two sizes, two large for phone and makeup for touchups, and one small for keys and money. The large ones are 3″ wide and 5.5″ tall, and the small one is 2.5″ by 4.5″, but size them to whatever important things must be on your body at all time.

I added snap clasps to keep them shut (never know when you’ll be pounced by goblins, or trip over a crack in the sidewalk), and I found some plain silver buttons to sew over where the snaps sit--added bonus, hides my sloppy stitchwork. I took some of the leftover suede rope from the jerkin for the front--my ugliest secret is that it’s really horrible looking super glue dribbled everywhere. Hasn’t moved in 3 years, tho. /victory fist bump

I turned the corners of the front flaps so I wouldn’t have square tops. I didn’t trim off the excess fabric since I thought keeping extra weight in the corners would help keep the flaps down. You could always sew in another layer of something sturdier if you didn’t want the flaps to curl over time--it’s probably worth it. It does make a difference. 

So, in doing this half-tutorial, I’ve just realized that Graham’s actual model has three pouches of various sizes on his left side only which means I’ve been wearing and drawing him wrong since day one. So. That’s cool. themoreyouknow.gif

Bracers!

Graham’s an archer. So, he’s got bracers on his forearms to protect himself. (presumably his rippling muscles are protection enough since he stops wearing them between his 30s and 70s.)

We have the same problem here as with the jerkin: the bracers seem practically sewn onto his arm. And that’s maybe doable, but I’m mortal, not digital, and I want this to be comfortable and also easy to remove. Now, unfortunately, my method loses the black bands he has on his bracer underbellies--they don’t seem to fit. If you have a nice solution, let me know.

Get yourself a ruler, paper, a scrap of elastic band, a sheet or two of stiff felt (probably like this stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Darice-Stiff-inches-5-Pack-FLT-0331/dp/B00KNAKJH6), and all the leftovers from your jerkin.

Measure around your wrist--mine’s 6″, so we’ll use that. Draw a 6″ line on a piece of paper, find the center of the line, mark it. Measure how long down your arm you want the bracer to go. I like 8 and a quarter inches myself (make it as long as you can without the bracer edge rubbing your inner elbow because that gets real old real fast). From the center mark of your wrist line, make a straight line down (a grid is helpful here to keep it straight). At the point where your bracer stops, measure around your arm: I got 9″. Find the halfway mark of your base arm line, add that to the paper. Connect the corners. It should look approximately something like this:

Cut out and test your design to make sure it’s comfortable (you want to forget you’re wearing these. keep them away from your elbow. f’reals). Cut the shape out of your stiff felt, and cut out your brown fabric leftover from your jerkin, with a margin all around so you can fold it over and sew (I did an inch I think, because I’m a coward). For the hand guard, I did half my wrist (3″), then measured my hand to see how high it had to be to just scrape the knuckle. For my hand, that’s about 3″, give or take. Curve it, test it, cut it out of felt and brown alike, and cut out some extra brown to cover the inside of the hand guard too, as you don’t want to see any white against your hand.

Fold the loose edges over the felt and sew it down along the marked places:

Make little snips in the hem of the hand guard hem as you go to achieve that tight curve. 

I was nervous about combining the two pieces as I needed easy wrist flexibility. The two lines that aren’t hemmed I left “raw” and sewed the brown edges together as was, so that there’s no stiff felt against the wrist at all. 

Another secret: my bracer grommets aren’t the same as my jerkin grommets--they’re much smaller, like 7mm, because I’d planned on making my jerkin with this smaller size earlier to replicate Graham’s tighter lacing but it didn’t work out--the larger ones from your jerkin work fine. 

It’s the same process as the jerkin, too. Every inch from the wrist to the elbow gets a grommet, plus its corresponding partner. A-likea so:

The next part might be optional. I cut another piece of brown about the same size as the bracer body again, and sewed the edges along the inside, just past the grommets, so that when you wear the bracer, you don’t see the shirt beneath your laces. It also gives you a place to hide the loose ends of your suede rope once it’s tied into place. Probably optional. 

Graham’s bracers have definition near the elbow, and I was annoyed that I couldn’t find a way to fit in the large black bands without messing up the simplicity of my pull on/pull off system, so to reference it I found thin black trim and sewed it along the bottom hem, just below the last grommet. 

Okay, lace it with the suede rope and try it for fit. You may notice the hand guard is a bit unwilling to stay attached. Get the super glue, and--

no wait please don’t do that

let’s just make an elastic ring instead

My elastic was white: I colored it with a brown marker so it wasn’t as jarring if anyone caught sight of it. Sew it into your existing hemline, wherever it feels natural to wear it as a ring on your middle finger. A strip of fabric or trim might work as well, but the elastic makes it easy to pull on. 

I desperately need to update my gray wristbands with real rope. This is trim, and I do not like it. But it was free, at the bottom of my cosplay bin, and I’m so tired of spending money on this costume.........anyway, loop the rope of choice three times around your wrist, sew it into a closed loop to avoid dealing with knots and bows, and tug the whole thing on and off over your hand. pls do not make it too tight.

And that’s looking like a proper cosplay. Just a few more accessories and also the hat. I assume everyone just wants the adventuring hat, but if there’s any interest in the crown, I could toss that in too, maaaayyyybbeeee?

I didn't want an entire year to lapse before I even wrote in this "before I die" journal so here is the decorated front and back covers, some planning, and a black and white photo of what a @beforeidieproject wall looks like. The journal helps you accomplish your dream in 100 days. The before I die wall is a public art project where people write their bucket list goals on a chalkboard. Funds from this journal, created by @candychangland, and the Before I Die book support that project as well as @ritualfields. Do check them all out, they're incredible to read.

Before I Die I want to become a prolific, engaged & brave writer. I know I have potential and feel confident enough to execute:

Prolific ~ read deeply and widely, submit simultaneously, update my & The AALR's social media frequently, blog at least once a week, work on more than one project, journal consistently, make marginalia

Engaged ~ write book reviews on faves on Goodreads, Amazon & elsewhere, connect with authors and writers and let them know you enjoy their work, attend & volunteer at readings, share opportunities, table for The AALR & LAKAS zine, critique others' work, be active on bookstagram & litsy

Brave ~ go for residencies & fellowships, write pitches, apply for publishing jobs, do open mics again, read & perform at events, attempt new genres & mediums, do writing workshops again

I've been making headway at the start of 2020, tho it's been nerve-wracking to wait for responses. But it's all positive so far so yay. I'm working on promoting myself better. I actually got published in two zines last year but I didn't want to share cuz it was tech old work. But fuck it, I'm still proud of those words so no more bashfulness.

The front cover is a vision board of sorts. I seek perfect wax seals, high and wide-ranging productivity, letters, reading, traveling, different perspectives on the same subject, adventure, facing fears, adoring my face & being, trusting myself, stationery, ephemera, fully immersed, discovery, and magic. I left that paper clip and oval paper sticker blank because I don't know if I should number it as "Vol. I" or put my name. I really want this to work out but we'll see.
