I have a few silly Language headcanons for XIV but I think my favorite is that the initial group of Sharlayan settlers spoke a pidgin that took from various Eorzean languages and the ancient roegadyn language that sea wolf names are made of, and then when mutual intelligibility had been established all the Linguistics Nerds set about to create a conlang to be the official language of Sharlayan. Except two camps emerged- one who wanted a really fancy, complicated language and one that wanted a simple, elegant language, and by the time that a vote was called on the matter there was already a generation nativizing the pidgin and the vote ended up with "just make both languages and we'll see which gets more use" except somehow both stuck around. So now Sharlayan is three languages in a trenchcoat.
